Abstract Diseases induced by phytopathogenic fungi generate considerable economic losses and severe damage to agricultural crops. The objective of this research was to evaluate the inhibitory effect in vitro of carbon nanotubes with extracts of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens on the mycelial development of Rhizoctonia solani (Rs), Fusarium solani (Fs), Colletotrichum acutatum (Ca) and Alternaria alternata (Aa). Data were analyzed using Probit, ANOVA analysis in a completely randomized design of five treatments with 20 repetitions and Tukey test (p ≤ 0.05). B. amyloliquefaciens extracts at high doses, inhibited 100% of mycelial growth but by using carbon nanotubes with extracts at low doses, a similar inhibitory effect of Rs, Fs, Ca and Aa (100, 90, 90 and 60%) respectively. The use of carbon nanotubes with extracts of B. amyloliquefaciens are an efficient alternative in the in vitro control of phytopathogenic fungi.

Resumen Las enfermedades inducidas por hongos fitopatógenos generan pérdidas económicas considerables y daños severos a los cultivos agrícolas. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar el efecto inhibitorio in vitro de nanotubos de carbono con extractos de Bacillus amyloliquefaciens sobre el desarrollo micelial de Rhizoctonia solani (Rs), Fusarium solani (Fs), Colletotrichum acutatum (Ca) y Alternaria alternata (Aa). Se analizaron los datos mediante análisis Probit, ANOVA en un diseño completamente al azar de cinco tratamientos con 20 repeticiones y prueba de Tukey (p ≤ 0.05). Los extractos de B. amyloliquefaciens a dosis altas, inhibieron el 100% del crecimiento micelial pero al usar nanotubos de carbono con extractos a dosis bajas, se logró un efecto inhibitorio similar de Rs, Fs, Ca y Aa (100, 90, 90 y 60%) respectivamente. El uso de nanotubos de carbono con extractos de B. amyloliquefaciens son una alternativa eficiente en el control in vitro de hongos fitopatógenos.

Abstract Anthracnose is the disease caused by the phytopathogenic fungus of the genus Colletotrichum, that decreases quality and yield. The objective of this work was evaluated botanical active principles (PABs) for its control. The pathogen was isolated, the identification was made morphologically, the pathogen identity confirmation was carried out by means of molecular technique (ITS-PCR). Later, in vitro tests were carried out with D-limonene, eucalyptol and β citronellol. Data was analyzed by probit analysis, ANOVA and Tukey test (p ≤ 0.05). The mycelial growth, percentage of sporulation and germination of conidia were measured. The Colletotrichum acutatum was identified. In the in vitro evaluation, β citronellol showed the greatest effectiveness in the different variables, with inhibition intervals of 29 to 89% in mycelial growth, from 61 to 100% in sporulation, and germination from 96 to 100%. Thus, β citronellol represents a botanical alternative in vitro for anthracnose control.

Resumen La antracnosis es una enfermedad causada por el hongo fitopatógeno del género Colletotrichum, que disminuye la calidad y rendimiento del aguacate. El objetivo del estudio fue determinar la actividad antifúngica de D-limoneno, β-citronelol y eucaliptol en Colletotrichum acutatum de aguacate. Se realizó el aislamiento del patógeno, la identificación morfológica, y molecular mediante técnica (ITS-PCR). Posteriormente, se realizaron pruebas in vitro con D-limoneno, eucaliptol y β citronelol. Los datos se analizaron mediante análisis probit, con ANVA y prueba de Tukey (p ≤ 0.05). Se midió crecimiento micelial, porcentaje de esporulación y germinación de conidios. Se identificó a la especie Colletotrichum acutatum. En la evaluación, β citronelol mostró la mayor efectividad, con intervalos de inhibición de 29 a 89% en el crecimiento micelial, de 61 a 100% en la esporulación y 96 a 100% en la germinación. Por tanto, β citronelol representa una alternativa botánica para el control in vitro de la antracnosis.

