Abstract: Aim Long-term ecological research often integrates many research groups and subjects in one or few sites sampled systematically along the time. In the Amazon, there is a tradition of long-term research in terrestrial habitats, but this has been less common in floodplain lakes. This study systematically reviews 35 years of research (1988-2022) in Batata Lake, a clear water flood plain lake impacted by bauxite mining tailings for ten years (1979-1989) and discuss some research opportunities and challenges for the future. Methods The review covered 99 scientific reports (78 papers and 21 book chapters) comprising a large spectrum of data from snapshot observations and experiments to enduring quarterly observational and hypothesis-testing studies. Soil, sediments, and the water column were consistently sampled in natural and impacted areas. Results Research topics were quite diverse and covered biological communities from aquatic virus to igapó flooded forests and provided an overview of ecological processes such as primary and secondary production. Ecological variables monitored along the project were constrained by a strong seasonality of the flood pulse and the effect of sampling areas (natural and impacted), which was performed by very connected research groups. Conclusions Despite the extensive information, long-term ecosystem function trends are still incomplete.

Resumo: Objetivo Pesquisas ecológicas de longa duração geralmente integram muitos grupos de pesquisa e assuntos variados. Essas pesquisas concentram-se em amostrar sistematicamente ao longo do tempo um ou poucos locais. Na Amazônia, muitas iniciativas foram realizadas para melhor entender as dinâmicas da floresta, mas poucos estudos de longa duração se dedicaram a compreender os lagos de inundação em escala de longo prazo. Neste estudo trazemos informações de pesquisas realizadas durante 35 anos (1988-2022) no Lago Batata, um lago amazônico de águas claras impactado por rejeitos de mineração de bauxita durante dez anos (1979-1989). Métodos Usando a abordagem de uma revisão sistemática da literatura 99 trabalhos (78 artigos e 21 capítulos de livros), nós encontramos que durante os anos de monitoramento, os esforços de amostragem variaram de algumas observações e experimentos pontuais a estudos trimestrais de observação e teste de hipóteses duradouros. Solo, sedimentos e coluna d'água foram amostrados consistentemente no lago como um todo e comparadas às áreas natural e impactada por rejeito de mineração. Resultados Os tópicos de pesquisa foram bastante diversos e abrangeram comunidades biológicas desde vírus aquáticos à floresta de igapó, os quais forneceram uma visão geral dos processos ecológicos locais como produção primária e produção secundária planctônica. A maioria das variáveis ecológicas monitoradas ao longo do projeto foram reguladas por uma forte sazonalidade exercida pelo pulso de inundação e pelos efeitos das áreas de amostragem (natural e impactada), e foram amostradas por grupos de pesquisa muito conectados. Conclusões Apesar da extensa informação sobre a estrutura e função do Lago Batata, tendências gerais sobre suas funções ecossistêmicas permanecem ainda incompletas.

