ABSTRACT Turbulent flow is responsible for a significant portion of damages and failures in dams. This paper sought to introduce novel approaches to the estimation of typical parameters used in the design of stilling basins. The standard deviations of pressure samples of 24 hydraulic jumps were analysed throughout the stilling basin longitudinal centreline, and the positions of maximum pressure fluctuation were identified. Next, mean and extreme pressures occurring at this position were calculated. Finally, these parameters were plotted against the inflow Froude number and curves were adjusted to the data. The position where maximum turbulence of undular, weak and oscillating jumps occurs varies according to the Froude number. Steady and strong jumps are more likely to induce negative pressures on the stilling basin. The findings of this paper broaden the knowledge on which regions of the stilling basin must receive special attention, and on how to minimize the chances of damages.

RESUMO O escoamento turbulento é responsável por diversos danos e falhas nas barragens. Neste artigo, introduz-se uma abordagem para estimar parâmetros característicos do dimensionamento de bacias de dissipação. Os desvios padrão das amostras de pressão de 24 ressaltos hidráulicos foram analisados em todo o eixo longitudinal da bacia de dissipação, e as posições de flutuação de pressão máxima foram identificadas. Em seguida, foram calculadas as pressões médias e extremas que ocorrem nesta posição. Finalmente, estes parâmetros foram plotados em relação ao número de Froude incidente e foram ajustadas curvas aos dados. A posição onde ocorre a máxima turbulência de ressaltos ondulados, fracos e oscilantes varia de acordo com o número de Froude. Ressaltos firmes e fortes são mais propensos a gerarem pressões negativas na bacia de dissipação. As conclusões ampliam o conhecimento sobre quais regiões da bacia de dissipação devem receber atenção especial e como minimizar as chances de danos.

ABSTRACT Aerator systems promote additional insertion of air into the flow and can reduce the risk of cavitation and consequent damage to hydraulic structures. This work analyzes the hydrodynamic pressures on the steps of a physical model (with a chute inclination of 53.13º) subjected to different aeration conditions. When comparing the results with different air intake coefficients in the flow, it was concluded that the incorporation of air does not change in a generalized way all the statistical parameters associated with hydrodynamic pressures on the steps. However, with the insertion of air in the flow, there was an increase in the minimum pressure values measured in the region of the jet impact and downstream. Empirical equations for predicting the distribution of pressures on the steps under induced aeration conditions were proposed, valid for structures whose ratio between the height of the deflector and the height of the steps is equal to 0.167, with an aerator system installed at the beginning of the stepped chute.

RESUMO Sistemas aeradores promovem a inserção adicional de ar no escoamento e podem reduzir a chance de ocorrência de cavitação e consequentes danos nas estruturas hidráulicas. Este trabalho analisa as pressões hidrodinâmicas sobre os degraus de um modelo físico (com inclinação de calha de 53,13º) submetido a diferentes condições de aeração. Comparando-se os resultados com diferentes coeficientes de entrada de ar no escoamento, concluiu-se que a incorporação de ar não altera de forma generalizada todos os parâmetros estatísticos associados às pressões hidrodinâmicas sobre os degraus. Contudo, com a inserção de ar no escoamento, observou-se aumento nos valores mínimos de pressão medidos na região do impacto do jato e logo a jusante. Propõe-se equações empíricas para previsão da distribuição das pressões nos degraus nas condições de aeração induzida, válidas para estruturas cuja razão entre a altura do defletor e a altura dos degraus é igual a 0.167, com sistema aerador instalado no início da calha em degraus.

RESUMO Devido à possibilidade de danos em decorrência do fenômeno da cavitação, o projeto de vertedouros em degraus considera vazões específicas máximas de 15 a 30 m2/s, limite consideravelmente inferior ao praticado em calhas lisas. Aeradores promovem a inserção de ar no escoamento e podem viabilizar o incremento das vazões específicas. Este trabalho analisa as pressões sobre as faces verticais dos degraus e o coeficiente de entrada de ar no escoamento, através de estudo experimental em modelo físico de calha em degraus com ângulo de 53,13o, considerando a instalação de aerador em diferentes posições na calha. Comparando-se os resultados com a aeração natural, conclui-se que a instalação do aerador não altera a magnitude das pressões extremas mínimas na estrutura, mas antecipa o início da aeração no escoamento. Propõe-se nova equação para estimativa do coeficiente de entrada de ar no escoamento, bem como metodologia para previsão de pressões extremas nas faces verticais dos degraus, válidas no intervalo 3,0 ≤ Fr ≤ 6,0.

