ABSTRACT Migratory fishes have high ecological, social, and commercial value, and are strongly affected by river regulation. This study aimed to understand how migratory fishes use the longitudinal gradient, in an upstream to downstream direction of two free-flowing rivers and two reservoirs in a cascade within the Upper Grande River Basin, Brazil. The numeric abundance, biomass, richness, presence of fingerlings and juveniles, and the macroscopic gonadal maturation stage of migratory fishes were ascertained and evaluated bimonthly for two years. Recruitment in migratory fishes seems to rely completely on the free-flowing rivers upstream and their floodplains. Transition areas do not seem to have a significant role in recruitment. Resumo Investigamos os mecanismos envolvidos na relação entre mudanças de uso da terra e biodiversidade aquática, utilizando a ictiofauna de riachos do Cerrado como modelo de estudo. Testamos a predição de que a degradação da paisagem reduz a heterogeneidade ambiental e muda os tipos predominantes de habitat, por sua vez, diminuindo a diversidade e alterando a identidade funcional de comunidades de peixes. Amostramos 40 riachos da bacia do Alto Rio Paraná, e avaliamos as condições da drenagem e do habitat físico local. Em seguida, conduzimos uma análise ecomorfológica para caracterizar funcionalmente todas as espécies (36) e quantificar diferentes facetas da estrutura funcional das comunidades. Detectamos múltiplos caminhos de impacto das alterações da paisagem sobre a ictiofauna. A degradação das bacias de drenagem reduziu complexidade do leito e heterogeneidade no sombreamento pelo dossel, diminuindo especialização e divergência funcional das comunidades. Alterações na paisagem também reduziram volume de água e quantidade de pedras grandes nos riachos, resultando em diminuição na abundância de espécies de maior porte e com atributos morfológicos que favorecem a natação na coluna d’água. Concluímos que a intensificação dos usos da terra causa alterações significativas para a biodiversidade aquática no Cerrado, reforçando a necessidade de especial atenção a este hotspot global.

Abstract We investigated the mechanisms involved in the relationship between land-use changes and aquatic biodiversity, using stream fish assemblages of the Brazilian Savanna (i.e., Cerrado) as a study model. We tested the prediction that landscape degradation would decrease environmental heterogeneity and change predominant physical-habitat types, which in turn would decrease the functional diversity and alter the functional identity of fish assemblages. We sampled fish from 40 streams in the Upper Paraná River basin, and assessed catchment and instream conditions. We then conducted an ecomorphological analysis to functionally characterize all species (36) and quantify different facets of the functional structure of assemblages. We detected multiple pathways of the impacts from landscape changes on the fish assemblages. Catchment degradation reduced the stream-bed complexity and the heterogeneity of canopy shading, decreasing assemblage functional specialization and divergence. Landscape changes also reduced the water volume and the amount of large rocks in streams, resulting in decreased abundances of species with large bodies and with morphological traits that favor swimming in the water column. We conclude that land-use intensification caused significant changes in aquatic biodiversity in the Cerrado, reinforcing the need to pay special attention to this global hotspot.

Resumo Apesar da Amazônia possuir a maior biodiversidade de água doce do mundo, dados de desembarques urbanos mostram como a grande pressão da pesca é focada em apenas uma dúzia de espécies. Entretanto, caracterizar a pesca e entender as causas da seletividade das espécies é desafiador pela pesca artesanal, que pode capturar a maioria dos peixes da Amazônia, ser negligenciada. Registramos as capturas de 824 pescarias entrevistando pescadores artesanais em suas comunidades ribeirinhas. Usamos esses dados para caracterizar a pesca artesanal do rio Purus, o principal subsistema de origem do pescado para a maior cidade da Amazônia (Manaus), e investigamos os fatores que determinam a composição das capturas. Os pescadores capturaram 80 espécies de peixes, e apenas quatro representaram mais da metade da biomassa. Os mercados urbanos parecem direcionar maior seletividade, com diversidade de espécies significativamente menor nas capturas comerciais que nas de subsistência. A composição do pescado variou significativamente tanto sazonalmente quanto com o afastamento geográfico de Manaus. A substituição espacial na composição das capturas parece ser direcionada pelo acesso urbano, com espécies comercialmente importantes dominando onde os compradores de peixes de Manaus frequentam. Nossos dados podem explicar parcialmente a sobrepesca observada de algumas espécies comercialmente importantes, particularmente porque a maioria da população da Amazônia vive atualmente em áreas urbanas.

