Abstract Objective: To assess the predictive value of selected growth phenotypes for neonatal morbidity and mortality in preterm infants < 30 weeks and to compare them with INTERGROWTH-21st (IG21). Methods: Retrospective analysis of data from the Brazilian Neonatal Research Network (BNRN) database for very low birth weight (VLBW) at 20 public tertiary-care university hospitals. Outcome: the composite neonatal morbidity and mortality (CNMM) consisted of in-hospital death, oxygen use at 36 weeks, intraventricular hemorrhage grade 3 or 4, and Bell stage 2 or 3 necrotizing enterocolitis. Selected growth phenotypes: small-for-gestational-age (SGA) defined as being < 3rd (SGA3) or 10th (SGA10) percentiles of BW, and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) as being > 97th percentile of BW. Stunting as being < 3rd percentile of the length and wasting as being < 3rd percentile of BMI. Single and multiple log-binomial regression models were fitted to estimate the relative risks of CNMM, comparing them to IG21. Results: 4,072 infants were included. The adjusted relative risks of CNMM associated with selected growth phenotypes were (BNRN/IG21): 1.45 (0.92–2.31)/1.60 (1.27–2.02) for SGA; 0.90 (0.55–1.47)/1.05 (0.55–1.99) for LGA; 1.65 (1.08–2.51)/1.58 (1.28–1.96) for stunting; and 1.48 (1.02–2.17) for wasting. Agreement between the two references was variable. The growth phenotypes had good specificity (>95%) and positive predictive value (70-90%), with poor sensitivity and low negative predictive value. Conclusion: The BNRN phenotypes at birth differed markedly from the IG21 standard and showed poor accuracy in predicting adverse neonatal outcomes.

ABSTRACT Purpose To describe the main quantitative methods used for morphometric analysis of the vocal tract in singers, their applications and the main segments studied. Research strategy This is an integrative review guided by the guiding question “What are the main quantitative methods used for morphometric analysis of the vocal tract, their applications and the main segments studied in singers?”. The electronic databases PubMed, Scopus and VHL were used through the search key (Vocal tract OR Oropharynx) AND (Morphology OR Geometry) AND (Evaluation OR Diagnosis) AND (voice), without restriction of years of publication, including articles in three languages: Portuguese, English and Spanish. Selection criteria The selection took place independently through reading by pairs and subsequent application of exclusion and inclusion criteria. Results Of the 380 studies, 30 duplicates were excluded. After reading the abstracts, applying the selection criteria, 18 studies were selected for full reading, of which 12 were included in this review. Magnetic resonance imaging was the main instrument used and the analyzed segments ranged from the length and volume of the vocal tract to isolated segments and their morphological particularities. Conclusion Vocal tract morphological quantification methods are important for the instrumental evaluation of the vocal tract and its segments, a technological update leading to better understanding of singers’ voice and therapeutical intervention.

RESUMO Objetivo descrever os principais métodos quantitativos utilizados para análise morfométrica do trato vocal em cantores, suas aplicações e os principais segmentos estudados. Estratégia de pesquisa trata-se de uma revisão integrativa guiada pela pergunta condutora: “Quais os principais métodos quantitativos utilizados para análise morfométrica do trato vocal, suas aplicações e os principais segmentos estudados em cantores?”. Foram utilizadas as bases eletrônicas PubMed, Scopus e BVS, por meio da chave de busca Vocal tract OR Oropharynx AND Morphology OR Geometry AND Evaluation OR Diagnosis AND voice, sem restrições de ano de publicação, sendo incluídos artigos em três idiomas: português, inglês e espanhol. Critérios de seleção: a seleção se deu de forma independente, por meio da leitura por pares e posterior aplicação dos critérios de exclusão e inclusão. Resultados dos 380 estudos, foram excluídos 30 duplicados. A partir da leitura dos resumos, aplicando-se os critérios de seleção, foram selecionados 18 estudos para leitura na íntegra, dos quais, 12 foram incluídos nesta revisão. A ressonância magnética foi o principal instrumento utilizado e os segmentos analisados incluíram desde o comprimento e volume do trato vocal, como segmentos isolados e suas particularidades morfológicas. Conclusão os métodos de quantificação morfológica do trato vocal integram instrumentos importantes para a avaliação instrumental do trato vocal e de seus segmentos, colaborando na atualização tecnológica em voz para melhor compreensão e intervenções fonoaudiológicas na voz cantada

