Resumo Apesar dos avanços das últimas décadas, Portugal continua a ser um país onde a desigualdade entre homens e mulheres no mundo empresarial é uma realidade. Pretende-se refletir sobre a (des)igualdade de género no trabalho, nomeadamente nos elementos específicos da região do Alto-Minho. Em total alinhamento com as orientações nacionais e internacionais para a igualdade de género. Apresentamos o projeto bridGEs, como exemplo de intervenção que atende à proximidade com a população e potencia o trabalho das empresas da região através do seu diagnóstico, desenvolvimento de plano de ação e monitorização. Com a apresentação do Projeto bridGEs pretende-se destacar os mecanismos e estratégias em curso potenciadores de maiores índices de igualdade de género na região do Alto Minho.

Abstract Despite the advances of the last decades, Portugal is still a country where inequality between men and women in the corporate world is a reality. The aim is to reflect on gender (in)equality at work, considering the specific characteristics of the Alto-Minho region. In total alignment with the national and international guidelines for gender equality, this project considers the proximity to the population and enhances the work of companies through its diagnosis, action plan development, and monitoring. Through this presentation of the bridGEs Project, we will highlight the mechanisms and strategies in progress to promote more significant gender equality indices in the region of Alto Minho.

Abstract As a result of family rejection, harassment and social exclusion, transgender adolescents are prone to suffering from symptoms of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-harm and even suicidal ideation. In gender binary and heteronormative social contexts, as in Chile and Portugal, such adolescents may feel pressured to conform to dominant gender normativities, seeking to align their bodies according to the socially imposed ideals of female and male. Although Chile and Portugal have advanced in the legal recognition of self-determination of gender identity in recent years, they have also encountered problems in implementing health policies aimed at the adolescent transgender population, which would thereby imply a failure to guarantee the fundamental right to health.

Resumo Em resultado da rejeição familiar, do assédio e da exclusão social, as pessoas adolescentes transgénero estão mais dispostas a sofrer de sintomas de depressão, ansiedade, distúrbios alimentares, de automutilação e até de ideação suicida. Em contextos sociais de género binário e heteronormativos, como no Chile e em Portugal, estas pessoas podem sentir-se pressionadas para se adaptarem às normatividades de género dominantes, procurando alinhar os seus corpos aos ideais socialmente impostos de feminino e masculino. Embora no Chile e em Portugal tenha havido, recentemente, avanços no reconhecimento legal da autodeterminação da identidade de género, estes países também têm encontrado problemas na implementação de políticas de saúde direcionadas à população transgénero adolescente, o que acabaria por implicar uma falha na garantia do direito fundamental à saúde.

Abstract This bibliographic essay seeks to explore the experiences of transgender and/or gender non-conforming (TGNC) people on the use of psychotherapy services. We begin by reviewing the state of the art of existing guidelines for psychotherapeutic intervention with this population. Followed by a bibliographic review aimed at accessing narratives of TGNC people about their psychotherapeutic processes, selecting four articles that explore a total of 70 narratives of TGNC people. We present an integrative exploration of the main findings of these researches. Finally, from a critical social constructionist positioning, some considerations for a critical psychotherapeutic practice with TGNC people are presented.

Resumo O presente ensaio bibliográfico procura refletir sobre as experiências e vivências de pessoas transgénero e/ou não-conformes de género (TGNC) em torno da utilização de serviços de psicoterapia. Começamos por enquadrar o estado de arte das linhas orientadoras existentes para a intervenção psicoterapêutica com esta população. Avançamos com uma revisão bibliográfica com objetivo de aceder a narrativas de pessoas TGNC sobre os seus processos psicoterapêuticos, selecionando quatro artigos que exploram um total de 70 narrativas de pessoas TGNC. Apresentamos uma reflexão integrativa das principais conclusões destas investigações. Por fim, são lançadas algumas considerações, baseadas num posicionamento construcionista social crítico, para uma prática psicoterapêutica crítica com pessoas TGNC.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Particular pain features, such as pain interference, neuropathic-like symptoms, and central sensitization (CS) symptoms may be present in patients with Chikungunya fever and lead to functional limitations. The present study aimed to assess the association between pain characteristics and the disability in participants affected by Chikungunya fever in the chronic phase. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 36 participants who filled out a sociodemographic, pain characteristics (pain interference - Brief Pain Inventory, neuropathic-like symptoms - PainDETECT Questionnaire, and CS-related signs and symptoms - Central Sensitization Inventory) and disability (Health Assessment Questionnaire) questionnaires. The Spearman correlation test (rho) verified the relationship between the outcomes. RESULTS: Most of the participants were female (77%), with a mean age of 43 years. Twenty-seven (75%) participants presented nociceptive pain and 11 (30%) had central sensitization symptoms. There was a high positive correlation between the presence of neuropathic-like symptoms and disability (rho=0.71; p<0.001) and pain intensity and disability (rho=0.76; p<0.001). A moderate positive correlation was found between the central sensitization symptoms and disability (rho=0.51; p=0.002). Moreover, there is a low positive correlation between pain interference in an individual’s life and disability (rho=0.34; p=0.041). CONCLUSION: Patients in chronic phase of Chikungunya fever revealed mild pain intensity and predominance of nociceptive pain. Pain interference, neuropathic-like symptoms, and central sensitization symptoms negatively impact individual’s disability after Chikungunya fever.

