ABSTRACT Objectives: To verify the association between the ABO blood type and the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 disease severity. Methods: This review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), using the 2020 PRISMA Checklist and flow diagram, and articles selected for review were analyzed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Rating Scale. The research question was: "Would the ABO blood group influence the risk of infection and clinical course of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2?", The following databases were used: Embase, PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL), Web of Science, Science-Direct and Scopus. The protocol for this review was registered in the Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO), number CRD42021245945. Results: We found 798 articles across PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct and Virtual Health Library and 54 articles were included in the final analysis. Among 30 studies evaluating the risk of COVID-19 infection, 21 found significant correlations with ABO blood groups, 14 of them revealing an increased risk in blood group A and 15 studies showing a decreased risk in blood group O. Most studies found no significant correlation with disease severity or mortality. Conclusion: The qualitative assessment of available information suggests that blood group A may be a risk factor for COVID-19 infection and that blood group O may have a protective effect. We were unable to determine a clear association between the ABO blood group and mortality. These conclusions are based on highly heterogenous evidence.

Resumo A população em situação de rua cresce constantemente, sendo composta por uma grande diversidade de pessoas que estão diariamente expostas às diversas formas de violência, são privadas de direitos fundamentais, não possuem privacidade, têm condições precárias de sono, alimentação e higiene, a maioria faz uso abusivo de álcool e outras drogas. Objetivo: Interpretar como é desenvolvido o cuidado ofertado à população em situação de rua frente ao uso abusivo de álcool e outras drogas. Método: estudo qualitativo, realizado no período de outubro de 2021 a fevereiro de 2022, a partir de 20 entrevistas com profissionais de diferentes serviços da rede de atenção à saúde e de assistência e desenvolvimento social de um interior paulista, por meio da análise temática, utilizando-se da ferramenta NVivo. Resultados: foram identificados os temas: a situação de viver na rua favorece o uso de álcool e outras drogas; incipiente efetivação da Rede de Atenção Psicossocial (RAPS); incipiente efetivação da Política de Redução de Danos e Influência do terceiro setor no cuidado à PSR. Considerações Finais: Evidenciam-se limites para a promoção do cuidado na perspectiva da atenção psicossocial, sendo que para avançar é necessário dar voz e considerar as especificidades da PSR, compreender suas concepções do processo de saúde-doença e suas trajetórias.

Abstract The Homeless people is constantly growing, being made up of a wide range of people who are daily exposed to different forms of violence, are deprived of fundamental rights, lack privacy, have precarious conditions of sleep, food and hygiene. Objective: To understand/interpret how the care offered to the homeless population is developed in relation to the abusive use of alcohol and other drugs. Method: qualitative study, carried out from October 2021 to February 2022, based on 20 interviews with professionals from different services in the health care and assistance and social development network in an interior of São Paulo, through thematic analysis, using the NVivo tool. Results: the themes were identified: the situation of living on the street favors the use of alcohol and other drugs; care proposals centered on abstinence; hospitalization and medicalization weaken the continuity of care; incipient implementation of the Policy of Harm Reduction and Influence of the third sector in the care of PSR. Conclusions: Limits are evident for the promotion of care from the perspective of psychosocial care, and to advance it is necessary to give voice and consider the specificities of HP, understand its conceptions of the health-disease process and its trajectories.

Abstract This study evaluated color stability (CS), anti-adherence effect (AAE), and cell viability of microorganisms on acrylic resin (AR) surface, treated associated or not with sodium percarbonate (SP). AR specimens were prepared, and color analysis was performed before and after the treatments and the CS was calculated. For analysis of AAE, the samples were sterilized by radiation in a microwave oven. Then samples were randomly distributed: phosphate-buffered saline (PBS - control), 0.5% sodium hypochlorite (SH), phytosphingosine (PHS), and phytosphingosine + SP (PHS+Na2CO3). The specimens remained in contact with solutions for 30 minutes and were later contaminated by Candida albicans. Aliquots were seeded in Petri dishes with Sabouraud Dextrose agar and incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. After the incubation, the number of colonies was counted. The cell viability of adhered microorganisms on the AR was evaluated and 20 fields were observed under an epifluorescence microscope, and the percentage of adhered viable cells was calculated. Data were compared (One-way ANOVA, Tukey, p<.05). As for CS, PHS+ Na2CO3 (0.4±0.1) resulted in less change than PBS (0.9±0.2), similar to the other groups (SH [1.0±0.3)]; PHS [0.9±0.2)]). There was no difference for all tested solutions regarding the ability to avoid microorganism adherence (p>0.05), but PHS (11.2±4.1) resulted in a smaller area of adhered viable cells, statistically different from SH (18.2±7.6) and PBS (26.4±10.8). It was concluded that PHS resulted in lower adhered viable cells and when associated with Na2CO3, also shows a lower effect on the CS of AR.