Abstract The aim of this study is to report an original case series of synchronous jawbone diseases. Data of patients seen over 13 years were extracted from the files of three Oral Radiology and Pathology diagnostic centers in Brazil. The clinical, radiographic, and laboratory characteristics were tabulated and analyzed by the authors; the patients were described according to lesion type. Seventy-two synchronous jawbone diseases were included in this study. Florid osseous dysplasia, Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, and cherubism were the most frequent disorders reported in this case series. In addition, the posterior mandible area was the main site of manifestation. Florid osseous dysplasia and Gorlin-Goltz syndrome represented two-thirds of our samples. With the utilization of adequate demographic, clinical, and radiologic information, it is possible to diagnose most of the synchronous lesions of jawbones. Sometimes, however, we need complementary exams, such as histopathologic and biochemical analysis or dosing of calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase.

ABSTRACT Objective The establishment of reference values for a subset of leukocytes is common in clinical practice, and ethnic variations are strongly associated with disease development. In Brazil, indigenous people are vulnerable to infections, and few studies have described the health and disease conditions of this population. This study aimed to provide reference values for immunological cell subsets in indigenous Brazilians living in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Methods Flow cytometry and 4-color combinations of monoclonal antibodies were used to characterize cells. A total of 115 healthy adults, mostly females (72%), were included in the study. The results are presented as mean and median (2.5%-97.5% percentiles) for T and B lymphocytes, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, Natural Killer cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells, providing an average immunological profile for the population in question. Results The relative medians of CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ T cells were significantly higher in women than in men in a healthy indigenous population. Conclusion To our knowledge, cell reference data from indigenous Brazilians are unknown in the literature. The immune cell results presented in this pioneering study will contribute to the clinical and laboratory evaluation of the Brazilian indigenous population, especially given the important differences when compared with other Brazilian ethnic groups.

Abstract Introduction Prenatal exposure to the Zika virus can impair neurodevelopment and cause auditory damage. Objective To analyze the frequency-following response (FFR) and the auditory behavior (with the LittlEars® questionnaire) of children with and without prenatal exposure to Zika virus infection. Methods A total of 30 children participated in the present study, divided into 3 groups: 10 children with microcephaly and prenatal exposure to the Zika virus; 10 normocephalic children with prenatal exposure to the Zika virus; and 10 children with no evidence of prenatal exposure to the virus. The FFR test was performed with the /da/ syllable. The LittlEars® questionnaire was used with parents/guardians. Results For the FFR measurements, there was no difference between the groups. The children with exposure to the Zika virus presented a final score in the questionnaire below what is expected from children with normal hearing. A significant difference was observed for the final, semantic, and expressive scores between the group with microcephaly and the other groups. A strong negative correlation was seen between the LittlEars® questionnaire final score and the FFR measurements for the group with microcephaly when compared with the other groups. Conclusion Children exposed to the Zika virus, with and without microcephaly, presented FFR patterns similar to what was seen in children with no evidence of virus exposure. However, they showed signs of immature auditory behavior, suggesting auditory development delay.

