ABSTRACT Stress caused by defoliation can compromise the physiological quality of soybean seeds. However, there is evidence that the application of nitrogen (N) can be an alternative to reduce the qualitative losses in seeds caused by defoliating insects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of topdressing N fertilization in improving the physiological quality of soybean seeds from plants subjected to artificial defoliation. The experimental design was a randomized block arranged in a 2×4 factorial scheme with four replicates. The treatments consisted of two levels of defoliation (33 and 66%) and four doses of N (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg ha-1), using urea (45% N), applied two days after defoliation. Artificial defoliation was performed during the R3 stage by removing one (33%) and two leaflets (66%) from each trifoliate leaf under field conditions. At stage R5.1, leaf area was quantified, and after harvesting, germination, emergence, length, total dry mass, electrical conductivity, total protein content, mass of 1000 seeds, and tetrazolium (vigor and viability) tests were carried out. It was concluded that increasing the defoliation from 33 to 66% impaired the physiological quality of soybean seeds. The use of nitrogen fertilization for coverage after defoliation at the beginning of the reproductive phase cannot minimize qualitative losses in seeds.

ABSTRACT Harvest delay can alter the physiological and sanitary quality of sorghum seeds due to the longer exposure time of seeds to adverse environmental conditions in the field. In this study, we investigated the impact of delayed Sorghum sp. harvest on the physiological and sanitary quality of seeds in four hybrids grown in the tropical soil of the Brazilian Cerrado region. Plants from four Sorghum sp. hybrids (IPA SUDAN 4202, BRS 658, BRS 810, and BRS 373) were grown and submitted to four seed harvest periods (0, 7, 14, and 21 days after stage 9 - seed physiological maturity). The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized block design in a 4 × 4 factorial, with four replicates. At each harvest period, the thousand-seed weight, water content, first count of the germination test, germination, seedling emergence, emergence speed index, seedling dry matter, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, and sanitary quality of seeds were determined. Seeds of higher physiological and sanitary quality of the IPA SUDAN 4202 and BRS 658 sorghum hybrids can be obtained when the harvest is carried out up to 7 days after the physiological maturity stage. However, the delay in seed harvesting at 14 and 21 days after physiological maturity results in a higher incidence of Colletotrichum sp., Curvularia sp., Rhizoctonia sp., and Alternaria sp. on the seeds of these hybrids. Delaying the harvest of sorghum seeds from 7 days after the physiological maturity stage compromises seed vigor and viability and increases the incidence of pathogens.

ABSTRACT Peppers need to be characterized for the in situ conservation of species that might be important for breeding purposes. In this study, we characterized the diversity of 23 pepper genotypes through eight qualitative and 12 quantitative descriptors. The pepper samples were collected from the city of Manaus and in the municipalities of Rio Preto da Eva and Iranduba in the state of Amazonas. We performed descriptive analysis, analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation analysis, and principal component analysis (PCA) and used the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) to analyze the data. The differences between the genotypes for all descriptors evaluated were significant. Among the genotypes collected, four pepper species were identified, including Capsicum chinense (14 genotypes), Capsicum frutescens (two genotypes), Capsicum baccatum (one genotype), and Capsicum annuum (four genotypes), and two other genotypes were obtained with unidentified species. The PCA and UPGMA clustering methods could be used to efficiently differentiate between the genotypes by applying quantitative and qualitative descriptors of fruits and seeds. These methods helped to identify different genotypes (G1 and G15) and separate them into distinct groups associated with the distribution of species based on quantitative data only. Overall, our findings suggested that the genetic variability in Capsicum available in the State of Amazonas might be useful in breeding programs.

RESUMO As pimentas precisam ser caracterizadas para a conservação in situ da espécie que possam ser importantes para fins de reprodução. Neste estudo, caracterizamos a diversidade de 23 genótipos de pimenta por meio de oito descritores qualitativos e 12 quantitativos. As amostras de pimenta foram coletadas na cidade de Manaus e nos municípios de Rio Preto da Eva e Iranduba no estado do Amazonas. Realizamos análise descritiva, análise de variância, análise de correlação de Pearson e análise de componentes principais (ACP) e usamos o método de grupo de pares não ponderados com média aritmética (UPGMA) para analisar os dados. As diferenças entre os genótipos para todos os descritores avaliados foram significativas. Dentre os genótipos coletados, foram identificadas quatro espécies de pimenta, sendo elas Capsicum chinense (14 genótipos), Capsicum frutescens (dois genótipos), Capsicum baccatum (um genótipo) e Capsicum annuum (quatro genótipos), e outros dois genótipos foram obtidos com espécies não identificadas. Os métodos de agrupamento ACP e UPGMA podem ser usados para diferenciar eficientemente os genótipos por meio da aplicação de descritores quantitativos e qualitativos de frutos e sementes. Esses métodos ajudaram a identificar diferentes genótipos (G1 e G15) e separá-los em grupos distintos associados à distribuição das espécies com base apenas em dados quantitativos. No geral, nossos achados sugerem que a variabilidade genética em Capsicum disponível no Estado do Amazonas pode ser útil em programas de melhoramento.

