ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Current research supports the fact that prophylactic ankle taping (AT) is effective in preventing ankle injuries in amateur and elite sports athletes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of AT on balance, knee valgus during drop jump and single-leg countermovement jump (SL-CMJ) landings, and ankle range of motion (ROM) restriction in healthy participants. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted at the Universidad Europea de Madrid, Madrid, Spain. METHODS: Participants: Thirty-nine healthy individuals participated in this study and performed the movements under two conditions (with and without tape). Outcome measurements: ankle ROM, balance, SL-CMJ height, flight time, ground time, and knee valgus. Before any intervention, a random process was developed with a 1:1 allocation ratio, and the participants were assigned to groups A (tape-no tape) and B (no tape-tape). RESULTS: Significant differences between tape and no-tape moments were observed for drop jump knee valgus flexion (P = 0.007), with an increase in knee valgus in participants with ankle taping. Similarly, the Y-balance testshowed a significant decrease in all variables (P = 0.001 and), ankle dorsiflexion (P = 0.001) in participants with ankle taping. CONCLUSIONS: AT is effective for immediate ankle ROM restriction. However, an increase in knee valgus during drop jump task and a decrease in lower limb balance were observed during drop jump task. Based on these results, it can be concluded that AT application in healthy individuals should not be recommended as it results in increase in injury risk factors.

Resumen Antecedentes: La dehiscencia de la anastomosis colorrectal (DA) es la complicación más temida de la cirugía del cáncer de recto (1-19%), pues incrementa la morbimortalidad y empeora los resultados oncológicos en términos de recidiva local y supervivencia. La publicación del índice REAL-score permite predecir el riesgo de DA y comparar los resultados esperados con los obtenidos. Método: Estudio observacional, descriptivo, longitudinal y retrospectivo, de pacientes intervenidos de cáncer de recto en el Hospital Universitario Miguel Servet, en Zaragoza, España, en 2019. Análisis estadístico de variables resultado de morbimortalidad y del índice REAL-score mediante curvas ROC. Resultados: De 80 pacientes intervenidos de cáncer de recto, se realizó anastomosis colorrectal en 52 e ileostomía temporal en 11 (21.2%). La morbilidad fue alta (38.4%), pero grave solo en el 7.7% (Clavien-Dindo IIIb), sin ningún fallecimiento. Hubo cuatro dehiscencias: una de tipo B y tres de tipo C. Se observa una relación directa entre alto riesgo de DA y la práctica de estoma temporal cuando el punto de corte del REAL-score supera el 14.74%. Conclusiones: El REAL-score puede ayudar en la toma de decisiones en la cirugía del cáncer de recto. Por encima de un punto de corte, el riesgo de DA implicaría ileostomía selectiva.

Abstract Background: Colorectal anastomosis leak (AL) is the most feared complication of rectal cancer surgery (1-19%) as it increases morbidity and mortality and worsens oncological outcomes in terms of local recurrence and survival. The publication of the REAL-score index makes it possible to predict the risk of AL and compare the expected results with those obtained. Method: Observational, descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective study of patients operated on for rectal cancer at the Miguel Servet University Hospital, in Zaragoza, Spain, in 2019. Statistical analysis of morbidity and mortality outcome variables and the REAL-score index using ROC curves. Results: Of 80 patients operated on for rectal cancer, colorectal anastomosis was performed in 52 and temporary ileostomy in 11 (21.2%). Morbidity was high (38.4%), but severe only in 7.7% (Clavien-Dindo IIIb), with no deaths. There were four dehiscences: one type B and three type C. A direct relationship between high risk of AL and the practice of temporary stoma is observed when the cut-off point of the REAL-score exceeds 14.74%. Conclusions: REAL-score can help in decision-making in rectal cancer surgery. Above a cut-off point, the risk of AL would imply a selective ileostomy.

