ABSTRACT: Leptospirosis, a disease of significant economic impact on livestock and public health concern, may exhibit unique epidemiological characteristics in indigenous villages, particularly those located within semiarid climates such as the Caatinga biome in Brazil. This environment often presents conditions unfavorable for leptospire survival. This study conducted serological diagnoses of livestock in indigenous villages within the Caatinga biome, Northeastern Brazil. The survey was carried out in the Mãe Maria and Santa Helena indigenous villages, home to the Xukuru de Cimbres tribe, in the county of Pesqueira, Pernambuco State, Brazil, within the Caatinga biome. Blood samples were collected from cattle (n = 42), goats (n = 41), and sheep (n = 19). Out of the 102 samples tested, 73 (71.6%; 95% CI = 62.8% - 80.3%) were seroreactive (cut-off ≥ 100). The seropositivity rates for cattle, goats, and sheep were 54.8%, 80.5%, and 89.5%, respectively. A statistically significant difference was observed in the proportion of seropositive animals between cattle and goats and cattle and sheep (P < 0.05). Icterohaemorrhagiae was identified as the most probable serogroup across all animal species. The study revealed that livestock in indigenous villages within the Caatinga biome are frequently exposed to leptospires. This finding underscores the importance of a One Health approach, emphasizing the need for comprehensive studies in areas where large human and animal populations coexist. Such studies are crucial for investigating zoonotic infections and for planning and implementing control measures against livestock-associated leptospirosis.

RESUMO: A leptospirose causa perdas econômicas na pecuária e é um problema de saúde pública, sendo possível que existam peculiaridades na epidemiologia dessa doença em aldeias indígenas, principalmente naquelas de áreas de clima semiárido, como o bioma Caatinga no Nordeste do Brasil, onde o ambiente é frequentemente adverso à sobrevivência de leptospiras. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi realizar o diagnóstico sorológico em rebanhos de aldeias indígenas no bioma Caatinga. A pesquisa foi realizada nas aldeias indígenas Mãe Maria e Santa Helena, tribo Xukuru de Cimbres, município de Pesqueira, estado de Pernambuco, Brasil, dentro do bioma Caatinga. Amostras de sangue foram colhidas de bovinos (n = 42), caprinos (n = 41) e ovinos (n = 19). No geral, das 102 amostras testadas 73 (71,6%; IC 95% = 62,8% - 80,3%) foram sororreativas (ponto de corte ≥ 100). Para bovinos, caprinos e ovinos as taxas de soropositividade foram de 54,8%, 80,5% e 89,5%, respectivamente. Houve diferença estatística na proporção de animais soropositivos entre bovinos e caprinos e bovinos e ovinos (P < 0,05). Icterohaemorrhagiae foi o sorogrupo mais provável em todas as espécies animais. O estudo mostra que animais de produção de aldeias indígenas são comumente expostos a leptospiras no bioma Caatinga, o que constitui uma preocupação do ponto de vista de Saúde Única e demonstra a importância de estudos amplos em que coexistem grandes números de humanos e animais na investigação de infecções zoonóticas e no planejamento e implementação de medidas de controle da leptospirose associada a animais de produção.

Abstract Background Genes and their variants associated with environmental factors contribute to the development of the hypertensive phenotype. The G protein beta 3 subunit gene (GNB3) is involved in the intracellular signaling process, and its variants have been related to susceptibility to arterial hypertension. Objective To determine the association of the GNB3 variant (rs5443:C>T) with arterial hypertension, biochemical parameters, age, and obesity in hypertensive and normotensive individuals from Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Method The identification of variants was performed by real-time PCR, using the TaqMan® system, in 310 samples (155 hypertensive and 155 normotensive). Biochemical analyses (renal function, lipid profile and glycemia) were performed from the serum using UV/Vis spectrophotometry and ion-selective electrode. A multiple logistic regression model was used to identify factors associated with arterial hypertension. The analysis of continuous variables with normal distribution was performed using the unpaired Student’s t test; non-normal data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney. P < 0.05 was considered significant. Results The rs5443:C>T variant was not associated with arterial hypertension in the evaluated population (p = 0.88). Regarding biochemical measures, the T allele was associated with high levels of triglycerides, glucose and uric acid in hypertensive individuals (p < 0.05). Conclusion These results show the importance of genetic diagnosis to prevent the causes and consequences of diseases and imply that the GNB3 rs5443:C>T variant may be associated with changes in the biochemical profile in hypertensive individuals.

