ABSTRACT Background: The aim of this research was to investigate the efficiency of methods to overcome primary dormancy and biochemical processes associated with germination of Erythrina falcata Benth seeds. Seeds were submitted to dormancy overcoming treatments and the water uptake pattern was analysed. We then evaluated the activity of the antioxidant enzymes SOD, CAT, and APX, and quantified lipid peroxidation levels, hydrogen peroxide content and total protein content. The experiments were performed in a completely randomized design and the statistical analysis used was Scott-Knott test at 5% probability. Results: Mechanical scarification with sandpaper leads to approximately 94% of germination in E. falcata, while control non-scarified seeds show only approximately 37% of germination. Treatments with hot water led to high mortality in E. falcata seeds. Rapid water absorption was observed in the first 18 hours of imbition when the seeds were scarified with sandpaper, and radicle emergence was observed after 36 hours. During imbibition there was an increase of antioxidant enzyme activity and a decrease in lipid peroxidation and H2O2 production, suggesting an efficient mechanism for regulating imbibition damage. A decrease in the total protein content was observed during germination of E. falcata seeds. Conclusions: Mechanical scarification is an efficient method for breaking dormancy of E. falcata seeds. During germination of E. falcata seeds there is a reduction in the production of H2O2 and lipid peroxidation, and an increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The total protein content decreased along the germination time.

ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to evaluate the the ability of foliar application of potassium nitrate (KNO3) to induce water deficit tolerance in sorghum plants (Sorghum bicolor cv. P898012) subjected to water deficit at pre-flowering. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions with 4 treatments: field capacity (FC), water deficit (WD), field capacity + KNO3 (FC + KNO3), and water deficit + KNO3 (WD + KNO3). Two foliar applications of 3% (m/v) KNO3 were made, the first on day zero of stress and the second on the fifth day. All analyses were performed after 12 days of stress (end of stress). Foliar application of KNO3 to irrigated plants led to increases in relative chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration, and carboxylation efficiency. It also induced increases in leaf concentrations of P, Mg, S, Cu, and Fe, in addition to height growth. Under water deficit conditions, plants treated with KNO3 presented higher relative chlorophyll content, leaf area, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration, carboxylation efficiency, and higher levels of P, K, Mg, S, Cu, and Fe than those not treated with KNO3. The morphometry of the root system was not altered by the treatments. In addition, plants treated with KNO3 under water deficit conditions showed higher growth and a grain yield 32.2% higher than those that did not receive KNO3. These results demonstrated that KNO3 applied to the leaves induced water deficit tolerance in sorghum plants subjected to severe water stress at pre-flowering.

ABSTRACT. The present research seeks to elucidate the feasibility of chitosan (CHT) in the induction of water deficit tolerance in different maize hybrids, contrasting tolerance to water restriction, tolerance and sensitivity. The maize plants were subjected to water deficit and foliar application of different chitosan doses (60, 100, 140, and 180 mg L-1) at the pre-flowering growth stage and evaluated during the stress period of fifteen days. To understand the induction behaviour of the tolerance to water restriction, biophysical parameters, such as water potential, relative water content and chlorophyll content, gas exchange, and biochemical assays, were quantified based on the activity of SOD, CAT, APX, and PAL antioxidant enzymes, lipid peroxidation activity and hydrogen peroxide content. Among the treatments, maize plants subjected to chitosan foliar application at a dose of 140 mg L-1 presented similar behavioural responses to plants under favourable irrigation conditions. Such positive responses are related to the high degree of activity of antioxidant enzymes, gas exchange and low levels of lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide. The results support the potential use of CHT to increase tolerance to water stress.