Abstract Phosphorus (P) deficiency has been identified as one of the main abiotic stresses that limits soybean productivity under tropical conditions - the objective of the research was to evaluate the efficiency of P utilization of 25 soybean cultivars [Glycine max (L. ) Merrill.] Cultivated in a sandy soil of the Brazilian Cerrado. Responsive and efficient soybean genotypes in terms of P utilization were classified by the method of Fageria and Kluthcouski (1980) and the hierarchical method of clustering of minimum variance of Ward to discriminate similar groups. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design in a 2 × 25 factorial design with four replications. The treatments consisted of two levels of P availability in the soil [low availability (20 mg kg-1) and high availability (200 mg kg-1)] and 25 soybean cultivars where the height of insertion of the first pod was evaluated. , number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, mass of 1000 grains and grain yield. With the results of grain production, the efficiency of response to phosphate fertilization was calculated for the determination of a new grouping technique according to the similarity between genotypes.

Resumo A deficiência de fósforo (P) tem sido apontada com um dos principais estresses abióticos que limita a produtividade da soja em condições tropicais- o objetivo da pesquisa foi de avaliar a eficiência de utilização do P de 25 cultivares de soja [Glycine max (L.) Merrill.] Cultivadas em um solo arenoso do Cerrado brasileiro. Os genótipos de soja responsivos e eficientes quanto à utilização de P foram classificados pelo método de Fageria e Kluthcouski (1980) e o método hierárquico de agrupamento de variância mínima de Ward para discriminar grupos similares. O experimento foi conduzido no delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 × 25 com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por dois níveis de disponibilidade de P no solo [baixa disponibilidade (20 mg kg-1) e alta disponibilidade (200 mg kg-1)] e por 25 cultivares de soja onde foram avaliados a altura de inserção da primeira vagem, número de vagens por planta, número de grãos por vagem, massa de 1000 grãos e produção de grãos. Com os resultados de produção de grãos foi calculada a eficiência de resposta à adubação fosfatada para a determinação de uma nova técnica de agrupação segundo a similaridade entre genótipos.

RESUMO A aplicação tardia de nitrogênio (N) pode ser uma prática agronômica para aumentar o rendimento da soja e o teor de proteína dos grãos em cultivares modernos de alto potencial produtivo. Um estudo para avaliar a resposta de cultivares de soja em relação à aplicação tardia de N em suplementação à inoculação de Bradyrhizobium spp. foi conduzido em dois solos do Cerrado de média e alta fertilidade durante a safra 2019/2020. Os tratamentos foram dispostos no delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 × 2 × 5: dois ambientes de produção agrícola [UFMS 1 (média fertilidade) e UFMS 2 (alta fertilidade)], duas cultivares de soja (TMG 7067 IPRO e BMX Bônus IPRO) e cinco doses de aplicação tardia de N (0, 50, 100, 150 e 200 kg N ha-1), com quatro repetições. As doses de N foram aplicadas em cobertura no estádio fenológico R5.3. Análise de correlação canônica foi utilizada para avaliar a relação entre o grupo de variáveis independentes (ambientes de produção agrícola, cultivar de soja e doses de aplicação de N) e dependentes (características agronômicas da soja). As aplicações tardias de N não afetaram as características agronômicas (altura de planta, altura da primeira vagem, número de vagens por planta, número de grãos por vagem e massa de 1.000 grãos) e não aumentaram a produtividade e o teor de proteína dos grãos das duas cultivares de soja, independentemente do nível de fertilidade (médio ou alto) da área produção agrícola. Conclui-se que quando estirpes eficientes de Bradyrhizobium spp. são utilizadas no cultivo da soja em solos do Cerrado de média e alta fertilidade, não há necessidade de aplicar doses tardias de fertilizante nitrogenado.

