Abstract The purpose of this study was to isolate Toxoplasma gondii from tissues of free-range chickens in the southwestern region of Goiás, to detect and molecularly characterize the genetic material of the parasite, and to determine the seroprevalence of the protozoan parasite in these animals. A seroprevalence of T. gondii antibodies of 76% (19/25) was found among the chickens, while genetic material from their tissues was detected in 56% (14/25). A total of 14 isolates was obtained in the bioassay, ten of which were considered acute, eight were considered isolates of high virulence lethal to mice, and four of low virulence, considered non-lethal but with the ability to chronify the infection. Seven of the ten isolates showed significant morphometric differences from the RH strain, in terms of nucleus-complex-apical distance, length and width. Genotyping of the acute isolates was performed by RFLP-PCR, using 11 genetic markers: SAG1, SAG2 (3’SAG2 and 5’SAG2), alt.SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29-2, L358, PK1, and APICO. The results were compared and classified according to the genotypes listed on the ToxoDB Platform, where different profiles were observed indicating the presence of two known genotypes (#7 and #63) and five new genotypes (NEW 3, NEW4, NEW5, NEW6, NEW 7). The results showed high seroprevalence, isolation rate, molecular detection and genotypic variations of T. gondii in free-range chickens in the southwestern region of Goiás.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi isolar Toxoplasma gondii de tecidos de galinhas caipiras da região sudoeste de Goiás, detectar e caracterizar molecularmente o material genético do parasito e determinar a soroprevalência do protozoário nestes animais. A soropositividade para anticorpos anti- T. gondii, nas galinhas caipiras, foi de 76% (19/25), enquanto a detecção do material genético dos tecidos foi de 56% (14/25). Por meio do bioensaio foi obtido um total de 14 isolados, sendo 10 agudos, dos quais oito foram considerados isolados de elevada virulência, sendo letais para camundongos; e quatro de baixa virulência, com capacidade de cronificar a infecção, considerados não letais. Em sete dos dez isolados foram identificadas diferenças morfométricas significativas em relação à cepa RH, quanto à distância núcleo-complexo apical, comprimento e largura. A genotipagem dos isolados agudos por RFLP-PCR foi realizada, utilizando-se 11 marcadores genéticos SAG1, SAG2 (3´SAG2 e 5´SAG2), alt.SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29-2, L358, PK1, APICO. Os resultados foram comparados e classificados de acordo com os genótipos presentes na Plataforma ToxoDB, nos quais diferentes perfis foram observados indicando a presença de dois genótipos conhecidos (#7 e #63) e cinco genótipos novos (NEW 3, NEW4, NEW5, NEW6, NEW 7). Os resultados demonstraram elevada soroprevalência, taxa de isolamento, detecção molecular e variações genotípicas de T. gondii em galinhas caipiras da região sudoeste de Goiás.

Abstract Background International studies performed during the periods of social isolation highlighted the potential loss of student's learning skills. The present study fills a gap in Brazilian research on this topic and focuses on the development of reading fluency. Objective To investigate the development of the reading fluency of students in the early years of elementary school during e-learning as a result of the social distancing measures put into effect due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods Students from grades 2 to 5 were recorded. The number of words read per minute and of those read correctly per minute were analyzed. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed, using analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures with Bonferroni correction in the longitudinal study, and the t-test in the cross-sectional study. Results In the cross-sectional study, 162 students participated. Only the comparison between the 2nd grade classes of 2020 and 2021 showed a statistically significant difference. In the prepandemic classes, the students had better results in reading accuracy than the students assessed during the pandemic. The longitudinal study included 75 students, who improved in fluency rate and accuracy as expected between March and December 2020. In March 2021, the results showed a drop, which may be related to school closures during the Brazilian summer vacation. Conclusions The present research demonstrates the results of Brazilian students in terms of the development of reading fluency during the pandemic. There was an expressive development in grades 2 and 3, with stability in the following grades. The 2nd grade class of 2021 suffered a major impact due to the pandemic.

