Pectis brevipedunculata is native species and widely available in dry and semi-arid ecosystems showing high biotechnological potential. The objective of this study was to evaluate the circadian and seasonal chemical variation of the essential oil (EO) of P. brevipedunculata, as well as its acaricide effect on Rhipicephalus microplus larvae. Aerial parts were collected and submitted to the hydrodistillation process, and the chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). For the assays with R. microplus, the larval immersion test was performed. The main constituents were citral (75% of the EO), followed by α-pinene and limonene. In the seasonality analysis, the highest yields were in the months of April (2.08%) and August (2.05%), while in the study of circadian rhythm, the percentage was 2.0% at 6 p.m. in the rainy season, and 1.2%, dry season at 6 p.m. Concerning acaricidal activity (50% lethal concentration (LC50)), the April (1.17 mg mL-1), March (1.28 mg mL-1), June (1.37 mg mL-1), and October (1.27 mg mL-1) oils obtained were the most active and assays performed with circadian rhythm revealed in the rain season (April) at 6 p.m. and dry season (September) at 12 a.m. LC50 values of 1.75 and 1.75 mg mL-1, respectively. Additionally, this EO is selective to non-target organisms, i.e., ladybeetles and lacewing.

Resumen La evaluación de la expresión del ligando 1 de muerte programada (PD-L1) es un criterio de elegibilidad para la inmunoterapia anti-PD-L1 en el carcinoma oral de células escamosas (COCE). También deben evaluarse otros componentes del microambiente tisular. Aquí se informaron cuatro casos de carcinoma de células escamosas orales. Se realizaron análisis histopatológicos del grado tumoral y TIL (infiltrado inflamatorio asociado a tumor) e inmunohistoquímica para CD4, CD8 y PD-L1. Los casos se clasificaron según el microambiente tisular en resistencia inmunitaria adaptativa, ignorancia inmunológica, tolerancia o inducción intrínseca. Este análisis destaca la importancia de comprender el microambiente inmunológico que puede presentar el COCE para la identificación de dianas terapéuticas más eficaces contra la enfermedad.
Abstract The evaluation of the expression of programmed cell death protein (PD-L1) is an eligibility criterion for anti-PD-L1 immunotherapy in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Other components of tissue microenvironment should also be evaluated. Here, four cases of oral squamous cells carcinoma were reported. Histopathological analysis of tumor grade and TILs and immunohistochemistry for CD4, CD8, and PD-L1 was done. The cases were classified according to the tissue microenvironment in adaptive immune resistance, immunological ignorance, tolerance, or intrinsic induction. This analysis highlights the importance of understanding the immunological microenvironment that the OSCC can present for the identification of more effective therapeutic targets against the disease.

The study aimed to assess the effect of different dietary levels of a probiotic blend (Probio Enzyme®) during the first 14 days of age (DOA) or up to 42 DOA, on growth performance, carcass and digestive tract traits, and haematological profiles of broiler chicks. A total of 540, one-day-old broiler chicks were randomized assigned to nine treatments: four dietary probiotic blend levels (250, 500, 750, and 1,000 g/ton) within two feeding periods (0-14 and 0-42 d, respectively), whereas the ninth treatment was a control diet without any dietary probiotic supplementation. The feed intake (FI) was found to be higher in broilers fed 1,000 g/ton of probiotic blend when fed during the first 14 d; however, BW gain and feed efficiency were not influenced by the treatments. Carcasses (deplumed and full) from broilers fed 250 g/ton of probiotic blend (0-14 DOA) were heavier than the other groups; the same was observed for leg portions. Broiler duodenum, jejunum and ileum weights, and ileum percentage were greater when fed diets without any supplementation. The haematological profile of broilers was not affected by the dietary treatments.

