RESUMO Danos por ventos são frequentes em plantações florestais, e a utilização desta madeira pode minimizar os prejuízos causados. O objetivo foi avaliar a composição química e o potencial energético da madeira e carvão de árvores sujeitas a danos pelos ventos. Oito clones de Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla com idade de dois anos foram selecionados em região onde danos por ventos ocorrem com alta frequência. A densidade básica, poder calorífico, composição química da madeira e poder calorifico, química imediata e rendimento gravimétrico do carvão foram determinados para todos os clones. O rendimento gravimétrico de materiais com alto teor de lignina e baixa relação S/G foi maior. A densidade energética da madeira e carvão apresentou maior relação com a densidade básica e aparente, respectivamente. Todos os materiais apresentaram potencial para bioenergia, mas o clone E se destacou com alto rendimento gravimétrico e densidade energética.

ABSTRACT Wind damages are common in forest plantations and the use of this wood can minimize losses. The objective was to evaluate the chemical composition and the energetic potential of wood and charcoal from trees subject to wind damage. Eight (A to H) two-years-old Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla clones were selected in a region where wind damage is frequent. The basic density, calorific value, chemical composition of wood and calorific value, immediate chemistry and gravimetric yield of charcoal were determined for all clones. Materials with high lignin content and low S/G ratio had higher gravimetric yield. The energy density of wood and charcoal showed high relationship with the basic and apparent relative density, respectively. All materials showed potential for bioenergy, but the clone E stood out with higher gravimetric yield and energy density.

ABSTRACT The heterogeneous behavior of wood during drying is a process difficult to control. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the neuro-fuzzy hybrid system for monitoring wood moisture during drying. Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis samples (2 x 2 x 4 cm) were saturated and dried in climatic chamber for 15 days. Basic density was determined by the dry mass/saturated volume ratio. Two neuro-fuzzy systems were developed to monitor wood moisture, the first based on the genetic material and drying period and the second based on basic density and drying period. The drying rate of wood samples was higher at the initial period and all reached equilibrium moisture content after 15 days. Density showed relationship with wood moisture during the study period. Both systems have the potential to monitor moisture, however, neuro-fuzzy system based on basic density and drying period showed better results and is therefore more suitable.

RESUMO A madeira de eucalipto de árvores adultas é utilizada para os mais diversos fins, entretanto, a utilização desta madeira de árvores de idade precoce é limitada. O objetivo foi caracterizar e propor utilizações para madeira de eucalipto com dois anos de idade. Seis clones de Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla, com dois anos de idade, foram selecionados e suas características anatômicas, ultraestruturais, físicas e mecânicas avaliadas. A madeira do clone A apresentou fibras mais robustas e de melhor arranjo microfibrilar, resultando em melhores propriedades mecânicas e, por isto, melhor desempenho para uso estrutural. O clone F apresentou madeira com pouca variação da densidade básica no sentido radial, facilitando sua trabalhabilidade e, com o clone B, apresentou menor coeficiente de anisotropia e, por isto, a madeira é recomendada para locais com alta variação de umidade. A heterogeneidade das características da madeira dos clones avaliados corrobora a necessidade estudos por clone para uma sua melhor utilização.