Resumo Antecedentes Estudos internacionais realizados durante os períodos de isolamento social destacaram a potencial perda das habilidades de aprendizagem dos alunos. O presente estudo preenche uma lacuna nas pesquisas brasileiras sobre este tema, e se centra no desenvolvimento da fluência de leitura. Objetivo Investigar o desenvolvimento da fluência de leitura de alunos nos anos iniciais do Ensino Fundamental durante as aulas remotas ministradas em decorrência das medidas de distanciamento social postas em prática por conta da pandemia de doença do coronavírus 2019 (coronavirus disease 2019, COVID-19, em inglês). Métodos Estudantes do 2o ao 5o anos foram gravados. Foram analisadoso número de palavras lidas por minuto e o de palavras lidas corretamente por minuto. Realizou-se análise estatística descritiva por meio de análise de variância (analysis of variance, ANOVA, em inglês) para medidas repetidas com correção de Bonferroni no estudo longitudinal, e teste T no estudo transversal. Resultados Ao todo, 162 estudantes participaram do estudo transversal. Apenas a comparação entre as turmas de 2o ano de 2020 e 2021 apresentou diferença estatisticamente significativa. Nas aulas pré-pandemia, as turmas apresentaram resultados melhores em termos de precisão de leitura do que as turmas avaliadas durante a pandemia. O estudo longitudinal incluiu 75 alunos; entre março e dezembro de 2020, eles melhoraram sua taxa de fluência e acurácia, conforme esperado. Em março de 2021, os resultados mostraram uma queda, o que pode estar relacionado ao fechamento das escolas durante as férias. Conclusões Esta pesquisa demonstra os resultados do desenvolvimento da leitura de uma amostra de estudantes brasileiros durante a pandemia. Houve uma evolução expressiva no 2° e 3° anos, com estabilidade nos anos seguintes. A turma de 2° ano de 2021 sofreu um grande impacto devido à pandemia.

ABSTRACT Knowledge about epidemiological distribution patterns of HIV infection in different geographic regions is relevant to understand the dynamics of the disease in Brazil. This study aims to characterize the epidemiological and clinical profile of HIV-infected patients from Southwestern Goias State, from 2005 to 2015. A standardized questionnaire was used to collect clinical-epidemiological, virological, and immunological data from the medical records of all HIV-infected patients (n=539) who were followed at the regional reference center of Jatai, Goias State, Brazil, from 2005 to 2015. We detected the prevalence of male patients and the heterosexual route of transmission, as well as an expressive number of young women infected with HIV. The HIV infection was more prevalent in reproductive ages (55.3%). Most patients presented clinical manifestations related to HIV infection at the time of diagnosis. Twenty-four patients presented coinfection with hepatitis C virus, syphilis, hepatitis B virus, leprosy or Chagas disease. Pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis jirovecii was the most common opportunistic infection, followed by neurotoxoplasmosis, tuberculosis, and neurocryptococcosis. Combined antiretroviral therapy improved CD4+ T-cell counts: the mean CD4+ T-cell counts after treatment was twice as high as those found at the first medical appointment; and highly active antiretroviral therapy promoted viral suppression in a significant number of patients. Considering the increasing distribution of HIV infection to the interior of Brazil, this descriptive study outlines the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of HIV infection in Southwestern Goias and contributes to develop local prevention strategies and public service plans.

OBJETIVOS: Identificar as atitudes apresentadas por acadêmicos de Medicina da UFJF/MG (2007) com relação a Riscos Ocupacionais (RO), Precauções Universais (PU) e Equipamentos de Proteção (EPI), bem como seus critérios para utilizá-los. MÉTODOS: Utilizou-se a amostragem aleatória estratificada, com reposição, sendo selecionados 204 alunos do quinto ao décimo período do curso, dos quais 180 responderam. RESULTADOS: a) 66,11% relatam participarem de procedimentos com RO durante a graduação e 55,2% afirmaram não conhecerem as PU; b) o conhecimento acerca do uso de EPI foi adquirido por meio de aulas (53,8%); na prática, por observação (37,2%); ou orientação de professores (28,8%); c) 79,4% dos alunos se consideram expostos aos vírus HIV/HBV; d) 10% declararam já terem sofrido acidente com risco biológico durante a graduação; e) 13,89% não são vacinados contra o vírus da hepatite B. CONCLUSÕES: Parte considerável dos alunos de Medicina apresenta déficits de conhecimentos acerca de PU. Apesar da relevante cobertura vacinal para hepatite B, os estudantes não realizam procedimentos sorológicos rotineiramente. As atividades práticas de ensino precocemente instituídas parecem influenciar positivamente no conhecimento acerca das PU.

OBJECTIVES: The objective was to identify the attitudes of medical students at UFJF/MG in 2007 concerning occupational risk (OR), universal precautions (UP), and personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as the criteria for their use. METHODS: The method was based on stratified random sampling with replacement, and 180 of 204 selected students from the 5th to 10th semesters of undergraduate medical school responded. RESULTS: More than half of the respondents reported being involved in procedures with OR during their undergraduate training, and 55.2% stated that they were unfamiliar with UP. Students had acquired knowledge about PPE through classes (53.8%), by practice and observation (37.2%), and through orientation from professors (28.8%). 79.4% of students considered themselves exposed to HIV/HBV. 10% reported having already suffered an accident involving biological risk during their undergraduate training. 13.8% were not vaccinated against hepatitis B. CONCLUSIONS: A large proportion of these medical students showed gaps in knowledge on UP. Despite relatively high HBV immunization coverage, the students did not submit to routine serological testing. Early practical training activities appeared to have a positive impact on acquisition of knowledge concerning UP.
