Abstract ‘BRMGS Camaleão’ is a mungbean cultivar with large, shiny, green seeds released for the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was developed by the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center as line VC 6148-B-16. In seven trials established in the Zona da Mata region, it had an average yield of 1493 kg ha-1 and 1000-seed weight of 68-78 g.

Abstract Carioca grains are the most cultivated commercial group of common bean and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli (Fop) is an important disease under field conditions. Genetic resistance is the most effective control strategy. Thus, our objective was to study the inheritance of Fop resistance in the carioca grain type common bean. Lines CNFC 11965 (S) and CVIII 8511 (R) were crossed to obtain F1 and F2 generations and backcrosses, inoculated with the isolate FOP UFV 01, and severity grades used to estimate genetic parameters. Segregation of resistant and susceptible plants in the F2 generations and backcrosses resulted in dominant monogenic inheritance of Fop resistance. The high values of heritability emphasized the probability of success in the selection processes because environmental factors were not significant. The carioca grain line CVIII 8511 is promising, and its Fop resistance gene can be transferred to commercial cultivars of this group using the backcross method.

RESUMO: Neste estudo objetivou-se utilizar a regressão quantílica (RQ) para caracterizar o efeito do parâmetro de adaptabilidade ao longo de toda a distribuição da variável produtividade em cultivares de feijão preto lançadas por diferentes instituições nacionais de pesquisa nos últimos 50 anos. Para tanto utilizou-se 40 cultivares desenvolvidas pelos programas brasileiros de melhoramento genético entre os anos de 1959 a 2013. Inicialmente foram ajustados modelos de RQ considerando três quantis (τ=0,2, 0,5, 0,8). Posteriormente, com os intervalos de confiança verificou-se que os modelos quantílicos τ=0,2 e 0,8 (RQ0,2 e RQ0,8) apresentaram diferenças quanto ao parâmetro de adaptabilidade e produtividade média. Finalmente, por meio do agrupamento das cultivares em um dos dois grupos definidos a partir de RQ0,2 e RQ0,8, constatou-se que as cultivares mais novas foram associadas ao quantil τ = 0,8, ou seja, aquelas com maiores produtividades e mais responsivas as condições ambientais indicando que o melhoramento ao longo dos últimos 50 anos possibilitou o incremento tanto na produtividade quanto na adaptabilidade das cultivares.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to use quantile regression (QR) to characterize the effect of the adaptability parameter throughout the distribution of the productivity variable on black bean cultivars launched by different national research institutes (research centers) over the last 50 years. For this purpose, 40 cultivars developed by Brazilian genetic improvement programs between 1959 and 2013 were used. Initially, QR models were adjusted considering three quantiles (τ = 0.2, 0.5 and 0.8). Subsequently, with the confidence intervals, quantile models τ = 0.2 and 0.8 (QR0.2 and QR0.8) showed differences regarding the parameter of adaptability and average productivity. Finally, by grouping the cultivars into one of the two groups defined from QR0.2 and QR0.8, it was reported that the younger cultivars were associated to the quantile τ = 0.8, i.e., those with higher yields and more responsive conditions indicating that genetic improvement over the last 50 years resulted in an increase in both the productivity and the adaptability of cultivars.

Abstract Studies highlight the hypocotyl diameter (HD) as an effective indicator of plant architecture (PA). Here, we estimated the genetic gain based on HD to improve PA. Twenty populations of cycles zero (C0) and one (C1), both in the F4 generation, were evaluated for PA, grain yield (GY) and HD. Plants with thickest HD in C0 were intercrossed in a circulant diallel mating design. In cycle C1, an estimated genetic gain of 4.93% was achieved for PA and 4.95% for HD. The populations with the highest probability of breeding lines with a thicker HD belong to cycle C1, and this selection strategy did not alter the GY of the populations of this cycle. Thus, indirect selection based on HD is promising for breeding for common bean PA by recurrent mass selection.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se incorporar informações genômicas de marcadores SNP (“single nucleotide polymorphism”) na avaliação genética das características “stay-green” (SG), arquitetura de planta (AP), aspecto de grãos (AG) e produtividade de grãos (PG) em feijoeiro-comum via modelos Bayesianos. Estes modelos foram comparados quanto a acurácia de predição e habilidade de estimação da herdabilidade para cada característica. Utilizaram-se informações de 80 cultivares genotipadas para 377 marcadores SNP, cujos efeitos de substituição alélica foram estimados por meio de cinco diferentes modelos Bayesianos: Bayes A (BA), B (BB), C (BC), LASSO (BL) e regressão “ridge” (BRR). Embora as acurácias de predição calculadas por meio de análise de validação cruzada tenham sido similares dentro de cada característica, o modelo BB se destacou para a característica SG, enquanto o modelo BRR foi indicado para as demais. As herdabilidades estimadas para SG, AP, AG e PG foram, respectivamente, 0,61, 0,28, 0,32 e 0,29. Em resumo, os métodos contemplados mostraram-se efetivos e de fácil implementação. O conjunto de marcadores utilizado pode auxiliar na seleção precoce de genótipos promissores, uma vez que a incorporação de informações genômicas aumenta a acurácia de predição do mérito genético estimado.