Resumo Fundamento Genes e suas variantes associadas a fatores ambientais contribuem para o desenvolvimento do fenótipo hipertenso. O gene da subunidade beta 3 da proteína G ( GNB3 ) está envolvido no processo de sinalização intracelular e suas variantes têm sido relacionadas à suscetibilidade à hipertensão arterial. Objetivo Determinar a associação da variante GNB3 (rs5443:C>T) com a hipertensão arterial, parâmetros bioquímicos, idade e obesidade em indivíduos hipertensos e normotensos de Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais. Método A identificação das variantes foi realizada por PCR em tempo real, utilizando o sistema TaqMan®, em amostras de 310 pacientes (155 hipertensos e 155 normotensos). Análises bioquímicas (função renal, perfil lipídico e glicemia) foram realizadas a partir do soro por meio de espectrofotometria UV/Vis e eletrodo íon-seletivo. Foi utilizado um modelo de regressão logística múltipla para identificar fatores associados à hipertensão arterial. A análise das variáveis contínuas com distribuição normal foi realizada usando o teste t de Student não pareado; dados não normais foram analisados usando o teste de Mann-Whitney. Valores de p < 0,05 foram considerados significativos. Resultados A variante rs5443:C>T não esteve associada à hipertensão arterial na população avaliada (p = 0,88). Em relação às medidas bioquímicas, o alelo T esteve associado a níveis elevados de triglicerídeos, glicose e ácido úrico em indivíduos hipertensos (p < 0,05). Conclusão Os presentes resultados mostram a importância do diagnóstico genético para prevenir as causas e consequências de doenças e sugerem que a variante GNB3 rs5443:C>T pode estar associada a alterações no perfil bioquímico em indivíduos hipertensos.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although craniofacial pain has been associated with negative psychological aspects, how the patient’s perception of their own illness could influence craniofacial pain is not elucidated yet. Therefore, this study aims to identify the main factors and beliefs about the illness that could influence pain intensity and pain duration in people who experienced craniofacial pain in the last 24 hours. METHODS: This cross-sectional study comprised undergraduate students, aged between 18 and 40 years old, who experienced self-reported craniofacial pain in the last 24 hours. Participants answered questions regarding body functions, activities and participation, and personal factors based on the International Classification of Functioning (ICF); In addition, questions from the Brief Illness Perceptual Questionnaire (Brief IPQ) were applied. The analysis was carried out with a single and multiple regression model. RESULTS: The sample comprised 87 volunteers. Pain intensity and duration experienced in the last 24 hours were associate by concerns about the presence of an illness and the need for treatment. Pain intensity was specifically associated with the importance of treatment and the extent to which the patient is concerned about their pain (R2=0.108). Pain duration was associated with how much the individual is worried about their illness (R2=0.1459). CONCLUSION: Both pain intensity and duration experienced in the last 24 hours are associated with concerns regarding the presence of an illness and beliefs related to such illness treatment, which reinforces the influence of psychosocial aspects on pain perception.

RESUMO JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: Embora a dor craniofacial seja associada a aspectos psicológicos negativos, ainda não está totalmente elucidado como a percepção do paciente sobre sua própria doença pode influenciá-la. Portanto, este estudo teve como objetivo identificar os principais fatores e as crenças sobre a doença que podem influenciar a intensidade e a duração da dor em pessoas que sentiram dor craniofacial nas últimas 24 horas. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal composto por universitários, com idade entre 18 e 40 anos, que relataram dor craniofacial nas últimas 24 horas. Os voluntários responderam a perguntas sobre funções corporais, atividades e participação e fatores pessoais com base na classificação da Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidades (CIF). Além disso, foram aplicadas questões do Questionário de Percepção de Doenças Versão Breve (Brief IPQ). A análise foi realizada com um modelo de regressão simples e múltiplo. RESULTADOS: A amostra foi composta por 87 voluntários. A intensidade e a duração da dor sentida nas últimas 24 horas foram influenciadas pela preocupação com a presença de doença e com a necessidade de tratamento. A intensidade da dor foi associada à importância do tratamento e à preocupação do paciente com sua dor (R2=0,108). A duração da dor associou-se à preocupação do indivíduo com sua doença (R2=0,1459). CONCLUSÃO: Tanto a intensidade quanto a duração da dor vivenciadas nas últimas 24 horas são influenciadas pela preocupação com a presença de doença e crenças relacionadas ao seu tratamento, o que reforça a influência dos aspectos psicossociais na percepção da dor.

