Este estudo in vitro avaliou a influência de dois dispositivos para aplicação de força de cisalhamento em testes de resistência de união ao microcisalhamento e no padrão de fratura em dentina e esmalte de dentes decíduos. Oitenta molares decíduos foram selecionados e superficies planas em esmalte (40 dentes seccionados no sentido mésio-distal) e dentina (40 dentes seccionados transversalmente) foram obtidas. Ambas as superficies foram abrasionadas para padronização da lama dentinária. Dois sistemas adesivos de condicionamento ácido prévio (Adper Single Bond e XP Bond) foram utilizados. Tubos de polietileno foram colocados sobre as superficies, nas quais já haviam sido aplicados os sistemas adesivos, e preenchidos com resina composta. O teste de resistência de união ao microcisalhamento foi realizado após armazenamento dos espécimes em água (24 h/37 °C) utilizando dois dispositivos para a aplicação das forças de cisalhamento: cisalha côncava (Bisco Shear Bond Tester) e cisalha plana (Kratos Industrial Equipment). O padrão de fratura foi avaliado usando estereomicroscópio. Os dados de resistência de união foram submetidos à ANOVA e o teste quiquadrado foi utilizado para comparar a distribuição dos padrões de fratura (α=0,05). Não foram observadas diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre os grupos, tanto para a resistência de união a dentina e esmalte quanto para o padrão de fratura (p>0,05). O modo de falha predominante foi adesiva/mista. Em conclusão, os dispositivos para aplicação de força de cisalhamento não influenciam os valores de resistência de união, independente do sistema adesivo e substrato.

This in vitro study evaluated the influence of two devices for application of shear load in microshear tests on bond strength and fracture pattern of primary enamel and dentin. Eighty primary molars were selected and flat enamel (40 teeth sectioned mesio-distally) and dentin (40 teeth sectioned transversally) surfaces were obtained. Both surfaces were polished to standardize the smear layer. Two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive systems (Adper Single Bond and XP Bond) were used. Polyethylene tubes was placed over the bonded surfaces and filled with composite resin. The microshear testing was performed after storage in water (24 h/37 °C) using two devices for application of microshear loads: a notched rod (Bisco Shear Bond Tester) or a knife edge (Kratos Industrial Equipment). Failure modes were evaluated using a stereomicroscope. Bond strength data were subjected to ANOVA and chi-square test to compare the failure mode distributions (α=0.05). No significant differences were observed between the groups for dentin and enamel bond strength or fracture patterns (p>0.05). The predominant failure mode was adhesive/mixed. In conclusion, the devices for application of shear loads did not influence the bond strength values, regardless of adhesive system and substrate.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of application time on the resin-dentin bond strength (µTBS) and etching pattern of adhesive systems applied on sclerotic dentine. Material and Methods: A total of forty-two bovine incisors had their roots removed. The 1-step self-etch GO (SDI), the 2-step self-etch Adper SE Bond (3MESPE) and the 35% phosphoric acid (3MESPE) from the 2-step etch-and-rinse Adper Single Bond 2 (3MESPE) were applied on the bovine incisal surfaces according to the manufacturer's instructions or duplicating the recommended conditioning time. After adhesive application, thirty teeth were restored with composite resin, stored for 24 h in distilled water at 37°C, and sectioned into resin-dentin bonded sticks (0.8 mm 2 ) and tested according to the µTBS at 0.5 mm/min. The etching pattern of the remaining twelve teeth (n=4 for each material) was examined under scanning electron microscopy. Each tooth was divided into a buccal-to-lingual direction into three thirds, and each third randomly assigned to the groups: control (no treatment), according to the manufacturers' instructions and duplicating the recommended application time. The µTBS and the relative percentage of the tubule area opening were evaluated by two-way repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey's tests (α=0.05). Results: The duplication of the conditioning time favored only the GO adhesive (p<0.05). Both application methods significantly increased the tubule area opening (p<0.05) compared to the controls. Conclusions: The efficacy of duplicating the conditioning time was only effective for the 1-step self-etch adhesive system tested.