ABSTRACT This cross-sectional observational study that describes the epidemiological data of the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Mato Grosso do Sul State, aimed to demonstrate the differences between indigenous and non-indigenous populations, characterize confirmed cases of COVID-19 according to risk factors related to ethnicity, comorbidities and their evolution and to verify the challenges in facing the disease in Brazil. SIVEP-Gripe and E-SUS-VE, a nationwide surveillance database in Brazil, from March 2020 to March 2021 in Mato Grosso do Sul state, were used to compare survivors and non-survivors from indigenous and non-indigenous populations and the epidemiological incidence curves of these populations. A total of 176,478, including 5,299 indigenous people, were confirmed. Among the indigenous population, 52.5% (confidence interval [CI] 51.2-53.9) were women, 38% (CI 36.7-39.4) were 20-39 years old, 56.7% were diagnosed by rapid antibody tests, 12.3% (CI 95%:11.5-13.2) had at least one comorbidity, and 5.3% (CI 95%:4.7–5.9) were hospitalized. In the non-indigenous patients, 56.8% were confirmed using RT-PCR, 4.4% (CI 95%:4.3-4.5) had at least one comorbidity, and 8.0% (CI 95%:7.9-8.2) were hospitalized. The majority of non-survivors were ≥60 years old (65.1% indigenous vs. 74.1% non-indigenous). The mortality in indigenous people was more than three times higher (11% vs. 2.9%). Indigenous people had a lower proportion of RT-PCR diagnoses; deaths were more frequent in younger patients and were less likely to be admitted to hospital. Mass vaccination may have controlled the incidence and mortality associated with COVID-19 in this population during the period of increased viral circulation.

RESUMO Objetivo: Analisar historicamente o ensino de enfermagem psiquiátrica da Universidade Federal de Alagoas de 1976-1981. Métodos: Estudo qualitativo; abordagem histórico-social com o auxílio da História Oral Temática com base em fontes documentais e depoimento de enfermeiros, discentes, docentes e profissionais do hospital psiquiátrico em que práticas ocorriam. Para a compreensão da história, utilizaram-se pesquisas sobre história mundial, do Brasil, de Alagoas e Diretrizes Curriculares da Enfermagem, além dos conceitos de Erving Goffman como referencial teórico. Resultados: Revelaram-se as condições estruturais da universidade em 1976, a contribuição estadunidense no corpo docente da disciplina, a preparação psicológica das estudantes nas aulas teórico-práticas, o cenário precário da assistência psiquiátrica em Alagoas e o cuidado minimizador de estigmas mediante a empatia e escuta sensível. Conclusão: Com o surgimento da disciplina, estudantes e professores ampliaram olhares sobre o adoecimento mental e evidenciaram a necessidade de manter uma formação acadêmica pautada em princípios reformadores da assistência.

ABSTRACT Objective: To historically analyze psychiatric nursing teaching at the Universidade Federal de Alagoas from 1976 to 1981. Methods: Qualitative study; social-historical approach employing Thematic Oral History based on the documentary sources and testimonials from nurses, students, professors, and professionals at the psychiatric hospital where these practices occurred. The study researched World, Brazil, and Alagoas history and the Curricular Guidelines for Nursing for the history comprehension and used Erving Goffman’s concepts as a theoretical reference. Results: They revealed the structural conditions of the university in 1976, the American contribution to the teaching staff, the students’ psychological preparation in theoretical and practical classes, the precarious scenario of psychiatric care in Alagoas, and the care that minimizes stigmas through empathy and sensitive listening. Conclusion: With the emergence of that discipline, students and professors expanded their views on mental illness and emphasized their need for academic training based on reforming care principles.

Resultados: Revelaron condiciones estructurales de la universidad en 1976, contribución estadunidense al cuerpo docente de la disciplina, preparación psicológica de estudiantes en clases teórico-prácticas, escenario precario de la asistencia psiquiátrica en Alagoas y el cuidado reductor de estigmas mediante la empatía y escucha sensible. Conclusión: Con el surgimiento de la disciplina, estudiantes y profesores ampliaron miradas acerca de enfermedad mental y evidenciaron la necesidad de mantener una formación académica pautada en principios reformadores de la asistencia.