RESUMO: O transtorno de acumulação de animais, principalmente de cães e gatos, é uma questão complexa que ocorre em quase todas as comunidades, sendo necessário o levantamento de dados que contribuam para a compreensão da leptospirose dentro da iniciativa Saúde Única. Com o objetivo de determinar a soroprevalência deLeptospirasp. em cães e gatos provenientes de acumuladores de animais foram utilizados 71 cães e 39 gatos de 33 acumuladores do município de Patos, estado da Paraíba, semiárido do Nordeste brasileiro, utilizando-se o teste de soroaglutinação microscópica (SAM) como teste de diagnóstico. Trinta e oito animais (34,5%; IC 95% = 25,7 - 43,4%) foram sororreativos, sendo 46,5% em cães e 12,8% em gatos (P < 0,01), com maior frequência do sorogrupo Icterohaemorrhagiae em ambas as espécies. A alta soroprevalência encontrada sugere a necessidade de políticas públicas para esta população vulnerável no sentido de prevenir a transmissão de zoonoses.

ABSTRACT: Animal hoarding disorder, especially dogs and cats, is a complex issue that occurs in almost all communities, and it is necessary to collect data that contribute to the understanding of leptospirosis within the One Health initiative. In order to determine the seroprevalence of Leptospirasp., 71 dogs and 39 cats from 33 people with animal hoarding profile in the municipality of Patos, state of Paraíba, semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil were evaluated by using the microscopic serum agglutination test (MAT) as diagnostic test. Thirty-eight animals (34.5%; 95% CI = 25.7 - 43.4%) were seroreactive, with 46.5% in dogs and 12.8% in cats (P < 0.01), with the highest frequency of the Icterohaemorrhagiae serogroup in both species. The high seroprevalence reported suggests the need for public policies for this vulnerable population in order to prevent the transmission of zoonoses.

Abstract This study evaluated the effectiveness of Federal Protected Areas on the coast of the state of Paraíba in northeastern Brazil with regard to the preservation of mangrove forests. The study area encompassed remaining mangrove forests distributed in four federal protected areas (PAs) located in Paraíba: Area of Relevant Ecological Interest (AREI) of Mangroves of the Mamanguape River, Environmental Protection Area (EPA) of the Mamanguape River, the Restinga de Cabedelo National Forest (NATFOR), and the Acaú-Goiana Extractive Reserve (EXTRES). The methods consisted of a spatiotemporal analysis considering the year of creation of each PA, with mapping and quantification as well as the assessment of impacts and effectiveness. NATFOR and EXTRES had the most conserved mangrove areas on the temporal scale, whereas AREI and EPA had the largest reductions in areas of mangrove forest. Urban expansion, sugarcane monoculture, and shrimp farming represented the main negative impacts spatially identified in these PAs. Based on the results of this study, the mangrove forests analyzed have continually suffered anthropogenic pressures since their creation as protected areas. The greatest effectiveness in the preservation of mangrove forests was found in Acaú-Goiana EXTRES and the least effectiveness was found in the AREI of Mangroves of the Mamanguape River.