Objectives This study aimed to compare the micro-tensile bond strength of methacrylate resin systems to a silorane-based restorative system on dentin after 24 hours and six months water storage. Material and Methods The restorative systems Adper Single Bond 2/Filtek Z350 (ASB), Clearfil SE Bond/Z350 (CF), Adper SE Plus/Z350 (ASEP) and P90 Adhesive System/Filtek P90 (P90) were applied on flat dentin surfaces of 20 third molars (n=5). The restored teeth were sectioned perpendicularly to the bonding interface to obtain sticks (0.8 mm2) to be tested after 24 hours (24 h) and 6 months (6 m) of water storage, in a universal testing machine at 0.5 mm/min. The data was analyzed via two-way Analysis of Variance/Bonferroni post hoc tests at 5% global significance. Results Overall outcomes did not indicate a statistical difference for the resin systems (p=0.26) nor time (p=0.62). No interaction between material × time was detected (p=0.28). Mean standard-deviation in MPa at 24 h and 6 m were: ASB 31.38 (4.53) and 30.06 (1.95), CF 34.26 (3.47) and 32.75 (4.18), ASEP 29.54 (4.14) and 33.47 (2.47), P90 30.27 (2.03) and 31.34 (2.19). Conclusions The silorane-based system showed a similar performance to methacrylate-based materials on dentin. All systems were stable in terms of bond strength up to 6 month of water storage.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência da microestrutura e da composição de ligas básicas quanto à resistência de união (RU) a um agente cimentante resinoso. Foram usadas as seguintes ligas: Supreme Cast-V (SC), Tilite Star (TS), Wiron 99 (W9), VeraBond II (VBII), VeraBond (VB), Remanium (RM) and IPS d.SIGN 30 (IPS). Cinco padrões em cera (13 mm de diâmetro e 4 mm de altura) para cada uma das ligas básicas foram incluídos e fundidos em uma máquina de fundição. As amostras foram então embutidas em resina, polidas com lixas e jateadas. Após a limpeza das superfícies, seis cilindros de tygon tube (0,5 mm de altura e 0,75 mm de diâmetro) foram colocados sobre a superficie da liga e preenchida com cimento resinoso (Panavia F), o excesso foi removido antes da fotoativação. Após armazenagem (24 h/37ºC), cada amostra foi ensaiada por microcisalhamento a 0,5 mm/min. Os dados foram tratados por análise de variância para e medidas repetidas e teste Tukey (α=0,05). Para avaliar a microesturutura, as mesmas amostras foram polidas e condicionadas com solução específica. Os valores mais altos da RU (média/desvio padrão em MPa) foram encontrados para as ligas com estrutura dendrítica, formação eutética e precipitados: VB (30,6/1,7), TS (29,8/0,9), SC (30,6/1,7), com exceção da IPS (31,1/0,9) que apresentou alto valor de RU, mas sem formação eutética. As ligas W9 (28,1/1,5), VBII (25,9/2,0) and RM (25,9/0,9) apresentaram os menores valores de RU e ausência de formação eutética. Pode-se inferir que os valores mais elevados de resistência de união ao cimento resinoso fotoativado ocorre com as ligas que apresentam formação de eutético.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of microstructure and composition of basic alloys on their microshear bond strength (µSBS) to resin luting cement. The alloys used were: Supreme Cast-V (SC), Tilite Star (TS), Wiron 99 (W9), VeraBond II (VBII), VeraBond (VB), Remanium (RM) and IPS d.SIGN 30 (IPS). Five wax patterns (13mm in diameter and 4mm height) were invested, and cast in a centrifugal casting machine for each basic alloy. The specimens were embedded in resin, polished with a SiC paper and sandblasted. After cleaning the metal surfaces, six tygon tubes (0.5 mm height and 0.75 mm in diameter) were