ABSTRACT: We aimed to apply genomic information based on SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) markers for the genetic evaluation of the traits “stay-green” (SG), plant architecture (PA), grain aspect (GA) and grain yield (GY) in common bean through Bayesian models. These models were compared in terms of prediction accuracy and ability for heritability estimation for each one of the mentioned traits. A total of 80 cultivars were genotyped for 377 SNP markers, whose effects were estimated by five different Bayesian models: Bayes A (BA), B (BB), C (BC), LASSO (BL) e Ridge regression (BRR). Although, prediction accuracies calculated by means of cross-validation have been similar within each trait, the BB model stood out for the trait SG, whereas the BRR was indicated for the remaining traits. The heritability estimates for the traits SG, PA, GA and GY were 0.61, 0.28, 0.32 and 0.29, respectively. In summary, the Bayesian methods applied here were effective and ease to be implemented. The used SNP markers can help in the early selection of promising genotypes, since incorporating genomic information increase the prediction accuracy of the estimated genetic merit.

RESUMO. O presente estudo tem como objetivo propor sistemas de controle fuzzy para auxiliar na recomendação de cultivares de diversas culturas agronômicas. Para avaliar a aplicabilidade desses controladores foram utilizados dados de produtividade de grãos de 23 linhagens e duas cultivares de feijão do grupo comercial vermelho, avaliados em nove ambientes da Zona da Mata do Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. A partir dos parâmetros da análise de Eberhart e Russell foram desenvolvidos controladores fuzzy com sistemas de inferência Mamdani e Sugeno. Foram realizadas análises de variância conjunta e de adaptabilidade e estabilidade pelo método de Eberhart e Russell e os parâmetros obtidos para cada linhagem foram submetidos aos respectivos controladores. Verificou-se a ocorrência de interação genótipos por ambientes significativa, existindo a necessidade da realização de análises de adaptabilidade e estabilidade. Em ambos os controladores (Mamdani e Sugeno), sete linhagens (2, 9, 14, 16, 17, 20 e 23) apresentaram adaptabilidade geral, enquanto que somente a linhagem 15 apresentou adaptabilidade a ambientes desfavoráveis. Verificou-se também que ambos os sistemas de inferência adotados, são úteis para desenvolver controladores que visam recomendação de cultivares. Assim, constatou-se potencialidade dos sistemas de controle fuzzy na identificação do comportamento das linhagens de feijoeiro.