Resumen: Introducción: paraganglioma es el tumor que se desarrolla a partir de la cresta neural con origen en las células cromafines, se pueden localizar en todo el cuerpo. Son más comunes en cabeza y cuello a nivel del cuerpo carotídeo, a medida que aumentan de tamaño rodean pero no obstruyen las arterias. Con escasa frecuencia presentan transformación maligna sugiriendo resección quirúrgica. Objetivo: valorar la utilidad del manejo por parte de radiología intervencionista al realizar embolización selectiva de paragangliomas del cuerpo carotídeo previa a exéresis quirúrgica, evaluando reducción del tiempo quirúrgico y volumen de sangrado transoperatorio. Material y métodos: estudio retrospectivo, observacional, longitudinal y comparativo en el que se incluyeron 29 pacientes (23 mujeres y seis hombres) con diagnóstico de paraganglioma del cuerpo carotídeo mediante estudios radiológicos (tomografía y ultrasonido Doppler), dividiendo los pacientes muestra en dos grupos para su análisis comparativo. Grupo A: con embolización previa (n = 14) y grupo B: sin embolización previa (n = 15). Resultados: en pacientes del grupo A, se realizó una sesión única de embolización selectiva del paraganglioma. En el grupo A el promedio de sangrado y tiempo quirúrgico fue de 60 mL y 1.4 horas, respectivamente. En el grupo B el promedio de sangrado y tiempo quirúrgico fue de 318 mL y 3 horas, respectivamente. Se aplicó prueba U de Mann-Whitney para comparar las diferencias, obteniendo un valor estadísticamente significativo de p < 0.001. Conclusiones: la embolización transarterial de tumores hipervasculares presenta una ventaja importante al disminuir el tiempo quirúrgico promedio y el sangrado transoperatorio de forma significativa.

Abstract: Introduction: paraganglioma is the tumor that develops from the neural crest originating from chromaffin cells, it can be located throughout the body. They are more common in the head and neck at the level of the carotid body, as they increase in size surrounding but not obstructing the arteries. Infrequently they present malignant transformation suggesting surgical resection. Objective: to assess the usefulness of management by interventional radiology when performing selective embolization of paragangliomas of the carotid body prior to surgical excision, evaluating the reduction in surgical time and the volume of transoperative bleeding. Material and methods: a retrospective, observational, longitudinal, and comparative study was carried out, including 29 patients (23 women and 6 men) with a confirmed diagnosis of carotid body paraganglioma by radiological studies (tomography with angiography and Doppler ultrasound) dividing the patients sampled into two groups for comparative analysis. Group A: with previous embolization (n = 14), group B: without previous embolization (n = 15). Results: in group a patients, a single session of selective embolization of the paraganglioma was performed. The average bleeding and surgical time in group A were 60 mL and 1.4 hours, respectively. The average bleeding and surgical time in group B were 318 mL and 3 hours, respectively. A Mann-Whitney U test was performed to compare the differences, obtaining a statistically significant value of p < 0.001. Conclusions: transarterial embolization of hypervascular tumors has an essential advantage by significantly reducing the average surgical time and intraoperative bleeding.

Resumen: La hipoglucemia es el desorden metabólico más frecuente en los recién nacidos; la administración de glucosa gel al 40 % en la mucosa bucal, podría ser tan efectiva en su corrección como la adminis tración de fórmula láctea, no interfiriendo con la lactancia materna. Objetivo: Evaluar la eficacia de la glucosa gel al 40 % comparada con la fórmula láctea, en el tratamiento de la hipoglucemia precoz asintomática en RN con factores de riesgo. Pacientes y Método: Ensayo clínico aleatorizado, de no inferioridad, realizado en un hospital no público. Se incluyeron recién nacidos asistidos en interna ción conjunta con factores de riesgo: pretérminos tardíos, término grandes y pequeños para edad gestacional, e hijos de madres diabéticas. Ante la presencia de hipoglucemia, un grupo recibió glucosa gel al 40 % (A) en la mucosa bucal y otro, leche de fórmula (B). Se consideró fracaso terapéutico a la persistencia o repetición de la hipoglucemia en las primeras 48 h de vida. Resultados: Se registraron 866 RN con factores de riesgo en un período de 36 meses; 278 (32,1 %) presentaron hipoglucemia; se analizan 105 RN en el grupo A y 115 en el grupo B. Se corrigió la hipoglucemia en 75 RN (71 %) en A y 104 RN (90,4 %) en B. Analizando las tendencias obtenidas se decidió suspender el estudio. Conclusiones: La administración de glucosa gel al 40 % no resultó equivalente a la administración de fórmula láctea, en el tratamiento de la hipoglucemia asintomática en RN con factores de riesgo.

