ABSTRACT Studies about the combining ability and genetic diversity can provide information on the genetic resources contained in the working collection of germplasm. The objective of this study was to estimate the combining ability of ten soybean parents and their hybrids in the F1 generation using diallel analysis and genetic diversity analysis to evaluate the dissimilarity between parents and crosses. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized design with five replications, during the 2019/2020 crop season, in the municipality of Rio Verde, State of Goiás, Brazil. Agronomic and physiological variables were evaluated. Data were subjected to analysis of variance. Diallel analysis was performed using the Griffing method 2. Analysis of genetic diversity was performed with the Mahalanobis generalized distance and the hierarchical average linkage clustering. Additive gene effects were predominant in the control of all variables analyzed in the F1 generation. The parents SYN 1163 RR and CG 7370 RR showed good complementarity for the variable grain yield. The thirty-five genotypes were separated into six groups, and the variable weight of one hundred seeds had the greatest contribution to genetic diversity.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

ABSTRACT The conventional soybean production has been re-establishing itself every year, due to the fact that the international market has demanded products with high agronomic performance and nutritional quality, free of genetically modified organisms. This study aimed to evaluate the adaptability of conventional soybean genotypes in the southwestern Goiás state (Rio Verde, Montividiu and Santa Helena de Goiás), Brazil, during the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 crop seasons. A randomized blocks design was used, being tested eight genotypes (the cultivars BRS284, BRS283, BRS232, BRS317, NT11-1277, INT3459 and M6101 and the line NT1478SP). The grain and oil yields, as well as the oil and protein contents, were evaluated. Multi-environment analyses were performed using a heterogeneous residual variance model, and the GGE biplot analysis was used to describe the interrelationships between genotypes and environments. The most adapted and stable genotypes were BRS 317 for grain yield and BRS 283 for oil yield. They also corresponded more closely to the ideotype for the specific region, thus proving to be promising. NT1478SP showed the highest protein content. In the 2018/2019 crop season, Montividiu was more discriminating for the conventional soybean production, regarding grain and oil yields.

ABSTRACT The expansion of sorghum as a succession crop, after soybean, has demanded the development of new inbred lines by the breeding programs. The first step in the selection process consists of evaluating the performance per se of the inbred lines or of their hybrid combination. The purpose of this study was to determine the combining ability of sorghum inbred lines under different environment conditions of the crop production areas. The trials were carried out in the second season of 2017, under no-tillage system, in four environments, Rio Verde, Sete Lagoas, Teresina and Sinop. Thirty hybrids, resulting from the crosses of six fertility restoration lines (R) with five male-sterile lines (A) were evaluated. A randomized complete block design with three replicates was used in all experiments. The characteristics evaluated were flowering, plant height and grain yield. The environment significantly influenced the estimates of general and specific combining ability, which suggests that both effects, additive and dominant, are important in the control of these characters. The restoring lines GI.1 and G1.2 contributed to increasing the grain yield of their hybrids by over 650 kg.ha-1. Among the male-sterile lines, the best for grain yield were GII. 1 and GII.4 with contribution above 450 kg.ha-1 in the hybrids in which they participate. The hybrid combinations GI.5xGII.3 and GI.1xGII.2 stood out with potential to obtain high grain yield, associating positive aspects of the other characteristics.

ABSTRACT The spatial arrangement of plants in the cultivation area is a factor that directly influences grain yield, since the best arrangement can result in the greater use of water, light and nutrients. The aim of the study was to evaluate the agronomic performance of sorghum sown in double row spacing in the Brazilian Cerrado. For this purpose, field experiments were conducted in the 2018 and 2019 seasons in a complete block design with a factorial scheme of 2 x 5. There were four replications, using two row spacing: traditional (0.50 m) and double rows (0.25 m/0.75 m) and five plant populations: 120, 180 (recommended), 240, 300 and 360 thousand, plants ha-1. Morphological characteristics, yield components and grain yield were evaluated using joint data analysis for the two years of study. In 2018, due to lower rainfall during the crop season, the use of a double row arrangement presented grain yield lower than traditional spacing. On the other hand, in 2019, the year with the best water distribution, the yield was superior to that of 2018. The increase in plant population per hectare increased the yield of sorghum grains, with gains of up to 24% in relation to the recommended population of 180 thousand plants ha-1, demonstrated that the densification in this crop can be a promising technique as long as its cost/benefit is considered.