RESUMO Folhas e cascas do caule de Stryphnodendron adstringens, uma espécie do Cerrado brasileiro, foram utilizadas para examinar os padrões sazonais da atividade da fenilalanina amônia-liase e os teores de fenóis e taninos totais em 16 indivíduos adultos, em condições de campo. Avaliações das trocas gasosas, incluindo fotossíntese líquida, transpiração, condutância estomática, densidade de fluxo de fótons fotossinteticamente ativos, temperatura da folha, deficit de pressão de vapor e potencial hídrico foliar foram realizadas. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise de componentes principais. A condutância estomática, fotossíntese líquida, transpiração, eficiência do uso da água, potencial hídrico mínimo e densidade de fluxo de fótons fotossinteticamente ativos foram maiores na estação chuvosa, enquanto que o potencial hídrico máximo e o deficit de pressão de vapor na atmosfera foram semelhantes entre as estações. As variações sazonais nas características de trocas gasosas foram influenciadas por mudanças nas condições climáticas e se correlacionaram positivamente com as maiores temperaturas, precipitação e umidade relativa do ar e negativamente com o aumento da insolação. Não houve correlação entre o potencial hídrico foliar máximo e as demais variáveis climáticas. A atividade da fenilalanina amônia-liase foi semelhante nas estações seca e chuvosa e os maiores teores de fenóis e taninos totais foram observados nas estações seca e chuvosa, respectivamente. A atividade da fenilalanina amônia-liase e os teores de fenóis totais foram influenciados negativamente pela temperatura e precipitação na estação seca, e os teores de taninos totais foram correlacionados principalmente com temperaturas mais elevadas, com menor influência da precipitação na estação chuvosa.

ABSTRACT There were performed analyses of the leaves and stem bark of Stryphnodendron adstringens, a Brazilian Cerrado plant, to examine the seasonal patterns of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity and total phenol and tannin contents in 16 adult individuals under field conditions. The measurements of gas exchange parameters, including net photosynthesis, transpiration and stomatal conductance, as well as the photosynthetic photon flux density, leaf temperature, vapor pressure deficit and leaf water potential were also performed. The results were subjected to a principal component analysis. The values obtained for stomatal conductance, net photosynthesis, transpiration, water use efficiency, minimum water potential and photosynthetic photon flux density were higher in the rainy season, while the maximum water potential and vapor pressure deficit in the atmosphere were similar between seasons. The seasonal variations in gas exchange characteristics were influenced by changing weather conditions and were positively correlated with higher air temperatures, rainfall amounts and relative air humidity and negatively correlated with increased insolation. There was no correlation between the maximum leaf water potential and any of the weather variables. Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity was similar in the dry and rainy seasons, and higher levels of total phenols and tannins were observed in the dry and rainy seasons, respectively. Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity and total phenol contents were negatively influenced by temperature and rainfall in the dry season, and the total tannin contents were mainly correlated with higher temperatures and a lower influence of rainfall in the rainy season.

RESUMO Mudas de Peltophorum dubium (Sprengel) Taubert foram submetidas a 60 dias de alagamento, com e sem a aplicação de cálcio. Durante esse período, foram avaliados: crescimento, anatomia radicular e teor de clorofila. As taxas de crescimento relativo (TCR) de raiz e parte aérea foram maiores nas plantas não alagadas. O alagamento, com e sem aplicação do cálcio, afetou negativamente o comprimento das raízes, mas isso não afetou a parte aérea e o diâmetro do caule. As análises anatômicas mostraram aumento na espessura do esclerênquima nos tratamentos alagado e alagado + Ca+ aos 15 e 60 dias, e o diâmetro dos vasos foi menor aos 45 dias. Nos teores de clorofila foram registradas diferenças entre os tratamentos, porém não foram diferenças estatisticamente significativas. Os resultados indicam que a Peltophorum dubium é espécie candidata para reflorestamento em áreas sujeitas a alagamento contínuo por até 60 dias, uma vez que não foi observada mortalidade.

