RESUMO: Objetivou-se determinar dentre nove equações do ITU a que melhor representa os efeitos do estresse por calor para bezerros leiteiros mestiços criados em ambiente tropical. Foram avaliados 12 bezerros, machos e fêmeas, com idade de 20 a 60 dias, criados no bezerreiro tropical. As frequências respiratória (FR) e cardíaca (FC), as temperaturas retal (TR), corporal superficial (TCS), de bulbo seco (Tbs) e de bulbo úmido (Tbu) foram quantificadas pela manhã e tarde. Calcularam-se nove equações do ITU. Utilizou-se como critério de determinação da melhor equação do ITU, a maior correlação entre as variáveis fisiológicas com os ITUs. As médias das nove equações de ITU, Tbs, Tbu, Pv, Tpo, FR, FC, TR e TCS foram superiores pela tarde em comparação ao turno da manhã, enquanto que a UR teve comportamento inverso. Os maiores valores de temperatura retal foram observados em temperaturas acima de 26,4 °C e umidade inferior a 55,5%. As correlações entre Tbs e Pv com a FR (0,697 e 0,707), TR (0,703 e 0,706) e TCS (0,818 e 0,817) foram significativas e positivas, enquanto que as correlações da UR, com essas mesmas variáveis fisiológicas, foram significativas e negativas (-0,622, -0,590 e -0,638, respectivamente). O melhor índice foi o ITU calor sensível ( I T U = 3,43 + 1,058 x T d b - 0,293 x R H + 0,0164 x T d b x R H + 35,7), que se correlacionou significativamente com a frequência respiratória (r=0,668 e r²=0,446), frequência cardíaca (r=0,259 e r²=0,067), temperatura retal (r=0,693 e r²=0,479) e temperatura corporal superficial (r=0,807 e r²=0,650). Conclui-se que a equação do ITU calor sensível é a que melhor representa os efeitos do estresse por calor dos bezerros leiteiros mestiços em ambiente tropical.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine among nine temperature-humidity index (THI) equations, the one that best represents the effects of heat stress on crossbred dairy calves reared in a tropical environment. Twelve male and female calves, aged 20 to 60 days, and raised in a tropical pen were evaluated. Respiratory (RR) and heart rates (HR), rectal (RT), body surface (BST), dry bulb (Tdb) and wet bulb (Tbw) temperatures, partial vapor pressure (Pv), relative humidity (RH) and dew point temperature (Tpo) were quantified in the morning and afternoon. Nine THI equations were calculated. The highest correlation between physiological variables and this was used to select the best THI equation. Averages for nine THI equations, Tdb, Twb, Pv, Tdp, RR, HR, RT, and BST were higher in the afternoon than in the morning, whereas that for RH was the opposite. The highest values for RT occurred at temperatures above 26.4°C and when humidity was below 55.5%. The Tdb and Pv correlations with RR (0.697 and 0.707), RT (0.703 and 0.706) and BST (0.818 and 0.817) were significant and positive, whereas the RH correlations with the same physiological variables were significant and negative (-0.622, -0.590 and -0.638, respectively). The best index was the THI sensible heat-based ( T H I = 3.43 + 1.058 x T d b - 0.293 x R H + 0.0164 x T d b x R H + 35.7), which was significantly correlated with RR (r=0.668 and r²=0.446), HR (r=0.259 and r²=0.067), RT (r=0.693 and r²=0.479) and BST (r=0.807 and r²=0.650). In conclusion, the THI sensible heat-based equation best represents the effects of heat stress on crossbred dairy calves reared in a tropical environment.

ABSTRACT: Orthodontic cements have been used to enhance retention between the band and the crown, however, unfavorable properties found in many of these cements may contribute to cement failure between band and crown’s surface and leading to unsuccessful application of orthodontic forces. The aim of this study was to evaluate the shear strength of the Orthobite composite (FGM) using the Single Bond adhesive system (3M). The sample consisted of 30 bovine incisors divided in 2 groups (n=15). All teeth were submitted to prophylaxes with pumice stone and etching with phosphoric acid. In Group I the Orthobite was used conventionally. Group II was similar to Group I, however, the Single Bond adhesive system was applied after conditioning. The samples were stored in distilled water in incubator at 37 ºC for 24 h and submitted to the shear strength test at a speed of 0.5 mm/minute speed. Data were submitted to the Student T test (5 %). The results (MPa) showed no statistically significant differences between the groups, regardless of surface treatment. Thus, all groups exhibited adequate adhesive bond strength for clinical use.