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites have attracted interest in photovoltaic applications due to their excellent optoelectronic properties and low-temperature processability. From 2009 to 2021, lab-scale perovskite solar cells (PSC) reached a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.7%, and a PCE of 17.9% for perovskite solar modules with an area of 800 cm2. Here, we present an investigation using three deposition techniques, spin-coating, blade-coating, and spray-coating, to process the charge transport layers and the active layer of perovskite solar cells onto 5 cm × 5 cm sized substrates, with device structure glass/fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)/c-TiO2/meso-TiO2+Perovskite/2,2’,7,7’-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenyl-amine)9,9’-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) or poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)/Au. Large-area PSC achieved an open-circuit voltage of around 1.1 V and PCE of 6%. The power generated was sufficient to start a fan. Furthermore, the connection in series of two large-area PSCs generated a voltage of 1.9 V. Then, we developed a simple method for manufacturing a monolithic perovskite mini-module containing two series-connected PSCs without using laser-scribing processes (usually named P1, P2, and P3 processes). This mini-module delivered a voltage of 1.52 V. Both voltages (1.9 and 1.52 V) were enough to turn on a red (or yellow) light-emitting diode (LED). To our knowledge, this is the first scientific report describing the assembly of a large-area n-i-p perovskite single cell and mini-module in Brazil.

Resumo Infecções do trato urinário são responsáveis pela maior parte das infecções humanas, sendo causadas por bactérias, fungos, protozoários, e por microrganismos associados. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a frequência de agentes causadores de infecções vaginais nos exames citológicos de rotina, bem como avaliar as características dos esfregaços positivos. Foi realizada uma pesquisa do tipo documental retrospectiva de aspecto descritivo, com abordagem quantitativa, em um Laboratório de Patologia Clínica de Maceió-AL. Nesse sentido, os resultados dos exames colpocitológicos para Trichomonas vaginalis, Gardnerella vaginalis, Candida spp e HPV foram organizados em um banco de dados, contendo os resultados para estes agentes, bem como a coinfecção bacteriana, protozoária, fúngica e viral. A amostra foi composta por 18.645 mulheres que realizaram exame colpocitológico, no período de 2013 a 2017. Destes exames analisados 27,4% em 2013, 10,9% em 2014, 10,6% em 2015, 15,2% em 2016 e 13,67% em 2017, estavam dentro do limite da normalidade, porém mais que a metade desses exames analisados apresentou algumas infecções causadas por agentes inespecíficos ou microbiológicos. Do total de laudos analisados, 4.073 (21,84%), apresentaram inflamações causadas por algum tipo de agente infeccioso, com a seguinte ordem de frequência: G. vaginalis, e T. vaginalis. Além disto, foi possível confirmar a elevada frequência de coinfecção entre G. vaginalis e Candida spp. Os índices de infecções genitais nesse trabalho mostram que há um problema de saúde pública que deve ser controlado, apontando uma necessidade maior de acompanhamento, orientações e de ações para uma maior conscientização para prevenir esses problemas.
Abstract Urinary tract infections are responsible for most human infections, these are caused by bacteria, fungi, protozoa and associated microorganisms. The goal of this study was to determine the rate of vaginal infection-causing agents in routine cytological exams and also to evaluate the characteristics of positive tested Pap smears. A retrospective documental with descriptive aspect research was performed in a Clinical Pathology laboratory from Maceió-AL. The results of the Pap smears exams for Trichomonas vaginalis, Gardnerella vaginalis, Candida spp and HPV were arranged in a database as well as other data such as bacterial, protozoan, fungal and viral coinfections. The sample was composed by 18.645 women who have undergone Pap smear exams from 2013 to 2017. Of these analyzed exams, 27.4% in 2013, 10.9% in 2014, 10.6% in 2015, 15.2% in 2016 and 13.67% in 2017 were within normal range, however more than half of these exams presented some infections caused by unspecific or microbiological agents. By analyzing all the reports, 4.073 (21.84%) presented inflammations caused by some species of infectious agent with the following rate order: G. vaginalis and T. vaginalis. Furthermore, it was possible to confirm high rates of coinfection by and Candida spp. The rate of genital infections in this study highlights that there is a public health matter that must be controlled, which points a greater need for monitoring, guidance and actions towards greater awareness in order to prevent these problems.