Abstract Background The extra-musculoskeletal manifestations (EMMs) such as recurrent acute anterior uveitis (rAAU), psoriasis (Ps), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), are related to the Spondyloarthritis (SpA), as well as they are associated with disease activity and poor prognosis. However, there are no data addressing its relevance regarding therapeutic decision-making in clinical practice. Objective To evaluate the impact of EMMs to drive the treatment decision-making in patients with SpA in a 12-month follow-up. Patients and methods SpA patients, according to the axial and peripheral ASAS classification criteria, as well as CASPAR criteria, with any active EMM, defined as main entry criteria, were included in this longitudinal cohort study. Individuals with a history of any disease or condition that could be associated with some of the studied endpoints, including neoplasms and infectious diseases, were excluded. Specific tools related to each EMM, including Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI), ophthalmologic evaluation, according to the Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) criteria, and gut complaints were used at baseline and during the 3-, 6- and 12-month of follow-up as outcomes measures over time. Descriptive and inferential analyses were used appropriately, including Pearson’s correlation test, chi-squared test, and ANOVA. P value less than 0.05 was considered as significant. Results A total of 560 patients were enrolled, of whom 472 meet the eligibility criteria. The majority (N = 274; 59.6%) had one or more EMM related to SpA umbrella concept. Among the EMM, the one that most influenced therapeutic decision-making was psoriasis (28.5%), followed by uveitis (17.5%) and IBD (5.5%), regardless of musculoskeletal manifestations. Clinical improvement of EMMs outcomes was observed in most patients over 12-month follow-up, especially in those with rAAU and IBD (P < 0.001). Conclusion Our results showed that EMMs guided the therapeutic decision-making in half of SpA patients, regardless of musculoskeletal condition, suggesting the inter-disciplinarity among the rheumatologist, ophthalmologist, dermatologist, and gastroenterologist plays a crucial role to manage them.

Abstract This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters for jumping measures in the Brazilian Sport Horses breed, looking to see which jump characteristics can be evaluated early and that present favorable genetic correlations (ϒg) with measures of later sports performance. Data were available for the results of jumping competitions on the Brazilian Sport Horses. Two traits were calculated: Classification (CLASS) of the animal (taking into consideration obstacle height, number of competitors, type of competition (regional, national, international) and final score (SCOREF) taking into consideration the weight of the competition, height of the obstacles and score for the placement and type of event. Heritabilities were low for the full database (0.00 and 0.07 for CLASS and SCOREF, respectively), but higher when only young horses were considered (0.09 and 0.67, respectively). Genetic correlations between these traits and subjective functional traits (using a scale of 0 to 10) measured at stallion approval for reproduction showed that Power was favorable for indirect selection for both traits (-0.85 for CLASS and 1.00 for SCOREF). Jump also showed a favorable correlation for SCOREF (0.53) but unfavorable for CLASS (1.00). Considering the importance of Temperament and the absence of unfavorable genetic correlations between it and competition results it was concluded that this trait can be maintained among the selection objectives of Brazilian Sport Horses. Suggestions are made for further genetic studies with this breed, and possible modifications in the evaluation regulations to improve data quality.

Resumo Este estudo estimou parâmetros genéticos para avaliações de salto em cavalos da raça Brasileiro de Hipismo, buscando características passíveis de serem avaliadas precocemente e que estejam geneticamente correlacionadas (ϒg) com resultados posteriores em competições esportivas. Para os resultados de competições de salto duas características foram consideradas: Classificação (CLASS) do animal (considerando alturas dos obstáculos; número de competidores; tipo de competição: regional, nacional ou internacional) e escore final (SCOREF) (considerando peso da competição, altura dos obstáculos e escore para a colocação e tipo de evento). Herdabilidades foram baixas (0,00 e 0,07 para CLASS e SCOREF, respectivamente) quando o banco de dados foi considerado como um todo. Foram mais elevadas quando apenas a categoria Cavalos Novos foi considerada (0,09 e 0,67, respectivamente). Correlações genéticas entre estas características e avaliações funcionais subjetivas (em escala de 0 a 10) tomadas em aprovações de garanhões para reprodução mostraram relação genética favorável à seleção indireta entre Potência e resultados de competição (-0,84 para CLASS e 1,00 para SCOREF). Salto também apresentou correlação favorável com SCOREF (0,53), porém desfavorável com CLASS (1,00). Considerando a importância do Temperamento e ausência de correlações genéticas desfavoráveis desta com resultados de competição, conclui-se que esta característica deve ser mantida entre os objetivos de seleção de cavalos Brasileiro de Hipismo. Sugestões de estudos genéticos futuros para a raça e para possíveis modificações no regulamento das avaliações, foram feitas visando a melhoria da qualidade dos dados.

