ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the children and pre-adolescents' knowledge regarding terms that designate character strengths and to understand how they perceive the expression of these traits in their and other people's behavior. Seventeen participants aged eight to thirteen were interviewed (M = 10.6; SD = 1.5). For each strength, seven questions were asked, which investigated the definition and examples of the strength expression. The interviews were recorded and transcribed for content analysis, generating categories for each strength. The strengths most easily described by the participants and their respective definitions were: creativity (ability to create things), curiosity and love for learning (searching for knowledge and new experiences), honesty (speaking the truth), love (acts involving affection), kindness (helping and caring for others), teamwork (collaborative works in games or school activities), forgiveness (eight categories regarding their definition, without highlighting any) and hope (longing for a future event). These findings may make developing and evaluating character strengths in this age group more accessible.

RESUMEN. Este estudio buscó analizar el conocimiento de niños y pre-adolescentes sobre los términos que fueron designados como fortalezas de carácter, y comprender cómo perciben estos rasgos en sus proprios comportamientos y en los de otras personas. Diecisiete participantes entre ocho y trece años fueron entrevistados (M = 10.6; SD = 1.5). Para cada fortaleza, se hicieron siete preguntas, que investigaron la definición del término y ejemplos prácticos de su expresión. Las entrevistas fueron grabadas y transcritas para el análisis de contenido, creando categorías para cada fortaleza. Las fortalezas descritas por los participantes con mayor facilidad y sus respectivas definiciones fueron: creatividad (capacidad de crear cosas), curiosidad y amor por el aprendizaje (búsqueda de conocimiento y nuevas experiencias), honestidad (decir la verdad), amor (comportamientos afectivos), amabilidad (ayudar y cuidar a los demás), trabajo en equipo (desempeño del trabajo colaborativo en juegos o actividades escolares), perdón (ocho categorías con respecto a su definición, sin énfasis en ninguna) y esperanza (deseo por un evento futuro). Estos hallazgos pueden facilitar el desarrollo y la evaluación de las fortalezas con este grupo de edad.

RESUMO. Este estudo tem por objetivo analisar o conhecimento de crianças e pré-adolescentes em relação aos termos que designam as forças de caráter e compreender como percebem a expressão desses traços nos próprios comportamentos e nos de outras pessoas. Foram entrevistados 17 participantes, de oito a 13 anos (M = 10,6; DP = 1,5). Para cada força foram feitas sete perguntas, que investigavam a definição do termo e exemplos da expressão da força nos outros e nos próprios entrevistados. As entrevistas foram gravadas e transcritas para análise de conteúdo, ao fim gerando categorias para cada força. As forças descritas com maior facilidade pelos participantes e suas respectivas definições foram criatividade (capacidade de criar coisas), curiosidade e amor ao aprendizado (busca de conhecimento e novas experiências), honestidade (falar a verdade), amor (comportamento de dar carinho), bondade (ajudar e cuidar do outro), trabalho em equipe (realização de trabalhos colaborativos em brincadeiras ou atividades escolares), perdão (08 categorias a respeito de sua definição, sem destaque para alguma) e esperança (desejar acontecimento futuro). Esses achados podem tornar mais acessível o desenvolvimento e a avaliação das forças nessa faixa etária.

Abstract Background: Studies on social participation point out some limitations in participatory architecture. For this reason, the World Health Organization designed a model with key components for bringing civil society and governments closer together. Objectives: This study aimed to identify the aspects that influence participation based on the components proposed by the World Health Organization. Methodology: This case study used a qualitative and cross-sectional approach. Data were collected through document analysis, non-participant observation, and semi-structured interviews in 2020 and 2021 with the municipal health council members of an inland city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Results: Weaknesses were observed in the council’s institutional structure, such as excessive bureaucracy, lack of user representativeness, and council members’ insecurity regarding the municipality’s health-related economic-financial issues. Conclusion: There is a need to strengthen the culture of participation in this municipal health council, disseminate the activities developed, and reformulate the technical-bureaucratic dynamics that predominate in this environment.