placed on each alloy surface, the resin cement (Panavia F) was inserted, and the excess was removed before light-curing. After storage (24 h/37°C), the specimens were subjected to µSBS testing (0.5 mm/min). The data were subjected to a one-way repeated measures analysis of variance and Turkey's test (α=0.05). After polishing, their microstructures were revealed with specific conditioners. The highest µSBS (mean/standard deviation in MPa) were observed in the alloys with dendritic structure, eutectic formation or precipitation: VB (30.6/1.7), TS (29.8/0.9), SC (30.6/1.7), with the exception of IPS (31.1/0.9) which showed high µSBS but no eutectic formation. The W9 (28.1/1.5), VBII (25.9/2.0) and RM (25.9/0.9) showed the lowest µSBS and no eutectic formation. It seems that alloys with eutectic formation provide the highest µSBS values when bonded to a light-cured resin luting cement.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the tensile strength, elongation, microhardness, microstructure and fracture pattern of various metal ceramic alloys cast under different casting conditions. Two Ni-Cr alloys, Co-Cr and Pd-Ag were used. The casting conditions were as follows: electromagnetic induction under argon atmosphere, vacuum, using blowtorch without atmosphere control. For each condition, 16 specimens, each measuring 25 mm long and 2.5 mm in diameter, were obtained. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (EL) tests were performed using a Kratos machine. Vickers Microhardness (VM), fracture mode and microstructure were analyzed by SEM. UTS, EL and VM data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA. For UTS, alloy composition had a direct influence on casting condition of alloys (Wiron 99 and Remanium CD), with higher values shown when cast with Flame/Air (p < 0.05). The factors 'alloy" and 'casting condition" influenced the EL and VM results, generally presenting opposite results, i.e., alloy with high elongation value had lower hardness (Wiron 99), and casting condition with the lowest EL values had the highest VM values (blowtorch). Both factors had significant influence on the properties evaluated, and prosthetic laboratories should select the appropriate casting method for each alloy composition to obtain the desired property.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar, por meio do DPPH, a atividade antioxidante de substâncias que poderiam ser propostas para reverter de imediato os problemas causados pelos procedimentos de clareamento. A porcentagem de atividade antioxidante (AA%) da solução de acido ascórbico 10% (AAcidS), gel de ácido ascórbico a 10% (AAcidG), solução de ascorbato de sódio 10% (SodAsS), gel de ascorbato de sódio 10% (SodAsG), bicarbonato de sódio 10% (Bicarb), Neutralize® (NE), Desensibilize® (DES), catalase C-40 10 mg/mL (CAT), solução alcoólica 10% de alfa-tocoferol (VitE), Listerine® (LIS), clorexidina 0,12% (CHX), CrotonLechleri (CL), solução aquosa 10% de Uncaria Tomentosa (UT), saliva artificial (ArtS) e fluoreto de sódio 0,05% (NaF) foi avaliada em triplicata pelo teste de radicais livres 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH). Todas as substâncias apresentaram atividade antioxidante, exceto a CL. AAcidS, AAcidG e VitE mostraram os maiores valores de AA% (p<0,05). Por outro lado, CHX, NE, LIS e NaF mostraram os valores mais baixos de AA% (p<0,05). Em conclusão, AAcidS, AAcidG, SodAsS, SodAsG e VitE apresentaram os mais altos valores de atividade antioxidante entre as substâncias testadas. O teste DPPH é um método rápido e fácil para avaliar o potencial antioxidante.

