ABSTRACT In Argentina there have been few evaluations of Andean pseudocereal plantings. This study explored the response of Amaranthus cruentus cv Mexicano to different plant densities under furrow irrigation in the lower valley of the river Negro, Patagonia, Argentina. The experimental design consisted of 3 blocks with randomized treatments (subplots), each one corresponding to different plant density. The treatments were sown in rows with spacing of 0.70 m (one row per ridge) and others with a spacing of 0.35 m (two rows per ridge). The plant densities evaluated were: 70,800 - 84,200 - 97,700 - 116,000 - 114,000 - 225,300 and 394,000 plants ha-1. Different biometric variables and their components were measured: plant height, number of leaves, biomass and economic yield. The results suggest that the optimum plant density was 116,000 plants ha-1 with a row spacing of 0.70 m. This density produces an adequate plant stand from which to harvest optimal biological and economical yields. The contributions of this study demonstrated the potential of the A. cruentus crop in the lower valley of the river Negro, representing the southernmost study of plant density made for this pseudocereal in the world.

Abstract American mink (Neovison vison) is the most widespread invasive carnivore in Patagonia. Based on field surveys and historical records, we present novel and detailed information of the American Mink present distribution along 180km of the Río Negro. This invasion nucleus represents the most northeastern area recorded for the species, a new invaded ecoregion (Monte Oriental) and a new province with wild populations (Buenos Aires). We document the existence of a fur farm located in Carmen de Patagones and Viedma cities (1965-1974) that may have originated this focus. We recommend the prompt design and implementation of a control plan.

Resumen El visón americano (Neovison vison) es el carnívoro exótico invasor de mayor distribución en Patagonia. Basados en relevamientos de campo y archivos históricos se presenta información detallada sobre su actual distribución en 180 km del Río Negro. Este foco representa la distribución más noreste, un nuevo ambiente invadido (Monte Oriental) y una nueva provincia con poblaciones silvestres (Buenos Aires). Documentamos la existencia de un criadero en las ciudades de Carmen de Patagones y Viedma (1965-1974), que podría ser el origen de este foco. Recomendamos diseñar e implementar planes de monitoreo y control de manera urgente.

Darwiniana, nueva serie 7(2): 199-207. Several factors limit the native plants production. The aim of this study was to optimize the germination of Prosopis alpataco f. alpataco from northeastern Patagonia, Argentina. This is a key species of the Monte, one of the most threatened South American ecoregions. Seeds were incubated in chamber at 25 - 45 ºC in darkness for 7 days, evaluating eight germinative parameters. Chemical scarification with H SO (2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 min) and mechanical scarification (by partial and total cutting of the 2 4 seminal cover edge) were tested. The best results (100 % germinative capacity reached in one day) were recorded at 30 ºC (optimum germination temperature) in seeds scarified with H SO (during 30 min) and 24 with total cutting of the seminal cover edge. The use of H SO is recommended for mass propagation and the total cutting of the seminal cover edge for small-scale production. It can be concluded that P. alpataco f. alpataco from northeastern Patagonia had a higher germinative response after an exposure to a range of relatively simple chemical or mechanical treatments. The techniques achieved here provide valuable information for conservation and production of plants of this species. This work represents the first optimum germinative conditions of P. alpataco f. alpataco from northeastern Patagonia. Its results open new lines for future research of other austral Prosopis species.

Varios factores limitan la producción de las plantas nativas. El objetivo de este estudio fue optimizar la germinación de Prosopis alpataco f. alpataco del noreste de la Patagonia Argentina. Esta es una especie clave del Monte, una de las ecorregiones sudamericanas más amenazadas. Las semillas se incubaron en cámara durante 7 días, a 25-45 ºC en oscuridad. Fueron evaluados ocho parámetros germinativos. Se testearon pretratamientos de escarificación química con H SO (2, 5, 10, 2 4, 20, 30, 40, 50 y 60 min) y de escarificación mecánica (mediante corte parcial y total del borde de la cubierta seminal). Los mejores resultados (100 % de la capacidad germinativa alcanzada en un día) se registraron a 30 ºC (temperatura óptima de germinación), en semillas escarificadas con H SO (durante 24 30 min) y con el corte total del borde de la cubierta seminal. Se recomienda el uso de H SO para la propagación masiva, y el corte total del borde de la cubierta seminal para la producción a pequeña escala. Se puede concluir que P. alpataco f. alpataco tiene una respuesta germinativa relativamente alta después de su exposición a una serie de tratamientos químicos o mecánicos simples. Las técnicas logradas aquí proporcionan información valiosa para planes de conservación y producción de esta especie. Este trabajo representa el primer reporte sobre las condiciones óptimas de germinación para P. alpataco f. alpataco del noreste de la Patagonia. Estos resultados abren nuevas líneas para futuras investigaciones de otras especies australes de Prosopis.