ABSTRACT The possibility of damage due to the phenomenon of cavitation leads the design of stepped spillways considering maximum specific discharges of 15 to 30 m2/s, a limit considerably lower than that practiced on smooth chutes. Aerators promote the insertion of air in the flow, allowing for the increase of specific flow rates. This work analyzes the pressures on the vertical faces of the steps and the air entrainment coefficient in the flow, through an experimental study in a physical model with a stepped chute angle of 53.13o, considering the installation of aerators in different places of the channel. Comparing the tested conditions with the natural aeration, it is concluded that the installation of the aerator does not change the magnitude of the minimum extreme hydrodynamic pressures, but anticipates the beginning of the flow aeration. A new equation is proposed to estimate the air entrainment coefficient, as well as a methodology for forecasting extreme pressures on the vertical faces of the steps, both valid in the range 3.0 ≤ Fr ≤ 6.0.

RESUMO Métodos simplificados são alternativas úteis para análise prévia dos efeitos da ruptura de barragens, podendo orientar a tomada de decisão da realização de estudos mais completos. Nesse contexto, propõe-se uma nova abordagem simplificada para análise de aspectos da ruptura de barragens de terra, cuja falha ocorre por galgamento, a partir da altura da barragem e do volume do reservatório como dados de entrada. Casos hipotéticos de ruptura foram analisados por meio de simulações hidrodinâmicas, cujos resultados permitiram desenvolver equações capazes de estimar o amortecimento da vazão de pico e o tempo de chegada da vazão máxima no vale a jusante. A abordagem proposta foi aplicada em estudo de caso hipotético (em uma barragem com 15 m de altura e 17 hm3 de volume no reservatório), obtendo-se resultados próximos dos alcançados por meio de outros metodos, especialmente na estimativa da vazão máxima no vale a jusante, onde as diferenças médias entre os resultados dos métodos considerados foram da ordem de 15%.

ABSTRACT Simplified methods are useful alternatives for prior analysis of the effects of dam rupture and can guide the decision-making process for carrying out more complete studies. In this context, a new simplified approach is presented, which enables the analysis of aspects from dam rupture of earthen dams that failed due to overtopping, considering dam height and reservoir volume as input data. Hypothetical cases were analyzed applying dam-break hydrodynamic simulations, which results allowed the development of equations capable of estimating peak flow attenuation and peak discharge arrival time along the downstream valley. The proposed approach was applied in a hypothetical case study (15 m high dam and 17 hm3 reservoir volume), obtaining results close to those achieved through other methods, especially in case of estimating the maximum discharges throughout the downstream valley, where the average differences between the results of the methods were of the order of 15%.

RESUMO Vertedouros em degraus têm sua operação limitada a faixas de vazões devido ao risco de ocorrência do fenômeno de cavitação e erosão em seus degraus. Como há demanda por vertedouros com possibilidade de extravasamento de maiores vazões, procura-se aumentar a concentração de ar do escoamento, que pode ocorrer através da instalação de pilares no vertedouro, para assim proteger a estrutura contra os referidos danos. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar as características do escoamento e as pressões extremas mínimas e máximas com probabilidade de 0,1% e 99,9% de não-excedência, atuantes nas quinas dos degraus do vertedouro com aeração induzida por pilares, através da análise experimental em um modelo físico. Baseado nos resultados obtidos foi definido o comportamento do escoamento e foram propostas equações de previsão das pressões extremas que ocorrem ao longo do vertedouro em degraus com aeração induzida por pilares.