ABSTRACT The chemical composition of ceramics has a deep impact on our understanding of their physical and chemical properties. This work performed a chemical and mineralogical characterization of clay mixtures with incorporation of a residue from the steel industry. The clay mixtures could be used in the brick production. Two types of clays were mixed with the proportion of 1:1 and the residue were incorporated with the proportions of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. Each material had their chemical composition analysed before the burning step. Five specimens were used to analyse their mineralogical composition after the burning step at the temperature of 800 °C. The tests performed to make the characterization were: X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetry (TG) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The XFR analysis showed that the main components of the clays are the silicon oxide (SiO2) and the aluminium oxide (Al2O3), and for the residue, the main components are the iron oxides, represented by iron content (T-Fe). The XRD analysis showed the quartz as the most abundant mineral in clays, but that hematite, the most abundant mineral in the residue, appeared more as the amount of residue increased in the sample. Thermal Analysis confirmed the expected peaks in clays and identified an exothermic reaction in the sample with residue. The increase in the percentage of residue caused changes in the chemical composition of the samples, however, these variations were not remarkable, which suggests the red clay industry could add the residue in its production.

RESUMO A composição química das cerâmicas tem grande importância no entendimento das propriedades químicas e físicas desse material. Neste trabalho foram realizadas caracterizações química e mineralógica de misturas de argilas, incorporando um resíduo proveniente de uma indústria siderúrgica, para aplicar na produção de cerâmica. Dois tipos de argila foram misturados na proporção de 1:1 e o resíduo foi adicionado nas proporções de 5%, 10%, 15% e 20%. Avaliou-se a composição química de cada material puro e a composição mineralógica foi analisada após a etapa de queima, na qual 5 corpos de prova foram submetidos a uma temperatura de 800 °C. A caracterização foi realizada com os ensaios de Fluorescência de Raios X (FRX), Difração de Raios X (DRX), Termogravimetria (TG) e Calorimetria Exploratória Diferencial (DSC). A FRX mostrou os óxidos de silício (SiO2) e alumínio (Al2O3) como principais componentes das argilas e os óxidos de ferro (T-Fe, teor de ferro) como principais componentes do resíduo. A DRX mostrou o quartzo como o mineral mais abundante nas argilas, mas que à medida que a concentração de resíduo aumentava na amostra, aumentava também o teor de hematita, principal mineral encontrado no resíduo. A TG e a DSC confirmaram picos esperados nas argilas e identificou uma reação exotérmica nas amostras com resíduo. O aumento do percentual de resíduo provocou alterações na composição química das amostras, no entanto, não foram alterações significativas, o que indica a possibilidade do uso desse resíduo na produção de cerâmica vermelha.

Resumo Objetivo Analisar a aplicabilidade e eficiência de um treinamento em laparoscopia com múltiplas abordagens, em melhorar as habilidades laparoscópicas básicas de residentes de ginecologia e obstetrícia (GO). Métodos Estudo transversal, observacional e descritivo, desenvolvido no Centro de Treinamento em Experimentação e Cirurgia (CETEC) do Instituto de Pesquisa do Hospital Albert Einstein com residentes de GO. Foram aplicadas avaliações teóricas e práticas a 24 residentes de GO com o objetivo de avaliar suas habilidades laparoscópicas antes e após sua participação em um curso de 8 semanas. O curso envolveu palestras teóricas e exercícios práticos de cirurgia laparoscópica através de modelos de borracha, caixas pretas, simuladores virtuais e modelos animais (porcos). Resultados Houve uma melhora geral na habilidade dos residentes, comaumento do número de respostas corretas na avaliação teórica e diminuição do tempo na execução dos testes práticos (montagem do porta-agulha e realização de nó laparoscópico). O curso foi avaliado pelos alunos como altamente relevante por melhorar suas habilidades cirúrgicas e motivá-los a continuar praticando. Conclusão O treinamento laparoscópico utilizando múltiplas abordagens resultou em melhora significativa das habilidades cirúrgicas atrelado a alto nível de satisfação dos participantes. Novos estudos ainda são necessários para mensurar a retenção destas habilidades adquiridas a longo prazo.

