The present prospective work of scientific articles related to foods and natural products with anti-Covid activity in databases in order to present a scientific community, to governments and society as main foods, nutraceuticals and medicinal plants as strategies used by countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. A review of articles on food, medicinal plants and biotechnology was carried out in databases of scientific articles such as: CAPES journals, PubMed, Elsevier's Science Direct, Willey on library library, Taylor & Francis Springer-Nature database, BMC, Hindawi, Scielo, ACS - American Chemical Society, Google Scholar, in addition to the Patent Database “The LENS” and “Questel-Orbit”. Foods used in daily life such as garlic, ginger, turmeric, sour orange, vegetables, lactobacilli demonstrate proven anti-virus action. Medicinal plants used by Traditional Chinese, Korean and Indian Medicine also demonstrate anti-Covid activity and used during the coronavirus outbreak. Some medicinal plants, green propolis extract, red propolis extract, royal gelly, polen, honey have also been cited as anti-covid, natural anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory products.

O presente trabalho prospectou artigos científicos relacionadas à alimentos e produtos naturais com atividade anti-Covid com o intuito de apresentar, à comunidade científica, aos governos e à sociedade, dados sobre as principais estratégias nutracêuticas, biotecnológicas e plantas medicinais utilizadas em alguns países durante o enfrentamento da pandemia COVID-19. A revisão de artigos sobre alimentos, plantas medicinais e produtos biotecnológicos foi realizada nas bases de dados periódicos da CAPES, PubMed, Science Direct, Willey on line library, Springer-Nature, Taylor & Francis, BMC, Hindawi, Scielo, ACS – American Chemical Society, Google acadêmico, “The LENS” e Questel-Orbit. Alimentos de uso frequente como alho, gengibre, cúrcuma, laranja azeda, vegetais e lactobacilos demonstraram ação anti-coronavirus comprovada. Foram descritos usos de plantas medicinais da Medicina tradicional Chinesa, Coreana, Indiana bastante utilizadas durante a pandemia. Algumas plantas medicinais e nutracêuticos como: extrato de própolis verde e extrato de própolis vermelha brasileiras, geleia real, pólen e mel também foram citados como produtos anti-covid, antiinflamatórios naturais e imunomodulatórios.

BACKGROUND Streptococcus agalactiae can causes sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis in neonates, the elderly, and immunocompromised patients. Although the virulence properties of S. agalactiae have been partially elucidated, the molecular mechanisms related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in infected human endothelial cells need further investigation. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the influence of oxidative stress in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) during S. agalactiae infection. METHODS ROS production during S. agalactiae-HUVEC infection was detected using the probe CM-H2DCFDA. Microfilaments labelled with phalloidin-FITC and p47phox-Alexa 546 conjugated were analysed by immunofluorescence. mRNA levels of p47phox (NADPH oxidase subunit) were assessed using Real Time qRT-PCR. The adherence and intracellular viability of S. agalactiae in HUVECs with or without pre-treatment of DPI, apocynin (NADPH oxidase inhibitors), and LY294002 (PI3K inhibitor) were evaluated by penicillin/gentamicin exclusion. Phosphorylation of p47phox and Akt activation by S. agalactiae were evaluated by immunoblotting analysis. FINDINGS Data showed increased ROS production 15 min after HUVEC infection. Real-Time qRT-PCR and western blotting performed in HUVEC infected with S. agalactiae detected alterations in mRNA levels and activation of p47phox. Pre-treatment of endothelial cells with NADPH oxidase (DPI and apocynin) and PI3K/Akt pathway (LY294002) inhibitors reduced ROS production, bacterial intracellular viability, and generation of actin stress fibres in HUVECs infected with S. agalactiae. CONCLUSIONS ROS generation via the NADPH oxidase pathway contributes to invasion of S. agalactiae in human endothelial cells accompanied by cytoskeletal reorganisation through the PI3K/Akt pathway, which provides novel evidence for the involvement of oxidative stress in S. agalactiae pathogenesis.

O tratamento da doença hemorroidária (DH) pelas técnicas convencionais cursa com significante morbidade principalmente relacionada à dor pós-operatória e ao considerável tempo de afastamento do trabalho. A técnica de desarterialização hemorroidária transanal guiada por doppler (DHGD) associada à mucopexia retal é uma opção cirúrgica menos invasiva que vem sendo utilizada como método alternativo com objetivo de reduzir esses inconvenientes. OBJETIVO: Analisar os resultados iniciais com a técnica da DHGD associada à mucopexia retal no tratamento da DH. MÉTODO: Foram estudados 42 pacientes, portadores de DH de graus II, III e IV submetidos à técnica da DHGD, durante o período de dezembro de 2010 a agosto de 2011. Onze pacientes (26%) apresentavam DH do grau II, 21(50%) do III e 10 (24%) do IV. Todos os pacientes foram operados pelo mesmo cirurgião, sob anestesia raquidiana e sempre utilizando o mesmo equipamento e técnica para realização do procedimento. Os 42 pacientes foram submetidos à desarterialização de 6 ramos arteriais seguida de mucopexia retal por sutura contínua. Nove necessitaram remoção concomitante de plicomas perianais. No pós-operatório, foram avaliados os parâmetros: dor, tenesmo, sangramento, prurido, prolapso, perda de muco e recidiva. O seguimento médio foi de quatro meses (um a nove meses). RESULTADOS: O tenesmo foi a queixa pós-operatória referida por 85,7% dos pacientes, seguida da dor 28,6%, ardor perianal 12,3%, perda de muco e formação de hematoma perianal 4,7%. Dois pacientes apresentaram sangramento pós-operatório de maior intensidade necessitando hemostasia cirúrgica, sendo que em um houve necessidade de reposição sanguínea. Noventa e cinco por cento dos pacientes declararam-se satisfeitos com o método. CONCLUSÃO: A técnica da DHGD, apesar de apresentar complicações semelhantes a outros métodos cirúrgicos, apresenta bons resultados com pouca dor pós-operatória, possibilitando retorno rápido ao trabalho. Estudos com maior número de casos e tempo de seguimento mais prolongado ainda são necessários para avaliar a recidiva tardia.