The aim of this study was to assess, using the DPPH assay, the antioxidant activity of several substances that could be proposed to immediately revert the problems caused by bleaching procedures. The percentage of antioxidant activity (AA%) of 10% ascorbic acid solution (AAcidS), 10% ascorbic acid gel (AAcidG), 10% sodium ascorbate solution (SodAsS), 10% sodium ascorbate gel (SodAsG), 10% sodium bicarbonate (Bicarb), Neutralize® (NE), Desensibilize® (DES), catalase C-40 at 10 mg/mL (CAT), 10% alcohol solution of alpha-tocopherol (VitE), Listerine® (LIS), 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX), Croton Lechleri (CL), 10 % aqueous solution of Uncaria Tomentosa (UT), artificial saliva (ArtS) and 0.05% sodium fluoride (NaF) was assessed in triplicate by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) free radical assay. All substances exhibited antioxidant activity, except for CL. AAcidS, AAcidG and VitE exhibited the highest AA% (p<0.05). On the contrary, CHX, NE, LIS and NaF showed the lowest AA% (p<0.05). In conclusion, AAcidS, AAcidG, SodAsS, SodAsG and VitE presented the highest antioxidant activity among substances tested in this study. The DPPH assay provides an easy and rapid way to evaluate potential antioxidants.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the pH over a period of 168 h and the ionic silver content in various concentrations and post-preparation times of aqueous silver nitrate solutions. Also, the possible effects of these factors on microleakage test in adhesive/resin restorations in primary and permanent teeth were evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A digital pHmeter was used for measuring the pH of the solutions prepared with three types of water (purified, deionized or distilled) and three brands of silver nitrate salt (Merck, Synth or Cennabras) at 0, 1, 2, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 168 h after preparation, and storage in transparent or dark bottles. Ionic silver was assayed according to the post-preparation times (2, 24, 48, 72, 96, 168 h) and concentrations (1, 5, 25, 50%) of solutions by atomic emission spectrometry. For each sample of each condition, three readings were obtained for calculating the mean value. Class V cavities were prepared with enamel margins on primary and permanent teeth and restored with the adhesive systems OptiBond FL or OptiBond SOLO Plus SE and the composite resin Filtek Z-250. After nail polish coverage, the permanent teeth were immersed in 25% or 50% AgNO3 solution and the primary teeth in 5% or 50% AgNO3 solutions for microleakage evaluation. ANOVA and the Tukey's test were used for data analyses (α=5%). RESULTS: The mean pH of the solutions ranged from neutral to alkaline (7.9±2.2 to 11.8±0.9). Mean ionic silver content differed depending on the concentration of the solution (4.75±0.5 to 293±15.3 ppm). In the microleakage test, significant difference was only observed for the adhesive system factor (p=0.000). CONCLUSIONS: Under the tested experimental conditions and based on the obtained results, it may be concluded that the aqueous AgNO3 solutions: have neutral/alkaline pH and service life of up to 168 h; the level of ionic silver is proportional to the concentration of the solution; even at 5% concentration, the solutions were capable of indicating loss of marginal seal in the composite restorations; the 3-step conventional adhesive system had better performance regarding microleakage in enamel on primary and permanent teeth.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of resin composite (Filtek Z250 and Filtek Flow Z350) and adhesive system [(Solobond Plus, Futurabond NR (VOCO) and Adper Single Bond (3M ESPE)] on the microtensile (μTBS) and microshear bond strength (μSBS) tests on enamel, and to correlate the bond strength means between them. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-six extracted human molars were sectioned to obtain two tooth halves: one for μTBS and the other one for μSBS. Adhesive systems and resin composites were applied to the enamel ground surfaces and light-cured. After storage (37(0)C/24 h) specimens were stressed (0.5 mm/min). Fracture modes were analyzed under scanning electron microscopy. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). RESULTS: The correlation between tests was estimated with Pearson's product-moment correlation statistics (α =0.05). For both tests only the main factor resin composite was statistically significant (p<0.05). The correlation test detected a positive (r=0.91) and significant (p=0.01) correlation between the tests. CONCLUSIONS: The results were more influenced by the resin type than by the adhesives. Both microbond tests seem to be positive and linearly correlated and can therefore lead to similar conclusions.