ABSTRACT Peltophorum dubium (Sprengel) Taubert seedlings were submitted to 60 days of flooding, with and without Ca+. During this period, growth, root anatomy and chlorophyll content were analyzed. The relative growth rates (RGR) of roots and shoots were higher in non-flooded plants. The flooded treatments, with and without Ca+, have affected the roots growth but did not affect the shoot and the stem diameter. The anatomy analysis showed thickening of the sclerenchyma in 15 and 60 days in the flooded treatments with and without Ca+, and the vessel diameter was smaller at 45 days. The chlorophyll content differed, however it was not statistically significant. The results indicate that Peltophorum dubium as candidate specie for reforestation in areas subjected to continuous flooding for up to 60 days, since no mortality was observed.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar diferentes métodos de superação de dormência, condições ótimas de germinação, tais como luz, temperatura, e possível reindução da tolerância à dessecação em sementes de Senna multijuga. Foram testados dois métodos de superação de dormência: imersão em água com temperatura inicial de 100ºC (água quente) e imersão em água com temperatura constante a 100ºC por 20 segundos (água fervente), ambos os tratamentos seguidos de repouso fora do aquecimento por 24 horas. Para o teste de germinação, foram avaliados os regimes térmicos 25ºC, 30ºC (constantes) e 20-30°C (alternados), na presença e ausência de luz. Para o teste de reindução da tolerância à dessecação, foram selecionadas sementes germinadas com 1, 2, 3 e 4 mm de comprimento radicular e submetidas aos tratamentos de dessecação: sem incubação; com incubação em solução de polietilenoglicol (PEG6000) nas concentrações de -1,4; -1,7 e -2,0MPa; com incubação em solução de PEG -1,4MPa + ABA nas concentrações de 1, 10 e 100 μM. O delineamento inteiramente casualizado (DIC) foi utilizado em todos os experimentos com 4 repetições de 25 sementes. A superação de dormência utilizando água quente proporcionou germinabilidade superior a 65%. As sementes de Senna multijuga, apesar de não serem fotoblásticas positivas obrigatórias, apresentaram maior porcentagem de germinação sob condições de luz. Foi possível observar a retomada do crescimento após a secagem em sementes germinadas com radículas de até 3 mm de comprimento.

ABSTRACT The aims of this study were to verify the effects of different tests in the overcoming dormancy, excellent germination terms, as light and temperature, and the possibility of re-induction of desiccation tolerance in Senna multijuga seeds. We evaluated two tests for overcoming dormancy: immersion in water with an initial temperature of 100ºC (hot water) and immersion in water at a constant temperature at 100ºC for 20 seconds (boiling water), both treatments followed by rest out of the heating for 24 hours. For the germination test, we evaluated 25ºC, 30ºC (constant) and 20-30ºC (alternate), in the presence and absence of light. For the re-induction of desiccation tolerance, we selected seeds germinated with 1, 2, 3 and 4mm of radicle length. We submitted the germinated seeds to the follow treatments: no incubation, incubation in polyethylene glycol (PEG6000) at the -1,4, -1,7 and -2,0MPa; incubation in PEG -1,4MPa + ABA at the concentrations of 1, 10 and 100μM. The tests followed a completely randomized design (DIC) using 4 repetitions of 25 seeds. The overcoming dormancy using hot water provided the best germination (65%). The Senna multijuga seeds are not photoblastic required, but in light conditions the germination was higher. We observed the resumption of the radicle growth in germinated seeds of up to 3mm length.

A aplicação de eliciadores em plantas é utilizada em estudos de fisiologia para compreensão dos mecanismos de defesa ao ataque de herbívoros ou infecção por patógenos. Em virtude disso, foi avaliado o efeito do eliciador exógeno quitosana no sistema antioxidante enzimático de jaborandi (Piper mollicomum Kunth). Foram avaliadas as atividades das enzimas ascorbato peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT) e superóxido dismutase (SOD) e as concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2) e malonaldeído (MDA), ambas análises para verificar a peroxidação lipídica. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados (DBC), constituído de um fatorial (5x2) composto pelos controles sem quitosana (plantas sem pulverização e plantas pulverizadas apenas com o solvente de diluição da quitosana) e concentrações de quitosana (2,5; 5,0 e 10,0 g L-1) em dois estádios de desenvolvimento foliar (em desenvolvimento e completamente expandida). Nas folhas completamente expandidas, o sistema antioxidante foi mais ativo. A CAT teve maior participação no sequestro de radicais livres, induzido pela aplicação da quitosana em ambos os estádios de desenvolvimento foliar. A APX foi induzida somente nas folhas completamente expandidas e na maior concentração de quitosana. O método do MDA foi melhor para evidenciar a diferença nos teores de peróxido de hidrogênio, em função do estresse induzido pela quitosana. De acordo com os resultados obtidos neste ensaio, pode-se sugerir que, nas plantas de jaborandi, as enzimas antioxidativas são requisitadas em resposta ao eliciador em questão, a quitosana, compondo, assim, o mecanismo de defesa dessas plantas.