Abstract: Hypoglycemia is the most frequent metabolic disorder in newborns; the administration of 40% glucose gel in the oral mucosa could be as effective in its correction as the administration of formula milk, not interfering with breastfeeding. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of 40% glucose gel compared with formula milk in the treatment of early asymptomatic hypoglycemia in newborns with risk factors. Patients and Method: Randomized clinical trial, non-inferiority, conducted in a private hospital. Newborns attended in rooming-in with the following risk factors were included: late preterm, large and small for gestational age at term, and children of diabetic mothers. In the presence of hypoglycemia, one group received 40% glucose gel (A) in the oral mucosa and another group received formula milk (B). Therapeutic failure was considered as persistence or repetition of hypoglycemia in the first 48h of life. Results: 866 NBs with risk factors were registered over 36 month; 278 (32.1 %) presented hypoglycemia; 105 NBs in group A and 115 in group B completed the study. 75 (71 %) NBs in group A and 104 (90,4 %) in group B achieved hypoglycemia correction. After analyzing the trends obtained, it was decided to discontinue the study. Conclusions: The administration of 40% glucose gel was not equivalent to the administration of formula milk in the treatment of early asymptomatic hypoglycemia in newborns with risk factors.

Abstract The improvement of sandy soils by incorporating new stabilizing agents in a physical and/or chemical process has become the subject of many studies in recent decades. In addition, the use of industrial wastes in this process can bring significant benefits to the environment and savings in natural resources. This work aims to evaluate the implications of incorporating porcelain polishing waste (PPW) and hydrated lime on the mechanical properties of an aeolian dune sand from the city of Natal/RN. Tests of unconfined compressive strength and split tensile strength were performed on compacted soil specimens with different contents of PPW (10%, 20% and 30%), hydrated lime (3%, 5% and 7%) and relative densities (25%, 50% and 75%). To evaluate the effects of each factor, the Response Surface Methodology with Central Composite Design was used. The results have shown that all three factors have a positive effect on the response variables. The highest strengths were obtained in regions combining high values of relative density and PPW content and an optimum lime content was found. An inversely proportional correlation and good fit to the experimental data was obtained between the strength values and the porosity/binder index ( η / B i v). The strength gains were attributed to densification of the soil structure and cementation of the particles by the compounds formed in the reaction between lime and PPW. The results also showed an increase in the strength with curing time, indicating a pozzolanic activity of the mixtures.

Abstract Introduction: We intend to present a series of patients with associated multiple and simultaneous unstable spinal fractures (Type B or C). Materials and Methods: A descriptive analysis of patients with high-energy spinal cord injuries and associated multiple unstable and simultaneous spinal fractures from January 2015 to January 2021 was conducted. Patients with type B (ligament injury) and/or type C (subluxation/dislocation) multiple spinal fractures were included. Patients with incomplete medical records, osteoporotic or pathological fractures, or fewer than 3 months of follow-up were excluded. Results: We included 5 patients (1 woman and 4 men) with two simultaneous unstable spinal fractures, including 4 cases (80%) of non-contiguous fractures and 3 (60%) with two simultaneous non-contiguous fracture dislocations (“floating spine”); 2 (40%) cases had a type B fracture associated with a type C fracture. The median age was 35 years. High-energy trauma with associated injuries occurred in all cases. All patients were surgically treated with a conventional posterior approach, reduction, and long arthrodesis. In two patients, neurological recovery was confirmed. Conclusion: A case series of multiple simultaneous unstable spinal fractures (type B or C) caused by high-energy trauma is presented. This is a rare injury association with significant morbidity associated with spinal, systemic, and neurological trauma.