ABSTRACT Late season nitrogen (N) applications may serve as cultural practices to increase soybean yield and grain protein concentration in modern high-yielding cultivars. A study to evaluate the response of soybean cultivars to late N application in supplementation to Bradyrhizobium spp. inoculation was conducted in two Brazilian Cerrado agricultural soils with medium and high fertility during the 2019/2020 growing season. Treatments were arranged in a randomized block design in a 2×2×5 factorial scheme: two agricultural production environments [UFMS 1 (medium fertility) and UFMS 2 (high fertility)], two soybean cultivars (TMG 7067 IPRO and BMX Bônus IPRO), and five late N application rates (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N ha-1), with four replicates. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) was used to investigate the interrelationships between the groups of independent (agricultural production environments, soybean cultivars, and N application rates) and dependent (soybean agronomic traits) variables. Nitrogen rates were applied in topdressing at the R5.3 soybean growth stage. Late N applications did not affect soybean agronomic traits (plant height, first pod height, pod number per plant, grain number per pod, and 1,000-grain mass) and did not increase the grain protein concentration or yield of the soybean cultivars, regardless of the fertility level of the agricultural area. We conclude that when efficient strains of Bradyrhizobium spp. are used in soybean cropping in medium- and high-fertility Cerrado soils, there is no need to apply late rates of N fertilizer.

RESUMO Neste estudo, avaliamos o impacto de duas posições de plantio de mudas de mandioca, cv. ‘Vassourinha’, combinada com diferentes épocas e doses de aplicação de nitrogênio, sobre a produtividade e outras características agronômicas. No experimento, o tratamento foi inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 2 × 3 × 4 com duas posições das estacas [horizontal (PH) e vertical (PV)], três momentos de aplicação de N (45, 90 e 135 dias após plantio) e quatro doses de N (0, 80, 160 e 240 kg ha-1), com seis repetições. Registramos e avaliamos a altura da planta, o número de brotações, o diâmetro do caule, a biomassa da parte aérea, o número de raízes comerciais, a produção total e a índice de coleta. A adição de 240 kg ha-1 de N e PH aumentou a altura das plantas e o diâmetro do caule, mas não afetou o número de raízes comerciais, a produção total ou o índice de coleta. O tratamento com adição de fertilizante nitrogenado 135 dias após o plantio com 240 kg ha-1 de N e plantio no PV proporcionou a maior quantidade de biomassa da parte aérea sem influenciar a produtividade da cultura.

ABSTRACT In this study, we evaluated the impact of two planting positions of cassava cuttings, cv. ‘Vassourinha’, combined with different times and doses of nitrogen application, on productivity and other agronomic traits. In the experiment, the treatment was completely randomized using a 2 × 3 × 4 factorial scheme with two positions of the cuttings [horizontal (PH) and vertical (PV)], three instances of N application (45, 90, and 135 days after planting), and four doses of N (0, 80, 160, and 240 kg ha-1), with six repetitions. We recorded and evaluated the plant height, number of shoots, stem diameter, biomass of the aerial part, number of commercial roots, the total production, and the collection index. The addition of 240 kg ha-1 N and PH increased plant height and stem diameter but did not affect the number of commercial roots, total production, or the collection index. The treatment involving the addition of nitrogen fertilizer 135 days after planting with 240 kg ha-1 N and planting in the PV provided the highest amount of shoot biomass without influencing crop productivity.

RESUMO Veitchia merrilli (Becc) H. E. Moore é uma palmeira muito utilizada na jardinagem. Devido à produção contínua de flores nas inflorescências, há frutos e sementes em vários estágios de maturação em uma mesma planta, dificultando a determinação do melhor estágio de maturação dos frutos para obtenção de sementes vigorosas. Este estudo mesurou as características biométricas do fruto em diferentes estádios de maturação e identificou o melhor estádio de maturação do fruto para obter sementes com ótima qualidade fisiológica. Frutos maduros foram colhidos da copa de 10 árvores e do solo, categorizados de acordo com seu estágio de maturação e caracterizados quanto ao comprimento total, diâmetro equatorial e massa fresca. Um experimento para identificar o melhor estádio de maturação dos frutos para obtenção de sementes de V. merrilli com qualidade fisiológica satisfatória foi realizado em casa de vegetação, com cinco tratamentos (estágio de maturação) e dez repetições; cada parcela foi composta por 20 sementes. Altura da planta, comprimento da raiz, diâmetro do caule, peso seco da raiz e da parte aérea, peso seco total e índice de qualidade de Dickson foram medidos. O estádio de fruto verde é o mais indicado para a obtenção de sementes de V. merrilli com as melhores qualidades fisiológicas. Os frutos no estádio de maturação vermelho escuro apresentaram o maior comprimento, enquanto os do estádio de transição verde apresentaram o maior diâmetro e massa fresca.