ABSTRACT Eucalyptus wood from adult trees is used for several purposes; however, the wood of younger trees has limited use. This study aims to characterize and propose uses of two-year-old eucalyptus wood. Six two-year-old Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla clones have been selected and their anatomical, ultrastructural, physical and mechanical wood characteristics evaluated. The wood of Clone A shows more robust fibers with better microfibril arrangement, resulting in better mechanical properties, and therefore, a better performance for structural use. Clone F showed a low variation of wood basic density in the radial direction, facilitating its machinability, and with the Clone B, showed a lower anisotropy, and therefore, the wood is recommended for locations with high variations of humidity. The heterogeneity of the wood characteristics of the evaluated clones confirms the need for further studies, to choose those most adequate to each use.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi testar uma nova metodologia para avaliar a resistência das árvores aos danos causados pelos ventos e determinar as características que aumentam a resistência dos clones a estes danos. A resistência das árvores à ruptura e a tensão de crescimento, assim como a densidade básica, ultraestrutura, anatomia e propriedades mecânicas da madeira foram avaliadas em sete clones de Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla, recolhidos de uma região com uma alta incidência de danos provocados pelo vento. O coeficiente de correlação de Pearson entre a resistência à ruptura da árvore e a relação entre a área danificada pelos ventos e a área total plantada foi -0,839, mostrando a eficiência da metodologia adotada e que alta resistência à quebra resulta em baixa área afetada por danos pelos ventos. Árvores com uma alta densidade básica, fração da parede celular, módulo de elasticidade da lamela média e fibras, dureza da fibra, módulo de ruptura, tensão de crescimento e baixo ângulo microfibrilar e altura e largura dos raios apresentaram maior resistência a danos causados pelo vento. Portanto, a seleção de clones com estas características pode reduzir a incidência de danos causados por ventos em plantações de eucalipto.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to test a new methodology to assess the resistance of trees to wind damage and determine the characteristics that increase clone resistance to winds. Tree resistance to breakage, basic density, ultrastructure, anatomy, mechanical properties, and wood growth stress have been evaluated in seven Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla clones, collected from a region with a high incidence of wind damage. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the tree resistance to breakage and the ratio between the area damaged by the winds and the total planted area was -0.839, showing the efficiency of the methodology adopted and that high breaking strength results in a smaller area affected by wind damage. Trees with a high basic density, cell wall fraction, modulus of elasticity of the middle lamella and fibers, fiber hardness, modulus of rupture, growth stress and low microfibril angle and height and width of the rays showed greater resistance to wind damage. Therefore, the selection of clones with these features may reduce the incidence of damage by winds in Eucalyptus plantations.

RESUMO O transporte florestal representa uma grande proporção do custo da matéria-prima para a produção de papel e celulose, por esse motivo, o teor de umidade da madeira deve ser baixo para reduzir esses custos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi relacionar a umidade da madeira com o consumo de combustível por quilômetro em cada veículo e o número de viagens necessárias para abastecer uma fábrica de celulose. Três árvores de um clone de Eucalyptus urophylla e de Corymbia citriodora com produção seminal foram utilizadas. As árvores foram abatidas e seus troncos foram removidos de sua base e 50% e 100% da altura comercial. A densidade básica e a umidade inicial da madeira foram determinadas e a secagem ao ar foi monitorada durante 90 dias. O consumo de combustível para transportar uma tonelada de madeira seca e o número de viagens necessárias para abastecer uma fábrica de celulose foram estimados com base no número de dias de secagem. A secagem ao ar livre reduziu o consumo de combustível e o número de viagens para abastecer a fábrica de celulose. A precisão dos modelos para estimar a umidade da madeira, o consumo de combustível e o número de viagens com base nos dias de secagem apresentaram alta precisão. Portanto, a secagem de madeira é uma ferramenta essencial para reduzir os custos do transporte florestal.

ABSTRACT The forest transportation represents a great proportion of raw material cost for pulp and paper production and, for this reason, the wood moisture content should be low to reduce these cost. The objective was to relate the wood moisture with fuel consumption per kilometer in each vehicle and the number of trips to supply a pulp mill. Three trees of Eucalyptus urophylla clone and three of Corymbia citriodora from seeds were used. These trees were felled and their logs removed from its base and at 50 and 100% of the commercial height. The basic density and initial moisture of wood were determined and the air drying monitored during 90 days. The fuel consumption to transport one ton of dry wood and the number of trips required to supply a pulp mill were estimated based on the number of air drying days. Air drying reduced the fuel consumption and the number of trips to supply the pulp mill. The accuracy of models to estimate the wood moisture, fuel consumption and the number of trips based in days of drying was high. Therefore, wood drying is an essential tool to reduce forest transport costs.

