Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a systemic condition potentially related to an increased risk of progression of various infections such as chronic osteomyelitis by accelerating the inflammatory process with bone tissue necrosis and suppuration. Therefore, if there is no proper management of these infections, they can be life-threatening as they spread to deeper spaces in the head and neck. We describe the case of a 52-year-old male patient with a history of diabetes mellitus and grade III osteoarthritis who was diagnosed with chronic suppurative osteomyelitis of the mandible. He underwent a multidisciplinary surgical intervention in which he underwent a hemimandibulectomy with immediate mandibular reconstruction. The present case highlights the importance of early and radical treatment of patients with chronic suppurative osteomyelitis of the mandible and systemic comorbidities. In addition, this case presents a review of diabetes mellitus and the risk of developing odontogenic infections and complications when invading deeper spaces in the head and neck. Therefore, in this population, careful planning is required for early surgical and pharmacological treatment.

Resumen La diabetes mellitus es una condición sistémica potencialmente relacionada con un mayor riesgo de progresión de diversas infecciones como la osteomielitis crónica al acelerar el proceso inflamatorio con necrosis del tejido óseo y supuración. Por lo tanto, si no hay un manejo adecuado de estas infecciones pueden ser potencialmente mortales al llegar a propagarse a espacios más profundos de la cabeza y cuello. Describimos el caso de un paciente varón de 52 años con antecedentes de diabetes mellitus y osteoartrosis grado III a quien se le diagnosticó de osteomielitis crónica supurativa mandibular. Se le realizó una intervención quirúrgica multidisciplinaria en la cual se le realizó una hemimandibulectomía con reconstrucción mandibular inmediata. El presente caso destaca la importancia del tratamiento temprano y radical de los pacientes con osteomielitis mandibular crónica supurativa y comorbilidades sistémicas. Además, en este caso se presenta una revisión sobre la diabetes mellitus y el riesgo de desarrollar infecciones odontogénicas y complicaciones al invadir espacios más profundos de la cabeza y cuello. Por lo tanto, en esta población se requiere de una planificación cuidadosa para realizar un tratamiento quirúrgico y farmacológico temprano.

RESUMEN Fundamento: el estudio de las enfermedades debe integrar perspectivas e incluir variables relacionadas con los profesionales sanitarios. La aparición de nuevas enfermedades como la COVID-19 ha generado un grupo de investigaciones dirigidas a los profesionales y estudiantes inmersos en su prevención y control. Objetivo: caracterizar las actitudes de los estudiantes de Enfermería vinculados al pesquisaje activo de casos sintomáticos de COVID-19. Métodos: en la universidad médica camagüeyana se realizó un estudio descriptivo, transversal, en el período de marzo a mayo de 2021, con la combinación de metodologías cualitativas. Se aplicaron métodos teóricos para la fundamentación de la investigación y empíricos como la observación externa directa, entrevista semiestructurada y composición, a una muestra de 30 estudiantes de licenciatura en Enfermería. Resultados: las actitudes se caracterizaron por tener una dirección que no indicó rechazo abierto, pero se percibió la dificultad de abordar el tema de la posibilidad del propio contagio en el 49,30 %. Hubo un 62,10 % de inconsistencia interna en las actitudes, al constatarse una relación antagónica entre sus componentes. Conclusiones: la vinculación de los estudiantes de Enfermería a escenarios clínicos y comunitarios permitió la identificación de características en sus componentes, consistencia o funciones que implican exposición a situaciones de riesgo o limitan el desempeño; es imprescindible modificarlas en aras de garantizar las acciones de sostenibilidad y la formación profesional.

ABSTRACT Background: the study of diseases must integrate perspectives and include variables related to health professionals. The emergence of new diseases such as COVID-19 has generated a group of research aimed at professionals and students immersed in its prevention and control. Objective: to characterize the attitudes of nursing students linked to active screening in cases of COVID-19. Methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out at Camagüey Medical University from March to May 2021, with a combination of qualitative methodologies. Theoretical methods were applied to support the research and empirical methods, such as direct external observation, semi-structured interviews and composition, to a sample of 30 undergraduate Nursing students. Results: the attitudes were characterized by having a direction that did not indicate open rejection, but the difficulty of addressing the issue of the possibility of contagion itself was perceived in 49.30%. There was 62.10% of internal inconsistency in attitudes, as an antagonistic relationship was found among its components. Conclusions: the linking of Nursing students to clinical and community settings allowed the identification of characteristics in their components, consistency or functions that imply exposure to risk situations or limit performance; it is essential to modify them in order to guarantee sustainability actions and professional training.

