ABSTRACT Zinnia sp. and hairy beggartick (Bidens pilosa) plants exhibiting symptoms of possible virus infection were found in the municipality of Santa Bárbara d’Oeste, São Paulo State, Brazil. Flexuous filamentous particles and cytoplasmatic inclusions typical of potyvirus infection were observed by transmission electron microscopy, respectively, in leaf extracts and cells of symptomatic leaves. Infection of both plants with bidens mottle virus (BiMoV) was confirmed by RT-PCR using potyvirus universal primers, followed by nucleotide sequencing of the amplicons. The nearly complete genome sequence of the Brazilian isolate, named BiMoV-BR, is 9700 nucleotides long and shares 95.6 % identity with the corresponding nucleotide sequence of a BiMoV isolate from the United States. BiMoV-BR was mechanically transmitted and caused systemic infection on plants of Zinnia sp., hairy beggarstick, sunflower (Helianthus annuus), and lettuce (Lactuca sativa). Myzus persicae transmitted the virus to Zinnia sp. plants with efficacy of 8 % and 42 %, using one and ten aphids per plant, respectively. This is the first detection of BiMoV in Brazil. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the distribution of this potyvirus in the country.

ABSTRACT Soybean and corn succession system widely adopt in different agricultural regions from Brazil. However, different species incorporation, especially in the autumn/winter season, can influence the soybeans profitability in succession system and farm economic return, providing benefits for the agricultural sector. The objective this work was to analyze the development of different species in the autumn-winter crop and the influence on soybean yield and the economic return of farm in Midwest of Paraná, Brazil. The study was conducted during 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 crop. A completely randomized design adopted, with eight treatments (autumn/winter season) and four replications. In autumn/winter season were composed of five crops in single system (black oat, brachiaria ruziziensis, oilseed radish, corn and wheat), two in intercropped systems (black oat with oilseed radish and corn with brachiaria) and fallow area (spontaneous plants). In the spring/summer season, soybean was cultivated. The biomass produced in the autumn/winter season varies with the species and cultivation system adopted. Soybean yield is higher when cultivated in succession to brachiaria, while the worst performance is obtained in succession to spontaneous plants. The cultivation of wheat in the winter and soybeans in the summer presents superior economic performance.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Scientometrics is the field concerned with measuring and analyzing academic literature, using specific metrics and data from bibliometric databases. Hematology is a broad area of science and medicine, from which several landmark scientific discoveries have emerged. Objective: The aim of this report is to provide a snapshot of the landscape of hematology research in Brazil, based on a comprehensive analysis of published studies in hematology whose authors were affiliated to Brazilian institutions from 1980 to 2020. Method: Articles, reviews and letters to the editor with at least one author affiliated to a Brazilian institution were retrieved from Incytes/Web of Science or Scopus databases. Importantly, only papers classified in the subject area “Hematology” by the embedded algorithms of each database were included. Results: Considering all published papers, Brazil is in the 22nd position, contributing with around 1.1% of papers in this period. A clear and sustained increase in publication output can be observed from the early 1990’s to the present moment. Publicly-funded higher education institutions were the main contributors to the development and consolidation of the hematology scientific community, which has grown in diversity, with an increasing number of contributions from private institutions. In regard to funding, public agencies have been and remain by large as the most important funder of research in hematology in Brazil. Conclusion: We suggest that continuous monitoring of the temporal trends of some of the data compiled in our report could potentially contribute to a clearer picture of the development of hematology research in Brazil.