Abstract Objective To analyze the applicability and efficiency of amulti-approach laparoscopic training in improving basic laparoscopic skills of obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN) residents. Methods Cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study, developed at the Experimentation and Surgery Training Center (CETEC, in the Portuguese acronym) of the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein with OBGYN residents. Theoretical and practical tests were applied to 24 OBGYN residents to assess their laparoscopic skills before and after their participation in an 8-week course. The course involved theoretical lectures and practical laparoscopic surgery exercises developed using rubber models, black boxes, virtual simulators and animal models (pigs). Results There was an overall improvement in the ability of the residents, with an increase in the number of correct answers in the theoretical evaluation and decrease in the time needed to perform practical tests (needle holder assembly and laparoscopic node). The course was evaluated by the students as highly relevant for both improving their surgical skills and motivating them to continue practicing. Conclusion Laparoscopic training using multiple approaches resulted in significant improvement of surgical skills with a high satisfaction level of the participants. Further studies are still needed to measure the long-term retention of these acquired skills.

RESUMO A altura dominante de eucalipto pode apresentar forte autocorrelação espacial, sendo imprescindível investigar os métodos de interpolação na sua espacialização. Nesse contexto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar métodos determinísticos e geoestatísticos na estimativa da altura dominante em povoamento de eucalipto. Em 14 talhões do gênero (377 hectares) foram avaliadas 233 unidades amostrais, obtendo-se as variáveis altura dominante e diâmetro a 1,30 m do solo. Os interpoladores espaciais avaliados foram os geoestatísticos (krigagem e cokrigagem ordinária) e determinísticos (inverso do quadrado da distância e polinôminio global do 10º grau). Ainda, aplicou-se a krigagem indicatriz para espacializar a probabilidade de locais com valores de altura dominante acima da média. Os resultados mostraram que a altura dominante de eucalipto apresenta-se com forte dependência espacial, sendo possível a sua espacialização tanto pela krigagem quanto cokrigagem ordinárias. Na presença da componente espacial, métodos determinísticos não são recomendados, em especial, os modelos polinomiais globais. A krigagem indicatriz viabiliza o mapeamento da probabilidade de uma determinada classe de produtividade ocorrer, subsidiando o planejamento da rotação florestal.

ABSTRACT The dominant height of eucalyptus can present strong spatial autocorrelation, being indispensable to investigate the interpolation methods in its spatialization. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate deterministic and geostatistical methods in estimating the dominant height in eucalyptus stands. In 14 management units of the genus (377 hectares), 233 sample units were allocated, obtaining the variables dominant height and diameter at 1.30 m of the soil. The spatial interpolators evaluated were geostatistics (kriging and ordinary cokriging) and deterministic (inverse of the distance square and global polynomial of the 10th degree). Furthermore, indicator kriging was applied to spatialize the probability of locations with above-average dominant height values. The results showed that the dominant eucalyptus height presents with a strong spatial dependence, being possible its spatialization by both ordinary kriging and cokriging. In the presence of the spatial component, deterministic methods are not recommended, especially the global polynomial models. Indicator kriging enables the mapping of the probability of a given class of productivity to occur, subsidizing forest rotation planning.

Resumen: En Brasil, aproximadamente treinta y cinco mil niños y adolescentes están en instituciones de acogida porque se encuentran en un estado de vulnerabilidad, lo que revela un problema de dimensión social. Dada esta realidad, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar en qué medida una institución de acogimiento ofrece entorno y equipo de profesionales que cumplan con los estándares establecidos por la legislación pertinente. Diez empleados de una casa de acogimiento participaron y respondieron a una entrevista estructurada. A partir de la observación, se completó un cuestionario sobre la estructura física y la rutina operativa de la institución. Los resultados revelaron que la institución de acogimiento no tenía una estructura física totalmente adecuada a las necesidades de los niños y que los educadores no estaban capacitados para ofrecer el servicio que proponían. Se concluye que existe una necesidad de mayor inspección de estas instituciones por parte de los órganos competentes y el desarrollo de estudios que promuevan la garantía de los derechos fundamentales y una mejor calidad de vida para los niños que son acogidos.