Abstract Despite Amazonia possessing the highest freshwater biodiversity on Earth, urban landing data show how huge fishing pressure is placed on only a dozen species. However, truly characterising the fishery and understanding the drivers of species selectivity is challenging, given the neglect of artisanal fishing activity, who may catch most of the Amazon’s fish. We register the catch of 824 fishing trips by interviewing artisanal fishers in their rural riverside communities. We use these data to characterise the artisanal fishery of the Rio Purus, the main fish source sub-system for the Amazon’s largest city (Manaus), and investigate the factors determining catch composition. Fishers caught 80 fish species, yet just four species made up over half of the harvested biomass. Urban markets appear to drive greater selectivity, with a significantly lower species diversity in commercial compared to subsistence catches. Fish catch composition varied significantly both seasonally and with geographical remoteness from Manaus. The spatial turnover in catch composition appears to be driven by urban access, with more commercially important species dominating where Manaus-based fish-buyers frequent. Our data may partially explain observed overfishing in some commercially important species, particularly as most Amazonians now live in urban areas.

Resumo A revista Neotropical Ichthyology lança o Volume Especial (SI) “Human impacts and the loss of Neotropical freshwater fish diversity” com o objetivo de publicar artigos científicos relevantes sobre a atual crise da biodiversidade e a perda de diversidade de peixes de água doce Neotropicais no Antropoceno. O SI é composto por 22 publicações, sendo dois artigos de revisão e 20 artigos originais. Um total de 107 pesquisadores contribuíram com esses artigos, envolvendo 44 instituições sediadas no Brasil e em seis outros países. Os artigos publicados investigaram as principais atividades antrópicas e seus impactos sobre a diversidade de peixes, com foco especial na regulação dos rios, mineração, mudanças no uso do solo, aquicultura e pesca. Os estudos forneceram evidências sobre a perda de diversidade de peixes na região Neotropical, incluindo eventos de mortandade, alterações demográficas, contaminação, mudanças na estrutura das assembleias, perda de diversidade taxonômica e funcional, além da degradação de funções e serviços ecossistêmicos, e falta de ações efetivas de proteção e conservação. Os estudos foram conduzidos em rios, riachos, lagos e reservatórios de diferentes sistemas Neotropicais. Os estudos publicados neste SI representam uma amostra relevante da atual situação dos peixes de água doce na região Neotropical, reforçando a necessidade de revisão das políticas ambientais, ações de manejo e conservação, e prioridades socioeconômicas.

Abstract Neotropical Ichthyology promotes the Special Issue (SI) “Human impacts and the loss of Neotropical freshwater fish diversity” with the purpose of publishing relevant scientific articles on the current biodiversity crisis and the loss of Neotropical freshwater fishes in the Anthropocene. The SI is composed of 22 publications, being two review articles and 20 original articles. A total of 107 researchers contributed to these papers, involving 44 institutions based in Brazil and six other countries. Published articles investigated main anthropic activities and their impacts on fish diversity, with special focus on river regulation, mining, land use changes, aquaculture, and fisheries. Studies provided evidence about the loss of fish diversity in the Neotropics, including fish kill events, demographic changes, contamination, changes in assemblage structure, loss of taxonomic and functional diversity, besides the degradation of ecosystem functions and services, and the lack of effective protection and conservation. Studies were conducted in rivers, streams, lakes, and reservoirs from different Neotropical systems. The studies published in this SI represent a relevant sample of the current worrisome situation of freshwater fishes in the Neotropical region and call for urgent revision in environmental policies, management and conservation initiatives, and socioeconomic priorities.