Abstract Early blight is a disease caused by Alternaria alternata in tomato and other vegetables. This fungus affects the leaves, stem bases and fruits, causing economic losses. Different fungicides are currently used to control fungal diseases; however, these increase production costs and pose a risk to health and the environment. Therefore, the use of biological products, including phytocystatins, represent an attractive alternative for the control of plant diseases. Phytocystatins are widely distributed proteins in plants, which inhibit the activity of cysteine-like proteases and affect the growth and development of some phytopathogenic fungi. Preliminary work showed in vitro tests that amaranth cystatin produced recombinantly in Escherichia coli, inhibited the growth and development of some phytopathogenic fungi, including Alternaria alternata. In the present work, the effect of foliar application of amaranth cystatin in the prevention and control of early blight in tomato plants was determined. Greenhouse tests carried out in the municipalities of Irapuato and Celaya, in the state of Guanajuato (Mexico), during 2018, show that the foliar application of amaranth cystatin (168 µg and 335 µg of cystatin/plant) prevents and controls the development of blight early in different tomato varieties in crops under commercial greenhouse production. These results show the potential of cystatin in the control of fungal diseases.

Resumen El tizón temprano es una enfermedad producida por Alternaria alternata en tomate y otras hortalizas. Este hongo afecta las hojas, bases de los tallos y a los frutos, produciendo pérdidas económicas. Diferentes fungicidas se utilizan actualmente para el control de enfermedades producidas por hongos, sin embargo, estos aumentan los costos de producción y representan un riesgo para la salud y el medio ambiente. Por lo tanto, el uso de productos biológicos, incluyendo las fitocistatinas, representan una alternativa atractiva para el control de enfermedades en plantas. Las fitocistatinas son proteínas ampliamente distribuidas en las plantas, las cuales inhiben la actividad de proteasas tipo cisteína y afectan el crecimiento y desarrollo de algunos hongos fitopatógenos. En trabajos preliminares se demostró en ensayos in vitro que la cistatina de amaranto producida de manera recombinante en Escherichia coli, inhibió el crecimiento y desarrollo de algunos hongos fitopatógenos, incluyendo Alternaria alternata. En el presente trabajo se determinó el efecto de la aplicación foliar de la cistatina de amaranto en la prevención y control del tizón temprano en plantas de tomate. Ensayos en invernaderos realizados en los municipios de Irapuato y Celaya, del estado de Guanajuato (México), durante 2018, muestran que la aplicación foliar de cistatina de amaranto (168 µg y 335 µg de cistatina/planta) previene y controla el desarrollo del tizón temprano en diferentes variedades de tomate en cultivos en producción comercial en invernadero. Estos resultados muestran el potencial de la cistatina en el control de enfermedades producidas por hongos.

Abstract. White rot caused by the fungus Sclerotium cepivorum causes great economic losses in the genus Allium nationwide. In this work, three rhizobacteria with antagonistic effect on this fungus were isolated, identified and characterized. 656 bacteria were isolated in soil samples from the rhizosphere of onion plants (Allium cepa). And in vitro antagonism to S. cepivorum was also evaluated. 23 of these isolates showed antagonistic activity with inhibition halos greater than 5 mm; three of these were greater than 20 mm; these were selected and identified as Gram positive bacilli, belonging to the genus Bacillus, B. amyloliquefaciens and B. subtilis. These rhizobacteria showed enzymatic activity of 1-aminocyclopropane 1-carboxylate deaminase, production of indolacetic acid and siderophores, as well as NaCl tolerance (up to 7.5%). Temperatures of 24 and 37 °C and humidity (50, 75 and 100%) did not affect bacterial development. Of the cell-free extracts obtained in different growth phases, the highest antifungal activity on S. cepivorum was obtained with the stationary phase extracts (16 to 24 h of incubation). Due to the attributes of these rhizobacteria they could be considered as an alternative for the control of S. cepivorum in onion.

Resumen. La pudrición blanca causada por el hongo Sclerotium cepivorum ocasiona grandes pérdidas económicas en el género Allium a nivel nacional. En este trabajo se aislaron, identificaron y caracterizaron tres rizobacterias con efecto antagonico sobre este hongo. Se aislaron 656 bacterias en muestras de suelo de la rizosfera de plantas de cebolla (Allium cepa). Y se evaluó el antagonismo in vitro a S. cepivorum. 23 de estos aislados mostraron actividad antagonica con halos de inhibición superiores a 5 mm; tres de estos fueron mayores a 20 mm, los cuales se seleccionaron, y se identificaron como bacilos Gram positivos, pertenecientes al género Bacillus, B. amyloliquefaciens y B. subtilis. Estas rizobacterias presentaron actividad enzimática de 1-aminociclopropano 1-carboxilato desaminasa, producción de ácido indolacético y sideróforos, tolerancia a NaCl (hasta 7.5%). Las temperaturas de 24 y 37 °C y humedad (50, 75 y 100%) no afectaron el desarrollo bacteriano. De los extractos libres de células obtenidos en diferentes fases de crecimiento, la mayor actividad antifungica sobre S. cepivorum se obtuvo con los extractos de la fase estacionaria (16 a 24 h de incubación). Por los atributos de estas rizobacterias podrían ser consideradas como una alternativa para el control de S. cepivorum en cebolla.

