The NixCu(1-x)Fe2O4 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.8, 1) mixed nickel and copper ferrites were synthesized using the EDTA-Citrate complexation method and calcined at 700°C. The structure, properties and characterization of the samples were analyzed by DRX, Rietveld refinement, SEM, and DRE UV-Vis, indicating the phase formation of tetragonal (CuFe2O4 and Ni0.2Cu0.8Fe2O4) and cubic (Ni0.8Cu0.2Fe2O4 and NiFe2O4). The materials exhibited morphologies suitable for photocatalytic applications and a UV-Vis absorption range near 2 eV as expected for spinel ferrites. These materials were evaluated as photocatalysts for the degradation of Rhodamine B dye under heterogeneous photocatalysis conditions, simulating solar light irradiation, air injection, and different pH levels (2, 6, and 10). The results showed that the catalytic efficiency was higher for samples with a higher copper content and in a basic medium. Therefore, NixCu(1-x)Fe2O4 mixed ferrites have promising potential as photocatalysts.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to select promising F2RC1 populations of saladette-type dwarf tomato plants for the development of breeding lines based on agronomic characteristics, fruit quality, and whitefly resistance. The experimental design was randomized blocks containing 13 treatments (10 F2RC1 populations of dwarf tomato plants, both parents, and a commercial hybrid) with four replicates. The evaluations were performed included weight, length, diameter, shape, pulp thickness, number of locules, soluble solids, β-carotene, and lycopene concentration of the fruit; plant internode length; acylsugars concentration; and number of whitefly eggs, nymphs, and adults on the leaflets. The data were analyzed using ANOVA, selection indices, and multivariate analysis. The first backcross increased the agronomic characteristics of the populations in relation to the donor parent, especially for fruit weight (169.1%), fruit length (26.1%), and fruit diameter (16.6%). The UFU SDi 7, UFU SDi 9, and UFU-SDi 17 populations were selected using two selection indices and were therefore considered promising.

Abstract Introduction: We investigated the clinical course and outcomes of patients submitted to cardiovascular surgery in Brazil and who had developed symptoms/signs of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the perioperative period. Methods: A retrospective multicenter study including 104 patients who were allocated in three groups according to time of positive real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2): group 1, patients who underwent cardiac surgery > 10 days after positive RT-PCR; group 2, patients with a positive RT-PCR within 10 days before or after surgery; group 3, patients who presented positive RT-PCR > 10 days after surgery. The primary outcome was mortality and secondary outcomes were postoperative complications, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, and postoperative days of hospitalization. Results: The three groups were similar with respect to age, the European System of Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation score, and comorbidities, except hypertension. Postoperative complications and death were significantly higher in groups 2 and 3 than in group 1, and no significant difference between groups 2 and 3 was seen. Group 2 showed a high prevalence of surgery performed as an urgent procedure. Although no significant differences were observed in ICU length of stay, total postoperative hospitalization time was significantly higher in group 3 than in groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: COVID-19 affecting the postoperative period of patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery is associated with a higher rate of morbidity and mortality. Delaying procedures in RT-PCR-positive patients may help reduce risks of perioperative complications and death.

Abstract The development of more efficient plants in the use of nutrients will be fundamental for agriculture in the coming years. The objective of this work was to define a physiological marker of the nutritional status of P for potato clones cultivated soilless and in vitro, in order to facilitate the selection process of more efficient clones in the use of P. For this, two experiments were carried out with seven potato clones (SMIC 148-A, Dakota Rose, SMINIA 793101-3, SMIB 106-7, SMIF 212-3, SMIJ 319-1 and P 150) grown at two levels of P (low and high) in the culture systems in vitro (1.935 and 19.346mg P L-1) and in soilless (2.32 and 23.2mg P L-1) using sand as substrate. The inorganic P content and the total accumulation of P in shoot and roots seem to be good indicators of the nutritional status of P in potato plants, both in soilless and in vitro cultivation. The activity of the acidic phosphatase enzymes (APases) in the tissues of the potato depends very much on the culture system, the clone and the organ of the analyzed plant, making it difficult to choose it as a physiological marker for restriction of P in potatoes. The dry mass of the potato plant may be a good indicator of the nutritional status of P in clones grown soilless.

