Resumo O objetivo desse estudo é descrever o procedimento de correção da malformação de desvio angular metatársico, utilizando ostectomia em cunha, em uma potra puro-sangue de 41 dias de idade. Uma malformação metatársica angular de 41.6º foi corrigida com a técnica de ostectomia em cunha, em associação com fixador externo tipo II e resina de metilmetacrilato, no membro pélvico esquerdo. O animal foi submetido à cirurgia sob protocolo de anestesia geral. A potra foi posicionada em decúbito dorsal, com o membro pélvico esquerdo livre para manipulação. Para a realização da ostectomia em cunha, foi utilizada uma serra óssea. Para a instalação das barras do fixador externo, uma furadeira foi utilizada e, para fixá-los, pinos de Kirschner e resina acrílica foram aplicados. Logo após a cirurgia, imagens radiográficas foram obtidas para confirmar a redução total de 32,6º (de 41,6º para 9º) de angulação. Para garantir que o animal se adaptasse ao fixador externo linear e não sobrecarregasse os pinos e barras, foram instituídos cuidados pós-operatórios intensos, com medicações e bandagem de Robert Jones. Não houve complicações no pós-operatório. No dia seguinte à cirurgia, a potra estava em pé, caminhando e sem sinais de dor. Após 180 dias, alcançou total calcificação óssea e os implantes puderam ser removidos em um segundo tempo cirúrgico. A potra demonstrou locomoção adequada, realizando todos os movimentos normais e pôde correr pelo pasto sem dificuldades. Um discreto desvio angular remanescente foi parcialmente corrigido por casqueamento.

Abstract This study describes a corrective procedure for a metatarsal angular malformation using wedge ostectomy in a 41-day-old Thoroughbred filly. A 41.6 °angular malformation of the metatarsus was corrected with wedge ostectomy of the left hindlimb in association with a type II external fixator and methyl methacrylate resin. The animal was subjected to the surgical procedure under general anesthesia. The filly was placed in dorsal recumbency with the left hind limb free for manipulation. A bone saw was used for the wedge ostectomy, while the bars for external fixation were placed using a drill. A Kirschner pin and acrylic resin were then applied. Radiographic images obtained immediately after surgery confirmed a total malformation reduction of 32.6 (from 41.6° to 9°). With medication and a Robert Jones bandage, intensive postoperative care was instituted to ensure that the animal adapted properly to the linear external fixator without overloading the pins and connection bars. No postoperative complications were observed. On the day after surgery, the filly was standing and walking with no signs of pain. After 180 days, total osseous calcification was achieved, and the implants were removed during the second surgery. The filly demonstrated adequate locomotion, performed all the movements, and ran without any difficulty in the paddock. The remaining discrete angular deviations were partially corrected using hoof trimming.

RESUMO: As doenças respiratórias são uma grande preocupação em cavalos Puro Sangue Inglês (PSI) jovens durante o primeiro ano de treinamento para corrida. Existem evidências da influência da flora intestinal sobre a condição imunológica do organismo, incluindo a resposta de defesa das vias aéreas, porém essas informações são escassas nos cavalos. O presente estudo preliminar teve como objetivo investigar a influência da suplementação com núcleo mineral comercial com probiótico e prebiótico sobre a resposta imunológica respiratória de cavalos PSI durante os primeiros meses de estabulagem e treinamento. Doze cavalos PSI na fase de sobreano, machos e fêmeas, foram examinados ainda no haras (M0) e, um mês (M1) e cinco meses (M5) após estabulação no hipódromo em Curitiba, Brasil. Os cavalos foram submetidos a exames clínico e hematológico, endoscopia das vias aéreas e citologia do lavado traqueal (LT). Após o primeiro exame, os cavalos foram divididos aleatoriamente em grupo tratado (GT), que recebeu 10g por dia do suplemento, e grupo de controle (GC). Não houve diferença nos parâmetros clínicos, já no exame hematológico do GT, a contagem de eosinófilos foi menor em M1 quando comparado a M0 (P = 0,045). A hiperplasia folicular linfoide ficou dentro do limite normal e menores no GT em M1 quando comparado a M0 (P = 0.007), o que não ocorreu para o GC. O número relativo de eosinófilos no LT foi 86,1% maior em M1 versus M0 para o GC, enquanto no GT, os eosinófilos estavam ausentes e permaneceram dentro dos limites normais até M2. Concluindo, neste estudo preliminar, evidenciou-se uma influência positiva da suplementação probiótica e prebiótica na resposta imunológica respiratória de cavalos PSI jovens, justificando investigações adicionais.