ABSTRACT Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) plants showing symptoms of chlorosis, mosaic, chlorotic ringspot, and necrosis on younger leaves were found in a small experimental plot in Piracicaba, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Preliminary examinations by transmission electron microscopy of symptomatic leaf tissue revealed flexuous filamentous particles 13-15 nm wide and 700-750 nm long, and cytoplasmatic cylindrical inclusions typical of those found in plant cells infected by members of the Potyvirus genus. Total RNA extracted from symptomatic leaves and subjected to RT-PCR followed by partial nucleotide sequencing confirmed the presence of a potyvirus in the affected plants, which was identified as sunflower chlorotic mottle virus (SuCMoV), a member of the Sunflower chlorotic mottle virus (genus Potyvirus, family Potyviridae) species. Mechanical transmission assays with extracts of symptomatic sunflower leaves reproduced the original symptoms in sunflowers, mosaic symptoms in Zinnia elegans, and chlorotic local lesions in Chenopodium amaranticolor and C. quinoa. Sunflower and zinnia plants became infected after aphid transmission experiments with Myzus persicae. RT-PCR tests using specific primers for SuCMoV confirmed the presence of this virus in experimentally infected plants, meeting the criteria of Koch’s postulate. This is the first report of SuCMoV infecting sunflower plants in Brazil.

ABSTRACT The application of silicon (Si) in plants benefits the performance of several species. However, the dynamics of the element, mainly in non-accumulating species such as tomatoes, are rarely analyzed. This study investigated the dynamics of Si in tomato plants cultivated under different forms of application and water conditions. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with four replications, using a factorial scheme 2 x 4: two water conditions (60 and 100% of the evapotranspiration of the crop - ETc), and four forms of silicon application (without application, full dose applied at soil, split dose applied at soil, and foliar application). Si content in the soil and in the different plant organs were analyzed. Si content in the soil increased after the crop cycle depending on the application form (full or split doses). The dynamics of Si accumulation and extraction by tomato are influenced by the application form (higher in soil application) and water management, with fruits and leaves having the higher values. Si application, mainly in the soil, increased the rate of Si accumulation and extraction by tomatoes cultivated in different water conditions.

RESUMO A aplicação de silício em plantas ocasiona benefícios no desempenho de diversas espécies. Entretanto, a dinâmica do elemento, principalmente em plantas de espécies não acumuladoras como o tomate, é pouco analisada. O estudo teve como objetivo analisar a dinâmica do silício no cultivo do tomate em diferentes condições hídricas e formas de aplicação do elemento. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições, adotando esquema fatorial 2 x 4: duas condições de reposição hídrica (60 e 100% da evapotranspiração da cultura - ETc), quatro formas de aplicação de silício (sem aplicação, aplicação no solo de dose total, aplicação no solo de dose parcelada e aplicação foliar). Foi analisado o teor de silício no solo e nos componentes vegetais do tomateiro. O teor de silício no solo após o cultivo foi elevado em função da aplicação do elemento, em dose total ou parcelada. A dinâmica de acúmulo e extração do silício pelo tomateiro é influenciada pelo manejo hídrico e pela forma de aplicação do elemento, sendo as maiores taxas no fruto e na folha. A aplicação do elemento, principalmente no solo, elevou a taxa de acúmulo e extração do silício pelo tomateiro cultivado em diferentes condições de reposição hídrica.

Resumen Introducción: el trastorno mineral y óseo (TMO) es una complicación grave de la enfermedad renal crónica (ERC) que aumenta el riesgo de muerte por causas cardiovasculares y deteriora la calidad de vida de los pacientes afectados. Objetivo: evaluar la prevalencia de la DMO en pacientes con RDC y la asociación entre la tasa de filtración glomerular estimada (TFGe) y los indicadores de DMO (calcio, fósforo y PTH) en pacientes no dialíticos. Materiales y métodos: estudio seccional de una cohorte de dos años de pacientes renales crónicos adultos y ancianos en tratamiento conservador. La DMO se identificó por los valores séricos de: PTH (> 150 pg/mL) y/o hipocalcemia (Ca < 8,8mg/ dl) y/o hiperfosfatemia (P > 4,6 mg/dl). El análisis estadístico utilizado: regresión de Poisson; T de Student, Mann Whitney y correlaciones de Pearson y Spearman con un nivel de significación del 5%. Resultados: la prevalencia de DMO fue del 54,6% (n=41) (IC 95%: 43,45 - 65,43), más frecuente en mujeres, alfabetizadas, de edad avanzada, no bebedoras, no fumadoras, sedentarias y de color de piel blanca. Las correlaciones entre el P y la PTH con el GFRe fueron significativas, inversas, de fuerza moderada (p= <0,005 y p = 0,003; coeficientes de correlación = - 0,312 y - 0,379 respectivamente). Discusión: los resultados de este estudio evidencian lagunas en el seguimiento de la DMO-DRC por parte de la atención primaria, lo que requiere una revisión de las prácticas clínicas. Conclusión: se identificó una fuerte prevalencia de la DMO en las primeras fases de la ERC, además de correlaciones entre el aumento de los niveles de fósforo y PTH y el empeoramiento de la función renal.

