Ao considerar que os objetivos do governante são a conquista e a manutenção do poder, Nicolau Maquiavel sugere ser o estado de guerra uma situação permanente na arte de governar. Este artigo aborda o pensamento político do autor, a partir de sua análise sobre a guerra. Visa apreender o sentido que ele confere à política e os fundamentos de uma teoria sobre a guerra, construída com base no diálogo com as experiências dos antigos e as circunstâncias históricas de seu tempo. O trabalho está estruturado nos seguintes tópicos: o diálogo de Maquiavel com os antigos; a dessacralização da política; e o diálogo dos modernos com Maquiavel.

Considering that the goals of the ruler are the conquest and maintenance of power, Niccolò Machiavelli suggests that the state of war is a permanent situation in the art of governing. This article discusses the political thought of the author based on his analysis of war. It aims to apprehend the meaning that he confers on politics and the foundations of a theory about war, built on the dialogue with the experiences of past and the historical circumstances of his time. The work is structured according to the following topics: Machiavelli's dialogue with the past, desacralization of politics, and the dialogue between modernity and Machiavelli.

No debate sobre o imenso legado cultural da Grécia antiga, a questão da democracia é sempre evocada como ideal de participação direta dos cidadãos nas decisões coletivas, em oposição ao conceito moderno de representação política. Na busca não somente de oposições, mas de áreas comuns entre os dois conceitos, este artigo procura demonstrar que a teoria dos três poderes propugnada por Aristóteles e posteriormente retomado por Montesquieu nos conduz a um proeminente fio condutor nas relações que se estabelecem entre antigos e modernos.

In the debate on the immense cultural legacy of ancient Greece, the issue of democracy is always mentioned as an example of the direct participation of citizens in collective decisions, as opposed to the modern concept of political representation. In the search not only for differences but also for similarities between the two concepts, this article intends to demonstrate that the theory of the separation of powers, advocated by Aristotle, and later Montesquieu, leads to a prominent connection between ancient and modern democracy.
