ABSTRACT The management of Conyza spp. is becoming increasingly challenging in soybean, especially post-emergence; therefore, it must be linked to the effectiveness of control with selectivity. This study aimed to evaluate the phytotoxic effects on soybean and the control of Conyza spp. at an advanced phenological stage through different post-emergence herbicides registered for soybean. The experimental design was randomized blocks with plots divided in time with 4 replications, consisting of 14 treatments: cloransulam at three different doses (30, 35, and 40 g a.i. ha-1); fomesafen (250 g a.i. ha-1); imazethapyr (100 g a.i. ha-1); chlorimuron in three different doses (15, 18, and 20 g a.i. ha-1); flumetsulam (108 g a.i. ha-1); lactofen (180 g a.i. ha-1); bentazon (720 g a.i. ha-1); and flumiclorac (60 g a.i. ha-1). All were associated with glyphosate (1080 g a.i. ha-1), in addition to two controls, one weeded and the other without. Visual assessments of phytotoxicity in the soybean crop and weed control were performed at 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days after treatment (DAT). Bentazon stood out among all treatments, showing adequate selectivity in soybean, in addition to effective weed control at 14 DAT. No dose of cloransulam or chlorimuron herbicide was effective in controlling Conyza spp. The phenological stage of Conyza spp. and water availability impacted weed control of post-emergence herbicides and selectivity in soybean.

RESUMO O manejo de Conyza spp., se torna cada vez mais desafiador em soja, principalmente na pós-emergência, logo, deve-se atrelar eficácia de controle com seletividade. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos fitotóxicos na cultura da soja e o controle de Conyza spp. em estágio fenológico avançado, através de diferentes herbicidas registrados em pós-emergência para a cultura da soja. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso com parcelas subdividadas no tempo com 4 repetições, sendo composto por 14 tratamentos: cloransulam em três diferentes doses (30, 35 e 40 g.i.a.ha-1); fomesafen (250 g i.a. ha-1); imazethapyr (100 g i.a. ha-1); chlorimuron em três diferentes doses (15,18 e 20 g i.a. ha-1);flumetsulam (108 g i.a. ha-1); lactofen (180 g i.a. ha-1); bentazon (720 g i.a. ha-1) e flumiclorac (60 i.a. ha-1). Todos foram associados com o glifosato (1080 g i.a. ha-1), além de duas testemunhas,uma capinada e outra sem. Foram realizadas avaliações visuais de fitotoxicidade na cultura da soja e de controle na planta daninha nos 7, 14, 21, 28 e 35 dias após tratamento (DAT). O bentazon se destacou entre todos os tratamentos, apresentando adequada seletividade na soja, além de efetivo controle de plantas daninhas aos 14 DAT. Nenhuma dose dos herbicidas cloransulam e chlorimuron foram eficazes no controle de Conyza spp. O estádio fenológico de Conyza spp. e a disponibilidade hídrica impacta o controle de plantas daninhas em herbicidas de pós-emergência e seletividade em soja.

ABSTRACT Coffee plantations installed at high altitudes and near forested areas have been highly infested with Anredera cordifolia. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of different pre- and post-emergence herbicide treatments on A. cordifolia after mechanical mowing. A field experiment was carried out in a coffee plantation with natural infestation of A. cordifolia in a completely randomized design with a split-plot scheme and four replicates, in which the main plot an herbicides application and the subplot was the days after the initial application (DAI). The treatments were as follows: saflufenacil + glyphosate (70 + 960 g a.i. ha-1); chlorimuron + glyphosate (80 + 960 g a.i. ha-1); metsulfuron + glyphosate (6 + 960 g a.i. ha-1); flumioxazin + glyphosate (25 + 960 g a.i. ha-1), and glyphosate (960 g a.i. ha-1); with sequential application of glyphosate (960 g a.i. ha-1); glyphosate + indaziflam (960 + 75 g a.i. ha-1); indaziflam (75 g a.i. ha-1); and a control without herbicide application. Mechanical control, followed by the application of the treatments flumioxazin + glyphosate and metsulfuron + glyphosate in the first application and sequential application of indaziflam, proved to be effective. Control of this weed should be based on the removal of its plant residues from the field to reduce the regrowth and germination of aerial tubers.

