Resumen. El Síndrome Respiratorio y Reproductivo del Cerdo (PRRS) es una enfermedad endémica en porcinos que tiende a la cronicidad. Los esfuerzos se centran en prevención y control para minimizar el daño, pues no existe tratamiento. Se evaluó el efecto de la adición de ácido docosahexaenoico (DHA) y oleorresina de cúrcuma y capsicum (EP, extractos de plantas) en la alimentación de cerdas reproductoras afectadas con PRRS sobre su desempeño productivo, de salud y en su progenie. Cuarenta y ocho cerdas de primer parto se distribuyeron al azar en cuatro tratamientos (Tr1, testigo; Tr2, DHA; Tr3, EP; Tr4, DHA+EP). El ensayo con el segundo parto siguió el mismo diseño. Tr3 y Tr4 obtuvieron más peso de lechones al nacer en ambos partos (P < 0.05) que los demás. En ambos partos, la adición de DHA y EP resultó en menos cantidad de momias (P < 0.05) y menor costo que los otros tratamientos. Tr3 tuvo mayor número de lechones vivos en ambos partos, mientras que Tr4 solo en el segundo parto (P < 0.05). En el primer parto, se destetaron más lechones en Tr2 y Tr3 (P > 0.05); pero Tr2 superó a los demás en el segundo parto (P > 0.05). Por ELISA, todos los cerdos desarrollaron anticuerpos contra PRRS. Los grupos que recibieron DHA y/o EP tuvieron concentraciones séricas de IgG superiores al testigo (P < 0.05). Se concluye que la adición de DHA y EP mejora la respuesta productiva y mayores concentraciones de IgG en ambos partos, además de reducir el costo de producción de las cerdas.

Abstract. Pig Respiratory and Reproductive Syndrome (PRRS) is an endemic disease in pigs that tends to become chronic. Efforts are focused on prevention and control to minimize damage, as no treatment exists. The effect of adding docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and turmeric oleoresin and capsicum (plant extracts, PE) in the feeding of breeding sows affected with PRRS on their productive performance, health and progeny was evaluated. Forty-eight first-parturition shows were randomly distributed into four treatments (Tr1, control; Tr2, DHA; Tr3, PE; Tr4, DHA+PE). The second parturition assay followed the same design. Tr3 and Tr4 got more piglet weight at birth in both parturitions (P < 0.05) than the others. In both deliveries, the addition of DHA and PE resulted in fewer mummies (P < 0.05) and lower cost than the other treatments. Tr3 had a higher number of live piglets in both parturitions, while Tr4 only got that in the second parturition (P < 0.05). More piglets were weaned in Tr2 and Tr3 (P > 0.05) in the first parturition; but Tr2 outperformed the others in the second parturition (P > 0.05). By ELISA, all pigs developed antibodies against PRRS. The groups receiving DHA and/or PE had higher serum IgG concentrations than control (P < 0.05). It is concluded that the addition of DHA and PE improves the productive response and induced higher concentrations of IgG in both parturitions, in addition to reducing the production cost of sows.

RESUMEN: Las arterias sigmoideas son ramas de la arteria mesentérica inferior e irrigan al colon sigmoideo. Se originan del tronco de las arterias sigmoideas. Esta es la descripción más frecuente según los autores consultados. El objetivo fue analizar las variaciones en el origen y distribución de las arterias sigmoideas mediante disección. Se utilizaron 13 preparados cadavéricos formolizados al 10 %. Se disecó la cavidad abdominal para identificar a las arterias sigmoideas. Se evidenció su bifurcación paralela al colon sigmoideo. Se lo delimitó mediante reparos palpables. Patrón I: 4 casos (30,8 %). Variante de la arcada sigmoidea como rama colateral de la arteria mesentérica inferior. Tipo Ia: 1 caso (25 %). Sin asociaciones. Tipo Ib: 1 caso (25 %). Asociada al tronco sigmoideo. Tipo Ic: 2 casos (50 %). Asociada a arterias sigmoideas accesorias. Patrón II: 6 casos (46,2 %). Variante del tronco común entre arteria cólica izquierda y arterias destinadas al colon sigmoideo. Tipo IIa: 3 casos (50 %). Sin asociaciones. Tipo IIb: 2 casos (33,3 %). Asociado al tronco sigmoideo. Tipo IIc: 1 caso (16,7 %). Asociado a arterias sigmoideas accesorias. Patrón III: 3 casos (23 %). Variante clásica. Se definió por la ausencia del tronco común con la arteria cólica izquierda y de la arcada sigmoidea. Tipo IIIa: 2 casos (66,7 %). Un número variable de arterias sigmoideas nacen como ramas colaterales de la arteria mesentérica inferior, sin asociarse al tronco sigmoideo. Tipo IIIb: 1 caso (33,3 %). La arteria cólica izquierda emite como rama colateral la primera arteria sigmoidea y se asocia al tronco sigmoideo. 1. El patrón II es el prevalente en este trabajo (46,2 %). 2. La variante clásica no es la predominante en esta investigación (23 %). 3. La arcada sigmoidea tiene 53,8 % de incidencia.