Abstract This paper discussed the synthesis of LTA zeolite from Pinheiro clay (PIN) aiming for adsorption of CO2. To obtain the LTA-PIN zeolite, the PIN was submitted to acid treatment, followed by calcination and hydrothermal treatment. These treatments promoted the reorganization of the crystalline structure of the PIN, leading to the LTA-PIN zeolite with 95.79% purity confirmed by XRD, SEM, XRF, and FTIR results. The performance of the LTA-PIN zeolite was similar to the one of the standard LTA zeolite. The CO2 adsorption by the zeolites could be properly described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm models, suggesting that physisorption was the main mechanism responsible for the deposition of CO2 at the surface of the zeolites. According to regeneration results, LTA-PIN zeolite can be reused five times without significant loss of CO2 adsorption capacity, contrary to the 12% reduction in CO2 adsorption capacity presented by the LTA-standard zeolite.

The objective of this work was to carry out a bibliographic survey of secondary metabolites isolated from the Velloziaceae family, creating a bank of compounds. After the bank was created, four prediction models for potentially active compounds against pathogenic microorganisms (Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella sp.) were obtained trying to identify which metabolites would be more active against the strains. Four sets of compounds with known activity for microorganisms were selected for the construction of predictive models from the CHEMBL database. Another bank with 163 unique molecules isolated from the Velloziaceae family was built. The Volsurf+ v.1.0.7 software obtained the molecular descriptors and Knime 3.5 generated the in silico model. The performances of the internal and external tests were also analyzed. The study contributed through the virtual screening of a bank of metabolites to select several compounds with potential antimicrobial activity, highlighting the biflavonoid amentoflavone which showed potential activity against the four strains.

RESUMO A melhor tomada de decisão é uma tarefa difícil no manejo florestal, pois envolve um grande número de variáveis de mercado e de produção. Simulou-se o crescimento e produção de Pinus taeda L. em sítios altamente produtivos, com objetivo de indicar regimes de desbaste e densidades de plantio que maximizam a produção de toras grossas (diâmetro da ponta fina >35 cm), bem como avaliá-los economicamente. O software OpTimber-LP para otimização de problemas florestais foi usado. As simulações envolveram quatro densidades de plantio (1.111; 1.600; 2.000; e 2.500 plantas/ha); três desbastes com diferentes pesos, frequências e idades de aplicação; e corte raso aos 25 anos. Essas combinações totalizaram em 2.916 regimes de manejo. VPLA foi calculado com variação de taxas de interesse e considerando custos de produção e retornos provenientes de desbastes e do corte raso. Os resultados indicaram maior produção de toras grossas em regimes com menores densidades de plantio. A intensidade de desbaste de 60% destacou-se por ter sido ideal para quase todos os processos, principalmente nas densidades de 2.000 e 2.500 plantas/ha. Essa intensidade também foi ideal para o primeiro desbaste, independentemente da densidade de plantas. A produção nos melhores regimes variou de 480 e 260 m3/ha, para as densidades de 1.111 e 2.500 plantas/ha, respectivamente. VPLA variou de ~1.300 a ~2.100 R$/ha. Como conclusão, regimes de manejo menos densos propiciaram maior produção de toras grossas, porém, menor em volume total; como consequência, o VPLA foi maior para os regimes mais densos, uma vez que a receita obtida pela produção de toras de alto valor não compensou a receita de toras mais finas (que também são mais baratas). Regimes com alta densidade podem fracassar com um único primeiro desbaste errado, enquanto regimes com menor densidade podem ter produção realmente prejudicada quando são sujeitos a consecutivos desbastes errados.
ABSTRACT The best decision-making is a difficult task in forest management because it involves a large number of market and production variables. We simulated the growth and yield of loblolly pine in high-quality sites, aiming to indicate thinning regimes and planting densities that maximize the production of large diameter logs (minor diameter >35 cm), as well as economically evaluating such regimes. We used the software OpTimber-LP for forest optimization problems. Simulations involved four planting densities (1,111; 1,600; 2,000; and 2,500 plants/ha); three thinnings with different weights, frequencies and ages of application; and clear cut at 25 years. Such combinations totalized in 2,916 simulated regimes. We computed ANPV assuming variations in interest rates, besides costs of production and returns resulting from thinnings and from clear cut. The findings indicated great productions of large diameter logs in regimes with low planting densities. Heavy thinnings (60% removal of trees) highlighted by being ideal to almost all regimes, mainly those ones with densities of 2,000 and 2,500 plants/ha. Heavy intensity also was ideal to the first thinning, regardless the planting density. The most productive regimes presented large diameter log volumes ranging from 480 to 260 m3/ha, for regimes with 1,111 and 2,500 plants/ha, respectively. ANPV ranged from ~1.300 to ~2.100 R$/ha. As conclusion, less dense regimes provide largest productions in large diameter log, but the lowest productions in total volume; as consequence, ANPV was larger in denser regimes, once the revenue obtained from high-value logs did not overcome that one obtained from finer (and consequently cheaper) logs. High-density regimes may produce less timber volume due to only one improper thinning, whereas low-density stands may have production really affected when are subjected to consecutive improper thinnings.