Psychotria fractistipula L.B.Sm, R.M. Klein & Delprete (Rubiaceae) is found in the existing Atlantic Forest in the South of Brazil, in the Paraná and Santa Catarina States. The members of Rubiaceae are characterized chemically by the presence of alkaloids, some pharmacological properties of which include antifungal, antibacterial, analgesic, antioxidant, antimutagenic, and antiviral activities. In this study, we report the results of anatomical, morphological, and histochemical analyses of the leaves and stems of the Rubiaceae family member, P. fractistipula. The anatomical analysis involved of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Morpho-anatomical and histochemical characterization were made using standard methodology. The isolated compounds were identified by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopic analysis. The following structures are highlighted as the distinctive features of the species: presence of petiolate leaves and a petiole base, leaf blade with smooth cuticle on both surfaces, paracytic stomata, and, dorsiventral mesophyll and presence of trichomes on the leaves and stems. Phytosteroids, identified as β-sitosterol and campesterol, were observed in the hexane fraction of the stem. Future studies should focus on the isolation of other fractions of interest and their characterization through specific biological and cytotoxicity assays.

Abstract The filter cake from sugar cane processing is rich in organic matter and nutrients, which favors the proliferation of microorganisms with potential to deconstruct plant biomass. From the metagenomic data of this material, we assembled a draft genome that was phylogenetically related to Thermomonospora curvata DSM 43183, which shows the functional and ecological importance of this bacterium in the filter cake. Thermomonospora is a gram-positive bacterium that produces cellulases in compost, and it can survive temperatures of 60 ºC. We identified a complete set of biomass depolymerizing enzymes in the draft genome of Thermomonospora sp. CIT 1, such as α-amylase, catalase-peroxidases, β-mannanase, and arabinanase, demonstrating the potential of this bacterium to deconstruct the components of starch, lignin, and hemicellulose. In addition, the draft genome of Thermomonospora sp. CIT 1 contains 18 genes that do not share identity with five other species of Thermomonospora, suggesting that this bacterium has different genetic characteristics than those present in genomes reported so far for this genus. These findings add a new dimension to the current understanding of the functional profile of this microorganism that inhabits agro-industrial waste, which may boost new gene discoveries and be of importance for application in the production of bioethanol.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the Herbst appliance on the proclination and protrusion of the lower incisors, and to verify if the device causes alveolar bone loss in the anterior region of the mandible. This is a retrospective study. The sample consisted of 35 individuals. The treatment group consisted of 22 individuals (8 girls and 14 boys; initial mean age of 8.2 years) who used the Cantilever Herbst appliance for a period of 12 months. The control group consisted of 13 individuals (3 girls and 10 boys; initial mean age of 8.9 years) who received no treatment and were followed up for a period of approximately 18 months. Cone-beam computed tomography scans were performed at the beginning and at the end of the observational period. The medullary bone thickness (MT), buccal cortical bone thickness (BCT), lingual cortical bone thickness (LCT), and lower incisors proclination and protrusion were evaluated. Data were submitted to statistical analysis (ANCOVA and Student’s t-test) with a significance level of 5%. There was no significant difference in MT, BCT, LCT and incisor proclination between groups. Incisor proclination increased in the treated group with no statistical significance. The treatment group showed a significant increase in the protrusion of the incisors (p = 0.02). The Herbst appliance promoted a small proclination and protrusion of the lower incisors, without relevant clinical implications. The Herbst appliance did not cause bone loss in the anterior region of the mandible during Class II treatment.

This research to determine the minimum amount of testers was made to ensure the reliability of the sensory analysis of the coffee beverages. It were analyzed the scores assigned by three Q-grader who adopted the international rules from the Cup of Excellence (CoE) methodology. Based on descriptive statistics of the scores the testers assigned to eight sensorial characteristics of different samples for Red and Yellow Catuaí coffees, at the ripe coffee cherry produced in altitudes below and above 900 meters, it was concluded that the most important fact is not on the number of testers involved, but rather on the reliability of the scores they assign. Therefore, the reliability is a measure directly related to the homogeneity for the set of scores assigned by different testers, given the same condition for the evaluation.