ABSTRACT The operation of stepped spillways is limited by a range of discharges due to the risk of occurrence of the cavitation phenomenon and erosion on its steps. Since there is a demand for spillways with the possibility of overflow of greater discharges, the designs seek to increase the air concentration of the flow, which can occur through the installation of piers in the spillway in order to protect the structure from the above mentioned damage. The aim of this work is to analyze flow characteristics and extreme minimum and maximum pressures with non-exceedance probability of 0.1% and 99.9% acting next to the step edges of the spillway with aeration induced by piers through an experimental analysis in a physical model. Based on the results obtained, flow behavior was defined and equations for predicting the extreme pressures that occur along the stepped spillway with aeration induced by piers were proposed.

RESUMO O estudo teve por objetivo determinar a despesa com energia elétrica na lavagem de filtro rápido de uma estação de tratamento de água (ETA), cuja vazão é de 45 L/s. Para isso, foi realizado monitoramento hidroenergético para a análise do desempenho no bombeamento de água de lavagem. Adicionalmente, foi monitorada a qualidade da água do efluente de três lavagens no filtro 4 e realizado um levantamento das informações tarifárias de energia elétrica da unidade de tratamento. Com os resultados obtidos, observou-se que os valores de turbidez do efluente, ao final das três lavagens, no caso, 31, 30 e 27 UNT, não atingiram os limites mínimos recomendados na literatura técnica, que é de, pelo menos, 15 UNT. Foi observada também a dificuldade de prolongamento do tempo de lavagem, a fim de alcançar o padrão da literatura, pois o reservatório elevado (REL) de água de lavagem (água tratada), também alimenta a rede de distribuição, e poderia esvaziar completamente. Levando em conta essas limitações e a qualidade final do efluente de lavagem, observou-se que as lavagens devem ser finalizadas aos 380 segundos (6,3 minutos), tempo que consome um volume de 23,36 m3/lavagem. A despesa de água de lavagem foi calculada em 1,36 R$/m3, o que resultou no valor de 31,83 R$/lavagem. Para as lavagens de todos os filtros da estação, as despesas foram de 254,64 R$/dia, 7.639,20 R$/mês e 91.670,4 R$/ano. Esses valores são considerados elevados para o sistema de tratamento estudado.

ABSTRACT This paper aims to determine the cost of electricity for rapid filter backwashing procedures at water treatment plants, whose flow rate is 45 L/s. Flow and electricity consumption were monitored in order to analyze the performance of the pumping systems. Additionally, the effluent water quality of three washes was monitored in filter 4 and a survey of the electricity fare data of the treatment unit was carried out. With the results obtained, it was observed that the effluent turbidity values at the end of the three washes, in this case 31, 30, and 27 NTU, did not reach the minimum values recommended in the technical literature, which is at least 15 NTU. It was also observed the impossibility of prolonging the backwashing time in order to reach the standard of the literature, due to the double function of the elevated washing water reservoir (treated water), whose main purpose is to provide treated water to the water distribution network. Taking into account these limitations and the final quality of the wash effluent, it was observed that the duration of backwashing procedures should be around 380 seconds (6.3 minutes), consuming 23.36 m3/wash. The backwashing procedure cost was estimated at R$ 1.36/m3, which resulted in R$ 31.83/wash. Considering the whole filtration unit, the backwashing procedure cost was R$ 254.64/day, R$ 7,639.20/month, and R$ 91,670.4/year. This value can be classified as too expensive considering the treatment plant studied.

RESUMO Apesar da frequência com que ressaltos hidráulicos afogados ocorrem nas estruturas de extravasamento de barragens, são poucos os estudos que abrangem este tipo de fenômeno. Sendo o ressalto hidráulico acompanhado de impactos violentos e variações bruscas de velocidade e pressão, é importante que se conheça a região em que o fenômeno incidirá, a fim possibilitar um dimensionamento seguro e econômico. Neste trabalho, é proposta uma metodologia para a determinação da posição inicial do ressalto afogado ao longo da calha de um vertedouro do tipo Creager. Verificou-se que esta posição é função do número de Froude incidente e do grau de submergência imposto.