Resumen Introducción: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar a una serie de pacientes con la asociación de múltiples fracturas vertebrales inestables (tipo B o C) simultáneas. Materiales y Métodos: Estudio descriptivo de pacientes con trauma vertebromedular de alta energía y asociación de múltiples fracturas vertebrales inestables simultáneas entre enero de 2015 y enero de 2021. Se incluyó a pacientes con fracturas vertebrales múltiples tipo B (asociación de lesión ligamentaria) o tipo C (evidencia de subluxación/ luxación). Se excluyó a pacientes con registros incompletos de historias clínicas, fracturas por osteoporosis o patológicas y seguimiento <3 meses. Resultados: Se constataron 5 pacientes (1 mujer y 4 hombres) con dos fracturas vertebrales inestables simultáneas, con 4 casos (80%) de fracturas no contiguas y 3 casos (60%) con 2 luxofracturas simultáneas no contiguas (“columna flotante”); 2 (40%) pacientes presentaron la asociación de una fractura tipo B con una tipo C. La mediana de la edad era de 35 años. Todos tenían traumatismos de alta energía con lesiones asociadas. Los pacientes fueron operados por vía posterior convencional, con reducción y artrodesis larga. Se constató la recuperación neurológica en 2 pacientes. Conclusión: Presentamos una serie de casos de múltiples fracturas vertebrales inestables (tipo B o C) y simultáneas por traumatismos de alta energía. Esta asociación de lesiones es poco frecuente y tiene una elevada morbilidad relacionada con el trauma vertebral, sistémico y neurológico.

ABSTRACT. The center of origin and domestication of Piper nigrum L. are in high rainfall regions. But when grown in regions with irregular or insufficient rainfall, irrigation becomes essential. This study evaluated the impact of irrigation levels on the physiological and growth characteristics of black pepper plants, cv. Bragantina. It was carried out from April 2019 to May 2020, using automatic activation irrigation. We used emitters with different flow rates to apply water depths corresponding to 100, 81, 62, and 42% of the crop water requirement. The parameters evaluated comprised main stem length (MSL), stem diameter (SD), number of leaves (NL), leaf area (LA), chlorophyll contents, chlorophyll-a fluorescence, and some photosynthetic parameters. The treatments significantly influenced (p < 0.05, F-test) MSL and NL. Plants submitted to the control treatment showed MSL (65.8%) and NL (123%) greater than those irrigated with the smallest volume (p < 0.05, F-test). However, the treatments had no significant effect on SD. Moreover, chlorophyll b levels decreased by 26% and chlorophyll a/b ratio increased by 22% at 120 and 180 DAT, respectively. Some photosynthetic parameters such as FV/FM, ABS/RC, and DI0/RC were affected by water deficit at 120 DAT. Our results suggest the sensitivity of black peppers to water deficit and contribute to the proper management of this crop.

Abstract Diagnosis is crucial for controlling giardiasis. We determined the prevalence and genetically characterize isolates of Giardia duodenalis of children and dogs from rural communities in northeastern Brazil. G. duodenalis cysts were concentrated by centrifugal flotation/sedimentation. Molecular characterization was carried out using the loci ssu-rRNA, bg, tpi, and gdh. By parasitological techniques, Giardia spp. infection was detected in 72/192 children (37.5%; 95% CI: 30.6%-44.7%) and 24/139 dogs (17.3%; 95% CI: 11.4%-24.6%). By molecular analysis, infection was detected in 60/141 children (42.5%; 95% CI: 34.3%-51.2%) and 26/92 dogs (28.3%; 95% CI: 19.4%-38.6%). The total prevalence of giardiasis was 54.9% in children (106/193; 95% CI: 47.1%-61.6%) and 32.9% in dogs (47/143; 95% CI: 25.2%-41.2%). Zoonotic assemblages A and B of G. duodenalis were detected in children, and assemblage E of G. duodenalis was detected in one child and two dogs. Parallel use of parasitological and molecular techniques proved to be a more effective strategy for detecting giardiasis in children and dogs from endemic areas.

Resumo O diagnóstico é crucial para o controle da giardíase. Foram determinadas as prevalências e as características genéticas isoladas de Giardia duodenalis, em crianças e cães de comunidades rurais do nordeste brasileiro. Os cistos de G. duodenalis foram concentrados por centrífugo-flutuação/sedimentação. A caracterização molecular foi realizada utilizando-se os loci ssu-rRNA, bg, tpi e gdh. Pelas técnicas parasitológicas, a infecção por Giardia spp. foi detectada em 72/192 crianças (37,5%; IC 95%: 30,6%-44,7%) e 24/139 cães (17,3%; IC 95%: 11,4%-24,6%). Molecularmente, a infecção foi detectada em 60/141 crianças (42,5%; IC 95%: 34,3%-51,2%) e 26/92 cães (28,3%; IC 95%: 19,4%-38,6%). A prevalência total de giardíase foi de 54,9% em crianças (106/193; IC 95%: 47,1%-61,6%) e 32,9% em cães (47/143; IC 95%: 25,2%-41,2%). Os assemblages zoonóticos A e B de G. duodenalis foram detectados em crianças, e o assemblage E de G. duodenalis foi detectado nas duas populações. O uso paralelo de técnicas parasitológicas e moleculares mostra-se uma estratégia mais eficaz para detecção de giardíase em crianças e cães de áreas endêmicas.