ABSTRACT Veitchia merrilli (Becc) H. E. Moore is a palm tree widely used in gardening. Due to the continuous production of flowers on the inflorescences, there are fruits and seeds in various stages of maturation on the same plant, making it hard to determine the best fruit maturation stage for obtaining vigorous seeds. This study measured the biometric characteristics of the fruit at different stages of maturation and identified the best fruit maturation stage from which to obtain seeds with optimal physiological quality. Mature fruits were harvested from the tops of 10 trees and the ground, categorized according to their maturation stage and measured for overall length, equatorial diameter, and fresh weight. An experiment to identify the best fruit maturation stage for obtaining seeds of the V. merrilli with satisfactory physiological quality was carried out in a greenhouse, with five treatments (maturation stage) and ten replications; each plot was composed of 20 seeds. Plant height, root length, stem diameter, root and above ground dry weight, total dry weight, and Dickson’s quality index were measured. The green fruit stage is the most suitable for obtaining seeds of V. merrilli with the best physiological qualities. The fruits at the dark red maturity stage had the greatest length, while the those in the green transition stage had the greatest diameter and fresh weight.

Resumo A calagem e adubação mineral podem melhorar o crescimento e a qualidade das mudas de espécies florestais. Os efeitos da aplicação de adubação nitrogenada e calcário sobre o crescimento e a qualidade das mudas de canafístula [Peltophorum dubium (Sprengel) Taubert] foram investigados neste estudo. Plantas de Peltophorum dubium foram cultivadas em sacos de polietileno de 1,4 L, preenchidos com solo arenoso e mantidos em condições de casa de vegetação. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 4 × 2: quatro doses de N (0, 100, 200 e 300 mg dm-3) e aplicação ou não de calcário, com quatro repetições. A altura da planta, diâmetro do caule, relação altura/diâmetro e número de folhas foram mensurados aos 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias após a emergência. Aos 120 dias, também foram determinados o volume radicular, massa seca da parte aérea e das raízes, acúmulo de N na parte aérea, relação entre matéria seca da parte aérea/raiz e o índice de qualidade de Dickson. Os resultados reportaram que a aplicação de calcário e de fertilizante nitrogenado tem efeito benéfico sobre a maioria das características da parte aérea e das raízes das mudas de Peltophorum dubium, e quando as mudas de Peltophorum dubium são produzidas em um substrato constituído de um solo arenoso da região do Cerrado, a aplicação de calcário e o uso de 200 mg N dm-3 aplicado em cobertura deve ser recomendado para a obtenção de mudas de alta qualidade.

Abstract The liming and mineral fertilization can improve the growth and quality of forest species seedlings. The effects of the application of nitrogen fertilizer rates and limestone on growth and quality of Peltophorum dubium (Sprengel) Taubert seedlings were investigated in this study. Peltophorum dubium plants were grown in 1.4-L polyethylene bags filled with sandy soil under greenhouse conditions. Treatments were arranged in a randomized block design in a 4 × 2 factorial: four of N application rates (0, 100, 200 and 300 mg dm-3) and application or non-application of limestone, with four replicates. The plant height, stem diameter, height/diameter ratio and number of leaves were measured at 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after emergence. At 120 days, root volume, shoot and root dry matter, N accumulation in shoots, shoot/root dry matter ratio, and Dickson quality index was also measured. The results reported that limestone and N fertilizer application have a positive effect on most of the growth and quality traits of Peltophorum dubium seedlings, and when Peltophorum dubium seedlings are produced in a substrate consisting of a sandy soil from Brazilian Cerrado, the limestone application and use of 200 mg N dm-3 in topdressing should be recommended to obtain high-quality seedlings.

RESUMO A qualidade fisiológica das sementes pode ser alterada pelo manejo nutricional da cultura da soja, principalmente pela adubação com nitrogênio (N), que é componente estrutural de diversos compostos orgânicos, incluindo as proteínas, e possui importante função catalítica na ativação de diversas enzimas. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de fontes e doses de fertilizante nitrogenado mineral associado à inoculação de Bradyrhizobium spp. sobre a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de soja foram investigados nesta pesquisa. Os tratamentos foram dispostos no delineamento de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 3 × 5 [três fontes de fertilizante de N (inoculação de Bradyrhizobium spp.; inoculação de Bradyrhizobium spp. + aplicação ureia e inoculação de Bradyrhizobium spp. + aplicação de sulfato de amônio] e da aplicação de cinco doses de N (0, 50, 100, 150 e 200 kg N ha-1)], com quatro repetições. O fertilizante nitrogenado foi aplicado em cobertura no estádio fenológico R2, quando as plantas de soja estavam em plena floração. Os seguintes parâmetros de qualidade das sementes de soja foram avaliados: massa de 1.000 sementes, teor de proteína bruta, germinação, teste de primeira contagem de germinação, emergência de plântulas, índice de velocidade de emergência, envelhecimento acelerado, condutividade elétrica, vigor e viabilidade das sementes pelo teste de tetrazólio. A aplicação de 50 kg N ha-1 de fertilizante mineral (sulfato de amônio ou ureia) associada a inoculação de Bradyrhizobium spp. melhorou a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de soja, resultando na maior porcentagem de germinação, emergência e índice de velocidade de emergência de plântulas. A aplicação de sulfato de amônio ou ureia (50 kg N ha-1) durante o estádio de pleno florescimento de plantas de soja inoculadas com Bradyrhizobium spp. pode melhorar a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de soja.

