Abstract Over the last decades, regional climate changes, erosion, and heightened agricultural runoffs have increased nutrient and particle input in rivers, unbalancing the biogeochemical cycle of this suspended material along estuaries. In this context, particle fluxes in the euphotic zone, a very productive layer and important to maintain the food chain and estuarine preservation, require better understanding. This study aims to evaluate particle sedimentation fluxes in the photic zone of the Cananéia-Iguape Estuarine-Lagoon Complex (CIELC), considering sectors under different salinities and trophic statuses. A cylindrical sediment trap was installed at the base of the photic layer to measure particle fluxes and photopigments. Meanwhile, water samples were taken to measure temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients. Valo Grande (a freshwater domain) showed high nutrient concentrations, in which high fluxes of phaeopigments and chlorophyll-b highlighted the contribution of vegetable detritus to particle sinking. In the Batatais mangrove creek, the high fluxes of organic particles (675.32 mg m-2 d-1) and chlorophyll-a (98.40 mg m-2 d-1) evinced a high contribution of microplankton to carbon sinking. During the winter of 2018, flocculation processes were evinced in the flood tide of the Cananéia Bay as an important driver of sedimentation rates, with considerable fluxes of inorganic particles (1161.20 mg m-2 d-1) and chlorophyll-a (83.27 mg m-2 d-1). In the summer of 2019, we observed a lower flux in total particles (451.24 mg m-2 d-1) in a period of haline stratification. In the Ararapira Channel, the lowest organic particle fluxes (<100 mg m-2 d-1) were associated with ultra-oligotrophic conditions, indicating a low influence of microplankton on sinking particles. These findings suggest that freshwater input, tidal variation, and trophic status are relevant controls of sinking particles in different CIELC sectors.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

OBJECTIVES: To prospectively evaluate demographic, anthropometric and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in pediatric patients with laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) METHODS: This was a longitudinal observational study of surviving pediatric post-COVID-19 patients (n=53) and pediatric subjects without laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 included as controls (n=52) was performed. RESULTS: The median duration between COVID-19 diagnosis (n=53) and follow-up was 4.4 months (0.8-10.7). Twenty-three of 53 (43%) patients reported at least one persistent symptom at the longitudinal follow-up visit and 12/53 (23%) had long COVID-19, with at least one symptom lasting for >12 weeks. The most frequently reported symptoms at the longitudinal follow-up visit were headache (19%), severe recurrent headache (9%), tiredness (9%), dyspnea (8%), and concentration difficulty (4%). At the longitudinal follow-up visit, the frequencies of anemia (11% versus 0%, p=0.030), lymphopenia (42% versus 18%, p=0.020), C-reactive protein level of >30 mg/L (35% versus 0%, p=0.0001), and D-dimer level of >1000 ng/mL (43% versus 6%, p=0.0004) significantly reduced compared with baseline values. Chest X-ray abnormalities (11% versus 2%, p=0.178) and cardiac alterations on echocardiogram (33% versus 22%, p=0.462) were similar at both visits. Comparison of characteristic data between patients with COVID-19 at the longitudinal follow-up visit and controls showed similar age (p=0.962), proportion of male sex (p=0.907), ethnicity (p=0.566), family minimum monthly wage (p=0.664), body mass index (p=0.601), and pediatric pre-existing chronic conditions (p=1.000). The Pediatric Quality of Live Inventory 4.0 scores, median physical score (69 [0-100] versus 81 [34-100], p=0.012), and school score (60 [15-100] versus 70 [15-95], p=0.028) were significantly lower in pediatric patients with COVID-19 at the longitudinal follow-up visit than in controls. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric patients with COVID-19 showed a longitudinal impact on HRQoL parameters, particularly in physical/school domains, reinforcing the need for a prospective multidisciplinary approach for these patients. These data highlight the importance of closer monitoring of children and adolescents by the clinical team after COVID-19.

This study aimed to evaluate the response of radish to potassium fertilization and different nitrogen sources. The experimental design was a randomized block with treatments arranged in a factorial 5 x 2 (five doses of potassium, and two sources of nitrogen) with four replications. Potassium doses were 0, 40, 80, 120, and 160 kg ha-1 of K2O, and sources of nitrogen were ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2 SO4) and urea (CO(NH2)2). 35 days after sowing the following variables were evaluated: root diameter, fresh root mass, root dry mass, leaf fresh mass, and leaf dry mass, leaf nitrogen content, number of marketable and non-marketable roots and crop productivity. Potassium application, regardless of the nitrogen supply, influenced radish performance and the dose of 103 kg ha-1 K2O promoted maximum productivity, under our experimental conditions. We conclude that, even in high soil potassium content, potassium fertilization should be recommended to obtain higher radish yield.

Abstract: The stable fly Stomoxys calcitrans (Linnaeus, 1758) has been described as a potential spreader of infectious agents to cattle herds. Among the agents transmitted by this fly, Escherichia coli has attracted attention due to its potential to cause gastrointestinal disorders as well as environmental mastitis in dairy cows. Therefore, the aim of this study was to isolate and to assess the genetic diversity and the clonal relatedness among E. coli isolates from the milk of dairy mastitis and from stable flies anatomical sites by the Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA (RAPD-PCR) technique. The molecular typing revealed a high degree of genetic polymorphism suggesting that these microorganisms have a non-clonal origin. Identical electrophoretic profiles were observed between E. coli isolates from different flies, different mammary quarters of the same cow and from cows on a single farm. These results reveal the circulation of the same bacterial lineages and suggest the role of the stable fly in bacterial dispersion. Considering the high pathogenic potential of this bacterial species, our findings alert to a more effective health surveillance.

The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, has a great importance in medical and veterinary health due to its feeding and reproductive habits, which can disseminate some pathogenic agents among hosts even at long distances. This study aimed to describe, for the first time in Brazil, the bacterial microbiota in segments of the stable fly. Bacterial species were isolated from three different segments (cuticle, mouth parts and abdominal alimentary tract) of the stable fly. Twenty dairy farms were visited in four municipalities: Barra Mansa, Quatis, Resende and Rio Claro in the State of Rio de Janeiro in order to collect 20 flies in each site. Dissection of the flies and procedures of isolation and identification of bacterial species were performed. A total of 161 colonies of 33 distinct species were isolated, such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and S. intermedius. Stomoxys calcitrans may harbor bacterial agents on their cuticle, mouth parts and abdominal alimentary tract and these bacteria may be pathogenic to their hosts.
