Validation of a forecasting system for Cercospora leaf spot of beet

ABSTRACT

Aiming to validate a forecasting system with different levels of estimated severity values, compared to conventional spraying, to control Cercospora leaf spot of beet, experiments were conducted in Rio do Sul, Santa Catarina State, Brazil, during the crop seasons of 2018, 2019 and 2020. The spraying regimes were established according to the estimated severity values (ES) in the system of Marcuzzo et al., attributing accumulated values of 0.15, 0.25 and 0.35 ES, and in the conventional system with sprayings at every 5 and 7 days. There was no significant difference between treatments for productivity in any cycle. The area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), the final severity and the disease progress rate did not differ among treatments, but in the forecasting system with ES=0.35 the number of sprayings was 28, 57 and 67% lower than that in the weekly application system in the three years of evaluation. The use of the forecasting system has proved to be a viable tool for the management of tlid-translationCercosporatlid-translation leaf spot in Santa Catarina State, Brazil, and is available for free for the production chain at the Agroconnect platform of EPAGRI-CIRAM: http://www.ciram.sc.gov.br/agroconnect/.
