Abstract Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) has excellent properties, such as high biocompatibility and an elastic modulus similar to bone, which makes it a suitable biomaterial. When modified with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and hydroxyapatite (HA), its workability and bioactivity is enhanced, and this makes it of great importance in medicine. This study investigates a better combination of process parameters to manufacture sulfonated PEEK/HA (SPEEK/HA) membranes for biomaterials. Chemical, thermal, and biological analyses were carried out on all samples. The sulfonated structure was observed to enhance wettability, adhesion, and cell viability. Furthermore, an increase in the degree of sulfonation facilitated their workability as required for biomaterials; making them suitable for osseointegration. Besides, the SPEEK/HA membranes presented cell adhesion, confirming the viability to use as biomaterial. This study presents a cheap alternative method to easily process biomaterials of improved workability.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to quantify linear and angular morphological measurements of male and female horses participating in the Freio de Ouro competition. This study represents the first scientific evaluation of the biometrics of the Criollo breed, providing essential information for the evaluation of the development of the breed and supporting objective selection. We examined linear and angular measurements of 634 Criollo horses participating in the Freio de Ouro competition in 2011 and 2012, including height, chest circumference, cannon bone circumference, body length, metatarsus length, croup length, chest width, head length, dorsal neck length, throat circumference, and angles of the croup, scapula, and hock. Statistical analysis showed that males had a greater average cannon bone circumference (19.76 cm) than females (18.95 cm) and a greater throat circumference (77.66 cm for males and 73.30 cm for females). None of the other traits evaluated differed between genders. The average height (141.73 cm for males and 141.41 cm for females) was close to the minimum requirement for the breed standard. Subjective observations suggesting that animals of this breed are decreasing in size were not confirmed in this study, as the height and other evaluated measures did not differ between competing horses less or more than seven years of age. Although these measurements in isolation do not indicate the qualities of individual animals, they serve as valuable auxiliary elements for selection work, showing breed tendencies and providing objective data to support technical decisions of judges regarding conformation.

ABSTRACT This study used path analysis to establish the direct, indirect, and total effects of body linear and angular measurements on subjective morphological scores of the 247 Criollo horses that participated in their most important performance event, Freio de Ouro, in 2012. Freio de Ouro is the only event of the Criollo breed that considers morphology. Measurements of wither height, thoracic girth, cannon bone girth, body length, metatarsus length, croup length, shoulder width, head length, neck length, and upper neck girth, and the angles of rump, shoulder, and hock were taken. These morphometric measurements collectively explained 83% of the variation in morphological score. The measurements with the greatest total effects on score were neck length (correlation coefficient = 0.2300), upper neck girth (0.2100), angle of rump (–0.1600), thoracic girth (0.1400), shoulder width (0.1400), body length (0.1100), croup length (0.1100), shoulder angle (–0.1100), and metatarsus length (0.1000). These results mean that these variables have the highest association with morphological evaluation by referees. This is the first scientific study of the correlation of morphological measurements with judge evaluation in Criollo horses.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between fruit traits and their direct and indirect effects on the content of ascorbic acid and carotenoids in peaches and nectarines. The traits fruit mass (FM); equatorial diameter (ED); suture diameter (SD); polar diameter (PD); pulp firmness (FIR); soluble solids (SS); titratable acidity (TA); SS/TA ratio; contents of ascorbic acid (AA) and carotenoids (CT); and skin and pulp color were evaluated in 28 peach cultivars, and two nectarine cultivars. The phenotypic correlation coefficients were estimated (rf), and after multicollinearity diagnosis, unfolding was carried out in direct and indirect effects of the explanatory variables in the response variable by using path analysis. The strongest correlations were found between FM, SD, ED, and PD, and between carotenoid content and °h pulp. The traits considered in the path diagrams are not the main determinants of the ascorbic acid content. The yellow color of the pulp has the potential for indirect selection for carotenoid content.