ABSTRACT Prolonged drought extreme events can intensify eutrophication symptoms. This study aimed to analyze the trophic state of two semiarid reservoirs (Cruzeta and Dourado) that experience regular periods of drying and reflooding, verifying limnological changes. Two distinct periods were defined: Period I - before water depletion and Period II – after water renewal. To assess the changes in the limnological variables and the trophic state following the reflooding was conducted Wilcoxon test, Pearson's Correlation, and cluster analysis. Despite similar hydro-meteorological conditions, the reservoirs exhibited different outcomes in limnological variables. Due to the prolonged drought, Cruzeta maintained the eutrophic state in both periods, with the reservoir retaining only 2% of its water volume. In the Dourado reservoir, the trophic state change was observed, shifting from mesotrophic to eutrophic. The acceleration of eutrophication may have occurred due to the existence of organic matter in the sediment, coming from plantations inside the reservoir in addition to phosphorus carried from the drainage basin and by internal loading. Thus, reflooding did not improve water quality conditions and may intensify eutrophication. Therefore, it is recommended that effective reservoir and drainage basin management practices be implemented to mitigate eutrophication and aim for improvements in water quality.

RESUMO Eventos extremos de seca prolongada podem intensificar os sintomas de eutrofização. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o estado trófico de dois reservatórios semiáridos (Cruzeta e Dourado) que sofrem constantes períodos de seca e reinundação, verificando as mudanças limnológicas. Dois períodos foram definidos: Período I - antes do esgotamento da água e Período II - após a renovação da água. Para verificar as alterações das variáveis limnológicas e do estado trófico após a reinundação foi realizado teste de Wilcoxon, Correlação de Pearson e análise de cluster. Os reservatórios apresentaram resultados diferentes nas variáveis limnológicas, apesar de cenários hidrometeorológicos semelhantes. Cruzeta manteve o estado eutrófico em ambos os períodos, devido ao efeito da seca prolongada, o reservatório se encontrava com apenas 2% do seu volume. Dourado passou de mesotrófico para eutrófico. A aceleração da eutrofização pode ter ocorrido devido à existência de matéria orgânica no sedimento, proveniente de plantios no interior do reservatório, além de fósforo carreado da bacia de drenagem e por carregamento interno. A reinundação não melhorou as condições de qualidade da água e pode intensificar a eutrofização. Portanto, recomendamos práticas eficazes de gestão de reservatórios e bacias de drenagem para mitigar a eutrofização, visando melhorias na qualidade da água.

ABSTRACT Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) is an inherited neurodegenerative mitochondrial disease. The potential rate of spontaneous recovery is controversial in the literature. Gene therapy has been studied to support patients. The objective of this review was to qualitatively assess the safety, adverse effects, and efficacy of available gene therapy. This is a systematic review of articles indexed in PubMed®, VHL, SciELO, Cochrane, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Lilacs databases, in the first half of 2021. Inclusion criteria and filters were: articles related to the topic, randomized studies, clinical trials, work in humans, last 5 years, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish and full text available for free. The exclusion parameters were: duplicate articles, not related to the topic, review articles, not available works, and works that did not meet the inclusion criteria. The kappa coefficient was 0.812. The therapy had no serious adverse effects in any of the selected articles, and minor effects experienced 100% spontaneous remission after treatment. Although NAbs were found in the serum of some patients, there was no association between the adaptive immune response and the injection of the viral vector. The treatment was effective in improving acuity and visual field. Several studies have confirmed the effectiveness of gene therapy, at low and medium doses, in improving visual acuity and also on common adverse effects related to high doses. The humoral immune response and the variation in serum NAbs was cited in more than one article. The therapy was effective in improving visual acuity and the adverse effects that arose were easily treated. However, the humoral immune response still needs to be studied.

