ABSTRACT The disorderly soil occupation without the necessary conservationist practices leads to impacts on the local hydrology and induces the pollution of water resources. This pollution may come from more urbanized areas due to the amount of pollutants drained during the rains. Even moderate precipitations constitute one of the main factors that define pollutant runoff on the surface. These rains have recently been called light rains. Light rains have a lower precipitation height and a higher frequency compared to classic rains of drainage projects, being necessary to define them according to patterns of rain frequency for each region. This study aimed to characterize light rain in the municipality of Piracicaba to establish statistical standards for the frequency of certain precipitation heights. A database provided by the ESALQ/USP automatic weather station, which provides precipitation measurements every 15 minutes, was used in the present study. Light rain heights reached 40.3, 41.4, and 42.7 mm for 100, 90, or 80% frequencies, respectively, which implies the use of return periods of 1.00, 1.11, and 1.25 years, respectively.

Thermal infrared enthalpimetry (TIE) was used for hypochlorite determination in commercial hypochlorite-based bleaching solutions. Experimental parameters were evaluated for the reaction with a hydrogen peroxide solution. The most relevant conditions were 5% H2O2 (m/m) solution, stirring speed of 250 rpm, dispensing rate of 0.57 mL s-1, and 10 s after reaction for the simultaneous temperature readings of four replicates. Agreement to reference method NBR 9425 ranging from 98.2 to 103.2% was achieved, with a low variation among measurements (relative standard deviation < 3.5%). The number of analytical operations was reduced, and only H2O2 solution was required as a greener reagent. A low amount of residues was generated (2.4 and 152.8 mL for each replicate in TIE and official method, respectively), and the application of the green analytical procedure index (GAPI) showed the greenness of the proposed method.

Abstract The Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) for oil spills was developed to assist coordinators to evaluate oil spill impact along shorelines and also to coordinate the allocation of resources during and after the incident, aiming to reduce environmental damage and consequences. Recently, Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems (RPAS) are being used in a wide range of areas, since they complement traditional remote sensing data (e.g., satellite images) and offer a rapidly, precise, detail and high-resolution images that fit well for environmental studies. Herein, the use of high-resolution RPAS images for ESI analysis of rocky shores in the Brazilian territory was performed. Using RPAS images, with their higher-resolution compared with ArcGIS Pro Basemap satellite images, increased the detailed of ESI analysis for oil spills, increasing the number of regions in the rocky shore that are more sensitive to oil spills. The RPAS images were able to decrease the number of areas that were less sensitive to oil spills, and increase areas that are more sensitive to oil spills. This increase is important, since they were not detected in the ESI analysis using conventional ArcGIS Pro Basemap satellite images. The RPAS images permit to delineate precisely rocky shores, improving ESI interpretation in rocky shores.

The present work evaluated the effect on charge transfer in functionalized TiO2 nanostructured systems using different binders. We highlight the conditions required to form self-assembled systems by varying the number of layers, as well as by substituting them for an organic binder, cysteine. Additionally, we study the pH effect of the precursor solution (HAuCl4) on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) formation. The morphological characterization allowed us to determine the percentage of Au atoms on the surface of the synthesized nanoparticles. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis determined the amount of gold deposited on the TiO2 surface, which ranged from 4.56 to 253.00 ng mm-2 depending on the system used. Based on Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman analysis, it was possible to propose a photolysis mechanism for AuNP formation in accordance with the change in the binders. The different systems were subjected to hydrogen photogeneration by a water splitting process, resulting in 2.02 µmol cm-2 of hydrogen production for cysteine binder [Cys+HAuCl4-2.7]. There proved to be an excellent synergy between the morphological aspects, crystallinity, and stability of this arrangement.