ABSTRACT Although sloping hydraulic jumps are frequent in energy dissipators, there are few studies regarding this type of phenomenon. Since the jump is accompanied by violent impacts and sudden variations of velocity and pressure, it is important to know the region where the phenomenon will occur, in order to make a safe and economic design possible. In this paper, a methodology for the determination of the start position of the sloping jump along a Creager spillway is introduced. It was verified that this position is a function of both the incident Froude number and the submergence factor.

RESUMO Vertedouros em degraus têm por objetivo dissipar, ao longo da calha, uma parcela da energia do escoamento. No entanto, a utilização dessas estruturas está limitada a uma restrita faixa de vazões específicas devido aos riscos de cavitação e erosão. Como a introdução de ar no escoamento permite a proteção do concreto contra os danos mencionados, uma possível solução por aeradores instalados ao longo da calha, já difundida para calhas lisas, está sendo estudada para ser utilizada também em vertedouros em degraus. A presente pesquisa tem o propósito de caracterizar um escoamento sobre vertedouros em degraus com aeração induzida por defletor e fornecimento de ar por uma câmara de ar através de ensaios realizados em um modelo físico reduzido. São apresentadas zonas e posições características do escoamento observadas durante os ensaios e também, quatro equações que permitem calcular, aproximadamente, a sua localização em um protótipo.

ABSTRACT Stepped spillways aim to dissipate part of the upstream energy during the flow passage by the chute. However, the use of these structures is limited to a restrict range of specific discharges due to the risk of cavitation damage. As the air entrainment into the flow assists the concrete protection against the aforementioned damages, a possible solution by aerators installed along the chute, already disseminated to smooth chutes, is being studied to be used also in stepped spillways. The purpose of the present paper is to characterize a flow over a stepped chute with induced aeration by deflector and air supply by an airtight chamber trough tests conducted on a reduced scale physical model. The main regions observed during the tests are presented and were developed four equations that allow to approximately predict the location of the main regions for a given spillway.

RESUMO Pressões extremas no ressalto hidráulico são associadas a riscos de danos no sistema extravasor de barragens por uma série de mecanismos. Assim sendo, o entendimento e a previsão destes esforços são cruciais para o dimensionamento seguro e econômico de sistemas extravasores. Este trabalho visa validar um método existente de previsão de pressões para a estimativa de pressões extremas em ressaltos hidráulicos com baixo número de Froude (abaixo de 4,5). Os resultados indicam que o método pode ser empregado para esta situação de forma preliminar. Recomenda-se que outros estudos sejam feitos para refinar a técnica e para que resultados mais precisos sejam obtidos.

ABSTRACT Extreme pressures in the hydraulic jump are associated with risk of damage to the flow discharge system of dams by a series of mechanisms. Therefore, understanding and predicting these efforts are crucial for the safe and economical design of discharge systems. Thus, this paper aims to validate an existing pressure forecasting methodology for estimating the extreme pressure in the hydraulic jump with low Froude number (below 4.5). Results have shown that the method may be used for this situation on a preliminary basis. Further studies are recommended to refine the technique and to achieve results that are more precise.

RESUMO A abordagem tradicional para a caracterização hidrodinâmica do escoamento sobre vertedouros em degraus é feita através da modelagem física, a qual é suscetível aos efeitos de escala e possui limitações relacionadas ao aparato experimental, espaço físico de laboratório e discretização espacial da obtenção de dados. A fluidodinâmica computacional é uma importante ferramenta de análise dos escoamentos, pois, se utilizada corretamente, apresenta grande potencial de aplicação na engenharia hidráulica. Neste trabalho, foi utilizada fluidodinâmica computacional para modelar o escoamento deslizante sobre turbilhões em um vertedouro em degraus. Buscou-se investigar os efeitos de possíveis erros de medição de pressão devido às incertezas na posição dos medidores dentro dos degraus. O modelo numérico foi validado através de dados de pressão obtidos experimentalmente e dados de velocidade encontrados na literatura. Os resultados mostram que os melhores valores de fração de água (α) que definem a superfície livre são α = 0,30 para a região não aerada e α = 0,10 para a região aerada. Utilizando-se dados experimentais, foram calculados parâmetros estatísticos para estimar pressões extremas. O uso destes parâmetros, em conjunto com os resultados das simulações, permite definir que as pressões extremas positivas ocorrem na região 0,81 < x/l < 0,98 nos patamares e as mínimas na região 0,93 < y/h < 0,98 nos espelhos.