SUMMARY: The sigmoid arteries are branches of the inferior mesenteric artery and supply the sigmoid colon. They originate from the trunk of the sigmoids. This is the most frequent description according to the consulted authors. The objective is to analyze the variations in the origin and distribution of the sigmoid arteries through dissection. 13 cadaveric preparations formalized at 10 % and instruments were used. The abdominal cavity was dissected to identify the sigmoid arteries. Its bifurcation parallel to the sigmoid colon is evident. It is delimited by palpable repairs. Pattern I: 4 cases (30.8 %). It was defined by the absence of the common trunk with the left colic artery and the sigmoid arcade. Type IIIa: 2 cases (66.7 %). A variable number of sigmoid arteries arise as collateral branches of the inferior mesenteric artery, without being associated with the sigmoid trunk. Type IIIb: 1 case (33.3 %). The left colic artery gives off the first sigmoid artery as a collateral branch and is associated with the sigmoid trunk. 1. Pattern II is the most prevalent in this study (46.2 %). 2. The classic variant is not the predominant one in this research (23 %). 3. The sigmoid arcade has a 53.8 % incidence.

Ti-34Nb-6Sn alloy were prepare by powder metallurgy milled in two different times (40 and 60 min) using Ti and Nb hydrides with or without Mg, as spacer then sintered at 700ºC and 800ºC. Characterizations were made by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and by Archimedes. Microhardness was measured by Vickers microhardness. Mesenchymal stem cells derived from equine bone marrow (BMMSCs) were used to evaluate the sample cytotoxicity. Hydration and dehydration process was confirmed, also the formation of brittle particles during the milling. Materials were structured under α and β phase, and the samples that received Mg as a spacer had slightly lower β phase content compared to samples without Mg, suggesting difficult α→β transformation due to the presence of barriers formed by pores. Mg provided greater porosity, and prepared milled in a shorter time promoted an increase in the macropores. Microhardness was similar to that of commercial materials (i.e., CP-Ti and also to other alloys with similar nominal composition. Cells treated with conditioned medium with the samples showed viability comparable to the control group, and after 48 h of culture on the samples, there was significant growth and more circular morphology, when adhered on materials that received Mg.

Abstract Bay snook (Petenia splendida) is a carnivorous cichlid species with excellent economic value in Southeast Mexico. Although this species presents an excellent potential for commercial aquaculture, the information about its nutritional, physiological, and reproductive metabolic pathways is meager. The current study focuses on the expression of glucose transporter 2 (glut2) in embryos and larvae at 5, 10, 15-, 20-, 25-, and 30-days post-hatch (dph) and in the liver, intestine, kidney, muscle, heart, testicle, gill, stomach, pancreas, and brain of adult fish. The partial sequence of glut2 was obtained, and specific qPCR primers were designed. In embryos, the expression was lower compared to larvae at 5, 15, and 20 dph. The highest expression in larvae occurred at 20 dph and the lowest at 25 and 30 dph. Maximum expression levels in adults occurred in the liver and intestine. Our results show that glut2 is expressed differentially across tissues of adult bay snook, and it fluctuates during larval development.

