Abstract Background: The plant community in southern Texas and the adjacent region in Mexico is Tamaulipan thornscrub (MET). However, the recently published proposals for quantitative hierarchical classification have evidenced the presence of more communities and the need for quantitative descriptions of these associations to determine their conservation status. Question: What is the structure and floristic composition of a semi-thorn shrubland in Reynosa’s northwestern region? Studied species: Tamaulipan low semi-thorn scrubland. Study site and dates: Hills in Reynosa’s northwestern region (Tamaulipas), Mexico. August 2018-July 2019. Methods: Abundance, height and coverage of each plant species were measured on 33 plots of 10 × 10 m. Horizontal structure was analyzed by Importance Value Index, vertical structure was estimated through a modification of the Pretzsch Index and in addition alpha diversity indices were calculated. Results: Richness was 55 species, within 54 genera and 25 families. The importance values were centered mainly in small, spineless shrub species (Lippia graveolens, Calliandra conferta, Turnera diffusa and Krameria ramosissima). The vertical structure presented four defined strata with 50 % of species equally represented in all strata and the remaining 50 % restricted to a single stratum (A = 2.86, Amax = 5.39, Arel = 52.98 %). The species with the highest proportional density were distributed only in stratum IV (0-1.12 m). Conclusions: The community is a clearly defined low semi-thorn scrubland. The structural characteristics indicate that it can be a possible transition plant association between MET and piedmont scrub. This reinforces the proposals of the recently published classification systems.

Resumen Antecedentes: La vegetación del sur de Texas y la región adyacente de México es el matorral espinoso tamaulipeco (MET). Sin embargo, los sistemas de clasificación jerárquicos cuantitativos recientes evidencian la presencia de más comunidades y la necesidad de descripciones cuantitativas para conocer su estado actual. Preguntas: ¿Cómo es la estructura y composición florística de un matorral subinerme en el noreste de México? Especies de estudio: Especies de un matorral bajo subinerme. Sitio y años de estudio: Lomeríos del noreste de México (Reynosa, Tamaulipas). Agosto 2018-julio 2019. Métodos: Se midió la abundancia, altura y cobertura de cada especie en 33 parcelas de 10 × 10 m. La estructura horizontal se analizó mediante el IVI, la vertical mediante una modificación del Índice de Pretzsch, además de calcularse índices de diversidad alfa. Resultados: La riqueza fue de 55 especies, 54 géneros y 25 familias. El valor de importancia se concentró principalmente en los de arbustos pequeños inermes (Lippia graveolens, Calliandra conferta, Turnera diffusa y Krameria ramosissima). La estructura vertical presentó cuatro estratos definidos con 50 % de las especies representadas en todos los estratos y el resto se restringió a un solo estrato (A = 2.86, Amax = 5.39, Arel = 52.98 %). Las especies con mayor densidad proporcional se distribuyeron solo en el estrato IV (0 a 1.12 m). Conclusiones: La comunidad corresponde a un matorral bajo subinerme claramente definido. La estructura indica un posible matorral de transición entre MET y matorral submontano. Esto refuerza las propuestas de clasificación recientemente publicadas.

Introduction: Gini coefficient (Gini index or Gini ratio) is a parameter that is normally used in economy to measure the income distribution in a country or in the whole wide world, but it can be used to measure any kind of distribution. In the present study it is exposed an innovative proposal of application of the Gini coefficient to Heart Rate Variability (HRV) like a psychophysiological indicator of mental stress. Purpose: To assess the application of the Gini coefficient as a psychophysiological indicator of mental stress. Methods: The involved participants are 13 healthy individuals (age 19 ± 1.5 years). Heart rate was continuously recorded at rest (5 minutes) and during a mental stress (5 minutes). Linear and nonlinear methods of heart rate variability were assessed, and 2 new indicators (Sequential and Non-Sequential Gini) were calculated and proposed to measure HRV differences between states. Results: When comparing rest and mental stress conditions, a sensible decrease of the traditional indicators of the HRV was founded (plt;0.05), an increase of the heart rate (p=0.004) and of the Sequential Gini (p=0.004) and Non-Sequential Gini (p=0.04). Conclusions: The results suggest that temporary inequality of the RR intervals analyzed from the Gini coefficient could be an adequate indicator of sympathetic activity present during the mental stress, with great potentialities with the objective to assess the consequences of psychosomatic affections and anxiety disorders.

