ABSTRACT Corn intercropped with Urochloa brizantha (Syn, Brachiaria brizantha) has been indicated as a suitable alternative management practice for rational land use in crop-livestock production systems in the Cerrado region of Brazil. An experiment was carried out in Maracaju, MS, Brazil to evaluate the effect of sequences of soybean/second-crop corn systems intercropped with Urochloa brizantha and the effects of forms of nitrogen on soil chemical and physical properties. A randomized block experimental design was used with four replications; treatments were in a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement with two systems of crop management: second-crop corn intercropped with Urochloa brizantha, and monoculture of second crop corn; and four forms of topdressing N: urea, urea + ammonium sulfate, ammonium sulfate, and no N supply. The following chemical properties were evaluated: soil organic matter and exchangeable K contents, cation exchange capacity, base saturation, and K saturation; as well as the physical properties: soil bulk density and aggregate stability. Crop residue cover and agronomic traits of soybean were also assessed. Intercropping induced significant differences in crop residue cover, plant height, soybean yield, stand, 100-seed weight, soil organic matter, exchangeable K, and K saturation in the exchange complex. There was no significant effect of the crop sequences on soil bulk density and mean weight and geometric mean diameter of water-stable aggregates. No significant effect of forms of N was observed on any chemical or physical properties, or on those related to soybean development.

A caracterização morfológica e a estabilidade dos agregados constituem fatores importantes na avaliação dos sistemas de manejo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a morfologia e a estabilidade de agregados de um Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico, manejado com plantio direto e plantio convencional, com e sem ação residual de gesso. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, arranjado em esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas, em que os tratamentos foram dois sistemas de manejo do solo, (parcelas) e com 0 e 2000 kg ha-1 de gesso (subparcelas) e cinco profundidades (0-0,05, 0,05-0,10, 0,10-0,15, 0,15-0,20 e 0,20-0,30 m) sendo as subsubparcelas, com quatro repetições. A morfologia dos agregados foi determinada por meio de imagens e, posteriormente, avaliada pelo software Quantporo; a estabilidade foi determinada pelo método da via úmida. Os resultados demonstram que o cultivo em sistema plantio direto, com ou sem efeito residual de gesso, proporcionou maiores diâmetros geométricos de agregados. A combinação entre plantio direto e efeito residual de gesso proporcionou agregados mais rugosos.

Morphological characterization and aggregate stability is an important factor in evaluating management systems. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the stability and morphology of the aggregates of a dystrophic Oxisol managed with no-tillage and conventional tillage with and without the residual action of gypsum. The experimental design was randomized blocks arranged in split-split plot, where the treatments were two soil management systems (plots) with 0 and 2000 kg ha-1 of gypsum (subplots) and five depths (0-0.05, 0.05-0.10, 0.10-0.15, 0.15-0.20 and 0.20-0.30 m) as the subsubplots, with four replications. The aggregate morphology was determined through images and later evaluated by the Quantporo software. Stability was determined by the wet method. The results showed that the no-tillage system, with or without gypsum residual effect, provided the aggregates with the largest geometric diameters. The combination of no-tillage system and the gypsum residual effect provided rougher aggregates.

Há tempos busca-se um índice para qualificar a estrutura do solo e, nesse sentido, o estudo de imagens digitais de agregados do solo pode ser um caminho promissor. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo caracterizar, micromorfometricamente, os agregados de um Cambissolo Háplico Tb distrófico típico sob a influência de diferentes sistemas de manejo na cultura do arroz. Os sistemas de cultivo foram: convencional com semeadura na água, semeadura realizada em sequeiro e rotacionado com milho e arroz em um ciclo trienal. Os agregados foram coletados nas profundidades de 0-0,20 m, sendo utilizados aqueles retidos no intervalo de diâmetro de 9,52-4,76 mm e 4,76-2,00 mm, com um jogo de peneiras padrão. As análises dos agregados foram realizadas por meio de imagens digitais obtidas via scanner (300 dpi) sobre um total de 100 agregados dispostos em um tabuleiro de furos desencontrados. As imagens foram, posteriormente, analisadas com o programa Quantporo e as características dos agregados avaliadas foram: área, perímetro, rugosidade e aspecto. Os dados obtidos das análises micromorfométricas dos agregados do solo foram submetidos a análise de distribuição de frequências, teste de Qui-quadrado e testes de correlação não paramétrica de Spearman. Com base nas principais características micromorfométricas dos agregados menores (2,00-4,76 mm), concluiu-se que, no tratamento convencional, os agregados foram preponderantemente menores, mais arredondados e mais lisos.