Abstract: In Brazil, about thirty-five thousand children and adolescents are in host institutions because they are in a state of vulnerability, which reveals the dimension of the social problem. Given this reality, the present study aimed to investigate the extent to which a host institution offers an environment and a team of professionals that meet the standards established by the relevant legislation. Ten employees from a host house participated and responded to a structured interview. Through observation, a questionnaire was filled out about the institution's physical structure and functioning routine. The results revealed that the host institution did not have physical structure totally adequate to the needs of the children and the educators were not trained to offer the service they were proposing. It is concluded that there is a need for greater inspection of these institutions by competent bodies and studies that promote the guarantee of fundamental rights and a better quality of life for the children who are taken in.

Resumo: No Brasil, cerca de trinta e cinco mil crianças e adolescentes estão em instituições de acolhimento por se encontrarem em estado de vulnerabilidade, o que revela a dimensão do problema social. Diante desta realidade, o presente estudo teve como objetivo geral investigar em que medida uma instituição de acolhimento oferece ambiente e equipe de profissionais que atendam aos padrões estabelecidos pela legislação pertinente. Participaram dez funcionários de uma casa de acolhimento que responderam a uma entrevista estruturada. Através de observação foi preenchido um questionário acerca da estrutura física e da rotina de funcionamento da instituição. Os resultados revelaram que a instituição de acolhimento não apresentava estrutura física totalmente adequada às necessidades das crianças e os educadores não estavam capacitados para a oferta do serviço a que se propunham. Conclui-se que há necessidade de maior fiscalização destas instituições por órgãos competentes e de estudos que promovam garantia dos direitos fundamentais e melhor qualidade de vida às crianças acolhidas.

RESUMO Objetivo: derivar dados normativos preliminares de uma amostra da região Nordeste do Brasil para as habilidades iniciais de leitura e escrita em crianças de 5 anos. Também investigar o efeito do tipo de escola (publica x particular), do momento da avaliação (início x final do ano letivo) e se existem diferenças de desempenho significantes em relação às crianças do Sudeste. Métodos: avaliou-se 389 crianças de 5 anos de idade de 17 escolas privadas e 12 públicas no início e no final do ano letivo utilizando o Teste de Leitura e Escrita. Cada criança foi avaliada individualmente em dois momentos. Foram aplicados os testes estatísticos pertinentes adotando-se o nível de significância menor que 0,05. Resultados: o progresso no desempenho das crianças das escolas particulares foi mais pronunciado que o de seus pares das escolas públicas, acentuando a diferença de aprendizagem existente. A comparação com dados normativos da amostra do Sudeste mostrou que as escolas públicas do Nordeste obtiveram melhores resultados em todas as comparações. As escolas particulares do Sudeste tiveram maior desempenho que as do Nordeste na comparação com desempenho no início de ano, mas não na comparação com desempenho no final do ano. Conclusão: as diferenças de desempenho identificadas nas amostras sugerem a necessidade de se dispor de referenciais específicos por região geográfica e por tipo de escola (pública ou privada). Os dados aqui disponibilizados são preliminares e poderão ser ampliados em estudos futuros.