Abstract Background Cardiovascular complications of COVID-19 are important aspects of the disease’s pathogenesis and prognosis. Evidence on the prognostic role of troponin and myocardial injury in Latin American hospitalized COVID-19 patients is still scarce. Objectives To evaluate myocardial injury as independent predictor of in-hospital mortality and invasive mechanical ventilation support in hospitalized patients, from the Brazilian COVID-19 Registry. Methods This cohort study is a substudy of the Brazilian COVID-19 Registry, conducted in 31 Brazilian hospitals of 17 cities, March-September 2020. Primary outcomes included in-hospital mortality and invasive mechanical ventilation support. Models for the primary outcomes were estimated by Poisson regression with robust variance, with statistical significance of p<0.05. Results Of 2,925 patients (median age of 60 years [48-71], 57.1% men), 27.3% presented myocardial injury. The proportion of patients with comorbidities was higher among patients with cardiac injury (median 2 [1-2] vs. 1 [0-2]). Patients with myocardial injury had higher median levels of brain natriuretic peptide, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, and C-reactive protein than patients without myocardial injury. As independent predictors, C-reactive protein and platelet counts were related to the risk of death, and neutrophils and platelet counts were related to the risk of invasive mechanical ventilation support. Patients with high troponin levels presented a higher risk of death (RR 2.03, 95% CI 1.60-2.58) and invasive mechanical ventilation support (RR 1.87, 95% CI 1.57-2.23), when compared to those with normal troponin levels. Conclusion Cardiac injury was an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation support in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Resumo Fundamento As complicações cardiovasculares da COVID-19 são aspectos importantes da patogênese e do prognóstico da doença. Evidências do papel prognóstico da troponina e da lesão miocárdica em pacientes hospitalizados com COVID-19 na América Latina são ainda escassos. Objetivos Avaliar a lesão miocárdica como preditor independente de mortalidade hospitalar e suporte ventilatório mecânico em pacientes hospitalizados, do registro brasileiro de COVID-19. Métodos Este estudo coorte é um subestudo do registro brasileiro de COVID-19, conduzido em 31 hospitais brasileiros de 17 cidades, de março a setembro de 2020. Os desfechos primários incluíram mortalidade hospitalar e suporte ventilatório mecânico invasivo. Os modelos para os desfechos primários foram estimados por regressão de Poisson com variância robusta, com significância estatística de p<0,05. Resultados Dos 2925 pacientes [idade mediana de 60 anos (48-71), 57,1%], 27,3% apresentaram lesão miocárdica. A proporção de pacientes com comorbidades foi maior nos pacientes com lesão miocárdica [mediana 2 (1-2) vs. 1 (0-20)]. Os pacientes com lesão miocárdica apresentaram maiores valores medianos de peptídeo natriurético cerebral, lactato desidrogenase, creatina fosfoquinase, N-terminal do pró-peptídeo natriurético tipo B e proteína C reativa em comparação a pacientes sem lesão miocárdica. Como fatores independentes, proteína C reativa e contagem de plaquetas foram relacionados com o risco de morte, e neutrófilos e contagem de plaquetas foram relacionados ao risco de suporte ventilatório mecânico invasivo. Os pacientes com níveis elevados de troponina apresentaram um maior risco de morte (RR 2,03, IC95% 1,60-2,58) e suporte ventilatório mecânico (RR 1,87;IC95% 1,57-2,23), em comparação àqueles com níveis de troponina normais. Conclusão Lesão cardíaca foi um preditor independente de mortalidade hospitalar e necessidade de suporte ventilatório mecânico em pacientes hospitalizados com COVID-19.