ABSTRACT The traditional approach for the hydrodynamic characterization of the flow down stepped spillways is through physical modeling, which is susceptible to scale effects and has limitations related to experimental apparatus, laboratory space and the spatial discretization of data collection. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an important tool for hydrodynamic analysis because, if used properly, it presents great potential for application in hydraulics. In this work, CFD was used to model the skimming flow down a stepped spillway to investigate the effects of possible pressure measurement errors due to uncertainties in the position of the sensors within the steps. The numerical model was validated through literature velocity profiles and pressure experimental data. The results showed that the best values of water fraction (α) to define free surface are α = 0.30 in the nonaerated region and α = 0.10 in the aerated region. Statistical parameters were calculated using experimental data to estimate extreme pressures. These parameters and the simulation results were used to determine that the extreme maximum and minimum pressures occur, respectively, in the region of 0.81 < x/l < 0.98, in the horizontal faces, and in the region of 0.93 < y/h < 0.98, in the vertical faces.

RESUMO O vertedouro tipo salto esqui está presente em grandes barragens brasileiras. Após a operação desse tipo de vertedouro se origina uma fossa de erosão a jusante, que complementa o sistema de dissipação de energia, pois o jato é amortecido pelo colchão d’água. À medida que a escavação da fossa de erosão evolui, sua forma se altera, havendo a indução de diferentes comportamentos do fluxo do jato no interior do colchão d’água. A importância deste estudo científico se dá em virtude das fossas a jusante de vertedouros salto esqui estarem em constante transformação, o que pode ocasionar mudanças nos padrões de pressões dinâmicas causadas no fundo. Erosões imprevistas podem provocar a instabilidade dos taludes da fossa, comprometendo a fundação da barragem. Neste trabalho, foram realizados experimentos físicos, por modelagem seccional (2D), em dois modelos reduzidos de escalas 1:50 e 1:100, considerando dois estágios de profundidade de erosão em fundo sólido (fixo). Com isso, analisou-se o local de impacto do fluxo do jato sobre o leito, local este que possui a maior pressão dinâmica média. Como resultado foi possível identificar o efeito de escala no coeficiente de pressão entre os dois modelos ensaiados, o que possibilitou o ajuste de linhas de tendências que auxiliam a estimativa das pressões que ocorrem em protótipos, aumentando a segurança na operação de vertedouros salto esqui.

ABSTRACT The ski jump type spillway is present in large Brazilian dams. After the operation of this type of spillway, a scour hole is originated downstream of the spillway toe, complementing the energy dissipation system, because the jet is cushioned by the waterbed. As the excavation of the scour hole evolves, its shape changes, with the induction of different behaviors of the jet flow within the waterbed. The importance of this scientific study is due to the fact that scour holes downstream of ski jump spillways are in constant transformation, which can cause changes in the patterns of dynamic pressures caused on the bottom. Unexpected erosions can cause instability in the submerged slopes of the pit, jeopardizing the foundation of the dam. In this work it was proceeded physical experiments, by sectional modeling (2D), in two reduced models of 1:50 and 1:100 scales, considering two stages of erosion depths in solid bottom (fixed). It was analyzed the impact site of the jet flow on the bottom, which has the major mean dynamic pressure. As result, it was possible to identify the scale effect in the pressure coefficient between the two models tested, which allowed the adjustment of trend lines that aid to estimate the pressures that occur in prototypes, increasing safety in operation of ski jump spillways.