ABSTRACT The high diversity of freshwater fish species reflects a great morphological plasticity. Understanding the relationship between swimming capacity, morphology and habitat use may be important to predict the chances of finding a species at an anthropized environment. The swimming capacity and morphological aspects of two sympatric species of Characidium, and for which spatial segregation in different hydraulic habitats is known, were compared in this study. Twenty-one individuals of Characidium fasciatum Reinhardt, 1867 and 23 individuals of Characidium cf. zebra Eigenmann, 1909 were captured and used for the evaluation of the swimming capacity and ecomorphological attributes. The swimming capacity of each species was obtained by measuring critical and relative velocities. A total of 12 ecomorphological attributes correlated with habitat use and swimming characteristics were also compared. The Mann-Whitney mean test showed that the swimming capacity of C. fasciatum was greater than that of C. cf. zebra, and the standard length of the individuals explained 12.42% of the variation in their capacity to withstand water flow. Both species were morphologically distinct in the relative length of the caudal peduncle, ventral flattening index and the relative area of the pectoral fin. The relative area of the pectoral fin alone accounted for 16.71% of the differences in the ability to resist the water flow and which were not explained by body length. Our results showed that two species differed in the ecomorphological space and in their swimming capacity, supporting the hypothesis that the greater the hydrodynamism, the better a fish is able to withstand the water flow, and that this capacity is correlated with the morphological characteristics linked to the swimming activity of the fish.

Resumo: Os estudos sobre ecologia do ictioplâncton tornam-se essenciais quando se percebe a importância e influência deste componente na dinâmica, na conservação e na manutenção dos recursos pesqueiros. Porém, informações ecológicas desta natureza ainda são escassas e não têm sido devidamente valorizadas e utilizadas por gestores ambientais e tomadores de decisão. Neste ensaio apresentamos o estado da arte das pesquisas ictioplanctônicas na região Amazônica.O número de estudos vem aumentando com o decorrer do tempo, mas ainda são insuficientes e poucos abrangentes. Espera-se que esse trabalho sirva para valorizar o conhecimento e incentivar os estudos e pesquisas relacionadas ao ictioplâncton na região amazônica.

Abstract: Studies on ichthyoplankton ecology become essential when one realizes the importance and influence of this component in dynamics, conservation, and maintenance of fishery resources. However, ecological information about this subject is still scarce and has not been properly valued and used by environmental managers and decision-makers. In this study, we present the state of the art of research on ichthyoplankton in the Amazon region. The number of studies has been increasing over time but they are scarce and restricted. We hope this study may encourage research related to ichthyoplankton in the Amazon region.

ABSTRACT The trophic plasticity of most fish species of Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 in response to environmental changes and resource availability is high. This work evaluates the differences in the trophic characteristics of two congeneric species, Astyanax taeniatus (Jenyns, 1842) and Astyanax lacustris (Lütken, 1875), in Rio das Velhas Basin, which is highly impacted by the discharge of sewage from the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte (MRBH). Eight sites were sampled and grouped into three regions: upper course (two sites upstream of the MRBH); middle course (three sites located in the middle portion of the Rio das Velhas, region with greater influence of the MRBH), and lower course (three sites downstream of the MRBH). Samples of fish and food resources were collected from all sites to obtain the isotopic composition of nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C), and the stomach contents of the two species was analized. The most common items in the stomach of A. lacustris and A. taeniatus, respectively, were from plants and insects, followed by algae/periphyton (especially at the low course of Rio das Velhas). In contrast, stable isotope analyses indicated that algae (in polluted sites) and periphyton (in least-disturbed sites) were best assimilated both species. Both analyses indicated that the trophic niches of the two species overlap more in more polluted sites relative to less polluted sites. Astyanax taeniatus and A. lacustris only presented different isotopic composition of carbon and nitrogen in the upper course of the Rio das Velhas, probably in response to the greater diversity of food items consumed by each species. In the other regions, the species presented similar isotopic signatures, with δ15N and δ13C notably enriched in the most polluted regions (middle and low course). Our results suggest that pollution acts by increasing trophic niche overlap of these species, altering the type of resources most assimilated, and promoting a greater enrichment of δ15N in fish and resources.