Introducción: El coeficiente de Gini o índice de Gini es un parámetro que normalmente se usa en economía para medir la distribución del ingreso en un país o en todo el mundo, pero puede usarse para medir cualquier tipo de distribución. En el presente estudio se expone una propuesta innovadora de aplicación del coeficiente de Gini a la Variabilidad de la Frecuencia Cardíaca (VFC) como indicador psicofisiológico del estrés mental. Objetivo: Evaluar la aplicación del coeficiente de Gini como indicador psicofisiológico de estrés mental. Métodos: Los participantes involucrados son 13 individuos sanos (edad 19 ± 1,5 años). La frecuencia cardíaca se registró continuamente en reposo (5 minutos) y durante un estrés mental (5 minutos). Se evaluaron métodos lineales y no lineales de variabilidad de la frecuencia cardíaca, y se calcularon y propusieron 2 nuevos indicadores (Gini secuencial y no secuencial) para medir las diferencias de VFC entre estados. Resultados: Al comparar las condiciones de reposo y estrés mental, se encontró una sensible disminución de los indicadores tradicionales de la VFC (plt;0,05), un aumento de la frecuencia cardiaca (p=0,004) y del Gini Secuencial (p=0,004) y Gini no secuencial (p=0,04). Conclusiones: Los resultados sugieren que la desigualdad temporal de los intervalos RR analizados a partir del coeficiente de Gini podría ser un indicador adecuado de la actividad simpática presente durante el estrés mental, con grandes potencialidades en la evaluación las consecuencias de afecciones psicosomáticas y trastornos de ansiedad.

Introdução: O coeficiente de Gini ou índice de Gini é um parâmetro normalmente usado em economia para medir a distribuição de renda em um país ou no mundo, mas pode ser usado para medir qualquer tipo de distribuição. No presente estudo, apresenta-se uma proposta inovadora de aplicação do coeficiente de Gini à Variabilidade da Frequência Cardíaca (VFC) como indicador psicofisiológico de estresse mental.Objetivo: Avaliar a aplicação do coeficiente de Gini como indicador psicofisiológico de estresse mental.Métodos: Os participantes envolvidos são 13 indivíduos saudáveis (idade 19 ± 1,5 anos). A frequência cardíaca foi registrada continuamente em repouso (5 minutos) e durante o estresse mental (5 minutos). Abstract Blood pressure is an indispensable parameter in anesthetic monitoring. The measurement of invasive artery pressure (IBP) using peripheral arterial catheterization is reliable but requires experience and can lead to complications. The oscillometric technique is non-invasive (NIBP), it only requires a cuff over a peripheral artery and the measurement is automated. However, the accuracy of PANI has been little explored and, for this reason, this study aimed to compare this technique with PAI in sheep and goats. 20 sheep and 20 goats needed laparoscopy were used under general anesthesia. Once in anesthetic plane, the caudal auricular artery was catheterized and connected to an electronic pressure transducer, coupled to a multiparameter monitor to measure IBP, systolic (S), diastolic (D) and mean (M). At the same time, an appropriately sized cuff was placed over radial artery and connected to the same monitor. Every 5 minutes, blood pressures were recorded by both methods, subsequently compared by the Student test, correlated by Pearson and agreement assessed by the Bland-Altman. In sheep, DBP was similar and correlated between NIBP and IBP (P=0.69; r=0.65; bias 0.7 ± 13.1 mmHg), whereas SBP and MBP were overestimated by NIBP. In goats, MAP was similar and correlated between NIBP and IBP (P=0.566; r=0.57; bias 2.4 ± 20.2 mmHg), while SBP was overestimated and DBP underestimated. It is concluded that, in sheep only DBP and in goats, MBP, measured by the oscillometric method, are accurate, feasible and reliable alternatives for anesthetic monitoring of blood pressure.

