A existência de uma relação entre cobertura florestal e provisão de água é foco de estudos há décadas, especialmente no que diz respeito às funções eco-hidrológicas da vegetação situada em diferentes posições do relevo. Neste artigo, fazemos uma síntese da literatura sobre essas funções e analisamos como as mudanças recentes no Código Florestal Brasileiro podem afetar essas relações. Mostramos que a posição no relevo da vegetação nativa altera as funções eco-hidrológicas que elas exercem, sendo mais voltadas para a recarga de aquíferos, ou para a redução do escoamento superficial e contenção de processos erosivos, ou para a proteção de corpos d'água, ou ainda como elementos auxiliares em todas essas funções. Assim, é necessário haver cobertura vegetal em cada posição do relevo, para garantir a provisão das funções eco-hidrológicas no conjunto de uma bacia. O novo Código Florestal, ao promover uma redução da proteção da vegetação em todas as posições do relevo, deverá reduzir a capacidade de provisão de água em qualidade e regularidade compatíveis com as demandas futuras. Para reverter essa situação, é necessário estabelecer novas políticas públicas que promovam a manutenção ou a restauração da vegetação natural em todas as posições do relevo.

The relationship between forest cover and water supply has been studied for decades, especially in regard to the ecohydrological functions provided by native vegetation. In this study, we present a literature synthesis of the different ecohydrological functions provided by the forests and how the provision of these functions may be affected by recent changes in the Brazilian Forest Code. Depending on the location in the watershed, the functions provided by the forests can be more associated to aquifer recharge, to the reduction of runoff and erosion, to the protection of water bodies, or complementing all these functions. Thus, forest cover is needed in different regions of the watersheds to ensure the provision of all ecohydrological functions. The new Brazilian Forest Code reduced the legal protection of vegetation in all the different regions of the watersheds, and may reduce provision of water resources in adequate quality and regularity needed to supply future demands. To mitigate this situation, it is necessary to establish new public policies to maintain or restore native vegetation in different regions of the watersheds.

A serapilheira constitui um importante compartimento florestal, principal responsável pela ciclagem dos nutrientes. Diversos fatores podem afetar a produção de serapilheira, sendo os climáticos e a estrutura da vegetação os mais comumente investigados. Também a estrutura da paisagem pode influir nos padrões de produção da serapilheira, abordagem ainda muito pouco explorada. Este estudo objetivou avaliar efeitos de borda e de tamanho na produção de serapilheira em três fragmentos de Floresta Atlântica de Planalto (Ibiúna, SP: 23°35' S - 23°50' S; 46°45' W - 47°15' W), um grande (aproximadamente 175 ha) e dois pequenos (aproximadamente 5 ha), com diferentes graus de isolamento. A serapilheira coletada foi separada em frações, conforme os órgãos vegetais predominantes, e em dois períodos, conforme maior ou menor produção. Foram utilizadas análises de variância e testes a posteriori para detectar diferenças na produção de serapilheira entre borda e interior de cada fragmento, e entre os interiores dos três fragmentos analisados. A maior biomassa foi de "folhas+flores", seguida de "caules < 0,5 cm" (62,9% e 24,7% do total), padrão comum em florestas tropicais. Houve indicação de efeito de borda quanto à produção de serapilheira nos três fragmentos, especialmente no maior, com maior produção de material nos seus interiores. Os padrões verificados se relacionam fortemente a características da estrutura da floresta, como porte das árvores e desenvolvimento do dossel. A maior produção de "frutos+sementes" no fragmento grande e no pequeno conectado apontou para uma relação entre conectividade das manchas de mata e a visitação de animais dispersores.