Resumen Marco contextual: Los estudios sobre participación social señalan algunas limitaciones en la arquitectura participativa, por lo que la Organización Mundial de la Salud ha diseñado un modelo que hace hincapié en las dimensiones constitutivas para acercar a la sociedad civil y a los gobiernos. Objetivos: El estudio pretendía identificar los elementos que influyen en la participación en función de las dimensiones propuestas por la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Metodología: Se trata de un estudio de caso, con un enfoque cualitativo y transversal, que se llevó a cabo mediante el análisis documental, la observación no participante y entrevistas semiestructuradas en los años 2020 y 2021 con los consejeros del CMS de una ciudad brasileña del interior del estado de São Paulo. Resultados: Se observaron deficiencias en las arquitecturas institucionales del consejo estudiado, tales como la excesiva burocracia, la falta de representatividad de los usuarios, la inseguridad de los consejeros en los asuntos económicos y financieros relacionados con la salud del municipio. Conclusión: Se sugiere la necesidad de fortalecer la cultura participativa en el consejo municipal de salud estudiado, sobre todo la necesidad de difundir las acciones desarrolladas y reformular la lógica tecnoburocrática predominante en este entorno.

Resumo Enquadramento: Estudos sobre a participação social apontam algumas limitações na arquitetura participativa, razão pela qual a Organização Mundial da Saúde desenhou um modelo que enfatiza as dimensões constitutivas para aproximar a sociedade civil e os governos. Objetivos: O estudo buscou identificar os elementos que influenciam a participação à luz das dimensões propostas pela Organização Mundial da Saúde. Metodologia: Trata-se de estudo de caso, com abordagem qualitativa e transversal, que foi realizado por meio de análise documental, observação não participante e entrevistas semiestruturadas nos anos de 2020 e 2021 com os conselheiros do Conselho Municipal de Saúde de uma cidade brasileira do interior do Estado de São Paulo. Resultados: Foram observadas fragilidades nas arquiteturas institucionais do Conselho estudado, tais como o excesso de burocracia, falta de representatividade dos utilizadores, insegurança por parte dos conselheiros nos assuntos económico-financeiros relacionados à saúde do município. Conclusão: Conclui-se pela necessidade de fortalecimento da cultura participativa no Conselho Municipal de Saúde estudado, destacando-se a necessidade de divulgação das ações desenvolvidas e reformulação da lógica tecnoburocrática predominante neste ambiente.

Abstract Background Cardiovascular risk factors are prognostic factors in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and have been scarcely studied in Brazil. Objective The aim of this study was to assess the impact of cardiovascular risk factors on the outcomes of patients admitted for COVID-19. Methods From July 2020 to February 2021, 200 patients from two public hospitals were enrolled. Patients were included if they had typical symptoms or signs of COVID-19, a positive real-time polymerase chain reaction test (RT-PCR) for COVID-19, and an age above 18 years. This is a prospective, observational, and longitudinal study. Data were collected within 24 h of admission. The primary endpoint was a combination of hospital lethality, mechanical ventilation, hemodialysis, or length of hospital stay >28 days. Continuous variables were compared with the Student’s t-test for independent samples or the Mann-Whitney test. For comparisons of proportions, the χ 2 test was applied. ROC curves and survival curves were constructed. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify independent predictors of events. The level of significance was 0.05. Results There were 98 (49%) events during the hospital course, and 72 (36%) died in the hospital. Patients with a primary endpoint were older and more likely to have a history of hypertension, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Vital signs at admission associated with events were diastolic blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation in ambient air (O 2 Sat). Serum creatinine >1.37 mg/dL at admission had a sensitivity of 51.6 and a specificity of 82% to predict the primary endpoint, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.68. In multivariate analysis, age, diabetes, CKD, and COPD were independent predictors of the primary endpoint. Age and CKD were independent predictors of in-hospital lethality. Conclusion Cardiovascular risk factors, such as diabetes and CKD, were related to a worse prognosis in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in this sample from two public hospitals in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