The treatment of hemorrhoidal disease (HD) by conventional hemorrhoidectomy is associated with significant morbidity, mainly represented by the postoperative pain and the late return to daily activities. Doppler-guided hemorrhoid artery ligation (DGHAL) is a minimal-invasive surgical treatment for HD that has been used as an alternative method in order to reduce these inconveniences. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the initial results of the DGHAL technique associated with rectal mucopexy in the treatment of HD. METHODS:Forty-two patients with stage I, III and IV hemorrhoids who were submitted to DGHAL were analyzed from December 2010 to August 2011. Eleven patients (26%) were stage II; 21 (50%), stage III; and 10 (24%), stage IV HD. All patients were operated by the same surgeon under spinal anesthesia and using the same equipment and technique to perform the procedure. The 42 patients underwent ligation of six arterial branches followed by rectal mucopexia by uninterrupted suture. Nine patients needed concomitant removal of perianal skin tag. In the postoperative, the following parameters were evaluated: pain, tenesmus, bleeding, itching, prolapse, mucus discharge and recurrence. The mean postoperative follow-up lasted four months (one to nine months). RESULTS: Tenesmus was the most common postoperative complaint for 85.7% of patients followed by pain, in 28.6%, perianal burning, in 12.3%, mucus discharge and perianal hematoma in 4.7%. Two patients had severe postoperative bleeding and required surgical haemostasis, one of which needed blood transfusion. Ninety-five percent of the patients declared to be satisfied with the method. CONCLUSION: Even though DGHAL has complications similar to those of other surgical methods, its results present less postoperative pain, allowing faster recovery and return to work. Studies with more cases and a longer follow-up are still necessary to assess the late recurrence.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as causas de infertilidade em vacas de corte repetidoras de serviço, relacionando sinais clínicos com características laboratoriais post-mortem. A identificação dos fatores que afetam o desempenho reprodutivo pode fornecer uma fundamentação científica para auxiliar na decisão quanto ao destino de vacas repetidoras de serviço; tratamento ou descarte. Este estudo tem abordagem diferencial dos trabalhos que contemplam somente a ocorrência de alterações post-mortem do trato genital. A correlação das alterações post-mortem com o histórico clínico dos animais pode auxiliar na determinação da causa de repetição de serviço de animais sem alteração clínica. Foram utilizadas 130 vacas e novilhas cruzas que não conceberam depois de, no mínimo, três serviços. Todos os animais foram identificados e submetidos à exame clínico e coleta de sangue para cariotipagem. Foram incluídos no estudo apenas animais com histórico de falha reprodutiva. Os animais foram encaminhados para um abatedouro e foram realizados exames post-mortem como inspeção macroscópica do trato genital, cultura bacteriológica e estudo histopatológico do útero. Alterações uterinas foram predominantes seguidas de alterações de oviduto e ovário. Foi observada uma maior freqüência de alterações histopatológicas de útero que alterações clínicas. Os animais utilizados no estudo apresentaram alta freqüência de patologia uterina (95%), tanto inflamatórias (42,9%) quanto degenerativas (59,7%). Patologias diagnosticadas somente por exames post-mortem e laboratoriais como oclusão tubária (29,8%) e trissomia do par sexual também foram observadas (1/10 vacas). Portanto, este estudo evidencia a importância do exame laboratorial no diagnóstico das causas de infertilidade de vacas com histórico de repetição de serviço.

The objective of this study was to investigate the causes of the repeat breeder syndrome comparing clinical signs and postmortem findings in beef cows. The identification of factors affecting the reproductive tract can support decisions as to whether treatment of repeat breeder cows is justifiable than culling. Since all animals were submitted to clinical examination before being slaughtered, this study has a differential approach when compared with others, where genital tracts from abattoir were examined. In this study, 130 crossbred cows and heifers that have failed to conceive after three or more services were identified, submitted to a clinical examination and blood collection for karyotyping and sent to an abattoir. postmortem examinations included macroscopic evaluation of the genital tracts, bacteriology and histopathology of the uterus. Uterine alterations were predominant followed by oviduct and ovarian pathologies. Histopathological examination was more sensitive as a diagnostic tool than clinical examination. Repeat breeder cows had a predominance of uterine abnormalities (95%), such as inflammatory (42.9%) and degenerative (59.7%) conditions. Oviduct abnormalities were found in 29.8 % of animals. Furthermore, 1 out 10 karyotyped cows showed aneuploidy. Thus, this study stressed the importance of laboratory exams in the diagnosis of the causes of infertility of repeat breeder cows.