RESUMO A neuropatia óptica hereditária de Leber é uma doença mitocondrial hereditária neurodegenerativa. A taxa potencial de recuperação espontânea é controversa na literatura. A terapia genética tem sido estudada como suporte aos pacientes. O objetivo desta revisão foi avaliar qualitativamente a segurança, os efeitos adversos e a eficácia da terapia gênica disponível. Trata-se de uma revisão sistemática de artigos indexados nas bases de dados PubMed®, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, SciELO, Cochrane, ScienceDirect, Scopus e Lilacs no primeiro semestre de 2021. Os critérios de inclusão e filtros foram: artigos relacionados ao tema, estudos randomizados, ensaios clínicos, trabalhos em humanos, últimos 5 anos, nas línguas portuguesa, inglesa e espanhola e texto completo disponível gratuitamente. Os parâmetros de exclusão foram: artigos duplicados, fuga ao tema, artigos de revisão, trabalhos não disponíveis e que fugiam aos critérios de inclusão. O coeficiente de kappa foi 0,812. A terapia não apresentou efeitos adversos sérios em nenhum dos artigos selecionados, e os efeitos menores sofreram 100% de remissão espontânea após o tratamento. Apesar de NAbs terem sido encontrados no soro de alguns pacientes, não houve associação entre a resposta imune adaptativa e a injeção do vetor viral. O tratamento foi eficaz na melhora da acuidade e campo visual. Vários estudos confirmaram a eficácia da terapia gênica, em doses baixas e médias, na melhora da acuidade visual e também sobre os efeitos adversos comuns relacionados à altas doses. A resposta imune humoral e a variação dos NAbs no soro foi citada em mais de um artigo. A terapia foi eficaz na melhora da acuidade visual e os efeitos adversos que surgiram foram tratados facilmente. No entanto, a resposta imune humoral ainda precisa ser estudada.

Abstract Introduction Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is the fourth most prevalent mental disorder and is a disabling condition. OCD is associated with anatomical and functional changes in the brain, in addition to dysfunctional cognitions. The treatments of choice are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and exposure and response prevention (ERP). Trial-based cognitive therapy (TBCT) is a recent and empirically validated psychotherapy with a focus on restructuring dysfunctional negative core beliefs (CBs). The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of TBCT relative to ERP for treatment of OCD. Methods A randomized, single-blind clinical trial was conducted, randomizing 26 patients for individual treatment with TBCT (n = 12) or ERP (n = 14). The groups were evaluated at baseline, at the end of 3 months (12 sessions), and at 3, 6, and 12-month follow-ups. Results Both approaches reduced the severity of symptoms with large effect sizes. These results were maintained at the 12-month follow-up assessment. Conclusion TBCT may be a valid and promising treatment for this disorder.

ABSTRACT Purpose To characterize the profile of Brazilian speech therapists with specialized training in orofacial myology (OM). Methods Descriptive and exploratory, cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach, carried out between September 2022 and February 2023, in partnership with CFFa. Eighty-seven speech therapists with specialized training in OM participated. Results showed female predominance, age between 41 and 50 years, and time of specialized training in OM between 16-20 years; most with specialist titles in the Southeast of Brazil. Most work in offices/outpatient clinics and/or clinics with interdisciplinary actions with Medicine and Dentistry; seeing adults and children, mainly in a private sector. As to OM domains there was a predominance of rehabilitation of soft structures and oral habits, and most use technologies: light - reception and assistance, light-hard - evaluation and therapy, and hard - photobiomodulation (40.2%). Conclusion The Brazilian speech therapists with specialized training in OM participating in the study are mostly women over 41 years old, who hold the title of specialists, and carry out practices in various domains and levels of technology in the area, with a predominance of diagnosis and rehabilitation of oromyofunctional disorders.

RESUMO Objetivo Caracterizar o perfil do fonoaudiólogo brasileiro com formação especializada em motricidade orofacial (MO). Métodos Estudo descritivo e exploratório, transversal, de abordagem quantitativa, realizado entre setembro 2022 e fevereiro 2023, com parceria do Conselho Federal de Fonoaudiologia. Participaram 87 fonoaudiólogos com formação em MO. Resultados Evidenciou-se predominância feminina, faixa etária entre 41 e 50 anos e tempo de formação especializada em MO entre 16 e 20 anos; maioria com título de especialista e da Região Sudeste do Brasil, atuando em consultórios/ambulatórios e/ou clínicas, com ações interdisciplinares com Medicina e Odontologia, abrangendo adultos e crianças, principalmente na rede privada. Prevaleceram os domínios da MO quanto à reabilitação de estruturas moles e hábito oral e maior uso de tecnologias: leve - acolhimento e assistência; leve-dura - avaliação e terapia e dura - fotobiomodulação. Conclusão Os fonoaudiólogos brasileiros com formação especializada em MO, participantes do estudo, são, em sua maioria, mulheres com mais de 41 anos de idade, que detêm titulação de especialista, com práticas nos vários domínios e níveis de tecnologia da área, principalmente em diagnóstico e reabilitação dos distúrbios miofuncionais orofaciais.