Abstract In this study, the effects of environmental conditions (pH and temperature) on the growth rate and the inhibitory effect of different strains of Bacillus subtilis on Rhizoctonia solani were evaluated. Strains of B. subtilis were grown in potato infusion broth. The physiological behavior and the growth rate (dN / dt) of the strains were analyzed under different pH and temperature conditions. The strains behaved differently, which allowed establishing optimum and suboptimal growth conditions for each strain. Cell-free supernatants obtained under different growth conditions were used in a quantitative test of in vitro antagonist activity against R. solani. This study showed that the inhibitory effect of the strains occurs mainly in the stationary phase.

Resumen En este estudio, se evaluaron los efectos de las condiciones ambientales (pH y temperatura) sobre la tasa de crecimiento y el efecto inhibitorio de diferentes cepas de Bacillus subtilis sobre Rhizoctonia solani. Las cepas de B. subtilis se cultivaron en caldo de infusión de papa. Se analizaron el comportamiento fisiológico y la tasa de crecimiento (dN / dt) de las cepas bajo diferentes condiciones de pH y temperatura. Las cepas mostraron un comportamiento diferente, lo que permitió establecer las condiciones óptimas y subóptimas de crecimiento para cada cepa. Los sobrenadantes exentos de células obtenidos en diferentes condiciones de crecimiento se usaron en una prueba cuantitativa de actividad antagonista in vitro frente a R. solani. Se demostró que el efecto inhibitorio de las cepas se presenta principalmente en la fase estacionaria.

Abstract Strains of Bacillus subtilis increase plant growth and yield. Consequently, the application of Mexican native strains of B. subtilis on greenhouse-grown melon (Cucumis melo L.) plants should induced a significant improvement on plant development and fruit quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of LAL-36, BEB-23, BEB-22 and BEB-13 B. subtilis strains, native to Mexico, on melon plant development and fruit quality. The strains were placed separately into the rhizosphere of melon plants under greenhouse conditions. Plants were grown in clinoptilolite type zeolite. Five treatments were evaluated: four inoculated with one of the four B. subtilis strains and one control without bacterial inoculum. A completely randomized design with nine repetitions was used in the experiment. The data were statistically analyzed with a one way-ANOVA and a mean comparison using the Tukey’s test. The root wet and dry weight depicted a sustained tendency with the greatest values and with significant statistical differences with LAL-36 and BEB-22 strains. The greatest values for shoot dry weight were 164.76 g for the LAL-36 and 162.14 g for BEB-22. The highest value for root dry weight was 64.55 g with the LAL-36 strain. The greatest values in height and foliar area (482.22 cm2 and 398.41 cm2) were observed in the plants treated with BEB-23 strain. Utmost fruit yield (97.76 t ha-1) was observed in the plants inoculated with LAL-36 strain; this strain also induced exceptional fruit quality, although the differences were lower compared to the other. The inoculation of B. subtilis LAL-36 strain on melon plants caused the most outstanding effects during the production of greenhouse-grown melon fruits, increasing the yield in 20 %. Therefore, using Mexican native strains of B. subtilis is possible to obtain high quality melon fruits with increased profits.