Resumen Introducción: Las especies de Mesochorus se encuentran en todo el mundo y los miembros de este género son principalmente hiperparasitoides de las familias Ichneumonoidea y Tachinidae. Objetivos: Describir las especies de Mesochorus costarricenses obtenidas de orugas y en menor medida por trampas Malaise. Métodos: Las especies se diagnosticaron mediante el uso de código de barra molecular por COI del ADNmt, inspección morfológica y datos del huésped. Se proporciona un conjunto de imágenes y datos de los huéspedes (planta, oruga y parasitoide primario) para cada especie. Resultados: Se encontró un total de 158 nuevas especies de Mesochorus. Sharkey es la autoridad taxonómica para todas las especies. Conclusiones: Se demuestra una aplicación práctica del código de barras de ADN que se puede aplicar a grandes cantidades de especies de insectos neotropicales no descritas para grupos hiperdiversos.

Abstract Introduction: Species of Mesochorus are found worldwide and members of this genus are primarily hyperparasitoids of Ichneumonoidea and Tachinidae. Objectives: To describe species of Costa Rican Mesochorus reared from caterpillars and to a lesser extent Malaise-trapped. Methods: The species are diagnosed by COI mtDNA barcodes, morphological inspection, and host data. A suite of images and host data (plant, caterpillar, and primary parasitoid) are provided for each species. Results: A total of 158 new species of Mesochorus. Sharkey is the taxonomic authority for all. Conclusions: This demonstrates a practical application of DNA barcoding that can be applied to the masses of undescribed neotropical insect species in hyperdiverse groups.

Resumen El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar las propiedades fisicoquímicas, morfológicas, estructurales y térmicas del almidón recuperado de los residuos de Solanum tuberosum de la industria de frituras en México, utilizando técnicas instrumentales avanzadas. La papa residual se recogió de una empresa productora de papas fritas y el almidón se obtuvo mediante extracción acuosa. El almidón presentó un contenido de carbohidratos de 87.79 %, proteínas (1.18 %), lípidos (0.15 %), cenizas (0.26 %) y amilosa (24.35 %). La capacidad de absorción de agua fue de 1.0163 g g-1, solubilidad (30.17 - 46.65 %), hinchamiento (2.31 - 8.69 g g-1). Los análisis térmicos mostraron una gelatinización del almidón entre 61.7 - 90 °C con una pérdida máxima de peso a 288.1 °C. La microscopía electrónica de barrido-espectroscopía dispersiva de energía (SEM-EDS) mostró partículas de 14 - 69 µm con una composición de 54.3 % de carbono, 45.4 % de oxígeno y 0.15 % de potasio. La dispersión dinámica de luz (DLS) mostró partículas de tamaño nanométrico (120 nm). La resonancia magnética nuclear (NMR) y la difracción de rayos X (XRD) exhibieron la cristalinidad del almidón como tipo B (34.73 %) y la reflectancia total atenuada por espectroscopia infrarroja transformada de Fourier (FTIR - ATR) mostró los grupos funcionales distintivos de la glucosa.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical, morphological, structural, and thermal properties of starch recovered from Solanum tuberosum residual of chips industry in Mexico using advanced instrumental techniques. The residual potato was collected from a chips production company and the starch obtained by aqueous extraction. The starch presented a content of carbohydrates of 87.79 %, proteins (1.18 %), lipids (0.15 %), ashes (0.26 %), and amylose (24.35 %). The water absorption capacity was 1.0163 g g-1, solubility (30.17 - 46.65 %), swelling (2.31 - 8.69 g g-1). Thermal analyzes showed a starch gelatinization about 61.7 - 90 ºC with a maximum weight loss at 288.1 °C. The scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) showed particles of 14 - 69 µm with a composition of 54.3 % carbon, 45.4 % oxygen, and 0.15 % potassium. The dynamic light scattering (DLS) showed particles of nanometric size (120 nm). The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) exhibited the crystallinity of the starch as type B (34.73 %) and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) showed the functional groups distinctive of the glucose.

