Abstract A kinetic model was developed to represent the radical-scavenging capacity (RSC) for the oxidation of oils. The model was developed using second-order rate constants (k2) to represent the RSC. The RSC of the oils can be compared by the k2 values indicating their scavenging capacity. Furthermore, the k2 values can be used to determine the decay kinetic of oils prone to attack by free radicals and to determine the amount of antiradicals that should be added as protective agent to these oils. As a case study, the antiradical capacity of four oils produced from tropical and subtropical fruits (avocado, nance, palm and peach palm) were studied using the DPPH• assay.

Abstract The present work aimed to evaluate the residue generated by the processing industry of acerola juice as a natural source of nutritional compounds and dietary antioxidant fiber. The determination of the dietary fiber, extraction and determination of phenolic compounds and antioxidants associated with dietary fiber in triplicates, expressed as mean values ± standard deviation, were performed. The pulp and refiner residues showed high contents of bioactive compounds and polyphenols, both presented high content of total dietary fiber, associated to the antioxidant activity. It is concluded that it is a material of high functional value and with beneficial health properties, being able to add value to products that have it as raw material.

This study aims to report the case of a patient with sickle cell anemia, that had right calcaneal ulcer, treated topically with coverage based on collagen and aloe vera. Clinical case study, developed in a public hospital in João Pessoa-PB, which is part of an experimental research project for the development of new technologies for wound treatment. History was taken and physical examination was performed, and the information was recorded in the evaluation form of the client. Bandages were applied, evaluations and daily logs of the lesion were made and photographs were taken to assist in monitoring the response of the lesion to the applied coverage. During the appointments, guidelines were given on systematic medical follow-up, on the diet, on the abstention from alcohol, to rest and to prevent new injuries on the wound. The client reported gradual reduction of pain, attendance to hematologist appointments, caution to prevent trauma on the injury, abandonment of alcoholism and diet was followed within their economic possibilities, The treatment lasted approximately five weeks, showing rapid healing process, without discomfort or complications arising from the use of coverage. The coverage showed good tolerability and therapeutic efficacy in the given case.

Este estudo tem como objetivo relatar o caso de um paciente com anemia falciforme, portador de úlcera no calcâneo direito, tratado topicamente com cobertura à base de colágeno e Aloe vera. Estudo de caso clínico, desenvolvido em um hospital público de João Pessoa-PB e que faz parte de um projeto de pesquisa experimental para o desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias para o tratamento de feridas. Foi realizada anamnese e exame físico, sendo as informações registradas na ficha de avaliação do cliente. Foram realizados curativos, avaliações, registros diários da lesão, bem como fotografias para auxiliar no acompanhamento da resposta da lesão à cobertura aplicada. Durante os atendimentos foram feitas orientações em relação ao acompanhamento médico sistemático, à dieta, à abstenção do etilismo, ao repouso e à prevenção de novos traumas sobre a lesão. O cliente referiu diminuição progressiva da dor, frequência às consultas com o hematologista, seguimento da dieta dentro das suas possibilidades econômicas, cuidados para prevenção de trauma sobre a lesão e abandono do etilismo. O tratamento teve a duração de aproximadamente cinco semanas, evidenciando-se rápido processo cicatricial, sem desconfortos ou complicações decorrentes do uso da cobertura. A cobertura apresentou boa tolerabilidade e eficácia terapêutica para o caso em tela.

OBJECTIVES: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic in Brazil and appears to occur in epidemic form in the state of Ceará. Few epidemiologic studies have been done on VL in this state. The aim of this study is to establish the epidemiologic pattern of VL in Fortaleza City and to show how urbanization has occurred in recent years. METHODS: Data were obtained from the State Health Department of Fortaleza, Ceará, and included all cases of VL registered in Fortaleza from January 2001 to December 2006. RESULTS: There were a marked increase and an elevated incidence of cases of VL in urban areas. Children and young people were the most affected group. CONCLUSION: The epidemic occurrence of VL in the region must convince authorities to adopt more adequate policies of disease control.

OBJETIVOS: La leishmaniasis visceral (LV) es endémica en Brasil y suele ocurrir en forma epidémica en el estado de Ceará. Se han realizado pocos estudios epidemiológicos sobre LV en ese estado. El objetivo de este estudio es establecer el patrón epidemiológico de LV en la ciudad de Fortaleza y mostrar cómo ha ocurrido la urbanización de esta enfermedad en los últimos años. MÉTODOS: Los datos se obtuvieron del Departamento Estatal de Salud de Fortaleza, Ceará, y abarcaron todos los casos de LV registrados en esa ciudad entre enero de 2001 y diciembre de 2006. RESULTADOS: Se observó un marcado incremento y una elevada incidencia de LV en las áreas urbanas. Los niños y jóvenes fueron los grupos más afectados. CONCLUSIÓN: La ocurrencia de epidemias de LV en la región debe convencer a las autoridades para que adopten políticas más apropiadas para el control de esta enfermedad.

Objetivos: conhecer as características clínicas e bacteriológicas da mastite, classificação e tratamento. Métodos: as pacientes foram inquiridas sobre dados pessoais, pré-natal, atendimento no parto, no puerpério e quadro clínico. A mastite foi classificada pelos critérios de Vinha. Nos casos que evoluíram para abscesso, foi realizada análise bacteriológica, utilizando-se o meio de cultura caldo de enriquecimento Tryptone Soya Broth. Resultados: das 70 lactantes, 57% eram primíparas, 57% com idade entre 20 e 29 anos e 51% com 1º grau incompleto. A renda era menor que um salário mínimo em 63% dos casos. Exerciam atividade domiciliar sem apoio em 66% dos casos. Em 50%, as mamas não foram examinadas. No pré-natal não tiveram orientação sobre aleitamento e ordenha em respectivamente 50% e 58% dos casos. Em 63% o parto não foi em hospitais Amigos da Criança. Ocorreu ingurgitamento em 46% e fissura mamilar em 47% dos casos. Na classificação citada: 44% eram do tipo lobar, 39% ampolar e 17% glandular. No material de cultura houve crescimento de Staphylococcus aureus em 55%. Conclusões: fatores como baixa escolaridade, baixa renda, atividade familiar sem apoio, primiparidade e falta de orientação são fatores de risco para o aparecimento da mastite.

Purpose: to investigate clinical and bacteriological aspects, follow-up and treatment of mastitis in our clinic. Methods: this study was performed at Cleriston Andrade General Hospital. Patients were interviewed regarding personal data, prenatal care, care received during delivery and puerperium and clinical aspects. Their mastitides were classified by Vinha's criteria. The patients with abscesses had them drained for bacteriological study. Culture medium Tryptone Soya Broth was used. Results: seventy nursing mothers were interviewed; 57% of them had given birth for the first time, 57% were between 20 and 29 years old, 51% had not finished elementary school, 63% had income less than the minimum wage, 66% of them had nobody to help with the housework. Out of the seventy females, 50% had not had their breasts examined. Approximately half of them had not been told how to breastfeed (50%) or how to express breast milk (58%). Sixty-three percent had not delivered in institutions designated by WHO as "Children's Friends Hospitals". Engorgement occurred in 46% of the cases and nipple fissures in 47%. According to Vinha's criteria, 44% had lobar, 39% ampular and 17% glandular locations. Presence of Staphylococcus aureus was detected in 55% of the cases. Conclusion: factors such as low schooling, low incomes, no assistance in housework, giving birth for the first time and lack of professional help contributed to occurrence of mastitis.