ABSTRACT Glyphosate is the main herbicide used in the Roundup Ready® (RR®) soybean crop. However, the different salt and herbicide formulations available on the market can lead to crop intoxication. In this scenario, biostimulants appear as a promising alternative to mitigate the possible phytotoxic effects of glyphosate. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of different MC Extra® biostimulant doses associated with glyphosate formulations on the agronomic characteristics of a herbicide-tolerant soybean cultivar. Two experiments were conducted in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons with three doses of MC Extra® (0.35, 0.70, and 1.00 kg ha-1) associated with six formulations of glyphosate: Glyphotal®, Roundup Original®, Roundup Ready®, Roundup WG®, Roundup Transorb®, and Zapp QI®, plus additional treatment without the use of the herbicide. In both experiments, we used 900 g e.a. ha-1 of glyphosate. The results showed that the highest dose of MC Extra®, in combination with the Roundup Original®, Roundup Ready®, and Roundup Transorb® formulations and 0,70 kg ha-1 of MC Extra® with Glyphotal® provided the highest grain yields. When used in conjunction with the herbicide, there is a need to increase the dose of MC Extra® to obtain higher soybean yields.

ABSTRACT The grain sorghum intercropped with Brachiaria provides the production of grains and dry mass in the off-season; however, there is a lack of information related to the implantation of these species. The objective of this study was to identify the best association of sorghum and Brachiaria in the production of grain and dry matter in the Brazilian Cerrado region. The experiment was conducted in Rio Verde, State of Goiás, in the experimental design of randomized blocks, in a 2×3×4+5 factorial scheme, with four replications. Two sorghum hybrids (BRS 330 and DKB 551) associated to three Brachiaria species (Brachiaria brizantha cultivar Marandu, Brachiaria decumbens and Brachiaria ruziziensis) were evaluated in four systems of Brachiaria implantation (row, interrow, row + interrow of sorghum and spread). Additional treatments referred to the two sorghum monocrops and the three Brachiaria species. The sorghum and Brachiaria consortium resulted in a reduction in grain yield, but the Brachiaria implantation systems in the row, interrow and spread were the most promising. The sorghum hybrid DKB 551 was the most sensitive to the competition with Brachiaria, although there were no grain yield differences in the intercropping. The Brachiaria intercropped in the interrow and in the row + interrow, mainly with B. ruziziensis, were the most promising for the production of dry mass and total crude protein. The cultivation of Brachiaria intercropped with sorghum provided a greater contribution of dry mass in the off-season, an important fact for the no-tillage system in the agricultural production systems of the Brazilian Cerrado.

ABSTRACT. The productive capacity of soybeans is associated with the adaptation of the culture to the cultivation environment. Factors such as a high number of pods, the weight of a thousand grains, and grain number are essential factors in determining cultivars of high productive potential. The launching of new varieties associated with new technologies makes it necessary to know the performance of these varieties in different growing environments. This study aimed to analyze the agronomic performance of transgenic soybean cultivars under Cerrado conditions. The experimental design used completely randomized blocks; six of the twelve cultivars used RR1 technology and the remaining six used RR2BT. The cultivars were grown in five distinct locations in the southwest region of Goiás. The results demonstrated no increments in the grain yield of the RR1 or RR2BT technologies and the precocity of the cultivars also did not favor an increase in grain yield. The localities of Jataí and Rio Verde did not influence the cultivar cycle.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The intercropping system has been used to produce grain and forage, but few trials have been conducted with sorghum in the Central-West region of Brazil. Therefore, the objective this study was to identify, in the off-season cultivation, the intercropping of sorghum and brachiaria that provides higher grain, dry matter (straw) and crude protein (forage), yieds with two cuttings in off-season brachiaria . The field trial was installed in RioVerde-GO, March 5, 2009. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design in a factorial scheme 2x3+1+3, corresponding to two sowing depths of brachiaria (2 and 10 cm) and three species (Brachiaria decumbens, Brachiaria brizantha cv.Maranduand and B. ruziziensis) sowed in the interrow of DKB 599 grain sorghum. In addition, four treatments corresponding to one sorghum monoculture and three to each brachiaria species were also installed. The intercrop of sorghum with brachiaria in the interrow had potential to produce grain (except the intercropping with the B.decumbens, sown at the depth of 10 cm, and with the B.ruziziensis, at 2 cm), dry matter and crude protein, showing the viability of the no-tillage cultivation in the Central-West region of Brazil.