Resumen Las cepas de Bacillus subtilis aumentan el crecimiento y el rendimiento de las plantas. Por lo tanto, la aplicación de cepas nativas mexicanas de B. subtilis en melón cultivado en invernadero (Cucumis melo L.) debería inducir una mejora significativa en el desarrollo de la planta y la calidad del fruto. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de las cepas nativas de México de B. subtilis, LAL-36, BEB-23, BEB-22 y BEB-13, en el desarrollo de la planta de melón y en la calidad del fruto. Las cepas se colocaron por separado en la rizósfera de las plantas de melón en condiciones de invernadero. Las plantas se cultivaron en zeolita tipo clinoptilolita. Los tratamientos fueron cinco: cuatro inoculados con una de las cuatro cepas de B. subtilis y un testigo sin inóculo bacteriano. El diseño experimental fue completamente al azar con nueve repeticiones. Los datos se analizaron estadísticamente con ANDEVA de una vía y prueba Tukey para comparar las medias. Con las cepas LAL-36 y BEB-22, los pesos fresco y seco de la raíz mostraron tendencia constante de los valores mayores y diferencias estadísticamente significativas. Los valores mayores de peso seco del vástago fueron 164.76 g con LAL-36 y 162.14 g con BEB-22. El valor mayor de peso seco de la raíz fue 64.55 g con la cepa LAL-36. Los valores mayores en altura y área foliar (482.22 cm y 398.41 cm2) se observaron en las plantas tratadas con la cepa BEB-23. El rendimiento máximo del fruto (97.76 t ha-1) se observó en las plantas inoculadas con la cepa LAL-36; esta cepa también propició calidad excepcional del fruto, aunque las diferencias fueron menores comparadas con los otros tratamientos. La inoculación de la cepa B. subtilis LAL-36 en plantas de melón causó los efectos más destacados durante la producción de frutos con el cultivo en invernadero, aumentando el rendimiento en un 20 %. Por lo tanto, al usar cepas nativas mexicanas de B. subtilis se pueden obtener frutos de melón de alta calidad con mayores ganancias.

Abstract. The objective was to determine differences in antioxidant enzyme activity and total phenol concentration in Mexican lime plants (Citrus aurantifolia (Christm.) Swingle), Persian lime (Citrus latifolia Tanaka); and Valencia sweet orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck). Infected under natural field conditions with Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CaLas), in Bustamante, Tamaulipas, Mexico. The presence of CaLas was determined by qPCR. We determined the enzymatic activity of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), which is activated by pathogen attack; the peroxidase involved in wall lignification in response to infection; the α-amylase which degrades starch and accumulates in vascular tissue; and phenolic compounds involved in defense functions. A contrasts analysis was performed. Total protein concentration showed significant differences between species (P<0.0001). With a mean of 6.1 and 6.37 mg of protein per g of fresh tissue for infected Mexican lime trees, and sweet orange negative CaLas. The peroxidase activity presented a significant difference for Persian lime (P=0.0341), with a mean of 1.96 U.mg of protein-1. In sweet orange, higher α-amylase activity was observed in CaLas infected trees (1.19 U.mg protein-1). The concentration of PAL and total phenols did not show significant differences between species. In the present study it was observed that CaLas influences the enzymatic activity of Citrus species.

Resumen. El objetivo fue determinar diferencias en la actividad enzimática antioxidante y la concentración de fenoles totales en plantas de limón mexicano (Citrus aurantifolia (Christm.) Swingle), limón persa (Citrus latifolia Tanaka); y naranja dulce Valencia (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck), infectadas bajo condiciones naturales de campo con Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CaLas), en Bustamante, Tamaulipas, México. Se determinó la presencia de CaLas por qPCR; la actividad enzimática de fenilalanina amonio liasa (PAL), que se activa ante el ataque de patógenos; peroxidasa que interviene en la lignificación de paredes como respuesta a la infección; α-amilasa que degrada el almidón y se acumula en el tejido vascular, y compuestos fenólicos que cumplen funciones de defensa. Se realizó un análisis de contrastes. La concentración de proteínas totales mostró diferencias significativas entre especies (P<0.0001). Con una media de 6.1 y 6.37 mg de proteínas por g de tejido fresco para árboles infectados de limón mexicano; y naranja dulce negativa a CaLas. La actividad peroxidasa presentó diferencia significativa para limón persa (P=0.0341), con una media de 1.96 U.mg de proteína-1. En naranja dulce se observó mayor actividad de α amilasa en los árboles infectados por CaLas (1.19 U.mg de proteína-1). La concentración de PAL y fenoles totales no mostraron diferencias significativas entre especies. En el presente estudio se observó que CaLas influye en la actividad enzimática de cítricos.