ABSTRACT. The objective of the present study was to propose fuzzy control systems to support the recommendation of cultivars of different agronomic crops. Grain yield data from 23 lines and 2 cultivars of red bean were used to evaluate the applicability of these controllers. Genotypes were evaluated in nine environments in the Zona da Mata region, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Using the parameters of Eberhart and Russell analysis, fuzzy controllers were developed with the Mamdani and Sugeno inference systems. Analyses of adaptability and stability were carried out by the method of Eberhart and Russell. The parameters obtained for each genotype were submitted to the respective controllers. There were significant genotypes x environments interaction, which justified the necessity of performing an adaptability and stability analysis. For both controllers (Mamdani and Sugeno), seven lines presented general adaptability, while only one presented adaptability to unfavorable environments. It was also found that both inference systems were useful for developing controllers that had the aim of recommending cultivars. Thus, it was noted that fuzzy control systems have the potential to identify the behavior of bean genotypes.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a adaptabilidade e estabilidade de 29 híbridos comerciais de milho, no sudeste de Minas Gerais, com emprego de três metodologias. Os 29 híbridos comercias de milho foram avaliados para produtividade de grãos, em cinco locais do sudeste de Minas Gerais, na safra 2014/2015. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos ao acaso com duas repetições. Cada parcela foi constituída de duas linhas de cinco metros de comprimento, espaçadas em 0,80 m com área útil de 8,00 m2. Além das análises de variâncias individual e conjunta, empregou-se os métodos de Eberhart & Russell (1966), AMMI (Additive Main Effects and Multiplicative Interaction Analysis) e modelos mistos para avaliar a adaptabilidade e estabilidade dos 29 híbridos. Houve diferença significativa (P < 0,01) para os efeitos de híbridos, ambientes e interação híbridos x ambientes. A maioria dos híbridos avaliados apresentou ampla adaptabilidade e boa estabilidade. Conclui-se que as metodologias de Eberhart & Russell, AMMI e modelos mistos, apresentam resultados semelhantes na classificação de híbridos de milho com ampla adaptabilidade; há divergência na indicação de híbridos com adaptabilidade específica a ambientes favoráveis e desfavoráveis e; com base nas três metodologias, os híbridos SHS7920PRO, BM709PRO2, BRS1055 e o BM650PRO2 apresentam adaptabilidade geral nos ambientes avaliados.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the adaptability and stability of 29 commercial maize hybrids in the southeast of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, employing three methods. The 29 commercial maize hybrids from the 2014/2015 crop were evaluated for grain yield in five locations in the southeast of Minas Gerais. A randomised-block design was used, with two replications. Each lot comprised two rows, five meters in length, at a spacing of 0.80 m, giving an effective area of 8.00 m2. In addition to individual and combined variance analysis, the methods of Eberhart & Russell (1966), AMMI (Additive Main Effects and Multiplicative Interaction Analysis) and mixed models were used to evaluate the adaptability and stability of the 29 hybrids. There was a significant difference (P<0.01) for the effects of hybrid, environment and the hybrid x environment interaction. The majority of the hybrids under evaluation displayed broad adaptability with good stability. It was concluded that the Eberhart & Russell, AMMI and mixed-model methods show similar results in classifying maize hybrids of broad adaptability. There is a difference in indicating hybrids with specific adaptability to favourable and unfavourable environments. Based on the three methods, the hybrids SHS7920PRO, BM709PRO2, BRS1055 and BM650PRO2 show a general adaptability for the environments under evaluation.

Abstract The common bean cultivar with carioca grain type, BRSMG Uai, is recommended for cultivation in Minas Gerais and stands out for its upright plant architecture, which facilitates cultivation and mechanical harvesting. This cultivar has high yield potential and is resistant to the major races of anthracnose that occur in region.

RESUMO O aumento na produtividade de grãos e em outras características agronômicas, em cultivares de feijão, se deve, em grande parte, ao seu melhoramento genético. Objetivou-se estimar o progresso genético para produtividade de grãos e outras características de importância agronômica de cultivares de feijão preto recomendadas por programas de melhoramento, no Brasil, de 1960 a 2013. O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições e 40 cultivares de feijão preto. As características avaliadas foram: produtividade e aparência de grãos, arquitetura de planta, número de vagens por planta e de grãos por vagem e massa de mil grãos. O progresso genético foi estimado com base nas médias das características ao longo dos anos, utilizando-se modelos lineares de regressão bissegmentada, os quais permitiram inferir sobre o ano exato em que o melhoramento do feijão preto começou a apresentar progresso genético significativo. Para produtividade de grãos, o progresso genético foi observado a partir de 1988, com ganho anual de 2,42 %. Melhorias também ocorreram para aparência de grãos (1,85 %), arquitetura de planta (1,35 %), número de vagens por planta (2,36 %) e de grãos por vagem (2,24 %) e massa de mil grãos (1,42 %), principalmente após 1989.