Content uniformity (CU) is a parameter used to ensure the uniformity of the amount of active substances in pharmaceutical preparations. It is often evaluated in the quality control of pharmaceutical dosage forms, and a novel method was proposed for CU determination using thermal infrared enthalpimetry (TIE). Captopril tablets were dissolved in 24-well microplates and the heat released from the reaction of captopril and I2 was monitored with an infrared camera. Some experimental parameters were adjusted, as captopril/I2 ratio, stirring speed and dispensing rate, and the most suitable conditions were 1.00:1.00 (v/v), 250 rpm and 0.57 mL s-1, respectively. Interferences from tablet adjuvants (e.g., starch, cellulose and lactose) were not observed. The results obtained by TIE did not differ statistically (Student’s t-test, p > 0.05) from those from official method (UV spectrophotometry) described in pharmacopeia. The TIE method required 31 and 12 times less reagent and time, respectively. Therefore, the proposed method was suitable for routine analysis and agrees with the requirements of green analytical chemistry.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: The levels of the full-length form of the (pro)renin receptor (PRR), a component of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), may be reduced in the membranes of kidneys in renal diseases. This study aimed to investigate the RAS components in the kidneys of mice submitted to a combination of a high-fat diet and Schistosoma mansoni infection. METHODS: Female BALB/c mice were maintained on a control or high-fat diet from 3 weeks of age. After 10 weeks on the designated diets, half the mice in each group were infected with S. mansoni cercariae. The blood and kidneys were harvested 8 weeks after infection. RESULTS: The high-fat diet increased the number of eggs in the feces and the number of adult worms in the mesenteric bed. Schistosoma mansoni infection reduced the plasma levels of glucose, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol in the control and high-fat diet groups. In mice on the control diet, S. mansoni infection resulted in increased expression of IL-6 in the kidneys; however, in mice on the high-fat diet, the levels of IL-6 were reduced and those of superoxide anions were increased. The RAS components evaluated were ACE2, renin, PRR, AT1R, and AT2R, and the levels of PRR were found to be reduced in the kidneys of infected mice on the high-fat diet. CONCLUSIONS: The finding regarding PRR is not yet clear. However, combining a high-fat diet and S. mansoni infection resulted in increased oxidative stress in the kidney that can aggravate hypertension as well as its associated complications.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the incidence of natural infection by agents of cattle tick fever (CTF), Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina in calves born in five farms within the semiarid region of Paraíba state, Brazil. In each farm, blood samples were collected from 6 to 14 calves every 14 days during the first 12 months of life of each animal. Blood samples were processed by microhematocrit and tested by PCR for detection of DNA of A. marginale, B. bovis and B. bigemina. In parallel, the tick infestations on animals were quantified in the five farms, as well as populations in horseflies in three farms. From a total of 41 calves monitored during the first year of life, 25 (61.0%) had positive PCR for A. marginale, 7 (17.1%) for B. bigemina and 3 (7.3%) to B. bovis. Incidence values for A. marginale infection ranged from 83.3% to 100% in four farms. Infection with B. bigemina in calves was detected at only two farms (incidence of 12.5% and 85.7%) and by B. bovis in just one (42.8% incidence). On one farm 14 calves remained negative for A. marginale, B. bigemina and B. bovis during the 12 month follow-up. PCR results were confirmed by DNA sequencing of amplified products. The presence of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus was found only in two farms in which there was infection by A. marginale, B. bigemina and B. bovis (the latter agent in only one of them). A total of 930 horseflies were captured in the study, most during periods of rain in the region; 70.7% of horseflies corresponded to Tabanus claripennis. There was significant association between a positive PCR for A. marginale and B. bigemina and lower hematocrit values. This study demonstrates that even evaluating only five rural properties, the incidence of CTF occurred heterogeneously in the region, confirming the status of enzootic instability area for CTF, previously reported for the semiarid region of Paraiba.

A method for determining low levels of As and Cd by dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was proposed. The following parameters that affect extraction efficiency were investigated: type and volume of extraction solvent (1000 µL acetone), type and volume of dispersive solvent (75 µL carbon tetrachloride), amount of ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate and sodium diethyldithiocarbamate as chelating agents, sample mass (0.5 g in 10 mL ultrapure water), pH of sample solution (2.0) and number of washing steps (one). Accuracy was evaluated by analytes determination in sugar samples by ICP-MS after digestion by microwave-induced combustion (MIC). No significant difference was observed between results of the proposed DLLME method and MIC in the case of both analytes. Instrument calibration was performed by the standard addition method and good linearity was achieved. Limits of quantification (LOQs) were 0.7 and 0.2 ng g-1 for As and Cd, respectively. The main advantages of this method are relatively high sample mass, low dilution, suitable preconcentration factors and significantly low LOQs (ng g-1 range). When the proposed method was used for determining As and Cd in four sugar samples, their concentrations ranged from 1.13 to 2.95 ng g-1 and from 0.31 to 0.43 ng g-1, respectively.