Resumen El objetivo del artículo es reflexionar críticamente sobre la construcción del perfil profesional de los docentes de artes y humanidades en la Educación Superior de Ecuador, con el fin de mejorar su empleabilidad en escuelas, colegios e institutos. Por este motivo, la investigación utiliza una metodología cualitativa, de carácter exploratorio y descriptivo, que promueve una revisión filosófica y antropológica para proponer una reconceptualización de los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje que se dan en la asignatura Educación Cultural y Artística (ECA) del currículo de Educación General Básica (EGB). Como resultado, se describen las tendencias pedagógicas de la época prehispánica, era colonial y desde la república del siglo XIX hasta la actualidad. También se muestran las estimaciones estadísticas publicadas por el Ministerio de Educación (2021) sobre la cantidad de instituciones educativas que forman estudiantes en asignaturas relacionadas con las artes tanto en Educación Básica y Bachillerato General Unificado, como en instituciones especializadas, que necesitan docentes-investigadores formados. Desde una visión educativa compleja, transdisciplinar, decolonial e intercultural, la investigación propone ocho principios filosóficos y antropológicos derivados de la cosmovisión indígena quechua del Sumak Kawsay, orientados a construir una filosofía educativa de formación docente que mejore sus competencias pedagógicas y artísticas. Para concluir, se debate sobre las políticas públicas y los planes de estudios de educación superior que orientan el perfil profesional de los estudiantes que ejercerán como docentes.

Abstract This article aims to critically reflect on the construction of the professional profile of arts and humanities teachers in Higher Education in Ecuador, in order to improve their employability in schools, colleges and institutes. For this reason, the research uses a qualitative, with an exploratory and descriptive nature, that promotes a philosophical and anthropological review to propose a reconceptualization of teaching-learning processes that occur in the subject ‘Cultural and Artistic Education’ (CAE) of the General Basic Education (GBE) curriculum. As a result, the pedagogical trends of the pre-Hispanic era, the colonial era and from the Republic of the 19th century to the present are described. The statistical estimates published by the Ministry of Education (2021) on the number of Ecuadorian educational institutions that train students in subjects related to the arts in both Basic Education and Unified General Baccalaureate, as well as in specialized institutions and that need teachers are shown. From a complex, transdisciplinary, decolonial and intercultural educational vision, the research proposes eight philosophical and anthropological principles derived from the Sumak Kawsay indigenous Quechua worldview, aimed at building an educational philosophy of teacher training that improves their pedagogical and artistic skills. To conclude, public policies and higher education curricula that guide the professional profile of students who will work as teachers are discussed.

ABSTRACT Objective. To calculate the economic impact of violence across Mexico in 2021 and project costs for 2021–2030. Methods. Incidence data was obtained from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, (SESNSP), National Population Council (CONAPO), National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), and the National Survey of Victimization and Perception of Public Safety (ENVIPE). Our model incorporates incidence estimates of the costs of events associated with violence (e.g., homicides, hospitalizations, rapes, extortions, robbery, etc). Results. The economic impact of crime and violence in Mexico for the year 2021 has been estimated at about $192 billion US dollars, which corresponds to 14.6% of the national GDP. By reducing violence 50% by 2030, we estimate savings of at least US$110 billion dollars. This represents a saving of US$1 376 372 for each company and more than US$66 771 for each Mexican. Conclusion. Violence and homicides have become one of the most pressing public health and economic concerns for their effect on health, development, and economic growth. Due to low cost and high impact, prevention is the most efficient way to respond to crime and violence while also being an essential component of sustainable strategies aimed at improving citizen security.

RESUMEN Objetivo. Calcular el impacto económico de la violencia en el 2021 en todo México y proyectar sus costos para el período 2021–2030. Métodos. Los datos de incidencia se obtuvieron del Secretariado Ejecutivo del Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública (SESNSP), el Consejo Nacional de Población (CONAPO), el Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI), y la Encuesta Nacional de Victimización y Percepción sobre Seguridad Pública (ENVIPE). Nuestro modelo incorpora estimaciones de la incidencia de los costos de los eventos asociados a la violencia (por ejemplo, homicidios, hospitalizaciones, violaciones, extorsiones, robos, etc.) Resultados. Se ha estimado que el impacto económico del delito y la violencia en México para el año 2021 es de alrededor de US$ 192 000 millones de dólares estadounidenses, lo que corresponde al 14,6% del PIB nacional. Estimamos que una reducción del 50% de la violencia para el 2030 supondría un ahorro de al menos US$110 000 millones. Esto representa un ahorro de US$1 376 372 para cada empresa y de más de US$66 771 para cada mexicano. Conclusión. La violencia y los homicidios se han convertido en una de las preocupaciones económicas y de salud pública más apremiantes por su efecto sobre la salud, el desarrollo y el crecimiento económico. Debido a su bajo costo y alto impacto, la prevención es la forma más eficiente de responder al delito y la violencia, al tiempo que es un componente esencial de las estrategias sostenibles dirigidas a mejorar la seguridad ciudadana.