Synthesis and characterization of Mo2 C based materials over activated carbon derived from sewage sludge pyrolysis for catalytic applications

Resumo Carbetos de metais de transição vêm sendo aplicados com sucesso em substituição aos catalisadores convencionais principalmente devido às suas propriedades físico-químicas. A estrutura da superfície, composição química, interação metal-suporte e condições de processamento são essenciais na aplicação dos carbetos para esse fim. O presente estudo teve como objetivo sintetizar, em leito fixo, a partir de reação gás-sólido, carbeto de molibdênio puro, bimetálico (Mo-Ni) e suportado em carvão ativado obtido através da pirólise do lodo de esgoto, e compará-los visando aplicação em reações catalíticas. O carvão foi submetido a um processo de ativação química utilizando KOH e tratamento térmico. Os materiais foram caracterizados através das análises de TG, DRX, FRX, MEV, área superficial e volume de poros através do método BET e análise granulométrica. As isotermas de adsorção e dessorção foram também obtidas para os diferentes materiais. Os resultados mostraram que a metodologia utilizada para síntese dos materiais foi satisfatória, principalmente tendo em vista o aumento significativo da área superficial dos materiais, de 13 para 141 m2/g, quando o carvão foi tratado com KOH bem como quando o mesmo foi adicionado ao carbeto (de 45 para 73 m2/g), o qual pode justificar uma aplicação catalítica.
Abstract Transition metal carbides have been successfully used as substitute materials for conventional noble metal catalyst in several important industrial reactions due to their interesting physicochemical properties. Surface structure, chemical composition and metal-support interactions, as well as processing conditions, are of utmost importance in the use of such materials in catalysis. The present study aimed to synthesize and evaluate pure molybdenum carbide with and without support, and bimetallic Mo-Ni carbide over a carbon active support derived from sewage sludge pyrolysis. The support was chemically (KOH) and physically (thermal treatment) activated before use. TG/DTG, XRD, XRF, SEM, BET and particle size evaluation were performed, together with adsorption/desorption isotherms. Results indicated that the applied synthesis method was adequate for the obtainment of pure materials. The increase in surface area of the support was significant, from 13 to 141 m².g-1 after the thermal and chemical treatment; also, supporting Mo2C over carbon provided an increase from 45 to 73 m².g-1 in surface area, which indicated its potential as a catalytic material as well as the effectiveness of the applied methodology.

In view of its high economic value, cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) scientists are seeking technological innovations that increases production and improve quality of cacao beans. The objective of this study was to characterize the mineral (N, K, P, Ca, Mg, Si, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cd, Ba) composition of cacao beans of clone PH-16 grown in different soil types (Argisols, Cambisols and Latosols) and cropping systems (Cacao Cabruca, Cacao x Erythrina and Cacao x Rubber). With the exception of nitrogen, K was the mineral element most accumulated by cacao beans of PH-16 clone. Potassium, Ca, P and Mg mineral content of dry cacao beans were positively correlated with each other and showed similarity in clusters of average contents in relationship to the different cropping sites. Silicon content in cacao beans is proportionately close to the content of macronutrients. Variations in the content of Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd and Ba in cacao beans were related to the cropping sites because these mineral elements did not show any significant correlations with each other. Barium contents observed in this study correspond to levels of other micronutrients. In four sites, Cd content was higher than the limit set by the European Union.