ABSTRACT Cedro-rosa (Cedrela fissilis) is native to Brazil with great potential for seedling production. However, soil correction is necessary to improve its performance, due to the edaphoclimatic conditions in Brazil, where soils have a high weathering degree and large amounts of Fe and Al oxides. Here, we evaluated the combined effect of soil acidity correction by liming and phosphate fertilization using single superphosphate on the growth and development of cedro-rosa seedlings cultivated in Amazonian soil. The study was carried out in a greenhouse at the Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA) – Campus Capitão Poço, between July and December 2019. Different levels of base saturation (V%) showed no influence on the variables analyzed. On the other hand, phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), and sulfur (S) supplied by single superphosphate significantly influenced growth and development of cedro-rosa seedlings. The optimum P levels for stem diameter (SD), leaves number (LN), root dry matter (RDM), stem dry matter (StDM), leaf dry matter (LDM), total dry matter (TDM) were 405, 286, 385, 421.87, 393.75, 445 mg dm-3 of P, respectively. Seedling quality (DQI) showed a positive linear response to levels of P, Ca, and S in single superphosphate. Thus, fertilization with P was necessary at the nursery stage for the cultivation of the species in soil of low chemical fertility. For better quality of cedro-rosa seedlings grown in pots, the application of 400 mg dm-3 of P is recommended.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar os fatores relacionados a maciez da carne de frangos criados em sistema alternativo. Para o experimento foi avaliado a força de cisalhamento, diâmetro das fibras musculares do peito e da coxa, conteúdo de tecido conjuntivo através de histologia e teor de colágeno solúvel e total. O experimento foi executado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado (DIC) com uso de duas linhagens (Pescoço Pelado e Paraíso Pedrês) de ambos os sexos (macho e fêmea) e abatidos em quatro idades (65, 75, 85 e 95 dias), criados em sistema alternativo, sendo utilizado um total de 192 aves. Para força de cisalhamento (FC), ocorreu aumento nos valores em ambos os cortes em função da idade de abate e houve interação entre linhagem e sexo, com as maiores médias para os machos da linhagem Pescoço Pelado e diferença entre sexo para Paraíso Pedrês. A idade de abate influenciou o diâmetro das fibras musculares e o conteúdo de tecido conjuntivo do peito e da coxa, havendo aumento linear destes parâmetros em função da idade ao abate. O sexo não afetou o diâmetro das fibras musculares da coxa, enquanto na linhagem Paraíso Pedrês foram verificadas maiores médias em relação à Pescoço Pelado. A análise de componentes principais demonstrou a relação entre a força de cisalhamento e as demais variáveis analisadas. Assim, o aumento do diâmetro das fibras musculares do peito e da coxa também está relacionado à redução da maciez da carne de frangos caipiras, conjuntamente com o aumento da quantidade de tecido conjuntivo, teor de colágeno total e redução de sua solubilidade.

ABSTRACT: This study assessed whether the meat tenderness of broilers raised in a free-range system varies by sex, lineage, and age at the time of slaughter. Physicochemical parameters were measured to adequately assess breast and thigh muscle morphometry, including shear force (SF), muscle fibre diameter (MD), histological connective tissue (HCT) content, and total and soluble collagen contents (TCC and SCC, respectively). The experiment was conducted with a completely randomized design using two lineages (Pescoço Pelado and Paraíso Pedrês), with specimens of both sexes raised in a free-range system. Randomly selected broilers were slaughtered at 65, 75, 85, and 95 days old. A total of 192 birds were analysed. SF values correlated positively with age. The highest SF values were measured in thighs of the Pescoço Pelado lineage. Age also showed a positive correlation with MD and HCT content of the breast regardless of lineage. Gender did not have any significant correlation with physical parameters; although, higher values were measured in thighs of the Paraíso Pedrês than in those of the Pescoço Pelado lineage. There were no significant differences among treatments regarding the SCC and TCC of thighs and breasts. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed relationships between SF and the rest of the measured attributes. PCA showed that age was positively correlated with the SF, MD, and HCT content of thighs and breasts. In contrast, SCC and TCC had negative correlations. The greatest breast and thigh MD values were associated with the least tender meat. Thus, age at the time of slaughter proved to be the most significant parameter impacting the physical characteristics of muscle morphometry and meat tenderness of breasts and thighs of broilers raised in a free-range system.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Prostate cancer (PC) is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in males. 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT, a non-invasive diagnostic tool to evaluate PC with prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) expression, has emerged as a more accurate alternative to assess disease staging. We aimed to identify predictors of positive 68Ga-PSMA PET and the accuracy of this technique. Materials and methods: Diagnostic accuracy cross-sectional study with prospective and retrospective approaches. We performed a comprehensive literature search on PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase database in search of studies including PC patients submitted to radical prostatectomy or radiotherapy with curative intent and presented biochemical recurrence following ASTRO 1996 criteria. A total of 35 studies involving 3910 patients submitted to 68-Ga-PSMA PET were included and independently assessed by two authors: 8 studies on diagnosis, four on staging, and 23 studies on restaging purposes. The significance level was α=0.05. Results: pooled sensitivity and specificity were 0.90 (0.86-0.93) and 0.90 (0.82-0.96), respectively, for diagnostic purposes; as for staging, pooled sensitivity and specificity were 0.93 (0.86-0.98) and 0.96 (0.92-0.99), respectively. In the restaging scenario, pooled sensitivity and specificity were 0.76 (0.74-0.78) and 0.45 (0.27-0.58), respectively, considering the identification of prostate cancer in each described situation. We also obtained specificity and sensitivity results for PSA subdivisions. Conclusion: 68Ga-PSMA PET provides higher sensitivity and specificity than traditional imaging for prostate cancer.

