Abstract Introduction: Learning disability has a significant relevance and can generate negative social impacts on the future of an individual if not corrected in time. Phoniatrics is an area of otorhinolaryngology responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, and referring these cases for therapy and/or complementing the multidisciplinary diagnosis. Objective: To evaluate in school-aged children the association between the application of a set of tests used in the phoniatric assessment and complaints of academic difficulties. To identify which tests would show the main association with academic performance when applied individually. Methods: Blind, cross-sectional study, subdivided into 4 stages. In the 1st stage, 66 children in the third year of elementary school were submitted to the set of tests of skills applied by the phoniatrician; in the 2nd stage, the physician asked the educators about complaints of academic difficulties regarding the students; in the 3rd stage the students’ Portuguese language school grade was obtained and in the 4th stage an analysis was made between the data. Results: The educator identified complaints of academic difficulties in 27.2% of the 66 students. There was a statistically significant association between academic difficulties and the following tests of skills: dictation of words and pseudowords, dictation of words, dictation of pseudowords, rhyming, phonemic synthesis, and in the reading test; fluency, intonation and comprehension of the text and morals were analyzed in the reading test. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the tests selected to comprise the final model, showing greater association with the academic difficulty complaint were: dictation of words, intonation in reading and comprehension of the morals of the story. Conclusion: The tests identified as the most relevant in identifying academic difficulties were dictation of words, intonation in reading and comprehension of the morals of the story. However, the other tests that were part of the phoniatric consultation allowed the observation of the individual and their functioning abilities, leading to a better assessment of the case, regarding aspects not directly related to the pedagogical one.

Abstract Introduction: Reading is a highly refined skill that encompasses two main components: decoding graphic symbols and understanding the written message. These aspects generally develop together, but reading comprehension is a much more complex process, sustained not only by the identification of written words and vocabulary but also by language systems, such as syntax and general knowledge. Although there is a well-established technique for performing the Phoniatric assessment, there is no common use of tests that assess reading comprehension or the association of this information with other assessment data. Objective: The objective of this study is, in the context of the Phoniatric consultation, to evaluate the reading and retelling in children with relevant reading difficulties and to correlate the decoding and comprehension problems with the alterations observed in auditory and visual perceptual tests, pointing out the evidence that best contributed to the differential diagnosis of these subjects. Methods: Starting from a population of 301 children enrolled in the 4th and 5th grades of elementary school, 13 children with evident reading and writing difficulties were evaluated regarding the reading and retelling tasks and separated into groups according to the problem of decoding, fluency, and comprehension. Reading performance was correlated with the performance in visual and auditory perceptual tests and based on the similarity analysis, the tests considered to be the most relevant in the diagnosis process of these children were identified. Result: The results suggest that the tasks: naming of figures, repetition of numbers in reverse order, figure copying, syllabic synthesis, phonemic synthesis, rhyme, and phonemic manipulation altogether contribute to diagnosis and multidisciplinary intervention aspects. Conclusion: Some tasks are more relevant to the diagnostic process of children with complaints of learning difficulties in reading.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a presença de anemia em pacientes com úlceras crônicas de membros inferiores a partir do perfil e dos índices hematimétricos. Método: Estudo seccional realizado em um hospital universitário do Rio de Janeiro. Amostra composta por 64 participantes com úlceras de membros inferiores e tempo de evolução maior que 12 semanas. Dados coletados entre maio/2016 e dezembro/2017, a partir de análises hematológicas, registros nos prontuários e em formulário de avaliação da ferida. Resultados: 36 (56,2%) eram do sexo masculino; 38 (59,4%) entre 60 e 80 anos; 56 (87,5%) com doenças crônicas e 52 (81,2%) com úlceras venosas. Média de 6 anos de úlcera ativa. Detectou-se anemia em 36 (56,2%), sendo 27 (75%) normocrômica e normocítica; 14 (38,8%) apresentavam anemia carencial registrada em prontuário. Conclusão: A baixa concentração de hemoglobina é recorrente entre os participantes, caracterizando um quadro de anemia cujo perfil revela congruência ao da anemia da doença crônica.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the presence of anemia in patients with chronic lower limb ulcers based on profile and hematometric indices. Method: This is a cross-sectional study carried out in a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro. The sample was composed of 64 participants with lower limb ulcers and evolution time greater than 12 weeks. Data was collected between May/2016 and December/2017 from hematological analyses, records from medical records, and wound assessment form. Results: 36 (56.2%) were male; 38 (59.4%) between 60 and 80 years old; 56 (87.5%) with chronic diseases and 52 (81.2%) with venous ulcers. 6 years mean of active ulceration. Anemia was detected in 36 (56.2%), 27 (75%) of which were normochromic and normocytic; 14 (38.8%) had deficiency anemia recorded in their medical chart. Conclusion: The low hemoglobin concentration is recurrent among the participants characterizing an anemia condition, whose profile reveals congruence to the anemia of chronic disease.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Evaluar la presencia de anemia en pacientes con úlceras crónicas de miembros inferiores desde el perfil e índices hematimétricos Método: Este estudio seccional transcurrió en un hospital universitario de Río de Janeiro, con una muestra de 64 participantes con úlceras en los miembros inferiores y tiempo de evolución superior a 12 semanas. Los datos se recopilaron entre mayo/2016 y diciembre/2017 investigando los análisis hematológicos, registros en las historias clínicas y formularios de evaluación de la herida. Resultados: 36 (56,2%) eran hombres; 38 (59,4%) tenían entre 60 y 80 años; 56 (87,5%) padecían de enfermedades crónicas y 52 (81,2%), de úlceras venosas. El promedio era de 6 años de úlcera activa. Se detectó anemia en 36 (56,2%), siendo que en 27 (75%) era normocrómica/normocítica; 14 (38,8%) presentaban anemia carencial registrada en la historia clínica. Conclusión: La baja concentración de hemoglobina es recurrente entre los participantes caracterizando un cuadro de anemia que coincide con el de anemia de enfermedad crónica.