RESUMO Plantações de café instaladas em altitudes elevadas e próximas a áreas florestais têm sido altamente infestadas por Anredera cordifolia. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficácia de diferentes tratamentos herbicidas pré e pós-emergência sobre A. cordifolia após roçada mecânica. Para tanto, foi conduzido um experimento de campo em uma lavoura de café com infestação natural de A. cordifolia em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado com esquema de parcelas subdivididas com quatro repetições, sendo a parcela principal os tratamentos com aplicação de herbicida e a subparcela os dias após a aplicação inicial (DAI). Os tratamentos foram compostos por: saflufenacil + glifosato (70 + 960 g i. a. ha-1); clorimuron + glifosato (80 + 960 g i. a. ha-1); metsulfuron + glifosato (6 + 960 g i. a. ha-1); flumioxazin + glyphosate (25 + 960 g i. a. ha-1) e glifosato (960 g i. a. ha-1); com uma aplicação sequencial de: glifosato (960 g i. a. ha-1); (6) glifosato + indaziflam (960 g i. a. ha-1); e indaziflam (75 g i. a. ha-1), além de uma testemunha sem aplicação de herbicida. O manejo integrado é fundamental para o controle adequado de A. cordifolia, devido ao seu desenvolvimento vegetativo agressivo. O controle mecânico, seguido da aplicação dos tratamentos flumioxazin + glyphosate e metsulfuron + glyphosate na primeira aplicação e indaziflam sequencial mostrou-se eficaz. O controle dessa planta daninha deve ser baseado na remoção de seus resíduos vegetais do campo para reduzir a rebrota e a germinação de tubérculos aéreos.

ABSTRACT The ideal ventral hernia surgical repair is still in discussion1. The defect closure with a mesh-based repair is the base of surgical repair, in open or minimally invasive techniques2. The open methods lead to a higher surgical site infections incidence, meanwhile, the laparoscopic IPOM (intraperitoneal onlay mesh) increases the risk of intestinal lesions, adhesions, and bowel obstruction, in addition to requiring double mesh and fixation products which increase its costs and could worsen the post-operative pain3-5. The eTEP (extended/enhanced view totally intraperitoneal) technique has also arisen as a good option for this hernia repair. To avoid the disadvantages found in classic open and laparoscopic techniques, the MILOS (Endoscopically Assisted Mini or Less Open Sublay Repair) concept, created by W. Reinpold et al. in 2009, 3 years after eTEP conceptualization, allows the usage of bigger meshes through a small skin incision and laparoscopic retro-rectus space dissection, as the 2016 modification, avoiding an intraperitoneal mesh placement6,7. This new technique has been called E-MILOS (Endoscopic Mini or Less Open Sublay Repair)8. RESUMO O tratamento cirúrgico ideal para correção das hérnias ventrais ainda é motivo de grande discussão1. O fechamento do defeito associado a utilização de telas para reforço da parede abdominal são passos fundamentais da terapia cirúrgica, podendo ser realizados tanto pela via aberta quanto pelas técnicas minimamente invasivas2. A via aberta apresenta maiores taxas de infecção de sítio cirúrgico, enquanto o reparo laparoscópico IPOM (intraperitoneal onlay mesh) acarreta um risco aumentado de lesões intestinais, aderências e obstruções intestinais, além de requerer uso de telas de dupla face e dispositivos de fixação que encarecem o procedimento e não raro aumentam a dor no pós-operatório3-5. A técnica eTEP (extended/enhanced view totally extraperitoneal), tem ganhado importância, mostrando-se uma boa opção para a correção das hérnias ventrais também2. A fim de se evitar as desvantagens das técnicas abertas e laparoscópicas “clássicas” o conceito MILOS (Endoscopically Assisted Mini or Less Open Sublay Repair), desenvolvido por W. Reinpold et al. em 2009, 3 anos antes do advento do eTEP, possibilita ao cirurgião o uso de telas de grandes dimensões no plano retromuscular através de uma pequena incisão na pele e dissecção laparoscópica deste espaço, conforme modificação realizada em 2016, evitando a colocação de uma tela no espaço intraperitoneal6-7. Esta nova técnica passou a se chamar EMILOS (Endoscopic Mini or Less Open Sublay Repair)8 Este artigo tem como objetivo relatar nossa experiência inicial no emprego da técnica E-MILOS no Brasil, na Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo.