This study shows the effect of some inoculants of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the initial development Cedrela odorata L; for this, a bioassay was conducted with different inoculum sources of two tropical forests where this species is distributed in Veracruz state. Four treatments were applied: T1, direct inoculation with a spore consortium; T2: inoculation with mycorrhizal roots from field; T3: without inoculation; T4: native soil not sterile. (T1, T2 and T3 in native sterilized soil). The analyzed variables were dry aerial and root biomass, height, diameter, leaflets number, spores number, and colonization percentage. Statistical analysis showed significant differences between inoculants from medium tropical forest (MTF), where T4 was the best results followed by T2, while T3 observed the lowest values. Although the inoculants of high tropical forest (HTF), do not have statistical significance, the results were similar to those in the MTF. These results showed a good micorrhizal relationship between these fungi and C. odorata; for this reason, it is recommended to reproduce this fungus to use in plants production in order to obtain plants best adapted to natural conditions.

El presente estudio muestra el efecto de algunos inoculantes de hongos micorrízicos arbusculares (HMA) sobre el desarrollo inicial de Cedrela odorata L.; para ello, se realizó un bioensayo con diferentes fuentes de inóculo procedentes de dos ecosistemas tropicales donde se distribuye esta especie en el estado de Veracruz. Se utilizaron cuatro tratamientos: T1, inoculación directa con un consorcio de esporas; T2, inoculación con raíces colonizadas de campo; T3, sin inoculación (testigo); T4, suelo nativo no estéril (T1, T2 y T3 en suelo nativo esterilizado). Las variables evaluadas fueron: biomasa seca aérea y radicular, altura, diámetro, número de foliolos, número de esporas y porcentaje de colonización. Los resultados mostraron diferencia estadística en las variables de crecimiento de los inoculantes provenientes de la selva mediana subperennifolia (SMS), donde T4 arrojó los mejores resultados, seguido por T2, mientras que T3 presentó los valores más bajos. Aunque los inoculantes de selva alta perennifolia (SAP) no mostraron diferencias estadísticas, su comportamiento fue similar a aquellos de la SMS. Lo anterior muestra la fuerte relación micorrízica entre los HMA y C. odorata; ante ello, se sugiere reproducir y utilizarlos en la producción de plántulas a fin de lograr una mejor adaptación al establecerlas en condiciones naturales.

Four new records of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for Mexico are described and discussed, collected from rhizosphere of red cedar (Cedrela odorata) in two tropical forest of Veracruz. Rhizophagus custos was obtained from a perennial tall forest; while Glomus arenarium, G. aureum and G. hyderabadensis were obtained from a perennial medium forest.

Se describen cuatro nuevos registros de hongos micorrizógenos arbusculares para México, los cuales fueron extraídos de la rizósfera del cedro rojo (Cedrela odorata), en dos ecosistemas tropicales del estado de Veracruz. Rhizophagus custos se recolectó en el ecosistema de selva alta perennifolia; mientras que Glomus arenarium, G. aureum y G. hyderabadensis en la selva mediana subperennifolia.

Garlic in Mexico is one of the most profitable crops and has a number of plant health problems, among which are those caused by fungi. The genus Fusarium has shown greater presence for the past eight years, and has been associated with new symptoms in the garlic cultivars of Aguascalientes and Zacatecas region, called basal rot. Given the importance of this disease in the garlic producing area, we raised the need to identify Fusarium species involved in this disease morphologically and molecularly. With these methods, we identified four species, namely Fusarium verticilloides, F. acuminatum, F. acuminatum, F. solani and F. oxysporum.

El ajo en México es uno de los cultivos más rentables y presenta una serie de problemas fitosanitarios entre los que destacan los ocasionados por hongos. El género Fusarium, ha mostrado mayor presencia durante los últimos ocho años, y se le ha asociado con la nueva sintomatología en los cultivares de ajo de la región de Aguascalientes y Zacatecas, denominada pudrición basal. Dada la importancia de esta enfermedad en la zona productora de ajo, se planteó identificar morfológica y molecularmente las especies de Fusarium involucradas en esta enfermedad. Bajo estos métodos se identificaron cuatro especies a saber: Fusarium verticilloides, F. acuminatum, F. solani y F. oxysporum.