RESUMEN: Los cementos ortodónticos se han utilizado para aumentar la retención entre la banda y la corona, sin embargo, las propiedades desfavorables encontradas en muchos de estos cementos pueden contribuir a la falla del cemento entre la superficie de la banda y la corona y llevar a la aplicación incorrecta de fuerzas de ortodoncia. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la resistencia al cizallamiento del compuesto Orthobite (FGM) utilizando el sistema adhesivo Single Bond (3M). La muestra consistió de 30 incisivos bovinos divididos en dos grupos (n = 15). Todos los dientes recibieron profilaxis con piedra pómez y acondicionamiento del esmalte con ácido fosfórico. En el Grupo I, se utilizó Orthobite de manera convencional. El Grupo II fue similar al I, pero se aplicó el sistema adhesivo Single Bond, después de acondicionamiento. Los cuerpos de prueba fueron almacenados en agua destilada en estufa a 37 ºC por 24 h y sometidos al ensayo de resistencia al cizallamiento, con velocidad de 0,5 mm por minuto. Los datos fueron sometidos a la prueba de T Student (5 %). Los resultados (en MPa) no mostraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre los grupos, independientemente del tratamiento de la superficie. De esta forma, todos los grupos presentaron resistencia adhesiva adecuada para uso clínico.

ABSTRACT The bacterial-halo-blight (Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae) is disseminated by the main coffee areas in the producing states of Brazil. On the other hand, the disease bacterial-leaf-spot (Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci) was reported only once in coffee seedlings in a sample collected in the State of São Paulo. In mid-2015, samples of coffee leaves with symptoms of foliar lesions surrounded by yellow halo, were collected in coffee plantations in the State of Paraná and fluorescent bacteria producing or not brown pigment in culture medium were isolated and determined as belonging to the Group I of P. syringae. Through biochemical, serological and pathogenicity tests, the pathogens were identified as P. syringae pv. garcae and P. syringae pv. tabaci, with prevalence of isolates belonging to pathovar tabaci and, as well as in certain samples, it was identified simultaneous infection by both etiological agents. Then, this is the first report of associated occurrence of garcae and tabaci pathovars of P. syringae and of the incidence of “bacterial-leaf-spot” under field conditions and in the State of Paraná.

Durante la sucesión secundaria forestal, el flujo de nutrientes en la hojarasca se incrementa significativamente. Los altos ingresos de materia orgánica y nutrientes a través de la hojarasca afecta positivamente la fertilidad del suelo y la composición de especies, las cuales son componentes esenciales para programas de restauración forestal y de manejo. En el presente estudio, el ingreso de nutrientes a través de la hojarasca y sus componentes fueron estimados para dos sitios de una selva lluviosa atlántica aluvial en sucesión temprana. La cantidad anual de elementos que ingresan al suelo desde la vegetación más desarrollada (sitios con alta área basal y abundancia de árboles) fueron (en kg/ha): 93 N, 79 Ca, 24 K, 15 Mg, 6 P, 1.7 Mn, 0.94 Fe, 0.18 Zn, 0.09 Cu y 11.2 Al. Menos de la mitad de esas cantidades fueron aportadas por la vegetación menos desarrollada, excepto para el Al. La cantidad de Al aportada a este sitio fue similar a la contribución de la vegetación más desarrollada, debido a la contribución de: Tibouchina pulchra (82% de todo el Al aportado). La eficiencia en el uso de nutrientes de la hojarasca (principalmente de N y P) de la vegetación menos desarrollada fue superior a la eficiencia de una más desarrollada, debido a la alta proporción de tres especies nativas dominantes (Myrsine coriacea, Tibouchina pulchra y Cecropia pachystachya) en la primera. Si bien la hojarasca de esas especies presenta menor concentración de nutrientes que las otras especies arbóreas, el flujo de nutrientes fue mayor (para ambos sitios), marcando una cierta independencia de los nutrientes esenciales del suelo. Las cantidades de esas especies deberían ser consideradas con mayor atención para su uso en programas de restauración forestal.