ABSTRACT Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) has been attracting great interest due to the beauty of the colors of flowers, the firmness of stems, and postharvest durability. However, knowledge of lisianthus irrigation and fertigation has generally been based on recommendations from other countries. This study aimed to establish parameters for the rational management of lisianthus fertigation under a protected environment by determining the best lower limit of soil moisture, associated with the determination of the optimal potassium concentration to be maintained in the soil solution. The treatments consisted of five soil moisture limits for the start of irrigation and maintenance of five potassium concentrations in the soil solution, with four replications. Plots of 0.7 by 0.5 m were arranged in a completely randomized block design in a factorial scheme. The soil solution was monitored by measuring moisture as well as potassium (K+) concentrations using a TDR100 reflectometer and solution extractors, respectively, during two cycles. The evaluated variables were the leaf area index, shoot fresh and dry matter, commercial yield, and average stem diameter. Lisianthus cultivation under the lower limit of soil moisture equal to 0.20 cm3 cm−3 ensured the best results for all variables of commercial interest. No effect of potassium concentrations was observed on variables of commercial interest.

ABSTRACT: Thoracoscopy is replacing open lung biopsies because it is less invasive, usually the technique is done using three portals and intracorporeal suture technique. This study described the feasibility and efficacy of a novel pre tied loop ligature and to propose a thoracoscopic access strategy with two portals to perform lung biopsy in patients under 5 kg. Ten rabbits were positioned in dorsal recumbency. Total thoracoscopic lung biopsy was performed using a combined transdiaphragmatic approach and a right intercostal approach. A pre tied loop ligature was placed to perform a caudal lung lobe biopsy. Insufflation of the thoracic cavity was not performed. The total surgery time was 41.4 ± 14.5 min. The procedure was carried out free of complications that prevented slippage or tightening the knot or that made it come loose after the lung biopsy; there was no serious complication during the surgical procedure. The samples obtained averaged 1x0.64x0.45 cm (Length, Width, Depth) and were considered satisfactory according to the histopathologic evaluation. Thorax radiographs taken before and after the surgeries were compared and showed no pneumothorax or hemothorax. Necropsy confirmed no knot failure occurred at the biopsy site. The use of the novel pre tied loop ligature is a safe and effective technique, avoiding problems with the limited size of the thoracic cavity in small patients.

RESUMO: A toracoscopia está substituindo as biópsias pulmonares abertas por ser menos invasiva. Usualmente a técnica é feita utilizando três portais e ligaduras feitas intra corporalmente. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever a viabilidade e eficácia de uma nova ligadura com alça pré-amarrada e propor uma estratégia de acesso toracoscópico com dois portais para realizar biópsia pulmonar em pacientes com menos de 5kg. Dez coelhos foram posicionados em decúbito dorsal. A biópsia pulmonar por toracoscopia total foi feita pela abordagem combinada transdiafragmática e abordagem intercostal direita. Uma nova ligadura pré-amarrada foi colocada para realizar uma biópsia do lobo pulmonar caudal. Não foi realizada insuflação da cavidade torácica. O tempo total de cirurgia foi de 41,4 ± 14,5 min. Os procedimentos foram realizados sem complicações que impedissem o escorregamento ou aperto do nó ou que o soltassem após a biópsia pulmonar; não houve nenhuma intercorrência grave durante o procedimento cirúrgico. As amostras coletadas tinham tamanho médio 1x0,64x0,45 cm e foram consideradas satisfatórias de acordo com a avaliação histopatológica. As radiografias de tórax feitas antes e depois das cirurgias foram comparadas e não mostraram pneumotórax ou hemotórax. A necropsia confirmou que não ocorreu falha do nó no local da biópsia. Conclui-se que uso da nova ligadura com alça pré-amarrada é uma técnica segura e eficaz, evitando problemas com o tamanho limitado da cavidade torácica em pacientes pequenos.