Resumen La mojarra tenguayaca (Petenia splendida) es una especie de cíclido carnívoro con excelente valor comercial en el sureste de México. A pesar de su potencial para la acuicultura, existe muy poca información sobre sus rutas metabólicas relacionadas con su nutrición, fisiología y reproducción. El presente estudio se enfoca en la expresión del transportador de glucosa (glut2) en embriones y larvas de 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 y 30 días post eclosión (dph) y en el hígado, intestino, riñón, músculo, corazón, testículo, branquias, estómago, páncreas y cerebro en peces adultos. Se diseñaron cebadores de qPCR específicos para glut2. La expresión en los embriones fue menor que en larvas a los 5, 15 y 20 dph. La expresión máxima en larvas se observó a los 20 dph y la mínima a los 25 y 30 dph. La expresión más alta en los adultos ocurrió en el hígado y el intestino. Nuestros resultados muestran que el gen glut2 se expresa de manera diferencial en los tejidos de adultos de la mojarra tenguayaca y su expresión fluctúa durante el desarrollo larvario.

Abstract Individuals with malignancies and COVID-19 have a lower survival compared with the general population. However, the information about the impact of COVID-19 on the whole hematological population is scarce. We aimed to describe the 30th day overall survival (OS) after COVID-19 infection in pa tients with a hematological disease in Argentina. A completely anonymous survey from the Argentine Society of Hematology was delivered to all the hematologists in Argentina; it started in April 2020. A cut-off to analyze the data was performed in December 2020 and, finally, 419 patients were reported and suitable for the analysis (average age: 58 years, 90% with malignant diseases). After the COVID-19 diagnosis, the 30-day OS for the whole population was 80.2%. From the entire group (419), 101 (24.1%) individuals required intensive care unit admission, where the 30-day OS was 46.6%. Among allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients, the 30-day OS was 70.3%. Factors associated with a low OS were two or more comorbidities, an active hematological disease and history of chemotherapy. In individuals with the three factors, the 30-day OS was 49.6% while the 30-day OS in those without those factors was 100%. Patients with hematological diseases have a higher mortality than the general population. This group represents a challenge and requires careful decision-making of the treatment in order not to compromise the chances of cure.

Resumen El presente estudio tuvo por objetivo primario conocer la mortalidad de pacientes con enfermedad hematológica que presentaron infección por COVID-19 en Argentina. Para ello se difundió una encuesta desde la Sociedad Argentina de Hematología (SAH) entre los hematológos para informar sobre los pacientes con enfermedades hematológicas y diagnóstico de infección por SARS- CoV-2, entre el 19/4/2020, y el 7/12/2020. Se incluyeron individuos de todas las edades con diagnóstico de enfermedad hematológica benigna o maligna e infección por SARS-CoV-2 confirmada por técnica de RT-PCR. Se analizaron 419 pacientes (mediana 58 años; 90% enfermedades malignas). La supervivencia al día 30 fue de 80.2%. La supervivencia fue menor en aquellos que requirieron internación (74.2%), cuidados intensivos (46.6%) y asistencia respiratoria mecánica (36.8%). Entre los trasplantados alogénicos la supervivencia fue 70.3%. Los factores vinculados a la supervivencia global fueron las comorbilidades, el estado de la enfermedad al momento de la infección y el antecedente de quimioterapia. Se pudo establecer un score en el que aquellos que tuvieron un puntaje de 4 alcanzaron una supervivencia del 49.6% al día 30, mientras que la de los pacientes con score 0 fue del 100% a 30 días. En comparación con la población general, los pacientes con enfermedades hematológicas presentan una mayor mortalidad vinculada al COVID-19, motivo por el cual es primordial definir pautas destinadas a disminuir la exposición de los mismos sin comprometer las posibilidades de beneficiarse del tratamiento de la enfermedad de base.

ABSTRACT Pacific red snapper (Lutjanus peru) is an important commercial species in Mexico with great aquaculture potential; however, digestive physiology is still unknown. Therefore, the objective of the present work was to characterize the digestive proteases of L. peru juvenile using biochemical and electrophoretic techniques. Results showed a higher acid protease activity than the alkaline proteases, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and leucine aminopeptidase (LAP). The optimum temperature for acid proteases was between 30 to 40°C. Trypsin activity showed two maximum peaks of temperature (30 and 50°C), while alkaline proteases, chymotrypsin, and LAP had optimum temperatures of 50, 50 to 60, and 40°C, respectively. Moreover, the optimum pH of acid proteases was between 2 and 3. Also, alkaline proteases, trypsin, chymotrypsin showed pH optimums at pH 6, 9, and 5, respectively, although LAP showed two optimum pH values at 6 and 9. Acid protease zymogram showed three isoforms, totally inhibited by pepstatin A. Alkaline protease zymogram revealed six bands (125.4, 67.2, 57.9, 48.6, 29.8, and 26.9 kDa), which were inhibited by specific serine-proteases and metalloproteases inhibitors. In conclusion, the main digestion in L. peru depends on stomach proteases, which are characteristic of carnivorous fish, followed by intestinal digestion supported mainly by chymotrypsin.