Resumen La presión arterial es un parámetro indispensable en la monitorización anestésica. La medición de la presión arterial invasiva (PAI) mediante cateterismo arterial periférico es fiable, requiere experiencia y puede dar complicaciones. La técnica oscilométrica no es invasiva (PANI), requiere un manguito sobre una arteria periférica y medición automatizada. No obstante, la precisión de PANI ha sido poco explorada, por esta razón, este estudio tuvo por objetivo comparar esta técnica con la PAI en ovinos y caprinos. Se utilizaron 20 ovejas y 20 cabras que requerían laparoscopia bajo anestesia general. Una vez en plano anestésico, se cateterizó la arteria auricular caudal y se conectó a transductor de presión electrónico acoplado a monitor multiparamétrico para medir la PAI, sistólica (S), diastólica (D) y media (M). Al mismo tiempo, se colocó un manguito de tamaño adecuado sobre la arteria radial y se conectó al mismo monitor. Cada 5 minutos se registraron las presiones por ambos métodos, posteriormente se compraron por test de Student, correlacionaron por Pearson y se evaluó concordancia por Bland-Altman. En ovejas, la PAD fue similar y se correlacionó entre PANI y PAI (P=0,69; r=0,65; sesgo 0,7 ± 13,1 mmHg), mientras que PAS y MAP fueron sobreestimadas por PANI. En Cabras, la PAM fue similar y se correlacionó entre PANI y PAI (P=0,566; r=0,57; sesgo 2,4 ± 20,2 mmHg), mientras PAS se sobreestimó y PAD se subestimó. Se concluye que, en ovinos solo PAD y en caprinos PAM, medidas por el método oscilométrico son alternativas precisas, factibles y confiables para el monitoreo anestésico de la presión arterial.

Resumo A pressão arterial é um parâmetro indispensável na monitorização anestésica. A mensuração da pressão artéria invasiva (iPA) mediante cateterização arterial periférica é confiável, mas requer experiência e pode desencadear complicações. A técnica oscilométrica não é invasiva (NiPA), só requer um manguito sobre uma artéria periférica e a mensuração é automatizada. Não obstante a acurácia da NiPA tem sido pouco explorada e, por tal motivo, este estudo objetivou comparar esta técnica com a iPA em ovelhas e cabras. Foram utilizadas 20 ovelhas e 20 cabras que seriam submetidas a laparoscopia sob anestesia geral. Uma vez em plano anestésico, foi cateterizada a artéria auricular caudal e conectada a um transdutor eletrônico de pressão acoplado a monitor multiparamétrico para mensuração da iPA, sistólica (S), diastólica (D) e média (M). Ao mesmo tempo um manguito de tamanho apropriado foi posicionado sobre a artéria radial e conectado ao mesmo monitor. A cada 5 minutos foram registradas as pressões arteriais por ambos os métodos, posteriormente, comparadas pelo teste Student, correlacionados pelo Pearson e avaliada a concordância pelo Bland-Altman. Nas ovelhas, a PAD foi semelhante e correlacionada entre NiPA e iPA (P=0,69; r=0,65; viés 0,7 ± 13,1 mmHg), já a PAS e PAM foram superestimadas pela NiPA. Em Cabras, a PAM resultou semelhante e correlacionada entre NiPA e iPA (P=0,566; r=0,57; viés 2,4 ± 20,2 mmHg), enquanto PAS foi superestimada e PAD subestimada. Conclui-se que, em ovelhas apenas a PAD e em cabras a PAM, mensuradas pelo método oscilométrico, são alternativas acuradas, factíveis e confiáveis para a monitoração anestésica da pressão arterial.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The intensity of the thromboprophylaxis needed as a potential factor for preventing inpatient mortality due to coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between anticoagulation intensity and COVID-19 survival. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective observational study in a tertiary-level hospital in Spain. METHODS: Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) status was ascertained based on prescription at admission. To control for immortal time bias, anticoagulant use was analyzed as a time-dependent variable. RESULTS: 690 patients were included (median age, 72 years). LMWH was administered to 615 patients, starting from hospital admission (89.1%). 410 (66.7%) received prophylactic-dose LMWH; 120 (19.5%), therapeutic-dose LMWH; and another 85 (13.8%) who presented respiratory failure, high D-dimer levels (> 3 mg/l) and non-worsening of inflammation markers received prophylaxis of intermediate-dose LMWH. The overall inpatient-mortality rate was 38.5%. The anticoagulant nonuser group presented higher mortality risk than each of the following groups: any LMWH users (HR 2.1; 95% CI: 1.40-3.15); the prophylactic-dose heparin group (HR 2.39; 95% CI, 1.57-3.64); and the users of heparin dose according to biomarkers (HR 6.52; 95% CI, 2.95-14.41). 3.4% of the patients experienced major hemorrhage. 2.8% of the patients developed an episode of thromboembolism. CONCLUSIONS: This observational study showed that LMWH administered at the time of admission was associated with lower mortality among unselected adult COVID-19 inpatients. The magnitude of the benefit may have been greatest for the intermediate-dose subgroup. Randomized controlled trials to assess the benefit of heparin within different therapeutic regimes for COVID-19 patients are required.