ABSTRACT The increase in grain yield and other agronomic traits, in common bean cultivars, is due, in large part, to its genetic breeding. This study aimed at estimating the genetic progress for grain yield and other important agronomic traits in black common bean cultivars recommended by Brazilian breeding programs between 1960 and 2013. A randomized blocks design was used, with three replications and 40 black common bean cultivars. The following traits were evaluated: grain yield and appearance, plant architecture, number of pods per plant and seeds per pod and 1,000-seed weight. The genetic progress was estimated from the trait averages over the years, using bissegmented linear regression models that allowed the inference of the exact year in which the black common bean breeding began to present significant genetic progress. For grain yield, the genetic progress was observed from 1988, with an annual gain of 2.42 %. Improvements also occurred to grain appearance (1.85 %), plant architecture (1.35 %), number of pods per plant (2.36 %) and seeds per pod (2.24 %) and 1,000-seed weight (1.42 %), mainly after 1989.

RESUMO Normalmente, em experimentos de campo, pressupõe-se a independência entre erros, mas nem sempre esta condição é atendida, comprometendo os resultados obtidos. Uma escolha não apropriada do modelo de análise pode comprometer a eficiência do programa de melhoramento no sentido de os genótipos pouco promissores poderem ser selecionados e mantidos em próximos ciclos seletivos acarretando desperdício de tempo e recursos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a dependência espacial entre erros, em experimentos de avaliação de produtividade de grãos de progênies de feijoeiro, considerando análises em látice e em blocos casualizados. E também avaliar a eficiência de modelos geoestatísticos para caracterização da estrutura de variabilidade espacial entre erros. Os dados utilizados nesse estudo foram obtidos de experimentos instalados no delineamento látice e analisados como látice ou blocos casualizados. O teste de Durbin-Watson foi usado para verificar a presença de autocorrelação espacial. O semivariograma teórico foi ajustado por meio dos modelos geoestatísticos (exponencial, esférico e gaussiano) para descrever a variabilidade espacial dos erros. Aplicou-se o teste da razão de verossimilhança para verificar a significância dos parâmetros dos modelos geoestatísticos. Dos oito experimentos avaliados, cinco apresentaram dependência espacial moderada para análise em blocos e um para análise em látice e em blocos. O tamanho dos experimentos não foi fator determinante da dependência espacial. Os modelos geoestatísticos esférico, exponencial e gaussiano com efeito pepita foram adequados para representar a estrutura espacial na análise em blocos. A análise em látice foi eficiente para garantir a independência entre erros.

ABSTRACT In field experiments, it is often assumed that errors are statistically independent, but not always this condition is met, compromising the results. An inappropriate choice of the analytical model can compromise the efficiency of breeding programs in preventing unpromising genotypes from being selected and maintained in the next selection cycles resulting in waste of time and resources. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial dependence of errors in experiments evaluating grain yield of bean progenies using analyses in lattice and randomized blocks. And also evaluate the efficiency of geostatistical models to describe the structure of spatial variability of errors. The data used in this study derived from experiments arranged in the lattice design and analyzed as lattice or as randomized blocks. The Durbin-Watson test was used to verify the existence of spatial autocorrelation. The theoretical semivariogram was fitted using geostatistical models (exponential, spherical and Gaussian) to describe the spatial variability of errors. The likelihood ratio test was applied to assess the significance of the geostatistical model parameters. Of the eight experiments evaluated, five had moderate spatial dependence for the randomized blocks analysis and one for both analyses, in lattice and randomized blocks. The area of the experiments was not a determinant factor of the spatial dependence. The spherical, exponential and Gaussian geostatistical models with nugget effect were suitable to represent the spatial structure in the randomized block analysis. The analysis in lattice was efficient to ensure the independence of errors.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência da análise estatística espacial, em comparação a análises usuais em blocos ao acaso e em látice, na classificação de famílias de feijoeiro ( Phaseolus vulgaris), sob diferentes cenários de dependência espacial e de precisão experimental. Foram considerados 12 cenários, formados por quatro classes de dependência espacial entre erros (nula, baixa, média e alta) e três classes de precisão experimental (moderada, alta e muito alta). Para as três classes de precisão experimental, foram definidos os valores de acurácia seletiva de: 0,60, 0,80 e 0,95, respectivamente. Já as quatro classes de dependência espacial entre erros assumiram, respectivamente, os seguintes valores de alcance do modelo geoestatístico exponencial: 0, 10, 20 e 40 m. Para experimentos com precisão experimental muito alta ou ausência de dependência espacial, a eficiência da análise espacial para classificação de famílias do feijoeiro é semelhante à eficiência das análises usuais. Para experimentos com alta e, principalmente, com moderada precisão experimental, a análise espacial é mais eficiente que as análises usuais para classificação de famílias de feijoeiro, quando os erros apresentam dependência espacial.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of spatial statistical analysis, compared to the usual analyzes in randomized blocks and in lattice, for the classification of common bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris) families under different scenarios of spatial dependence and experimental precision. Twelve scenarios were considered, formed by four classes of spatial dependence between errors (null, low, medium, and high) and three classes of experimental precision (medium, high, and very high). For the three classes of experimental precision, the following values of selective accuracy were defined: 0.60, 0.80, and 0.95, respectively. The four classes of spatial dependence between errors assumed, respectively, the following range values for the exponential geostatistical model: 0, 10, 20, and 40 m. In experiments with very high experimental precision or with the absence of spatial dependence, the efficiency of the spatial analysis for the classification of common bean families is similar to that of the usual analyses. In experiments with high and, especially, with medium experimental precision, the spatial analysis is more efficient than the usual analyses for the classification of common bean families, when the errors show spatial dependence.

