ABSTRACT The present study evaluated the effects of the inclusión of ground Moringa oleifera and Brosimum alicastrum leaf meal in the diet of Mexican hairless pigs (MHP) on the amount of intramuscular fat, subcutaneous fat, leg muscle (Biceps femoris) fat, loin muscle (Longissimus dorsi) fat, leg and back fat, and the expression of lipid metabolism genes. Hairless pigs are reared in the Mexican tropics and are characterised by their body and intramuscular fat accumulation. Eighteen male pigs fed for 82 d were randomly allotted to three experimental isoenergetic and isoproteic diets, where M. oleifera or B. alicastrum (six pigs per diet) replaced wheat bran. The diets used were a control diet, a diet with 10% M. oleifera leaf meal, and a diet with 10% ground B. alicastrum leaf meal. The M. oleifera diet decreased (P<0.05) the fat ratio in the Longissimus dorsi muscles, back fat, rib fat, total carcass fat, and the carcass fat: meat ratio. The B. alicastrum diet only decreased fat in the Biceps femoris muscle, back fat, and rib fat. Moringa oleifera and B. alicastrum diets also promoted the overexpression of mRNA from the stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD), fatty acid synthase (FASN), acetyl-CoA carboxylase alpha (ACACA), sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1) and acyl carrier protein (ACP) lipogenic genes in the Biceps femoris muscle and leg fat (P<0.001). In addition, lower ACACA and SREBP1 mRNA expression in the Longissimus dorsi muscle and back fat (P<0.001) were related to the lower amount of fat in pigs fed M. oleifera and B. alicastrum. The inclusion of Moringa oleifera and Brosimum alicastrum meals 10% in the diet of the pig MHP reduces fat, this is an important finding because fat is abundant in this type of pig.

Abstract Complex vertebral malformation (CVM) is an autosomal recessive genetic syndrome present in Holstein cattle. The disease results in direct economic losses for cattle ranchers due to abortions and deaths of newborn calves. The purpose of the study was to estimate the allelic and genotypic frequencies of CVM syndrome in three Holstein cow herds in western Mexico and determine whether an improving effect between CVM genotype and milk production exists. A total of 308 cows were genotyped using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR/RFLP) assays. The cow’s genotypes and first- and second-lactation total milk yield adjusted to 305 days were compared using a mixed statistical model, and the genotypic frequencies were calculated. The total recessive allele frequency of the CVM was 0.06. Milk production by lactation did not differ between CVM carriers and normal cows. It is concluded that not a direct relationship was found between milk production and CVM carrier status in the Mexican herds sampled.

Resumen El complejo de malformación vertebral (CVM) es un síndrome genético autosómico recesivo presente en el ganado Holstein. La enfermedad causa pérdidas económicas directas para los ganaderos debido a los abortos y la muerte de becerros neonatos. El propósito del estudio fue estimar las frecuencias génicas y genotípicas del síndrome CVM en tres hatos de vacas Holstein en el occidente de México y determinar si existe un efecto mejorante entre el genotipo CVM y la producción de leche. Se genotiparon 308 vacas usando la técnica de reacción en cadena de la polimerasa con polimorfismos de longitud de fragmento de restricción (PCR/RFLP, por sus siglas en inglés). Se compararon los genotipos de las vacas y los promedios de producción de leche de primera y segunda lactancia ajustados a 305 días utilizando un modelo estadístico mixto, y se calcularon frecuencias génicas y genotípicas. La frecuencia total del alelo recesivo de CVM fue de 0.06. La producción de leche por lactancia no difirió entre los portadores CVM y las vacas normales. Se concluyó que no hay una relación directa entre la producción de leche y el genotipo de portador de CVM en los hatos mexicanos muestreados.

Methane (CH4) production by ruminants it comes from their natural digestive process but it constitutes an energy loss and it contributes to greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, therefore more research has been recently focused to reduce ruminal methanogenesis, which is influenced by many factors, some of them are: feed intake, diet composition and digestibility, and previous food processing. Between CH4 mitigation strategies proposed, dietary-nutritional manipulation it seems the most simple, practical and feasible. In countries where GEI emissions inventories has been estimated, methane quantity it is very important, and for example, in New Zeland, it is perceptible and considered urgent the necessity that farmers have access to technologies to decrease methane emissions in a safe and cost-effective manner. In Mexico it has been found significant differences between factors proposed by different entities, suggesting the development of more studies at different climatic conditions. In order to develop mitigation strategies to methane emissions from livestock it must be possible to quantify them in a wide type of circumstances, and in fact, there are many methods for methane emissions estimation and measurement. The objective of this review is the compilation and diffusion of information about methane emission by ruminants, their effects on global warming and climate change, and actual mitigation alternatives.