Abstract Invasive Candida infections threaten human health due to the increasing incidence of resistance to the currently available antifungal agents. Amphotericin B (AMB) is the gold standard therapy to treat these infections. Nevertheless, the use of such substance in the clinic is aggravated by its toxicity. Since AMB binds to membrane sterols, it forms pores on human plasma membranes, mainly in kidney cells, leading to nephrotoxicity. The combination of this drug to a second substance could allow for the use of smaller concentrations of AMB, consequently lowering the probability of adverse effects. This mini-review summarizes information regarding an array of substances that enhance AMB antifungal activity. It may be noticed that several of these compounds target plasma membrane. Interestingly, substances approved for human use also presented combinatory anti-Candida activity with AMB. These data reinforce the potential of associating AMB to another drug as a promising therapeutical alternative to treat Candida infections. Further studies, regarding mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics and toxicity parameters must be conducted to confirm the role of these substances as adjuvant agents in candidiasis therapy.

ABSTRACT The performance of genicular nerve block requires an imaging method to guide the procedure. Radioscopy has the disadvantage of being radiation dependent. Objective: To assess whether the use of adhesive radiopaque grids reduce radiation exposure in these cases. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted with 23 orthopedists in which needles were positioned in a model with and without the use of adhesive radiopaque grids. The number of fluoroscopy shots necessary for proper positioning in three points (superior lateral, superior medial, and inferior medial) were registered. Results: A statistical difference was observed in the three blocking points studied. The number of radioscopies required for these three points were 12.1 ± 2.5 in the group without grid and 5.0 ± 1.8 in the group with grid. The superior medial point presented the greatest numerical difference and the inferior medial point the smallest. Conclusion: The use of adhesive radiopaque grids led to a statistically significant reduction in the number of radioscopies/fluoroscopies required to perform the genicular block. The use of this device increases the safety of the physician and patient by reducing radiation exposure in this procedure. Level of Evidence III, Level of Evidence II, Random Clinical Trial.

RESUMO Para a realização do bloqueio de nervos geniculares é necessário guiar o procedimento por um método de imagem. A radioscopia possui a desvantagem de ser dependente de radiação. Objetivo: Avaliar se o uso de máscaras localizadoras diminui a exposição à radiação nesses casos. Métodos: Estudo transversal realizado com 23 ortopedistas, que realizaram o posicionamento de agulhas em um modelo com e sem o uso da máscara localizadora. Foi registrado o número de escopias necessárias para o posicionamento adequado em três pontos: superior lateral, superior medial e inferior medial. Resultados: Foi observada diferença estatística nos três pontos de bloqueio analisados. O número de radioscopias necessárias nos três pontos somados foi de 12,1 ± 2,5, no grupo sem máscara, e 5,0 ± 1,8, no grupo com máscara. O ponto superior medial foi o que apresentou a maior diferença numérica, e o inferior medial a menor. Conclusão: O uso da máscara localizadora reduziu de forma estatisticamente significativa o número de escopias necessárias para a realização do bloqueio genicular. O uso desse dispositivo aumenta a segurança do médico e do paciente por diminuir a exposição à radioscopia nesse procediment. Nível de Evidência III, Ensaio clínico randomizado aberto - Nível de recomendação B - nível de evidência 2b.

ABSTRACT The knowledge of the adequate period for the beginning of weed management in lettuce crop can increase the efficiency of production, reducing the costs with management. The aim of this study was to determine the pre-interference period (PIP), the critical time for weed removal (CTWR) and the critical period of weed control (CPWC) in three lettuce cultivars, Elisa, Lucy Brown and Solaris. Coexistence and the absence of weeds were evaluated for each cultivar. The design was in randomized blocks with seven treatments (0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 days after transplanting - DAT) of coexistence and the same seven periods of weed absence with four replicates in each experiment. The highest infestation densities were with the species Oxalis latifolia, Coronopus didymus and Amaranthus hybridus. The leaf area and number of leaves per plant were reduced by up to 50% and 66%, respectively, in relation to the longest period of coexistence with weeds and yield reduced by 48% (Elisa), 40% (Lucy Brown) and 33% (Solaris). The cultivar Solaris showed greater tolerance to weed interference. Based on yield, PIP was 1, 3 and 3 DAT and CTWR was 37, 37 and 35 DAT, and CPWC was 2 to 37, 3 to 37 and 3 to 35 for the cultivars Elisa, Lucy Brown and Solaris, respectively.