Para avaliar o desempenho reprodutivo de vacas de corte submetidas à indução/sincronização de cio, foram utilizadas 42 vacas da raça Aberdeen Angus com condição corporal 3 (escala de 1-5) sob manejo extensivo. A produção de leite foi estimada pelo método pesagem-mamada-pesagem. Nos exames ginecológicos, utilizou-se aparelho de ultra-sonografia e palpação trans-retal. Foram considerados fatores fixos nível de produção de leite (acima e abaixo da média de produção das vacas), gestação, condição reprodutiva pré-acasalamento (CRPA), anestro superficial (tônus uterino, folículos > 10 mm e ausência de CL) e anestro profundo (ausência de tônus uterino, folículos < 10 mm e ausência de CL) e a resposta à indução/sincronização de cio (RISC). As variáveis analisadas foram os pesos pré-parto, ao parto, ao acasalamento e à concepção, o peso à desmama, o ganho médio de peso diário do parto ao desmame e a produção de leite total. A condição reprodutiva pré-acasalamento foi influenciada pelos pesos pré-parto e ao parto, comprovando que o melhor desempenho pré-parto e ao parto favorece o restabelecimento da atividade reprodutiva em vacas com condição corporal (CC) moderada no período pós-parto. A classificação da condição reprodutiva pré-acasalamento em vacas de corte pode ser um recurso para determinar o desempenho reprodutivo de vacas de corte submetidas à indução/sincronização de cio, uma vez que vacas em anestro superficial tendem a apresentar melhor resposta ao protocolo. Em vacas de corte com condição corporal moderada, o desempenho ponderal pré-parto influencia a condição reprodutiva pré-acasalamento, aumentando a probabilidade de melhor desempenho reprodutivo.

To assess the reproductive performance of beef cows submitted to estrus induction/synchronization, 42 Aberdeen Angus cows with body condition 3 (1-5 scale) under extensive management were used. The milk production was estimated through the weight-suckling-weight method. For gynecological examinations, ultrasound equipment and trans-rectal palpation were used. The milk production level (above and below the average production of cows), pregnancy, prebreeding reproductive condition (CRPA), surface anoestrus (uterine tone, follicles > 10 mm and absence of CL) and deep anoestrus (no uterine tone, follicles <10 mm and absence of CL) and the estrus induction/synchronization response (RISC) were considered as constant factors. The variables analyzed were the pre-delivery, delivery weight, mating and conception weights, weaning weight, the average daily weight gain from birth to weaning and total milk production. The prebreeding reproductive condition influenced the pre-birth and birth weights, showing that the better pre-birth and birth performance favors the restoration of reproductive activity in cows with moderate body condition (CC) in the post-partum period. The classification of the pre-breeding reproductive condition in beef cows can be a resource to determine the reproductive performance of beef cows submitted to estrus induction/synchronization, since cows in surface anoestrus tend to have better response to the protocol. In beef cows with moderate body condition, the pre-birth weight performance affects the prebreeding reproductive condition, increasing the likelihood of better reproductive performance.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as causas de infertilidade em vacas de corte repetidoras de serviço, relacionando sinais clínicos com características laboratoriais post-mortem. A identificação dos fatores que afetam o desempenho reprodutivo pode fornecer uma fundamentação científica para auxiliar na decisão quanto ao destino de vacas repetidoras de serviço; tratamento ou descarte. Este estudo tem abordagem diferencial dos trabalhos que contemplam somente a ocorrência de alterações post-mortem do trato genital. A correlação das alterações post-mortem com o histórico clínico dos animais pode auxiliar na determinação da causa de repetição de serviço de animais sem alteração clínica. Foram utilizadas 130 vacas e novilhas cruzas que não conceberam depois de, no mínimo, três serviços. Todos os animais foram identificados e submetidos à exame clínico e coleta de sangue para cariotipagem. Foram incluídos no estudo apenas animais com histórico de falha reprodutiva. Os animais foram encaminhados para um abatedouro e foram realizados exames post-mortem como inspeção macroscópica do trato genital, cultura bacteriológica e estudo histopatológico do útero. Alterações uterinas foram predominantes seguidas de alterações de oviduto e ovário. Foi observada uma maior freqüência de alterações histopatológicas de útero que alterações clínicas. Os animais utilizados no estudo apresentaram alta freqüência de patologia uterina (95%), tanto inflamatórias (42,9%) quanto degenerativas (59,7%). Patologias diagnosticadas somente por exames post-mortem e laboratoriais como oclusão tubária (29,8%) e trissomia do par sexual também foram observadas (1/10 vacas). Portanto, este estudo evidencia a importância do exame laboratorial no diagnóstico das causas de infertilidade de vacas com histórico de repetição de serviço.