ABSTRACT Purpose: the study aims to obtain preliminary normative data for early reading and writing skills of 5-year-old children in a sample from the Northeast of Brazil. It also aims to investigate the effects of the type of school (public vs. private) and the time of assessment (beginning vs. end of the school year), and whether there were significant differences in performance, as compared to those of children from the Southeast of Brazil. Methods: 389 5-year-old children from 17 private and 12 public schools were assessed in the beginning and at the end of the school year, by using the Reading and Writing Test. Each student was individually assessed in the two times of the year. Appropriate statistical tests were applied, adopting a significance level lower than 0.05. Results: the progress in the performance of private school children was stronger than that of their peers from public schools, accentuating the existing learning gap. The comparison with normative data from the Southeast revealed that the public schools in the Northeast outperformed those in all topics of comparison. Private schools in the Southeast had a better performance at the beginning of the year, but were outperformed by those of the Northeast at the end of the year. Conclusion: the differences in performance identified in the samples suggest the need for specific norms by geographical regions of Brazil, and by type of school (public or private). The data presented in this study are preliminary and can be enlarged in future studies.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the presence of clinical and radiographic sequelae in primary teeth affected by dental trauma and its association with age at the time of trauma in children attended at a Public Higher Education Institution. Material and Methods: This is a longitudinal clinical study, in which 229 patients with history of dental trauma in primary teeth were examined, totaling 390 traumatized teeth. Relative frequency analysis was used, and for associations, the Chi-square test was used to verify the relationship of age at the time of trauma with variables such as type of trauma. Results: The most prevalent age group was over 24 months, and fall from own height as the main etiological factor; 71.0% of traumas had involvement of 2 teeth, 9.5% had history of anterior trauma and 66.6% of traumas involved supporting tissues. Regarding the type of injury to dental tissue, the most prevalent was enamel fracture (58.3%) and to periodontium, lateral dislocation (30.8%). Children older than two years had less trauma related to dental tissue (p<0.01), higher number of injuries to the periodontium (p=0.03); and most of them did not present extra-oral changes associated with trauma (p=0.01). During the 12-month period, 325 teeth were examined, and the most frequent clinical sequelae observed was crown discoloration. In the radiographic evaluation, inflammatory root resorption was the most prevalent. Conclusion: Children older than two years presented more injuries to the periodontium. After 12 months, the main clinical sequelae observed was enamel discoloration and the main radiographic sequelae was inflammatory root resorption.

RESUMO: O presente estudo determinou a frequência de genes de virulência de Staphylococcus aureus em 2253 amostras de leite, sendo de vacas n=1000 e de cabras n=1253, procedentes das três regiões geográficas do estado de Pernambuco, Brasil. A presença de genes de fatores de virulência associados à adesão às células hospedeiras (fnbA, fnbB, clfA e clfB), toxinosis (sea, seb, sec, sed, seg, seh, sei, tsst, hla e hlb) e polissacarídeo capsular (cap5 e cap8) foram avaliadas por PCR. Um total de 123 e 27 cepas de S. aureus foram isoladas do leite de vacas e cabras, respectivamente. Os genes sec e tsst foram detectados exclusivamente em isolados de cabras, enquanto o gene seh foi identificado apenas em isolados de vaca. O número de genes de toxina por cepa mostrou que os isolados de cabras são potencialmente mais tóxicos do que os isolados obtidos de bovinos. O genótipo cap5 predominou em ambas as espécies hospedeiras, especialmente em cepas coletadas de vacas criadas na região Agreste. O genótipo cap8 é potencialmente mais virulento devido ao número de genes de virulência por isolado. Os resultados do presente estudo demonstram que S. aureus pode representar uma ameaça potencial para a saúde humana no Brasil e, portanto, estes resultados devem subsidiar ações relacionadas aos programas de controle de mastite.

ABSTRACT: The present study determined the frequency of Staphylococcus aureus virulence genes in 2,253 milk samples of cows (n=1000) and goats (n=1253) raised in three different geographical regions of the state Pernambuco, Brazil. The presence of genes of virulence factors associated to adhesion to host cells (fnbA, fnbB, clfA and clfB), toxinosis (sea, seb, sec, sed, seg, seh, sei, tsst, hla and hlb), and capsular polysaccharide (cap5 and cap8) was evaluated by PCR. A total of 123 and 27 S. aureus strains were isolated from cows’ and goats’ milk, respectively. The sec and tsst genes were detected exclusively in goats’ isolates, while the seh gene was only identified in cows’ isolates. The number of toxin genes per strain showed that goats’ isolates are likely more toxic than bovines’ isolates. The cap5 genotype predominated in both host species, especially in strains collected from cows raised in the Agreste region. The cap8 genotype is likely more virulent due to the number of virulence genes per strain. The results of the present study demonstrate that S. aureus may pose a potential threat to human health in Brazil, and, therefore, these results should support actions related to mastitis control programs.