Abstract Introduction: mineral and bone disorder (BMD) is a serious complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) that increases risks for death from cardiovascular causes and impairs quality of life of affected patients. Objective: to evaluate the prevalence of BMD in patients with CKD and the association between estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) and BMD indicators (calcium, phosphorus and PTH) in non-dialysis patients. Materials and Methods: sectional study of a two-year cohort of chronic renal adults and elderly patients on conservative treatment. BMD was identified by serum values of: PTH (> 150 pg/mL) and/or hypocalcemia (Ca < 8.8mg/dl) and/or hyperphosphatemia (P > 4.6 mg/dl). The statistical analysis used: Poisson regression; Student's T, Mann Whitney and Pearson and Spearman correlations with 5% significance level. Results: BMD prevalence was 54.6% (n=41) (95% CI: 43.45 - 65.43), more frequent in women, literate, elderly, non-drinkers, non-smokers, sedentary and white skin color. Correlations between P and PTH with GFRe were significant, inverse, moderate strength (p= <0.005 and p = 0.003; correlation coefficients = - 0.312 and - 0.379 respectively). the findings of this study highlighted gaps in the monitoring of BMD-DRC by primary care, requiring a review of clinical practices. Conclusion: robust prevalence of BMD in the early stages of CKD was identified, in addition to correlations between increased phosphorus and PTH levels and worsening kidney function.

Resumo Introdujo: o objetivo foi avaliar a prevalencia do distúrbio mineral e ósseo em pacientes com doenca renal crónica e a associate entre Taxa de Filtrado Glomerular estimada (TFGe) e os indicadores do distúrbio mineral e ósseo (DMO) (cálcio, fósforo e PTH) em pacientes renais crónicos nao dialíticos. Materiais e Métodos: estudo seccional da linha de base de uma coorte de dois anos, com adultos e idosos renais crónicos em tratamento conservador. Para identificado do DMO utilizamos os seguintes valores séricos: PTH (> 150 pg/mL) e/ou hipocalcemia (Ca < 8,8mg/dl) e/ou hiperfosfatemia (P > 4,6 mg/dl). Na análise estatística utilizou-se: regressao de Poisson; T de Student, Mann Whitney e correlacóes de Pearson e Spearman. Nivel de significancia foi de 5%. Resultados: prevalencia de DMO de 54,6% (n=41) (IC 95%: 43,45 - 65,43). A maior prevalencia de DMO foi em pessoas do sexo feminino, alfabetizadas, idosas, nao etilistas, nao tabagistas, sedentárias e de cor de pele branca, porém, sem diferenca estatística entre os grupos com e sem DMO. As correlacóes entre P e PTH com TFGe foram significativas, inversas, de forca moderada (p= <0,005 e p = 0,003; coeficientes de correlato = - 0,312 e - 0,379 respectivamente). Discussao: os achados desse estudo mostraram que existe uma lacuna no acompanhamento do DMO-DRC pela atencao primária e a prática clínica deve ser revista. Conclusao: identificou-se prevalencia robusta de DMO nos estágios precoces da DRC, além de correlacóes significativas entre o aumento dos níveis de fósforo e PTH e piora das funcóes renais.