ABSTRACT The physiological seed quality can be altered by nutritional management of the soybean crop, especially by the fertilization with nitrogen (N), which is a structural component of several organic compounds, including proteins, and has an important catalytic role in the activation of several enzymes. The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of sources and application rates of mineral N fertilizer associated with inoculation of Bradyrhizobium spp. on physiological quality of soybean seeds. The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized block design, in a 3 × 5 factorial arrangement [three N fertilizer sources (Bradyrhizobium spp. inoculation; Bradyrhizobium spp. inoculation + urea application; and, Bradyrhizobium spp. inoculation + ammonium sulfate application) and five N application rates (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N ha-1)], with four replicates. Nitrogen fertilizer was applied in topdressing at R2 stage when soybean plants were in full flowering. The quality parameters evaluated in soybean seeds were: 1,000-seed mass, seed protein content, germination, first germination count test, seedling emergence, emergence speed index, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, vigor and viability of seeds by tetrazolium test. The application of 50 kg N ha-1 of mineral fertilizer (ammonium sulfate or urea) associated with the Bradyrhizobium spp. inoculation enhanced the physiological quality of soybean seeds, resulting in higher seed germination percentage and higher emergence and seedling emergence speed index. The application of ammonium sulfate or urea (50 kg N ha-1) at full flowering of soybean plants inoculated with Bradyrhizobium spp. can improve the physiological quality of soybean seeds.

RESUMO O objetivo no trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de dessecantes químicos e épocas de colheita sobre a qualidade fisiológica e expressão enzimática em sementes de soja. O delineamento experimental foi blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, em esquema fatorial (4 × 3 + 1): quatro dessecantes (paraquat - 2 L ha-1, glufosinato de amônio - 2 L ha-1, diquat - 1,5 L ha-1, saflufenacil 40 g ha-1) aplicado no estádio fenológico R7.1 (início do amarelecimento das folhas), com três épocas de colheita (0; 14 e 28 dias após o estádio fenológico R8) mais o controle (ausência de dessecante e colhida em R8). Foi avaliada a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de soja por meio de testes em laboratório e a expressão enzimática das enzimas malato desidrogenase, álcool desidrogenase, esterase, isocitrato liase e para a superóxido dismutase. A colheita de sementes no estádio R8+14 promove as maiores perdas na qualidade das sementes, todavia, não só tempo de atraso afeta, mas a ocorrência de precipitações é decisiva, sendo que chuva de 50 mm, já proporciona deterioração das sementes de soja. Os dessecantes diquat e paraquat foram os que promoveram os menores e maiores danos à qualidade fisiológica das sementes, respectivamente. A expressão das enzimas álcool desidrogenase, esterase e isocitrato liase são eficientes no monitoramento e com adequada correlação com a qualidade fisiológica. A malato desidrogenase e superóxido dismutase apresentam baixa correlação com os testes fisiológicos realizados nas sementes de soja.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effect of chemical desiccants and harvest times on the enzymatic expression and physiological quality of soybean seeds. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with four replications, in a factorial scheme (4 × 3 + 1) with four desiccants (paraquat - 2 L ha-1, ammonium glufosinate - 2 L ha-1, diquat - 1.5 L ha-1, and saflufenacil - 40 g ha-1). These were applied at the phenological stage R7.1 (beginning of leaf yellowing) and at three harvest times (0, 14, and 28 days after the phenological stage R8). There was also a control treatment (no desiccant, harvested at R8). The physiological quality of soybean seeds and the enzymatic expressions of malate dehydrogenase, alcohol dehydrogenase, esterase, isocitrate lyase, and superoxide dismutase were evaluated in laboratory tests. Seeds harvested at the R8 + 14 stage led to the highest losses in seed quality. However, the 50 mm rainfall also affected seed deterioration. The desiccants diquat and paraquat provided the lowest and the highest damage to the seed physiological quality, respectively. The expression of the enzymes alcohol dehydrogenase, esterase, and isocitrate lyase were efficient and had an adequate correlation with the physiological quality. Malate dehydrogenase and superoxide dismutase had no satisfactory relation with the physiological tests performed with soybean seeds.

