ABSTRACT The production chain of the macauba palm (Acrocomia aculeata) includes the cosmetics, food and bioenergy sectors, which highlights the relevance of defining bioclimatically favorable areas for the cultivation of this plant in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the center of its origin. The mesoregions of this state were characterized according to the average annual temperature (AMT), annual precipitation (AP), precipitation in the driest quarter (PDQ), and aridity index (AI), following the Boolean logic. A total of 45.18% of the area of this state is bioclimatically favorable for the cultivation of A. aculeata, which facilitates the planning of farming activities, conservation, and management of this plant in other regions with conditions similar to those observed in this state. This palm can also be cultivated with irrigation in regions with adequate bioclimatic conditions, but without adequate rainfall pattern. This information can boost the rational and sustainable use of A. aculeata for the production of green vegetable oil.

RESUMO A cadeia produtiva da palmeira macaúba (Acrocomia aculeata) inclui os setores de cosméticos, alimentos e bioenergia, aumentando a importância de se definir as áreas bioclimaticamente favoráveis para o cultivo dessa planta no estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil, centro de sua origem. As mesorregiões desse estado foram caracterizadas de acordo com a temperatura média anual (TMA), precipitação anual (PA), precipitação no trimestre mais seco (PTS) e índice de aridez (IA), seguindo a lógica booleana. Um total de 45,18% da área do estado de Minas Gerais é, bioclimaticamente, favorável ao cultivo da A. aculeata, facilitando o planejamento de atividades agropecuárias, conservação e manejo dessa planta. Essa palmeira pode, também, ser cultivada com irrigação em regiões com déficit de precipitação, mas com as outras condições bioclimáticas semelhantes às definidas nesse estado para essa planta. Essas informações aumentam as possibilidades do uso racional e sustentável de A. aculeata para produção de óleo vegetal verde.

ABSTRACT. Macauba fruits are oil-rich drupes with high moisture content at harvest. This feature can affect the chemical properties of the oil and increase the costs of biodiesel production. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt postharvest strategies to ensure oil quality. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of drying macauba fruit on the quality of the pulp oil. Husked and dehusked fruits were dried at 60°C and then stored. At 0, 15, 45, 100, and 180 days after storage, fruit samples were retrieved, and the oil from the pulp was evaluated for physicochemical parameters. The removal of the husk from the fruits considerably reduced the drying time compared to that of the husked fruits. Drying prevented deterioration of the fruit even after 180 days of storage, regardless of the presence of the husk. The drying process allowed for efficient storage of the macauba fruit while maintaining low levels of oil acidity. Furthermore, the oxidative stability of the pulp oil from the dehusked dried fruits lasted longer than that from the husked dried fruits. Therefore, drying is a viable alternative for the postharvest of macauba fruits to maintain the quality of the oil for biodiesel production.

RESUMO: Considerando o grande potencial oleaginoso da macauba e a sua aplicabilidade nos setores energéticos e industriais, torna-se indispensável o conhecimento das condições adequadas de armazenamento das sementes, garantindo a manutenção da viabilidade. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do teor de água da semente e das condições de armazenamento (temperatura, umidade relativa do ar e embalagem) sobre a qualidade das sementes, oriundas de Minas Gerais, durante 12 meses. O experimento foi realizado através de dois ensaios: no primeiro, as sementes foram armazenadas sob três faixas de umidade, 4,0≤6,0%; 6,0≤8,0% e 8,0≤10,0%, em embalagens impermeáveis, em temperatura ambiente e a 10°C. No segundo, as sementes foram acondicionadas em três tipos de embalagem: a) permeável; b) semipermeável; e c) impermeável. Foram comparadas três condições de armazenamento: a) temperatura e UR ambientes, em condição de laboratório; b) 15ºC e 45% UR; c) 20ºC e 55% UR. Avaliou-se o teor de água, a taxa de germinação e o índice de velocidade de germinação aos 0, 4, 8 e 12 meses de armazenamento. A faixa de umidade de 6,0≤8,0% em temperatura ambiente possibilitou a melhor conservação das sementes durante os 12 meses de armazenamento. Porém, as sementes não sobreviveram em temperatura de 10°C, independente dos teores de umidade. O teor de água de 5,9% e os ambientes de armazenamento de 15°C/45% UR e 20°C/55% UR, independente do tipo de embalagem, apresentaram os melhores resultados ao longo do armazenamento. Dessa forma, as sementes de macauba podem ser classificadas como sementes intermediárias.