RESUMO Objetivo Identificar relações entre a utilização sistemática do Microfone Remoto (MR) em sala de aula de estudantes com deficiência auditiva e características das escolas e dos professores. Método Foram analisados 120 sujeitos, entre cinco e 17 anos, com deficiência auditiva que foram adaptados MR em um Serviço de Saúde credenciada pelo Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). Também foram sujeitos, professores de usuários de MR. Realizou-se uma análise de prontuários e no momento que os sujeitos compareceram para acompanhamento foi realizado entrevista com os pais/responsáveis para caracterizar rotina de utilização do MR na escola. Foram realizados contatos telefônicos e visitas presenciais em algumas escolas. Resultados Quanto ao uso, observa-se que a maioria dos sujeitos utilizava o dispositivo na escola. Aqueles que não utilizavam involuntariamente e voluntariamente consistiu na minoria dos sujeitos. Houve uma similaridade no padrão do Speech Intelligibility Index -SII dos sujeitos que ‘usam’ e ‘não usam involuntariamente’ o MR. Houve diferença significativa entre o tipo de escola e o nível de escolaridade, a maioria dos sujeitos que frequentavam escola regular e estavam matriculados no ensino fundamental I tendem a usar mais o dispositivo. Conclusão A maioria dos sujeitos faz uso do MR na escola. O nível educacional do estudante também foi um fator que interferiu na adesão ao uso dos MR, com maior adesão em estudantes do Ensino Fundamental I. Os dados sugerem que a articulação entre serviço de saúde e escola favorece a utilização do MR, entretanto quando essa relação é intermediada pelos pais, outros fatores acabam interferindo no uso sistemático no cotidiano da escola.

ABSTRACT Purpose To identify relationships between Remote Microphone System (RMS) use in the classroom and the schools’ and teachers’ characteristics. Methods We analyzed 120 subjects aged 5 to 17 years with hearing loss who had received an RMS from a health service accredited by the Unified Health System (SUS). The teachers of RMS users were the other subjects in the study. We analyzed the patients’ medical records and interviewed their parents/guardians at the follow-up visit to verify issues related to the RMS and its use at school. We contacted the schools over the phone and visited some of them. Results Of the students, 54% used the device at school; 22% involuntarily did not use it; and 24% voluntarily did not use it. The Speech Intelligibility Index pattern of those who used the RMS was similar to those who involuntarily did not use it. There was a significant difference between the type of school and educational level – 86% of regular school students and elementary school students tend to use the device more often (62%). Conclusion Most subjects use the RMS at school. The students’ educational level also interfered with the adherence to RMS use, as elementary school students had a higher adherence. The data suggest that the coordination between health services and schools favors RMS use. However, when the parents mediate this relationship, other factors interfere with the systematic RMS use in the school routine.