La producción de metano (CH4) por los rumiantes se deriva de manera natural del proceso digestivo en estos, pero constituye una pérdida de energía y contribuye a las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI), por lo que ha aumentado el número de investigaciones a fin de reducir la metanogénesis ruminal. Esta última está influenciada por varios factores, entre los que destacan: consumo de alimento, composición y digestibilidad de la dieta y procesamiento previo del alimento. Entre las estrategias para mitigar las emisiones de CH4 que se han propuesto, la manipulación dietética-nutricional parece ser la de mayor potencial, simplicidad y factibilidad. En aquellos países que han estimado su inventario de GEI, la cantidad de metano es importante y en Nueva Zelanda, por ejemplo, se percibe como urgente la necesidad de que los ganaderos tengan acceso a tecnologías que les permitan reducir las emisiones de GEI de una manera segura y económicamente efectiva. En México se han encontrado diferencias significativas entre los factores propuestos por distintas fuentes, lo que sugiere desarrollar más estudios en las diferentes condiciones climáticas del país. Para desarrollar estrategias para mitigar las emisiones de CH4 por el ganado, debe ser posible cuantificarlas en una amplia gama de circunstancias, por lo que existen varios métodos tanto para estimarlas como para medirlas. El objetivo de esta revisión es compilar y difundir información sobre la emisión de CH4 por los rumiantes, sus posibles efectos en el calentamiento y en el cambio climático global, así como las alternativas existentes para su mitigación.

During a study carried out in Mexico in 2003 and 2004, both Ureaplasma spp and Mycoplasma lipofaciens were isolated from the upper trachea of live, healthy commercial White Leghorn (Gallus gallus domesticus) birds. In total 13 U. spp and 8 M. lipofaciens isolates were identified among the 223 Mycoplasmas isolated. U. spp was isolated from one single farm located in the state of Jalisco, housing 50-wk-old hens. M. lipofaciens was isolated from several farms in the States of Jalisco and Puebla, including 50-80 wk-old birds. This is the first report about the isolation and identification of both U. spp and M. lipofaciens in Mexico. This can be considered relevant since Ureaplasmas can be of avian or human origin, so that determining the potential interspecies transmission is required. In addition, M. lipofaciens yields positive reactions when serological tests for M. synoviae are performed, which can result in diagnostic errors and unnecessary treatments.

Durante un estudio realizado en México durante los años 2003 y 2004 se realizó el aislamiento de Ureaplasma spp (U. spp) y de Mycoplasma lipofaciens (M. lipofaciens) de la porción superior de la tráquea de aves comerciales vivas y sanas tipo White Leghorn (Gallus gallus domesticus). Se identificaron un total de 13 aislamientos de U. spp y 8 aislamientos de M. lipofaciens entre los 223 micoplasmas aislados. El aislamiento de U. spp se realizó en una sola granja avícola localizada en el estado de Jalisco en aves de 50 semanas de edad. El aislamiento de M. lipofaciens se realizó en granjas avícolas localizadas en el mismo estado de Jalisco así como en el estado de Puebla, en aves de 50 a 80 semanas de edad. Este es el primer informe del aislamiento e identificación de U. spp y de M. lipofaciens en México, lo que puede considerarse relevante si se toma en cuenta que los Ureaplasmas pueden ser de origen aviar o humano, y por ello será necesario determinar su posible transmisión entre especies. Además M. lipofaciens reacciona positivamente cuando se realizan pruebas serológicas hacia M. synoviae, lo que puede generar errores en diagnóstico y tratamientos innecesarios.