Resumo Nosso objetivo foi investigar a interação genótipos por ambiente (GxA) em cultivares de feijão do grupo carioca recomendadas por diferentes instituições de pesquisa do Brasil nos últimos 40 anos. Os experimentos foram realizados considerando 40 cultivares em quatro ambientes (Coimbra e Viçosa nas safras da seca e de inverno de 2013), usando um delineamento em blocos casualizados com três repetições. Os resultados mostraram o incremente efetivo na produtividade de grãos proporcionado pela recomendação de novas cultivares pelos programas de melhoramento de feijão do Brasil nas últimas quatro décadas. Além disso, a análise da GxA indicou que as cultivares recomendadas após o ano de 2005 foram as que apresentaram conjuntamente altas produtividades de grãos, ampla adaptabilidade e alta previsibilidade.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of genotype-environment interaction (GE) on common bean cultivars with carioca grain (cream-colored beans with light brown stripes), recommended for cultivation by different Brazilian research institutions in the last 40 years. The experiments were carried out with 40 cultivars in four different environments (Coimbra and Viçosa, in the dry and winter seasons of 2013) using a randomized block design with three replications. The results showed an effective increase in grain yield resulting from the use of new cultivars from different Brazilian breeding programs in the past four decades. In addition, the analysis of the GE interaction indicated that the cultivars recommended after 2005 combined high mean grain yield, wide adaptability and high or stability.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar o progresso genético de dois ciclos de seleção recorrente no melhoramento de feijão carioca e identificar famílias com potencial para gerar linhagens superiores. A população base, ciclo zero (C0), foi obtida pela combinação de 20 genitores de grãos tipo carioca, portadores de fenótipos favoráveis para vários caracteres de interesse agronômico. Os genitores foram recombinados em esquema de dialelo circulante, com cada genitor participando de dois cruzamentos, gerando 20 populações. Dessas populações, foram derivadas as famílias e avaliadas por três safras, nas gerações F2:3, F2:4 e F 2:5 . Os mesmos procedimentos de recombinação e avaliação do C0 foram realizados no ciclo um (CI). O progresso genético para produtividade, estimado com base na avaliação simultânea das 40 melhores famílias de cada ciclo, foi de 8,6%. Foram identificadas famílias com potencial para gerar linhagens superiores à cultivar Pérola, especialmente entre as famílias do CI.