Resumo Este estudo avaliou estabilidade de cor (EC), efeito antiaderente (EAA) e viabilidade celular de microrganismos em superfície de resina acrílica (RA), tratada com solução de fitoesfingosina, associada ou não ao percarbonato de sódio (PS). Espécimes RA foram preparados e análise de cor foi realizada antes e após os tratamentos e EC foi calculada. Para análise de EAA, as amostras foram esterilizadas por radiação em forno de micro-ondas. Então foram distribuídas aleatoriamente: solução salina tamponada com fosfato (PBS - controle), hipoclorito de sódio 0,5% (SH), fitoesfingosina (PHS) e fitoesfingosina + SP (PHS+Na2CO3). Os espécimes permaneceram em contato com as soluções por 30 minutos e posteriormente foram contaminados por Candida albicans. Alíquotas foram semeadas em placas de Petri com ágar Sabouraud Dextrose e incubadas a 37°C por 24 horas. Após a incubação, o número de colônias foi contado. A viabilidade celular dos microorganismos aderidos na RA foi avaliada e 20 campos foram observados em microscópio de epifluorescência, e a porcentagem de células viáveis aderidas foi calculada. Os dados foram comparados (One-way ANOVA, Tukey, p<0,05). Quanto a EC, o PHS+ Na2CO3 [0,4 (0,1)] resultou em menor alteração que o PBS [0,9 (0,2)], semelhante aos demais grupos (SH [1,0 (0,3)]; PHS [0,9 (0,2)]). Não houve diferença para todas as soluções testadas quanto à capacidade de evitar a aderência de microorganismos (p>0,05), mas o PHS [11,2 (4,1)] resultou em uma área menor de células viáveis aderidas, estatisticamente diferente do SH [18,2 (7,6)] e PBS [26,4 (10,8)]. Concluiu-se que o PHS resultou em menor número de células viáveis aderidas e, quando associado ao Na2CO3, também apresenta menor efeito sobre o EC da RA.

Abstract Radiopaque properties in the infiltrant should be interesting for clinicians to feel more confident to indicate this treatment. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the incorporation of barium and ytterbium particles on the physical properties of resin infiltrants. Groups were divided according to the addition of ytterbium oxide (Y) alone (30 or 40%) or Y with barium (YB) (15/15% or 20/20% respectively) in the Icon commercial infiltrant and in the experimental infiltrant base. Digital radiography (n=5), Microradiography (n=5), Microtomography (n=3), degree of conversion (n=5), water sorption (n=16), solubility (n=16), contact angle (n=16), flexural strength (n=16), elastic modulus (n=16) and Energy dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (n=10) were performed. Analyses were performed using the R program, with a significance level of 5%, and microradiography and Microtomography analyses were evaluated qualitatively. In groups with 30 or 40% of ytterbium, radiopacity was higher or equal to enamel. Microradiography and Microtomography appear to have more radiopacity in groups with 40% (Y). Among the groups with no particle addition, those of the experimental infiltrant presented a higher degree of conversion than those of Icon®. In most groups, there was solubility below the ISO-recommended levels. The addition of particles resulted in higher viscosity. Groups with Icon had higher flexural strength and elastic modulus than groups with experimental infiltrant. The addition of 40% (Y) improved polymerization, had low solubility, and had greater radiopacity than enamel, however negatively affected the viscosity increasing then. Experimental groups with the base showed a higher water sorption than Icon groups.