RESUMO A simulação de habitat para espécies de peixes (PHABSIM) é uma etapa importante do método Instream Flow Incremental Methodology (IFIM), cuja aplicação está relacionada a determinação da vazão ecológica. O presente estudo aplicou PHABSIM em dois trechos da bacia do rio das Velhas, cujas vazões de médio prazo são semelhantes, mas sob condições de conservação ambiental diferente. Curvas de aptidão foram obtidas para Astyanax sp., Piabarchus stramineus, Piabina argentea e Serrapinnus heterodon através do método tradicional e ajustando modelo aditivos generalizados (Astyanax sp., P. argentea e S. heterodon). Os resultados sugerem uso de habitats diferentes dependendo do modelo utilizado para gerar as curvas. Aplicando as curvas obtidas pelo método tradicional no PHABSIM, diferentes cenários de vazão foram simulados. O aumento da vazão para cheia de um ano de retorno aumenta o habitat provável para todas as espécies. Entretanto, mesmo cenário de vazão, fornecido por análise de hidrológica de percentis de ocorrência, fornece diferente proporção de habitat em diferentes rios. O trabalho demonstra que curvas de aptidão para espécies neotropicais, independentemente da forma de geração, devem ser usadas com cautela. Entretanto, o método PHABSIM permite análises mais elaboradas do que as tradicionais estimativas de vazão mínima empregadas na América do Sul.

ABSTRACT Physical habitat simulation (PHABSIM) is an important step of the instream flow incremental methodology (IFIM), which is applied to establish environmental flow regimes. This study applied the PHABSIM in two reaches of the Velhas river basin, whose long-term discharges are similar but are under different degrees of impact. Suitability curves were obtained for fish species using traditional methods (Astyanax sp., Piabarchus stramineus, Piabina argentea and Serrapinnus heterodon) and generalized additive models for fish density (Astyanax sp., P. argentea and S. heterodon). The results of habitat use depended on the method for curves generation. Applying the suitability curves by traditional methods, different discharge scenarios were simulated. The flow increasing from a dry scenario to a discharge of 1 year of return promotes a possible habitat increase for all species. However, the same hydrological flow percentiles produce different habitat proportions in different rivers. This work demonstrates that regardless of how suitability curves for the Neotropical species are generated, caution should be taken when applying them. However, the PHABSIM method allows more complex analyses than the traditional approaches based on minimal flow estimations, which is usually applied in South America.

RESUMO A implantação de barragens tem perturbado e fragmentado os ecossistemas fluviais da América do Sul, afetando a migração dos peixes e dinâmicas de dispersão. Sistemas de transposição de peixes (STPs) têm sido instalados na tentativa de atenuar esses impactos. No entanto, pouco se sabe sobre a distribuição geográfica desses dispositivos, bem como o esforço de pesquisa aplicado para entender seu funcionamento e limitações. Nosso trabalho reuniu a literatura disponível com a finalidade de fornecer um panorama sobre os mecanismos investigados na América do Sul, bem como revelar o esforço e perfil das pesquisas. Encontramos 80 estudos que investigaram 25 STPs, a maioria escadas instaladas nos trechos superiores de grandes rios, particularmente na bacia do rio Paraná. Um resultado interessante é que a maior parte dos STPs está desconectada de trechos a montante e jusante devido à presença de outras barragens sem STPs. Embora o número de estudos tenha aumentado na última década, não registramos tendência consistente de incremento ao longo dos anos. No geral, os estudos abordam aspectos do próprio STP, especificamente a passagem ascendente, ignorando temas mais abrangentes (i.e. distribuição de habitats, dinâmica populacional). Além disso, o foco da pesquisa se direciona especialmente às questões de eficiência da passagem e raramente ao contexto da conservação e sucesso do manejo. Nossa avaliação, portanto, indicou que os estudos pretéritos são tecnicamente limitados, revelando importantes lacunas sobre o conhecimento dos STPs como medida de manejo.