Os dados de incidência da violência no país foram obtidos da Secretaria Executiva do Sistema Nacional de Segurança Pública (SESNSP), do Conselho Nacional de População (CONAPO), do Instituto Nacional de Estatística e Geografia (INEGI) e da Pesquisa Nacional de Vitimização e Percepção de Segurança Pública (ENVIPE). O modelo incorpora estimativas de incidência de custos de eventos associados à violência (como homicídios, internações hospitalares, estupros, extorsões e roubos). Resultados. O impacto econômico da criminalidade e da violência no México foi estimado em torno de US$192 bilhões em 2021, o que equivale a 14,6% do produto interno bruto (PIB) nacional. Estima-se que reduzir a violência em 50% até 2030 pode resultar em uma economia de US$ 110 bilhões ou mais, o que representa uma redução de gastos de US$1 376 372 para cada empresa e de mais de US$66 771 para cada cidadão do México. Conclusão. A violência e os homicídios são um dos problemas econômicos e de saúde pública mais prementes por suas consequências à saúde, ao desenvolvimento e ao crescimento econômico do país. Devido ao seu baixo custo e alto impacto, a prevenção é a forma mais eficiente de combater a criminalidade e a violência, além de ser um componente essencial de qualquer estratégia sustentável para aumentar a segurança da população.

Abstract Background Diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (PE) constitutes a challenge for practitioners. Current practice involves use of pre-test probability prediction rules. Several strategies to optimize this process have been explored. Objectives To explore whether application of the pulmonary embolism rule-out criteria (PERC rule) and age-adjusted D-dimer (DD) would have reduced the number of computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) examinations performed in patients with suspected PE. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study of adult patients taken for CTPA under suspicion of PE in 2018 and 2020. The PERC rule and age-adjusted DD were applied. The number of cases without indications for imaging studies was estimated and the operational characteristics for diagnosis of PE were calculated. Results 302 patients were included. PE was diagnosed in 29.8%. Only 27.2% of ‘not probable’ cases according to the Wells criteria had D-dimer assays. Age adjustment would have reduced tomography use by 11.1%, with an AUC of 0.5. The PERC rule would have reduced use by 7%, with an AUC of 0.72. Conclusions Application of age-adjusted D-dimer and the PERC rule to patients taken for CTPA because of suspected PE seems to reduce the number of indications for the procedure.

A prática atual envolve o uso de modelos de previsão de probabilidade pré-teste e, para otimizar esse processo, várias estratégias têm sido exploradas. Objetivos Investigar se a aplicação dos critérios de exclusão de EP (pulmonary embolism rule-out criteria, PERC) e do D-dímero (DD) ajustado para idade diminui o número de angiografias computadorizadas (ATCs) pulmonares realizadas em pacientes com suspeita de EP. Métodos Estudo transversal retrospectivo com pacientes adultos submetidos a ATC pulmonar com suspeita de EP em 2018 e 2020. Foram aplicados os critérios PERC e o DD ajustado para idade. Foi estimado o número de casos não indicados para exames de imagem, e foram calculadas as características operacionais para o diagnóstico de EP. Resultados Foram incluídos 302 pacientes, dos quais 29,8% apresentaram diagnóstico de EP. Apenas 27,2% dos casos não prováveis de acordo com os critérios de Wells apresentaram DD; o ajuste implicou em uma diminuição de ACTs de 11,1%, com área sob a curva de 0,5. Os critérios PERC diminuiriam em 7%, com área sob a curva de 0,72. Conclusões A aplicação do DD ajustado para idade e dos critérios PERC em pacientes submetidos a ATC pulmonar por suspeita de EP parece diminuir a indicação para tais exames.