Elicitors are used in plant physiology studies for comprehension of defense mechanisms against herbivore attach and pathogen infections. For this reason, the exogenous chitosan effect was tested as an elicitor on Jaborandi (Piper mollicomum Kunth). Thus, it was evaluated the elicitor effect in the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) ,ascorbate peroxidase (APX),hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malonaldehyde (MDA) concentrations to estimate the lipid peroxidation. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in a factorial 5x2, being 2 controls (plants without pulverization and plants sprayed only with a diluting solvent chitosan) and 3 chitosan concentrations (2.5; 5.0 and 10.0 g L-1) in 2 leaf development stage (in development and fully expanded). At the fully expanded leaves, the antioxidant system presented higher active. The CAT had greater involvement in the kidnapping of free radicals induced by the application of chitosan in both leaf stages of development. The APX was induced only in fully expanded leaves and the highest concentration of chitosan. The MDA method was better to highlight the difference in hydrogen peroxide content as a function of stress induced by chitosan. According to the results of this test, it can be suggested that the plants Jaborandi antioxidant enzymes are required in response to the elicitor in question, chitosan, thus composing the defense mechanism of these plants.

RESUMO Bauhinia forficata Link é uma espécie arbórea de interesse medicinal e agronômico. Devido à importância da espécie objetivou-se avaliar características da germinação de B. forficata, bem como a capacidade desta espécie em manter a tolerância à dessecação após a germinação. Os resultados indicam B. forficata como uma espécie com capacidade de reindução de tolerância à dessecação. Através de eletromicrografias de varredura foi possível entender os efeitos positivos de uma secagem lenta em sementes germinadas. Conclui-se então que B. forficata possui capacidade de re-indução de tolerancia à dessecação com até 4mm de comprimento de radícula, quando tratada com solução de PEG à -1,4MPa.

ABSTRACT Bauhinia forficata is a tree with medicinal and agronomic interest. Due to the importance of the species, the work aimed to evaluate some characteristics of germination of B. forficata and estimate its capacity to maintain the desiccation tolerance after the germination. The results indicate that B. forficata is a species with capacity to reinduction of the desiccation tolerance. The scanning electron micrographs show the benefits of slow drying in germinated seeds. In conclusion, B. forficata is a species with capacity to reinduction to desiccation tolerance until 4mm of radicle, when subjected to treatment using PEG -1,4MPa.

A perda dos benefícios do condicionamento, após a ressecagem, é um dos problemas do condicionamento. Para conservar os benefícios, têm sido utilizados diferentes estresses antes da secagem. Esse processo poderia agir como tolerância cruzada, aumentando os mecanismos de defesa, prevenindo a perda de viabilidade em sementes condicionadas após a secagem. Assim, testou-se o efeito de estresses, na tentativa de induzir tolerância cruzada, após diferentes secagens, mantendo os benefícios do condicionamento em sementes de melão. Dessa forma, as sementes foram condicionadas em solução aerada de KNO3 (0,35M), -1,7 MPa, 25 °C, no escuro, por seis dias. Depois disso, foram submetidas à secagem lenta, rápida, choque de frio + secagem lenta e rápida, choque de calor + secagem lenta e rápida, PEG + secagem lenta e rápida, ABA + secagem lenta e rápida e sementes sem secagem. As sementes não condicionadas foram o controle. Foi avaliada a atividade das enzimas SOD, CAT e APX, germinabilidade, tempo médio de germinação e taxa média de germinação. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualisado (DIC) com três repetições, contendo 50 sementes para cada tratamento. Para a análise estatística dos dados, foi utilizado ANOVA e as médias comparadas pelo teste de Scott-Knott (p ≤ 0,05). A aplicação de ABA aumentou a atividade da SOD após a secagem e o condicionamento reduziu a atividade da CAT. O estresse inicial, antes da secagem, aumentou- a e reduziu o tempo médio de germinação. Contudo, a indução do mecanismo de tolerância cruzada pode ser efetiva na manutenção dos benefícios do condicionamento.