Abstract Introduction Varying public views on cannabis use across countries may explain the variation in the prevalence of use, policies, and research in individual countries, and global regulation of cannabis. This paper aims to describe the current state of cannabis use, policies, and research across sixteen countries. Methods PubMed and Google Scholar were searched for studies published from 2010 to 2020. Searches were conducted using the relevant country of interest as a search term (e.g., “Iran”), as well as relevant predefined keywords such as “cannabis,” “marijuana,” “hashish,” “bhang “dual diagnosis,” “use,” “addiction,” “prevalence,” “co-morbidity,” “substance use disorder,” “legalization” or “policy” (in English and non-English languages). These keywords were used in multiple combinations to create the search string for studies’ titles and abstracts. Official websites of respective governments and international organizations were also searched in English and non-English languages (using countries national languages) to identify the current state of cannabis use, policies, and research in each of those countries. Results The main findings were inconsistent and heterogeneous reporting of cannabis use, variation in policies (e.g., legalization), and variation in intervention strategies across the countries reviewed. European countries dominate the cannabis research output indexed on PubMed, in contrast to Asian countries (Thailand, Malaysia, India, Iran, and Nepal). Conclusions Although global cannabis regulation is ongoing, the existing heterogeneities across countries in terms of policies and epidemiology can increase the burden of cannabis use disorders disproportionately and unpredictably. There is an urgent need to develop global strategies to address these cross-country barriers to improve early detection, prevention, and interventions for cannabis use and related disorders.

ABSTRACT The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are important for the development and survival of plants. This has motivated the analysis of the use of some AMF species with commercial use as crop biofertilizers at the national level. In Tamaulipas, knowledge of AMF diversity is scarce. The objective of this work was to determine the presence and taxonomic identity of AMF associated with the Euphorbiaceae family (sensu lato) in the Altas Cumbres Protected Area. The spores were obtained through propagules extracted from trap plants of different species grown in the soil and roots of the area under study. The mycorrhizal status was determined by the Phillips and Hayman staining technique and the identification of AMF through the extraction of spores by the wet sieving method with sucrose centrifugation and their morphological characterization. All the roots showed typical AMF structures, evidencing the presence of this association in the 74 euphorbiaceae taxa. A richness of 9 AMF species located within 6 genera, 4 families and 3 orders were recorded, with Glomus (Glomeraceae famiy) being the genus with the highest specific richness. The presence of the genera Entrophospora, Funneliformis and Rhizophagus was detected for the first time in Tamaulipas. The results denote how widely distributed AMF are found in plants of the Euphorbiaceae family in the Altas Cumbres Protected Area, highlighting the need to continue with investigations on arbuscular mycorrhizae.

