Resumo Neste estudo, analisamos dados climáticos, um modelo de balanço hídrico e dados de caducifolia de árvores com o objetivo de determinar a fisionomia de uma floresta em São João de Petrópolis, região central do Espírito Santo, Brasil. Hipotetizamos que a floresta estudada seria um remanescente das florestas decíduas relatadas por naturalistas nos séculos XIX e XX, apesar do atual Mapa de Vegetação do Brasil indicar apenas florestas pluviais para a localidade. Dados obtidos de uma estação meteorológica local indicam que o clima é quente e com distribuição sazonal de chuvas. Embora a estação seca tenha durado seis meses em média (abril-setembro), períodos secos mais longos foram recorrentes nas últimas quatro décadas. Dentre 354 árvores amostradas no estrato superior da floresta no final da estação seca, 65,2% não possuíam folhagem, 18,1% possuíam folhagem parcial e 16,7% possuíam folhagem completa. A proporção de árvores sem folhagem foi superior a 60% em todas as classes de altura desse estrato. Esses atributos, bem como alguns registros de espécies arbóreas típicas de florestas estacionais, confirmam que a floresta é estacional decídua. Nossos resultados refinam o Mapa de Vegetação do Brasil e podem fomentar discussões sobre a controversa classificação das florestas do Estado do Espírito Santo.

Abstract In this study we analyzed climatic data, a water balance model, and data on tree deciduousness aiming to determine the physiognomy of a forest in São João de Petrópolis, central Espírito Santo, Brazil. We hypothesized that the studied forest stand would be a remnant of the deciduous forests that were reported by naturalists in both centuries XIX and XX, even though the current Vegetation Map of Brazil indicates only dense rainforests for this place. Data obtained from a local weather station indicate that climate in the site is hot and with seasonal distribution of rainfall. Although the dry season has lasted in average six months (April-September), dry periods longer than six months were recurrent throughout the four last decades. Among the 354 trees that were sampled in the upper storey at the end of the dry season, 65.2% had no foliage, 18.1% had partial foliage, and 16.7% had full foliage. Percentages of deciduous trees were higher than 60% in all height classes of the upper storey. These attributes, as well as some records of tree species that are typical of seasonal forests, confirm that the forest is seasonal deciduous. Our results refine the Vegetation Map of Brazil and may foment discussions about the controversial classification of the forests of Espírito Santo state.

ABSTRACT This study is based on the hypothesis that unmanaged plantations of commercial species do not prevent understory colonization by native species. The research aimed to describe the floristic composition and structure of native arboreal species in the understory of a Corymbia citriodora stand. To this end, 112 plots (10 × 10 m; 1.12 ha) were installed. Six hundred native tree individuals distributed in 54 species, 44 genera, and 20 families were recorded. The regeneration diversity and evenness indices were 3.23 and 0.81, respectively. Native regeneration of C. citriodora understory shows features typical of semideciduous seasonal forests and seems to be at the early stage of regeneration. Results suggest that C. citriodora stands do not prevent understory colonization by native species.

Resumo: A floresta costeira do estado da Bahia, no nordeste do Brasil, tem sido apontada como área de endemismo para diversos grupos de organismos. O primeiro levantamento de espécies de angiospermas endêmicas dessa região foi realizado há cerca de 15 anos e revelou a ocorrência de 395 táxons. Entretanto, esse número provavelmente está subestimado. Neste trabalho apresentamos uma lista atualizada de táxons de angiospermas endêmicas da Floresta Costeira da Bahia (FCB), tendo como base as informações de distribuição geográfica disponíveis na lista da Flora do Brasil. Estas informações foram posteriormente checadas em registros de herbários, estudos taxonômicos recentes e, quando necessário, revisadas por especialistas. A lista final de espécies é constituída por 547 táxons endêmicos da Floresta Costeira da Bahia, distribuídos em 69 famílias e incluindo sete gêneros endêmicos: Bahiella (Apocynaceae), Santosia (Asteraceae), Harleyodendron (Fabaceae), Cubitanthus (Linderniaceae), Anomochloa e Parianella (Poaceae), and Andreadoxa (Rutaceae). As famílias mais ricas em táxons endêmicos são Bromeliaceae (108 spp.), Fabaceae (41 spp.) e Myrtaceae (32 spp.). Apenas 143 táxons são compartilhados por esta lista atualizada e uma lista preliminar publicada há cerca de 15 anos. As duas listas diferem especialmente por ligeiras diferenças nos limites da área de estudo e também pelo acréscimo de novas espécies endêmicas descritas desde então. Espera-se que a lista seja usada como ferramenta para estudos futuros e para a conservação da rica flora costeira da Bahia.