Litter is an important compartment in tropical forests, responsible for most of nutrient cycling. Several environmental factors may affect litter production, and the ones mostly investigated are climate and vegetation structure. The influence of landscape structure on patterns of litter production is poorly studied. This study investigated edge and size effects on patterns of litter production in three Atlantic forest fragments (Ibiúna, SP: 23°35' S - 23°50' S; 46°45' W - 47°15' W), one large (ca. 175 ha) and two small (ca. 5 ha) with different degrees of isolation. The litter collected was fractioned following the predominant plant material, and grouped into two periods, of high and low production. We used analysis of variance and a posteriori tests to detect differences in litter production between edge and center of each fragment, and among the centers of the three fragments. Most biomass consisted of "leaves+flowers", followed by "twigs < 0.5 cm" (62.9% and 24.7% of the total), a common pattern in tropical forests. It was possible to perceive an edge effect related to litter production in the three fragments, especially in the large one, and higher litter production in their centers. The observed patterns showed to be strongly related to the vegetation structure, as the size of trees and canopy density. A higher production of "fruits+seeds" in the large fragment or in the small and connected one indicate a relationship between forest connectivity and the activity of disperser animals.

A composição da chuva de sementes permite inferir sobre o desenvolvimento, o direcionamento sucessional e a regeneração de comunidades vegetais. Em paisagens fragmentadas, é grandemente influenciada pela conectividade entre fragmentos remanescentes e pela estrutura da vegetação. Foram comparadas as chuvas de sementes em três fragmentos de Mata Atlântica (Caucaia do Alto, SP), em função de seus tamanhos, graus de conectividade na paisagem, situação de borda e interior, grau de perturbação e características estruturais da vegetação, para verificar a influência desses parâmetros nas respectivas chuvas de sementes. As sementes foram classificadas conforme síndrome de dispersão primária, hábito e tipo funcional das espécies. Foi testada a possível influência da borda sobre esses atributos (qui-quadrado). Padrões entre características dos fragmentos (tamanho, conexão), posição dos coletores (borda, interior) e a abundância dos diferentes diásporos foram explorados por análise de correspondência destendencionada (DCA) e análise de correlação de Spearman. Das 28.873 sementes coletadas, a maioria foi de espécies arbóreas (80,7%) e zoocóricas (73,7%). No fragmento "pequeno/isolado" houve predominância de espécies arbóreas tardias. O fragmento "pequeno/conectado" mostrou características opostas às do isolado. O fragmento "grande/fonte", com a maior diversidade, mostrou uma situação bem definida de borda e interior. Com base nesses parâmetros, os padrões encontrados sugerem uma melhor qualidade ecológica do fragmento "pequeno/isolado", seguido do "grande/fonte" e, finalmente, do "pequeno/conectado". Houve uma oposição entre os efeitos de conectividade e estrutura da vegetação, tendo esta sido mais importante na determinação dos padrões encontrados quanto ao hábito, tipo funcional e síndrome de dispersão das espécies das chuvas de sementes do que a conectividade da paisagem.

Information on seed-rain composition of plant communities allows predictions concerning the successional development of the community and its recovery potential. In fragmented landscapes, seed rain is highly influenced by the connectivity among the remaining fragments and by vegetation structure. In this study we compared the seed rain of three fragments of Atlantic forest (Caucaia do Alto, SP), taking into account fragment size, connectivity in the landscape, edge/interior condition, vegetation structure, and previous disturbance, to verify how these parameters affected the seed rain. Seeds were classified according to primary dispersal syndrome, species life form, and functional type. Based on species attributes, we tested for possible edge effects (chi-squared). We searched for relationships among fragment features (size, connectivity), seed trap position (edge, interior), and the abundance of each diaspore type through detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and Spearman correlation test. The majority of the 28,873 seeds belonged to arboreal (80.7%) and zoochoric species (73.7%). Late successional tree species predominated in the "small/isolated" fragment, while the "small/connected" fragment showed opposite characteristics. The "large/source" fragment had the highest species diversity and a well-defined edge. Based on these parameters, patterns point to a better ecological condition in the "small/isolated" fragment, followed by the "large/source", and finally by the "small/connected" fragments. We found a contrast between the effects of connectivity and vegetation structure; the latter was more important than fragment connectivity in determining patterns of life form, functional type and dispersal syndrome of seed-rain species.