To explore the molecular mechanisms that prevail during the establishment of the arbuscular mycorrhiza symbiosis involving the genus Glomus, we transcriptionally analysed spores of Glomus intraradices BE3 during early hyphal growth. Among 458 transcripts initially identified as being expressed at presymbiotic stages, 20% of sequences had homology to previously characterized eukaryotic genes, 30% were homologous to fungal coding sequences, and 9% showed homology to previously characterized bacterial genes. Among them, GintPbr1a encodes a homolog to Phenazine Biosynthesis Regulator (Pbr) of Burkholderia cenocepacia, an pleiotropic regulatory protein that activates phenazine production through transcriptional activation of the protein D isochorismatase biosynthetic enzyme phzD (Ramos et al., 2010). Whereas GintPbr1a is expressed during the presymbiotic phase, the G. intraradices BE3 homolog of phzD (BGintphzD) is transcriptionally active at the time of the establishment of the arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis. DNA from isolated bacterial cultures found in spores of G. intraradices BE3 confirmed that both BGintPbr1a and BGintphzD are present in the genome of its potential endosymbionts. Taken together, our results indicate that spores of G. intraradices BE3 express bacterial phenazine biosynthetic genes at the onset of the fungal-plant symbiotic interaction.

In the present study, aerial biomass output and seed yield, viability, germination, and dormancy were evaluated in Melinis repens (Natal grass) growing at different locations in Aguascalientes, México. Four grazing excluded sites with high population of Natal grass were selected in the municipalities of El Llano, Jesús María, San Francisco de los Romo and Calvillo. In October 2008 and 2009, forage and seed were harvested by hand. Forage and spikelet yield and seed number were estimated. Seed viability, germination and dormancy were evaluated at different post harvest times. Significant differences were found in aerial biomass output, with means from 2,913 to 1,736 kg DM ha-1 in 2008 and from 1,488 to 707 kg DM ha-1 in 2009 (lower rainfall); Calvillo site showed higher production. Seed yield showed differences (P<0.05), ranging from 1,239 to 2,401 seeds m-2 in 2008 and from 1,452 to 3,906 seeds m-2 in 2009. Seed viability means went from 32 to 54 %, without significant differences. In Calvillo, seed germination (25 %) was higher than in the other sites, and was similar to viability at 18 mo post harvest (43 %), but in El Llano, germination was lower (2 %) because of higher dormancy, with low increment even at 24 mo post harvest, reaching only 15 %. This grass presented relatively high levels of aerial biomass and seed yield, and these factors can favor invasive ability of this species. Seed yield and dormancy were greater in unfavorable moisture conditions.

En este estudio se evaluó la producción de biomasa aérea y la viabilidad, germinación, latencia y producción de semilla de Melinis repens en diferentes localidades de Aguascalientes, México. Se seleccionaron cuatro sitios: El Llano, Jesús María, San Francisco de los Romo y Calvillo, con alta población de pasto rosado y excluidos de pastoreo. En octubre de 2008 y 2009 se cosechó manualmente forraje y semilla. Se determinó la producción de forraje, producción de espiguillas y número de semillas por metro cuadrado. Se valoró la viabilidad, germinación y latencia de la semilla a diferentes tiempos después de la cosecha. La producción de biomasa aérea difirió (P<0.05) con promedios de 2913 a 1736 kg MS ha-1 en 2008 y de 1488 a 707 kg MS ha-1 en 2009 (menos lluvioso), con mayor producción en Calvillo. La producción de semillas varió (P<0.05) de 1,239 a 2,401 semillas m² en 2008 y de 1,452 a 3,906 semillas m² en 2009. La viabilidad en la semilla fue de 32 a 54 %, sin diferencias significativas. Calvillo presentó mayor germinación (25 %), la cual fue aumentando y a los 18 meses casi toda la semilla viable germinó (43 %). En El Llano la germinación fue menor (2 %) debido a la latencia, con poco aumento aún después de 24 meses, llegando a 15 %. Este pasto presentó niveles altos de producción de biomasa aérea y semilla, lo que puede favorecer su capacidad invasora, aunque también puede ser una ventaja para la conservación de suelos. La semilla presentó mayor producción y latencia en condiciones de escasez de agua.