ABSTRACT Bacterial cellulose (BC) has stood out in the biomedical field for its biocompatibility, non-toxicity and high liquid absorption capacity. Thus, studies have been conducted aiming at the functionalization of BC with substances that add properties, such as anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial action. Hamamelis virginiana plant extract is known for its astringent, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Thus, the present work aimed to incorporate aqueous (AE) and glycolic (GE) extracts of witch hazel in different concentrations to BC, aiming at its application as a curative. BC membranes incorporated with the extracts were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and antimicrobial activity. The TGA results indicated a reduction in thermal stability and the appearance of a new stage of degradation in the samples that underwent incorporation. Furthermore, the FTIR showed the presence of aromatic compounds not found in the BC, corroborating the TGA. The micrographs revealed that the incorporation of the extracts resulted in the formation of a film on the surface of the membranes, covering the nanofibers. These results show that incorporating the aqueous and glycol extracts in the BC membrane was successful. However, despite the crude extracts’ antimicrobial potential, antimicrobial activity in the functionalized BC samples was not observed.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

RESUMO A brusone causada pelo patógeno Magnaporthe oryzae é a principal doença do arroz, e pode causar perdas devastadoras. Objetivou-se investigar o perfil de compostos voláteis da micorriza Waitea circinata no antagonismo a M. oryzae, em diferentes períodos e temperaturas, utilizando-se delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Compostos orgânicos voláteis foram extraídos por micro extração em fase sólida, no modo headspace, e analisados por cromatografia gasosa acoplada a espectrometria de massas, enquanto o escalonamento multidimensional foi usado para comparar os compostos orgânicos voláteis produzidos. ABSTRACT Rice blast caused by the Magnaporthe oryzae pathogen is a major disease in this crop, and may cause devastating losses. This study aimed to investigate the profile of Waitea circinata mycorrhiza volatile compounds in antagonism to M. oryzae, under different growth periods and temperatures, using a completely randomized design. Volatile organic compounds were extracted by headspace solid phase microextraction and analyzed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry, while multidimensional scaling was used to compare the produced volatile organic compounds. RESUMO Antecedentes: A lesão axonial difusa ocorre em traumas com alta energia de aceleração e desaceleração, determinando desorganização da microestrutura cerebral, levando a algum déficit. A escala de Glasgow Estendida (GOS-E) é indicada na avaliação clínica das vítimas de trauma cranioencefalico. Imagens por tensor de difusão (DTI) estudam a microestrutura cerebral a partir da difusão das moléculas de água. Objetivo: Investigar a microestrutura cerebral no primeiro ano após trauma, avaliar clinicamente os pacientes e testar para correlações entre estes resultados. Métodos: 20 vítimas de TCE moderado e grave foram avaliados 2 meses e 1 ano depois do trauma. O processamento foi feito usando o software FMRIB (FSL) e a análise estatística foi feita com tract-based spatial statistics software para extrair os parâmetros de DTI. Calculamos a diferença da média entre as duas observações de cada sujeito e fizemos um teste-t para uma amostra e threshold-free cluster enhancement. Realizamos correções para múltiplas comparações e determinamos o valor de p < 0.05 como significativo. Um ano após o trauma, a avaliação clínica foi feita usando a GOS-E. Testamos para associações entre os resultados clínicos e os valores médios de FA dos clusters. Resultados: Os clusters significativos foram identificados usando o atlas JHU WM. Observamos aumento de FA predominantemente no hemisfério cerebral direito e cerebelar à esquerda e também extensas áreas de aumento nos demais parâmetros de DTI. A recuperação dos pacientes foi satisfatória. Conclusões: Não encontramos associações entre os resultados, no entanto alguma associação pequena a moderada não pode ser excluída.