RESUMO JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: Características particulares da dor, como interferência da dor, sintomas do tipo neuropático e sintomas de sensibilização central (SC), podem estar presentes em pacientes com febre Chicungunha e levar a limitações funcionais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a correlação entre as características da dor e a capacidade funcional em participantes acometidos pela febre Chicungunha na fase crônica. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado um estudo transversal com 36 participantes que preencheram questionários sociodemográficos, de características de dor (interferência da dor - Inventário Breve de Dor, sintomas do tipo neuropático - questionário PainDETECT, e sinais e sintomas relacionados à SC - Inventário de Sensibilização Central) e de capacidade funcional (Health Assessment Questionnaire). O teste de correlação de Spearman (rho) verificou a relação entre os desfechos. RESULTADOS: A maioria dos participantes era do sexo feminino (77%), com média de idade de 43 anos. Vinte e sete (75%) participantes apresentaram dor nociceptiva e 11 (30%) apresentaram sintomas de sensibilização central. Houve alta correlação positiva entre a presença de sintomas do tipo neuropático e capacidade funcional (rho=0,71; p<0,001) e intensidade da dor e capacidade funcional (rho=0,76; p<0,001). Foi encontrada uma correlação positiva moderada entre os sintomas de sensibilização central e a capacidade funcional (rho=0,51; p=0,002). Além disso, há uma correlação positiva baixa entre a interferência da dor na vida do indivíduo e a capacidade funcional (rho=0,34; p=0,041). CONCLUSÃO: Pacientes em fase crônica da febre Chicungunha apresentaram intensidade de dor leve e predominância de dor nociceptiva. A interferência da dor, os sintomas do tipo neuropático e os sintomas de sensibilização central afetam negativamente a capacidade funcional do indivíduo após a febre Chicungunha.

Abstract Water is the most valuable resource on the planet. Currently, and due to the climate crisis, contemporary societies are faced with structural challenges due to the scarcity of water resources. Traditional ways of managing this resource have not been able to respond to these challenges. Therefore, it is necessary to reflect on social innovative approaches that can contribute to a sustainable transition where water represents an unavoidable dimension. This article argues that water should be managed in an integrated way, with the articulation of different actors so that solutions can take into account territorial specificities and individuals' needs. In this sense, the article mobilises two case studies - the Lajedo de Timbaúba community (Brazil) and the Tamera community (Portugal) - located in territories that recurrently suffer from drought situations to analyse their water retention and management strategies, categorising them as social innovations. The analysis reveals that these small-scale experiences - defined as niches - play a predominant role as places where innovative practices with potential for scalability emerge.

Resumo A água é o recurso mais valioso do planeta. Atualmente, e devido à crise climática, as sociedades contemporâneas são confrontadas com desafios estruturais devido à escassez dos recursos hídricos. As formas de gestão tradicional deste recurso não têm conseguido responder a estes desafios e é, portanto, necessário refletir sobre abordagens socialmente inovadoras que possam contribuir para uma transição sustentável onde a água representa uma dimensão incontornável. Este artigo argumenta que a água deve ser gerida de forma integrada, com a articulação de diferentes atores para que as soluções possam ter em conta especificidades territoriais e necessidades dos indivíduos. Neste sentido, o artigo apresenta dois estudos de caso - a comunidade Lajedo de Timbaúba (Brasil) e a de Tamera (Portugal) - situados em territórios que sofrem recorrentemente com situações de seca para analisar as suas estratégias de retenção e gestão de água, categorizando-as como inovações sociais. A análise revela que estas experiências de pequena escala - definidas como nichos - têm um papel preponderante como locais onde emergem práticas inovadoras com potencial de escalabilidade.