Lilium sp. is among the most important species in the production of cut-flowers in Mexico, but its cultivation is based on the use of significant amounts of chemical fertilizers, so it is desirable to minimize the impact on the ecosystem without compromising the product quality. This study was conducted to evaluate the main effects and interactions of phosphorus, Glomus fasciculatum and Bacillus subtilis, on the commercial quality of flowers of Lilium oriental hybrid Showwinner under greenhouse conditions. In two consecutive cycles between 2007 and 2008, 12treatments inafactorial arrangement 2*3*2 were studied using analysis of variance, comparing treatment means with the test of least significant difference (LSD, p = 0.05) and main component analysis. G. fasciculatum, 22 µg ml-¹ of phosphorus and B. subtilis were positively correlated with root dry weight, plant height, stem dry weight, petal width, flower diameter, flower dry weight, life of the flower, flowering time and concentration in the stems of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), potassium (K), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca). These results show that the rhizosphere microorganisms used, may interact positively to promote growth and development of the plant and improve the quality of Lilium sp. with 22 µg ml-1 of phosphorus.

Lilium sp. se ubica entre las especies de mayor importancia en la producción de flores de corte en México, pero su cultivo se basa en la utilización de cantidades importantes de fertilizantes químicos, por lo que es deseable minimizar el impacto sobre el ecosistema sin disminuir la calidad del producto. Este estudio se realizó con el objetivo de evaluar los efectos principales y las interacciones de fósforo, Glomus fasciculatum y Bacillus subtilis, sobre la calidad comercial de flores de Lilium híbrido oriental Showwinner en condiciones de invernadero. En dos ciclos consecutivos entre 2007 y 2008 se estudiaron 12 tratamientos bajo un arreglo factorial 2*3*2 aplicando análisis de varianza, comparación de medias de tratamientos con la prueba de la diferencia mínima significativa (DMS, p= 0.05) y análisis de componentes principales. G. fasciculatum, 22 µgml-1 de fósforo y B. subtilis tuvieron correlación positiva con peso seco de raíz, altura de la planta, peso seco deltallo, ancho de pétalo, diámetro de la flor, peso seco de la flor, vida de la flor, período de floración y concentración en los tallos de zinc (Zn), cobre (Cu), potasio (K), nitrógeno (N), fósforo (P) y calcio (Ca). Estos resultados muestran que los microorganismos rizósfericos utilizados, pueden interactuar positivamente para promover el crecimiento y el desarrollo de la planta y mejorar la calidad de Lilium sp. con 22 µg ml-1 de fósforo.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) not only influence plant growth and development, but also they tolerate water deficiencies and protect plants against different soil pathogens. The objective of this paper was to compare the effect of two AMF inoculants (Glomus hoi-like and a concentrated species, “Consorcio selva”) on sorghum plant development and growth under water stress conditions. To reach this goal, a greenhouse experiment was conducted under a randomized complete design, determining soil and leaf water potentials, stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rate at different times, as well as plant height, stem diameter, dry weight, mycorrhizal colonization percentage and leaf phosphorus content at the end of the experiment. In general, results showed a plant growth and development reduction under water stress conditions, differently from mycorhized treatments, independently of water deficit. The highest values of morpho-agronomic variables were observed in the treatments using concentrated species, whereas similar responses were recorded in physiological variables. Plants inoculated with concentrated species were the best that endured water stress and recovered from it, which could be associated to the occurrence of synergic effects among the species making them up, strengthening one to each other.

Los hongos micorrízicos arbusculares (HMA) no solo influyen en el crecimiento y desarrollo de las plantas, sino también en la tolerancia a condiciones de déficit hídrico y en la protección frente a diferentes patógenos del suelo. El presente trabajo se realizó con el objetivo de comparar el efecto de la inoculación con HMA (Glomus hoi-like) y un conglomerado de especies (Consorcio selva) sobre el crecimiento y desarrollo de plantas de sorgo sometidas a estrés hídrico. Para dar cumplimiento al objetivo, se llevó a cabo un experimento en condiciones de invernadero bajo un diseño completamente aleatorizado, en el que se determinaron los potenciales hídricos del suelo y las hojas, la conductancia estomática y tasa fotosintética en diferentes momentos, así como la altura de las plantas, el diámetro del tallo, la masa seca, el porcentaje de colonización micorrízica y contenido de fósforo en follaje al finalizar el experimento. Los resultados mostraron que, en general, en las plantas sometidas al estrés hubo una disminución del crecimiento y el desarrollo, no así en los tratamientos micorrizados, independientemente del déficit hídrico. Los valores superiores de las variables morfoagrónomicas se observaron en los tratamientos donde se empleó el Consorcio selva y en las variables fisiológicas se obtuvieron respuestas similares. Las plantas inoculadas con el Consorcio selva fueron las que mejor soportaron y se recuperaron del déficit hídrico, lo que pudo estar asociado a la ocurrencia de efectos sinérgicos entre las diferentes especies que lo conforman, potenciándose unas a otras.