RESUMO Cenários climáticos fornecem informações importantes para o planejamento de recursos hídricos. Contudo, eles mostram inconsistências com mudanças climáticas recentes em alguns casos, o que afeta sua robustez e confiabilidade. A avaliação de robustez pode auxiliar na identificação de áreas prioritárias na adaptação de recursos hídricos a mudanças climáticas. Mesmo sendo relevante, esse tipo de análise tem sido menosprezado em avaliações de mudanças climáticas, por exemplo, na América do Sul. Nesse estudo, avaliamos a robustez e confiabilidade de cenários de alteração de vazão os comparando com dados observados e modelados recentes. Projeções climáticas são mais prováveis de acontecer em regiões que mostram concordância entre mudanças recentes e projetadas, logo, a gestão deve dar mais peso aos cenários nestes locais. As bacias Tocantins-Araguaia, São Francisco, Atlântico Ocidental e do Prata (porção norte) concordam com o decréscimo de vazão, indicando que a mudança climática deve ser priorizada no planejamento. As bacias Orinoco e Amazônica mostraram forte discordância entre alterações recentes e projetadas de vazão, com tendências de aumento nas últimas décadas. Isso mostra que cenários futuros nessas regiões devem ser interpretados com cuidado. Sendo assim, a gestão de recursos hídricos poderia considerar que as regiões noroeste e alto-central da América do Sul apresentam projeções mais prováveis em comparação com as bacias Amazônica e Orinoco. ABSTRACT Climate scenarios are important information for water planning, but, in some cases, they disagree with recent climate alterations, which affects their robustness and reliability. Robustness evaluation can help identifying areas that should be prioritized by in water sector adaptation to climate change. Although crucial, this kind of analysis has been overlooked in most climate change assessments, for instance in South America. This study assesses the robustness and reliability of river discharge scenarios by comparing them with observed and modelled data. Areas where current changes and scenarios agree are more likely to experience changes and, therefore, water planners should pay special attention to them. Tocantins-Araguaia, São Francisco, Western Northeast Atlantic and upper La Plata basins agreed with a discharge decrease, indicating that climate change should be prioritized in planning. Orinoco and upper-western Amazon basins showed strong disagreement between recent and projected discharge alterations, with positive change in last decades, showing that scenarios in these regions should be carefully interpreted. Resumo Objetivou-se relatar a experiência no gerenciamento de pesquisa-ação sobre inquérito de hepatite C junto à comunidade carcerária no Triângulo Mineiro, Minas Gerais. A proposta foi desenvolvida entre março de 2019 e março de 2020, alcançando 240 pessoas, com o intuito de conter a disseminação do agravo por meio de inquérito, testagem e acompanhamento dos casos positivos. Adotou-se ação intersetorial, com articulação entre universidades, sociedade médica, hospital de ensino e Secretaria de Estado de Justiça e Segurança Pública. As estratégias para o gerenciamento da pesquisa-ação foram: cenários e atores do estudo, registro e formalização da atividade, aplicação dos testes e manejo dos internos reagentes. Dificuldades foram identificadas quanto à acomodação de rotinas entre equipe de pesquisadores e funcionamento próprio da penitenciária, o que exigiu treinamento ostensivo entre as partes e articulações gerenciais. Considera-se que o relato, quando destaca as estratégias adotadas para a condução da pesquisa, colabora para a organização de investigações futuras que visem acessar essa população ainda invisibilizada.