RESUMO O milho roxo é fonte de pigmentos naturais que podem ser utilizados para diversas finalidades industriais, no entanto a contaminação dos solos por alumínio afeta sua produção. Diante do exposto, o objetivo foi avaliar o efeito da toxidez por alumínio associado a diferentes temperaturas sobre a germinação das sementes e desenvolvimento inicial de plântulas de milho roxo, por meio da germinação, crescimento inicial das plântulas e indicadores de danos oxidativos. O delineamento utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, com esquema fatorial 5×2 (concentrações × temperaturas). Os parâmetros avaliados foram porcentagem de germinação, comprimento e massa seca total, da parte aérea, do sistema radicular e indicadores de danos oxidativos (clorofilas totais, a, b, carotenoides totais e peroxidação de lipídeos) na fase de plântula. As concentrações de cloreto de alumínio não interferem na germinação de sementes de milho roxo. O comprimento, massa seca, clorofilas totais, a, b e carotenoides totais das plântulas normais de milho roxo sofrem redução e acréscimos na peroxidação lipídica com o aumento das concentrações de alumínio. O estresse por toxidez do alumínio em plântulas de milho roxo é detectado pelos indicadores bioquímicos (clorofilas totais, a, b, carotenoides totais e peroxidação de lipídeos).

ABSTRACT Purple maize is a source of natural pigments that can be used for various industrial purposes; however, soil contamination from aluminium affects production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of aluminium toxicity associated with different temperatures on seed germination and initial development in purple maize seedlings, through germination, initial seedling growth and indicators of oxidative damage. The experimental design was completely randomised in a 5×2 factorial scheme (concentrations × temperatures). The parameters under evaluation were germination percentage, length and total dry weight of the root system and shoots, and indicators of oxidative damage (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll, total carotenoids and lipid peroxidation) at the seedling stage. Aluminium chloride concentrations have no effect on seed germination in purple maize. With increasing aluminium concentrations, the length, dry weight, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll and total carotenoids of normal purple maize seedlings are reduced, while lipid peroxidation increases. Aluminium toxicity stress in purple maize seedlings can be detected using biochemical indicators (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll, total carotenoids and lipid peroxidation).

Abstract In Brazil, rabies occurs mainly within an urban cycle, in which dogs and bats are reservoirs. This paper aims to report the occurrence of rabies in Callithrix sp. in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In June 2019 a hybrid specimen was referred for diagnosis. The Direct Fluorescent Antibody, Mouse Inoculation, and Polymerase Chain Reaction tests were positive. A phylogenetic analysis was compatible with antigenic variant 3, characteristic of Desmodus rotundus. New studies should be undertaken to elucidate the real role of callitrichids in the urban rabies cycle.

RESUMO Objetivo Este estudo teve por objetivo comparar os achados videoendoscópicos da deglutição orofaríngea em distintas consistências de alimento na Esclerose Lateral Amiotrófica (ELA). Método Estudo clínico retrospectivo com amostra de conveniência. Foram incluídos 20 indivíduos com diagnóstico de ELA e disfagia orofaríngea confirmada por avaliação clínica e objetiva de deglutição, independentemente do tipo, bulbar ou esquelética, e tempo de diagnóstico neurológico, 13 do sexo masculino e sete do sexo feminino, faixa etária variando de 34 a 78 anos, média de 57 anos. Foram analisados os achados da videoendoscopia de deglutição (VED) nas consistências líquida (N=18), líquida espessada (N=19) e pastosa (N=20) no volume de cinco ml. Os achados sobre escape oral posterior, resíduos faríngeos, penetração laríngea e/ou aspiração foram comparados nas três consistências de alimento e a análise estatística utilizou o teste ANOVA de Friedman. Resultados Não foi encontrada alteração na sensibilidade laríngea nessa população. Não houve diferença estatística significativa entre as consistências de alimento na presença de escape oral posterior, penetração e/ou aspiração. Houve diferença estatística significativa somente com resíduos faríngeos na consistência líquida espessada e pastosa na ELA. Conclusão Dentre os achados videoendoscópicos da deglutição na ELA, somente o resíduo faríngeo teve maior frequência na dependência da consistência de alimento.