SUMMARY: The superficial palmar arch (SPA) is formed by the union of the ulnar artery and the superficial palmar branch of the radial artery. From its convexity four branches emerge, known as the common palmar digital arteries. We propose to carry out a review of the description of the SPA in contrast to the dissections carried out. Sixty-one hands were dissected and studied. Analysis of the SPA: Classic variant of the SPA: 23 cases (37.7 %). Nonclassic variant of the SPA: 15 cases (24.6 %). Type A: 13 cases (86.7 %). Anastomosis between the ulnar artery and the first dorsal metacarpal artery. Type B: 2 cases (13.3 %). Anastomosis between the ulnar artery and the satellite artery of the median nerve. Absence of the arch: 23 cases (37.7 %) Type A: 19 cases (82.6 %). The ulnar artery is the only one present in the plane of the SPA. Type B: 3 cases (13 %). The ulnar artery and the superficial palmar branch of the radial artery are in the plane of the superficial palmar arch, there is no anastomosis between them. Type C: 1 case (4.4 %). The ulnar artery and the satellite artery for the median nerve are in the plane of the SPA, there is no anastomosis between them. Analysis of the fifth common palmar digital artery: The fifth common palmar digital artery originates from the different variants in 41 cases (67.2 %). Based on the results, we recommend at the time of dissecting consider that: The classic variant is not the most frequent to find. The absence of the arch is verified in the same percentage rate as the classic variant. Even when the SPA is present, the percentage rate of the non-classic variant is significant. The fifth common palmar digital artery is a constant collateral branch of the superficial palmar arch.

RESUMEN: El arco palmar superficial (APS) resulta de la unión de la arteria ulnar y la rama palmar superficial de la arteria radial. Por su convexidad nacen las arterias digitales comunes. Esta descripción es la única que distintos autores han tomado como válida, por lo que se espera encontrarla durante la disección con mayor frecuencia. Esto no ha sido verificado en nuestra experiencia. Nos proponemos llevar a cabo una revisión de la descripción del APS poniéndolo en contraposición con las disecciones realizadas. Se disecaron y analizaron 61 manos cadavéricas. Estudio del arco palmar superficial: Variante clásica del APS: 23 casos (37,7 %). Variante no clásica del APS: 15 casos (24,6 %). Tipo A: 13 casos (86,7 %). Anastomosis entre arterias ulnar y metacarpiana dorsal del primer espacio. Tipo B: 2 casos (13,3 %). Anastomosis entre arterias ulnar y satélite del nervio mediano. Ausencia del arco: 23 casos (37,7 %) Tipo A: 19 casos (82,6 %). La arteria ulnar es la única estructura en el plano del APS. Tipo B: 3 casos (13 %). La arteria ulnar y la rama palmar superficial de la arteria radial están en el plano del APS sin anastomosarse entre sí. Tipo C: 1 caso (4,4 %). La arteria ulnar y la satélite del nervio mediano están en el plano del APS sin anastomosarse. Estudio de la quinta arteria digital palmar común: La quinta arteria digital palmar común se originó de las distintas variantes en 41 casos (67,2 %). Recomendamos al momento de la disección considerar que: la variante clásica no es la más frecuente de hallar; la ausencia del arco se verifica en el mismo porcentaje que la variante clásica; incluso cuando se comprueba la presencia del APS, el porcentaje de la variante no clásica es contundente; la quinta arteria digital palmar común es una rama colateral constante del APS.