RESUMO Vibrações transversais apresentam potencial para avaliação da madeira devido a alta precisão, baixo custo e rapidez, mas sua aplicação em madeira termorretificada ainda é pouco estudada. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as propriedades físicas e mecânicas de madeira termorretificada de Eucalyptus urophylla e Pinus oocarpa e relacionar a análise de ressonância (Bing) com o modulo de elasticidade estático e de ruptura da madeira.Corpos de prova foram confeccionados de três árvores de Eucalyptus urophylla e três de Pinus oocarpa e termorretificados a 150, 175, 200 e 225°C, com taxa de aquecimento de 5°C/min, tempo de residência de quatro horas com pressão atmosférica e presença de ar. A termorretificação reduziu a densidade básica, inchamento volumétrico, inchamento linear, coeficiente de anisotropia, umidade de equilíbrio e resistência mecânica da madeira de ambas as espécies. A análise de ressonância (Bing) apresentou alta relação com o modulo de elasticidade estático e o módulo de ruptura da madeira termorretificada de ambas as espécies e, portanto, esta técnica pode ser utilizada para avaliar as propriedades mecânicas da madeira submetidas a este processo.

ABSTRACT The analysis of the transverse vibrations has the potential to evaluate the wood due to its high precision, low cost and quickly, however there are few studies about its use in heat treated wood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of heat-treated Eucalyptus urophylla and Pinus oocarpa wood and relate the analysis of resonance (Bing) with the modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture of wood. Three Eucalyptus urophylla and Pinus oocarpa trees were used and specimens were prepared and heat-treated at 150, 175, 200 and 225°C with a heating rate of 5°C/ min, four hours of residence time at atmospheric pressure and the presence of air. The heat treatment reduced the volumetric swelling, linear swelling, anisotropy factor, equilibrium moisture content and mechanical strength of the wood in both species. The resonance analysis (Bing) showed a high correlation with the static modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture in heat-treated wood for both species, thus, this technique can be used to evaluate the mechanical properties during this process.

RESUMO Árvores de eucalipto de rápido crescimento podem ser danificadas por ventos, principalmente 24 meses após o plantio, mas a baixa qualidade das fibras dessa madeira dificulta a produção de polpa celulósica. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a utilização destes materiais para a fabricação de polpa celulósica em misturas com madeira de árvores de sete anos de idade. Polpa celulósica branqueada foi produzida com 100, 95, 85, 75 e 0% de madeira de árvores de dois clones de Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla com sete anos de idade, relacionada com a idade de corte. Madeira de árvores de dois anos de idade, mais susceptíveis a danos por ventos, foi utilizada para completar cada tratamento. Um disco de espessura de 5 cm foi retirado na altura do peito (1,3 m) em cada árvore para a caracterização anatômica e ultra-estrutural. As árvores com sete anos apresentaram maior frequência de vasos, fibras com maior comprimento, fração parede, módulo de elasticidade e dureza e menor ângulo microfibrilar. O refino nas polpas diminuiu a opacidade e o volume específico e aumentou a resistência a passagem do ar e as propriedades mecânicas. A adição de madeira de dois anos de idade na produção de polpa celulósica reduziu a resistência mecânica e opacidade e aumentou a resistência à passagem de ar. A proporção da madeira de dois anos de idade, que pode ser utilizado na produção de polpa celulósica variou com o clone, parâmetro avaliado e intensidade do refino. No entanto, a polpa celulósica produzida com 5% de madeira de dois anos de idade, e 95% de madeira de sete anos de idade, foi semelhante aquela com 100% de madeira de árvores de sete anos de idade. Portanto, cinco por cento de madeira de dois anos de idade pode ser utilizado para a produção de polpa celulósica sem perda de qualidade.

ABSTRACT Wind may damage eucalyptus trees, especially 24 months after planting, which can reduce wood fiber quality and hinder pulp production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of these materials in mixtures with wood from seven-year-old trees to produce pulp. Bleached pulp was produced using 100, 95, 85, 75 and 0% wood from seven-year-old eucalyptus trees, related to cutting age. Wood from two-year-old trees, when trees are most susceptible to damage by wind, completed each treatment. A 5 cm thick disc was taken from breast height (1.3m) on each tree for anatomical and ultrastructural characterization. The seven-year-old wood had lower vessel frequency and fibers with a longer length, higher cell wall fraction, higher modulus of elasticity and hardness, and a lower microfibril angle. Pulp refining decreased the opacity and specific volume, increased air resistance and improved mechanical properties. The addition of two-year-old wood to produce pulp reduced the mechanical properties and opacity, and increased the air resistance of the paper. The proportion of two-year-old wood that can be used in pulp production varied with the clone, parameter, and refining level. However, the pulp produced with 5% wood from two-year-old trees and 95% wood from seven-year-old trees was similar to that with 100% seven-year-old wood. Therefore, 5% two-year-old wood can be used to produce pulp without quality losses.