RESUMO O conhecimento do período adequado para início do manejo de plantas daninhas na cultura da alface pode aumentar a eficiência de produção reduzindo os custos com o manejo. Objetivou-se neste trabalho determinar o período anterior à interferência (PAI), o período total de prevenção da interferência (PTPI) e o período crítico de prevenção da interferência (PCPI) em três cultivares de alface, Elisa, Lucy Brown e Solaris. Foram avaliadas a convivência e a ausência de plantas daninhas para cada cultivar. O delineamento foi em blocos casualizados com sete tratamentos [0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 e 42 dias após transplantio (DAT)] de convivência e os mesmos sete períodos de ausência de plantas daninhas com quatro repetições em cada experimento. As maiores densidades de infestação foram com as espécies Oxalis latifolia, Coronopus didymus e Amaranthus hybridus. A área foliar e número de folhas por planta foram reduzidas em até 50% e 66% respectivamente em função do maior período de convivência com as plantas daninhas e produtividade foi reduzida em 48% (Elisa), 40% (Lucy Brown) e 33% (Solaris). A cultivar Solaris apresentou maior tolerância à interferência das plantas daninhas. Com base nos dados de produtividade o PAI foi de 1, 3 e 3 DAT e o PTPI foi de 37, 37 e 35 DAT, sendo o PCPI de 2 a 37, 3 a 37 e 3 a 35 para as cultivares Elisa, Lucy Brown e Solaris, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT Objective: to assess the effects of auriculotherapy on anxiety and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) serum levels in adults assisted in Primary Health Care. Methods: a pre-experimental pilot clinical trial. Information was obtained from 19 patients using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and analysis of BDNF, NSE and S100B serum levels. Results: the pre-intervention anxiety score in the IDATE-Trait was 52.11±6.691 (CV 12.84%) and the assessment after auriculotherapy was significantly lower (43.72±8.141; CV 18.62%; P=0.0007). S100B levels were significantly reduced after auriculotherapy (from 64.03±72.18 to 54.03±68.53 pg/mL; CV 126.8%; P=0.0023). Conclusion: auriculotherapy effectively reduced anxiety levels. It proved to be safe and easy to apply, allowing nurses to perform this technique autonomously. A reduction of S100B was also evidenced, demonstrating possible prevention of neuronal damage.

RESUMEN Objetivo: evaluar los efectos de la auriculoterapia sobre la ansiedad y los niveles séricos de factor neurotrófico derivado de cerebro (BDNF), enolasa-específica de neurona (NSE) y proteína fijadora de calcio S100B (S100B) en adultos atendidos en Atención Primaria de Salud. Métodos: ensayo clínico piloto preexperimental. Se obtuvo información de 19 pacientes mediante el Inventario de Ansiedad Estado-Rasgo (STAI) y análisis de niveles séricos de BDNF, NSE y S100B. Resultados: la puntuación de ansiedad preintervención en el IDATE-Rasgo fue de 52,11±6,691 (CV 12,84%) y la valoración tras la auriculoterapia fue significativamente menor (43,72±8,141; CV 18,62%; P=0,0007). Los niveles de S100B se redujeron significativamente después de la auriculoterapia (de 64,03±72,18 a 54,03±68,53 pg/mL; CV 126,8%; P=0,0023). Conclusión: la auriculoterapia redujo efectivamente los niveles de ansiedad. Demostró ser seguro y fácil de aplicar, lo que permitió a las enfermeras realizar esta técnica de forma autónoma. También se evidenció una reducción de S100B, lo que demuestra una posible prevención del daño neuronal.

As informações foram obtidas de 19 pacientes por meio do Inventário de Ansiedade Traço-Estado (IDATE) e da análise dos níveis séricos de BDNF, NSE e S100B. Resultados: o escore de ansiedade pré-intervenção no IDATE-Traço foi de 52,11±6,691 (CV 12,84%) e a avaliação após a auriculoterapia foi significativamente menor (43,72±8,141; CV 18,62%; P=0,0007). Os níveis de S100B foram significativamente reduzidos após auriculoterapia (de 64,03±72,18 para 54,03±68,53 pg/mL; CV 126,8%; P=0,0023). Conclusão: a auriculoterapia reduziu efetivamente os níveis de ansiedade. Mostrou-se segura e de fácil aplicação, possibilitando ao enfermeiro realizar esta técnica com autonomia. Uma redução de S100B também foi evidenciada, demonstrando possível prevenção de danos neuronais.