RESUMEN Los hongos micorrízicos arbusculares (HMA) son importantes para el desarrollo y supervivencia de las plantas. Esto ha motivado el análisis del uso de algunas especies de HMA de uso comercial como biofertilizantes de cultivos a nivel nacional. En Tamaulipas, el conocimiento acerca de la diversidad de HMA es escaso. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar la presencia e identidad taxonómica de hongos micorrízicos arbusculares asociados a la familia Euphorbiaceae (sensu lato) en el Área Natural Protegida Altas Cumbres. Las esporas fueron obtenidas a través de propágulos extraídos de plantas trampa de diferentes especies, cultivadas en suelo y raíces de la zona de estudio. El estatus micorrízico se determinó mediante la técnica de tinción de Phillips y Hayman y la identificación de HMA, a través de la extracción de esporas por el método de tamizado húmedo con centrifugación con sacarosa, y su caracterización morfológica. Todas las raíces mostraron estructuras típicas de los HMA, evidenciando la presencia de esta asociación en los 74 taxones de euforbiáceas. Se registró una riqueza de 9 especies de HMA ubicadas dentro de 6 géneros, 4 familias y 3 órdenes, siendo Glomus (Familia Glomeraceae) el género con mayor riqueza específica. Se detectó la presencia de los géneros Entrophospora, Funneliformis y Rhizophagus por primera vez en Tamaulipas. Los resultados denotan lo ampliamente distribuidos que se encuentran los HMA en las plantas de la familia Euphorbiaceae en el Área Natural Protegida Altas Cumbres y la necesidad e importancia de continuar con investigaciones sobre las micorrizas arbusculares.

ABSTRACT Porcine epidemic diarrhoea (PED) is a disease caused by an alphacoronavirus and the symptoms include watery diarrhoea and vomiting, with more than 80% mortality amongst newborn piglets. The placentation in sows hinders the transference of antibodies to the foetus, therefore, the vaccination of pregnant females and transference of antibodies to piglets through colostrum are essential to protect them against virus particles. The aim of the study was to determine whether vaccination of nulliparous gilts could induce a high colostrum antibody titre and lower litter mortality, in comparison with vaccinated multiparous sows previously exposed to the virus. Samples of colostrum were obtained from 11 nulliparous gilts with two previous vaccinations (inactivated vaccine) and from 9 multiparous sows with three or more vaccinations (inactivated vaccine) that had been exposed to the virus. The IgG antibody titre was determined through anti-PED enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and the neutralisation of antibodies was evaluated through plaque reduction neutralisation tests (PRNT). The colostrum of nulliparous gilts, when compared to the multiparous sows, presented a lower anti-PED IgG antibody titre as well as fewer neutralising antibodies. Furthermore, the piglets of multiparous sows experienced higher survival in comparison with those of nulliparous gilts (P<0.01), and mortality was dependent on the 'farrowing' variable (P<0.01). In conclusion, these results show that vaccinating nulliparous gilts does not increase the survival of their piglets in comparison with multiparous sows and that the IgG titres and neutralising antibodies are significantly lower in the former. These results suggest that a modified vaccine strategy is needed for nulliparous gilts to increase piglet protection.

ABSTRACT Terbinafine is a drug that can induce acute liver damage. We present the case of a 40-year-old male patient who developed liver dysfunction after 35 days of terbinafine treatment for onychomycosis. The anatomopathological study showed: acute hepatitis in resolution, in addition to ductopenia and cholestasis. These findings, without a history of viral or autoimmune hepatitis, are consistent with the diagnosis of drug-induced liver damage (DILI). In this report we present the first case in our country of a patient who is affected by an acute liver disease: terbinafine-induced liver injury, to which SARS-CoV-2 infection was later associated in the context of a pandemic.

RESUMEN La terbinafina es un fármaco que puede inducir daño hepático agudo. Presentamos el caso de un paciente varón de 40 años que desarrolló disfunción hepática después de 35 días de tratamiento con terbinafina por onicomicosis. El estudio anátomo patológico demostró: hepatitis aguda en resolución, además de ductopenia y colestasis. Estos hallazgos, sin el antecedente de hepatitis viral o autoinmune, son consistentes con el diagnóstico de daño hepático inducido por drogas (DILI). En este reporte presentamos el primer caso en nuestro país de un paciente que es afectado por una enfermedad hepática aguda: injuria hepática inducida por terbinafina, al cual se le asoció posteriormente infección por SARS-CoV-2 en el contexto de una pandemia.

