Abstract The original sin of anthropology was to divide the world into civilized and savage. The social systems of all those other peoples supposedly rested upon a foundation of blood relationships. Anthropologists therefore became at once the experts on the primitive and on kinship. In the 1970s Western kinship systems began to undergo radical change. Simultaneously, the old orthodoxies about kinship crumbled in anthropology. Young ethnographers generally lost interest in the topic. Kinship systems have nevertheless not gone away, out there in the world. But to understand them we must first abandon the opposition between the modern and the traditional, the West and the Rest.

Resumen El pecado original de la antropología fue dividir al mundo en civilizados y salvajes. Los sistemas sociales de todos aquellos Otros, supuestamente descansaban sobre la base de las relaciones consanguíneas y, por ello, los antropólogos se convirtieron de inmediato en expertos en estudios relacionados con grupos primitivos y en torno al tema del parentesco. Sin embargo, en la década de 1970, los sistemas occidentales de parentesco comenzaron a sufrir un cambio radical. Simultáneamente, las antiguas ortodoxias sobre el parentesco se derrumbaron en el campo de la antropología y los jóvenes etnógrafos en general perdieron interés en el tema. Pese a esto, los sistemas de parentesco no desaparecieron en el mundo y para entenderlos tendríamos primero que abandonar la postura sustentada en la oposición entre lo moderno y lo tradicional, el Occidente y el Resto.

Taking its inspiration from an analysis of the books Radical hope: ethics in the face of cultural devastation, by Jonathan Lear, and Plenty-Coups: chief of the Crows, by Frank Bird Linderman, this article explores the now commonplace notion of "cultural loss".

O autor analisa os usos que certos movimentos sociais e políticos fazem de antigos conceitos antropológicos, mostrando como estes grupos interpretam e se apropriam de algumas teorias antropológicas. Discussões acerca dos direitos de minorias étnicas, sejam elas feitas no âmbito de uma nação ou numa assembléia das Nações Unidas, fundamentam algumas políticas nacionais e internacionais. O autor salienta a importância de se ter clareza acerca de quais conceitos e teorias estão sendo empregados nestas discussões - conceitos como nativo ou indígena, hoje eufemismos para o primitivo, civilização ou cultura, às vezes empregados em outros tempos no lugar de raça, e teorias como a do evolucionismo. Para exemplificar as apropriações conceituais empregadas por movimentos sociais, o autor analisa os movimentos de povos ditos caçadores-coletores, como os Inuit no norte do Canadá e os Bushmen no sul do continente africano.

The author analyzes the uses that certain social and political organizations make of old anthropological concepts, demonstrating how these groups interpret certain anthropological theories, taking them for themselves. Debates on the rights of ethnic groups and other minorities, at a national level or in the United Nations, are at the base of certain national and international politics. Therefore, the author points out, it is important to clarify which concepts and which theories are being used in those discussions - concepts such as native or indigineous, current euphemisms for the out-dated primitive, civilization or culture, sometimes used interchangeably with race at other times, and theories such as evolutionism. In order to exemplify how different social movements make use of these concepts, the author analyses those political groups who defend the so called foragers and hunters, such as the Inuit in northern Canada or the Bushmen in the south of Africa.