Carbapenem-resistance mechanisms are a challenge in the treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. We investigated changes in P. aeruginosa carbapenem-resistance determinants over a time period of eight years after the emergence of São Paulo metallo-β-lactamase in a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) were screened for P. aeruginosa colonisation and followed for the occurrence of infections from April 2007 to April 2008. The ICU environment was also sampled. Isolates were typed using random amplified polymorphic DNA, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and multilocus sequence typing. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by disk diffusion and E-test, production of carbapenemases by a modified-CarbaNP test and presence of carbapenemase-encoding genes by polymerase chain reaction. Non-carbapenemase resistance mechanisms studied included efflux and AmpC overexpression by PAβN and cloxacillin susceptibility enhancement, respectively, as well as oprD mutations. From 472 P. aeruginosa clinical isolates (93 patients) and 17 isolates from the ICU environment, high genotypic diversity and several international clones were observed; one environment isolate belonged to the blaSPM-1 P. aeruginosa epidemic genotype. Among isolates from infections, 10 (29%) were carbapenem resistant: none produced carbapenemases, three exhibited all non-carbapenemase mechanisms studied, six presented a combination of two mechanisms, and one exclusively displayed oprD mutations. Carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa displayed a polyclonal profile after the SPM-1 epidemic genotype declined. This phenomenon is connected with blaSPM-1 P. aeruginosa replaced by other carbapenem-resistant pathogens.

ABSTRACT The Portulaca oleracea L. (Portulacaceae) is a cosmopolitan species with a wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant and neuroprotective actions. We investigated the effects of P. oleracea extracts in a 6-hydroxydopamine rat model of Parkinson's disease, a debilitating disorder without effective treatments. Chemical profiles of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of whole plant were analyzed by thin layer chromatography and the antioxidant activity was assessed by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhidrazila method. Male Wistar rats received intrastriatal 6-hydroxydopamine and were treated with vehicle or extracts (oral, 200 and 400 mg/kg) daily for two weeks. The behavioral open field test was conducted at days 1 and 15. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed 4 weeks after surgery to quantify tyrosine-hydroxylase cell counts in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Extracts presented antioxidant activity in concentrations above 300 µg/kg. The chromatographic analysis revealed the presence of Levodopa, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids and polysaccharides. Both extracts improved motor recovery 15 days after lesion and protected from tyrosine-hydroxylase cell loss after 4 weeks, but these effects were more evident for the aqueous extract. Because the dopamine precursor is present, in addition to antioxidant compounds and neuroprotective effects, P. oleracea can be considered as potential strategy for treating Parkinson's disease.

Abstract: The essential oils from leaves, stems and roots of Piper caldense were analyzed by GC-MS. The antibacterial potential of the oils was evaluated against gram-negative bacteria and gram-positive bacteria. The major chemical constituents that were identified from various parts of this plant were α-cardinal, α-muurolol, tujopsan-2-β-ol and δ-cadiene in the leaves, valencene, pentadecane, elina-3,7-11-dieno α-terpineol in the roots and terpine-4-ol, α-terpineol, α-cadinol 2-β-ol in the stems. Tissue oils showed antibacterial activity against the bacteria tested except for Enterococcus faecalis. This is the first report of the biological activity and chemical composition essential oil of P. caldense.
The study was conducted on a dairy farm in the municipality of Xambre, Northwest region of Parana, in the period from March 2011 to February 2012 to evaluate the yield and botanical composition of Tifton 85 with and without irrigation under nitrogen doses. The experimental plots were implanted in completely randomized blocks with and without irrigation and subplots through four nitrogen levels: 0, 20, 40 and 60 kg ha-1 per grazing cycle, with four replications. The yield in dry matter (DM) was higher under irrigation, responding linearly to increasing nitrogen fertilization. At a dose of 60 kg N ha-1 yields of 39279 and 27826 kg DM ha-1 were obtained, with and without irrigation, respectively. The leaf stem ratio was not affected by irrigation. The overall mean percentage of dead material with and without irrigation was equal to 13 and 17%, respectively.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

One of the main challenges in the development of new antimalarial drugs is to achieve a viable lead candidate with good pharmacokinetic properties. Curcumin has a broad range of biological activities, including antimalarial activity. Herein, we report the antimalarial activity of six curcumin derivatives (6-12) and an initial analysis of their pharmacokinetic properties. Five compounds have demonstrated potent activity against the P. falciparum in vitro (IC50 values ranging from 1.7 to 15.2 µg mL-1), with moderate or low cytotoxicity against the HeLa cell line. The substitution of the carbonyl group in 6 by a 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone group (to afford 11) increases the Selective Index. These preliminary results indicate curcumin derivatives as potential antimalarial compounds.