ABSTRACT Purpose This study aimed to compare the fiberoptic endoscopic findings of oropharyngeal swallowing of distinct food consistencies in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Methods This was a retrospective clinical study of a convenience sample of 20 individuals (13 males and seven females aged 34 to 78 years old) with a diagnosis of ALS and oropharyngeal dysphagia confirmed by clinical and objective evaluation of swallowing, regardless of the bulbar or skeletal type and of the time of neurological diagnosis. The fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) of the liquid (N = 18), thickened liquid (N = 19) and pureed samples (N = 20) in a volume of 5 ml were analyzed. Data related to posterior oral spillage, pharyngeal residues, laryngeal penetration and/or aspiration after swallowing the three food consistencies were analyzed statistically by the Friedman ANOVA test. Results No impairment of laryngeal sensitivity was found in this population. There was no statistically significant difference in posterior oral spillage, penetration and/or aspiration between food consistencies. There was a statistically significant difference only related to pharyngeal residues of the thickened liquid and pureed consistency. Conclusion Among the fiberoptic endoscopic findings of swallowing in ALS, only pharyngeal residues had a higher frequency depending on the consistency of food.

RESUMO Objetivo Estabelecer relações entre o desempenho em tarefa de reconhecimento de palavras com e sem sentido e grau e configuração da perda auditiva, utilizando valores de Índices de Inteligibilidade de Fala (SII) como indicadores, em crianças com deficiência auditiva. Método Foram estabelecidos os SII para sons de entradas de 55 e 65 Decibéis Nível de Pressão Sonora (dBNPS) de dez crianças com perda auditiva neurossensorial usuárias de aparelho de amplificação sonora individual bilateralmente que têm a linguagem oral como principal modalidade de comunicação. As crianças foram submetidas à tarefa de repetição de palavras com e sem sentido em duas ou três diferentes intensidades. As emissões foram analisadas de acordo com o Protocolo Word Association for Syllable Perception (WASP). Na análise dos dados, o SII foi comparado com os resultados obtidos em cada critério de análise. Resultados Para o desempenho em palavras, houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os dois tipos de estímulo em 55dBNPS. Para o desempenho em consoantes e ponto de articulação, houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os tipos de estímulos em 65 e 55dBNPS e também entre as intensidades de 65 e 55 dBNPS nas palavras sem sentido. Conclusão De modo geral, não houve regularidade na relação entre capacidade auditiva e desempenho em tarefas de percepção da fala. Os resultados sugerem que o desempenho nas tarefas de reconhecimento de palavras sem sentido tem maior relação com o índice de inteligibilidade do que as palavras com sentido, possivelmente por limitar as estratégias de fechamento semântico pelo sujeito.

ABSTRACT Purpose To establish the relationship between the performance on word recognition tasks, using words with and without sense and degree, and the configuration of hearing loss, by using Speech Inteligibility Index (SII) values as indicators, in children with hearing loss. Methods SII were established for 55 and 65 Decibel of Sound Pressure Level (dB SPL) input sounds of ten children presenting bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), adapted with bilateral hearing aids, and who have oral language as the main mode of communication. The children were submitted to a word and nonsense-word repetition task of two or three intensity degrees. Their productions were analyzed according to the Word Association for Syllable Perception (WASP) Protocol. In the data analysis, the values of SII were compared with the results obtained in each analysis criterion. Results Pertaining to the words, there was statistically significant difference between the two types of stimuli in 55 dBSPL. As for the performance of consonants and point of articulation, there was a statistically significant difference between stimuli types in 65 and 55 dB SPL, and between intensities 65 and 55 dB SPL in nonsense words. Conclusion Overall, there was no regularity in the relationship between hearing ability and performance in speech perception tasks. The results suggest that performance in the nonsense words recognition tasks was more related to intelligibility index than to words with meaning, possibly because it limits semantic closure strategies by the subject.