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a therapeutic sealant to arrest non-cavitated proximal carious lesion progression. The study population comprised 44 adolescents who had bitewing radiographs taken for caries diagnosis. Non-cavitated lesions extending up to half of dentin thickness were included in the sample. In the experimental group (n = 33), the proximal caries-lesion surfaces were sealed with an adhesive (OptiBond Solo, Kerr) after tooth separation. The control group (n = 11) received no treatment, except for oral hygiene instructions including use of dental floss. Follow-up radiographs were taken after one year and were analyzed in comparison with baseline radiographs. In a blind study setting, visual readings were performed by two examiners, blinded to whether the examined radiograph was baseline or follow-up, and whether it concerned a test or control lesion. The efficacy of sealing treatment was evaluated by the McNemar test (0.05). About 22% of the sealed lesions showed reduction, 61% showed no change and 16% showed progression. For the control lesions, the corresponding values were 27%, 36% and 36% respectively. The number of lesions that showed reduction and no changes were merged and therefore 83.3% of the sealed lesions and 63.6% of the control lesions were considered clinically successful. No statistical significance was detected (p > 0.05). In the course of 1 year, sealing proximal caries lesions was not shown to be superior to lesion monitoring.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the bond strength and the morphology of enamel after application of self-etching adhesive systems with different acidities. The tested hypothesis was that the performance of the self-etching adhesive systems does not vary for the studied parameters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Composite resin (Filtek Z250) buildups were bonded to untreated (prophylaxis) and treated (bur-cut or SiC-paper) enamel surfaces of third molars after application of four self-etching and two etch-and-rinse adhesive systems (n=6/condition): Clearfil SE Bond (CSE); OptiBond Solo Plus Self-Etch (OP); AdheSe (AD); Tyrian Self Priming Etching (TY), Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus (SBMP) and Adper Single Bond (SB). After storage in water (24 h/37°C), the bonded specimens were sectioned into sticks with 0.8 mm² cross-sectional area and the microtensile bond strength was tested at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The mean bond strength values (MPa) were subjected to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). The etching patterns of the adhesive systems were also observed with a scanning electron microscope. RESULTS: The main factor adhesive system was statistically significant (p<0.05). The mean bond strength values (MPa) and standard deviations were: CSE (20.5±3.5), OP (11.3±2.3), AD (11.2±2.8), TY (11.1±3.0), SBMP (21.9±4.0) and SB (24.9±3.0). Different etching patterns were observed for the self-etching primers depending on the enamel treatment and the pH of the adhesive system. CONCLUSION: Although there is a tendency towards using adhesive systems with simplified application procedures, this may compromise the bonding performance of some systems to enamel, even when the prismless enamel is removed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the early and 12-month bond strength of two adhesive systems (Single Bond-SB and One Step-OS) applied to demineralized dentin (WH) and demineralized/NaOCl-treated dentin (H). Twenty flat dentin surfaces were exposed, etched, rinsed and slightly dried. For the H groups, a solution of 10% NaOCl was applied for 60 s, rinsed (15 s) and slightly dried. The adhesives were applied according to the manufacturer's instructions and composite resin crowns were incrementally constructed. After 24 h (water-37ºC), the specimens was sectioned in order to obtain resin-dentin sticks (0.8 mm²). The specimens were tested in microtensile (0.5 mm/min) immediately (IM) or after 12 months of water storage (12M). The data (MPa) were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey's test (a=0.05). Only the main factors adhesive and time were significant (p=0.004 and p=0.003, respectively). SB (42.3±9.1) showed higher bond strengths than OS (33.6±11.6). The mean bond strength for IM-group (42.5±8.7) was statistically superior to 12M (33.3±11.8). The use of 10% NaOCl, after acid etching, did not improve the immediate and the long-term resin-dentin bond strength.

Este estudo avaliou os efeitos de métodos para envelhecimento na microinfiltração de um sistema adesivo usado para selar superfícies oclusais. Após o condicionamento com ácido, as superfícies de 60 dentes permanentes foram contaminadas com 1 mL de plasma e seladas com OptiBond dual cure, ativado pelo Optilux 501, no modo rampa. A amostra foi dividida em oito grupos experimentais e um grupo controle ou imediato O envelhecimento dos espécimes foi realizado por 20 dias a 5, 37, 55 e 5-55°C (200 ciclos/dia) em contato com a água ou não. Após submeter os espécimes à técnica de infiltração com AgNO3, eles foram secionados duas vezes e os valores médios da penetração do corante foram tratados por análise de variância. Nenhum grupo apresentou vedamento hermético na interface, nem mesmo o grupo sem envelhecimento (imediato ou controle). O grupo que permaneceu a 5°C sem contato com a água mostrou o menor grau de penetração (p=0,015) e a interação envelhecimento x água foi significante (p=0,033). Os resultados levam às seguintes conclusões: 1) todos os grupos mostram microinfiltração, inclusive o controle; 2) o grupo mantido a 5ºC sem contato com a água mostrou os menores valores de microinfiltração; 3) em contato com a água, as variações térmicas parecem não afetar o grau de penetração do corante.