ABSTRACT Autism Spectrum Disorder is not an adverse condition for cochlear implantation, but the goals and expectations about the effects on hearing and language outcomes are different from the group of children without other impairments. The objective of this study was to analyze the development of auditory and oral language skills of a child with autism who underwent early cochlear implantation surgery and was included in an auditory (re)habilitation program using the aural-oral method. There was no benefit from the device for the development of oral language, and the child was referred to another communicative method. After 2 years and 9 months using the cochlear implants, there was little benefit from the use of the device for the development of auditory skills, with the child evolving to recognize only his own name. The patient quit using the device after three years of its activation.

RESUMO O transtorno do espectro autista não é uma contraindicação para o implante coclear, mas as metas e expectativas sobre os efeitos nos resultados da audição e da linguagem são diferentes em relação ao grupo de crianças sem outros comprometimentos. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o desenvolvimento das habilidades auditivas e de linguagem falada de uma criança com transtorno do espectro autista submetida precocemente à cirurgia de implante coclear e inserida em um programa de (re)habilitação auditiva no método aurioral. Observou-se que não houve benefício do dispositivo para o desenvolvimento da linguagem falada, tendo a criança sido encaminhada para outro método comunicativo. Em 2 anos e 9 meses de uso do implante coclear, observou-se pouco benefício do uso do dispositivo para o desenvolvimento das habilidades auditivas, havendo a evolução para o reconhecimento somente do próprio nome. A criança deixou de fazer uso dos dispositivos após três anos da ativação.

Abstract Introduction Clinical assessment in orofacial motricity is required for the speech therapist to diagnose and treat disorders involving the stomatognathic system. Validated tools can help establish a prognosis and outline intervention methods connected to human development. Objective The goal of the present study was to examine the domains of the oromyofunctional assessment of nursing infants and preschoolers according to sex and age group, as well as the application of the MMBGR Protocol – Nursing Infants and Preschool Children. Methods A quantitative technique was used to conduct an analytical and cross-sectional investigation. The present study included a total of 214 healthy breastfeeding infants and preschoolers of both sexes. The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the medians. The Spearman correlation of each test domain was determined. R Core Team 2021 (R Foundation, Vienna, Austria) was used, and the significance threshold was set at 5%. Results In intraoral and extraoral examinations, there was a difference between sexes for tongue scores in nursing infants(d =-0.428; p = 0.045), worse in males. When the orofacial functions were considered in nursing infants, there were differences between the sexes for the liquid/solid/semisolid deglutition scores (d = 0.479; p = 0.031), with females performing worse. There were sex differences in solid/semisolid deglutition (d = -0.335; p = 0.043), and speech in preschoolers (d = - 0.478; p = 0.034), including the production of phones/phonemes (d = - 0.599; p = 0.007), which were always worse in males. Conclusion The research revealed sex disparities and related the domains of oromyofunctional assessment, according to scores, of the domains of myofunctional assessment, as recorded in a standardized oromyofunctional assessment protocol by age group.

Abstract The Antillean manatee occurs discontinuously from the state of Amapá to the state of Alagoas on the coast of Brazil. There is also evidence of reintroduced manatees using the coasts of Sergipe and Bahia, with a preference for calm shallow waters. This study characterized the home range areas of six rehabilitated manatees released in northeastern Brazil. The activities were conducted in the states of Paraíba, Sergipe, and Bahia. Type of environment, substrate, depth, aquatic vegetation, physicochemical variables of the water, presence of solid waste, human settlements, and watercraft were considered to characterize the areas. The results showed a manatee preference for sheltered areas. Resources were available in larger quantities in the dry season, and a reduction in the availability of food items was fund over the years. High overlap was found in the multivariate space of the individuals in terms of the characteristics of the habitats. The estuary of the Paraíba River and the coastal area of Cabedelo Beach in Paraíba showed the greatest amount of solid waste, human settlements, and watercraft. Released manatees exhibited a preference for sites shallower than two meters, with food resources and fresh water availability.