Resumen Objetivo. Describir el perfil microbiológico y de resistencia bacteriana de los aislamientos en adultos con infecciones adquiridas en comunidad en el Hospital Universitario San José de junio 2016 a diciembre 2019. Metodología. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal, análisis retrospectivo de los aislamientos microbiológicos en adultos desde junio 2016 a diciembre 2019, basado en la data institucional. Se analizó la información con STATA15,0. Se obtuvo la aprobación del comité de ética del hospital. Resultados. Se incluyeron 5121 aislamientos microbiológicos, el 61% en el servicio de urgencias. El urocultivo fue la muestra más frecuente. Escherichia coli fue el germen más común tanto a nivel general como en urocultivos, hemocultivos y cultivos de líquido peritoneal. La resistencia a ampicilina y amp/sul fue elevada, hasta del 68% para E. coli. El 20% de los Staphylococcus aureus fueron resistentes a meticilina. Se observó una resistencia inusual a carbapenémicos por parte de Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Discusión. El perfil microbiológico concuerda con la literatura mundial y nacional, sin embargo, el HUSJ tiene un comportamiento microbiológico que debe ser estudiado a profundidad. Conclusión. Los porcentajes de resistencia a antibióticos de uso frecuente son elevados. Se requiere ajustes de las guías de manejo institucionales y nacionales.

Abstract Objetive. To describe the microbiological profile and resistance spectrum of the community acquired bacterial infection of the San Jose university hospital from june 2016 to december 2019 Methodology. A retrospective transverse descriptive study of microbial organisms found in adults in the institution from June 2016 to December 2019, the study is based in the hospital data. The analysis of the information was made with SATA 15.0. Results. 5121 samples were included, 61% from the emergency department. Urine culture was the most frequent sample taken. Escherichia coli was the most frequent isolated bacterial, in all samples, urine culture, blood culture, and peritoneal culture. Ampiciline r and ampiciline/sulbactam was high up to 68% of the E. Coli cultures. 20% of Staphylococcus aureus were methicillin resistant. Unusual carbapenemic resistance was found in the Pseudomona aeruginosa isolates.. Discussion. The data of the bacterial resistance spectrum Concord which was is found in the general medical literature, nevertheless the HUSJ, has a microbial behaviour that must be studied thoroughly. Conclusion. The antibiotic bacterial resistance to common used antibiotics is high. Adjustments are required in the instucional and national management guidelines

Abstract Background: The resistance against antimalarial drugs represents a global challenge in the fight and control of malaria. The Brazilian biodiversity can be an important tool for research and development of new medicinal products. In this context, toxinology is a multidisciplinary approach on the development of new drugs, including the isolation, purification, and evaluation of the pharmacological activities of natural toxins. The present study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxicity, as well as the antimalarial activity in silico and in vitro of four compounds isolated from Rhinella marina venom as potential oral drug prototypes. Methods: Four compounds were challenged against 35 target proteins from P. falciparum and screened to evaluate their physicochemical properties using docking assay in Brazilian Malaria Molecular Targets (BraMMT) software and in silico assay in OCTOPUS® software. The in vitro antimalarial activity of the compounds against the 3D7 Plasmodium falciparum clones were assessed using the SYBR Green I based assay (IC50). For the cytotoxic tests, the LD50 was determined in human pulmonary fibroblast cell line using the [3(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] (MTT) assay. Results: All compounds presented a ligand-receptor interaction with ten Plasmodium falciparum-related protein targets, as well as antimalarial activity against chloroquine resistant strain (IC50 = 3.44 μM to 19.11 μM). Three of them (dehydrobufotenine, marinobufagin, and bufalin) showed adequate conditions for oral drug prototypes, with satisfactory prediction of absorption, permeability, and absence of toxicity. In the cell viability assay, only dehydrobufotenin was selective for the parasite. Conclusions: Dehydrobufotenin revealed to be a potential oral drug prototype presenting adequate antimalarial activity and absence of cytotoxicity, therefore should be subjected to further studies.