RESUMO: Um coelho de seis anos de idade da raça Fuzzy Lop foi encaminhado a um hospital veterinário devido a uma queixa de claudicação. Além de uma subluxação vertebral, duas estruturas radiopacas e bem delimitadas foram identificadas pela avaliação radiográfica. Em um exame ultrassonográfico, as massas foram caracterizadas como formações parenquimatosas e heterogêneas, apresentando mineralização difusa e com formação de artefatos de reverberação, sugerindo a presença de gás. Estas duas estruturas foram extirpadas durante uma laparotomia e Clostridium tertium foi isolado. Este é o primeiro relato de infecção por C. tertium em um animal de estimação.

ABSTRACT: A 6-year-old Fuzzy Lop rabbit was referred to a veterinary hospital with a complaint of lameness. In addition to a vertebral subluxation, two radiopaque and well-defined structures were revealed by radiographic evaluation. Ultrasonographically, the masses were characterized as parenchymal structures with diffuse mineralization and formation of reverberation artifacts, suggesting presence of gas. These two structures were excised during a laparotomy and Clostridium tertium was isolated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of C. tertium infection in a pet animal.

RESUMO Objetivo Comparar valores do índice de inteligibilidade de fala amplificado, para diferentes entradas de sinal de fala (75, 65 e 55 dBNPS), gerados no processo de verificação dos aparelhos de amplificação sonora, nos diferentes graus e configurações de perdas auditiva. Métodos Foram selecionadas 41 crianças com idades entre 3 e 80 meses, totalizando 78 orelhas (quatro orelhas foram excluídas). As perdas auditivas foram classificadas conforme grupos de audibilidade e intervalos do índice de inteligibilidade de fala. Foram analisados 234 valores do índice de inteligibilidade de fala para os estímulos de fala e estes foram também analisados, em relação aos grupos e intervalos de audibilidade. Resultados Os grupos de audibilidade se deslocaram entre os intervalos do índice de inteligibilidade de fala, indicando a variação, conforme o nível de apresentação do sinal de entrada. Duas equações foram geradas para prever valores do índice de inteligibilidade de fala a partir do valor deste índice para o sinal de entrada de 65. Conclusão Menores níveis de pressão sonora do estímulo de fala produzem menores índices de inteligibilidade de fala. Esta diferença é mais acentuada nos deficientes auditivos, que apresentam valores do índice de inteligibilidade de fala de 65 entre 36% e 55%.

ABSTRACT Purpose To compare aided speech intelligibility index (SII) values in different speech signal inputs (75, 65, and 55 dBNPS), generated from the verification process of hearing aids, under different hearing loss severities and configurations. Methods 41 children aged between three and 80 months old were selected, totalizing 78 ears (after exclusion of four ears). Hearing loss was classified according to audibility groups and SII intervals. Two hundred and thirty-four (234) SII values were analyzed as per speech stimulus and with regard to groups and audibility intervals. Results Movement of audibility groups along SII intervals was observed, which indicates variation associated with the input signal intensity, as well as with the distance between the sound source and the hearing aid microphone. Two equations were generated to predict SII values from input signal SII65. Conclusion Lower levels of speech stimulus sound pressure produce lower levels of speech intelligibility. This difference is more pronounced in hearing-impaired persons, who present SII values between 36 and 55%.

RESUMO Objetivo estabelecer relações entre valores do índice de inteligibilidade de fala - SII gerados na verificação dos aparelhos de amplificação sonora programados conforme regra prescritiva DSLm[i/o]v5 e uma proposta de classificação de indivíduos que considere a associação de grau e configuração de perdas auditivas. Método foram selecionadas 41 crianças com idades entre 4 e 80 meses, totalizando 78 orelhas para análise. Foram considerados os limiares auditivos nas frequências 250, 500, 1000, 2000 e 4000 Hz e analisados valores de SII para os sinais de entrada 65 dB NPS, obtidos na verificação dos AASI no equipamento Verifit®Audioscan. Resultados as perdas auditivas foram classificadas em cinco grupos homogêneos quanto às características audiológicas (grau e configuração audiométrica) e heterogêneos entre si. A partir dos grupos, determinaram-se três intervalos de valores de SII. Foram determinadas equações para classificação da perda auditiva conforme grupos e equações para determinação de valores de SII ajustado. Conclusão o valor de SII pode ser considerado um indicador da audibilidade para sons de fala para diferentes características de perdas auditivas e nortear avalições de comportamento auditivo. O SII tem relação mais forte com a associação das variáveis grau e configuração audiométrica, quando comparado com sua relação com o grau da perda auditiva isoladamente.