The objective of this study was to investigate the causes of the repeat breeder syndrome comparing clinical signs and postmortem findings in beef cows. The identification of factors affecting the reproductive tract can support decisions as to whether treatment of repeat breeder cows is justifiable than culling. Since all animals were submitted to clinical examination before being slaughtered, this study has a differential approach when compared with others, where genital tracts from abattoir were examined. In this study, 130 crossbred cows and heifers that have failed to conceive after three or more services were identified, submitted to a clinical examination and blood collection for karyotyping and sent to an abattoir. postmortem examinations included macroscopic evaluation of the genital tracts, bacteriology and histopathology of the uterus. Uterine alterations were predominant followed by oviduct and ovarian pathologies. Histopathological examination was more sensitive as a diagnostic tool than clinical examination. Repeat breeder cows had a predominance of uterine abnormalities (95%), such as inflammatory (42.9%) and degenerative (59.7%) conditions. Oviduct abnormalities were found in 29.8 % of animals. Furthermore, 1 out 10 karyotyped cows showed aneuploidy. Thus, this study stressed the importance of laboratory exams in the diagnosis of the causes of infertility of repeat breeder cows.

Com o objetivo de caracterizar o desempenho produtivo e reprodutivo de duas categorias de vacas de corte submetidas à indução/sincronização de estro, foram utilizadas 42 vacas em lactação e 60 vacas solteiras da raça Aberdeen Angus, de tamanho similar e condição corporal moderada (CC3, escala de 1 a 5), manejadas exclusivamente em campo nativo, no período de setembro de 2005 a abril de 2006 no município de Aceguá/RS. Para os exames ginecológicos durante o experimento, foi utilizado aparelho de ultra-som e palpação retal. Como fator fixo, foi considerada a categoria das vacas (CATV), considerando-se três grupos, vacas solteiras cíclicas (VSC), ou seja, fêmeas que falham em conceber e permanecem na propriedade até o próximo acasalamento, vacas em lactação em anestro superficial (VLAS) e vacas em lactação em anestro profundo (VLAP). Como variáveis resposta, foram considerados peso das vacas pré-acasalamento (PPRA), pós-acasalamento (PPOA), à concepção (PC), o ganho de peso médio diário durante o acasalamento (GMD), resposta ao protocolo de indução/sincronização de cio (RISC) e gestação. A categoria da vaca demonstrou efeito (P<0,0001) sobre as variáveis de peso, em que as VSC apresentaram um melhor desempenho ponderal do que VLAS e VLAP. A RISC demonstrou ser altamente influenciada (P<0,0001) pela categoria de vaca, em que 85, 45 e 35% das vacas responderam à indução/sincronização de cio nos grupos VSC, VLAS e VLAP, respectivamente. A gestação apresentou diferença (P<0,0001) entre VSC e vacas em lactação, com 96,7, 45,5 e 30,0%, nos respectivos grupos VSC, VLAS e VLAP. Vacas solteiras apresentam um desempenho reprodutivo superior ao de vacas em lactação, evidenciado pela maior resposta ao protocolo de indução/sincronização de estro e índice de gestação. Contudo, 24% das vacas em lactação parecem estar bem adaptadas ao sistema de produção, demonstrando um desempenho produtivo e reprodutivo satisfatório à produção de bovinos de corte, sendo capazes de produzir adequadamente leite para o desenvolvimento dos terneiros, bem como conceber e produzir novamente um terneiro. A identificação desses animais pode influenciar positivamente o desempenho reprodutivo de vacas de corte em lactação.

The objective of this study was to characterize the reproductive performance of two cow categories submitted to estrus induction/synchronization. Forty two suckling and sixty non-suckling, Aberdeen Angus cows classified by uniformity of size and moderate body condition score (CC3 in a 1 to 5 scale), raised under range conditions in Aceguá/RS county, were evaluated between September 2005 and April 2006. The gynecological examination was made by ultrasonography and rectal palpation. Fixed factors analyzed were cow category alocated in one of three groups: cyclical non-suckling (VSC), cows that fail to conceive and remain in the farm until the next breeding season showing cyclical conditions, suckling light anestrus cow (VLAS) and suckling strong anestrus cows (VLAP). The following variables were evaluated: cow prebreeding weight (PPRA), at postbreeding (PPOA), at conception (PC), daily weight gain from breeding season (GMD), estrus induction/synchronization response (RISC) and pregnancy. Cow category showed effect (P<0.0001) on weight performance, where VSC showed better productive performance relate to the VLAS and VLAP groups. The RISC showed an affect for cow category (P<0.0001) in with 85, 45 e 35%, of animals in groups VSC, VLAS and VLAP respectively, responded to the estrus induction/synchronization protocol. The pregnancy rate showed difference (P<0.0001) between VSC and suckling cows, with 96.7, 45.5 e 30.0% in VSC, VLAS and VLAP, respectively. VSC showed better reproductive performance than suckling cows by showing better RISC and pregnancy rates. However, 24% of suckling cows showed superior adaptation, demonstrating a satisfactory productive and reproductive performance in beef cattle range system, with adequate milk yeld for the development of their calves and to conceive again. The indentification of such animals could influence positively the reproductive performance of suckling beef cows.