Abstract The antimicrobial activity of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) has been confirmed to fight a broad spectrum of microorganisms, through antimicrobial effects that are amplified when these particles are irradiated with light of the proper wavelength. This is the first study to use phytoconjugated Zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs containing traces of active biomolecules derived from Emblica officinalis (E. officinalis) plant extract in antimicrobial photocatalysis (PCT) during non-surgical periodontal therapy. Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the effects of repeated PCT application in the treatment of periodontitis, using a gel containing bio-hydrothermally synthesized ZnO NPs and visible light as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP). Methodology In total, 16 systemically healthy volunteers with stage 3 grade B generalized periodontitis were recruited for this prospective double blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial. After receiving SRP, the subjects received the following interventions in a split-mouth design at baseline, 1 week and 1 month: Group 1 – Placebo gel + Sham PCT; Group 2 – Nano ZnO gel + Sham PCT; Group 3 – Placebo gel + PCT; and Group 4 – Nano ZnO gel + PCT. The site-specific profile of Porphyromonas gingivalis in the subgingival plaque and clinical parameters (Plaque Index, Gingival Index, Gingival Bleeding Index, Probing pocket Depth and Clinical Attachment Level) were assessed at baseline, 1 month and 3 months. Results All interventions tested caused participants’ clinical and microbiological parameters to generally improve after 3 months. Subjects who received the Nano ZnO gel + PCT combination showed a sustained and progressive improvement in their treatment outcomes, a result that presented statistically significant differences from the outcomes obtained through the remaining interventions, at all time points during the study period. Conclusions The repeated application of PCT using bio-hydrothermally synthesized ZnO NPs can effectively complement SRP in the non-surgical treatment of Periodontitis.

Resumo Foram avaliados quatro tratamentos de compostagem aeróbica com diferentes matérias primas (BA: bagaço de azeitona, ES: estrume, CA: casca de amendôa) durante 176 d: pilha A com 44% BA, 25% ES, 25% CA e revolvimento; pilha B com 44% BA, 11% ES, 44% CA e revolvimento; pilha C com 25% BA, 50% ES, 25% CA e revolvimento; pilha D com 44% BA, 11% ES, 44% CA e sem revolvimento, de modo a testar os três fatores limitantes do BA: alta relação C/N, elevada humidade e teor de polifenóis. As variáveis analisadas nas pilhas, quinzenalmente, foram (n=160): densidade, humidade, fração grosseira, pH, condutividade elétrica (CE), matéria orgânica (MO), cinzas e cor; a análise elementar CHNO foi determinada por análise química elementar e a fitotoxicidade conforme o índice de Munoo-Liisa (MLV). Os resultados do diagrama de Van Krevelen (H/C vs O/C) mostram uma ligeira deshidrogenação nos primeiros 98 d, seguida por uma degradação seletiva de hidratos de carbono e um aumento da aromatização após 120 d. A análise de componentes principais (ACP) mostrou que a maior variabilidade é explicada pela qualidade da MO (83%), onde o teor de C (C/N alta) diminui conforme aumenta a disponibilidade de N e o pH. Por outro lado, verifico-se que a MLV é explicada (52%) pela alifaticidade dos constituintes orgânicos no composto (H/C alta).

Abstract Four treatments of aerobic composting with different raw materials (BA: olive pomace, ES: manure, CA: almond husk) were evaluated during 176 days: pile A with 44%BA, 25%ES, 25%CA and turning; pile B with 44%BA, 11%ES, 44%CA and turning; C pile with 25%BA, 50% ES, 25%CA and turning; D pile with 44%BA, 11%ES, 44%CA and without turning over, in order to test the three limiting factors of BA: high C/N ratio, humidity and content of polyphenols. The routine variables analyzed bi-weekly were (n=160): density, humidity, coarse fraction, pH, electric conductivity (EC), organic matter (OM), ash and color; CHNO was determined by chemical elemental analysis and the phytotoxicity according to the Munoo-Liisa index (MLV). Van Krevelen diagram´s results (H/C vs O/C) show a slight dehydrogenation in the first 98 d, followed by a selective degradation of carbohydrates and an increase in the aromatization of the compounds after 120d. The principal component analises (PCA) showed that the greatest variability is explained by the OM quality axis (83%), where the C content (high C/N) decreases as the N availability and pH increases, on the other hand, the MLV was explained (52 %) by the aliphaticity of the organic constituents in the compost (high H/C).