The loss of benefits after re-drying is one of the drawbacks of the seed priming technique. Different types of stresses have been used before re-drying to preserve the priming benefits. This process may be seen as promoting cross tolerance to increase the defense mechanisms that prevent loss of viability in seeds primed after drying. We tested the effect of some stresses to induce cross-tolerance and different drying conditions with the aim of maintaining priming benefits in melon seeds. The seeds were primed in an aerated KNO3 solution (0.35M), -1.7MPa, 25 °C, in the dark for six days. The primed seeds were then submitted to slow drying, fast drying, cold shock + slow drying, cold shock + fast drying, heat shock + slow drying, heat shock + fast drying, PEG + slow drying, PEG + fast drying, ABA + slow drying, ABA + fast drying and no drying (planted directly after priming). We evaluated antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT and APX), germinability, mean time of germination (MTG) and mean rate of germination (MRG). A completely randomized design was used with three repetitions of 50 seeds in each treatment. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and means were compared by the Scott-Knott test (p ≤ 0.05). ABA increased SOD activity after drying and CAT activity was reduced by priming. APX activity was not observed. The stress submission prior to re-drying improved the MRG and reduced MTG. Therefore, the induction of the cross-tolerance mechanism could be effective to maintain priming benefits in melon seeds.

Piper aduncum L. is a shrub specie, found mainly in soil with elevated organic matter and humidity. The essential oil containing insecticide and bactericide action, and also has broad application in agricultural and medicinal areas. The objective of this study is to characterize the lamina of P. aduncum. There was realized anatomical and histochemical characterization of paradermic, and anatomical characterization of transversal sections from apical region, median and basal of leaf blade, prepared according to usual technique of light and electronic microscopy of scaning. The mesophyll is dorsiventral with subcelular layer in both epiderms. In the epidermis and subcelular layers, it was only found the presence of total protein. In the palisade and spongyous parenchyma were found starch total and insaturated lipids. In the fundamental parenchyma there were visualized starch, protein, total lipids, ortodihidroxiphenols and terpenoid with carbonil group. There are present unicellular idioblasts in subcelular layers, epiderm or mesophyll. It is hipoestomatic, contains tetracitic stomates. There were observed short trichome tector unicellular with fine cap, pluricelular with fine cap and glandular sac- like trichome and perolated glandula. In the basal portion of the tector trichomes there were found total protein. In the oil idioblast there were observed the presence of total lipids, ortodihidroxiphenols, sesquiterpenic lactones and terpenoid with carbonil group, while it was possible to observe in the sac-like trichomes, protein, total lipids and ortodihidroxiphenols.

Piper aduncum L. (Piperaceae) es una especie arbustiva umbrófila que se encuentra generalmente en suelos con elevado contenido de materia orgánica y humedad. De las hojas se extrae aceite esencial con acción insecticida, fungicida y bactericida, con una amplia utilización en el sector agrario y medicinal. El objetivo del trabajo fue caracterizar el limbo de P. aduncum. Se efectuó la caracterización anatómica e histoquímica de la sección transversal y la caracterización anatómica de la sección paradérmica apical, mediana y basal del limbo. Para ello las hojas fueron preparadas con las técnicas tradicionales de microscopía de luz y microscopía electrónica. El mesófilo es dorsiventral con capas subcelulares en ambas epidermis. En la epidermis y las capas subcelulares sólo se encontró la presencia de proteínas totales. En el parénquima en empalizada y en el parénquima esponjoso fueron observados almidón, lípidos totales e insaturados. En el parénquima fundamental fueron encontrados almidón, proteína, lípidos totales, ortodihidroxifenoles y terpenoides con grupo carbonilo. Están presentes idioblastos unicelulares en las capas subcelulares de la epidermis del mesófilo hipoestomático, los estomas son tetracíticos y salientes. En los idioblastos oleíferos fue detectada la presencia de lípidos totales, ortodihidroxifenoles, lactonas sesquiterpénicas y terpenoides con grupo carbonilo. Fueron observados tricomas tectores unicelulares cortos, de extremos agudos, pluricelulares de extremos agudos y capitados, y tricomas glandulares saculares y glándulas perladas. En la porción basal de los tricomas tectores fueron encontradas proteínas totales y en los tricomas saculares, proteína, lípidos totales y ortodihidroxifenoles.