This work describes an overview of the use of chemicals in several commercial applications along the XXth century. The use of chemicals by men was largely empirical for many centuries, since there was no organized chemical and toxicological knowledge. During the XIXth century the chemical industry gained a crucial role in the development of technology, as evidenced by the extraordinary increase of new products and their incorporation into everyday life. Chemistry was considered a science capable of solving any problem, little regard being paid to the consequences of the widespread use of new chemicals. Efficiency was more important than safety and consumer information. From tragedies and the development of knowledge on toxicology men adopted more careful protocols before a new chemical was proposed for use. Modern life could not exist without the large-scale employment of a variety of chemicals but information on their responsible and conscious use is now essential. Products that were once considered the "last word in technology" have eventually proven dangerous to humans and the environment in the short or long time range. Previous knowledge on the toxicological dangers and the properties of a given substance or product before commercialization is necessary for safe handling.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar diferentes níveis de gordura na dieta de vacas em lactação, sobre a resposta superovulatória e qualidade embrionária. Foram utilizadas dezoito vacas Jersey (420±70,6kg de peso vivo; 22,2±1,7kg de leite) agrupadas em blocos de acordo com a data de parição e ordem de lactação e aleatoriamente distribuídas nos tratamentos. As dietas consistiram de: controle- dieta a base de milho e farelo de soja contendo 4,0% de extrato etéreo (EE); médio- dieta controle adicionada de sebo bovino para aumentar o extrato etéreo da dieta para 6,0% e alto- dieta controle adicionada de sebo bovino para se obter extrato etéreo de 8,0% na dieta. Todos os animais foram superovulados duas vezes (aos 90 e 130 dias pós-parto), sendo as coletas realizadas sete dias após a inseminação artificial (IA). As estruturas coletadas foram avaliadas para estágio de desenvolvimento e qualidade embrionária (IETS, 1999). Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas com relação ao número de estruturas coletadas, corpos lúteos, embriões de grau um e dois, e embriões de grau quatro. O grupo que recebeu alta (2,9±0,4) gordura apresentou maior número de embriões de grau três em relação aos grupos controle (0,2±0,4) e médio (0,0±0,5). A adição de sebo para aumentar o EE em dietas vacas lactantes não melhorou a resposta superovulatória e a qualidade embrionária.

This experiment aims at evaluating the effects of dietary fat to lactating dairy cows, on the superovulatory response and embryo quality. Eighteen high producing lactating Jersey cows (420±70.6kg of live weight, 22.2±1.7kg of milk/day) were grouped according to calving date and lactation order, and randomly assigned to one of the three treatment diets. The control group received a basic diet with corn and soybean bran, containing 4.0% ether extract, the medium group received the control diet with additional tallow to increase the ether extract content to 6.0% and the high group treatment received the control diet with additional tallow to increase the ether extract content to 8.0%. All cows were twice superovulated, at 90 and 130 days postpartum. The structures recovered (7 days after artificial insemination) were evaluated for developmental stage and quality grade (IETS, 1999). The results shows no difference on structures number, embryos grade one and two, grade four and corpora lutea number, for the tested treatments. The cows groups that receive high fat diet (2.9±0.4) had higher number of grade three embryos in relationship to control (0.2±0.4) and medium (0.0±0.5) groups. Addition of tallow to diets to increase EE levels to lactating cows did not increase the superovulatory response and embryo quality.