Abstract We aimed to report the experience in managing action research on hepatitis C investigation in the prison community in the Triângulo Mineiro region, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The proposal was developed from March 2019 to March 2020, reaching 240 people to contain the spread of the disease through a survey, testing, and monitoring of positive cases. We adopted intersectoral action with articulation between Universities, Medical Society, Teaching Hospital, and State Secretariat for Justice and Public Security. Strategies for the management of action research are described: study settings and stakeholders, registration and formalization of the activity, application of tests, and management of reagent inmates. We identified difficulties regarding the accommodation of routines among the research team and the proper functioning of the penitentiary, which required extensive training between the parties and managerial articulations. We consider that the report collaborates with the organization of future research aimed at accessing this still invisible population, the prison community when it highlights the strategies adopted to conduct the research.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a influência das características dos pacientes na hiperlactatemia em uma população admitida com infecção em unidades de terapia intensiva, bem como a influência da gravidade da hiperlactatemia na mortalidade hospitalar. Metódos: Foi realizada uma análise post hoc da hiperlactatemia no INFAUCI, um estudo nacional prospectivo, observacional e multicêntrico, que incluiu 14 unidades de terapia intensiva portuguesas. Foram selecionados pacientes admitidos com infecção em unidades de terapia intensiva com dosagem de lactato nas primeiras 12 horas de admissão. A sepse foi identificada de acordo com a definição Sepsis-2 aceita no momento da coleta de dados. A gravidade da hiperlactatemia foi classificada como leve (2 - 3,9mmol/L), moderada (4,0 - 9,9mmol/L) ou grave (> 10mmol/L). Resultados: De 1.640 pacientes admitidos com infecção, a hiperlactatemia ocorreu em 934 (57%) e foi classificada como leve, moderada e grave em 57,0%, 34,4% e 8,7% dos pacientes, respectivamente. A presença de hiperlactatemia e um maior grau de hiperlactatemia se associaram a um maior Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, a maior Índice de Comorbidade de Charlson e à presença de choque séptico. Em relação à curva Receiver Operating Characteristic do lactato para mortalidade hospitalar, foi encontrada área sob a curva de 0,64 (IC95% 0,61 - 0,72), que aumentou para 0,71 (IC95% 0,68 - 0,74) quando se combinou o Sequential Organ Failure Assessment. A mortalidade intra-hospitalar com outras covariáveis ajustadas pelo Simplified Acute Physiology Score II se associou à hiperlactatemia moderada e grave, com razão de chances de 1,95 (IC95% 1,4 - 2,7; p < 0,001) e 4,54 (IC95% 2,4 - 8,5; p < 0,001), respectivamente. Conclusão: Os níveis de lactato sanguíneo correlacionam-se independentemente com a mortalidade intra-hospitalar para graus moderados e graves de hiperlactatemia.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the influence of patient characteristics on hyperlactatemia in an infected population admitted to intensive care units and the influence of hyperlactatemia severity on hospital mortality. Methods: A post hoc analysis of hyperlactatemia in the INFAUCI study, a national prospective, observational, multicenter study, was conducted in 14 Portuguese intensive care units. Infected patients admitted to intensive care units with a lactate measurement in the first 12 hours of admission were selected. Sepsis was identified according to the Sepsis-2 definition accepted at the time of data collection. The severity of hyperlactatemia was classified as mild (2 - 3.9mmol/L), moderate (4.0 - 9.9mmol/L) or severe (> 10mmol/L). Results: In a total of 1,640 patients infected on admission, hyperlactatemia occurred in 934 patients (57%), classified as mild, moderate and severe in 57.0%, 34.4% and 8.7% of patients, respectively. The presence of hyperlactatemia and a higher degree of hyperlactatemia were both associated with a higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, a higher Charlson Comorbidity Index and the presence of septic shock. The lactate Receiver Operating Characteristic curve for hospital mortality had an area under the curve of 0.64 (95%CI 0.61 - 0.72), which increased to 0.71 (95%CI 0.68 - 0.74) when combined with Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score. In-hospital mortality with other covariates adjusted by Simplified Acute Physiology Score II was associated with moderate and severe hyperlactatemia, with odds ratio of 1.95 (95%CI 1.4 - 2.7; p < 0.001) and 4.54 (95%CI 2.4 - 8.5; p < 0.001), respectively. Conclusion: Blood lactate levels correlate independently with in-hospital mortality for moderate and severe degrees of hyperlactatemia.