Abstract Background Perioperative stroke, delirium, and cognitive impairment could be related to management and to variations in blood pressure control, cerebral hypoperfusion and raised blood volume. Cerebral autoregulation (CAR) is a mechanism to maintain cerebral perfusion through the control of the vascular tone and hemodynamic reactions in the circulation. Objective The present systematic review addresses the relationship between impaired CAR and perioperative stroke by evaluating the rate of neurological complications after surgery in studies in which perioperative CAR was tested or monitored. Methods We included randomized clinical trials and prospective observational studies. All studies had adjusted the relative risk, hazard ratio or 95% confidence interval (95%CI) values. These estimation effects were tested using random-effects models. Heterogeneity among the selected studies was assessed using the Higgins and Thompson I2 statistics. Results The Web of Science, PubMed and EMBASE electronic databases were searched to retrieve articles. A total of 4,476 studies published between 1983 and 2019 were analyzed, but only 5 qualified for the data extraction and were included in the final analysis. The combined study cohort comprised 941 patients who underwent CAR monitoring during surgical procedures. All studies provided information about perioperative stroke, which equated to 16% (158 of 941) of the overall patient population. Conclusion The present meta-analysis showed evidence of the impact of CAR impairment in the risk of perioperative stroke. On the pooled analysis, blood fluctuations or other brain insults large enough to compromise CAR were associated with the outcome of stroke (odds ratio [OR]: 2.26; 95%CI: 1.54–2.98;p < 0.0001).

Resumo Antecedentes Acidente vascular cerebral (AVC) perioperatório, delírio e comprometimento cognitivo podem estar relacionados ao manejo e à variações no controle da pressão arterial, à hipoperfusão cerebral, e ao aumento do volume sanguíneo. A autorregulação cerebral (ARC) é um mecanismo para manter a perfusão cerebral por meio do controle do tônus vascular e das reações hemodinâmicas na circulação. Objetivo Este trabalho aborda sistematicamente a determinação da relação entre a falha da ARC e o AVC perioperatório, com uma avaliação da taxa de complicações neurológicas pós-cirúrgicas em estudos em que a ARC perioperatória foi monitorada. Métodos Esta revisão sistemática incluiu ensaios clínicos randomizados e estudos observacionais prospectivos. Todos os estudos ajustaram o risco relativo, a razão de risco ou os valores de intervalo de confiança de 95% (IC95%). Esses efeitos de estimativas foram testados usando modelos de efeitos aleatórios. A heterogeneidade entre os diferentes estudos foi avaliada por meio das estatísticas de Higgins e Thompson I2. Resultados As bases de dados eletrônicas Web of Science, PubMed e Embase foram pesquisadas para selecionar os artigos. Um total de 4.476 estudos publicados entre 1983 e 2019 foram analisados, mas apenas 5 se qualificavam para a extração de dados e foram incluídos na análise final. A coorte combinada do estudo foi composta por 941 pacientes. Todos os estudos forneceram informações sobre AVC perioperatório, o que equivaleu a 16% (158 de 941) da população geral de pacientes. Conclusão Esta meta-análise mostrou evidências do impacto do prejuízo da ARC no risco de AVC perioperatório. Na análise conjunta, as flutuações sanguíneas ou outros insultos cerebrais grandes o suficiente para comprometer a ARC foram associados ao resultado do AVC (razão de probabilidades [RP]: 2,26; IC95%: 1,54–2,98;p < 0,0001).