RESUMO O uso de dessecantes pode permitir a obtenção de sementes com máxima qualidade fisiológica e sanitária, devido o menor período em que as sementes ficam expostas as condições adversas no campo aguardando o estádio de maturação para colheita. O objetivo neste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de dessecantes químicos e épocas de colheita sobre a qualidade fisiológica e sanitária em sementes de soja. O ensaio foi realizado em delineamento em blocos casualizados, disposto em esquema fatorial (4 × 3) + 1, sendo quatro herbicidas para a dessecação (gramoxone - 2 L ha-1, glufosinato - 2 L ha-1, reglone - 1,5 L ha-1, saflufenacil 40 g ha-1) aplicado no estádio fenológico R7.1 (maturidade fisiológica e 65% de umidade), com três épocas de colheita (0; sete e 14 dias após o estádio fenológico R8 - maturação plena), mais o controle (ausência de dessecante e colhida em R8), com quatro repetições. O uso do dessecante gramoxone e as sementes colhidas sete dias após R8 proporciona maior qualidade fisiológica de sementes de soja, conforme observado nas variáveis germinação, danos por umidade, danos mecânicos e a incidência de Colletotrichum sp., Phomopsis sp., Penicilium sp., Fusarium sp., Cercospora kikuchii e Alternaria sp.. A colheita de sementes no estádio R8+14 promove as maiores perdas na qualidade das sementes. O uso de glufosinato de amônio e saflufenacil como dessecantes não são recomendados, devido à redução na qualidade fisiológica das sementes de soja.

ABSTRACT The use of desiccants may result in seeds with high physiological and sanitary quality due to the shorter period of exposure to field adverse conditions before the maturity stage for harvest. This study evaluated the effect of chemical desiccants and harvest times on the physiological and sanitary quality of soybean seeds. The experiment consisted of a randomized block design, arranged in a factorial scheme (4 × 3) + 1, with four replications. The first factor corresponded to four desiccation (grammoxone-2 L ha-1, glufosinate-2 L ha-1, reglone-1.5 L ha-1, and saflufenacil-40 g ha-1) applied at the R7.1 phenological stage (physiological maturity and 65% moisture with three harvest times (0, 7, and 14 days after the R8 phenological stage) and additional treatment (control, application of water only, and harvest at the R8 stage), with four replications. The use of the grammoxone desiccant and seeds harvested at seven days after the R8 stage resulted in soybean seeds of the highest physiological quality, as observed for the variables germination, moisture damage, mechanical damage, and incidences of Colletotrichum sp., Phomopsis sp., Penicillium sp. Fusarium sp., Cercospora kikuchii, and Alternaria sp. Seeds harvested at the R8 + 14 stage had the greatest losses in seed quality. The use of ammonium glufosinate and saflufenacil as desiccants is not recommended due to the reduction in the physiological quality of soybean seeds.

RESUMO O teste de protrusão radicular é um teste de vigor, baseando no princípio de que sementes com alto vigor emitem a raiz primária mais rápido em comparação com as menos vigorosas. A chia é uma planta propagada por sementes, sendo motivo de pesquisa pelos seus benefícios a saúde, mas com poucas informações técnicas sobre a cultura. O objetivo do trabalho foi adequar à metodologia do teste de protrusão radicular para determinação do vigor de lotes de sementes de chia. Utilizou-se cinco lotes de sementes de chia, submetidos à avaliação da qualidade inicial por meio dos testes de germinação e vigor (primeira contagem de germinação, emergência e índice de velocidade de emergência). O teste de protrusão radicular foi realizado nas temperaturas de 20, 25 e 30 ºC, e avaliado a cada duas horas até 42 horas, onde se obteve a estabilidade da protrusão, e sendo utilizado o critério de contagem de 2 mm de raiz primária. O teste de protrusão radicular na temperatura de 20 ºC não distinguiu os lotes semelhantes à emergência. A 25 °C, foi possível classificar os lotes de forma semelhante à emergência após 30 horas. A temperatura de 30 °C foi eficiente na aceleração da protrusão radicular e separação dos lotes de sementes. O teste de protrusão radicular é sensível para detectar diferenças de vigor entre os lotes de sementes de chia, devendo ser conduzido por 30 horas a 25 ºC.