RESUMO Vertedouros em degraus vem sendo muito utilizados para escoamento de cheias devido às suas vantagens construtivas e em relação à dissipação de energia durante a queda, possibilitando que as estruturas de dissipação a jusante possam ser projetadas em menores dimensões. Devido a necessidade de estudos mais aprofundados sobre a ação do escoamento na calha de vertedouros em degraus e a análise dos adimensionais utilizados para caracterizar a distribuição longitudinal das pressões atuantes nas faces dos degraus de um vertedouro, o presente estudo objetiva a caracterização dos esforços atuantes nos degraus dos referidos vertedouros. Foram realizadas análises sobre um modelo físicos de vertedouro com declividade de 1V:0,75H e degraus de 6 centímetros de altura. Os campos de pressões nos degraus foram analisados e comparados com os resultados disponíveis na bibliografia. Como constatação geral sobre as pressões nos espelhos verificou-se que os esforços de tração e compressão têm magnitudes relativamente semelhantes, sendo mais intensas as pressões negativas. Sobre as pressões máximas nos patamares, destaca-se que os valores máximos de compressão ocorreram no final da calha, percebendo-se que as menores vazões geraram maiores valores de coeficientes de pressões.

ABSTRACT Stepped spillways have been widely used for flood runoff due to of their constructive advantages and in regards to energy dissipation during the drop, allowing downstream dissipation structures to be designed in smaller dimensions. Due to the need for further studies on the effect of runoff in the chute of the stepped spillway and the analysis of dimensionless numbers used to characterize the longitudinal distribution of the pressures acting on the faces of the steps of a spillway, this study aims to characterize the acting forces on the steps of said spillways. Analyses were performed on a physical model of spillway with a slope of 1V: 0.75H and steps with a height of 6 centimeters. The pressure fields on the steps were analyzed and compared with results found in literature. As a general finding concerning the pressure in the horizontal faces, it was ascertained that the traction and the compression loads have relatively similar magnitudes, the negative pressures being more intense. Regarding the maximum pressures at the horizontal faces of the steps, it should be emphasized that the maximum values of compression have occurred at the end of the chute and that the lower discharges yielded higher values of pressure coefficients.

RESUMO O sistema extravasor de uma barragem controla o nível d’água do reservatório com segurança. O projeto dessas estruturas deve prever os danos causados pela ação do escoamento turbulento a que está sujeito. A composição formada por vertedouro em degraus seguido por bacia de dissipação promove uma parte considerável da dissipação de energia na própria calha do vertedouro em degraus, mas não evita completamente o risco de danos na bacia. Neste trabalho, analisa-se a distribuição longitudinal das pressões extremas em uma bacia de dissipação a jusante de um vertedouro em degraus. O estudo foi realizado com base nos dados de pressões instantâneas obtidos em um modelo físico no Laboratório de Obras Hidráulicas do IPH/UFRGS. Assim, verificou-se um comportamento semelhante das pressões ao observado em estudos com vertedouros de calha lisa, exceto pela região junto ao pé do vertedouro em degraus, onde podem ocorrer grandes flutuações de pressões. O fato decorre do impacto do escoamento na estrutura de dissipação que não é observado a jusante de vertedouros de calha lisa devido à presença de uma curva de concordância vertical entre o vertedouro e a bacia de dissipação.

ABSTRACT The overflow system of a dam safely controls the water level of a reservoir. The design of these structures should predict the damage caused by the action of the turbulent flow to which they are subject to. The combination formed by a stepped spillway followed by a stilling basin promotes a considerable portion of the energy dissipation in the actual chute of the stepped spillway but it is not sufficient to completely avoid the risk of damaging the basin. In this paper, we analyze the longitudinal distribution of extreme pressures in a stilling basin downstream of a stepped spillway. The study was based on the instant pressure data from the tests carried out in a physical model in the Laboratório de Obras Hidráulicas in IPH/UFRGS. Thus, it was found that the pressure behavior is similar to that observed in studies involving smooth chute spillways, except in the area surrounding the base of the stepped spillway, where high pressure fluctuations may occur. This happens as a result of the impact caused by the flow in the dissipation structure, which is not observed downstream of smooth chute spillways due to the existence of a vertical concordance curve between the spillway and the stilling basin.