Es necesario reflexionar sobre los significados sociales, culturales, educativos y simbólicos de la experiencia de la maternidad y paternidad entre los jóvenes y conocer cuáles son sus preocupaciones, desafíos, ansiedades y temores. Objetivo: Analizar las percepciones de los estudiantes universitarios sobre la maternidad y la paternidad. Metodología: Investigación cuantitativa y exploratoria. Se utilizó un cuestionario sobre la maternidad y paternidad como instrumento para la recopilación de datos. Los datos se analizaron mediante el programa IBM SPSS Statistics, versión 24.0. Resultados: Se aplicaron un total de 389 cuestionarios y, al analizarlos, las preguntas relacionadas con los factores económicos son la principal preocupación de los estudiantes (el 93,2%) y se muestran indiferentes en cuanto al apoyo institucional ofrecido durante el periodo de graduación. En cuanto a los aspectos de la maternidad y paternidad que preocupan a los estudiantes, cuando se relacionan con el género del participante, los factores económicos (p = 0,090) y su desarrollo personal o profesional (p = 0,020) tuvieron resultados significativos. Las otras correlaciones no fueron estadísticamente significativas. Conclusión: Es necesaria la coordinación entre los diversos sectores involucrados en la maternidad y la paternidad para educar y empoderar a los estudiantes universitarios en la planificación de estrategias como factor de protección de la salud.

Enquadramento: É necessário refletir sobre os significados sociais, culturais, educacionais e simbólicos da experiência da maternidade e paternidade entre jovens e saber quais são as suas preocupações, desafios, ansiedades e medos. Objetivo: Analisar as perceções de universitários acerca da maternidade e paternidade. Metodologia: Pesquisa quantitativa, exploratória. Utilizou-se um questionário sobre maternidade e paternidade como instrumento de colheita de dados. Os dados foram analisados com recurso ao software IBM SPSS Statistics, versão 24.0. Resultado: Foram aplicados 389 questionários, ao analisá-los, as questões relacionadas a aspetos económicos são a principal preocupação dos estudantes, 93,2% e estes são indiferentes ao apoio institucional oferecido durante o período de graduação. Quanto aos aspetos da maternidade e paternidade que preocupam estes estudantes, quando relacionados com o sexo do participante, tiveram resultados significativos os fatores económicos (p = 0,090) e o seu desenvolvimento pessoal ou profissional (p = 0,020). As demais correlações não foram estatisticamente significativas. Conclusão: Nota-se uma necessidade de articulação entre diversos setores envolvidos na maternidade e paternidade a fim de educar e empoderar os universitários para estratégias de planeamento como fator de proteção à saúde.

Background: It is necessary to reflect on the social, cultural, educational, and symbolic meanings of the experience of motherhood and fatherhood among young people and to know their concerns, challenges, anxieties, and fears. Objective: To analyze young university students' perceptions of motherhood and fatherhood. Methodology: Quantitative, exploratory research. Data were collected using a questionnaire on motherhood and fatherhood and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics, version 24.0. Results: A total of 389 questionnaires were applied. The analysis showed that students are mainly concerned with the economic issues (93.2%) and indifferent to the institutional support offered during their undergraduate studies. With regard to the most worrying aspects of motherhood and fatherhood, statistically significant associations were found between gender and economic factors (p = 0.090) and personal or professional development (p = 0.020). No other statistically significant associations were found. Conclusion: There is a need for coordination among the various sectors involved in motherhood and fatherhood in order to educate and empower university students for planning strategies as a health protection factor.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The practice of medicine frequently faces the management of female patients with uncomplicated urinary tract infection, in which an empirical treatment for Escherichia coli is needed, based on the identification of the so-called first-line antibiotics for this germ and in the knowledge of local resistance to them. Objectives: To analyze the texts of Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Microbiology, international guidelines and other recent publications to identify the following antibiotics as those of first line for the treatment of uncomplicated acute cystitis in women: nitrofurantoin, fosfomycin, cotrimoxazole (trimethoprim -sulfamethoxazole) and pivmecillinam. Results: Of the above mentioned antibiotics, only nitrofurantoin and cotrimoxazole are available in Paraguay. In a study we recently published it was found that the resistance of E. coli to nitrofurantoin was 4% and to cotrimoxazole 35%. Conclusion: Of the antibiotics considered as of first line for the empirical treatment of uncomplicated acute cystitis in women, only nitrofurantoin and cotrimoxazole are available in the country, being low (4%) the local resistance of E. coli to nitrofurantoin and high (35%) to cotrimoxazole.