Abstract The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic gain of two recurrent selection cycles in common bean breeding and identify families with the potential to generate superior lines. The base population, cycle zero (C0), was obtained by combining 20 carioca bean parents, populations with favorable phenotypes for several agronomically important traits. The parents were recombined in a circulant diallel scheme, in which each parent participated in two crosses, generating 20 populations. From these populations, families were derived and evaluated for three seasons in the generations F2:3, F2:4 and F2:5. The same procedures of recombination and evaluation in C0 were performed in cycle one (CI). The genetic gain for yield, estimated from the simultaneous evaluation of the 40 best families of each cycle, was 8.6%. Families with potential to generate superior lines to cultivar Pérola were identified, especially among the CI families.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar os parâmetros de adaptabilidade e estabilidade fenotípica e avaliar o incremento na produtividade de grãos em genótipos de feijão preto, desenvolvidos pelos programas brasileiros de melhoramento genético entre os anos de 1960 a 2013. Os experimentos foram realizados considerando 38 cultivares e duas linhagens em quatro ambientes (Coimbra e Viçosa nas safras da seca e de inverno de 2013), usando um delineamento em blocos casualizados com três repetições. Os resultados evidenciaram incremento efetivo na produtividade de grãos, proporcionado pela recomendação de novas cultivares pelos programas de melhoramento de feijão do Brasil nas últimas cinco décadas. Além disso, a análise da interação GxA indicou que as cultivares recomendadas após o ano de 2005 foram as que apresentaram conjuntamente altas produtividades de grãos, ampla adaptabilidade e alta previsibilidade de comportamento.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to study the parameters of adaptability and phenotypic stability and estimate the increase in grain yield in black common bean genotypes developed by brazilian breeding programs between the years 1960-2013. The experiments were carried out considering 38 cultivars and two lines in four different environments (Coimbra and Viçosa cities, and dry and winter seasons of 2013 year) by using a randomized block design with three replications. Results showed an effective increasing of the grain yield provided by the recommendation of new cultivars from different Brazilian breeding programs in the past five decades. In addition, the GxE analysis interaction indicated that cultivars recommended after the year 2005 were those with high average grain yield, wide adaptability and high predictability.

RESUMOO objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a consistência da predição, dos potenciais de populações de feijão quanto ao diâmetro do hipocótilo (DH) e à produtividade de grãos (PROD), em duas safras, pelas metodologias de Jinks & Pooni e das estimativas de m + a'e de d. Para isso, foram avaliadas 48 populações segregantes, nas safras de inverno de 2009 (gerações F2e F3, simultaneamente) e de seca de 2010 (gerações F3e F4, simultaneamente), além de 16 testemunhas. Pela metodologia de Jinks e Pooni, verificou-se que apenas quatro e duas populações foram coincidentes entre as 12 melhores nas duas safras, para DH e PROD, respectivamente. A correlação entre (inverno) x (seca) foi significativa e de magnitude razoável para os dois caracteres, enquanto, para (inverno) x (seca), foi inexpressiva, indicando maior influência dos efeitos ambientais nas estimativas de variância do que das médias. Constatou-se baixa correlação entre os pares m + a'(inverno) x m + a'(seca) e d(inverno) x d(seca) para ambos os caracteres, evidenciando que essas estimativas também sofrem grande efeito de ambientes. As populações mais promissoras, considerando-se o DH e a PROD, simultaneamente, foram IPR Uirapuru x L1, BRS Valente x VC6 e CNFC 9466 x VC6, pela metodologia de Jinks & Pooni e CNFC 9466 x L3, BRS Horizonte x VC6 e IPR Uirapuru x BRSMG Madrepérola, pelo método de m + a'e de d. Assim, essas metodologias são complementares na predição do potencial de populações segregantes de feijoeiro.

ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to verify the consistency in predicting the potential of common bean populations regarding the hypocotyl diameter (HD) and grain yield (GY) in two planting seasons applying the methodology of Jinks and Pooni and the estimates m+a'and d. A total of 48 segregating populations were evaluated in the 2009 winter season (generations F2and F3, simultaneously) and the 2010 dry season (generations F3and F4, simultaneously), besides16 controls. Based on the Jinks and Pooni methodology, it was verified that only four and two populations coincided among the twelve best in the two crops, for HD and GY, respectively. The correlation between (winter season) x (dry season) was significant and of reasonable magnitude for the two characters, but inexpressive for (winter season) x (dry season), indicating greater influence of the environmental effects on the variance estimates than on the mean estimates. A low correlation between the pairs m+a'(winter season) x m+a'(dry season) and d(winter season) x d(dry season) was verified for both characters, showing that these estimates are also highly influenced by the environment. The most promising populations, considering HD and GY, simultaneously, were IPR Uirapuru x L1, BRS Valente x VC6, and CNFC 9466 x VC6, according to the Jinks and Pooni methodology; and CNFC 9466 x L3, BRS Horizonte x VC6, and IPR Uirapuru x BRSMG Madreperola, by the estimates m+a'and d. Thus, these methodologies are complementary in predicting the potential of common bean segregating populations.