Four new epimeric spirostanol and furostanol-type steroidal saponins, (25R,S)-5α-spirostan-2α,3β-diol 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-galactopyranoside, (25R,S)-5α-spirostan-2α,3β-diol 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-galactopyranoside, 26-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(25R,S)-5α-furost-20-ene,2α,3β-diol 3-O-β-D-galactopyranoside and 26-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(25R,S)-5α-furost-20-ene,2α,3β-diol 3-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-galactopyranoside, in addition to the known (25R,S)-5α-spirostan-2α,3β-diol 3-O-β-D-galactopyranoside, were isolated from Cestrum laevigatum. Compounds were submitted to cytotoxic activity assays using colorectal adenocarcinoma (HCT-116), human promyelocytic leukemia (HL-60), ovarian carcinoma (OVCAR-8), glioma (SF-295) human cancer cell lines, and the antimicrobial activity was evaluated against Candida parapsilosis, C. albicans, C. krusei, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi selecionar genótipos de capim-elefante com base na produção de matéria seca, utilizando a metodologia de modelos mistos (REML/BLUP). O experimento foi conduzido na Pesagro, RJ, Brasil. Foram obtidos 25 híbridos em esquema de dialelo parcial, 10 genitores e a cultivar Capim Cana D’África. Foram avaliadas as características largura da folha (LL), comprimento da folha (CF), diâmetro do colmo (DC) e número de perfilhos (NP) em seis semanas a partir da 5ª semana após o plantio. Na última semana foram avaliadas a porcentagem (%MS) e produção de matéria seca (PMS). Os componentes de variância e coeficientes de repetibilidade foram estimados pelo método da máxima verossimilhança restrita (REML) e a predição de valores genotípicos pela melhor predição linear não viciada (BLUP). Para análise das variáveis foi utilizado o software Selegen-REML/BLUP. Observou-se grande influência da variância ambiental na variância fenotípica para as características LL, CF, DC e NP. Foram obtidos valores de repetibilidade de média magnitude para a LL, CF e DC. Os genótipos que apresentaram potencial para maior produção de biomassa foram H16, H17, G, P1, H4, P4, H25 e H22.
The objective of this work was to select elephant grass genotypes based on dry matter production, using the mixed model methodology (REML/BLUP). The experiment was conducted at Pesagro, RJ, Brazil. Twenty five hybrids were obtained in partial diallel scheme, 10 parents and the cultivar Capim Cana D'Africa. We evaluated the characteristics sheet width (LL), leaf length (CF), stem diameter (DC) and number of tillers (NP) in six weeks from the fifth week after planting. The percentage (% MS) and dry matter production (PMS) was evaluated in the last week. The components of variance and repeatability coefficients were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood (REML) and the prediction of phenotypic and genotypic values for the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP). The Selegen-REML/BLUP software was used for analysis of the variables. There was great influence of environmental variance in phenotypic variance for traits, CF, DC and NP. Average magnitude of repeatability values were obtained for the LL, CF and DC. The genotypes that presented potential for greater production of biomass were H16, H17, G, P1, H4, P4, H25 and H22.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

This work presents the observed changes in Wistar rats under long treatment (thirteen weeks) with different oral doses of the ethanolic extract (EE) from Jatropha gossypiifolia L., Euphorbiaceae. The most significant toxic signs indicated a reduction of the activity in the central nervous system and digestive disturbances. The histopathological analysis shows hepatotoxity and pulmonary damages. The lethality was 46.6% among males under the higher experimental dose (405 mg/kg) and 13.3% both in females under the higher dose and among the animals treated with 135 mg/kg of the product. These data show the significant oral chronic toxicity of EE of J. gossypiifolia in rats.