Resumo Fundamento A regurgitação mitral (RM) é prevalente em pacientes submetidos a implante transcateter de válvula aórtica (TAVI). Há algumas controvérsias sobre o impacto prognóstico da RM na sobrevida de pacientes submetidos a TAVI. Objetivo Examinar a relação entre TAVI e RM em uma população de pacientes do Registro Brasileiro de TAVI. Métodos Setecentos e noventa e cinco pacientes do Registro Brasileiro de TAVI foram divididos na linha de base, alta e acompanhamento de acordo com o grau da RM da maneira seguinte: ausente/leve (RMAL) ou moderado/grave (RMMG). Eles foram subsequentemente reagrupados de acordo com as mudanças imediatas e tardias na gravidade da RM após TAVI da maneira seguinte: RM sem mudança, melhora ou piora. Foram analisados os preditores e o impacto prognóstico na linha de base, bem como as mudanças na gravidade da RM. A significância estatística foi estabelecida em p < 0,05. Resultados RMMG basal estava presente em 19,3% dos pacientes e foi um preditor de aumento da mortalidade tardia. Imediatamente após o TAVI, 47,4% dos casos melhoraram para RMAL, previsto por uma pontuação mais alta da Society of Thoracic Surgeons e um grau mais alto de regurgitação aórtica basal. No acompanhamento, 9,2% dos casos de RMAL pioraram para RMMG, enquanto 36,8% dos casos de RMMG melhoraram para RMAL. Fração de ejeção do ventrículo esquerdo (FEVE) mais baixa na linha de base e melhora na FEVE durante o acompanhamento foram preditores de melhora da RM. Piora progressiva da RM no acompanhamento foi um preditor independente de maior mortalidade tardia após TAVI (p = 0,005). Conclusões A RMMG na linha de base é um preditor de mortalidade tardia após TAVI. FEVE mais baixa e melhora na FEVE durante o acompanhamento são preditores de melhora da RM após TAVI. A pior progressiva da gravidade da RM durante o acompanhamento é um preditor independente de mortalidade tardia; isto é um achado raro na literatura.