ABSTRACT Background: Diffuse axonal injury occurs with high acceleration and deceleration forces in traumatic brain injury (TBI). This lesion leads to disarrangement of the neuronal network, which can result in some degree of deficiency. The Extended Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS-E) is the primary outcome instrument for the evaluation of TBI victims. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) assesses white matter (WM) microstructure based on the displacement distribution of water molecules. Objective: To investigate WM microstructure within the first year after TBI using DTI, the patient’s clinical outcomes, and associations. Methods: We scanned 20 moderate and severe TBI victims at 2 months and 1 year after the event. Imaging processing was done with the FMRIB software library; we used the tract-based spatial statistics software yielding fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD) for statistical analyses. We computed the average difference between the two measures across subjects and performed a one-sample t-test and threshold-free cluster enhancement, using a corrected p-value < 0.05. Clinical outcomes were evaluated with the GOS-E. We tested for associations between outcome measures and significant mean FA clusters. Results: Significant clusters of altered FA were identified anatomically using the JHU WM atlas. We found increasing spotted areas of FA with time in the right brain hemisphere and left cerebellum. Extensive regions of increased MD, RD, and AD were observed. Patients presented an excellent overall recovery. Conclusions: There were no associations between FA and outcome scores, but we cannot exclude the existence of a small to moderate association.

Resumo Objetivo verificar a prevalência de sintomas de depressão pós-parto em puérperas atendidas em uma maternidade pública e sua associação com características socioeconômicas e de apoio social. Método estudo epidemiológico, analítico, do tipo transversal, em uma maternidade pública conduzido de agosto a outubro de 2017. A amostra de 330 puérperas foi entrevistada por meio da aplicação de um formulário, para mensuração da presença de sintomas de depressão pós-parto. Foi utilizada a escala de depressão pós-natal de Edimburgo. Já para mensuração do apoio social, foi utilizado o instrumento Medical Outcomes Study. A medida de associação adotada foi a razão de prevalência (RP) com intervalos de confiança de 95% (IC95%), e aplicada a regressão de Poisson ajustada. Resultados a prevalência de sintomas de DPP foi de 29,7%. A idade entre 14 e 24 anos (PR:1,60; 95%CI: 1,10–2,34), ter até 8 anos de escolaridade (RP:1,39; IC95%:1,01–2,14) e o baixo nível de suporte social afetivo (RP:1,52; IC95%:1,07–2,14) e emocional (RP:2,12; IC95%:1,41-3,19) estiveram associados à maior prevalência de sintomas de DPP. Conclusão e implicações para a prática nesse contexto, os profissionais de saúde podem possuir um papel essencial no qual podem desenvolver, em conjunto, um plano de cuidados de acordo com as necessidades da mulher em período gravídico-puerperal.

Abstract Objective to verify the prevalence of postpartum depression symptoms in postpartum women assisted at a public maternity hospital and its association with socioeconomic and social support characteristics. Method this is an epidemiological, analytical, cross-sectional study in a public maternity hospital conducted from August to October 2017. A sample of 330 postpartum women was interviewed using a form to measure the presence postpartum depression symptoms. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was used. To measure social support, the Medical Outcomes Study instrument was used. The measure of association adopted was the prevalence ratio (PR) with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI), and adjusted Poisson regression was applied. Results the prevalence of PPD symptoms was 29.7%. Age between 14 and 24 years (PR:1.60; 95%CI: 1.10–2.34), have up to 8 years of education (PR:1.39; 95%CI: 1.01–2.14) and the low level of affective (PR:1.52; 95%CI: 1.07–2.14) and emotional (PR:2.12; 95%CI: 1.41-3.19) social support were associated with higher prevalence of PPD symptoms. Conclusion and implications for practice in this context, health professionals can play an essential role in which they can jointly develop a care plan according to the needs of women in the pregnancy-puerperal period.

La medida de asociación adoptada fue la razón de prevalencia (RP) con intervalos de confianza del 95% (IC del 95%) y se aplicó la regresión de Poisson ajustada. Resultados la prevalencia de síntomas de DPP fue de 29,7%. Edad entre 14 y 24 años (PR:1,60; 95%CI: 1,10–2,34), tener hasta 8 años de escolaridad (RP: 1,39; IC 95%: 1,01 - 2,14) y el bajo nivel de apoyo social afectivo (RP: 1,52; IC del 95%: 1,07 - 2,14) y emocional (RP: 2,12; IC del 95%: 1,41-3,19) se asociaron con una mayor prevalencia de síntomas de PPD. Conclusión e implicaciones para la práctica en este contexto, los profesionales de la salud pueden jugar un papel fundamental en el que puedan desarrollar conjuntamente un plan de cuidados acorde a las necesidades de la mujer en el período gestacional-puerperal.