ABSTRACT Subsistence hunting is the main source of protein for forest reserve dwellers, contributing to the development of spurious infections by Calodium hepaticum, frequently associated with the consumption of the liver from wild mammals. The prevalence of infections by soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and intestinal protozoa is considered an indicator of the social vulnerability of a country, besides providing information on habits, customs and quality of life of a given population. Intestinal parasites mostly affect poor rural communities with limited access to clean water and adequate sanitation. This study reports the results of a parasitological survey carried out in 2017 and 2019, in two municipalities (Xapuri and Sena Madureira) in Acre State. Stool samples were collected from 276 inhabitants. Upon receipt, each sample was divided into two aliquots. Fresh samples without preservative were processed and examined by the Kato-Katz technique. Samples fixed in 10% formalin were processed by the spontaneous sedimentation and the centrifugal sedimentation techniques. Calodium hepaticum eggs were found in three stool samples. The overall STH prevalence was 44.9%. The hookworm prevalence (19.2%) was higher than that of Ascaris lumbricoides (2.5%) and Trichuris trichiura (0.7%), an unexpected finding for municipalities belonging to the Western Brazilian Amazon. When considering parasites transmitted via the fecal-oral route, Endolimax nana and Entamoeba coli showed the highest positivity rates, of 13% and 10.9%, respectively. This study is the first report of spurious infection by C. hepaticum among forest reserve dwellers that consume undercooked liver of lowland pacas. Additionally, this is the first report of Blastocystis sp. in Acre State.

RESUMO: A cana-de-açúcar se destaca como uma das fontes de energia renovável frente às estratégias para reduzir a emissão de gases causadores do efeito estufa. O nitrogênio é um dos mais significativos devido ao seu impacto no crescimento de folhas e colmos. Portanto, o monitoramento eficiente do nitrogênio aplicado é essencial e o sensoriamento remoto se apresenta como uma alternativa na melhoria do gerenciamento da adubação. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo selecionar comprimentos de onda a partir de dados hiperespectrais de dossel da cana-de-açúcar para geração de modelos na predição da concentração de Nitrogênio. O estudo foi realizado em experimentos de campo instalados nos municípios de Piracicaba, Jaú e Santa Maria da Serra, estado São Paulo, na safra 2013/2014. Cada experimento foi alocado em blocos ao acaso, com parcelas subdivididas e quatro repetições, com variedades de cana-de-açúcar na parcela (três variedades por local, sendo a SP 81-3250 comum à todos) e doses de nitrogênio (0, 50, 100 e 150 kg.ha-1) na subparcela. Na seleção dos comprimentos de onda que melhor se correlacionam com o TFN foi utilizada a metodologia sPLS. Posteriormente, foi realizada a combinação linear dos comprimentos de onda selecionados pela metodologia sPLS, por meio de Regressão Linear Múltipla por Stepwise (SMLR). Foram identificadas bandas importantes nas regiões do visível (700 a 705 nm), red-edge(710 a 720 nm), infravermelho próximo (725, 925, 955 e 980 nm) e infravermelho de ondas curtas (1355, 1420, 1595, 1600, 1605 e 1610 nm). O modelo de predição de TFN teve valores de R² de 0,50 e o RMSE de 1,67 g.kg-1. Os modelos gerados para Piracicaba, Jaú e Santa Maria obtiveram R² ajustados e RMSE, respectivamente, de 0,31 considerado não confiável (1,30 g.kg-1), 0,53 (1,96 g.kg-1) e 0,54 (1,46 g.kg-1). Os sensores hiperespectrais de dossel podem ser utilizados para predição do TFN e monitoramento de aplicação de nitrogênio em cana-de-açúcar.