ABSTRACT: There are evidences of intestinal flora influence on the airway immune response. However, this information is scarce with regard to horses. The present preliminary study aimed to investigate the effects of a commercial mineral supplement containing probiotics and prebiotics on the respiratory immune response of horses supplemented with them during the first months of stabling and race training. Twelve TB yearlings were examined at the breeding farm at the beginning of the study (June 2016, henceforth M0) and then reexamined one (July 2016, henceforth M1) and five (November 2016, henceforth M2) months after being stabled at a racetrack in Curitiba, Brazil. Clinical and hematological examinations, airway endoscopy, and tracheal wash (TW) cytology were performed. After the initial examination, horses were randomly divided between the treatment group (TG), which received 10 grams of the supplement daily, and the control group (CG). There was no difference between the groups in terms of clinical parameters; in the hematological examination, eosinophil count was lower in the TG in M1 as compared with M0 (P = 0.045). Pharyngeal lymphoid hyperplasia (PLH) improved in the TG during M1 as compared with M0 (P = 0.007). However, on the CG, PLH remained unchanged. Relative number of eosinophils in the TW was 86.1% higher in M1 than M0 for the CG; in the TG; however, eosinophils were absent and remained within normal limits until M2. In conclusion, this study revealed a positive influence of probiotic and prebiotic supplementation on the respiratory immune response of young TB race horses. Further investigations are recommended.

A avaliação científica do bem-estar tem sido importante para detectar animais não adaptados às condições de criação que lhes são impostas, situação que afeta o potencial produtivo e os coloca em maior risco de enfermidades. Com esse objetivo, foram avaliados 30 equinos da Cavalaria da Polícia Militar do Paraná, considerando-se indicadores clínicos, etológicos e hormonais. Na avaliação clínica, além da determinação do escore corporal e exame físico, verificou-se o histórico de ocorrência de cólica nos últimos doze meses. Comportamentos anormais foram pesquisados por observação etológica e a taxa do ritmo circadiano do cortisol (RCC) foi determinada por meio de duas colheitas de sangue, às 08 e às 17 horas. Apesar da significativa ocorrência de comportamentos anormais (26,7%), os achados clínicos foram normais e houve ausência de relato de cólica nos últimos 12 meses precedentes ao estudo. As médias dos resultados das análises de cortisol estiveram dentro da normalidade, nos dados absolutos e na variação do RCC, entretanto, 42% dos animais analisados apresentaram RCC alterado. Apesar da expressiva incidência de comportamentos anormais e de animais com alteração no ritmo circadiano de cortisol, sinais indicadores de estresse crônico, considerou-se que os equinos deste estudo apresentaram boas condições de bem-estar em relação àquelas relatadas por estudos nacionais prévios.

The scientific assessment of welfare has been important to detect animals non adapted to their management conditions, which can interfere with their productive potential and put them at increased risk of illness. With this objective, 30 horses from the Military Police of Paraná were evaluated, considering clinical, ethological and hormonal indicators of equine welfare. In the clinical evaluation, horses were assessed by physical examination and their body score conditions and the history of colic incidence in the last twelve months were determined. Abnormal behavior incidence were studied by ethological observation and the individual rate of circadian rhythm of cortisol (RCC) was calculated based on cortisol concentration changes in two blood samples taken at 08:00 am and 5:00pm. Despite significant incidence of abnormal behaviors (26.7%), clinical findings were normal and there were no reports of colic episodes in the last 12 months preceding the study. The mean blood cortisol concentrations and the mean RCC rate were within the normal range. However, 42% of the studied horses had abnormal RCC rates. Despite the significant incidences of abnormal behavior and abnormal RCC rates (indicators of chronic stress), these horses were considered in good welfare when compared to ones previously reported in other national studies.