Resumo O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o efeito da incorporação de partículas de Bário e Itérbio nas propriedades físicas de infiltrantes resinosos. Os grupos foram divididos de acordo com a adição de Itérbio puro (30 ou 40%) ou Itérbio com Bário (15/15% ou 20/20% respectivamente) no infiltrante comercial Icon e no Infiltrante experimental base. Foram realizados os testes de: radiografia digital (n=5), microradiografia Transversa (n=5), microtomografia (n=3), grau de conversão (n=5), sorção (n=16), solubilidade (n=16), ângulo de contato (n=16), resistência flexural (n=16), modulo de elasticidade (n=16) e Espectroscopia por energia dispersiva (n=10). As análises foram realizadas utilizando o programa R, com nível de significância de 5%, e os testes de microradiografia e microtomografia foram analisados qualitativamente. Nos grupos com 30 ou 40% de Itérbio, a radiopacidade foi maior ou igual ao esmalte dentário. Na microradiografia e microtomografia parece ter maior radiopacidade nos grupos com 40% de itérbio. Dentre os grupos sem adição de partículas, os do infiltrante experimental apresentaram maior grau de conversão do que os do Icon e o grupo controle experimental e com 40% de itérbio apresentaram os melhores resultados. Na maioria dos grupos, a solubilidade foi abaixo dos níveis recomendados pela ISO. A adição de particulas resultou em maior viscosidade. Os grupos com Icon apresentaram maior resistência flexural e modulo de elasticidade do que os grupos com infiltrante experimental e a quantidade de partícula aumentou a resistência e o módulo de elasticidade. A adição de 40% de itérbio melhorou a polimerização, apresentou baixa solubilidade e maior radiopacidade do que o esmalte, porém afetou negativamente a viscosidade, aumentando-a.

Abstract Introduction: low 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels occur after kidney transplantation (KTx), and can be associated with increase the risk of graft loss. This longitudinal study aimed to evaluate the vitamin D status and association with biomarkers of the renal graft function after KTx. Methods: this longitudinal study included 42 patients evaluated at baseline, 3 and 6 months after KTx. Biodemographic, clinical, and biochemical parameters such as 25(OH)D and parathyroid hormone (PTH), and biomarkers of renal graft function, such as creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR), were assessed. Sun exposure was also evaluated. Patients were categorized according to their 25(OH)D levels. Results: at baseline, 25(OH)D levels < 30 ng/mL were found in 43 % patients, and 38 % of these patients failed to improve their 25(OH)D levels by 6 months after KTx. Low 25(OH)D levels occurred regardless of sun exposure. Further, 44 % patients developed albuminuria at 6 months. An increased ACR was observed in patients with 25(OH)D levels < 30 ng/mL (p = 0.002) compared to that in patients with 25(OH)D > 30 ng/mL. Additionally, 25(OH)D levels were negatively correlated with ACR at 6 months post-KTx (r = -0.444; p = 0.003). Twelve (28.6 %) patients with 25(OH)D levels < 30 ng/mL showed no eGFR recovery until 6 months after KTx. Conclusion: low vitamin D levels and increased albuminuria were observed at 6 months after KTx, even in a region with high sun exposure. The association between vitamin D status and biomarkers of renal graft function after KTx should be explored in further studies.

Resumen Introducción: los bajos niveles de 25-hidroxivitamina D [25(OH)D] ocurren después del procedimiento de trasplante de riñón (KTx) y pueden estar asociados con un aumento del riesgo de pérdida del injerto. Este estudio longitudinal tuvo como objetivo evaluar el estado de la vitamina D y la asociación con los biomarcadores de función del injerto renal después del KTx. Métodos: este estudio longitudinal incluyó a 42 pacientes que fueron evaluados al inicio del estudio, y 3 y 6 meses después del KTx. Se evaluaron los parámetros biodemográficos, clínicos y bioquímicos, como 25(OH)D y hormona paratiroidea (PTH), y los biomarcadores de función del injerto renal, como creatinina, tasa de filtración glomerular estimada (eGFR) y relación albúmina/creatinina (ACR). También se evaluó la exposición al sol. Los pacientes se clasificaron según sus niveles de 25(OH)D. Resultados: al inicio del estudio se encontraron niveles de 25(OH)D < 30 ng/ml en el 43 % de los pacientes, mientras que el 38 % de estos pacientes no lograron mejorar sus niveles de 25(OH)D a los 6 meses después del KTx. También se produjeron niveles bajos de 25(OH)D independientemente de la exposición al sol. Asimismo, el 44 % de los pacientes desarrollaron albuminuria a los 6 meses. Se observó un aumento de la ACR en los pacientes con niveles de 25(OH)D < 30 ng/mL (p = 0,002) en comparación con los pacientes con 25(OH)D > 30 ng/mL. Además, los niveles de 25(OH)D se correlacionaron negativamente con la ACR a los 6 meses después del KTx (r = -0,444; p = 0,003). Doce (28,6 %) pacientes con niveles de 25(OH)D < 30 ng/ml no mostraron recuperación de la TFGe hasta 6 meses después del KTx. Conclusión: se observaron niveles bajos de vitamina D y un aumento de la albuminuria a los 6 meses después del KTx, incluso en una región con alta exposición solar. La asociación entre el estado de la vitamina D y los biomarcadores de función del injerto renal después del KTx debe explorarse en estudios adicionales.