ABSTRACT: Sugarcane is a good source of renewable energy and helps reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. Nitrogen has a critical role in plant growth; therefore,estimating nitrogen levels is essential, and remote sensing can improve fertilizer management. This field study selects wavelengths from hyperspectral data on a sugarcane canopy to generate models for estimating leaf nitrogen concentrations. The study was carried out in the municipalities of Piracicaba, Jaú, and Santa Maria da Serra, state of São Paulo, in the 2013/2014 growing season. The experiments were carried out using a completely randomized block design with split plots (three sugarcane varieties per plot [variety SP 81-3250 was common to all plots] and four nitrogen concentrations [0, 50, 100, and 150 kgha-1] per subplot) and four repetitions. The wavelengths that best correlated with leaf nitrogen were selected usingsparse partial least square regression. The wavelength regionswere combinedby stepwise multiple linear regression. Spectral bands in the visible (700-705 nm), red-edge (710-720 nm), near-infrared (725, 925, 955, and 980 nm), and short-wave infrared (1355, 1420, 1595, 1600, 1605, and 1610 nm) regions were identified. The R² and RMSE of the model were 0.50 and 1.67 g.kg-1, respectively. The adjusted R² and RMSE of the models for Piracicaba, Jaú, and Santa Maria were 0.31 (unreliable) and 1.30 g.kg-1, 0.53 and 1.96 g.kg-1, and 0.54 and 1.46 g.kg-1, respectively. Our results showed that canopy hyperspectral reflectance can estimate leaf nitrogen concentrations and manage nitrogen application in sugarcane.

ABSTRACT Objective To assess testicular volumes and sexual maturation in patients with testicular torsion. Methods A retrospective analysis of consecutively treated patients with testicular torsion between 2016 and 2018. Age, pubic hair staging (Tanner), and by ultrasonography, volume of the unaffected testis (in cubic centimeters) were evaluated either immediately before surgery or at the first postoperative visit. Patients with previous testicular disease, such as cryptorchidism, or with no records of testicular volume were excluded. The analysis included descriptive statistics and Bayesian regression. Results We treated 149 patients during the study period, and 141 (94.6%, median age 17.3 years) met the inclusion criteria. Median testicular volume was 13.0cm3 (interquartile range of 10.5-15.2), with similar right and left volumes (12.9cm3versus 13.3cm3; p=0.94). Sixty-five (46.1%) patients were Tanner stage IV, 17 (12.1%) stage III, and 59 (41.8%) stage V. Conclusion In this study, we were able to estimate volumes of testicular torsion, which aggregated around late puberty values (13.0cm3 for the whole dataset, 12.2cm3 for patients <25 years), suggesting that testicular hypermobility, due to congenital anatomical abnormalities, remains quiescent until the organ reaches a critical volume, after which torsion becomes possible. These findings provide a tentative explanation for the disease’s age distribution.

ABSTRACT This study represents the first overview of the epidemiological dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in Espirito Santo (ES) State, Brazil, filling in knowledge on this topic, observing data collected in the State, and aiming at understanding the epidemiological dynamics of the virus in ES, as well as its possible routes of transmission and dissemination. . Our results highlight that, so far, nine lineages have been identified with ES State. The B.1.1.33 lineage was the first with the highest occurrence in ES, remaining predominant until September 2020. The second predominant lineage was Gamma, representing 45% of the samples. The Delta lineage appears on the State scene, proving to be the next dominant lineage. This research allowed us to understand how the lineages advanced and were distributed in the State, which is important for future work, also making it possible to guide sanitary control measures. Data analyses were made through the GISAID database for ES State showed that the pandemic in the State has been evolving dynamically with lineage replacements over the months since the first notification.

