Ecological aspects of South American Trypanosomiasis: XIII - Domestic enzootic potencial in Panstrongylus megistus area submitted to epidemiological surveillance

In certain areas of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, where transmission of tripanosomiasis by Triatoma infestans has been interrupted for at least six years, ah investigation of domestic enzootic situations has been carried out. A low incidence (0.3%) of infected dogs was found and their infection associated to the existence of Panstrongylus megistus and Didelphis marsupials populations with synanthropic tendency. The use of this survey focusing on domestic animals, mainly dogs, is suggested as a valuable measure in epidemiological surveillance for the early detection of the reproduction of the tripanosomiasis domiciliary cycle.