The aim of this study was to compare the genetic variability and diversity, and genetic distances between Mexican Creole pigs - Pelón Mexicano (CPM) and Cuinos (CC) - with the commercial breed Yorkshire for the candidate genes CAST, DECR1, HAL, HFABP4, LEP, LIPE, MCR4, MYOG, RN and CHX, using the PCR-RFLP technique. One hundred eighty pigs (59 CPM, 65 CC and 56 Yorkshire) were evaluated. Gene and genotypic frequencies, heterozygosity, genetic distances and filogenetic trees between breed groups were analyzed. In the comparison among the three breeds, the allelic and genotypic frequencies were different for CAST, DECR1, HFABP4, LEP, MCR4 and CHX. For LIPE, CC pigs were similar to Yorkshire; while for MYOG, the CPM were similar to Yorkshire breeds. There were no differences in the genic and genotypic frequencies for HAL and RN genes between Creole and Yorkshire populations. The Yorkshire breed had higher favorable allele frequency for CAST, LIPE, MCR4 and MYOG, smaller for DECR1, HFABP4, and for CHX, and moderate for LEP genes. The heterozygosity average for all genes was higher in CPM (0.42±0.05) and similar in both the CC (0.33±0.06) and Yorkshire (0.35±0.05) breeds. In the estimation of genetic distances considering all genes, the CC breed are more distant from the Yorshire pigs.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue comparar la variabilidad, diversidad y distancias genéticas entre cerdos criollos, Pelón Mexicano (CPM) y Cuinos (CC), con Yorkshire, cuanto a los genes candidatos CAST, DECR1, HAL, HFABP4, LEP, LIPE, MCR4, MYOG, RN y CHX, a través de analysis por PCR-RFLP. Se evaluaron 180 cerdos: 59 CPM, 65 CC y 56 Yorkshire. Se analizaron las frecuencias génicas y genotípicas, heterocigosidad, distancias genéticas y árboles filogenéticos entre grupos raciales. Para CAST, DECR1, HFABP4, LEP, MCR4 y CHX las frecuencias génicas y genotípicas fueron diferentes al comparar las tres razas. En LIPE, los CC fueron iguales a los Yorkshire; en cuanto a MYOG, los CPM fueron iguales a los Yorkshire. No hubo diferencias entre poblaciones criollas y Yorkshire en las frecuencias génicas y genotípicas para HAL y RN. Los cerdos Yorkshire presentaron mayor frecuencia en alelos favorables para CAST, LIPE, MCR4 y MYOG, menor frecuencia de DECR1, HFABP4, CHX, y moderada en LEP. La heterocigosidad promedio para todos los genes fue mayor en CPM (0,42±0,05) y similar en CC (0,33±0,06) y Yorkshire (0,35±0,05). Al calcular distancias genéticas con todos los genes, los CC se encuentran más distantes de los Yorkshire.

Los sistemas agroforestales en América Latina, particularmente en México han destacado. Nayarit tiene potencial para el impulso agropecuario-forestal donde las especies leñosas interactúan con otros componentes (cultivos anuales, perennes y animales) en un sistema integral. El objetivo fue evaluar la adaptación y desarrollo de especies agrosilvopastoriles (amapa, caoba, cedro, guanacaste, melina, paulonia, primavera y teca) intercaladas al sorgo en un ecosistema costero salitroso. En un lote mixto, los mismos árboles más cuatro forrajeros: guaje, guajillo, cacahuananche y capomo asociados a las leguminosas herbáceas frijolillo y mucuna y pasto Guinea. El estudio se realizo en ejido Puerta de Mangos de Santiago Ixcuintla, Mexico. Se midieron las siguientes variables forestales: altura de planta y diámetro de tallo y copa, mientras que en las especies forrajeras: altura de las plantas y rendimiento de biomasa. Los resultados obtenidos para altura de planta en las especies maderables indican grupos diferenciados de mayor crecimiento (P>0,05) entre tratamientos. La diferencia grupal también se mostró en el diámetro de tallo y copa, altura de la primera rama y número de ramas y hojas. El sorgo obtuvo rendimiento inestable. Se atribuye al efecto desfavorable del agua saturada en suelo arcilloso con drenaje lento la extinción de primavera, prevalencia del barrenador de tallo en cedro y al crecimiento y producción restringida del grano de sorgo. La ubicación más baja del lote mixto provocó mayor pérdida de plantas maderables y la desaparición de paulonia y primavera. Igual aconteció con las leguminosas rastreras, con sólo vestigios del pasto. Excepto capomo, los otros árboles forrajeros toleraron encharcamiento. El rendimiento de biomasa del Guaje superó estadísticamente al resto, pero con diferencias productivas entre épocas.