Sebastiania membranifolia, popularmente conhecida como sarandi, é uma espécie arbórea nativa do Brasil, geralmente encontrada em terrenos de várzeas aluviais e beira de rios, indicada para reflorestamentos destinados à recuperação de áreas degradadas. Apesar da importância comercial dessa espécie, pouco se sabe sobre os seus mecanismos de propagação. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se avaliar o comportamento germinativo das sementes em diferentes condições de temperatura, substrato e luz, e determinar métodos de superação de dormência, de forma a estabelecer um protocolo adequado para propagação sexuada. Este estudo foi conduzido em câmaras BOD com controle térmico e de fotoperíodo, testando os seguintes tratamentos: temperaturas de 25; 30 e alternada 20/30ºC; substratos (areia-EA; sobre papel-SP e entre papel-EP); quatro soluções de giberelina (50; 100; 200; 400 mgL-1 ); nitrato de potássio (0,1; 0,2; 0,3 e 0,4%), na presença (12 h de fotoperíodo) e ausência de luz. O delineamento empregado foi em DIC com quatro repetições de 50 sementes cada. Observamos que o grau médio de umidade das sementes foi de 10,4% e o peso de mil sementes (PMS) de 3,16 g. O maior percentual de germinação foi obtido com fotoperíodo, a 25ºC, sobre papel (SP) e entre papel (EP). As concentrações de 100 mg L-1 de giberelina e 0,1% de nitrato de potássio proporcionaram maior germinação e vigor. O tratamento das sementes com solução de giberelina a 100 mgL-1 favoreceu o crescimento das plântulas, ao contrário do nitrato de potássio que inibiu o crescimento mesmo em baixa concentração.

Sebastiania membranifolia, popularly known as sarandi, is a tree species native to Brazil, usually found in land of alluvial floodplains and river banks, suitable for restoration of degraded areas. Despite the commercial importance of this species, little is known about its mechanisms of propagation. This research evaluated the germinating seeds under different conditions of temperature, substrate and light, and determined methods of scarification in order to establish a suitable protocol for sexual propagation. The study was conducted in chambers with BOD and thermal control photoperiod, testing the following treatments: temperatures of 25, 30 and alternating 20/30º C; substrates (sand-EA, on paper-SP and from paper -EP), four solutions gibberellin (50, 100, 200, 400 mgL-1); potassium nitrate (0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4%) in the presence (12 h photoperiod) and absence of light. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replications of 50 seeds each. We found that the average degree of seed moisture was 10.4% and the weight of a thousand seeds (PMS) of 3.16 g. The highest percentage of germination was obtained with photoperiod at 25 º C, on paper (SP) and between role (EP). The concentrations of 100 mg L-1 gibberellin and 0.1% potassium nitrate showed higher germination and vigor. Seed treatment with a gibberellin solution of 100 mgL-1 favored the growth of seedlings, unlike potassium nitrate that inhibit the growth even at low concentration.

A obtenção de mudas nativas requer informações sobre a época de coleta das sementes, condições de armazenamento e luminosidade, germinação e tipos de substrato, dentre outras. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar as exigências de luminosidade no crescimento inicial de mudas de pau-ferro [Caesalpinia ferrea Mart. ex. Tul. var. leiostachya Benth (Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae)] submetidas a diferentes níveis de sombreamento, aos 60 dias após o transplante (DAT). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 3x5 (três níveis de sombreamento: 0%, 50% e 70%; e cinco épocas de avaliação: 60, 90, 120, 150 e 180 DAT), com quatro repetições de 10 mudas por unidade experimental. Plantas cultivadas sob 70% de sombreamento apresentaram maiores teores de clorofila total (38,79 µg cm-2), razão de área foliar (51,54 g cm-2), taxa de crescimento relativo (0,0322 g g-1 dia-1) e razão de peso foliar (0,2708 g g-1). Os maiores valores para altura (110,34 cm), diâmetro (9,3 mm) e massa seca da raiz (11,13 g), da folha (5,59 g) e da parte aérea (16,05 g), bem como para área foliar (705,25 cm²), foram observados nas plantas cultivadas sob 50% de sombreamento. Não foram observadas diferenças quanto ao crescimento da raiz, peso específico foliar, taxa assimilatória líquida e área foliar específica, em relação aos diferentes níveis de luminosidade testados (médias de 9,3 cm; 0,0082 g cm-2; 0,0006 g cm-2 dia-1; e 186,24 g cm-2, respectivamente). As mudas de pau-ferro apresentaram melhor desempenho de crescimento quando cultivadas sob 50% de sombreamento.