ABSTRACT: Macauba palm stands out for having favorable features to biodiesel production such as the high oil content of its fruit. Considering the great potential of the species and their applicability in the renewable energy field, it becomes indispensable to establish the right conditions for storing the seeds for propagation purpose. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of seed moisture content, packaging, and storage conditions such as temperature and relative humidity on the quality of seeds from Minas Gerais State, during a 12-month storage period. The research had two independent assays: (I) the seeds were stored with three moisture contents/ranges 4.0≤6.0%; 6.0≤8.0% and 8.0≤10.0% in impermeable packages, under room temperature and at 10ºC; (II) seeds with approximately 5.9% of moisture content were stored in three different types of packages: a) permeable, b) semi-permeable and c) impermeable. Three storing conditions were tested: a) room temperature and RH under laboratory conditions; b) 15ºC and 45% RH; c) 20ºC and 55% RH. Water content, germination rate and germination speed index were evaluated at 0, 4, 8 and 12 months of storing. The best germination results were obtained with the moisture range of 6.0≤8.0%, with seeds kept at room temperature; while the seeds stored at 10ºC, regardless the moisture range, did not survive. The stored seeds with 5.9% moisture content and at both 15ºC/45%RH and 20ºC/55% RH conditions, independently of the package type used, showed the best results. Thus, macaw palm seeds can be classified as intermediates seeds.

Resumo A fitorremediação que consiste na utilização de plantas para remoção de íons, tem aumentado nas últimas décadas, tendo em vista a busca por tecnologias de baixo custo para mitigar áreas contaminadas. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o potencial das macrófitas aquáticas: Azolla caroliniana Willd, Salvinia minima Baker (Salviniaceae) e Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleiden (Araceae) em acumular manganês (Mn), um elemento que em concentração elevada pode ser tóxico para população humana. As três espécies acumularam Mn em seus tecidos e a absorção foi dependente da concentração do metal em solução. Spirodela polyrhiza acumulou as concentrações mais elevadas de Mn (17,062 mg g-1 MS), seguida por S. minima (4,283 mg g-1 MS) e A. caroliniana (1,341 mg g-1 MS). O excesso de Mn causou redução do conteúdo de clorofila total nas três espécies. O conteúdo de carotenóides diminuiu em A. caroliniana (27,02 %) e S. polyrhiza (25,34 %). Apenas em S. polyrhiza o crescimento foi reduzido significativamente (21,34%). As espécies A. caroliniana e S. minima toleraram excessos de Mn, mas foram ineficientes no acúmulo de concentrações elevadas do metal. O elevado conteúdo de Mn acumulado nos tecidos de S. polyrhiza sugere que a espécie possui capacidade para acumular este elemento. Portanto, apresenta potencial para ser utilizada na fitorremediação e oferece um novo recurso para explorar os mecanismos de acúmulo do Mn.

Abstract The phytoremediation technique, which consists of using plants to remove ions, has been increasingly chosen over past decades due to its low-cost technology to mitigate contaminated areas. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of the aquatic macrophytes, Azolla caroliniana Willd, Salvinia minima Baker and Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleiden, to accumulate manganese (Mn), an element which, at high concentrations, may be toxic to human populations. The three species accumulated Mn in their tissues and the absorption was independent of the metal concentration in the solution. Spirodela polyrhiza accumulated Mn at higher concentrations of the ion (17.062 mg g-1 MS), followed by S. minima (4.283 mg g-1 MS) and A. caroliniana (1.341 mg g-1 MS). Manganese excess reduced total chlorophyll content in all three species. Carotenoid content was reduced in A. caroliniana (27.02 %) and S. polyrhiza (25.34 %). Growth was only significantly reduced (21.34%) in S. polyrhiza. The species A. caroliniana and S. minima were able to tolerate excess Mn, but were inefficient regarding the accumulation of high concentrations of the metal. High accumulated Mn content in the tissues of S. polyrhiza suggests that the species is able to accumulate this element. Therefore, it has potential for use in phytoremediation and provides a new resource for exploring the Mn accumulation mechanism.