ABSTRACT River regulation has fragmented fluvial ecosystems in South America, affecting fish migration and dispersion dynamics. In response, authorities have installed fish passage facilities (FPF) to mitigate impacts. However, little is known about the geographical distribution of these facilities, and no synthesis of the research effort applied to understanding their functioning and limitations exists. To address this issue, our study gathered the available scientific literature about fishways in South America to provide an overview of studied FPF and associated research effort. We found 80 studies that investigated 25 FPF, mostly ladders installed in the upper reaches of large rivers, particularly in the Paraná River Basin. One important finding is that most facilities do not lead to upstream and/or downstream sites due to the presence of other dams with no FPF. Though the number of studies has increased over the past 10 years, there is no consistent trend towards increased research effort. Overall, studies have focused on the fishway itself (i.e. upstream passage), and rarely evaluated broader issues (i.e. habitat distribution, population dynamics, conservation and management success). Our research therefore identified technical limitations of past studies, and revealed important gaps in the knowledge of FPF as a management tool.

RESUMO A implantação de transmissores em peixes pode ser afetada por diversos aspectos. Este estudo objetivou avaliar a influência do tamanho do transmissor, do tipo de anestésico e da experiência do cirurgião em parâmetros cirúrgicos e recuperação pós-cirúrgica do peixe neotropical Prochilodus lineatus . Foram marcados oitenta indivíduos com transmissores de telemetria, enquanto outros quarenta foram utilizados como controle. Quarenta indivíduos foram marcados com um transmissor pequeno e outros quarenta com um transmissor maior. Foram utilizados dois tipos de anestésico sendo quarenta indivíduos anestesiados por eletronarcose e outros 40 por eugenol e as cirurgias foram realizadas por dois grupos de cirurgiões, experientes e inexperientes com quarenta peixes em cada grupo. Dezessete peixes (21,3%) apresentaram impactos diretos resultantes da cirurgia como o óbito (1,3%), perda do transmissor (2,5%), migração da antena (2,5%) e infecções internas (15%). Estes efeitos estão ligados ao tamanho do transmissor utilizado. A experiência do cirurgião possui relação direta em três parâmetros cirúrgicos (tamanho da incisão, tempo de cirurgia e área de cicatrização). O tamanho dos transmissores utilizados possui relação com quatro parâmetros (tamanho da incisão cirúrgica, número de suturas utilizadas, tempo de cirurgia e área de cicatrização). O anestésico não teve relação com os parâmetros cirúrgicos. Os resultados indicam que tanto a dimensão dos transmissores quanto a experiência dos cirurgiões têm impacto direto no sucesso de implantação dos transmissores.

ABSTRACT Implantation of telemetry transmitters in fish can be affected by different parameters. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of type of anesthetic, tag size, and surgeon experience on surgical and postsurgical wound healing in the neotropical fish Prochilodus lineatus . In total, eighty fish were surgically implanted with telemetry transmitters and forty fish were kept as controls. Forty fish were implanted with a small tag and other forty were implanted with a large tag. Similarly, forty fish were anesthetized with eugenol and forty fish were anesthetized by electroanesthesia, and forty surgeries were performed by an expert surgeon and forty surgeries were performed by novice surgeons. At the end of the experimental period seventeen (21.3%) tagged fish had postsurgical complications, including death (1.3%), tag expulsion (2.5%), antenna migration (2.5%), and infection (15%). Tag size was the key determinant for postsurgical complications. Surgical details and postsurgical wound healing were not affected by type of anesthetic. Incision size, duration of surgery, and wound area were significantly affected by tag size and surgeon experience, and the number of sutures was significantly affected by tag size only. The results indicate that successful implantation of telemetry transmitters is dependent upon surgeon experience and tag size.