During forest succession, litterfall nutrient fluxes increase significantly. The higher inputs of organic matter and nutrients through litterfall affects positively soil fertility and the species composition, which are essential components in forest restoration and management programs. In the present study, the input of nutrients to the forest soil via litterfall components was estimated for two sites of different development stages, in an early successional alluvial rain forest in Brazil. Litterfall returned to the soil, in kg/ha, ca. 93 N, 79 Ca, 24 K, 15 Mg, 6 P, 1.7 Mn, 0.94 Fe, 0.18 Zn, 0.09 Cu and 11.2 Al, in the site where trees were more abundant and had higher values of basal area. In the other area, where trees where less abundant and values of basal area were comparatively low, litterfall returned <50% of those amounts to the forest soil, except for Al. The amount of Al that returned to the soil was similar in both areas due to the high contribution of Tibouchina pulchra (82% of Al returned). Comparatively, high proportion of three dominant native tree species (Myrsine coriacea, T. pulchra and Cecropia pachystachya) explained better litter nutrient use efficiency (mainly N and P) in the site with the least advanced successional stage. Although litterfall of these species show lower nutrient concentrations than the other tree species, their nutrient fluxes were high in both sites, indicating a certain independence from soil essential nutrients. A produção de serapilheira é uma das variáveis mais acessíveis para se estimar a produtividade primária, fluxos de nutrientes e transferências de carbono em ecossistemas terrestres. Padrões fenológicos e condições climáticas ainda não estão bem explicados para florestas tropicais e subtropicais sob climas com sazonalidade pouco pronunciada, muito menos a interação desses padrões com a dinâmica sucessional. A produção mensal de serapilheira foi estimada durante dois anos em uma Floresta Ombrófila Densa aluvial durante o nono e décimo ano de regeneração. O sítio com vegetação mais desenvolvida apresentou maior produção de serapilheira (6,4 ton ha-1 ano-1), quando comparado com o sítio com vegetação menos desenvolvida (3,0 ton ha-1 ano-1). As produções mensais de 11 frações de serapilheira foram correlacionadas com variáveis meteorológicas possibilitando identificar três padrões de deposição. O padrão principal, dominado por espécies sempre verdes, consistiu em um ciclo anual com maior produção de serapilheira no início da estação quente e chuvosa (primavera), precedendo aproximadamente três meses os picos dos ciclos de temperatura e de precipitação pluviométrica. Para os outros dois padrões, dominados por espécies breve-decíduas, os picos de produção ocorreram no final da estação chuvosa (verão) e no final da estação com menor precipitação pluviométrica (inverno). Florestas tropicais e subtropicais com sazonalidade marcante (períodos secos) possivelmente apresentam maior deposição de folhas mais cedo que florestas úmidas (como os sítios estudados) devido ao início do processo de senescência foliar. Tal processo parece ser desencadeado mais cedo por um estresse hídrico mais severo, além de outros fatores ligados à menor atividade fisiológica das plantas que resultam na abscisão.

Above-ground litter production is one of the most accessible ways to estimate ecosystem productivity, nutrient fluxes and carbon transfers. Phenological patterns and climatic conditions are still not fully explained well for tropical and subtropical forests under less pronounced dry season and non-seasonal climates, as well as the interaction of these patterns with successional dynamics. Monthly litterfall was estimated for two years in a 9 to 10 year old secondary alluvial Atlantic Rain forest. Total litterfall was higher in the site with more developed vegetation (6.4 ± 1.2 ton ha-1 year-1; 95% confidence interval) as compared to the site with less developed vegetation (3.0 ± 1.0 ton ha-1 year-1). The monthly production of 11 litter fractions (eight fractions comprising the leaf litter of the seven main species of the community and other species; reproductive parts, twigs £ 2 cm diameter, and miscellaneous material) were correlated with meteorological variables making possible to identify three patterns of deposition. The main pattern, dominated by leaf-exchanging species, consisted of a cycle with the highest litterfall at the beginning of the rainy season, preceding by basically three months the peaks of the annual cycles of rainfall and temperatures. Other two patterns, dominated by brevi-deciduous species, peaked at the end of the rainy season and at the end of the non-rainy season. Tropical and subtropical dry forests that present the highest leaf fall gradually earlier than rain forests (as the studied sites) are possibly related to the start of senescence process. It seems that such process is triggered earlier by a more severe hydric stress, besides other factors linked to a minor physiological activity of plants that result in abscission.