Obtaining native seedlings requires information about seeds harvest time, storage and luminosity conditions, germination and types of substrate, among others. This study aimed at evaluating the luminosity demands for the initial growth of Caesalpinia ferrea Mart. ex. Tul. var. leiostachya Benth (Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae) seedlings submitted to different shading levels, at 60 days after transplant (DAT). The experimental design was completely randomized, in 3x5 factorial scheme (three shading levels: 0%, 50% and 70%; and five evaluation times: 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 DAT), with four replications of 10 seedlings per experimental unit. Plants grown under the shading level of 70% presented the highest contents for total chlorophyll (38.79 µg cm-2), leaf area ratio (51.54 g cm-2), relative growth rate (0.0322 g g-1 day-1) and leaf weight ratio (0.2708 g g-1). The highest values for stem height (110.34 cm) and base diameter (9.3 mm), and root (11.13 g), leaf (5.59 g) and shoot (16.05 g) dry matter, as well as leaf area (705.25 cm²), were observed in the plants cultivated under the shading level of 50%. No differences were observed for root growth, specific leaf weight, net assimilation rate and specific leaf area, concerning the different shading levels tested (averages of 9.3 cm, 0.0082 g cm-2, 0.0006 g cm-2 day-1 and 186.24 g cm-2, respectively). The Caesalpinia ferrea seedlings presented a better growth rate when cultivated under the shading level of 50%.

Qualea grandiflora Mart. (Vochysiaceae), conhecida como pau-terra, é uma espécie arbórea nativa do cerrado brasileiro que apresenta interesse comercial, como ornamental e medicinal, podendo ainda ser empregada em reflorestamentos heterogêneos, destinados á recomposição de áreas degradadas de preservação permanente. Estudos de propagação com essa espécie são escassos, sendo necessários maiores esclarecimentos quanto aos fatores que influenciam no processo germinativo. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se avaliar a influência de diferentes temperaturas, substratos e condições de luminosidade na germinação de sementes de pau-terra. Foram selecionadas sementes de coloração marrom clara e submetidas a interação entre temperaturas (15-25, 20-30, 25 e 30°C), substratos (sobre papel, entre areia e entre vermiculita) e luz (claro e escuro), e a secagem em estufa a 32 °C, por 3, 6 e 12 horas. Após o tratamento, as sementes foram mantidas em BOD com 58% UR e calculados os parâmetros germinabilidade (%G) e índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG), formação da plântula normal e anormais e de sementes mortas. Foi observada interação para todas as variáveis analisadas. Na faixa de temperatura ótima, as sementes apresentaram comportamento fotoblástico neutro ou indiferente. Sob temperaturas alternadas, o escuro favoreceu a germinação, principalmente quando em combinação com a temperatura mais baixa. A semeadura entre areia a 25 °C permite a manutenção de combinações adequadas para a germinação e desenvolvimento da plântula. Com relação à tolerância a dessecação, as sementes de pau terra apresentam comportamento ortodoxo, havendo um incremento linear do vigor em função da secagem.