RESUMO A secagem é uma importante etapa para utilização da madeira e as características anatômicas influenciam neste processo. Desse modo, o objetivo foi avaliar a relação entre a anatomia e a secagem da madeira. Amostras de 2 x 2 x 4 cm de madeira foram retiradas de oito materiais de Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla, a 1,3 metros acima do solo para avaliação da anatomia e secagem em câmara climática durante 15 dias. A perda de umidade foi maior nos primeiros dias de secagem e todos os materiais alcançaram a umidade de equilíbrio com 15 dias de secagem. A fração parede foi o parâmetro que melhor se relacionou com a secagem, sendo que o coeficiente de correlação de Pearson entre este parâmetro e a umidade foi de -0,8986; -0,6580; 0,9216; 0,8743; 0,7131 e 0,8727 para a madeira saturada e após 1; 2,5; 5; 10 e 15 dias de secagem, respectivamente. O diâmetro e a frequência de vaso e a altura e a largura dos raios mostraram baixa relação com a secagem. A anatomia, principalmente a fração parede, influenciou a perda de umidade e por isto, deve ser considerada na elaboração de programas de secagem da madeira.

ABSTRACT Drying is an important step to using wood and anatomical characteristics influence this process. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the relationship between anatomy and wood drying. Samples with 2 x 2 x 4 cm were obtained from eight Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis clones at 1.3 m height to evaluate the anatomy and drying in climate chamber during 15 days. Cell wall fraction was established as the parameter that best correlated with drying, the Pearson correlation coefficient between this parameter and moisture was -0.8986, -0.6580, 0.9216, 0.8743, 0.7131 and 0.8727 for saturated wood, and after 1, 2.5, 5, 10 and 15 days of drying, respectively. The frequency and vessel size, as well as the height and width of the rays showed low relation with wood drying. Wood anatomy, mainly the cell wall fraction, influences moisture losses and should be considered in wood drying programs.

RESUMO A secagem da madeira é necessária para sua utilização e o controle da umidade é fundamental durante este processo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi utilizar redes neurais artificiais para avaliar e monitorar a umidade da madeira durante a secagem. Amostras de 2 x 2 x 4 cm foram retiradas a 1,3 metros acima do solo na parte externa no sentido radial de sete materiais de dois anos e três de sete anos de Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis. Essas amostras foram saturadas e sua secagem avaliada até a umidade de equilíbrio, logo após, foram criadas as redes neurais artificiais. Os materiais com maior umidade inicial atingiram a umidade de equilíbrio mais rápido, devido a maior taxa de secagem. A densidade básica da madeira de todos os materiais foi inversamente proporcional no inicio e diretamente proporcional à umidade no final da secagem. A rede neural artificial baseada na densidade básica e nos dias de secagem apresentou alta precisão para avaliar e monitorar a umidade da madeira. Portanto, as redes neurais artificiais podem ser utilizadas para controle da umidade da madeira durante a secagem.