RESUMO: A interação genótipo x ambiente representa um grande desafio na identificação e seleção de genótipos responsivos às diversas condições de clima e solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar e selecionar pré-cultivares de feijão carioca e feijão carioca precoce com base na adaptabilidade, estabilidade e produtividade de grãos. Na safra 2014 foram conduzidos dois ensaios regionais de competição no estado de Pernambuco: feijão carioca (14 genótipos em Arcoverde, Belém de São Francisco, Caruaru e São João) e feijão carioca precoce (11 genótipos em Araripina, Arcoverde e Caruaru) e na safra de 2015 com feijão carioca precoce (11 genótipos, em Araripina, Arcoverde e Brejão). Os parâmetros foram estimados por meio de modelos mistos e a seleção foi realizada pelo método da Média Harmônica do Desempenho Relativo dos Valores Genéticos (MHPRVG), adotando-se três estratégias: i) seleção com base no valor genético predito, sem interação; ii) seleção com base no valor genético predito, considerando cada local; iii) seleção simultânea quanto à produtividade de grãos, adaptabilidade e estabilidade. Observou-se que os ambientes influenciaram na expressão fenotípica dos genótipos de feijão carioca e carioca precoce, configurando adaptação específica. Os genótipos BRS Notável, BRS Estilo e BRS Pérola, de feijão carioca, e CNFC 15875, BRS Notável e CNFC 15630, de feijão carioca precoce, apresentaram os melhores desempenhos nos ambientes testados, considerando-se, simultaneamente, a adaptabilidade a diferentes condições edafoclimáticas, estabilidade de desempenho e produtividade de grãos.

ABSTRACT: Genotype x environment interactions represent a major challenge in identifying and selecting genotypes responsive to different climate and soil conditions. This research evaluated and selected pre-cultivars of carioca bean and early carioca bean based on adaptability, stability, and grain yield. In the 2014 crop season, two regional competition trials were conducted in the state of Pernambuco: carioca beans (14 genotypes in Arcoverde, Belém de São Francisco, Caruaru and São João) and early carioca beans (11 genotypes in Araripina, Arcoverde, and Caruaru) and, in the 2015 crop season, with early carioca beans (11 genotypes in Araripina, Arcoverde, and Brejão). Parameters were estimated by mixed models, and the selection was performed using the Harmonic Mean of Relative Performance of Genetic Values (HMRPGV) method following three strategies: i) selection based on predicted genetic value with no interaction; ii) selection according to predicted genetic value considering each location; and iii) simultaneous selection for grain yield, adaptability, and stability. The environments influenced the phenotypic expression of the carioca and early carioca bean genotypes, representing a specific adaptation. The genotypes BRS Notável, BRS Estilo and BRS Pérola, of carioca beans, and CNFC 15875, BRS Notável and CNFC 15630, of early carioca beans, had the best results in the environments tested, regarding, simultaneously, adaptability to different soil and climate conditions, performance stability, and grain yield.