In the present study, we assessed the ecomorphology of two species of Astyanax in streams with different substrates found in the Rio São Francisco Basin. The dominant substrate of each stream was defined as either "fine" (0 to 2 mm), "gravel" (2 to 250 mm), "rock" (> 250 mm), or "leaf bank". We analyzed a total of 22 ecomorphological attributes of Astyanax intermedius Eigenmann, 1908 (127 individuals) and Astyanax rivularis (Lütken, 1875) (238 individuals) adults. We detected significant ecomorphological differences between the populations of A. rivularis and A. intermedius from habitats with different types of substrates. However, the two species did not show the same morphological differences depending on the type of substrate. These results confirmed the hypothesis that individuals from environments with different characteristics may have different ecomorphological patterns. Knowing that morphology is associated with habitat use and available resources, the loss of a resource or a modification in the environment may directly affect the permanence of a species, leading to a loss of morphologic diversity.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar os padrões local e regional de uso de habitat de Piabina argentea Reinhardt, 1867 em quatro diferentes rios da bacia do rio das Velhas. Os habitat amostrados foram caracterizados quanto à velocidade da água, profundidade e tipo de substrato. Para a análise ecomorfológica, foram calculados 17 atributos ecomorfológicos de 40 exemplares de cada rio. Embora estas populações tenham se sobreposto no espaço ecomorfológico, a Análise Discriminante Canônica mostrou haver diferença significativa entre elas, principalmente da população do rio das Velhas em relação às demais. A separação se deu em termos do índice de compressão, altura relativa do corpo e índice de achatamento ventral. Os padrões locais de seleção de habitat não foram congruentes em todos os rios, mas em geral, houve predomínio do padrão regional: habitat lênticos, profundidade entre 20 e 40 cm e 60 e 80 cm e substrato areia, silte+argila e banco de folhas. Considerando as características físicas de cada rio e o padrão regional da espécie, a maior parte dos seus requerimentos de habitat é contemplada nos quatro rios. Entretanto, um corpo d'água assoreado como o trecho do rio das Velhas, tende a ter maiores velocidades da água, menores profundidades e substrato finos, o que atende em parte à seleção de habitat da espécie estudada.

This study aimed to investigate the local and regional patterns of habitat use by piabina argentea reinhardt, 1867 in four different rivers from the velhas river basin. water velocity, depth and substrate were measured at each sampling site. ecomorphological analysis was performed using 17 ecomorphological attributes and 40 specimens from each river. although the populations overlapped in morphological space, canonical discriminant analysis showed that they were statistically different, mainly the population from the velhas river. the most important attributes in the analysis were compression index, relative body depth, and index of ventral flattening. the local patterns of habitat use were not similar between all rivers, but in general, the regional pattern was slow flowing habitat with 20 to 40 cm and 60 to 80 cm of depth and sand, silte+clay and leave banks as substrate. considering the physical characteristics of each river and the pattern of regional habitat use, a great amount of the species requirements was observed in the four rivers. nevertheless, a silted river like the velhas seems to have higher water velocity, shallower habitat and fine particle substrate, which fulfill most of the species habitat requirements.