Abstract Aims: To describe reference values for the Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test (CKCUEST) and Upper Quarter Y Balance Test (UQYBT) in young adults, and to determine whether there were differences in both tests based on gender and age. Intrarater reliability and measurement error were also assessed. Methods: Test-retest design with a sample of 146 young adults. The CKCUEST (number of touches, normalized score, and power) and the UQYBT (normalized reach in the medial, superolateral, and inferolateral direction, and the composite score) were used. Mean and standard deviation were calculated for both tests. A linear and a mixed regression model were applied to determine significant differences in test scores. Reliability was determined using Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and error measurement through Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) and Smallest Detectable Change (SDC). Results: Normative values were established and divided by gender and age. Men presented greater scores regarding the number of touches, power score, superolateral and inferolateral reaches. Good intrarater reliability was found for both tests. In the CKCUEST, the SEM and SDC values were 1 and 3 touches. In the UQYBT, the SEM values ranged from 3 to 7 cm, while the SDC ranged from 8 to 19 cm. Conclusion: Normative data were provided and men presented greater scores than women. Good intrarater reliability was found and values of SEM and SDC were established. Clinicians must use both tests in clinical practice since different aspects of the upper quarter are assessed.

Abstract Objective: To describe the prevalence of heavy episodic drinking in the Brazilian adult population, according to sociodemographic characteristics, in 2013 and in 2019. Methods: A cross-sectional study using data on heavy episodic drinking among adults (≥ 18 years) from the National Health Survey, analyzed descriptively. Results: 60,202 participants were included in 2013 and 88,531 in 2019. The prevalence of heavy episodic drinking, in 2019 (17.1%; 95%CI 16.6;17.5), was higher than 2013 (13.1%; 95%CI 13.1;14.2). In the two years, there was a higher prevalence among male sex, adults 18 to 39 years old, individuals with high schooling and Black skin color. In addition, higher prevalence were found among residents in urban areas and in the Midwest and Southeast regions. Conclusion: The indication of the growing prevalence of alcohol abuse in Brazil and the differences in prevalence, according to sociodemographic characteristics, show the need to encourage public policies and actions to combat its use.

Resumo Objetivo: Descrever a prevalência do consumo abusivo de bebidas alcoólicas na população adulta brasileira, segundo características sociodemográficas, em 2013 e 2019. Métodos: Estudo transversal, utilizando dados do consumo abusivo de álcool entre adultos (≥ 18 anos) da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde, analisados descritivamente. Resultados: Foram incluídos 60.202 participantes em 2013 e 88.531 em 2019. A prevalência de consumo abusivo de bebidas alcoólicas, em 2019 (17,1%; IC95% 16,6;17,5), foi superior a 2013 (13,1%; IC95% 13,1;14,2). Nos dois anos, verificaram-se maiores prevalências entre o sexo masculino, os adultos de 18 a 39 anos, indivíduos com alta escolaridade, residentes em áreas urbanas e nas regiões Centro-Oeste e Sudeste e de raça/cor da pele preta. Conclusão: O indicativo da crescente prevalência do consumo abusivo de bebidas alcoólicas no Brasil e as diferenças nas prevalências, segundo características sociodemográficas, evidenciam a necessidade de incentivo a políticas públicas e ações de enfrentamento ao seu uso.

Resumen Objetivo: Describir la prevalencia del consumo excesivo de alcohol en la población adulta brasileña, según características sociodemográficas, en 2013 y en 2019. Métodos: Estudio transversal utilizando datos sobre abuso de alcohol en adultos (≥ 18 años) de la Encuesta Nacional de Salud, analizados de forma descriptiva. Resultados: Se incluyeron 60,202 participantes en 2013 y 88.531 en 2019. La prevalencia del consumo excesivo de alcohol, en 2019 (17,1%; IC95% 16,6;17,5), fue mayor que en 2013 (13,1%; IC95% 13,1;14,2). En los dos años, hubo mayor prevalencia entre lo sexo masculino, adultos de 18 y 39 años, personas con estudios secundarios y de piel negra. Además, se encontraron prevalencias más altas entre los residentes en áreas urbanas y en las regiones del Medio Oeste y Sudeste. Conclusión: El indicio de la creciente prevalencia del abuso de alcohol en Brasil y las diferencias, según características sociodemográficas, muestran la necesidad de impulsar políticas públicas y acciones para combatir su uso.