For a long time, people have tried fo find an index to qualify the soil structure and, for this purpose, the study of soil aggregates digital images can be a promising procedure. The aim of this study was to characterize micromorphometrically aggregates of a typical Dystrudept soil under the influence of different rice crops management systems. The cultivation systems used were: conventional system with sowing in flooded area, sowing in upland area, and crop rotation with maize and rice, in a triennial cycle. Aggregates were collected at 0-0.20 m depths, being used those retained at diameters of 9.52-4.76 mm and 4.76-2.00 mm, with a standard set of sieves. The aggregates analyses were carried out with the aid of digital images from a scanner (300 dpi) over a total of 100 aggregates disposed over a tray with uneven holes. The images were subsequently analyzed by using the Quantporo program and the aggregates features evaluated were: area, perimeter, roughness, and aspect. Data obtained from soil aggregates micromorphometric analyses were submitted to the frequencies distribution analyses, Chi-square test, and Spearman's nonparametric correlation test. According to the main micromorphometric features of smaller size aggregates (2.00-4.76 mm), it was possible to conclude that, under the conventional system, aggregates were predominantly smaller, roundish, and smoother.

A competitividade econômica da soja brasileira no mercado mundial se deve, em grande parte, aos benefícios da fixação biológica do nitrogênio na cultura. O trabalho foi conduzido a campo, sob sistema plantio direto, em condição de sequeiro, no Município de Maracaju-MS, com o objetivo de avaliar a nodulação, o crescimento, nutrição mineral e produtividade de grãos da soja submetida a diferentes doses de gesso agrícola e molibdênio. Foi utilizado o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com cinco repetições e esquema de parcelas subdivididas, sendo as parcelas representadas por quatro doses de gesso agrícola (0, 1.000, 2.000 e 3.000 kg ha-1) e as subparcelas, por quatro doses de molibdênio (0, 20, 40 e 60 g ha-1). Não houve efeito da interação gesso x Mo sobre a produtividade da soja. O gesso agrícola não influencia no teor foliar de N e na produtividade. O Mo proporciona incrementos na produtividade e no teor de proteínas dos grãos.

The economic competitiveness of Brazilian soybeans on the world market occurs, in large part, due to the benefits of biological nitrogen fixation in this crop. The field experiment was carried out in Maracaju, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, under no-tillage system, in rainfed condition. The aim was to evaluate nodulation, growth, mineral nutrition and grain yield of soybeans under different doses of gypsum and molybdenum. The experimental design used was a randomized block with five replicates and arranged in a split-plot squeme, with the plot represented by four doses of gypsum (0, 1.000, 2.000 and 3.000 kg ha-1) and the subplots by four doses of molybdenum (0, 20, 40 and 60 g ha-1). There were no interaction effects of Mo x gypsum for grain yield. Gypsum has no influence in the N leaf content and grain yield. Mo increases grain yield and protein levels in the grain.

Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, avaliar a emergência de plântulas e o crescimento no viveiro de mudas de ipê-branco (Tabebuia roseo-alba (Ridl.) Sandwith) em diferentes substratos. Foram realizados dois experimentos independentes. O estudo da emergência foi realizado em seis substratos: 1- Plantmax® - P; 2- vermiculita - V; 3- areia - A; 4- solo + areia - SA (1:1); 5- solo + casca de arroz carbonizada - SC (1:1); 6- solo + areia + casca de arroz carbonizada - SAC (2:1:1) (v/v), sendo utilizado o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados (DBC) com três repetições. O estudo do crescimento no viveiro foi realizado em DBC com cinco substratos e cinco repetições, sendo utilizados os seguintes substratos: 1- solo + areia - SA (1:1); 2- solo + cama de frango semidecomposta - SCF (1:1); 3- solo + casca de arroz carbonizada - SC (1:1); 4- solo + areia + cama de frango semidecomposta - SACF (1:1:1); 5- solo + areia + casca de arroz carbonizada - SAC (1:1:1) (v/v). Os maiores valores de porcentagem final de emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência e altura das plântulas foram observados nos substratos P, V, SC e SAC. Os maiores valores de altura, diâmetro do colo, índice de clorofila, área foliar, comprimento da maior raiz e massa seca da parte aérea e radicular das mudas foram observados nos substratos SACF e SCF. Recomenda-se a utilização de P, V, SC ou SAC para germinação e emergência de plântulas e SACF ou SCF para a produção de mudas de ipê-branco.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the white tabebuia (Tabebuia roseo-alba (Ridl.) Sandwith) seedlings emergence and growth in the beds according to different substrates. Two independent experiments were conducted. The emergence study was carried out in six substrates: 1- Plantmax®; 2- vermiculite; 3- sand; 4- soil + sand (1:1); 5- soil + carbonized rice husk (1:1); 6- soil + sand + carbonized rice husk (2:1:1) (v/v), and the experiment was set up according to a three-replicate randomized complete block design. The growth study of seedlings was carried out according to a five-replicate randomized complete-block design with five substrates: 1- soil + sand (1:1); 2- soil + semi decomposed chicken manure (1:1); 3- soil + carbonized rice husk (1:1); 4- soil + sand + semi decomposed chicken manure (1:1:1); 5- soil + sand + carbonized rice husk (1:1:1) (v/v). The height results of seedling emergence, emergence speed index and the stem height were observed with Plantmax®, vermiculite, soil + carbonized rice husk and soil + sand + carbonized rice husk. The best results of seedling height, stem diameter, chlorophyll index, leaf area, root length and the stem dry mass weight and root were observed in the substrates with semi decomposed chicken manure. It is recommended the use of P, V, SC or SAC for seedling germination and emergence and SACF or SCF for seedling growth of white tabebuia.