RESUMO As bombas centrífugas são amplamente utilizadas em sistemas de abastecimento de água e o seu funcionamento é responsável por mais de 90% do consumo de energia elétrica das estações de bombeamento de água. Estudos que busquem generalizar a caracterização das curvas de desempenho de bombas centrífugas são extremamente úteis. Realizou-se um estudo sobre as características adimensionais das condições de operação de bombas centrífugas para estimativas prévias de projetos de sistemas de abastecimento de água visando à eficiência energética. O trabalho consistiu na análise de curvas de desempenho de bombas centrífugas das quais foram extraídas informações sobre o ponto de máximo rendimento (PMR). As curvas e as equações obtidas foram adimensionalizados de modo que as informações pudessem ser extrapoladas para outras situações. Foi realizado um estudo de caso no Sistema de Abastecimento de Água do Campus do Vale da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) para demonstrar a aplicação das equações e curvas desenvolvidas. As equações adimensionais foram úteis para determinar qual vazão nominal deveria ser adotada para que o sistema fosse mais eficiente hidroenergeticamente e, também, para determinar quanto de energia seria consumida a mais caso o ponto de funcionamento da bomba fosse alterado por válvula de estrangulamento.

ABSTRACT Centrifugal pumps are widely used in water supply systems and account for more than 90% of the electricity consumption of water pumping stations. Studies that seek to generalize the characterization of performance curves of centrifugal pumps are extremely useful. A study was carried out on the dimensionless characteristics of the operating conditions of centrifugal pumps for preliminary design estimations of water supply systems aiming at energy efficiency. The research consisted of the analysis of performance curves of centrifugal pumps from which data was collected regarding the point of maximum yield (PMY). The curves and the equations obtained were made dimensionless so that the information could be extrapolated to other situations. A case study was conducted in the Water Supply System of Vale Campus of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) to demonstrate the application of those equations and curves developed. The dimensionless equations were useful to determine which discharge should be adopted so that the system would be more efficient hydro and energetically and, also, to determine how much more energy would be consumed in the case of alteration of the point of operation of the pump by a throttling valve.

RESUMO Este artigo trata da ação dos jatos formados em vertedouros tipo salto esqui sobre bacias de dissipação tipo fossa pré-escavada, dando especial ênfase às pressões hidrodinâmicas e sua caraterização junto ao fundo da bacia. Para estudar experimentalmente a ação dos jatos nas bacias de dissipação, utilizou-se de um modelo físico construído no Laboratório de Obras Hidráulicas do IPH/UFRGS com ensaios de diferentes vazões e cotas de fossas pré-escavadas. As pressões dinâmicas observadas no modelo físico foram comparadas com as calculadas por meio de metodologia teórica com a finalidade de avaliar a sua aplicação em projetos de engenharia, onde se observou grandes diferenças de magnitude da pressão quando em colchões rasos, e diferenças de distribuição de pressão ao longo do fundo da bacia de dissipação, principalmente quando em colchões profundos. No sentido de ajustar a metodologia aplicada, foi proposta a variação de parâmetros que regulam a forma do bulbo de pressões formado pelo jato e a aplicação de um coeficiente de amortecimento de pressões, sendo que assim foi possível melhorar significativamente a distribuição e a magnitude das pressões calculadas devidas à ação dos jatos no fundo da bacia de dissipação. Os resultados se mostram satisfatórios até determinada distância após o pico de pressão provocado pelo jato, porém após este ponto, os efeitos de ressalto hidráulico prevalecem e devem ser pesquisados em estudos futuros.

ABSTRACT This paper discusses the action of jets formed in ski jump spillways on pre-excavated stilling basins, with special emphasis on hydrodynamic pressures and their characterization in the bottom of the basin. Experimental trials were performed on a physical model built in the Hydraulic Works Laboratory of IPH (Institute of Hydraulic Research)/UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul), applying different flows and depths, to study the action of the jets in stilling basins. The dynamic pressures observed in the physical model were compared with those calculated by a theoretical model in order to evaluate its application in engineering projects. Large pressure magnitude differences were observed in shallow water beds, while differences in pressure distribution were observed along the stilling basin bottom, especially when in deep water beds. Changes in the values of the parameters that regulate the shape of the pressure bulb formed by the jet were proposed, in combination with the use of a pressure damping coefficient, allowing to significantly improve the distribution and magnitude of the pressures calculated due to the action of jets in the stilling basin bottom. The results were satisfactory until a certain distance after the peak pressure caused by the jet. After this point, the hydraulic jump effects prevail and should be investigated in future studies.