ABSTRACT Toxoplasmosis is an infection of vast worldwide distribution whose etiologic agent is Toxoplasma gondii. This disease can cause problems ranging from mild symptoms to serious conditions, such as encephalitis, miscarriage and blindness. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to perform a diagnosis with reproducible techniques in order to obtain a good prognosis. The aim of this review was to analyze the efficiency of toxoplasmosis diagnostic techniques based on sensitivity and specificity results. Five research platforms in English language were used (Eric, Elsevier, Google Scholar, PubMed and SciELO), which contained data on the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis. The search and selection were performed for studies published prior to June 2021. The search resulted in the inclusion of 13 articles published from 2005 to 2020. The data revealed the use of different samples in the standardization of techniques such as serum, total blood, colostrum and amniotic fluid. The flow cytometry, lateral flow immunoassay and qPCR techniques showed 100% sensitivity, whereas the ELISA, western blotting, qPCR and RE-LAMP techniques achieved 100% specificity. Significantly, the qPCR and LAMP techniques were more accurate when the likelihood ratio was assessed. The meta-analysis identified that ISAGA and western blotting have low sensitivity values and LIASON, ELFA and ELISA, using a silica bioconjugate, also have low specificity values. It was noted that a wide range of methods have high values of sensitivity and specificity. Therefore, the choice of the method will be based on the conditions and its financial viability.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has adversely affected the health of the global population, with sleep quality being one of the affected parameters. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate sleep quality and its associated factors in adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. DESIGN AND SETTING: A population-based cross-sectional serological survey of 1,762 adults in the Iron Quadrangle region of Brazil. METHODS: The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess sleep quality. Sociodemographic variables, health conditions, health-related behaviors, anxiety, vitamin D levels, weight gain/loss, and pandemic characteristics were assessed using a structured questionnaire. Univariate and multivariate analyses using Poisson regression with robust variance were performed to identify factors associated with sleep quality. RESULTS: More than half of the participants reported poor sleep quality (52.5%). Multivariate analysis revealed that the factors associated with poor sleep quality included living alone (prevalence ratio [PR] = 1.34; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04–1.73), anxiety disorder (PR = 1.32; 95% CI: 1.08–1.62), 5.0% weight loss (PR = 1.21; 95% CI: 1.02–1.44), 5.0% weight gain (PR = 1.27; 95% CI: 1.03–1.55), vitamin D deficiency (PR = 1.16; 95% CI: 1.01–1.35), and COVID-19 symptoms (PR = 1.29; 95% CI: 1.10–1.52). CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed that more than half of the participants experienced poor sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic. Factors associated with poor sleep quality included vitamin D deficiency and weight changes related to the pandemic.

ABSTRACT: The study aimed to evaluate possible factors associated with retention and dropout at the Pharmacy degree of a public university in the Brazilian Northeast. This cross-sectional study was conducted between July and December 2019 with students of two Pharmacy undergraduate degrees at the Federal University of Sergipe. To collect data, we used an instrument that included: 1) socio-demographic data and 2) factors related to dropout intentions, questions about leave of absence, and failure in modules/disciplines. Three hundred thirty-five students participated, 132 from the Lagarto campus and 203 from São Cristóvão. Out of those, 69.30% (n = 232) were women, the majority (81.20%) between 18 and 24 years old, 60.90% (n = 204) declared themselves mixed race, 96.70% were single, and 5.10% (n = 17) had children. Regarding failure and intention to drop out, 176 (52.50%) stated that they had already failed, and 62.10% (n = 208) intended to drop out of the course. Among the factors that lead to dropout intentions are: “schedule of the disciplines offered,” “curriculum matrix,” “teaching methodology,” “form of evaluation,” “relationship between student and teacher/coordinator,” “interpersonal relationships,” “student assistance,” “low remuneration of the professional,” “financial difficulties,” “lack of study skills,” “difficulties of adaptation to the university,” “discontent or demotivation with the course,” “learning difficulties, translated into disapproval and low frequency,” “non-adaptation to the course,” and “mental health problem.” The results reinforce the need for strategies that support students during undergraduate studies to reduce the impact of retention and dropout in higher education.

