Abstract In Michoacan, Mexico state, there are several causes of soil degradation and almost all of them of anthropic nature, which together affect 64.42 % of the land surface of the state. Several studies have shown that silvopastoral systems represent an agroforestry option that allows the production of assets such as meat, milk, and high quality wood, while at the same time contributing to maintaining the base of natural resources through the reduction of soil erosion, increase in carbon capture, recovery of biodiversity, diversification of production, reconversion of ecosystems with forest vocation and improvement of the hydrological behavior of the basins through agroforestry or silvopastoral systems. The objective of this study was to determine the potential areas for the establishment of silvopastoral systems with Pinus devoniana Lind. and Chloris gayana Kunth or Eragrostis curvula (Schrad.) Nees in temperate climate of Michoacán, Mexico. For the determination of the potential areas, a Geographical Information System was used, considering as inputs the agroecological conditions of altitude, precipitation, temperature, soil type and slope. Potential areas were determined, amounting to a total of 226,417 hectares; which represents 13.77 % of the regions with temperate climate in the state of Michoacán, mainly in the localities of Hidalgo, Tuxpan, Zitácuaro, Salvador Escalante, Ario de Rosales, Tingambato, Uruapan, Tancítaro, Nuevo Parangaricutiro, Peribán and Los Reyes.