Abstract Background Mitral regurgitation (MR) is prevalent in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). There are some controversies about the prognostic impact of MR in survival of TAVI patients. Objective To examine the relationship between TAVI and MR in a patient population from the Brazilian TAVI Registry. Methods Seven hundred and ninety-five patients from the Brazilian TAVI Registry were divided at baseline, discharge, and follow-up according to their MR grade as follows: absent/mild (AMMR) or moderate/severe (MSMR). They were subsequently regrouped according to their immediate and late changes in MR severity after TAVI as follows: no change, improved, or worsened MR. Predictors and prognostic impact on baseline as well as changes in MR severity were analyzed. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results Baseline MSMR was present in 19.3% of patients and was a predictor of increased late mortality. Immediately after TAVI, 47.4 % of cases improved to AMMR, predicted by a higher Society of Thoracic Surgeons score and a higher grade of baseline aortic regurgitation. Upon follow-up, 9.2% of cases of AMMR worsened to MSMR, whereas 36.8% of cases of MSMR improved to AMMR. Lower baseline left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and improvement in LVEF at follow-up were predictors of MR improvement. Progressive worsening of MR upon follow-up was an independent predictor of higher late mortality after TAVI (p = 0.005). Conclusions Baseline MSMR predicts late mortality after TAVI. Lower LVEF and improved LVEF at follow-up predict MR improvement after TAVI. Progressive worsening of MR severity at follow-up is an independent predictor of late mortality, which is a rare finding in the literature.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer screening in Brazil is done using Pap smears. Women who are most likely to have a preinvasive lesion or cervical cancer are immediately referred for colposcopy. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of endocervical cytological tests in diagnosing preinvasive cervical lesions in women with initial high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL), or atypical squamous cells in which high-grade lesions could not be ruled out (ASC-H), or atypical glandular cells (AGC), and whose colposcopy did not show any abnormalities, with no fully visible transformation zone (types 2 and 3). DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective observational study conducted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. METHODS: Data from women who came to the cervical pathology outpatient clinic between January 2012 and April 2017 were analyzed. The results from endocervical cytological tests were compared with the final diagnosis, which was obtained through examination of a surgical specimen or, among women who did not undergo an excisional procedure, after cytological and colposcopic follow-up for two years. RESULTS: We included 78 women. The sensitivity of endocervical cytological tests was 72.7%; specificity 98.5%; positive and negative predictive values 88.9% and 95.6%, respectively; and positive and negative likelihood ratios 48.7 and 0.28. CONCLUSION: Endocervical cytological tests are simple, inexpensive and noninvasive, and form a reliable method for determining management among patients with HSIL, ASC-H and AGC cytological findings and negative colposcopic findings without visualization of the squamocolumnar junction.

Resumo Peltaea chiquitana tem sido um nome de identidade duvidosa devido à descrição original incompleta e aos materiais originais não possuírem frutos. Estudos recentes de herbários e trabalhos de campo realizados trouxeram novos dados sobre essa espécie. Assim, apresentamos uma redescrição de P. chiquitana, incluindo a coluna, fruto e semente pela primeira vez. A extensão da distribuição geográfica de P. chiquitana é apresentada com base nos primeiros registros para o Brasil. Além disso, são apresentadas ilustrações, microscopia eletrônica de varredura, mapa de distribuição e estado de conservação.

Abstract Peltaea chiquitana has been a name of dubious identity due to the incomplete original description and original materials lacking fruits. Recent herbaria and field work studies have uncovered new data for this species. Thus, we present a redescription of P. chiquitana, including, for the first time, details of column, fruit, and seed morphology. An extended geographical distribution of P. chiquitana is presented, based on the first records of the species to Brazil. Furthermore, line drawings, scanning electronic microscope photographs, a distribution map, and a conservation assessment are presented here.

Abstract CoMo/MgO catalysts with low loading of cobalt and molybdenum were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and the sol-gel method for high yield production of carbon nanotubes (CNT). A detailed characterization of the catalysts, as-produced CNT and purified CNT, indicated a relationship between carbon nanotube properties, synthesis and purification steps. Excess of molybdenum in the catalyst caused a decrease in carbon yield and produced CNT with a lower degree of graphitization. Catalysts prepared by the sol-gel method and with higher molybdenum loading showed an improved interaction between cobalt and molybdenum, increasing the formation of CoMoO4, which was not completely removed during the purification step. The purification removed all MgO and part of the cobalt and molybdenum present in samples without significant damage to the CNT structure. An increase in sample purity could be achieved by increasing reaction time.

The Guidelines Project, an initiative of the Brazilian Medical Association, aims to combine information from the medical field in order to standardize procedures to assist the reasoning and decision-making of doctors. The information provided through this project must be assessed and criticized by the physician responsible for the conduct that will be adopted, depending on the conditions and the clinical status of each patient.
