Durante o início da década de 1620, a Inglaterra enfrentou um período de intensas dificuldades econômicas que despertou o interesse de muitos pela reflexão acerca dos fenômenos em curso. A década testemunhou o surgimento das mais relevantes obras econômicas do início do período Stuart; porém, o debate não esteve restrito às confrontações abstratas dos autores especializados. A questão fundamental em disputa nas controvérsias entre Malynes, Misselden e Mun - como integrar a moeda e o comércio internacional em uma explicação coerente dos fenômenos econômicos - foi também objeto de muita atenção na esfera pública, em sentido amplo. A Sessão Parlamentar de 1621, em particular, colocou em evidência não apenas a relevância fundamental do tema para a compreensão dos problemas econômicos da Inglaterra, mas também a enorme complexidade envolvida em sua investigação. Ao reunir todos esses elementos, o artigo busca articular um retrato mais denso a respeito do estado corrente das ideias econômicas na Inglaterra do início do século XVII.

During the early 1620's, England went through a period of intense economic disorders which sparked the interest of many in economic reasoning. The decade witnessed the emergence of the most relevant pieces of economic literature of the early Stuart era, but the debate was not restricted to the abstract confrontation of economic writers. The fundamental issue at stake in the controversies between Malynes, Misselden, and Mun - the integration of money and international trade in a coherent explanation of economic phenomena - was also the subject of much care in the public sphere at large. The parliamentary session of 1621, in particular, put in evidence not only the fundamental relevance of the matter for understanding England's economic maladies, but also the great difficulties involved in its investigation. By bringing all these elements together, this paper seeks to articulate a more dense and meaningful portrait of the prevailing state of economic ideas in early 17th century England.

Nossa avaliação de sistemas teóricos do passado é frequentemente prejudicada pela identificação tácita entre as categorias conceituais de ontem e hoje, problema que se agrava ao tratarmos de ideias que antecedem a plena consolidação de uma disciplina. O estudo da doutrina mercantilista costuma ser contaminado por tais dificuldades. Neste trabalho, oferecemos uma nova perspectiva acerca das ideias dos economistas britânicos do início do século 17, avaliando-as à luz do contexto intelectual que lhes é próprio. Este período caracteriza-se por uma leitura da realidade econômica em que a moeda desempenha papel fundamental. Autores como Malynes, Misselden e Mun acreditavam que a administração adequada da moeda viabilizaria o bom funcionamento do comércio internacional e dinamizaria a atividade econômica interna, garantindo a prosperidade nacional. Ao compreender esta base analítica comum, podemos entrever a origem das intensas divergências entre os autores, determinantes dos rumos da discussão teórica subsequente.

When evaluating theoretical systems of the past, one is frequently misled by tacitly identifying yesterday's theoretical concepts with those currently prevailing, a problem made more serious when dealing with ideas which predate the full consolidation of a discipline. Studies of mercantilistic doctrine use to be tainted by such difficulties. In the present article, we offer a new perspective regarding the ideas of seventeenth-century British economic authors, evaluating them in light of their proper intellectual context. We argue that the period is characterized by an understanding of the economic realm in which money plays a central role. Authors such as Malynes, Misselden and Mun have believed that a proper money management could assure a well-functioning international trade and dynamize domestic economic activity, guaranteeing national prosperity. Comprehending this shared analytical base, we can grasp the origins of the intense divergences among those authors, which would determine the path of subsequent theoretical debate.

Starting from Evangelista Torricelli's pneumatic discoveries, we try to show that the crucial discoveries in pure science associated with the Scientific Revolution, although they may not have found immediate practical applications, have markedly impelled technological progress in the medium term - contrary to the diffused notion which states that the links between science and technology during the modern period have been tenuous, at best. Torricelli's ideas have turned into one of the privileged research areas for then newborn experimental program, actively participating in a process of reformulation in scientific research's epistemological base, which have culminated in steam power productive application.

Utilizando a inexplorada herança documental de duas unidades fiscais da província de São Paulo, o registro de Rio Negro e a barreira de Itapetininga, este trabalho analisa a estrutura do sistema de comercialização de animais de carga - muares e cavalares - estabelecido entre as regiões sul e centro-sul do Brasil imperial. A análise cobre o período 1830-1869 e abrange diversos aspectos. Inicialmente, apresentamos as séries de volumes negociados compiladas, colocando-as em perspectiva com outras evidências estatísticas disponíveis. Passamos, então, a nos ocupar com a estrutura das tropas negociadas e com a distribuição de sua propriedade, atentando para a participação relativa de cada espécie de animal e para os níveis de concentração presentes no negócio. Finalmente, analisamos de forma sucinta os padrões de distribuição espacial das atividades relacionadas ao comércio de tropas, assim como as inter-relações entre os partícipes e as diversas possibilidades de inserção associadas a este complexo sistema de abastecimento.

Using the unexplored documental inheritage from two of São Paulo’s province tax outposts, Rio Negro and Itapetininga, this work analyses the structure of the commercializing system for cargo animals - mules and horses - established between imperial Brazil’s southern and south-central regions. The analysis covers the period from 1830 to 1869 and captures several aspects. Initially, we present the statistical series compiled with respect to negotiated volumes, putting them in perspective with other available statistical evidences. We then proceed by studying the negotiated herds’ structure and their property distribution, carefully examining the share of both animal species in the whole market and the concentration levels verified in the business. Finally, we briefly examine the patterns of spatial distribution for the business correlated activities, as well as the interrelations among participants and the different possible ways of integration in this complex system.