RESUMEN: El estudio tenía como objetivo evaluar posibles factores asociados a la retención e intencionalidad de la evasión del curso de Farmacia de una Universidad Pública del Noreste brasileño. Estudio transversal realizado entre julio y diciembre de 2019, con estudiantes de los dos cursos de Farmacia de la Universidad Federal de Sergipe. Se recopilaron los siguientes datos: 1) datos sociodemográficos; 2) Factores relacionados con la intencionalidad de la evasión, preguntas sobre bloqueo y retención en módulos/disciplinas. Participaron del estudio 335 estudiantes, 132 del campus de Lagarto y 203 de São Cristóvão. De ellos, 69,30% (n=232) eran mujeres, la mayoría (81,20%) entre 18 y 24 años, 60,90% (n=204) se declararon pardas, 96,70% eran solteras y 5,10% (n=17) tenían hijos. Sobre la retención y la intencionalidad de la evasión, 176 (52,50%) afirmaron que ya habían reprobado y 62,10% (n=208) tenían la intención de evasión. Se destacaron los siguientes factores de intencionalidad de la evasión: "programa de las disciplinas ofrecidas", "matriz curricular", "metodología de enseñanza", "forma de evaluación", "relación entre estudiante y profesor/coordinador", "relaciones interpersonales", "asistencia al estudiante", “baja remuneración del profesional", "dificultades financieras", "falta de habilidades de estudio", "dificultades de adaptación a la universidad", "desencanto o desmotivación con el curso", "dificultades de aprendizaje, traducidas en desaprobación y baja frecuencia", "inadaptación con el curso" y "problema de salud mental". Los resultados refuerzan la necesidad de estrategias que apoyen a los estudiantes durante la graduación, con el fin de reducir el impacto en la retención escolar y la deserción escolar en la educación superior.

RESUMO: O estudo objetivou avaliar possíveis fatores associados à retenção e à intencionalidade de evasão do curso de Farmácia de uma universidade pública do Nordeste. Trata-se de um estudo transversal realizado entre julho e dezembro de 2019 com estudantes dos dois cursos de graduação em Farmácia, da Universidade Federal de Sergipe. Para coleta de dados, utilizou-se um instrumento que contemplava: 1) Dados Sociodemográficos; e 2) Fatores ligados à intencionalidade de evasão, questões sobre trancamento e reprovação em módulos/disciplinas. Participaram da pesquisa 335 estudantes, sendo 132 do Campus Lagarto e 203 estudantes de São Cristóvão. Desses, 69,30% (n=232) eram mulheres; a maioria (81,20%) apresentou idade entre 18 e 24 anos; 60,90% (n=204) se autodeclaram pardos; 96,70% eram solteiros; e 5,10% (n= 17) possuíam filhos. Quanto à reprovação e intencionalidade de evasão, 176 (52,50%) afirmaram já terem reprovado, e 62,10% (n=208) apresentaram a intenção de desistir do curso. Entre os fatores que apresentam impacto na intencionalidade da evasão, destacaram-se: “horário das disciplinas ofertadas”, “matriz curricular”, “metodologia de ensino”, “forma de avaliação”, “relação entre aluno e professor/coordenador”, “relações interpessoais”, “assistência aos alunos”, “baixa remuneração do profissional”, “dificuldades financeiras”, “falta de habilidades de estudo”, “dificuldades de adaptação à universidade”, “desencanto ou desmotivação com o curso”, “dificuldades de aprendizagem, traduzidas em reprovação e baixa frequência”, “inadaptação com o curso” e “problema de saúde mental”. Os resultados reforçam a necessidade de estratégias que subsidiem os estudantes durante a graduação, a fim de reduzir o impacto das variáveis identificadas na retenção e na evasão escolar no Ensino Superior.

ABSTRACT Variation in rainfall affects crops; therefore, agricultural practices become essential for forage production in semi-arid regions. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different agricultural practices on phyllochron, structural characteristics of forage cactus and millet, and their relations with crop yield using the principal component analysis (PCA). The design was in randomized blocks, with six treatments: sole cropped cactus without straw mulching, sole cropped cactus with straw mulching, sole cropped millet without straw mulching, sole cropped millet with straw mulching, and cactus intercropping with millet, with and without straw mulching, each with four replicates. There were three cactus cycles and nine millet cycles (three cycles of cultivars BRS1501 and six of IPA Bulk-1-BF). Biometric parameters were evaluated monthly, while yield was determined after the crop harvest. Phyllochron was determined with the regression analysis. The PCA was applied to structural characteristics and yield. The systems adopted did not influence the structural characteristics of cactus and millet ( p > 0.05), except for cladode thickness, which increased with straw mulching. Phyllochron of the millet reduced when the crop was intercropped. The structural characteristics of cladode length, width, and thickness influenced crop yield, mainly in systems with straw mulching. Straw mulching and intercropping alter phyllochron of cactus and millet. The adoption of straw mulching has a more significant relationship with cactus yield, whereas biometric variables influence crop yield for millet, not the cropping system.