Abstract: The forest along the coast of Bahia state, in northeastern Brazil, has been acknowledged as an area of endemism for several groups of organisms. The first study concerning endemic angiosperm species in this region, through which 395 taxa were registered, was conducted 15 years ago. However, this number is probably underrated. In this article, we present an updated checklist of angiosperm taxa in Bahia Coastal Forests (BCF) based on geographic distribution data available from the Brazilian Plant List (Flora do Brasil 2020). The records were checked in herbaria, recent taxonomic literature, and, when necessary, reviewed by experts. The final checklist consists of 547 taxa endemic to BCF, distributed in 69 families, with seven endemic genera: Bahiella (Apocynaceae), Santosia (Asteraceae), Harleyodendron (Fabaceae), Cubitanthus (Linderniaceae), Anomochloa and Parianella (Poaceae), and Andreadoxa (Rutaceae). The families with highest richness in endemic taxa were Bromeliaceae (108 spp.), Fabaceae (41 spp.) and Myrtaceae (32 spp.). This updated checklist shares only 143 taxa with a previous list published about 15 years ago. Those two lists differ mostly due to slightly different area limits, and to the large number of additional endemic species described since then. We hope our list will be used as a resource in future studies and contributes to the conservation of the highly diverse Bahia Coastal Forest.

Resumo Este estudo apresenta uma lista de licófitas e samambaias de florestas semidecíduas secundárias em São João de Petrópolis, Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo, Brasil. Registramos 37 espécies (quatro licófitas e 33 samambaias) pertencentes a nove famílias e 17 gêneros. Selaginella é o único gênero representando as licófitas, enquanto Adiantum, Anemia e Asplenium são os principais gêneros representativos de samambaias. A maioria das espécies são litófitas (48,6%) ou terrestres (21,6%). Epífitas são escassas (8,2%) e não registramos nenhuma espécie arborescente, hemiepífita ou escandente. A sazonalidade climática, o tamanho reduzido dos fragmentos florestais e o histórico de perturbações podem explicar a baixa riqueza no local. Registramos a ocorrência de uma espécie de samambaia ameaçada regionalmente, a saber, Asplenium austrobrasiliense, e revelamos o primeiro registro de Asplenium otites no Espírito Santo. Isso demonstra a relevância biológica de remanescentes de floresta semidecídua no Espírito Santo e reforça os argumentos para a sua proteção efetiva.

Abstract This study presents a checklist of lycophytes and ferns from secondary semideciduous forests in São João de Petrópolis, Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo, Brazil. We recorded 37 species (four lycophytes and 33 ferns) belonging to nine families and 17 genera. Selaginella is the only genus representing lycophytes whereas Adiantum, Anemia and Asplenium are the main representative genera for ferns. Most species are lithophytes (48.6%) or terrestrial (21.6%). Epiphytes are scarce (8.2%), and we did not record any arborescent, hemiepiphyte or scandent species. Climate seasonality, reduced size of forest fragments, and disturbance history may explain the low richness in the site. We recorded the occurrence of a regionally threatened fern species, namely, Asplenium austrobrasiliense, and revealed the first record of Asplenium otites in Espírito Santo. This demonstrates the biological relevance of semideciduous forest remnants in Espírito Santo and reinforces arguments for their effective protection.

Resumo Apresentamos uma revisão das visões controversas acerca da classificação fisionômica da Floresta de Linhares, aqui definida como a floresta sobre tabuleiros costeiros que ocorre entre os rios Doce e Barra Seca, no norte do Espírito Santo. Compilamos informações sobre o clima estacional dessa região e analisamos a inter-relação das variações interanuais e da dinâmica sazonal da precipitação com atributos ecológicos da floresta. Nossas interpretações revelaram que dados mensais médios de precipitação não exprimem a realidade dos períodos biologicamente secos ano a ano e suas consequências sobre a fisionomia da vegetação. Percebemos que a Floresta de Linhares pode se manifestar como semidecídua ou perenifólia, a depender da severidade da seca em um dado período. Então, propomos que a flexibilidade do regime de renovação foliar da Floresta de Linhares deve ser considerada em sua classificação. Sugerimos classificar a floresta duplamente como estacional semidecidual nos períodos anuais ou supra-anuais caracterizados por deficit hídrico pronunciado, e como floresta estacional perenifólia nos períodos anuais ou supra-anuais sem deficit hídrico significativo.

Abstract We present a review of the controversial points of view concerning the physiognomic classification of Linhares Forest, which is defined here as the forest over coastal tablelands that is found between the Rio Doce and the Rio Barra Seca, in the north of Espírito Santo. We compiled information about the seasonal climate of such region and analyzed the relationship of both the interannual variation and the seasonality of the rainfall with the ecological attributes of the forest. Our interpretations unveiled that the average monthly rainfall does not express the reality of the biologically dry periods year after year nor does it express the consequences on the vegetation physiognomy. We perceived that Linhares Forest may manifest itself as semideciduous or evergreen, depending on the drought severity within a given period. Thus, we propose that the flexibility of Linhares Forest leaf flush regime must be considered in its classification. We suggest a double classification for the forest: one as a seasonal semideciduous forest during annual or supra-annual periods that are characterized by pronounced water deficit and the other as a seasonal evergreen forest during annual or supra-annual periods with no significant water deficit.