Abstract Chikungunya fever has become an important public health problem in countries where epidemics occur because half of the cases progress to chronic, persistent and debilitating arthritis. Literature data on specific therapies at the various phases of arthropathy caused by chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection are limited, lacking quality randomized trials assessing the efficacies of different therapies. There are a few studies on the treatment of musculoskeletal manifestations of chikungunya fever, but these studies have important methodological limitations. The data currently available preclude conclusions favorable or contrary to specific therapies, or an adequate comparison between the different drugs used. The objective of this study was to develop recommendations for the treatment of chikungunya fever in Brazil. A literature review was performed via evidence-based selection of articles in the databases Medline, SciELO, PubMed and Embase and conference proceedings abstracts, in addition to expert opinions to support decision-making in defining recommendations. The Delphi method was used to define the degrees of agreement in 2 face-to-face meetings and several online voting rounds. This study is part 2 of the Recommendations of the Brazilian Society of Rheumatology (Sociedade Brasileira de Reumatologia - SBR) for the Diagnosis and Treatment of chikungunya fever and specifically addresses treatment.

Abstract Chikungunya fever has become a relevant public health problem in countries where epidemics occur. Until 2013, only imported cases occurred in the Americas, but in October of that year, the first cases were reported in Saint Marin island in the Caribbean. The first autochthonous cases were confirmed in Brazil in September 2014; until epidemiological week 37 of 2016, 236,287 probable cases of infection with Chikungunya virus had been registered, 116,523 of which had serological confirmation. Environmental changes caused by humans, disorderly urban growth and an ever-increasing number of international travelers were described as the factors responsible for the emergence of large-scale epidemics. Clinically characterized by fever and joint pain in the acute stage, approximately half of patients progress to the chronic stage (beyond 3 months), which is accompanied by persistent and disabling pain. The aim of the present study was to formulate recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of Chikungunya fever in Brazil. A literature review was performed in the MEDLINE, SciELO and PubMed databases to ground the decisions for recommendations. The degree of concordance among experts was established through the Delphi method, involving 2 in-person meetings and several online voting rounds. In total, 25 recommendations were formulated and divided into 3 thematic groups: (1) clinical, laboratory and imaging diagnosis; (2) special situations; and (3) treatment. The first 2 themes are presented in part 1, and treatment is presented in part 2.

In this work, a method using microwave-induced combustion (MIC) was optimized in order to obtain a fast, simple, efficient and greener sample preparation method for coal digestion and further determination of sulfur by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). Accuracy was evaluated by comparison of the results with those obtained using elemental analysis by UV-fluorescence, microwave-assisted acid digestion with determination by ICP OES and by analysis of certified reference materials of coal. Some parameters that influence MIC method, such as the type and concentration of absorbing solution, the necessity of using a reflux step as well as the cooling time were carefully optimized. No statistical difference was observed for combustion without reflux followed by 5 min of cooling, in comparison to the reference values obtained by elemental analysis. Complete digestion was obtained with this fast and simple method (total digestion program required only 6 min) and using a diluted acid solution for quantitative recovery. The feasibility of digests for sulfur determination as sulfate by ion chromatography (IC) with conductivity detection was also demonstrated. The possibility of determining other elements, commonly monitored in coals, is another advantage of this high-efficiency digestion method (MIC) combined with the multielemental capacity of ICP OES or IC instruments.

PdCl2 immobilized in polyacrylamide (PAM), named Pd/PAM, produced at an extremely low cost, was found to be an efficient catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. Iodo- and bromoarenes may couple with phenylboronic acid under eco-friendly conditions (i.e., phosphine-free and with ethanol as the solvent) to give excellent product yields. Aryl chlorides, in contrast, were found to be unsuitable reagents in this context, yielding modest results. The recyclability of Pd/PAM is limited because of PdII leaching, which leaves only the base polymer on the surface after six runs. The Pd/PAM catalyst was initially prepared via the formation of a PAM hydrogel using an aqueous PdCl2 solution. After drying, the solid Pd/PAM was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES).

We herein described the preparation of a novel series of limonin derivatives (modification in A-ring), which was synthesized efficiently using methodology in solution as well as in heterogeneous medium (K-10). In addition, we obtained derivatives by inserting the 1,2,3-triazole nucleus via click reaction and also prepared derivatives from reactions with limonin-7-oxime. All compounds were submitted to investigation of the antimicrobial activity against a collection of microorganisms. The results of the antimicrobial activity, in general, demonstrated that a relevant number of synthetic derivatives presented higher activity than the natural product.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.