O objetivo deste experimento foi verificar o efeito da qualidade seminal e sua relação com a fertilidade no garanhão. Os dados foram obtidos de sete haras, incluindo 1198 éguas, 2013 ciclos e 3817 serviços, durante três temporadas consecutivas. A porcentagem de prenhez (P), porcentagem de prenhez por ciclo (P/C) e de serviço (P/S), estimadas para cada garanhão, foram usadas como variáveis dependentes. Adicionalmente, verificou-se o efeito da idade (<15 ou >15 anos) e categoria reprodutiva da égua (lactação, falhada ou virgem), sobre os índices reprodutivos. Garanhões com total de espermatozóides viáveis no ejaculado superior a 1,8 x 10(9), motilidade não inferior a 50% e percentual de normais acima de 60% (n=20) apresentaram melhor P (86% vs. 74%, p<0,01), P/C (54% vs. 45%), p<0,01) e P/S (28% vs. 22%, p<0,01) em relação aos garanhões cujas características foram inferiores (n=16). O percentual de espermatozóides normais correlacionou-se à P (0,33), P/C (0,50) e P/S (0,36), respectivamente. Além de a qualidade seminal, a idade e a categoria reprodutiva das éguas afetaram a fertilidade do garanhão. Esses resultados levam à conclusão de que a qualidade seminal interfere na fertilidade do garanhão; entretanto, outros fatores associados ao manejo reprodutivo, como a idade e a categoria reprodutiva das éguas, são importantes na relação entre qualidade seminal e fertilidade.

The objective of this experiment was to verify the effect of sperm quality and its relationship to fertility in stallion. The data was obtained from seven farms and included 36 stallions, 1198 mares, 2013 cycles and 3817 services, during three cosecutive breeding seasons. The overall pregnancy rate (P), pregnancy per cycle (P/C) and pregnancy per service (P/S), for each stallion were used as dependent variables. Additionally, the effect of age of mare (<15 or >15 years), mare status (lactating, barren and maiden) on fertility indexes was verified. Stallions with viable sperm counts higher than 1.8 x 10(9), motile sperm not lower than 50% and normals rate higher than 60% (n=20), exhibited better P (86% vs 74% p<0.01), P/C (54% vs 45%, p<0.01) and P/S (28% vs 22%) than stallions in which sperm characteristics above those standars (n=16). The normals rate was correlated to P (0.33), P/C (0.50) and P/S (0.36), respectively. In addition to sperm quality, age and status mares were affected the fertility of stallions. These results led to the conclusion that seminal quality affects equine fertility; however, other factors associated to reproductive management, age and status mares are important in the relationship between semen quality and fertility.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar efeitos de transtornos puerperais sobre a eficiência reprodutiva e produtiva de vacas da raça Holandês de uma estação experimental, durante 24 anos. Foram coletados dados produtivos e reprodutivos de 350 vacas. Todos os dados foram submetidos à análise descritiva. As variáveis dependentes: intervalo entre partos (IEP), intervalo parto concepção (IPC), intervalo parto primeiro cio (IPPC), número de crias (NC) e produção de leite (PL) foram submetidas a análise de variância para determinação dos efeitos da ocorrência de transtornos puerperais (aborto, natimorto, distocia e retenção de placenta) e de mastite. A idade ao primeiro cio (IdPC) foi de 29,4 meses, a idade ao primeiro parto (IdPP) de 37,1 meses e a longevidade (L) de 69,7 meses. O IEP apresentou média de 14,6 meses, o IPPC de 97,0 dias e o IPC de 150,7 dias. O intervalo entre cios (IEC) apresentou média de 48,2 dias, sugerindo falhas na detecção de cios. Foi observado efeito significativo (P<0,05) da ocorrência de aborto sobre o IEP, com esse intervalo sendo 258 dias maior em vacas que apresentaram esse transtorno. A ocorrência de distocia (P<0,05) e natimorto (P<0,01) afetou significativamente o IPC, representando aumentos desse intervalo em 82,4 e 136,1 dias, respectivamente. O IPCC foi o índice menos sensível aos efeitos das desordens reprodutivas, não tendo sofrido efeito de nenhum dos transtornos. A PL foi associada à distocia (P<0,05). Os animais que apresentaram distocia produziram 380,5kg de leite a menos do que vacas que não a apresentaram. A partir da análise dos resultados, concluiu-se que procedimentos preventivos para controlar a saúde do rebanho, exames clínicos criteriosos de problemas pós-parto e o monitoramento de dados com informações precisas para a análise periódica dos índices produtivos e reprodutivos podem contribuir para uma produção leiteira mais racional e econômica.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of post partum disorders on productive and reproductive performance of Holstein cows, from a dairy experimental station, during 24 years. Productive and reproductive data were collected from 350 cows. Analyses of variance was conducted to evaluate the effects of occurrence of post partum disorders (abortion, stillbirth, dystocia, retained placenta) and mastitis on calving interval (IEP), calving to conception interval (IPC), calving to first estrus interval (IPPC), number of estrus before conception (NC) and milk production (PL). The mean age at first estrus was 29.4 months and the mean age at first calving was 37.1 months. Mean IEP was 14.6 months, mean IPPC was 97.04 days and median IPC was 150.71 days. Median interestrus interval was 24 days, suggesting problems in a estrus detection. A significant effect of occurrence of abortion (P<0.05) was observed on IEP. Calving intervals were 258 days longer in the cows that aborted than in the ones that did not abort. The occurrence of stillbirth (P<0.01) and dystocia (P<0.05) significantly increased IEP in 82.4 days and 136.1 days, respectively. The IPPC was not affected by any of the diseases considered. Milk production was affected by dystocia (P<0.05). Cows that had dystocia produced 380.5kg less milk than normal calving cows. We concluded that preventive procedures to control herd health, criterious clinical diagnosis of post partum disorders and development of data bases with precise recordings for regular analysis of the productive and reproductive parameters may lead to a more economic dairy production.