A biota aquática da bacia do rio Paraná tem sido impactada por várias barragens. Este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar e comparar sazonalmente a alimentação dos peixes do rio Grande, à jusante da usina de Itutinga. Neste trecho de rio é esperada a redução do efeito sazonal devido à regulação do fluxo. A coleta foi realizada em janeiro e julho de 2010, com redes de emalhar e de arrasto. Os peixes foram fixados em formol e conservados em álcool para a análise dos conteúdos estomacais. A dieta foi caracterizada pelo índice alimentar (IA) e a guilda a que cada espécie pertence foi determinado pelo teste de χ². A alimentação de cada espécie e a ocorrência dos itens alimentares foram comparadas nos períodos de seca e chuva utilizando-se as análises de nMDS e SIMPER. Foram analisados 809 estômagos de 32 espécies de peixes categorizadas nas guildas piscívora, herbívora, iliófaga/detritívora, algívora, frugívora, invertívora e generalista, sendo esta a guilda de maior riqueza de espécies. O nMDS indicou menor diversificação na dieta em julho, quando foi observado um aumento na ocorrência de vegetal, invertebrados e sedimento. Este estudo ampliou o conhecimento dos hábitos alimentares dos peixes e o efeito do barramento local sobre a dieta das espécies em virtude da regularização do fluxo.

The aquatic biota of the Paraná river basin has been impacted by several dams. This study aimed characterize and compare seasonally the fish feeding of Grande river fish fauna, downstream from Itutinga Power Plant. In this river stretch it is expected the reduction of seasonal effects due to flow regulation. Data collection was conducted in January and July 2010 with gill nets and trawls. The fishes were fixed in formalin and preserved in alcohol for stomach contents analysis. The diet was characterized by Feeding Index (IA) and the guilds each species belongs was determined by the χ² test. The feeding of each species and the occurrence of food items were compared in periods of drought and rain using nMDS and SIMPER analysis. We analyzed 809 stomachs from 32 fish species categorized in piscivorous, herbivorous, ilyophagous/detritivorous, ilyophagous, algivorous, frugivorous, invertivorous and generalists guilds; the generalists had the highest species richness. The nMDS indicated lower diet diversification in July, when it was observed an increase of plant, invertebrate and sediment occurrences. However, differences in diet were lower than expected. This study expanded knowledge about fish feeding habits and local dam effects on species diet as a result of flow regulation.

In South America, one important symptom of the failure of fish passages to sustain fish migratory recruitment is the inability of eggs and larvae to reach the nurseries. This is especially so when the breeding areas are located upstream of a reservoir, and the floodplain is downstream of the dam. Therefore, the transport of fish larvae and eggs across reservoir barriers is a key factor in the development of effective conservation strategies. In this paper, we evaluate the potential for migratory fish larvae and egg transportation across a small size reservoir in eastern Brazil. We sampled fish daily between 15th October 2002 and 15th February 2003 (spawning period) in the Mucuri River, immediately upstream of the reservoir and downstream of the Santa Clara Power Plant dam. Our study was the first to indicate the possibility of successful larval passage through the reservoir of a hydroelectric reservoir and dam in South America, and showed that the passage of migratory fish larvae was associated significantly with residence time of water in the reservoir. The relatively short water residence time and elevated turbidity of the Santa Clara's reservoir waters during the rainy season certainly contributed to the successful passage, and can be considered as key factors for a priori evaluations of the feasibility of a downstream larval passage.

Very little research has been conducted on the swimming capacity of Neotropical fish. The few studies available have focused on large migratory species. The present study used fixed and increasing velocity tests to determine prolonged and sustained speeds of the "pequira", Bryconamericus stramineus Eigenmann, 1908, a small, abundant species found in fish passages implemented at the Paraná basin, Brazil. The results of increasing velocity tests showed significant relationships between critical speeds, total and standard lengths, and body weight. When compared with other Neotropical fish, the "pequira" is able to swim faster than individuals of other species of similar length. The point of change from sustained to prolonged swimming was found to occur at an approximate speed of 8.7 lengths per second. These data provide guidance and criteria for design and proper maintenance of structures such as fishways, fish screens and other systems that aim to facilitate or avoid upstream passages as part of management strategies.