RESUMEN Introducción: la práctica de la Medicina enfrenta frecuentemente al manejo de pacientes del sexo femenino con infección de vías urinarias no complicada, en las que se necesita iniciar un tratamiento empírico para Escherichia coli, basado en la identificación de los llamados antibióticos de primera línea para dicho germen y en el conocimiento de la resistencia local a los mismos. Objetivos: analizar los textos de Medicina Interna, Nefrología, Microbiología, guías internacionales y otras publicaciones recientes para identificar los antibióticos como los de primera línea para el tratamiento de la cistitis aguda no complicada en la mujer: nitrofurantoína, fosfomicina, cotrimoxazol (trimetoprim-sulfametoxazol) y pivmecillinam. Resultados: de los antibióticos mencionados sólo están disponibles en el país la nitrofurantoína y el cotrimoxazol. En un estudio que hemos publicado recientemente se encontró que la resistencia de Escherichia coli a la nitrofurantoína fue 4% y al cotrimoxazol fue del 35%. Conclusión: de los antibióticos considerados de primera línea para el tratamiento empírico de la cistitis aguda no complicada en la mujer, solo tenemos disponible en el país la nitrofurantoína y el cotrimoxazol, siendo baja (4%) la resistencia local de Escherichia coli a la nitrofurantoina y elevada (35%) al cotrimoxazol.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade de bactérias probióticas em bioiogurte adicionado de mel de abelhas africanizadas e Jataí, em diferentes concentrações. Para a elaboração do leite fermentado, utilizou-se leite em pó reconstituído e fermento lácteo. O bioiogurte foi avaliado com 0, 7, 14, 21, 28 e 35 dias de armazenamento. Foram realizadas análises de pH, acidez titulável e contagem seletiva dos microrganismos Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 e Bifidobacterium BB-12. As contagens foram realizadas, respectivamente, em ágar MRS, em aerobiose, e ágar MRS-LP, em anaerobiose, com placas incubadas a 37ºC por 72 horas. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com parcelas subdivididas e cinco tratamentos: sem mel; 5 e 10% de mel de abelha africanizada; e 5 e 10% de mel de abelha Jataí. Os tempos de estocagem foram avaliados nas subparcelas. O bioiogurte apresentou contagens de bactérias láticas de 107 UFC g-1, em todos os tratamentos. As culturas probióticas mantiveram-se viáveis por 35 dias sob refrigeração (2-4°C). Houve efeito da interação entre os fatores de variação sobre a concentração dos probióticos no bioiogurte. Os méis têm efeito favorável sobre a contagem de células dos microrganismos avaliados.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the viability of probiotic bacteria in bioyogurt with the addition of honey from Africanized and Jataí bees, in different concentrations. To prepare the fermented milk, reconstituted powdered milk and lactic acid starter culture were used. The bioyogurt was evaluated at 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days of storage. Analyzes of pH, titratable acidity, and selective count of the Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 and Bifidobacterium BB-12 microorganisms were carried out. Counting was done, respectively, on MRS agar, in aerobiosis, and MRS-LP agar, in anaerobiosis, with plates incubated at 37°C for 72 hours. Treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design in split plot, with five treatments: without honey; 5 and 10% honey from Africanized bees, and 5 and 10% honey from Jataí bees. Storage times were evaluated in the split plots. In all treatments, bioyogurt showed counts of 107 CFU g-1 lactic acid bacteria. Probiotic cultures remained viable for 35 days under refrigeration (2-4°C). The interaction between the variation factors affected the probiotic concentration in the bioyogurt. The honeys have a favorable effect on the cell counts of the evaluated microorganisms.

Abstract In his 1761 thesis presented in Manila, Vicente de Memije proposed a new direct route around Cape Horn, contrasting with the prevailing route that had linked the Iberian Peninsula to the Philippines since the 16th century. His text was addressed to King Carlos III, whom it encourages to continue the missionary work in Asia begun by his predecessors. In his proposal, the Philippine archipelago, which had served as the main base for multiple religious orders to carry out the spiritual conquest of Asian lands since the 16th century, would continue to play this central role. His work also tried to demonstrate the need to establish a Hispanic cartographical tradition based upon the measurement of degrees of longitude oriented toward cardinal West, rejecting the measurements that various cosmographers had defined for the Spanish dominions and the Pacific Ocean. De Memije's thesis presents a graphic device in the form of two prints of immense scientific and artistic value. In order to create the first print, signed by Nicolás de la Cruz Bagay, he drew from diverse French, English, and Dutch graphic sources, as the information he obtained from contemporary Spanish works was limited. The second one is signed by Laureano de Atlas and constitutes one of the greatest creations of symbolic cartography.