Resumo Lesões Cervicais Não Cariosas (LCNC) são defeitos do tecido dentário, não relacionados à cárie, frequentemente observados na prática odontológica. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da profundidade e espessura da dentina de LCNC na resposta à dor dentária por meio de testes de diagnóstico clínico. 86 dentes de 14 pacientes com LCNC foram avaliados por: profundidade da LCNC, testes clínicos (estímulo evaporativo, para detectar níveis de dor de hipersensibilidade dentinária, teste térmico frio para classificar a saúde pulpar, estímulos percussivos para avaliação do tecido perirradicular e tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC), para avaliação da espessura de dentina remanescente (EDR). Em termos de profundidade, a amostra foi dividida em dois grupos: G1- dentes com LCNCs ≤1,0mm e G2- dentes com LCNCs entre 1,1-2,0 mm. Os dados de dor dentária foram comparados pelo teste de Mann-Whitney e a EDR pelo teste t-Student e correlações pelo teste de Pearson (p <0,05). A profundidade da LCNC não influencia a resposta da dor dentária ao estímulo evaporativo (p = 0,129, teste térmico frio (p = 0,125), teste diagnóstico clínico de percussão vertical (p = 0,317) e horizontal (p = 0,119), porém o G1 apresentou maior EDR (p <0,001) e o teste de correlação mostrou que LCNC mais profunda apresenta menor EDR (p = 0,011 / r = -0,273). Conclusão: Dentes com LCNC de até 2mm de profundidade apresenta níveis semelhantes de dor para hipersensibilidade dentinária, pulpar e saúde perirradicular, independente da profundidade da LCNC. Entretanto, lesões com profundidade ≤1,0mmin apresentaram mais EDR nos achados tomográficos.

Abstract Non-carious Cervical Lesions (NCCL) are dental tissue defects, non-related to caries, frequently observed in the dental practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of NCCL on dentin depth and thickness and the response to dental pain by means of clinical diagnostic tests. 86 teeth from 14 patients with NCCL were assessed by: depth of NCCL, clinical tests (evaporative stimulus, to detect pain levels of dentin hypersensitivity, cold thermal test to classify pulp health, percussive stimuli to evaluate the periradicular tissues and cone beam computed tomography (tomography to evaluate remaining dentin thickness (RDT). In terms of depth, the sample was divided into two groups: G1- teeth with NCCLs ≤1.0mm and G2- teeth with NCCLs between 1.1-2.0 mm. Dental pain data were compared by Mann-Whitney test and RDT by Student’s t-test and correlations by the Pearson test (p<0.05). The depth of NCCL does not influence dental pain response to evaporative stimulus (p=0.129), cold thermal test (p = 0.125), vertical (p = 0.317) and horizontal (p = 0.119) percussion clinical diagnostic tests. However, G1 showed more RDT (p<0.001), and the correlation test showed that deeper NCCL presents smaller remaining dentin thickness (p=0.011/r=-0.273). In conclusion, tooth with NCCL up to 2mm-depth presents similar levels of pain for dentin hypersensitivity, pulp and periradicular tissue independent to NCCL depth, however, lesions with ≤1.0mm-depth showed greater RDT in tomographic findings.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to determine and model the drying kinetics of organic corn seeds at different temperatures, as well as to evaluate their physiological quality after drying. The drying of organic corn seeds was carried out by keeping controlled temperatures of 30, 40, 50 and 60 °C during periods of 84.3; 20.0; 14.3 and 8.6 hours, respectively. With the experimental data, several mathematical models were adjusted to describe the drying kinetics, and the best model was chosen by statistical criteria. After drying, the seeds were subjected to analyzes of electrical conductivity, germination, emergence e and germination speed index (IVG). The Modified Midilli model was the one that best represented the drying kinetics of organic corn seeds. It was verified that the increase in the temperature of the drying air promotes greater damage to the seeds, due to the increase in the electrical conductivity of the solution. Germination, emergence and IVE had their values reduced by temperature increase. It is concluded that the physiological quality of organic corn seeds is affected by the drying air temperature and that higher temperatures promote greater damage to the seeds. A temperature of 30 °C is recommended for drying the seeds.