ABSTRACT Drying of wood is necessary for its use and moisture control is important during this process. The aim of this study was to use artificial neural networks to evaluate and monitor the wood moisture content during drying. Wood samples of 2 × 2 × 4 cm were taken at 1.3 m above the ground, outside of radial direction, from seven 2-year-old materials and three 7-year-old materials. These samples were saturated and drying was evaluated until the equilibrium moisture content, then, the artificial neural networks were created. The materials with higher initial moisture reached equilibrium moisture content faster due to its higher drying rate. The basic density of all wood materials was inversely proportional at the beginning and directly proportional to the moisture at the end of drying. All artificial neural networks used in this work showed high accuracy to estimate the moisture, however, the neural network based on the basic density and drying days was the best. Therefore, artificial neural networks can be used to control the moisture content of wood during drying.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as propriedades físicas e mecânicas de painéis OSB produzidos com adesivos comerciais e tânico deStryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville. Os adesivos comerciais ureia formaldeído (UF), fenol formaldeído (FF) e os taninos daAcacia mearnsi foram obtidos por doação por respectivas empresas produtoras, enquanto que o tanino de barbatimão foi obtido em laboratório. Todos adesivos tiveram as propriedades dos adesivos determinadas. Foram produzidos painéis OSB com os adesivos ureia-formaldeído, fenol-formaldeído, tanino-formaldeído a partir da acácia e do barbatimão. Os painéis foram produzidos com partículas do tipo strand, geradas a partir da madeira de pinus, com teor de adesivo de 8% a uma pressão de 40 kgf.cm-2, um tempo e temperatura de prensagem de 8 min e 160°C, respectivamente. Em todas as propriedades avaliadas, o desempenho dos painéis produzidos com adesivo tânico de barbatimão foi melhor quando comparado com o dos painéis produzidos com o adesivo tânico de acácia. Os painéis produzidos com os adesivos UF, FF e tânico de barbatimão atenderam a todos os prerrequisitos estipulados pela norma de comercialização. Tal fato demonstra grande potencial de utilização dos taninos de barbatimão para produção de painéis OSB.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of OSB (Oriented Strand Board) panels produced with commercial adhesives and tannic adhesive from Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville. The commercial adhesives, urea formaldehyde (UF), phenol formaldehyde (FF) and Acacia mearnsi tannin were obtained by donation by respective manufacturing companies, while the tannins of barbatimao were obtained in the laboratory. The adhesives had the adhesives properties determined. OSB panels were produced, with the adhesives urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde, tannin-formaldehyde from Acacia and Stryphnodendron . The panels were produced with strand particles generated from pine wood with an adhesive content of 8% at a 40 kgf.cm-2 of pressure, a time and pressing temperature of 8 minutes and 160°C, respectively. In all of the properties evaluated, the performance of the panels made with tannic adhesive from barbatimão was better when compared to panels manufactured with the tannic adhesive from acacia. The panels produced with urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde and tannic adhesive of barbatimão met all requirements stipulated by the marketing standard. Fact that shows great use potential for tannin of barbatimão for OSB panels production.

O trabalho teve como objetivo obter modelos estatísticos para a estimativa da umidade de equilíbrio de painéis OSB em função da temperatura e da umidade relativa do ar, assim como também avaliar o efeito de algumas variáveis de produção sobre a umidade de equilíbrio dos painéis. O delineamento experimental se constituiu de seis condições de processamento, três temperaturas do ar e seis umidades relativas do ar. Nas condições de processamento, foram avaliadas três diferentes espessuras das partículas strand (0,4; 0,7 e 1,0 mm), duas densidades aparentes do painel (0,65 e 0,90 g/cm³) e também três níveis de pressão na prensagem dos painéis (40, 60 e 80 kgf/cm²). Para cada tratamento foram produzidos quatro painéis com a madeira de Pinus taeda e 6% de adesivo fenol-formaldeído. Na avaliação do experimento foi considerado um delineamento inteiramente casualizado disposto em esquema fatorial triplo 6 x 3 x 6, ou seja, 6 variáveis de produção (condições de processamento), 3 temperaturas do ar (30, 40 e 50°C) e 6 umidades relativas (40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90%). As médias foram comparadas estatisticamente pelo Teste Scott-Knott em nível de 5% de significância. A modelagem da umidade de equilíbrio dos painéis OSB foi realizada mediante o ajuste de modelos polinomiais múltiplos para cada tratamento. Com base nas medidas de precisão e nos resultados obtidos pode-se concluir que: 1) recomenda-se a utilização do modelo UEQ = β0 + β1UR + β2UR² + β3UR³ + β4Temp + ε para a estimativa indireta da umidade de equilíbrio dos painéis OSB; 2) A temperatura apresenta influência linear na umidade de equilíbrio dos painéis, enquanto que a umidade relativa do ar apresenta comportamento polinomial de terceira ordem, sendo que a umidade relativa do ar influencia de forma mais pronunciada a umidade de equilíbrio dos painéis OSB do que a temperatura ambiente; 3) Quanto ao efeito das variáveis de produção, a pressão de prensagem de 80 kgf/cm² e o aumento da espessura das partículas strand para 1,0 mm de espessura promoveu tendência de reduções nos valores médios de umidade de equilíbrio dos painéis OSB. Já o aumento da densidade do painel promoveu uma tendência de aumento da umidade de equilíbrio dos painéis OSB; e 4) O uso de modelos polinomiais múltiplos permite que sejam produzidas curvas de nível para a obtenção dos valores de umidade de equilíbrio dos painéis OSB em função da umidade relativa e da temperatura do local onde o painel esta exposto, se destacando pela sua praticidade de utilização.