Abstract Background Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) dermoscopy is key to lower the biopsy threshold of suspicious lesions. There is a scarcity of published data on the dermoscopy of very small BCC (≤3 mm) and its differences from larger BCCs. Objective To describe and compare dermoscopic features of BCCs measuring ≤3 mm, with those from 3 to 10 mm. Methods An analytical cross-sectional study, included biopsy-proven BCCs that had dermoscopic photographic images, between January 2017 and December 2022 in a Skin Cancer Center in Medellín, Colombia. Demographic, clinic-pathological and dermoscopic features were compared between very small BCCs (vsBCCs) and a reference group. Results A total of 326 BCCs in 196 patients were included, of whom 60% were male. The most common Fitzpatrick phototype was III. vsBCCs accounted for 25% of the lesions (81/326). Face and neck were the most frequent locations (53%), especially in very small tumors. The nodular type was more common in very small tumors than in larger lesions, the superficial type was less frequent, and aggressive types were equally prevalent in both groups. On dermoscopy, very small tumors were statistically more likely to present pigmented structures than reference lesions, especially blue-gray dots (67% vs. 54%), vessels were less frequent, particularly short-fine telangiectasias (SFT) (52% vs. 66%), as were other structures such as shiny white structures (SWS), ulceration, micro-erosions, and scales. Study limitations Latin-American sample, lacks information on dark phototypes Conclusions Pigmented structures, especially blue-gray dots, were most common in vsBCCs when compared to larger lesions; SFT, SWS and other findings were less prevalent.

Resumen A pesar de la baja frecuencia de coinfecciones bacterianas asociadas al COVID-19, la tasa de uso de antibióticos (ATB) empíricos varía entre 70 y 90%. El objetivo primario del estudio fue evaluar el impacto de la implementación de un programa de optimización de antimicrobianos en pacientes con COVID-19 (PROA-COVID). Se realizó un estudio prospectivo de serie de tiempo interrumpida. Se evaluó la prevalencia, adecuación y consumo de ATB en adultos internados con COVID previo a la implementación del PROA-COVID (P1, junio 2020) y en tres períodos posteriores (P2 en agosto 2020, P3 en octubre 2020 y P4 en junio 2021). Se incluyeron 301 pacientes. Las formas clínicas moderadas-graves fueron más frecuentes en los P2, 3 y 4 (p < 0.001). La implementación del programa mostró una disminución significativa del uso de ATB (61% vs. 41% vs. 31.1% vs. 8.1%, p < 0.001), de la indicación de tratamiento combinado con macrólidos (17.3% vs. 19.2% vs. 10.8% vs. 1.4%, p = 0.03) y aumento del uso adecuado (37.5% vs. 46.9% vs. 69.9% vs. 66.6%, p = 0.039). El consumo de ATB en DDT (días de tratamiento) totales/1000 días paciente fue: 347.9 vs. 272.8 vs. 134.3 vs. 43.6 (p < 0.001). No hubo diferencias significativas en el pase a unidades de cuidados críticos ni en la mortalidad. La implementación del PROA-COVID fue una estrategia efectiva para reducir el uso de antibióticos y optimizar sus indicaciones sin impacto en la morbimortalidad.

Abstract In spite of the low frequency of COVID-19 associated bacterial coinfections, the rate of empiric an tibiotic use varies between 70% and 90%. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of an antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) on COVID-19 patients. The study design was an interrupted time series, assessing prevalence of antibiotic use, adequacy of treatment and antimicrobial consumption in adult patients hospitalized with COVID before the COVID-ASP implementation in June 2020, and on three subsequent periods (P2 in August 2020, P3 in October 2020 and P4 in June 2021). One hundred and one patients were included. Moderate and severe disease was more frequent in P2, P3, and P4 periods (p < 0.001). After the implementation we observed a significant reduction on ATM use (61% vs. 41% vs. 31.1% vs. 8.1%, p < 0.001), and macrolid combination therapy (17.3% vs. 19.2% vs. 10.8% vs. 1.4%, p = 0.03), and an increase of adequate use (37.5% vs. 46.9% vs. 69.9% vs. 66.6%, p = 0.039). Antimicrobial consumption by period in days of therapy (DOT)/1000 patient-day was 347.9 vs. 272.8 vs. 134.29 vs. 43.6 (p<0.001). We did not find any difference in intensive care unit transfer or mortality. COVID-ASP implementation was an effective strategy to reduce antimicrobial consump tion and optimize antibiotic indications without affecting morbidity or mortality.