Resumo A Rede de Atenção às Urgências e Emergências (RUE) foi proposta enquanto política pública com a finalidade de articular e integrar os serviços assistenciais do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), ampliando e qualificando o acesso dos usuários em situação de urgência e emergência em saúde de forma ágil e oportuna. Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar a produção científica sobre a política da RUE no Brasil e elaborar sínteses demonstrando seus limites e desafios. Utilizou-se como método a revisão integrativa de literatura, a partir da busca de artigos nas bases de dados LILACS, SciELO e MEDLINE e de dissertações e teses na plataforma virtual da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes). A pesquisa possibilitou a análise de 34 estudos do campo da saúde coletiva, com enfoque nos diferentes serviços de urgência e a integração entre eles, incluindo possíveis transformações no processo de cuidado em saúde e distintas estratégias de avaliação, por meio de diferentes abordagens, principalmente qualitativas. São observadas fragilidades na articulação em rede, com manutenção da centralidade do componente hospitalar e o poder de seu capital simbólico, ficando a Atenção Básica relegada ao campo discursivo.

Abstract The Urgent and Emergency Care Network (RUE) was proposed in Brazil as a public policy to articulate and integrate the health services of the Brazilian National Health System (SUS), expanding and qualifying the access of users in e emergency health situations in an efficient and timely manner. This study analyzes the scientific production on the RUE in Brazil and elaborates summaries showing the limits and challenges of this health policy. An integrative literature review was used as a method, based on the search for articles in the LILACS, SciELO, and MEDLINE databases and for dissertations and theses on the virtual platform of the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES). The investigation enabled the analysis of 34 studies in the field of collective health, focused on the different emergency services and the integration between them, including possible changes in the health care process and different evaluation strategies, by using different approaches, mainly qualitative. Weaknesses are observed in the network articulation, maintaining the centrality of hospital services and the power of its symbolic capital, with primary care being relegated to the discursive field.

RESUMO Objetivo: analisar a tendência temporal da mortalidade materna e correlacioná-la com a cobertura pré-natal entre adolescentes e adultas jovens, Bahia, Brasil, 2000-2020. Métodos: estudo ecológico de série temporal e correlação entre óbitos maternos e consulta de pré-natal aos 10-19 e 20-24 anos, utilizando-se o Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade; a tendência foi analisada pela regressão de Prais-Winsten, segundo raça/cor da pele, causas e momento do óbito; para a correlação, utilizou-se o coeficiente de Spearman. Resultados: no período, foram registrados 418 óbitos de adolescentes e 574 de adultas jovens; razão de mortalidade materna de 59,7 e 63,2 óbitos/100 mil nascidos vivos, com tendência decrescente significante (-2,2% e -2,9% respectivamente); observou-se correlação inversa entre maior número de consultas e mortalidade materna, nos grupos etários. Conclusão: a mortalidade materna apresentou tendência de redução no período, porém com altas proporções de óbito; houve correlação significante entre cobertura pré-natal e mortalidade materna, entre adolescentes e adultas jovens.