Em um haras, 129 éguas foram cobertas por 4 garanhões, apresentando uma percentagem de prenhez média de 76,7%. Os garanhões foram submetidos a exame de sêmen duas vezes durante a temporada de monta e a percentagem de espermatozóides morfologicamente normais foi utilizada para análises estatísticas em relação a percentagem de prenhez, ao final da estação reprodutiva. Uma análise de regressão revelou que a percentagem de prenhez (y) pode ser estimada pela percentagem de espermatozóides morfologicamente normais (x) no ejaculado, conforme a seguinte equação: y=52,38+0,44x; r2=97,8%; P<0,01. Conclui-se que a percentagem de prenhez pode ser estimada com base na percentagem de espermatozóides morfologicamente normais no ejaculado de garanhões, uma vez que se trata de uma importante característica da qualidade do sêmen e que está fortemente associada a fertilidade, sempre que as condições de manejo forem uniformes para garanhões e éguas.

In a breeding farm, 129 mares were bred to 4 stallions and had an overall pregnancy rate of 76.7%. Stailions were submitted to semen examination for at least two times at the beginning of the breeding season and the percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa were used for statistical analysis in relation to the percentage of pregnancy at the end of the breeding season. A regression analysis revealed that the percentage of pregnancy (y) can be estimated by the percentage of normal spermatozoa (x) in the ejaculate according to the following equation: y=52.38+0.44x; r2=97.8%; P<0.01. We concluded that the pregnancy rate can be estimated by the percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa in the ejaculate of stallions, since it is an importam characteristic of the semen quality that is strongly associated with fertility, in conditions of uniform management procedures for mares and stallions.

Descrevem-se os aspectos qualitativos do sêmen e a fertilidade de um garanhão da raça PSI (Puro Sangue Inglês), durante cinco períodos reprodutivos (1990 a 1994). Verificaram-se altos índices de acrossomo anormais (13,6 a 39%) nos ejaculados (N° = 15), na maioria do tipo "Knobbed AcrosomeDefect" (área hipercromática ou espessamento excêntrico apical dos espermatozóides afetados. A porcentagem de prenhez (P) variou entre 25 e 90% e a porcentagem de prenhez por ciclo (P/C) entre 20 e 59%. Através de análise de regressão, P/C relacionou-se significativamente (p<0,05) com os índices de acrossomos anormais (R²=0,87). As demais características seminais avaliadas, não se relacionaram aos índices de fertilidade. Conclui-se que o defeito de acrossomo, neste caso, podem ser atribuídas à espermiogênese imperfeita. Tal anormalidade afeta significativamente a fertilidade do garanhão.