ABSTRACT Purpose To establish the relationship between speech intelligibility index (SII) values generated at the verification of hearing aids programmed according to DSLm [i/o] v5 prescription rule and a proposed individual classification that considers the combination of hearing loss degree and configuration. Methods Forty-one children aged between 4 and 80 months were selected, totaling 78 ears for analysis. We considered hearing thresholds at the frequencies of 250, 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz; and analyzed values of the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) for the input signal of 65 dB SPL obtained during the verification of hearing aids using the equipment Verifit®Audioscan. Results Hearing losses were classified into five homogeneous groups regarding audiometric degree and configuration. The groups were heterogeneous when compared to each other. From the groups, three ranges of SII values were determined. Equations were developed for classification of hearing loss according to groups and for determination of the adjusted SII values. Conclusion The SII value is a useful indicator of audibility for speech sounds in different characteristics of hearing losses, and can guide observations of auditory skills. The SII has stronger relationship with the association of the audiometric degree and configuration when compared with degree of hearing loss alone.

RESUMO Objetivo Adaptação semântica e cultural de versão preliminar em português do questionário LittlEars® em famílias de crianças com deficiência auditiva. Métodos Instrumento administrado como entrevista ou questionário, em tradução validada do Questionário LittlEars® em português em pais de crianças com deficiência auditiva com até dois anos de idade auditiva. Comentários, dúvidas, sugestões, exemplos, críticas ou dificuldades dos pais foram utilizadas para elaboração da versão adaptada. Foi então realizada reunião para brainstorming com grupo de especialistas, para validação da versão final. Resultados Trinta e sete sujeitos, pais ou responsáveis de 32 crianças, responderam ao questionário. Somente quatro pais preferiram responder no formato de questionário, enquanto 28, em entrevista. No formato entrevista, houve dificuldade de compreensão em diversos itens. Após análise e discussão dos comentários das famílias, foi proposta uma versão modificada. Conclusão As modificações nos itens do questionário estiveram relacionadas a vocabulário, expressões idiomáticas e exemplos desconhecidos. Os resultados obtidos com o questionário LittlEars® no grupo estudado variaram conforme a idade auditiva e o Índice de Inteligibilidade de Fala (Speech Intelligibility Index - SII), o que sugere que a tradução adaptada tem sensibilidade para medir as habilidades auditivas. São necessários estudos com a versão proposta, em uma população maior, visando sua validação final.

ABSTRACT Purpose Semantic and cultural adaptation of a preliminary Portuguese version of the questionnaire LittlEars® in families of children with hearing loss. Methods Instrument administered as an interview or questionnaire, using a validated translation of LittlEars® Questionnaire in Portuguese with parents of children with hearing loss up to two years of hearing age. Parent’s comments, questions, suggestions, examples, comments or difficulties were used for development of the adapted version. A brainstorming session with a group of experts was held to validate the final version. Results Participants were 37 individuals who answered the questionnaire, parents of 32 children. Only four parents preferred to answer the questionnaire format, while 28 preferred to answer it as an interview. In the interview format, parents had difficulty understanding different items. Upon review and discussion of the comments of the families, a modified version was proposed. Conclusion Changes in the questionnaire items were related to vocabulary, idiomatic expressions and unknown examples. The results of the questionnaire LittlEars® varied depending on hearing age and Speech Intelligibility Index - SII, suggesting that the adapted translation has sensitivity for measuring the hearing abilities. Other studies should apply the new version and final validation.

INTRODUÇÃO: Aquisição e desenvolvimento da linguagem demandam cuidados exigindo compreensão dos aspectos orgânicos e psíquicos no diagnóstico e tratamento. Assim, parceria entre foniatra e outros profissionais é, muitas vezes, determinante de um prognóstico favorável.OBJETIVO: Caracterizar clínica e epidemiologicamente os distúrbios de comunicação em crianças na prática clínica.MÉTODO: Coorte transversal histórica. Estudo epidemiológico retrospectivo de 297 prontuários de crianças atendidas em consulta foniátrica no período entre 1976 a 2005. Variáveis: origem do encaminhamento, gênero, média da idade, diagnóstico e conduta para tratamento.RESULTADOS: 66% foram do gênero masculino e 34% do feminino com média de idade de 6,4 anos. Maior número de encaminhamentos foi realizado por fonoaudiólogos (38%). A queixa predominante era de alterações na fala 35% e ressaltam-se os diagnósticos na área da fala, linguagem e fluência (49,5%). Do total destacaram-se os encaminhamentos para: 28,2% fonoterapia e 11,8% psicoterapia.CONCLUSÃO: A população atendida foi predominantemente masculina, o diagnóstico aponta maior incidência em quadros de comprometimento na fala, linguagem e fluência e o tratamento mais indicado foi fonoterapia.