ABSTRACT The root protrusion test is a vigor test based on the principle that seeds with high vigor emit the primary root faster than less vigorous ones. Chia is a plant propagated by seeds and it is studied owing to its health benefits, but there is little technical information known about its culture. The objective of this work was to adapt the methodology of the root protrusion test to determine the vigor of chia seed lots. Five chia seed lots were submitted to an initial quality evaluation using germination and vigor tests (first germination, emergence, and emergence speed index). The root protrusion test was performed at temperatures of 20, 25 and 30 °C and evaluated every 2 h up to 42 h. During the test, protrusion stability was assessed and the criterion of 2 mm primary root count was used. The root protrusion test at 20 °C did not distinguish the lots in the same way as emergence. At 25 °C it was possible to classify lots after 30 h similarly to emergence. At 30 °C, root protrusion and the separation of seed lots was accelerated. Thus, the root protrusion test conducted for 30 h at 25 °C has sufficient sensitivity to detect differences in vigor between chia seed lots.

RESUMO: O aprimoramento das características tecnológicas da fibra de algodão é uma demanda constante da indústria têxtil. Este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar o potencial de materiais melhorados com alta porcentagem de plumas para contribuir com alelos que aumentam a porcentagem de plumas com fibra extra longa (ELS) no algodão de terras altas. Dois materiais contrastantes para porcentagem de fibra (LP) e comprimento de fibra (FL) foram usados, um com fibra longa e uma baixa porcentagem de fibra (pai A) e outro com alta porcentagem de fibra e comprimento médio (pai B). As seguintes variáveis foram avaliadas: porcentagem de fibra (LP), comprimento médio da metade superior (UHML), uniformidade da fibra (FU), resistência da fibra (FS) e alongamento (EL). A análise dialélica foi realizada utilizando o Método 4 de Griffing adaptado para dialelo parcial. Os efeitos aditivos foram predominantes em relação aos efeitos não aditivos. O LP médio foi maior quando se usou o pai B. O oposto ocorreu para o UHML. Uma correlação negativa foi detectada entre LP e UHML, mostrando a dificuldade de obter ganho genético para ambas as características ao mesmo tempo.

ABSTRACT: Technological traits improvement of cotton fiber is a constant demand by textile industry. This research aimed to identify the potential of improved materials with high lint percentage to contribute with alleles that increase the lint percentage in Extra long staple fiber (ELS) upland cotton. Two contrasting materials for lint percentage (LP) and fiber length (FL) were used, one with long fiber and a low lint percentage (parent A) and another with high lint percentage and medium length (parent B). The following variables were evaluated: lint percentage (LP), upper half mean length (UHML), fiber uniformity (FU), fiber strength (FS), and elongation (EL). Diallel analysis was performed using the Griffing’s Method 4 adapted to partial diallel. Additive effects were predominant over non-additive effects. The mean LP was higher when using parent B. The opposite occurred for UHML. A negative correlation was detected between LP and UHML, showing the difficulty of obtaining genetic gain for both traits at the same time.

RESUMO: A germinação e o crescimento de plantas de melão (Cucumis melo L.) podem ser severamente afetadas pelo excesso de sais no solo ou na água de irrigação. No entanto, os efeitos negativos do estresse salino podem ser amenizados com o uso de métodos adequados de condicionamento das sementes. Assim, este estudo objetivou investigar os efeitos do osmocondicionamento como indutor da tolerância ao estresse salino em sementes de melão expostas à níveis de salinidade. As sementes foram imersas por 22 h à 25 °C em água destilada (hidrocondicionamento) ou em solução de 0,5% de KNO3 (osmocondicionamento). Após secagem, as sementes foram distribuídas em caixas plásticas com papel mata-borrão contendo as diferentes soluções de NaCl preparadas com potencial osmótico de 0,0 MPa (controle), -0,3 MPa (estresse suave) e -0,6 MPa (estresse severo). Um tratamento com sementes secas não condicionadas foi utilizado como controle. As caixas plásticas foram mantidas em germinador de sementes, a 25 °C por 14 dias. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 3 × 3, com quatro repetições de 25 sementes. Os resultados mostraram que o condicionamento de sementes com água e KNO3 pode ser aplicado com sucesso em sementes de melão para amenizar os efeitos adversos do estresse salino durante o estágio inicial de crescimento das plantas. No entanto, sob estresse salino severo, o hidrocondicionamento deve ser utilizado por resultar em maior percentagem de germinação e maior taxa de crescimento inicial das plântulas quando comparado ao osmocondicionamento. O uso de sementes de melão sem condicionamento prévio não deve ser adotado em áreas de cultivo afetadas pela salinidade, pois resultam em baixa taxa de germinação e reduzido crescimento inicial das plantas.