The study aimed to obtain statistical models to estimate the equilibrium moisture content of OSB panels as a function of temperature and relative humidity of air, as well as evaluate the effect of some production variables on the equilibrium moisture content of the panels. The experimental design consisted of six processing conditions, three air temperature and six relative humidity of air. In the processing conditions, were evaluated three different thicknesses of the strand particles (0.4, 0.7 and 1.0 mm), two apparent densities of panels (0.65 and 0.90 g/cm³) and three levels of pressure in the pressing of the panels (40, 60 and 80 kgf/cm²). For each treatment four panels were produced with the wood of Pinus taeda and 6% of phenol formaldehyde adhesive. In the evaluation of the experiment was considered a completely randomized design arranged in a factorial triple 6 x 6 x 3, in order words, six production variables (processing conditions), three air temperatures (30, 40 and 50°C) and 6 relative humidity (40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90%). The means were compared statistically by Scott-Knott test at the 5% level of significance. The modeling the equilibrium moisture content of OSB panels was performed with fit the multiple polynomial models for each treatment. Based on measurements of accuracy and the results can be concluded that: 1) it is recommended to use the model UEQ = β0 + β1UR + β2UR² + β3UR³ + β4Temp + ε for indirect estimation of equilibrium moisture content of OSB panels 2) The temperature shows linear influence on the equilibrium moisture content of the panels, while the relative humidity of air shows behaving of third order polynomial, and the relative humidity of air affects more pronouncedly the equilibrium moisture content of OSB panels than the ambient temperature; 3) In respect of the effect of production variables, the pressing of pressure of 80 kgf/cm² and the increased the thickness of the strand particles to 1.0mm thick promoted trend of reductions in average of the equilibrium moisture content of OSB panels. But the increased density of the panel promoted the trend of increasing of equilibrium moisture content of OSB panels; and 4) The use of multiple polynomial models allows that are produced contours to obtain the values of equilibrium moisture content of OSB as a function of relative humidity and temperature of the place where the panel is exposed, standing out for its convenience of use.

Heat treatment can change wood color without any use of environmentally harmful chemicals, and the efficiency of this process depends on the raw material to be treated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of extractives on the color change of Eucalyptus pellita and Pinus radiata wood during heat treatment. The extractives were extracted in cold water and in dichloromethane as well as totally removed and the wood was treated at 170°C and 200°C for three hours under atmospheric pressure and in presence of air for evaluating the lightness (L*), green-red coordinate (a*), blue-yellow coordinate (b*), color saturation (C) and tonality angle (H) values. Pinus radiata wood was more resistant to discoloration by heat treatment. The removal of total and cold water-soluble extractives before heat treatment changed the L* value of Pinus radiata, a* value of Eucalyptus pellita, and b*, C, and H values of both species. Removal of extractives soluble in dichloromethane did not affect the color of heat treated wood. Thus, understanding the influence of extractives on heat treated wood can allow adapting the raw material to the process for enhancing the applicability of heat treatment for changing wood color.