Os sistemas de manejo agindo com condicionadores do solo podem alterar a qualidade física do solo e restringir ou maximizar a produção agrícola. Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar os atributos físicos e o desempenho agronômico da cultura da soja em um Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico submetido a dois sistemas de manejos em Dourados-MS. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, em esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas, sendo dois sistemas manejo do solo nas (parcelas) com 0 e 2000 kg ha-1 de gesso agrícola (subparcelas) e cinco profundidades (0-0,05, 0,05-0,10, 0,10-0,15, 0,15-0,20 e 0,20-0,30 m, sendo as subsubparcelas) com quatro repetições. Foram avaliados atributos físicos do solo e desempenho agronômico da cultura da soja. Os resultados mostram que a densidade do solo foi maior no plantio direto. A macroporosidade foi maior na profundidade de 0-0,05 m no plantio convencional e a microporosidade aumentou com a profundidade nos sistemas de manejo. A resistência à penetração aumentou em maiores profundidades. O plantio direto reduziu o número de vagens e o efeito residual de gesso aumentou a altura final das plantas.

Management systems acting with soil conditioners can change the physical quality of the soil and restrict or maximize agricultural production. In this study, we assessed the effect of the tillage system with and without the gypsum residual effect at different depths in a dystrophic red Oxisol in Dourados, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks with arrangements of subdivided plots; the treatments were two soil manure systems, in plots and with 0 and 2000 kg ha-1 gypsum (subplots) and five depths (0-0.05, 0.05-0.10, 0.10-0.15, 0.15-0.20, and 0.20-0.30 m, the latter ones being the subplots) with four replicates. Physical attributes of the soil and agronomic performance of soybean crop were evaluated. The results show that the soil density was higher in tillage system and the gypsum residual effect influenced the soil density at 0.10-0.15 m deep. The macro porosity was higher at 0-0.05 m deep in conventional sowing and the micro porosity increased with the depth in the manure systems. The penetration resistance increased in higher depths. The tillage system with reduced pod number and gypsum residual effect increased the plant height.

O objetivo deste trabalho é caracterizar micromorfometricamente os agregados de um Latossolo submetido a diferentes formas de manejo do solo. O trabalho desenvolveu-se em um LATOSSOLO VERMELHO Distroférrico, de Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições e os tratamentos foram arranjados em parcelas sub-subdivididas. Os tratamentos consistiram de dois sistemas de manejo (convencional e plantio direto), duas doses de gesso (zero e 2 t ha-1) e a utilização de duas culturas de verão (soja e milho). Os agregados foram coletados, nas profundidades de 0 a 10 e 10 a 20 cm, utilizando-se, nos procedimentos experimentais, os retidos no intervalo de diâmetro de 9,52 e 4,76 mm, após peneiramento em um jogo de peneiras-padrão. As análises dos agregados foram realizadas por meio de imagens digitais obtidas via scanner (300 dpi) em 60 agregados dispostos em um tabuleiro de furos desencontrados. As imagens foram posteriormente analisadas com o programa QUANTPORO, e a característica analisada dos agregados foi a área e sua interrelação com atributos químicos do solo. Os resultados demonstraram que o sistema de plantio direto proporcionou a formação de agregados maiores, a soja como cultura de verão contribuiu para esse efeito estrutural no solo e a aplicação de gesso agrícola incrementou a agregação em maiores profundidades.