ABSTRACT: The germination and growth of melon (Cucumis melo L.) plants can be severely affected by excess salts in the soil or irrigation water; however, negative effects of salt stress can be attenuated using appropriate methods of seed priming. Thus, effects of osmopriming as inducer of salt stress tolerance in melon seeds exposed to salinity levels were investigated in this study. Seeds were soaked for 22 h at 25 °C in the dark in distilled water (hydropriming) or 0.5% KNO3 solution (osmopriming), and after drying, were distributed in plastic boxes with blotter paper containing different NaCl solutions prepared with osmotic pressure of 0.0 MPa (control), -0.3 MPa (mild stress), and -0.6 MPa (severe stress). Unprimed dry seeds were taken as control. The plastic boxes were kept into a seed germinator, at 25 °C for 14 days. A completely randomized design in a 3 × 3 factorial schemes with four replicates of 25 seeds was used. Results showed that the seed priming with water and KNO3 may be successfully applied on melon seeds to alleviate the adverse effects of saline stress in initial stages of plant growth. However, under severe salt stress conditions, hydropriming should be used because it results in higher germination and initial growth rate of the seedlings when compared to the osmopriming. Use of unprimed seeds should not be adopted in cultivation areas affected by salinity because they result in low germination rate and reduced initial plant growth.

RESUMO Os fungicidas utilizados para o controle da ferrugem asiática da soja são constituídos por misturas entre os modos de ação sistêmicos (triazóis) e meso-sistêmicos (estrobilurinas). Entretanto, para o controle do míldio da soja, existem disponíveis apenas fungicidas protetores. Objetivou-se avaliar a eficácia de fungicidas com diferentes modos de ação no controle de míldio e ferrugem asiática da soja. Realizou-se experimento a campo, em delineamento de blocos casualizados, constituído de sete tratamentos [controle negativo; difeconazole em V7 + (azoxystrobina + ciproconazole) em R2 e R5.1; (tebuconazole + carbendazim) em V7 + (azoxystrobina + tebuconazole) em R2 e R5.1; carbendazim e mancozebe em V7 + (azoxystrobina + tebuconazole) em R2 e R5.1; (tebuconazole + carbendazim) em V7 + mancozebe em V7 + (azoxystrobina + tebuconazole) em R2 e R5.1; (tebuconazole + carbendazim) em V7 + (azoxystrobina + tebuconazole) em R2 e R5.1 + mancozebe em R2 e R5.1; (tebuconazole + carbendazim) em V7 + azoxystrobina + tebuconazole em R2 e R5.1 + mancozebe em R2 e R5.1 + carbendazim em R5.1] e quatro repetições. Os parâmetros avaliados foram: severidade das doenças baseada em escalas diagramáticas, fitotoxidez, eficácia de produtos, desfolha, número de vagens por planta, número de grãos por vagem, massa de mil grãos e produtividade. Os tratamentos com adição do mancozebe mostraram-se mais eficientes na redução da severidade de míldio e ferrugem asiática da soja e desfolha, aumentando a produtividade de grãos da cultura. Para o míldio da soja, os tratamentos com adição de mancozebe a benzimidazol, estrobilurinas e triazóis foram mais eficazes na redução da severidade e no controle.

ABSTRACT Fungicides used to control the Asian soybean rust are composed almost entirely of mixtures involving the systemic (triazoles) and meso-systemic (strobilurins) modes of action. However, to control the soybean downy mildew, only protective fungicides are available. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of fungicides with different modes of action in the control of downy mildew and Asian soybean rust. A field experiment was carried out in a randomized block design, with seven treatments [negative control; difenoconazole at V7 + (azoxystrobin + cyproconazole) at R2 and R5.1; (tebuconazole + carbendazim) at V7 + (azoxystrobin + tebuconazole) at R2 and R5.1; carbendazim and mancozeb at V7 + (azoxystrobin + tebuconazole) at R2 and R5.1; (tebuconazole + carbendazim) at V7 + mancozeb in V7 + (azoxystrobin + tebuconazole) at R2 and R5.1; (tebuconazole + carbendazim) at V7 + (azoxystrobin + tebuconazole) at R2 and R5.1 + mancozeb at R2 and R5.1; (tebuconazole + carbendazim) at V7 + azoxystrobin + tebuconazole at R2 and R5.1 + mancozeb at R2 and R5.1 + carbendazim at R5.1] and four replicates. The following variables were evaluated: disease severity based on diagrammatic scales, phytotoxicity, product effectiveness, defoliation, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, 1,000-seed weight and yield. The treatments with mancozeb addition showed to be more efficient in reducing the severity of mildew and Asian soybean rust and defoliation, providing increased seed yields for the crop. For the soybean downy mildew, the treatments with addition of mancozeb to benzimidazole, strobilurins and triazoles were more efficient in reducing the severity and for the control.