It is described certain qualitative seminal characteristics and the fertility of a Thoroughbred stallion, during five consecutive breeding seasons (1990 a 1994). High percentages (13.6 a 39%) of abnormal acrossomes were observed in the ejaculates (N° = 15), being the majority of the "Knobbed Acrosome Defect" type (dark staining area or eccentric thickening at the apex of affected spermatozoa). The pregnancy rate (P) varied between 25 e 90% and the per cycle pregnancy (P/C) between 20 e 59%. Regression analysis showed that P/C was significantly (p<0.05) related to the percentage of abnormal acrossomes (R²=0.87). Other seminal characteristics considered in this report were not associated (P>0.05) to fertility indexes. The conclusion is that the acrossomal defect, in the present case, could be attributed to arrested spermiogenesis. Such abnormality significantly affected stallion fertility.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo discutir aspectos da fertilidade de garanhões e sua relação com o exame andrológico. Numa primeira análise, 10 garanhões usados em monta natural exclusivamente, tiveram seus índices reprodutivos relacionados a qualidade do seu sêmen. Num segundo grupo, foram considerados 14 garanhões cujos acasalamentos eram, alternadamente, inseminação artificial e/ou monta natural. No terceiro estudo, foram relacionados garanhões específicos, pertencentes aos dois grupos anteriores, sabidamente subférteis em que os índices de fertilidade foram relacionados a características do sêmen ou manejo. Quando os garanhões são submetidos a monta natural dentro de um programa de manejo racional existe uma significativa relação entre qualidade de sêmen e fertilidade (P <0,01). O mesmo não se verifica quando há interferência de manejo (homem), usando inseminação artificial e modificando condições naturais (inseminação artificial inadequadamente empregada reduzindo a fertilidade e. adequadamente empregada, melhorando a fertilidade de garanhões subférteis). A análise de exames andrológicos individuais evidencia falares intrínsecos e extrínsecos (manejo) afetando a fertilidade.

This paper discuss certain aspects of the fertility in stallions and its relationship to the Breeding Soundness Examination. In afirst analysis, 10 stallions that were bred only naturally had their reproductive standards correlated to the sêmen quality. In a second step, we consider 14 stallions that were bred either by artificial insemination and for naturally. In a third study, certain subfertile stallions, belonging to the previous two groups, had their fertility standards correlated to sêmen quality and management procedures. A significam association (P<0.01) was observed between sêmen quality (sperm morphology) and fertility, when stallions were bred naturally under appropriate management procedures. This relationship was not observed when artificial insemination was included in the management, because it can improve the fertility of subfertile stallions or be detrimental to normal stallions when misused used. The individual analysis of the subfertile stallions allowed to determine if the cause the infertility can befrom intrinsic or extrinsic (management) factors.

O presente trabalho descreve a frequência de ovulações múltiplas em 3631 éguas, abatidas em Pelotas - RS, durante o período de janeiro de 1988 a setembro de 1989, com a predominância de sangue da raça Crioula. A maior frequência de ovulações múltiplas ocorreu no mês de fevereiro (19%), diminuindo progressivamente até setembro (0,4%). Este resultado mostra que o fotoperíodo exerce uma influência positiva sobre a atividadc ovariana, inclusive no que tange ao número de ovulações por ciclo. A frequência média geral de ovulações múltiplas foi 7,1% (257/3631). A taxa média de ovulações duplas foi de 6,5% (235/3631), tripla de 0,5% (19/3631) e quádrupla, 0,1% (3/3631). Os meses de dezembro a abril mostraram as maiores frequências sobre o total das ovulações múltiplas (65,5%). Estas informações podem representar um importante subsídio ao manejo reprodutivo da raça crioula, visando controlar o sério problema que as gestações gemelares representam na espécie equina.

This paper describes the frequency of multiple ovulations in 3631 mares, slaughtered in Pelotas - RS, predominantly from Crioulo breed. The higher frequency of multiple ovulation ocurred in February (19%), decreasing progressively up to September (0.4%). This result shows that the photoperiod has a positive influence on the ovarian activity, even on the number of ovulations per cycle. The overall mean of multiple ovulation was 7.1% (257/3631). Double ovulations ocurred in 6.5% (235/3631), triple in 0.5% (19/3631) and quadruple in 0.1% (3/3631). The months from December to April presented the highest frequencies over all multiple ovulations (65.5%). These observations may represent an importante support to reproductive management of the Crioulo breed in order to control the serious problem that represents twin pregnancies in equine.