The aim of this work is to characterize, using a micromorphometric analysis, the aggregates of a Hapludox submitted to different management systems. This work was carried out in a Rhodic Hapludox in Dourados-MS. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with four replications and treatments arranged in sub-subdivided plots. Treatments were established in two management systems (conventional and notillage), two doses of gypsum (zero and 2 t ha-1) and the use of two summer crops (soybean and corn). Aggregates were collected, in depths of 0 to 10 and 10 to 20 cm, using, in experimental proceedings, those held in diameter intervals of 9.52 and 4.76 mm, after sieving in a standard sieve set. For collecting aggregates, 40 x 40 cm trenches were opened and sieving was done in the field. Aggregate analyses were done by digital images obtained by scanner (300 dpi) of 60 aggregates arranged in a tray with untidy holes in order to preserve the principle of randomization. Images were later analyzed using the QUANTPORO program, and the analyzed characteristics of the aggregates were the area and its inter-relation with chemical attributes of the soil. The results demonstrated that no-tillage promoted the formation of larger aggregates; soybean as summer culture contributed to that structural effect in the soil; and the application of gypsum increased the aggregation in larger depths.

A degradação é considerada o maior problema das pastagens cultivadas no Cerrado. Em Neossolo Quartzarênico, foi conduzido um experimento para avaliar diversos tratamentos de renovação de pastagem degradada de Brachiaria decumbens, introduzindo Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu. Os tratamentos foram: Testemunha; Calagem; Calagem + P; Calagem + ½(PK); Calagem + PK; Calagem + PK + Micronutrientes; Calagem + PK + Micronutrientes + Leguminosa. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Realizaram-se três cortes, em 325 dias, e, ao final, avaliação da produção de raízes e análise química do solo. Todos os tratamentos de renovação diferiram da testemunha e alguns deles diferiram entre si na produção de massa seca da parte aérea, destacando-se o tratamento com leguminosa. A produção de raízes foi significativamente superior em três tratamentos quando comparados à testemunha. Foram verificados aumentos significativos nos teores de nutrientes e pH do solo, com a aplicação de calcário e fertilizantes.

The degradation is considered to be the major problem of cultivated pastures in the Cerrado. In Quartzipsament, an experiment was conducted to evaluate several degraded pasture recovering treatments of Brachiaria decumbens, introducing Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu. The treatments were: Witness; Liming; Liming + P; Liming + ½(PK); Liming + PK. Liming + PK + Micronutrients; Liming + PK + Micronutrients + Legume. The experimental design was that of randomized blocks with four replications. Three cuts in a 325 days period were done and, in the end, the evaluation of roots production and soil chemical analysis. All renovation systems differed from the witness and some of them differed among themselves in terms of dry mass of aerial portion, with emphasis to the legume treatment. The roots production was significantly greater in three treatments when compared to the witness. Significant increases in the nutrient levels and soil pH were verified, in function of lime and fertilization application.

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da gessagem, em função de dois sistemas de manejo de solo sobre alguns atributos químicos e físicos de um Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico. Os tratamentos consistiam em ausência e adição de 2000 kg ha-1 de gesso agrícola, submetidos a dois sistemas de cultivo (plantio direto e preparo convencional). A cultura utilizada no experimento foi a soja, que teve como cultura antecessora o trigo. O delineamento experimental adotado foi em blocos casualizados, arranjado em esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas, com quatro repetições. Os atributos químicos analisados foram: pH em CaCl2, P, Al+3, Ca+2, Mg+2, K+, H++Al+3, saturação por alumínio, saturação e soma de bases e capacidade de troca de cátions. Dentre os atributos físicos, analisaram-se: densidades de partículas e do solo e a porosidade total. A interação entre manejo do solo e gessagem foi significativa para a densidade e a porosidade total do solo, com aumento da densidade e diminuição da porosidade no solo sob plantio direto em função do gesso. O sistema de manejo e o efeito da gessagem não induziram diferenças significativas nos atributos químicos do solo, exceto no teor de fósforo, que foi maior no plantio direto.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the gypsum residual effect and two tillage systems as for their chemical and physical attributes in a red dystroferric Latossol (Hapludox). The experiment was carried out in 2004/2005 on the experimental field of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul - UFMS, in Dourados, State of Mato Grosso do Sul. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in sub-subdivided plots with four replications. Main plots consisted of two tillage system (no tillage and conventional tillage). The subdivided plots were gypsum doses (0 and 2000 kg ha-1) and sub-subdivided plots, the depths. The following parameters were estimated: pH in CaCl2, P, Ca+2, Mg+2, K+, Al+3, H++Al+3, aluminum saturation, base saturation, bases sum, cation exchange capability, particle density, soil bulk density, soil total porosity. The interaction between tillage system and gypsum dose was significant for soil density and total porosity, with an increase in the soil density and a reduction in the total porosity in combination with no tillage and 2000 kg ha-1 of gypsum. The tillage system and gypsum effect did not affect the chemical attributes, except for the P drift which was bigger in no tillage system than in conventional tillage.