RESUMO Objetivo: descrevemos nossa experiência com uso da plataforma robótica no tratamento das recidivas operadas previamente por laparoscopia, mantendo assim uma proposta minimamente invasiva a esses pacientes, apesar de haver uma predileção pela via anterior e aberta nestes casos. Métodos: foram incluídos pacientes submetidos a hernioplastia inguinal robótica transabdominal pré-peritoneal como tratamento de recidiva e que foram operados previamente por laparoscopia, entre dezembro de 2015 e setembro de 2020 e mantidos em uma base de dados ambulatorial prospectiva. Variáveis de interesse incluíram dados demográficos, características herniárias, detalhes operatórios, ocorrências do sítio cirúrgico em 30 dias (com ou sem necessidade de intervenção), infeção do sítio cirúrgico, tempo de seguimento e taxa de recidiva. Resultados: dezenove pacientes (95% masculino, média de idade de 55 anos, média de índice de massa corporal 28kg/m2) e 27 hérnias operadas (N=8 bilaterais). Média de tempo cirúrgico 168.9±49.3 min (variando 90-240). N=2 complicações intraoperatórias por lesão de vasos epigástricos inferiores. N=2 seromas e N=1 hematoma foram identificados no pós-operatório; N=1 paciente apresentou dor crônica pós operatória. Após um tempo de seguimento médio de 35.7 meses (intervalo entre quartis 13-49), nenhuma recidiva foi diagnosticada. Conclusões: o uso da plataforma robótica parece ser seguro e efetivo no tratamento das recidivas operadas previamente laparoscopia, nesse pequeno grupo de pacientes selecionados, apesar de requerer expertise em cirurgia robótica. Outros estudos com maiores casuísticas são necessários para estabelecer o papel desta técnica no cenário das hérnias inguinais recidivadas.

ABSTRACT Objective: to describe the use of the robotic platform in inguinal hernia recurrence after a previous laparoscopic repair. Methods: patients with recurrent inguinal hernias following a laparoscopic repair who have undergone robotic transabdominal preperitoneal between December 2015 through September 2020 were identified in a prospectively maintained database. Outcomes of interest included demographics, hernia characteristics, operative details and rates of 30-day surgical site occurrence, surgical site occurrences requiring procedural interventions, surgical site infection and hernia recurrence were abstracted. Results: nineteen patients (95% male, mean age 55 years, mean body mass index 28) had 27 hernias repaired (N=8 bilateral). Average operative time was 168.9 ± 49.3min (range 90-240). There were two intraoperative complications all of them were bleeding from the inferior epigastric vessel injuries. Three SSOs occurred (N=2 seromas and N=1 hematoma. After a median 35.7 months follow-up (IQR 13-49), no recurrence has been diagnosed. One patient developed chronic postoperative inguinal pain. Conclusions: on a small number of selected patients and experienced hands, we found that the use of the robotic platform for repair of recurrent hernias after prior laparoscopic repair appears to be feasible, safe and effective despite being technically demanding. Further studies in larger cohorts are necessary to determine if this technique provides any benefits in recurrent inguinal hernia scenario.

ABSTRACT Objective To stratify ultrasound samples in a pediatric population undergoing evaluation for acute appendicitis to examine the variability in cecal appendix diameter, in different age groups, and to determine whether there is a prevalent value for each age group. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study with 196 children aged 0 to 15 years. Data were extracted from reports of ultrasound examinations carried out between 2008 and 2015. Children with sonographic diagnosis of appendicitis or other signs of periappendiceal inflammation were excluded. Results The evaluation of the anteroposterior measurement of the cecal appendix revealed a mean diameter of 4.14mm (standard deviation: 0.93mm; 95%CI: 3.86-4.14). Cecal appendix diameter did not differ significant between age groups. Conclusion Evaluation of the anteroposterior diameter of the cecal appendix in centimeters in a sample of 196 children aged 0 to15 years revealed a mean diameter of 4.14mm (standard deviation, 0.93mm. There were no significant differences in cecal appendix diameter following stratification by age. Results indicate a single value can be adopted for mean cecal appendix diameter in pediatric populations.