The objective of this study was to measure ammonia volatilization from surface application of pig slurry, poultry litter, urea and no fertilization. An experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, in plots repeated over time, with four treatments and four replications. The fertilizers tested were: mineral fertilizer (70 kg ha-1 N, 100 kg ha-1 P2O5 and 30 kg ha-1 of K2O, as urea, triple superphosphate and potassium chloride, respectively), pig slurry (200 m³ ha-1 applied in November 2008 and 200 m³ ha-1 applied in April 2009) and poultry litter (10 t ha-1 applied in November 2008 and 10 t ha-1 applied in April 2009). Five evaluations were performed with 24-hour intervals. Foams were used with glycerin and sulfuric acid, internally fixed in PET bottles for collecting ammonia. After collected, the samples were sent to the laboratory to determine volatilized ammonia levels by the semi-micro Kjedahl distillation method. Fertilization with chicken litter had lower ammonia volatilization in relation to urea and pig slurry. Most of the ammonia volatilization from pig slurry occurred within 48 hours after application, totaling losses of 630 g kg-1 of a total of 8.25 kg ha-1 of volatilized ammonia. The biggest loss by ammonia volatilization was from fertilization with urea, totaling approximately 80 g kg-1 of N applied.

Early selection of potato clones has been evaluated for many decades with the aim of discriminating and selecting promising genotypes in the very beginning of the breeding program. In an attempt to surpass the low selection efficiency for characters with low heritability, efforts have been made in the evaluation of genetic progress using first generation families. The purposes of this study were to measure the interaction of families with the environments and to evaluate the efficiency of early generation selection of the families. Twenty-two families and two control cultivars were evaluated in three locations in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. Combined analyses of variance were performed and estimates of correlations and genetic progress were obtained. Significant interaction of families x environments was observed only for the tuber specific weight. The expected genetic gain based on the selection of the environment average was more effective for the tuber yield. The expected genetic gain based on the selection of the environmental average was lower than the direct selection performed on each environment, but it allows the identification of broadly adapted families.

Eight popcorn populations (CMS-42, CMS-43, Zelia, RS-20, Catedral, Zaeli, UEM-J1 and UEM-M2) were evaluated aiming at obtaintion of estimates of inbreeding depression and average genetic components and to compare these estimates to each genetic group. Each trial was carried out with plots in randomized complete block design with three replications in split-plot experiment, in which the plots were the inbreeding levels (S1 and S0) and in the sub-plots the populations in two years (1998/99 and 1999/00). The characteristics grain yield and popping expansion were evaluated. The GARDNER methodology (1965) was used for obtaining the estimates of average genetic components. It was observed lower values of inbreeding depression and predominance of additive effects for popping expansion in relation to yield. The values of inbreeding depression for grain yield were higher in the composite than in bath, improved and not improved varieties. Using these populations the probability of success in the obtaining vigorous and high popping expansion inbred lines is low.

Nine cassava cultivars IAC 12, IAC 13, IAC 14, Fécula Branca, Espeto, Branca-de-Santa Catarina, Fibra, Verdinha and Mico were evaluated for roots and branches productivity, dry matter contents and bacterium resistance. The trials were carried out during the years of 1994/95, 1995/96 and 1996/97, in Araruna, Northwest Region of Paraná State, Brazil. The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. In the joint analyses, the cultivar vs. year interaction effect was significant (P < 0,05) for all the characteristics evaluated. In spite of that, it was possible to conclude that IAC 14 and Fécula Branca had the highest branch yield and root yield, respectively. The cultivars IAC 14, Fécula Branca, IAC 13 and IAC 12 presented the highest root dry matter contents. Mico, IAC 14 and Fécula Branca showed the highest bacterium resistance.