RESUMO Objetivou-se, com o presente trabalho, determinar e modelar a cinética de secagem de sementes de milho em diferentes temperaturas bem como avaliar a qualidade fisiológica das mesmas após a secagem. A secagem das sementes de milho foi realizada mantendo-se as temperaturas controladas de 30, 40, 50 e 60 °C durante os períodos de 84,3; 20,0; 14,3 e 8,6 horas, respectivamente. Com os dados experimentais, ajustaram-se diversos modelos matemáticos para descrever a cinética de secagem e, o melhor modelo, foi escolhido por critérios estatísticos. Após a secagem, as sementes foram submetidas às análises de condutividade elétrica, germinação, emergência e índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG). O modelo Midilli Modificado foi o que melhor representou a cinética de secagem das sementes de milho. Constata-se que o incremento de temperatura do ar de secagem afeta a viabilidade das sementes, pelo aumento da condutividade elétrica da solução. A germinação, emergência e o IVE tiveram seus valores reduzidos pelo aumento de temperatura. Conclui-se que a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de milho é afetada pela temperatura do ar de secagem e que as temperaturas mais elevadas promovem maiores danos às sementes. Recomenda-se a temperatura de 30°C para realização da secagem das sementes.

RESUMO O milho doce (Zea mays subsp. saccharata) destina-se principalmente ao processamento industrial. Otimizar tempo e custos durante o melhoramento de plantas é fundamental. Uma alternativa é o uso de fenotipagem de alto rendimento (HTP) indiretamente associada a caracteres agronômicos e teores de clorofila. Este trabalho teve como objetivo (i) verificar se a HTP por imagens digitais é útil para a seleção de genótipos de milho doce e (ii) investigar as correlações entre as características avaliadas por métodos convencionais e obtidas por imagens. Dez características foram avaliadas em sete populações S3 de milho doce e em dois híbridos comerciais, três características por fenotipagem clássica e as demais por HTP baseado em análises de imagens RGB (red, green, blue) e imagem multiespectral. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e teste de Scott-Knott. Em adição, foi obtido um gráfico de correlação fenotípica. Os híbridos foram mais produtivos que as populações S3, demonstrando uma avaliação eficiente. As características extraídas por HTP e pela fenotipagem clássica apresentaram alto grau de associação. A HTP foi eficiente na identificação de genótipos de milho doce com maior e menor produtividade. Os índices VCA (vegetative canopy area), NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) e VARI (visible atmospherically resistant index) estiveram fortemente associados à produtividade de grãos.

ABSTRACT Sweet corn (Zea mays subsp. saccharata) is mainly intended for industrial processing. Optimizing time and costs during plant breeding is fundamental. An alternative is the use of high-throughput phenotyping (HTP) indirect associated with agronomic traits and chlorophyll contents. This study aimed to (i) verify whether HTP by digital images is useful for screening sweet corn genotypes and (ii) investigate the correlations between the traits evaluated by conventional methods and those obtained from images. Ten traits were evaluated in seven S3 populations of sweet corn and in two commercial hybrids, three traits by classical phenotyping and the others by HTP based on RGB (red, green, blue) and multispectral imaging analysis. The data were submitted to the analyses of variance and Scott-Knott test. In addition, a phenotypic correlation graph was plotted. The hybrids were more productive than the S3 populations, showing an efficient evaluation. The traits extracted using HTP and classical phenotyping showed a high degree of association. HTP was efficient in identifying sweet corn genotypes with higher and lower yield. The vegetative canopy area (VCA), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and visible atmospherically resistant index (VARI) indices were strongly associated with grain yield.

RESUMO Objetivo: revisar a literatura disponível sobre a relação entre alterações auditivas e deficiência da biotinidase. Métodos: a busca foi realizada entre outubro de 2018 e agosto de 2021, nas bases de dados: ELSEVIER, MEDLINE, SciELO, LILACS. Utilizaram-se descritores em português, inglês e espanhol, além das ferramentas PRISMA para seleção dos artigos e STROBE para análise dos mesmos. Revisão da Literatura: foram selecionados artigos publicados entre 1983 e 2020 que respondiam à pergunta norteadora da pesquisa. Foram incluídos estudos observacionais, estudos de série de casos e relatos de caso, e excluídos os artigos sem descrição dos métodos utilizados, realizados pelo mesmo autor e com a mesma amostra. A estratégia de busca inicial identificou 152 artigos. Após aplicados os critérios de inclusão e exclusão, 14 artigos foram incluídos na presente revisão. Conclusão: a presença de biotina foi frequentemente associada à gênese das vias auditivas. Foi observada uma relação sugerida pela literatura entre deficiência da biotinidase e alterações auditivas.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to review the available literature on the relationship between hearing disorders and Biotinidase deficiency. Methods: a literature search carried out between October 2018 and August 2021, on the following databases: ELSEVIER, MEDLINE, SciELO, LILACS. Descriptors were used in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. PRISMA tools were used to select the articles and STROBE was used to analyze them. Literature Review: the selected articles were published between 1983 and 2020 and answered the guiding question of the research. Observational studies, case series studies, and case reports were included. Articles without a methodology description, or carried out by the same author and with the same sample were excluded. The initial search strategy identified 152 articles. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 14 articles were selected for this review. Conclusion: the presence of Biotin was often associated with auditory pathways origins. The literature suggested a relationship between Biotinidase deficiency and hearing disorders.