INTRODUCTION: Language acquisition and development require an understanding of physical and psychosocial aspects during diagnosis and treatment. At this point, a partnership between phoniatric physicians and other health professionals is often a determinant for favorable prognosis.OBJECTIVE: To identify the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of a pediatric population attending a phoniatric clinical practice.METHODS: Study design: Cross-sectional cohort. Retrospective, epidemiological study of 297 children, seen in phoniatric appointments between 1976 and 2005. Outcome variables were referral origin, gender, age, mean age, diagnosis, and treatment approach.RESULTS: 66% were male and 34% were female, with a mean age of 6.4 years. The largest number of referrals for phoniatric treatments came from speech therapists (38%). The predominant complaint was alteration in speech (35%); the diagnostics in speech, language, and fluency (49.5%) are noteworthy. Considering the total of the patients analyzed, 28.2% were referred for speech therapy and 11.8% for psychotherapy.CONCLUSION: The studied population is predominantly male, the diagnosis points to a higher incidence in cases of impairment in speech, language, and fluency; the most common treatment was speech therapy.

Objetivo Avaliar a sensibilidade do IRDI-questionário para pais, para rastreamento de transtornos do espectro do autismo. Métodos Participaram do estudo 72 sujeitos, familiares de crianças na faixa etária de 2 anos e 11 meses a 7 anos e 7 meses, divididos em dois grupos: grupo pesquisa e grupo controle. O IRDI-questionário foi aplicado nos dois grupos estudados e a CARS-BR foi aplicada no grupo pesquisa. Os dados foram submetidos à análise estatística e, para a validade, foi realizado o coeficiente de correlação de Pearson, entre o IRDI-questionário e a CARS-BR, somente para o grupo pesquisa. Na definição do ponto de corte do escore gerado pelo instrumento IRDI-questionário, foi utilizada a curva ROC e calculados os valores de sensibilidade, especificidade e valor preditivo positivo. Na análise de concordância para o IRDI-questionário, foi utilizado o coeficiente de Kappa e concordância total. Resultados O IRDI-questionário mostrou-se de fácil aplicação, rapidez no preenchimento e baixo custo. A análise da consistência interna das questões do instrumento apresentou bom índice. Na comparação com a CARS-BR, apresentou correlação positiva. A análise da curva ROC identificou bom desempenho. Conclusão A avaliação da sensibilidade do instrumento, para fins de rastreamento de transtornos do espectro do autismo, mostrou bons índices, a partir do ponto de corte estabelecido no estudo.

Purpose To assess the sensitivity of the Clinical Risk Indicators for Early Childhood Development (IRDI) questionnaire for parents in identifying autism spectrum disorders. Methods Seventy-two subjects, which comprised parents of children aged 2 years 11 months to 7 years 7 months, participated in the study divided into two groups, namely the study and control groups. The IRDI questionnaire was administered in both groups, and the CARS-BR was applied in the study group. The data were subjected to statistical analysis, and the Pearson correlation coefficient between the IRDI questionnaire and CARS-BR was performed only for the study group to calculate validity. In defining the cutoff score generated by the IRDI questionnaire, the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used, and sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value were calculated. In the reliability analysis for the IRDI questionnaire, the Kappa coefficient and overall concordance was used. Results The IRDI questionnaire was easy to use, quick to complete, and inexpensive. Analysis of the internal consistency of the questions of the instruments presented good content. The IRDI questionnaire was positively correlated with the CARS-BR. The ROC curve analysis revealed good performance. Conclusion The evaluation of the sensitivity of the instrument for purposes of identifying autism spectrum disorders showed good performance according to the established cutoff point in the study.