Abstract Introduction: To describe and analyze the existing perception about job satisfaction (SL) and quality of life (QoL) of Spanish resident doctors in the months which follow the end of the state of alarm due to COVID-19 and one year after that. Method: A Descriptive-correlational study, being the Spanish residents the target population who was asked, using an online form, in two periods (1st from 11/01 to 12/31, 2020 and 2nd between 11/01 and 12/31, 2021). For SL, the Font-Roja questionnaire was used and for QoL, the WHOQOL-BREF (both using a 5-point Likert scale). Results: 404 residents responded (1st cut) and 411 (2nd cut). The results for the global SL showed Rho = 0.09; p = 0.081, without differences between their means (-0.07; p = 0.090). The global QoL, measured through the questionnaire, evinced a low correlation between both cut-offs (Rho = 0.10; p = 0.041), with variations between their means (-0.14; p < 0.001). Conclusions: In relation to SL, no association was revealed between the two periods studied. Regarding QoL, more positive data were found in the 2nd period, both in self-perceived QoL and in the global result of the questionnaire.

Resumen Introducción: Describir y analizar la percepción existente acerca de la satisfacción laboral (SL) y la calidad de vida (CV) de los/las médicos/as residentes españoles/as en los meses posteriores a la terminación del estado de alarma por la COVID-19 y al año de la misma. Método: Estudio descriptivo-correlacional, siendo la población diana los/las residentes españoles/as a quienes se preguntó, mediante formulario online, en dos cortes (1º de 01/11 al 31/12 de 2020 y 2º entre 01/11 y 31/12 de 2021). Para la SL se utilizó el cuestionario Font-Roja y para la CV el WHOQOL-BREF (ambos mediante escala Likert de 5 valores). Resultados: Respondieron 404 residentes (1er corte) y 411 (2º corte). Los resultados para a SL global mostraron Rho = 0,09; p = 0,081, sin diferencias entre sus medias (-0,07; p = 0,090). La CV global, medida a través del cuestionario, indicó baja correlación entre ambos cortes (Rho = 0,10; p = 0,041), con diferencias entre sus medias (-0,14; p < 0,001). Conclusiones: En relación a la SL no se constató asociación entre los dos periodos estudiados. Respecto a la CV se evidenciaron mejores datos, en el 2º corte, tanto en la CV autopercibida como en el resultado global del cuestionario.

RESUMEN El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el potencial de intoxicación subcrónica de Crotalaria pallida en ovinos. Se utilizaron seis carneros, alimentados con heno y agua potable ad libitum, y 200 g/animal/día de ración balanceada comercial. Los ovinos fueron distribuidos en un grupo control (G1) con dos animales y un grupo experimental (G2) con cuatro animales. En la dieta de G2 se incluyó 8 g de materia seca (MS) de C. pallida por kilogramo de peso vivo durante 28 días. Todos los animales fueron evaluados clínicamente c/24 h. Se les pesó y se tomaron muestras de sangre para hemograma y perfil hepático y renal en los días 0, 14 y 28 posexposición a C. pallida. Los animales fueron sacrificados al final del estudio para la toma de muestras para análisis histopatológico. No se encontraron diferencias significativas entre grupos con respecto al examen clínico, hemograma y bioquímica sanguínea; sin embargo, en el estudio histopatológico se evidenció engrosamiento moderado de los septos alveolares en pulmón, cambio vacuolar severo en hígado y proteinuria moderada en riñón en los animales expuestos a C. pallida.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential for subchronic intoxication of Crotalaria pallida in sheep. Six rams were used, fed with hay and drinking water ad libitum, and 200 g/animal/day of commercial balanced ration. The sheep were distributed into a control group (G1) with two animals and an experimental group (G2) with four animals. In the G2 diet, 8 g of dry matter (DM) of C. pallida per kilogram of body weight were included for 28 days. All animals were clinically evaluated every 24 h. Animals were weighed and blood samples were taken for hemogram and liver and kidney profile on days 0, 14 and 28 post-exposure to C. pallida. All animals were slaughtered at the end of the study and samples were collected for histopathological analysis. No significant differences were found between groups with respect to clinical examination, hemogram data and blood chemistry; however, the histopathological study showed moderate thickening of the alveolar septa in the lung, severe vacuolar change in the liver, and moderate proteinuria in the kidney in the animals exposed to C. pallida.