This study evaluated the effects of aging methods on the microleakage of an adhesive system used for sealing pit and fissure surfaces. After acid etching, the occlusal surfaces of 60 permanent teeth were contaminated with 1mL of human plasma and then sealed with OptiBond dual cure, activated in the ramp mode (Optilux 501). The sample was then divided into eight experimental and a control groups. Aging was performed for 20 days in 5, 37, 55 and 5-55ºC (200 cycles/day) under water contact or not. After subjecting the specimens to the AgNO3 technique, they were sectioned twice. Dye penetration was measured and the mean values were subjected to ANOVA. No group provided hermetic seal against dye penetration, even the control group (without treatment). Significant aging x water interaction effect (p=0.033) was observed. The group without water contact at 5ºC (p=0.015) showed the least dye penetration value. The results led to the main conclusions: 1) all groups showed dye penetration, even the control group; 2) storage teeth at 5ºC on dry condition provided the lowest degree of dye penetration; 3) in the presence of water, the temperature variations seem not to affect the microleakage values.

A redução da prevalência de cáries não ocorreu uniformemente para todas as superfícies dentárias. Como as superfícies oclusais ainda são as mais susceptíveis ao desenvolvimento de lesões, novos métodos de diagnóstico ainda estão sendo avaliados. Este estudo comparou um sistema de fluorescência a laser (DIAGNOdent - DD) com o método visual de Ekstrand na detecção de cárie oclusal. Um total de 57 terceiros molares com superfícies oclusais macroscopicamente intactas foram selecionados. Dois examinadores examinaram 110 sítios por inspecção visual (IV) e DD. Após dez dias da primeira mensuração, todos os dentes foram novamente avaliados pelos mesmos métodos. A extensão de cárie foi validada por exame histológico (40 X). Os dados foram analisados quanto a sensibilidade, especificidade, reprodutibilidade intra e interexaminador e área sob a curva ROC. O teste kappa demonstrou boa reprodutibilidade intra e interexaminadores para ambos os métodos. A IV e o DD apresentaram sensibilidade semelhante para ambos os examinadores, entretanto, a IV apresentou maior especificidade que o DD. A análise geral, através da área sob a curva ROC, mostrou que a IV teve um melhor desempenho que o DD. Concluiu-se que o critério visual proposto por Ekstrand é mais confiável para o diagnóstico de cáries oclusais. O DD deve ser considerado apenas como um coadjuvante no exame de cárie em superfícies oclusais.

The reduction in caries prevalence has not occurred uniformly for all dental surfaces. As the occlusal surfaces are still the most likely sites for the development of lesions, new methods of diagnosis are still being evaluated. This study compared a laser fluorescence (LF) system (DIAGNOdent) with the Ekstrand’s visual system for in vitro detection of occlusal caries. A total of 57 extracted molars with macroscopically intact occlusal surfaces were selected. Two-examiners assessed 110 sites by visual inspection (VI) and LF. After ten days from the first measurement, all teeth were re-evaluated through the same methods by each examiner. Caries extension was histologically assessed (X 40). The methods were compared by means of sensitivity, specificity, intra- and inter-examiner reproducibility and area under the ROC curve. The kappa’s test showed good intra- and inter-examiner reproducibility for both methods. VI and LF showed similar sensitivities for both examiners, however, VI showed higher specificities than LF. The overall analysis, as demonstrated by the area under the ROC curve, showed that VI had a better performance than the LF device. It was concluded that the Ekstrand’s visual system is more reliable than the LF device. LF should be considered only as an adjuvant for occlusal caries diagnosis.