The relationship between patients and dentists today is more worn and less based on trust, which can lead to high rates of lawsuits related to civil liability and dental malpractice. Aim verify if there has been an increase in the number of lawsuits related to questioned dental treatments, and against dentists registered in the city of São Paulo (SP), Brazil, from 2012 to 2017. Methods We outlined an overview based on the list from the São Paulo Council of Dentistry containing 30,238 registered dentists in the city of São Paulo, and searched for lawsuits on the public base of the São Paulo State Court’s. Results The search, after the inclusion and exclusion criteria, found 247 lawsuits, with dental implants as the most involved specialty. The total indemnities requested ranged from R$ 227.42 to R$ 937,000.00, but no indemnity granted exceeded the amount of R$ 100,000.00. Conclusion According to the analysis of cases, there is a progressive increase in the number of civil liability lawsuits against dentists involving dental malpractice litigance.

Abstract The seasonal forest formations of the Atlantic Forest are a threatened and poorly known habitat. We present here a list of the non-volant mammals occurring in a 515-ha forest fragment known as Santa Maria and located in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. Our surveys are based on live trap captures, camera traps, and active searches for footprints, as well as secondary data. We list 29 species of non-volant mammals in the fragment, recorded between 1996 and 2021. One species found in the fragment, Leontopithecus chrysopygus, is globally endangered. Two species are classified as “vulnerable” in the global red list: Myrmecophaga tridactyla, and Tapirus terresris. One species, Panthera onca, is classified as “critically endangered” in São Paulo state. The red howler, Alouatta guariba, was not recorded after 1999 and has probably been extirpated in the fragment. We show that the number of non-volant mammal species in Santa Maria fragment is high, in relation to its size. The fragment is also in a strategic position, between the Morro do Diabo state park and the Black Lion Tamarin Ecological station, the two largest protected areas in the region. Considering its high mammal richness and its possible role as stepping stone for the local fauna, we recommend that the fragment become a protected area.

ABSTRACT The effect of silicon (Si) on fitness and leaf consumption of the fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith), has been observed in the laboratory, but the effects of Si on damage or defoliation reduction have not yet been determined under field conditions. Here, we evaluated the effects of amendment of soil with Si on defoliation by FAW and crop yield in maize. Two field experiments were carried out, with four doses of Si and a control (no Si amendment). Experiment #1 evaluated 150, 300, 450, and 600 kg of total Si·ha-1, with natural or manual infestation with FAW eggs, while Experiment #2 tested 600, 800, 1,000 and 1,200 kg of total Si·ha-1, with natural or manual infestation with FAW larvae. Defoliation reduction was observed with Si increasing in both Experiments #1 and #2. However, reduction was not observed in all evaluations, and it was dependent of infestation (natural and manual) and the time since manual infestation. Reduction in defoliation began at 600 kg Si·ha-1. In contrast, plant Si content increased linearly with increasing soil Si application. No effect of Si application was observed on maize kernel yield. The increase in leaf Si content reduced FAW defoliation, but it did not affect maize yield from 600 to 1,200 kg·ha-1 of Si. Amendment of soil with Si can be used as a strategy to optimize integrated pest management of FAW in maize.