Qualea grandiflora Mart. (Vochysiaceae), commonly known as "pau-terra", is an arborous species native to the Brazilian savannah which possess commercial interests, as it can be used either as an ornamental or as a medicinal plant. "Pau-terra" can also be used in the heterogeneous reforestation of areas which are destined for restoration of permanent preservation degraded areas. Propagation studies with this species are scarce, being necessary then further clarification regarding the factors that influences the germination process. In this context, the objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of different temperatures, substrates and light conditions on seed germination. We selected light brown seeds which were subjected to different interactions between temperatures (15-25, 20-30, 25 and 30°C), substrate (paper, sand and vermiculite) and light (light and dark). All seeds were later dry-incubated at 32°C for 3, 6 and 12 hours. After treatments, seeds were kept in BOD at 58% RH and the following parameters were calculated: germination (%G) and germination speed index (GSI); the formation of normal and abnormal seedlings and the number dead seeds. Interaction was observed for all variables. In the optimum temperature range, the seeds behaved as photoblastic neutral or indifferent. Under alternating temperatures, darkness enhanced the germination, especially when combined with the lower temperatures. We noted that the sowing in sand, at 25°C, allowed the maintenance of suitable combinations of germination and seedling development. With respect to desiccation tolerance, "pau-terra" seeds presented an orthodox behavior, with a linear increase of the vigor as function of drying.

Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, avaliar o efeito de diferentes doses do regulador vegetal do grupo das citocininas, cinetina, e de nitrato de potássio aplicados via foliar na fase fenológica R3 (início da frutificação) na produtividade e características agronômicas da soja em condições de campo. O experimento foi conduzido em Itutinga, MG, utilizando-se 0, 250, 500, 750 e 1.000 mg de cinetina ha-1 combinadas com as doses de 0, 5, 10 e 15 kg de nitrato de potássio ha-1 em esquema fatorial, num delineamento de blocos casualizados, com três repetições. Avaliou-se o posicionamento dos legumes nas plantas em três posições do dossel, dividido em inferior, médio e superior. A aplicação de nitrato de potássio não influenciou nenhuma das características avaliadas. A cinetina aumentou o número total de legumes fixados em até 27,4%, principalmente, os do terço inferior e mediano do dossel. Observaram-se aumentos dos legumes no terço médio de até 20,7%, perante a testemunha. A produção por planta foi incrementada em até 27,1%, utilizando a maior dose. Atribui-se a causa dos efeitos da cinetina ao aumento dos níveis endógenos de citocininas que contribuíram para uma maior produção e melhor redistribuição de fotoassimilados para os legumes e sementes.

The study aimed to evaluate the effect of kinetin and potassium nitrate applied to leaves, at the R3 phenological phase, on some agronomic characteristics of soybean plants and their yield per plant in the field. The experiment was carried out in Itutinga, MG, using five kinetin concentrations (0, 250, 500, 750 and 1.000 mg kinetin ha-1) combined with four potassium nitrate concentrations (0, 5, 10 and 15 kg ha-1) in a factorial scheme using a randomized block experimental design, with three replications. The positioning of numbers of pods per plant was evaluated in three positions in the canopy: lower, middle and upper. The application of potassium nitrate did not influence the studied characteristics. Kinetin increased the total set pod number by 27.4% in contrast to the control, mainly in the lower and middle thirds of the canopy. The kinetin increased the pod set number up to 20.7%, in the middle third. The yield per plant was increased up to 27.1% using the highest kinetin concentration. The increases were attributed to an increase in the endogenous cytokinin levels that contribute to the higher production and better redistribution of assimilates to the pods and seeds.

Para avaliar o comportamento germinativo de Miconia ligustroides (DC.) Naudin, diásporos foram submetidos a diferentes regimes de temperatura, luz e substrato. Devido à baixa germinabilidade dos diásporos, foram realizados tratamentos de superação de dormência endógena e exógena. Miconia ligustroides apresenta dormência complexa e para superá-la recomenda-se a imersão dos diásporos em H2SO4 diluído a 75% por 5 minutos, seguida de lavagem e embebição em solução de 400 mg L-1 de GA3 por 12 horas. A semeadura deve ser realizada em papel Germtest® à 25 °C.

To assess the germination behavior of Miconia ligustroides (DC.) Naudin, diaspores were submitted to different regimes of temperature, light and substrate. Due to intrinsic low germination of the diaspores, they were submitted to treatments that aimed to overcome endogenous and exogenous dormancy. Miconia ligustroides presents complex dormancy and to overcome it is recommended to soak the diaspores in H2SO4 diluted at 75% for 5 minutes, wash it and then soak it in a solution of 400 mg L-1 of GA3 for 12 hours. Seeding should be done on Germtest® paper at 25 °C.