RESUMEN Objetivo: analizar la tendencia temporal de la mortalidad materna y correlacionarla con la cobertura prenatal, entre adolescentes y adultas jóvenes, en el estado de Bahía, período 2000-2020. Métodos: estudio ecológico de series temporales y correlación entre muertes maternas y atención prenatal, en grupos de edad de 10-19 y 20-24, utilizando el Sistema de Información de Mortalidad. Analizó la tendencia mediante regresión de Prais-Winsten, según raza/color de piel, causas y hora de muerte; para correlación, el coeficiente de Spearman. Resultados: en el período se registraron 418 muertes de adolescentes y 574 de adultas jóvenes; razón de mortalidad materna de 59,7 y 63,2 muertes/100.000 nacidos vivos, con importante tendencia a la baja (-2,2%; -2,9%, respectivamente). Se observó correlación inversa entre el mayor número de consultas y la mortalidad materna en grupos. Conclusión: la mortalidad materna mostró tendencia descendente en el período, pero con altas proporciones de muertes. Hubo una correlación significativa entre la cobertura prenatal y la mortalidad materna, adolescente y adulta joven.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the temporal trend of maternal mortality and correlate it with prenatal care coverage among adolescents and young adults, state of Bahia, Brazil, 2000-2020. Methods: this was an ecological time-series study and correlation between maternal deaths and prenatal care visits in 10-19 and 20-24 age groups, using the Mortality Information System; the trend analysis was performed by means of Prais-Winsten regression, according to race/skin color, timing and causes of death; and Spearman coefficient was used for correlation. Results: in the study period, 418 deaths among adolescents and 574 among young adults were recorded; maternal mortality ratio was 59.7 and 63.2 deaths/100,000 live births, with a significant decreasing trend (-2.2% and -2.9% respectively); it could be seen an inverse correlation between a higher number of prenatal care visits and maternal mortality in the age groups. Conclusion: maternal mortality showed a decreasing trend in the study period, but with high proportions of death; there was a significant correlation between prenatal care coverage and maternal mortality among adolescents and young adults.

Abstract Background Cardiovascular complications of COVID-19 are important aspects of the disease’s pathogenesis and prognosis. Evidence on the prognostic role of troponin and myocardial injury in Latin American hospitalized COVID-19 patients is still scarce. Objectives To evaluate myocardial injury as independent predictor of in-hospital mortality and invasive mechanical ventilation support in hospitalized patients, from the Brazilian COVID-19 Registry. Methods This cohort study is a substudy of the Brazilian COVID-19 Registry, conducted in 31 Brazilian hospitals of 17 cities, March-September 2020. Primary outcomes included in-hospital mortality and invasive mechanical ventilation support. Models for the primary outcomes were estimated by Poisson regression with robust variance, with statistical significance of p<0.05. Results Of 2,925 patients (median age of 60 years [48-71], 57.1% men), 27.3% presented myocardial injury. The proportion of patients with comorbidities was higher among patients with cardiac injury (median 2 [1-2] vs. 1 [0-2]). Patients with myocardial injury had higher median levels of brain natriuretic peptide, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, and C-reactive protein than patients without myocardial injury. As independent predictors, C-reactive protein and platelet counts were related to the risk of death, and neutrophils and platelet counts were related to the risk of invasive mechanical ventilation support. Patients with high troponin levels presented a higher risk of death (RR 2.03, 95% CI 1.60-2.58) and invasive mechanical ventilation support (RR 1.87, 95% CI 1.57-2.23), when compared to those with normal troponin levels. Conclusion Cardiac injury was an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation support in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Resumo Fundamento As complicações cardiovasculares da COVID-19 são aspectos importantes da patogênese e do prognóstico da doença. Evidências do papel prognóstico da troponina e da lesão miocárdica em pacientes hospitalizados com COVID-19 na América Latina são ainda escassos. Objetivos Avaliar a lesão miocárdica como preditor independente de mortalidade hospitalar e suporte ventilatório mecânico em pacientes hospitalizados, do registro brasileiro de COVID-19. Métodos Este estudo coorte é um subestudo do registro brasileiro de COVID-19, conduzido em 31 hospitais brasileiros de 17 cidades, de março a setembro de 2020. Os desfechos primários incluíram mortalidade hospitalar e suporte ventilatório mecânico invasivo. Os modelos para os desfechos primários foram estimados por regressão de Poisson com variância robusta, com significância estatística de p<0,05. Resultados Dos 2925 pacientes [idade mediana de 60 anos (48-71), 57,1%], 27,3% apresentaram lesão miocárdica. A proporção de pacientes com comorbidades foi maior nos pacientes com lesão miocárdica [mediana 2 (1-2) vs. 1 (0-20)]. Os pacientes com lesão miocárdica apresentaram maiores valores medianos de peptídeo natriurético cerebral, lactato desidrogenase, creatina fosfoquinase, N-terminal do pró-peptídeo natriurético tipo B e proteína C reativa em comparação a pacientes sem lesão miocárdica. Como fatores independentes, proteína C reativa e contagem de plaquetas foram relacionados com o risco de morte, e neutrófilos e contagem de plaquetas foram relacionados ao risco de suporte ventilatório mecânico invasivo. Os pacientes com níveis elevados de troponina apresentaram um maior risco de morte (RR 2,03, IC95% 1,60-2,58) e suporte ventilatório mecânico (RR 1,87;IC95% 1,57-2,23), em comparação àqueles com níveis de troponina normais. Conclusão Lesão cardíaca foi um preditor independente de mortalidade hospitalar e necessidade de suporte ventilatório mecânico em pacientes hospitalizados com COVID-19.