Agroforestry systems in Latin Americas have been important, especially in Mexico. Nayarit has a great potential for the farming-forestry development, where woody species interact with traditional culture components (annual and perennial plant cultures, and animals) bringing in an integrated system. The objective was to evaluate the adaptation and development of eight agrosilvopastoral species (amapa, mahogany, cedar, guanacaste, melina, paulonia, primavera, and teak) intercropped with sorghum in a sandy coastal ecosystem. In a mixed plot, the same tree species plus four fodder trees: guaje, guajillo, cacahuananche, and capomo associated with two herbaceous legumes: frijolillo and mucuna, and guinea grass. Study was conducted at Puerta de Mangos de Santiago Ixcuintla, Mexico. The following forestry variables were measured: plant height and stem and crown diameter, while in the fodder plants, height and biomass yield were measured. The results obtained for plant height in the timber groups indicated differentiated groups of fastest growing (P>0.05) among treatments. The difference between groups also showed for stem diameter and cup, height to first branch, number of branches and leaves; Sorghum yield was unstable. It was attributed to the negative effect of water-saturated on low drainage clay soil the primavera extinction, prevalence of stem borer in cedar, and maturity and low yield of grain sorghum. The mixed plot located in a lower portion caused higher loss of timber trees and disappearing of paulonia and primavera. Same results occurred with the creeping legumes and grass. Except capomo, the other trees tolerated floods. Biomass yield of guaje surpassed statistically the rest, but with productive differences between seasons.

Se estudiaron genes candidatos para tamaño de la camada en 300 hembras porcinas Yorkshire-Landrace; ESR, PRLR, RBP4 y FUT1. Las hembras fueron agrupadas en dos niveles de producción (NP): nivel alto (NA) y nivel bajo (NB). Utilizando Ji cuadrado se analizaron las frecuencias génicas y genotípicas. Empleando análisis de varianza con un modelo de efectos mixtos, para lechones nacidos totales (LNT), nacidos vivos (LNV), peso de la camada al nacimiento (PNAC) y destete (PAJ21), lechones destetados (LD) y valor de cría de la progenie de la cerda (BVSP), se compararon las medias con contrastes ortogonales. Las hembras con alta productividad se asociaron con una mayor frecuencia del alelo B del gen ESR (P < 0,05). Las diferencias fueron de 0,4 LNV, 0,3 LD, 2,9 Kg de PAJ21 y 8,6 puntos de BVSP a favor del genotipo AB del gen ESR (P < 0,05) sin considerar el NP, no se detectaron animales homocigotos BB. Las frecuencias génicas y genotípicas del gen PRLR no se relacionaron con el NP (P > 0,05), no hubo diferencias (P > 0,05) entre los genotipos AA, AB y BB sin considerar el NP ni dentro del mismo NP. En el gen RBP4 la frecuencia del alelo A y del genotipo AA fue más alta en hembras con NA (P < 0,05), no se detectaron animales con genotipo BB. Las hembras con genotipos AA tuvieron más 0,5 LNT; 0,5 LNV; 0,6 Kg de PNAC; 2,6 Kg de PAJ21 y 3,2 puntos de BVSP que el genotipo AB (P < 0,05), sin considerar el NP. La frecuencia del alelo G y del genotipo GG del gen FUT1 fue mayor en el nivel de productividad alto (P < 0,05). El genotipo GG fue superior al genotipo AG con más 0,6 LNV; 0,8 Kg de PNAC; 3 Kg de PAJ21 y 3,9 puntos de BVSP (P < 0,05) sin considerar el NP

Candidate genes were studied for litter size in 300 sows Yorkshire-Landrace; ESR, PRLR, RBP4 y FUT1. The sows were grouped in two levels of production (LP): high level (HL) and low level (LL). Using Chi-Square test the alleles and genotypic frequencies were analyzed. Employing analysis of variance with an mixed model effects for the total number born (TNB), number of piglets born alive (NBA), number of piglets alive at weaning (NW), total weight of piglets born (WTNB), total weight of piglets alive at weaning (WNW) and breeding value sow productivity (BVSP). The means were compared by orthogonal contrasts. The sows with high production were associated with a higher frequency of B allele of ESR gene (P < 0.05). The differences were of 0.04 NBA, 0.3 NW, 2.9 WNW kg and 8.6 BVSP points to favor of AB genotype of ESR gene (P < 0.05) without considering the LP and no homozygous BB animal was detected. The alleles and genotypic frequencies of PRLR gene were not related with the LP (P > 0.05), did not have differences (P > 0.05) between the genotypes AA, AB and BB without considering the LP, neither within of same LP. In the RBP4 gene the frequency of A allele and the AA genotype was higher in sows with HL (P < 0.05), no homozygous BB animals were detected. The sows with AA genotype had 0.5 TNB, 0.5 NBA, 0.6 WTNB kg, 2.6 WNW kg and 3.2 BVSP points more than sows with AB genotype (P < 0.05), without considering the LP. The frequency of G allele and GG genotype of FUT1 gene was higher in the HL (P < 0.05). The GG genotype was higher than AG genotype with 0.6 TNB, 0.8 WTNB kg, 3.0 WNW kg and 3.9 BVSP points more (P < 0.05), without considering the LP