Bacillus subtilis BEB-13bs, a plant growth promoting rhizobacteria, has improved tomato firmness. Since firmer fruits are be expected to be more resistant to spoilage microorganisms and to have a longer shelf-life, root inoculation with this strain could be an alternative to extend tomato shelf-life. Thus, fruit texture-related changes were studied in tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) inoculated with Bacillus subtilis BEB-13bs. Treatments were: 1) non-inoculated control treatment (CTL); 2) PGPR inoculated treatment (BS13). Evaluation was made at different ripening stages. Pericarp firmness and activity of poligalacturonase (PG), the major cell wall polyuronide degrading enzyme in tomato, were measured. The expression pattern of ripening-related genes was also examined. Pericarp firmness was significantly greater in light red (LR) fruits in the BS13 treatment compared to those in the CTL treatment. PG activity was reduced significantly by the BS13 treatment in LR and red (R) fruits compared to the CTL treatment. The expression pattern of Aco, gene coding for 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase (ACO), an enzyme that has a regulatory role in ethylene production during fruit ripening, showed a significant decrease in accumulation of the transcript at the R stage in the BS13 treatment compared to that in the CTL treatment. A shelf-life test was performed storing fruits at 25-27 °C for 10 d at the end of this trial, and fruits in the BS13 treatment were significantly firmer than those in the CTL treatment. Moreover, the percentage decay (non-acceptable fruits) was significantly lower in the BS13 treatment than in the CTL treatment. Additionally, the BS13 treatment promoted a significant increase in fruit fresh weight, size and yield per plant, compared to the CTL treatment. The present results support the development of an environment-friendly production tool based on PGPR for improving fruit quality through enhanced firmness and shelf-life.

Bacillus subtilis BEB-13bs, una rizobacteria promotora de crecimiento en plantas, ha mejorado la firmeza del tomate. Dado que frutos más firmes tendrían más resistencia al deterioro por microorganismos y una mayor vida de anaquel, la inoculación de la raíz con esta cepa podría ser una alternativa para extender la vida anaquel del tomate. Asi en el presente trabajo se estudiaron los cambios relacionados con la textura de frutos de tomate (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) provenientes de plantas inoculadas con Bacillus subtilis BEB-13bs. Los tratamientos fueron: 1) tratamiento testigo sin inocular (CTL); 2) tratamiento inoculado con Bacillus subtilis BEB-13bs (BS13). Los frutos fueron evaluados en distintos estadios de maduración. Se midió la firmeza del pericarpio y la actividad de poligalacturonasa (PG), enzima ma-yoritaria de la pared celular implicada en la degradación de poliurónidos. También se realizó un análisis de expresión de genes relacionados con la maduración. La firmeza del pericarpio de los frutos en estadio rojo claro (LR) fue significativamente mayor en el tratamiento BS13 que aquella de los frutos del tratamiento CTL. El tratamiento BS13 redujo significativamente la actividad de PG de los frutos en los estados LR y rojo (R) comparado con el tratamiento CTL. El patrón de expresión de Aco, gen que codifica para la oxidasa del ácido aminociclopropano carboxílico (ACO), enzima reguladora de la síntesis de etileno durante la maduración, mostró una disminución significativa en la acumulación del transcrito en frutos en el estadio R del tratamiento BS13 comparado con aquél de los frutos del tratamiento CTL. Se realizó una prueba de vida de anaquel almacenando frutos a 25-27 °C por 10 d; al final de esta prueba; los frutos del tratamiento BS13 resultaron significativamente más firmes que los del tratamiento CTL. Además, el porcentaje de frutos no aceptables fue significativamente inferior en el tratamiento BS13 que en el tratamiento CTL. Adicionalmente, el tratamiento BS13 promovió un incremento significativo del peso fresco y la longitud del fruto, así como del rendimiento por planta, comparado con el tratamiento CTL. Los resultados apoyan el desarrollo de una alternativa de producción ambientalmente amigable basada en la aplicación de BPCV, para mejorar la calidad de frutos en términos de firmeza y vida de anaquel.