ABSTRACT Objective To investigate the expression of human papillomavirus (HPV), p16, p53, and p63 in non-schistosomiasis-related squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder and to develop an accurate and automated tool to predict histological classification based on clinicopathological features. Methods Twenty-eight patients with primary bladder pure squamous cell carcinoma who underwent cystectomy or transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) for bladder cancer between January 2011 and July 2017 were evaluated. Clinical data and follow-up information were obtained from medical records. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded surgical specimens were used for immunohistochemical staining for p16, p53, and p63. Human papillomavirus detection was evaluated by PCR. Statistical analysis was performed, and statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Finally, decision trees were built to classify patients’ prognostic features. Leave-one-out cross-validation was used to test the generalizability of the model. Results Neither direct HPV detection nor its indirect marker (p16 protein) was identified in most cases. The absence of p16 was correlated with less aggressive histological grading (p=0.040). The positive p16 staining detection found only in pT1 and pT2 cases in our sample suggests a possible role for this tumor suppressor protein in the initial stages of bladder squamous cell carcinoma. The decision trees constructed described the relationship between clinical features, such as hematuria/dysuria, the level of tumor invasion, HPV status, lymphovascular invasion, gender, age, compromised lymph nodes, and tumor degree differentiation, with high classification accuracy. Conclusion The algorithm classifier approach established decision pathways for semi-automatic tumor histological classification, laying the foundation for tailored semi-automated decision support systems for pathologists.

ABSTRACT Objective: To describe the process of living with HIV/AIDS in the daily life of people living with HIV in its interface with the social representations of spirituality and religiosity. Method: Qualitative research, supported by the theory of social representations. A semi-structured interview was carried out with 32 people undergoing treatment for HIV in an outpatient clinic specialized in HIV/AIDS. Analysis carried out with the support of software IRAMUTEQ. Results: Participants were mostly men, aged over 51 years, Catholic, and living with the virus for more than 10 years. IRAMUTEQ generated three classes, in which the influence of spirituality and religiosity as a promoter of strength to face the infection and the difficulties in the process of coping with the diagnosis was observed, as well as the importance of the support network, and the naturalization of HIV/AIDS. Conclusion: The participants make associations between spirituality and the transcendent and divine; religiosity was anchored to religion and its experience, with both being a source of support and strength. Therefore, it is important to make room for the patient to talk about their spiritual/religious needs.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Describir el proceso de vivir con SIDA en el cotidiano de personas viviendo con VIH en su interfaz con las representaciones sociales de la espiritualidad y de la religiosidad. Método: investigación cualitativa, apoyada por la teoría de las representaciones sociales. Se realizó entrevista semiestructurada con 32 personas en tratamiento para VIH en un ambulatorio especializado en VIH/SIDA. Análisis realizado con soporte del software IRAMUTEQ. Resultados: Los participantes fueron en su mayoría hombres, con edad superior a 51 años, católicos y viviendo con el virus hace más de 10 años. El IRAMUTEQ generó tres clases, en las que se notó la influencia de la espiritualidad y de la religiosidad como promotora de fuerza para el enfrentamiento de la infección. Sino también, las dificultades en el proceso de enfrentamiento del diagnóstico, la importancia de la red de apoyo y la naturalización del VIH/SIDA. Conclusión: Los participantes hacen asociaciones de la espiritualidad al transcendente y al divino, la religiosidad fue ancorada a la religión y a su vivencia, ambas siendo fuente de apoyo y fuerza. Por eso, es importante abrir espacio al paciente hablar sobre su necesidad espiritual/religiosa.

Análise realizada com suporte do software IRAMUTEQ. Resultados: Os participantes foram em sua maioria homens, com idade superior a 51 anos, católicos e vivendo com o vírus há mais de 10 anos. O IRAMUTEQ gerou três classes. Nestas, viu-se a influência da espiritualidade e da religiosidade como promotora de força para o enfrentamento da infecção, assim como das dificuldades no processo de enfrentamento do diagnóstico, e a importância da rede de apoio e a naturalização do HIV/Aids. Conclusão: Os participantes fazem associações da espiritualidade ao transcendente e ao divino. A religiosidade foi ancorada à religião e à sua vivência, ambas sendo fonte de apoio e força. Por isso, é importante abrir espaço para o paciente falar sobre sua necessidade espiritual/religiosa.