OBJETIVO: A finalidade da presente investigação foi avaliar a influência das dimensões dos corpos-de-prova (cp) e da superfície de irradiação na resistência à flexão de uma resina composta (Heliomolar RO). MÉTODOS: As diversas dimensões adotadas - comprimento x largura x altura (mm) foram: 25x2x4; 25x2x2 (ISO 4049); 15x2x2; 10x2x2; 10x2x1. A fotoativação foi realizada por 40 segundos a 600mW/cm²; três vezes ao longo dos cp de 25mm, duas vezes ao longo dos cp de 15mm e uma vez nos cp de 10mm de comprimento. Os corpos-de-prova de todas as dimensões foram ativados em ambas as superfícies, ou apenas em uma; neste caso a carga de ruptura era aplicada na face de irradiação ou na oposta. RESULTADOS: Foi mostrado que a resistência à flexão não foi afetada pelo comprimento dos cp. Com a fotoativação em ambas as superfícies, as resistências obtidas eram semelhantes nos diversos comprimentos. Independentemente do número de faces irradiadas, os cp com 1mm de altura apresentaram resistências semelhantes. Contudo, cp com 4mm de altura e irradiados apenas por um lado, alcançaram os menores valores. CONCLUSÃO: Com o emprego de cp com dimensões menores são alcançados valores de resistência à flexão semelhante aos obtidos com cp padronizados (ISO 4049), com a vantagem de menor demanda de material e menor consumo de tempo (o menor comprimento dos cp requer apenas uma ativação por lado).

PUORPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of specimen dimensions on the flexural strength of a composite resin (Heliomolar RO). METHODS: The different dimensions tested - length x width x height (mm) were: 25x2x4; 25x2x2 (ISO 4049); 15x2x2; 10x2x2 and 10x2x1. Light-curing was performed at 600 mW/cm² for 40s, three times along the 25mm specimens, twice along 15mm specimen and once for the 10mm specimens. Specimens of all dimensions were light-cured on both surfaces, or only on one side. In the latter, the load was applied on the irradiated side or on the opposite one. RESULTS: It was shown that the flexural strength was not affected by specimen length. When light-curing was performed on both surfaces, similar flexural strength values were obtained for any dimension. Despite the number of irradiated surfaces, specimens with a height of 1mm also obtained similar values. On the contrary, specimens with a height of 4mm, exposed only on one surface, reached the lowest strength. CONCLUSION: The use of specimens with lower dimensions can lead to flexural strength values similar to the ones obtained with standardized specimen (ISO 4049), with the advantage of demanding less amount of material and being less time consuming.

O propósito deste estudo foi comparar dois sistemas adesivos (OptiBond FL TM e OptiBond SOLO TM) utilizados como material único para selar superfícies oclusais contaminadas com relação à infiltração marginal. Após condicionamento ácido, 56 dentes hígidos foram contaminados com 1 µl de plasma e aleatoriamente divididos em 8 grupos (n = 7). Os adesivos foram fotoativados por 30 s sob duas condições (Optilux VCL-403TM e VCL-500TM). Cada espécime foi exposto a um de dois tratamentos de envelhecimento: ciclos térmicos (4.000 x a 5-55°C por 60 s) mais ciclos mecânicos (225.000 x com carga de 83,3 N); ou ciclos térmicos, mecânicos e de pH (soluções mineralizante/desmineralizante). Os espécimes foram imersos em solução aquosa de AgNO3 a 50%, secionados, e a penetração do corante foi medida em imagem digitalizada. Usou-se ANOVA para determinar os principais efeitos dos fatores e suas interações. Os resultados indicaram diferença significante entre os adesivos (p < 0,05), sugerindo que o OptiBond FL TM apresenta um desempenho melhor com relação à microinfiltração e poderia ser indicado como material único para selamento em condições de umidade ou contaminação acidental.

The aim of this study was to compare two adhesive systems (OptiBond FL TM and OptiBond SOLO TM) used as a sole material for sealing pit and fissures on contaminated surfaces with respect to microleakage. After acid etching, 56 sound teeth were contaminated with 1 µl of plasma and randomly divided into 8 groups (n = 7). The adhesives were light activated under two conditions (Optilux VCL-403TM and VCL-500TM) for 30 s. Each specimen was exposed to one of the following aging treatments: thermal (4,000 X at 5-55°C for 60 s) plus load cycling (225,000 X with 83.3 N) or thermal plus load and pH cycling (mineralizing/demineralizing solutions). Then, they were immersed in a 50% AgNO3 aqueous solution, sectioned twice and had dye penetration measured through digitized images. ANOVA methods were used to assess the main effects of the factors as well as their interactions. The results indicated a significant difference between the adhesive systems (p < 0.05), suggesting that OptiBond FL TM has a better performance with respect to microleakage and could be used as a sealing material in accidentally moist or contaminated surfaces.