ABSTRACT Background: The World Health Organization recommends a market-ready, urine-based point-of-care diagnostic test for circulating cathodic antigens (CCA) to determine the prevalence of S. mansoni. This study evaluated the performance of the URINE CCA (SCHISTO) ECO TESTE® (POC-ECO), which is currently available in Brazil. Methods: Residents from eight sites with different prevalence estimates provided one urine sample for POC-ECO and one stool sample for Kato-Katz (KK) and Helmintex® (HTX) testing as an egg-detecting reference for infection status. Results: None of the study sites had significantly higher POC-ECO accuracy than KK. Conclusions: POC-ECO is not currently recommended in Brazilian schistosomiasis elimination programs.

Abstract This study evaluated the bioactive potential of a macro-porous chitosan scaffold incorporated with calcium hydroxide (CH-Ca) and functionalized with bioactive doses of simvastatin (SV) for bone tissue regeneration. Initially, the bioactive dose of SV in osteoblastic cells (SAOS-2) was determined. For the direct contact experiment, SAOS-2 cells were plated on scaffolds to assess cell viability and osteogenic differentiation. The second assay was performed at a distance using extracts from scaffolds incubated in culture medium to assess the effect of conditioned medium on viability and osteogenic differentiation. The initial screening showed that 1 μM SV presented the best biostimulating effects, and this dose was selected for incorporation into the CH-Ca and pure chitosan (CH) scaffolds. The cells remained viable throughout the direct contact experiment, with the greatest cell density in the CH-Ca and CH-Ca-SV scaffolds because of their higher porosity. The CH-Ca-SV scaffold showed the most intense bio-stimulating effect in assays in the presence and absence of osteogenic medium, leading to an increased deposition of mineralized matrix. There was an increase in the viability of cells exposed to the extracts for CH-Ca, CH-SV, and CH-Ca-SV during the one-day period. There was an increase in ALP activity in the CH-Ca and CH-Ca-SV; however, the CH-Ca-SV scaffold resulted in an intense increase in the deposition of mineralized nodules, approximately 56.4% at 7 days and 117% at 14 days, compared with CH (control). In conclusion, functionalization of the CH-Ca scaffold with SV promoted an increase in bioactivity, presenting a promising option for bone tissue regeneration.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the changes caused by cooking presoaked aged carioca beans in the autoclave steam, focusing on its bioactive components, antioxidant activity, and nutritional compounds. Additionally, to identify which carioca bean cultivar could preserve the most quantity of bioactive compounds in cooked flour. The cooked flours from Imperador had the highest antioxidant activity (DDPH: 10.58 µmolTrolox·g-1, ABTS: 18.71 µmolTrolox·g-1), anthocyanins (8.08 µg·g-1), and total phenolic content (TPC) (36.69 mg·g-1). The cultivar Gol also retained part of these compounds after cooking. The phenolic and saponin profiles of cooked flours revealed a reduction in phenolic compounds such as catechin, epicatechin, and kaempferol and an increase in soyasaponin-Ba and Bb. The samples Notavel, Dama, and Madreperola, presented the highest amount of soyasaponin-A0. Thus, the cooked flours from Imperador and Gol stood out due to their retention of part of their bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols and group B saponins.