Abstract Objective: The present study aimed to analyse the social representations of Psychology in a sample of Portuguese respondents, thus contributing to a better understanding of the social meaning of this scientific area. Method: A free association task was performed by a sample of 205 Portuguese individuals who were given the word “Psychology” as a stimulus. Data were analysed using content analysis, supported by the Max-Qda software. Results: The main results show a greater diversity of representations compared to previous studies. However, the dominant representation in terms of intervention is still the curative clinic and the medical paradigm. Conclusion: This research made it possible to highlight the need for Psychology professionals, and the entities that represent them, to reinforce the visibility and awareness of the community in general, of the application areas both in the scientific and professional context.

Resumo Objetivo: O presente estudo teve por objetivo analisar as representações sociais da Psicologia numa amostra de inquiridos portugueses, contribuindo, assim, para um maior entendimento do significado social dessa área científica. Método: Foi realizada uma tarefa de associação em uma amostra composta de 205 portugueses aos quais foi dado como estímulo a palavra “Psicologia”. Os dados foram analisados através de análise de conteúdo, com apoio do software Max-Qda. Resultados: Os principais resultados evidenciam uma maior diversidade de representações face a estudos anteriores. No entanto, a representação dominante em termos interventivos continua a ser a clínica curativa e o paradigma médico. Conclusão: Esta pesquisa permitiu evidenciar a necessidade de que profissionais de Psicologia e entidades que os representam reforcem a visibilidade e a consciência da comunidade em geral sobre as áreas de aplicação da Psicologia, quer no contexto científico, quer no profissional.

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the association between DH and Health (HRQoL) or Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL). Material and Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE, Cochrane, Scielo, LILACS/BBO, Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações (BDTD), Open Grey, and Google Scholar databases were screened in September 2019 (updated in October 2022). Observational studies were selected to compare HRQoL/OHRQoL(outcome) according to DH(exposure) or evaluate the association among these variables. Standardized Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool for analytical cross-sectional studies was used to analyze the risk of bias. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to synthesize evidence for the association between DH and OHRQoL. Results: 10 papers met inclusion criteria and were evaluated. In most studies, presenting or having a greater intensity of DH was associated with a negative impact on one's quality of life. However, most of these studies showed a moderate to high risk of methodological bias. The consistent finding from studies with a low risk of bias suggests a significant association between DH and OHRQoL. Meta-analysis was feasible for three studies with substantial heterogeneity. The pooled Odds Ratio was 2.14 (95%CI 1.15-3.99; I2= 57,44%). Conclusion: Many studies presented a high risk of bias; therefore, the actual effect of DH on one's quality of life remains uncertain.

Aim To evaluate the prevalence of untreated caries and its association with biological, individual, and environmental variables in independently-living elderly people. Methods This cross-sectional study included 72 elderly (≥60 years) patients of a university dental clinic in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Sociodemographic data, systemic diseases, medications, and free sugar intake were collected. Visible plaque, Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT), and Decayed and Filled Root (DFR) indexes were assessed through clinical examination. Unstimulated saliva was collected to determine salivary flow, pH, and buffering capacity. Descriptive analysis and multilevel logistic regression analysis were performed following a dental caries theoretical model ( p <0.05, 95% CI). Results The mean DMFT and DFR were 24.44 (SD=4.59) and 3.21 (SD=2.93), respectively. The prevalence of untreated caries was 61.11%. In the adjusted multilevel regression model involving 1639 teeth, untreated dental caries was significantly associated with the presence of biofilm (OR = 1.84; 95% CI: 1.24–2.74), salivary buffering capacity (OR = 0.87; 95% CI: 0.77–0.99) and per capita income (OR = 0.06; 95% CI: 0.004–0.74). Conclusion The experience of dental caries was widespread among independently-living elderly patients, and its variability was best explained by the presence of biofilm, reduced salivary buffering capacity, and low per capita income. A comprehensive assessment is needed of the biological, individual, and environmental factors related to the presence of dental caries in independently-living elderly people.