Abstract The continental margin off the southeastern Brazilian coast is punctuated by a series of geological-geomorphological features, such as subsurface saline diapirs and pockmarks at the seafloor interface, which evidence the abundant presence of oil and gas in the region. In several of these sites, hydrocarbons can be naturally released into the water column, areas are cold seep areas. These are marked by the presence of oil- and gas-dependent ecosystems, where specific organisms are able to fix carbon from hydrocarbon chemosynthesis. In addition, light hydrocarbon fluid flow through the sediment may build up authigenic carbonates that can be further colonized by cold-water corals, generating large carbonate mounds over geological time, normally positioned at the border of these pockmark features. The present work reports on a multidisciplinary oceanographic cruise carried out in the Santos Basin, SW Atlantic, to seek, map, and collect geological, chemical, and biological data from different deep-sea habitats. The cruise occurred in November 2019 on the R/V Alpha Crucis of the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo (IOUSP). We intended to discover and detail different geomorphological features, characterize free-living and symbiotic microorganisms, determine the chemosynthetic rates in relation to heterotrophic microbial production, and characterize the fauna and study their ecological and evolutionary links within and across ocean basins. All discoveries made during the cruise and their respective results will be presented separately in several papers that comprise this special volume.

Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é identificar os fatores associados aos custos das internações hospitalares por Condições Sensíveis à Atenção Primária (CSAP) no Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). Trata-se de um estudo transversal, analítico, com amostras aleatórias de hospitalizações no SUS, ao longo de dois anos. Foram avaliadas a distribuição dos custos e a duração de 414 internações segundo sexo, faixa etária e CSAP. O alto custo teve uma prevalência de 37,8% e esteve associado à idade superior a 40 anos, não casados, renda menor que 1,5 salários mínimos, internação superior a sete dias e internação na unidade de tratamento intensivo (UTI). O período médio das internações foi de 9,35 dias e o custo médio de R$ 3.606,09. A internação do jovem teve um custo/dia de R$ 207,08, enquanto os idosos tiveram um custo/dia de R$ 399,53. Os homens tiveram maior prevalência de internações e foram responsáveis pelo maior custo médio de internação. Foram prevalentes as doenças cardíacas, as pulmonares e as cerebrovasculares, sendo que as cardíacas foram responsáveis pelo maior custo de internação. Esses resultados apontam a urgente necessidade de fortalecimento da Atenção Primária à Saúde, com monitorização constante dessas doenças, visto que os recursos disponíveis deveriam ser suficientes para tratá-las, sem que haja a necessidade de internação hospitalar e gastos desnecessários.

Abstract The scope of this article is to identify the factors associated with the costs of hospital admissions for Conditions Sensitive to Primary Care (CSPC) in the Unified Health System (SUS). It involved a cross-sectional, analytical study with random samples of hospitalizations in the SUS over the period of two years. The distribution of costs and the duration of 414 hospitalizations were evaluated according to sex, age group and CSPC. The high cost had a prevalence of 37.8% and was associated with being over 40 years of age and unmarried, with an income below 1.5 minimum wages, hospitalization longer than 7 days and admission to the ICU. The average period of hospitalizations was 9.35 days, and the average cost was R$3,606.09. The hospitalization of youths had a cost/day of R$207.08, while for the elderly the cost/day was R$399.53. Men had a higher prevalence of hospitalizations and were responsible for the elevated average cost of hospitalization. Cardiac, pulmonary, and cerebrovascular diseases were prevalent, and cardiac diseases were responsible for the highest cost of hospitalization. These results point to the urgent need to bolster Primary Health Care, with constant monitoring of these diseases, thereby ensuring that available resources are sufficient to treat them, without the need for hospitalization and unnecessary expenses.