Resumen Frente a la ruta que desde el siglo XVI enlazaba la Península Ibérica con las islas Filipinas, Vicente de Memije propuso en la Tesis presentada en Manila en 1761, una nueva ruta directa que bordeaba el Cabo de Hornos. Su texto se dedica al rey Carlos III a quien anima a continuar la tarea de evangelización de Asia de sus antecesores, partiendo para ello del archipiélago filipino, que ya desde el siglo XVI había servido de plataforma a las órdenes religiosas para llevar a cabo la conquista espiritual de las tierras asiáticas. También trata de demostrar la necesidad de establecer una cartografía hispánica basada en la medición de los grados de longitud hacia poniente, rechazando las medidas que distintos cosmógrafos habían otorgado a los dominios españoles y al Pacífico. La Tesis presenta como aparato gráfico dos estampas de gran valor científico y artístico. Para confeccionar la primera, firmada por Nicolás de la Cruz Bagay, acudió a diversas fuentes gráficas francesas, inglesas y holandesas, siendo limitadas las informaciones obtenidas en obras españolas. La segunda estampa aparece firmada por Laureano de Atlas y constituye una de las mejores creaciones de la cartografía simbólica.

Este trabalho teve como finalidade verificar a prevalência sorológica da lentivirose caprina (LVC) na microrregião de Juazeiro, na Bahia, por meio da técnica de imunodifusão em gel de agar (IDGA), bem como caracterizar os sistemas de criação da região. Para tal, foram avaliadas 693 amostras de soros sanguíneos de caprinos de 46 propriedades rurais em diferentes localidades, pertencentes aos 8 municípios formadores da microrregião (Campo Alegre de Lourdes, Casa Nova, Curaçá, Juazeiro, Pilão Arcado, Remanso, Sento Sé e Sobradinho). Na realização das visitas, aplicou-se um questionário com ênfase nas informações referentes ao manejo sanitário. Das propriedades visitadas, todas apresentavam sistema de criação extensivo, com predomínio de animais sem raça definida, baixa produtividade e baixo índice de tecnificação, visando principalmente à obtenção de carne. As principais enfermidades relatadas foram linfadenite caseosa, diarreias, ectoparasitoses e ceratoconjuntivite. Quanto à soroprevalência, 0,29% (2/693) das amostras apresentaram sorologia positiva para a LVC. Os animais positivos pertenciam à mesma propriedade, no município de Curaçá, que apresentou 12,5% (1/8) de propriedades positivas, contrastando com 2,17% (1/46) de soroprevalência total dos rebanhos visitados. Estes resultados sugerem, portanto, a necessidade da efetivação de medidas preventivas na região, principalmente no momento em que se verifica a importação de animais para melhoramento genético.

This work aimed to determine the serological prevalence of caprine artrithis encephalitis (CAE) in the microregion of Juazeiro, in the state of Bahia, using the technique of agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) to characterize the farming systems of the region. We collected 693 blood serum samples of goats from 46 farms in 8 different locations belonging to the municipalities forming the microregion (Campo Alegre de Lourdes, Casa Nova, Curaçá, Juazeiro, Pilão Arcado, Remanso, and Sobradinho). During the visits, a questionnaire was applied emphasizing information related to health management. All of the visited properties had extensive breeding systems, with predominance of mixed breed animals, low productivity and low technology rate, aiming mainly to use the meat. The main diseases reported were caseous lymphadenitis, diarrhea, ectoparasites and keratoconjunctivitis. Concerning seroprevalence, 0.29% (2/693) of samples tested positive for AGID. The positive animals belonged to the same property in the municipality of Curaçá, which showed 12.5% (1/8) of positive properties, in contrast to 2.17% (1/46) of total seroprevalence in the other visited properties. These results therefore suggest the need for new epidemiological surveys in the region, especially at a time when the importation of animals for genetic improvement is taking place.

