Photosynthesis is one of the main plant metabolic processes affected by copper deficiency and toxicity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different copper concentrations on transient chlorophyll a fluorescence and modulated fluorescence in sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes were placed in a hydroponic system and grown for six days with a complete nutrient solution. The plants were then transferred to solutions with different copper concentrations (0.041, 0.082, 0.123 and 0.164 mM) for nine days. The solutions were renewed every three days, and the plants were evaluated at the end of the experiment. Increased copper availability (0.123 and 0.164 mM) positively influenced the structure and functionality of photosystem I (PSI). The increase in Cu availability also reduced the apparent electron transport rate in the PSII [ETR(II)], and the plants treated with 0.082 and 0.123 mM Cu were able to dissipate the excess light energy in the PSII and protect its units (NPQ and qN). A joint analysis of the data shows that high copper concentrations in the nutrient solution lead to reduced photochemical activity of the PSII, increased dissipation of light energy from this same photosystem and increased PSI efficiency in sweet potatoes.

The objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters involving yearling weight (Ps), carcass weight (Pc), hip height (Ag) and the scores of conformation (C), precocity (P) and musculature (M) and carcass yield (Rd) and finishing score (Ac) in Nellore cattle in order to define criteria for selection in this breed. The data of the 20 732 animals were obtained from Agropecuária Jacarezinho, SP. Data were analyzed by restricted maximum likelihood using animal model multi-trait analysis, which included fixed effects of contemporary groups (animals born at the same month and slaughtered on the same day) and the covariate age at slaughter (linear) for carcass traits, and contemporary groups (animals of the same farm, age, sex and management group at weaning and yearling) and yearling age (linear) for growth and as random, the additive effects and residual effects. Estimates ranged from 0.13 (Ac and Rd) to 0.36 (Ag) for heritability and from -0.59 ± 0.62 (Rd with Ac) to 0.71 ± 0.17 (Pc with C) for genetic correlations. Selection for Pc, C, P, M, Ag or Ps may be efficient because their heritability estimates are of magnitude moderate. Selection for Ps and C can favor heavier Pc, considering their positive and high genetic correlation.

Objetivou-se estimar parâmetros genéticos envolvendo o peso ao sobreano (Ps) e de carcaça (Pc), altura de garupa (Ag) e os escores de conformação (C), precocidade (P), musculatura (M), rendimento (Rd) e acabamento (Ac), em bovinos Nelore, com o intuito de definir critérios de seleção nesta raça. Os dados de 20 732 animais foram oriundos da Agropecuária Jacarezinho, SP. Análises foram realizadas pelo método da máxima verossimilhança restrita, em modelo animal multicaracterística, que incluiu os efeitos fixos de grupo de contemporâneos (animais nascidos no mesmo mês e mesmo dia de abate) e a covariável idade de abate para as características de carcaça, e grupo de contemporâneos (animais de mesma fazenda, ano e mês de nascimento, sexo, grupo de manejo à desmama e ao sobreano) e a covariável idade ao sobreano (linear) para as de crescimento e como aleatório, para ambas características, o efeito aditivo e o residual. As estimativas de herdabilidade variaram de 0,13 (Ac e Rd) a 0,36 (Ag) e as estimativas de correlação genética variaram de -0,59 ± 0,62 (entre Rd e Ac) a 0,71 ± 0,17 (entre Pc e C). As características Pc, C, P, M, Ag e Ps podem responder à seleção por apresentarem estimativas de herdabilidade de média magnitude. A seleção baseada em Ps em C deve promover resposta correlacionada para maiores Pc nos animais, uma vez que as correlações genéticas foram positivas e altas.

Avaliou-se, neste estudo, o potencial de três macrófitas - Azolla caroliniana, Salvinia minima e Lemna gibba - com vistas à seleção de plantas para remediação de ambientes contaminados por atrazine. Foram realizados experimentos em casa de vegetação durante seis dias, em vasos contendo solução nutritiva Hoagland (0,25 de força iônica), nas seguintes concentrações de atrazine: 0; 0,01; 0,1; 1,0; e 10,0 mg L-1. A redução da biomassa acumulada pelas macrófitas foi observada, bem como os efeitos de toxidez evidenciados pela sintomatologia desenvolvida nas plantas, os quais causaram sua morte. Clorose e necrose observadas nas plantas mostraram a alta sensibilidade das três espécies ao herbicida. As plantas demonstraram baixo potencial para remoção de atrazine, quando expostas ao herbicida em baixas doses. Entretanto, na concentração de 10,0 mg L-1 de atrazine, L. gibba e A. caroliniana mostraram potencial para remover o herbicida da solução (0,016 e 0,018 mg de atrazine por grama de massa fresca, respectivamente). Esse fato provavelmente resultou do processo de adsorção de atrazine pela matéria morta. A porcentagem de atrazine removida da solução pelas plantas diminuiu quando estas foram expostas a altas concentrações do poluente. Azolla caroliniana, S. minima e L. gibba não foram eficazes na remoção do herbicida na solução. A utilização dessas espécies para sanar ambientes aquáticos mostrou-se limitada.

The potential of three macrophytes, Azolla caroliniana, Salvinia minima, and Lemna gibba was assessed in this study to select plants for use in environmental remediation contaminated with atrazine. Experiments were carried out in a greenhouse over six days in pots containing Hoagland 0.25 strength nutritive solution at the following atrazine concentrations: 0; 0.01; 0.1; 1.0; 10.0 mg L-1. Decrease in biomass accumulation was observed in the three macrophytes, as well as toxic effects evidenced by the symptomatology developed by the plants which caused their deaths. The chlorosis and necrosis allowed to observe in the plants the high sensitivity of the three species to the herbicide. Plants presented low potential for removal of atrazine in solution when exposed to low concentrations of the herbicide. However, at the 10.0 mg L-1 atrazine concentration, L. gibba and A. caroliniana showed potential to remove the herbicide from the solution (0.016 and 0.018 mg atrazine per fresh mass gram, respectively). This fact likely resulted from the processes of atrazine adsorption by the dead material. The percentage of atrazine removed from the solution by the plants decreased when the plants were exposed to high concentrations of the pollutant. Azolla caroliniana, S. minima, and L. gibba were not effective in removing the herbicide from solution. The use of these species to remedy aquatic environments was shown to be limited.

Verificou-se a influência da movimentação de bovinos na configuração de uma estrutura do tipo centro-periferia. Foram aplicadas técnicas das redes sociais - modelo centro/periferia (C/P) contínuo - para inferir sobre a semelhança entre os padrões de movimentação registrados no estudo com uma estrutura C/P perfeita. Os resultados mostram alta correlação, e o poder discriminatório do algoritmo permite identificar a existência de uma estrutura tipo C/P. Este resultado perfila a metodologia proposta como uma ferramenta analítica nos processos de caracterização produtiva e a regionalização de medidas de intervenção sanitária. O trabalho considera a aplicação de conceitos intuitivos sobre a definição de estruturas C/P condizentes com os determinantes de circuitos pecuários

A degree in which bovine movement patterns configures a core-periphery structure was studied. Social networks analysis was used - a core-periphery (C/P) continuous model - estimating high correlation and an identification of a core with a discrimination power that outline this model as a tool for the characterization of livestock forms of production and regionalization of measures of sanitary intervention in animal health. This work considers an application of intuitive concepts about the definition of C/P structures that are according to the determinants of the livestock market circuits