RESUMO: Este estudo avalia as alterações causadas pelo cozimento do feijão carioca, envelhecido e pré-embebido, no vapor da autoclave, com foco em seus componentes bioativos, atividade antioxidante e compostos nutricionais. Além disso, identifica qual cultivar de feijão carioca preserva a maior quantidade de compostos bioativos na farinha de feijão cozida. As farinhas cozidas do Imperador apresentaram a maior atividade antioxidante (DDPH: 10.58 µmolTrolox·g-1, ABTS: 18.71 µmolTrolox·g-1), antocianinas (8.08 µg·g-1) e fenólicos totais (TPC) (36.69 mg·g-1). A cultivar Gol também reteve parte desses compostos após o cozimento. Os perfis fenólicos e saponínicos das farinhas cozidas revelaram redução de compostos fenólicos, como a catequina, epi-catequina e kaempferol e aumento de soyasaponin-Ba e Bb. As amostras Notável, Dama e Madrepérola, apresentaram a maior quantidade de sojasaponina-A0. Assim, as farinhas cozidas do Imperador e Gol se destacaram pela retenção de parte de seus compostos bioativos, como polifenóis e saponinas do grupo B.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated forage-free diets supplemented with sodium bicarbonate (SB) based on ground flint corn on intake, apparent nutrient digestibility, ruminal parameters, and N balance. Four rumen-cannulatedDorper × Santa Inês lambs, with a body weight of 43.4 ± 0.85 kg (mean ± standard deviation) were used. The experimental design was a 4×4 Latin square. Each experimental period lasted 21 days. Experimental diets were: positive control, a diet without SB containing 400 g/kg DM of soybean hulls (CONT), and three diets based on ground flint corn, containing 10 (10SB), 20 (20SB) or 30 (30SB) g/kg DM of SB. Intake of neutral and acid detergent fiber was greater for CONT (P < 0.01) when compared to SB. Intake and apparent nutrient digestibility of dry and organic matter, ether extract, and crude protein did not differ. Intake (P = 0.01) and digestibility (P < 0.01) of non-fiber carbohydrates were greater for SB diets and neutral detergent fiber digestibility was greater (P = 0.03) for CONT. The total digestible nutrients and metabolizable energy were greater for SB (P = 0.04). Rumen concentrations of acetate (P < 0.01), isobutyrate (P < 0.01), butyrate (P < 0.01), isovalerate (P < 0.01), and total short-chain fatty acids (P < 0.01) were greater for CONT. Ruminal pH showed a quadratic (P = 0.05) response to SB levels, with greater values for 20SB. Sodium bicarbonate was efficient in increasing ruminal pH at the level of 20 g/kg DM without interfering with the intake and apparent nutrient digestibility characteristics.

RESUMO: O presente estudo avaliou a suplementação de bicarbonato de sódio (BS) em dietas sem forragem à base de milho moído sobre o consumo e a digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes, os parâmetros ruminais e o balanço de N. Foram utilizados quatro cordeiros Dorper × Santa Inês, com um peso corporal inicial de 43,4 ± 0,85 kg (média ± desvio padrão). O delineamento experimental foi quadrado latino 4×4. Cada período experimental durou 21 dias. As dietas experimentais foram: controle positivo, sem BS, contendo 400 g/kg de MS de casca de soja (CONT) e três dietas à base de milho moído, sem casca de soja, contendo 10 (10BS), 20 (20BS) ou 30 (30BS) g/kg de MS de BS. O consumo de fibra em detergente neutro e ácido foi maior (P < 0,01)para o CONT quando comparado com BS. O consumo e a digestibilidade aparente da matéria seca, matéria orgânica, extrato etéreo e proteína bruta não diferiram entre os tratamentos. O consumo (P = 0,01) e digestibilidade (P < 0,01) dos carboidratos não fibrosos foram superiores para as dietas contendo BS e a digestibilidade da fibra em detergente neutro foi maior para o CONT. Os teores de nutrientes digestivos totais e energia metabolizável foram superiores para as dietas contendo BS (P = 0,04). A concentração ruminal de acetato (P < 0,01), isobutirato (P < 0,01), butirato (P < 0,01), isovalerato (P < 0,01) e ácidos graxos totais de cadeia curta (P < 0,01) foram mais elevadas para o CONT. O pHruminal apresentou resposta quadrática (P = 0,05) em relação aos níveis de BS, sendo observado maior pH para os animais alimentados com a dieta 20BS. O BS foi eficiente em aumentar o pHruminal no teor de 20 g/kg MS sem interferir no consumo e na digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes.