PRUPOSE: Bacterial translocation has been shown to occur in critically ill patients after extensive trauma, shock, sepsis, or thermal injury. The present study investigates mesenteric microcirculatory dysfunctions, the bacterial translocation phenomenon, and hemodynamic/metabolic disturbances in a rat model of intestinal obstruction and ischemia. METHODS: Anesthetized (pentobarbital 50 mg/kg, i.p.) male Wistar rats (250-350 g) were submitted to intestinal obstruction or laparotomy without intestinal obstruction (Sham) and were evaluated 24 hours later. Bacterial translocation was assessed by bacterial culture of the mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN), liver, spleen, and blood. Leukocyte-endothelial interactions in the mesenteric microcirculation were assessed by intravital microscopy, and P-selectin and intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 expressions were quantified by immunohistochemistry. Hematocrit, blood gases, lactate, glucose, white blood cells, serum urea, creatinine, bilirubin, and hepatic enzymes were measured. RESULTS: About 86% of intestinal obstruction rats presented positive cultures for E. coli in samples of the mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, and spleen, and 57% had positive hemocultures. In comparison to the Sham rats, intestinal obstruction induced neutrophilia and increased the number of rolling (~2-fold), adherent (~5-fold), and migrated leukocytes (~11-fold); this increase was accompanied by an increased expression of P-selectin (~2-fold) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (~2-fold) in the mesenteric microcirculation. Intestinal obstruction rats exhibited decreased PaCO2, alkalosis, hyperlactatemia, and hyperglycemia, and increased blood potassium, hepatic enzyme activity, serum urea, creatinine, and bilirubin. A high mortality rate was observed after intestinal obstruction (83% at 72 h vs. 0% in Sham rats). CONCLUSION: Intestinal obstruction and ischemia in rats is a relevant model for the in vivo study of mesenteric microcirculatory dysfunction and the occurrence of bacterial translocation. This model parallels the events implicated in multiple organ dysfunction (MOD) and death.

Current competitiveness scenario in which engineering companies act, demands new production approaches, where the environmental variables play a key role. In such a way, the sustainability concept should begin to be managed by all the agents involved: engineers, architects, owners, among others. Sustainability concept, being of general character, has remained in a conceptual context, becoming difficult the development of tools that facilitate its consideration through the entire project life cycle. This study had as purpose to integrate the philosophies of Sustainable Construction, or Green Building, and Lean Construction, the latter employee as the necessary complement to give an analysis baseline focused on the production management. The design, planning and construction stages were defined as the enclosed life cycle, being determined integration vectors by means of the morphological analysis and cross-impact matrix. The vectors with direct relationship for the implementation of the Green-Lean integration were determined. As implementation tool of the Green-Lean integration, Constructability was used which allowed sequencing the construction processes. This conceptual exercise was only applied at design level. As a result, at conceptual level was stated that the tools applied in the project management (Lean Construction and Constructability), give a sound support for the implementation, and future application, of Sustainability criteria in the processes and stages involving the whole project life cycle.

El actual escenario de competitividad en el que se mueven las empresas de ingeniería, demanda nuevos enfoques de producción, donde las variables medioambientales juegan un papel relevante. En este sentido el concepto de sustentabilidad debe empezar a ser manejado por todos los agentes involucrados: ingenieros, arquitectos, mandantes, entre otros. El concepto de sustentabilidad, por ser de carácter general, se ha mantenido en un ámbito más bien conceptual, haciéndose complejo el desarrollo de herramientas que faciliten su consideración a través del ciclo de vida completo de un proyecto. Este estudio tuvo por propósito integrar las filosofías de Construcción sustentable, o Green Building, y Lean Construction, esta última empleada como el complemento necesario para entregar una base de análisis centrada en la gestión de producción. Se definió como ciclo de vida acotado las etapas de diseño, planificación y construcción, determinándose vectores de integración por medio del análisis morfológico y matrices de impacto cruzado. Se determinaron los vectores con relación directa para la implementación de la integración Green-Lean. Para operacionalizar la integración Green-Lean se empleó como herramienta de implementación la Constructabilidad, la que permitió secuenciar los procesos de construcción, ejercicio conceptual aplicado sólo a la etapa de diseño. Como resultado, se estableció a nivel conceptual que las herramientas aplicadas en la gestión de proyectos de construcción (Lean Construction y Constructabilidad), entregan un soporte sólido para la operacionalización, y futura aplicación, de criterios de sustentabilidad en los procesos y etapas que involucra el ciclo de vida completo de los proyectos de construcción.