This work aimed to evaluate the effect of veneer inclusion with different wood species, and also different levels of pressing pressure applied in the moment of the veneer inclusion over physical- mechanical properties of already consolidated OSB (Oriented Strand Board) panels. Treatments were arranged in factorial scheme 4 x 2 (four wood types for veneer inclusion - Pinus oocarpa, Eucalyptus urophylla, Parkia gigantocarpa, Brosimum parinarioides; and two pressing pressures - 1 and 2 MPa) and also a control (without veneer inclusion). Veneer inclusion was made with 180 g.cm-2 phenol formaldehyde adhesive, in a simple glue line, perpendicular to the external layer of panels. The pressing cycle used was 150ºC for 4 minutes under pressure 1 or 2 MPa pressure depending on the pre- established treatment. It was possible to conclude that: 1) Veneer inclusion with pines, eucalypt and amapá promoted significant improvements for physical-mechanical properties of OSB panels, highlighting eucalypt and amapá; 2) There was not a significant effect of the level of pressing pressure over mechanical properties of OSB with veneer inclusion; and 3) Regarding physical properties, the highest pressure level (2 MPa) promoted a negative effect in some properties, while veneer inclusion the pressure of 1 MPa generally promoted significant improvement of all physical properties.

In air drying of Eucalyptus urophylla and Corymbia citriodora logs for the production of charcoal it is necessary to be able to predict when logs have reached the required moisture content of ≤ 35%.This study is aimed to produce models using basic density and diameter to predict the moisture content of Eucalyptus urophylla and Corymbia citriodora logs after 30, 60 and 90 days drying. 1,2 m long logs were taken at three different heights from three C. citriodora trees and three trees each from two E. urophylla clones (VM4 and Mn463). The 27 debarked, end sealed logs were air dried under cover for 90 days during which the change in moisture content was monitored. The relationship between density and drying was analyzed by Pearson’s correlation coefficient and the models for predicting the moisture content based on the basic density and diameter were produced. The density and the drying showed a high correlation coefficient. The coefficient of determination of the models was above 0,89 with a standard error lower than 6%. The use of the density and diameter to estimate the wood moisture content simplifies the production of the models, which can be used for Eucalyptus and Corymbia genetic materials.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade técnica da utilização de resíduos da poda de erva-mate na produção de painéis aglomerados. Foram produzidos painéis de aglomerados nas seguintes composições: 100% de pinus (T1), 100% de resíduos de erva-mate com casca (T2), 100% de resíduos de erva-mate sem casca (T3), 50% de pinus com 50% de resíduos de erva-mate com casca (T4) e 50% de pinus com 50% de resíduos de erva-mate sem casca (T5). Os painéis foram produzidos com o adesivo ureia-formaldeído a um teor de 8%, com ciclo de prensagem de 8 min, a 170 ºC e 30 kgf.cm-2. Os painéis produzidos com os resíduos de erva-mate apresentaram menor umidade de equilíbrio higroscópico (UEH), assim como menor absorção de água após 24 h de imersão (AA 24 h). Não houve diferença estatística entre os tratamentos quanto às propriedades de compressão, arrancamento de parafusos, dureza Janka e ligação interna. Os painéis produzidos com resíduos de erva-mate, assim como as misturas deles com partículas de pinus, apresentaram valores de módulo de ruptura à flexão estática inferiores aos estipulados pela norma brasileira NBR 14810-2 (ABNT, 2002). Como não atenderam a um dos requisitos mínimos, painéis produzidos com resíduos de erva-mate não devem ser utilizados em substituição aos painéis de madeira aglomerada.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the technical feasibility of using residues from pruning yerba mate for manufacturing particleboard panels. Particleboard panels were produced containing: 100% pine (T1), 100% residues of yerba mate with bark (T2), 100% residues of yerba mate without bark (T3), 50% pine with 50% residues of yerba mate with bark (T4) and 50% pine with 50% residues of yerba mate without bark (T5). The panels were produced with an urea formaldehyde adhesive 8%, with a pressing cycle of 8 minutes at 170° C and 30 kgf.cm-2. The panels produced with residues of yerba mate showed less hygroscopic equilibrium moisture (HEM) and lower water absorption after 24 of immersion (AA 24 h). There was no statistical difference among the treatments as for the properties of compression, screws pullout, Janka hardness and internal bond. The panels produced with residues of yerba mate, as well as mixtures of these with pine particles, showed values of modulus of rupture in static bending lower than stipulated by the Brazilian standard NBR 14810-2 (ABNT, 2002). Since they did meet one of the basic requirements, panels produced with residues of yerba mate should not be used to substitute wood particleboard panels.