Abstract For human/SARS-CoV-2 interactome genes ACE2, TMPRSS2 and BSG, there is a convincing evidence of association in Asians with influenza-induced SARS for TMPRSS2-rs2070788, tag-SNP of the eQTL rs383510. This case illustrates the importance of population genetics and of sequencing data in the design of genetic association studies in different human populations: the high linkage disequilibrium (LD) between rs2070788 and rs383510 is Asian-specific. Leveraging on a combination of genotyping and sequencing data for Native Americans (neglected in genetic studies), we show that while their frequencies of the Asian tag-SNP rs2070788 is, surprisingly, the highest worldwide, it is not in LD with the eQTL rs383510, that therefore, should be directly genotyped in genetic association studies of SARS in populations with Native American ancestry.

RESUMO As soluções sólidas de titanato de zirconato de chumbo, Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3 – PZT, são amplamente reconhecidas por representar um grupo especial de materiais ferroelétricos com várias aplicações potenciais em eletro-cerâmica e (micro) dispositivos eletrônicos. A cerâmica PZT é produzida por reação em estado sólido (via convencional) e temperaturas frequentemente acima de 1200 °C. Como conseqüência, o custo do produto cerâmico é caro. Apresentamos aqui as condições de síntese e processamento da cerâmica PZT 52/48 (x = 0,48), na qual foi possível reduzir a temperatura de sinterização para cerca de 900 ° C. Aplicamos uma rota para a obtenção de cerâmica ferroelétrica PZT52/48 através da sinterização de pós nanométricos preparados pelo método de síntese de precursores poliméricos (método de Pechini modificado). A sinterização foi realizada a uma temperatura de 900ºC por 2 horas e as amostras obtiveram 96% de sua densidade teórica e tamanho médio de grão de 1,3 µm. A permissividade elétrica das cerâmicas, estudada por espectroscopia de impedância, apresentou temperatura de Curie em torno de 390 ºC. As curvas da histerese ferroelétrica revelaram que a polarização remanescente é de 3,2 μC/cm2 e o campo coercitivo é de 10 kV/cm a 60 Hz. Todos os resultados e caracterizações mostraram que as amostras de PZT obtidas com a via polimérica são eficientes como as preparadas no protocolo SSR convencional.

ABSTRACT Lead zirconatetitanate solid solutions, Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3 – PZT, are widely recognized for representing a special group of ferroelectric materials with various potential applications in electroceramics and (micro)electronic devices. The PZT ceramics is produced by solid state reaction (conventional route) and temperatures frequently above 1200 °C. As a consequence, the cost of ceramic product is expensive. Herein, we present the synthesis and processing conditions of PZT52/48 (x = 0.48) ceramics in which it was possible to lower the sintering temperature down to around 900°C. We have applied a route for PZT52/48 obtaining ferroelectric ceramics through sintering of nanometric powders prepared by the polymeric precursor synthesis method (modified Pechini’s method). The sintering was achieved with a temperature of 900ºC for 2 hours and the samples got 96% of their theoretical density and 1.3 mm mean grain size. The electrical permittivity of the ceramic plates, studied by impedance spectroscopy, presented Curie temperature around 390 ºC. Ferroelectric hysteresis measurements revealed that the remnant polarization is 3.2 μC/cm2 and coercive field is 10 kV/cm at 60 Hz. All results and characterizations have shown that the PZT samples obtained with the polymeric route are efficient as the ones prepared in the conventional SSR protocol.

Abstract Background: Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that produces non-scarring hair loss around the body. Gene variants of the cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA4) gene, a negative regulator of T-cell response, have been associated with a predisposition to autoimmune diseases in different populations; however, the involvement of these genetic variants in the development of AA is controversial. Objective: The present study evaluated the potential association of two CTLA4 gene variants with alopecia areata in a Mexican population. Methods: We genotyped +49AG (rs231775) and CT60 (rs3087243) variants in 50 AA patients and 100 healthy control participants through PCR-RFLP. Results: No statistical difference was observed for either of the gene variants regarding allele or genotype frequencies between AA patients and the controls when the parameters of family/personal history of autoimmune diseases or gender were considered (p > 0.05). Study limitations: Small sample size of patients and the data were obtained from Northeast Mexico population. Conclusion: The genetic variants rs231775 and rs3087243 of the CTLA4 gene are not a risk factor for the development of alopecia areata in the analyzed Mexican population.
