Abstract The surface urban heat island is one of the main causes for the decrease in bioclimatic comfort in areas with heterogeneous surface patterns, especially in the summer. The municipality of Porto has characteristics of land use and roofing materials provide thermal and radiative properties that are widely disseminated. The present study seeks to influence the coverage of land cover over land surface temperature using satellite images. As land surface temperature were extracted from the Landsat 8-OLI image, several spectral indices have been derived to identify the potential for evaporative cooling. Main results show that the "superficial urban heat island" are located mainly in the central core of the city of Porto and the main communication routes, where the effects of urban densification and the material covering properties used prevent evapotranspiration, favor the increase radiation absorption and, consecutively, a significant increase in land surface temperature. Highlights: Research article on the influence of the urban heat island in the municipality of Porto, in Portugal, based on remote sensing analysis (Landsat 8 image-OLI).

Quinones and organochalcogens are classes of compounds with great biological applicability, such as antioxidant, anticancer, anti-Alzheimer, and antidepressant activities, among others. Thus, the combination of these two classes of compounds is important to obtain new hits with biological activities that are additive or synergistic. Several methodologies for the preparation of this class of hybrid compound have been widely described. Many of the prepared hybrid molecules have shown increased biological activities and, in some cases, to act as two distinct pharmacophores. In this review, methods for the preparation of selenium-quinones, tellurium-quinones and their biological applications are highlighted.

Abstract Large-scale fluid flow in porous media demands intense computations and occurs in the most diverse applications, including groundwater flow and oil recovery. This article presents novel computational strategies applied to reservoir geomechanics. Advances are proposed for the efficient assembly of finite element matrices and the solution of linear systems using highly vectorized code in MATLAB. In the CPU version, element matrix assembly is performed using conventional vectorization procedures, based on two strategies: the explicit matrices, and the multidimensional products. Further assembly of the global sparse matrix is achieved using the native sparse function. For the GPU version, computation of the complete set of element matrices is performed with the same strategies as the CPU approach, using gpuArray structures and the native CUDA support provided by MATLAB Parallel Computing Toolbox. Solution of the resulting linear system in CPU and GPU versions is obtained with two strategies using a one-way approach: the native conjugate gradient solver (pcg), and the one provided by the Eigen library. A broad discussion is presented in a dedicated benchmark, where the different strategies using CPU and GPU are compared in processing time and memory requirements. These analyses present significant speedups over serial codes.

A novel method for the synthesis of nonsymmetrical 3,3’-(aryl/alkyl-methylene)bis-2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinones was developed by using the Mannich adduct of naphthoquinone and the reaction with another moiety of 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone. This novel method produces for the first time nonsymmetrical 3,3’-(aryl/alkyl-methylene)bis-2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinones. In a preliminary study, these compounds (15c, 15f and 15h) were evaluated regarding their effect over the viability of PC3 metastatic prostate cancer cell using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays at 100 µM. Three of these compounds presented relevant cytotoxic effects at 72 h posttreatment.

OBJECTIVES: Brazil has rapidly developed the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world. As such, proper symptom identification, including gastrointestinal manifestations, and relationship to health outcomes remains key. We aimed to assess the prevalence and impact of gastrointestinal symptoms associated with COVID-19 in a large quaternary referral center in South America. METHODS: This was a single-center cohort study in a COVID-19 specific hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. Consecutive adult patients with laboratory confirmed SARS-CoV-2 were included. Baseline patient history, presenting symptoms, laboratory results, and clinically relevant outcomes were recorded. Regression analyses were performed to determine significant predictors of the gastrointestinal manifestations of COVID-19 and hospitalization outcomes. RESULTS: Four-hundred patients with COVID-19 were included. Of these, 33.25% of patients reported ≥1 gastrointestinal symptom. Diarrhea was the most common gastrointestinal symptom (17.25%). Patients with gastrointestinal symptoms had higher rates of concomitant constitutional symptoms, notably fatigue and myalgia (p<0.05). Gastrointestinal symptoms were also more prevalent among patients on chronic immunosuppressants, ACE/ARB medications, and patient with chronic kidney disease (p<0.05). Laboratory results, length of hospitalization, ICU admission, ICU length of stay, need for mechanical ventilation, vasopressor support, and in-hospital mortality did not differ based upon gastrointestinal symptoms (p>0.05). Regression analyses showed older age [OR 1.04 (95% CI, 1.02-1.06)], male gender [OR 1.94 (95% CI, 1.12-3.36)], and immunosuppression [OR 2.60 (95% CI, 1.20-5.63)], were associated with increased mortality. CONCLUSION: Based upon this Brazilian study, gastrointestinal manifestations of COVID-19 are common but do not appear to impact clinically relevant hospitalization outcomes including the need for ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, or mortality.

Abstract Introduction: The urethral catheterization associated with the application of alfa- 2 adrenergic agonist drug is a recent development and application technique for the collection of feline semen, with advantages over electro-ejaculation harvesting and epididymal harvesting. Objetives: Seminal collection in neotropical felines using the urethral catheterization technique. Determine the testicular and seminal parameters of samples collected by the urethral cataterization technique. Methods: The technique has been tested on Panthera onca and others small cats. In this study, individuals of Panthera onca, Puma yagouaroundi and Leopardus wiedii were used in captivity at Getulio Vargas Zoobotanical Park, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Medetomidine hydrochloride (0.1 mg/kg) and ketamine (5.0 mg/kg) were used as sedatives, the semen was collected by urethral catheterization. In the process were checked the testicular biometry was performed with percutaner and ultrasonography technique. The fresh samples were evaluated for conventional microscopy in the parameters of volume, sperm vigor, total motility, progressive motility, structural and functional integrity of the plasmatic membrane and sperm morphology. The samples were subjected to a freeze - thaw process using three different extenders. The thawed samples were tested using conventional microscopy, automated system analysis and flow cytometry. Results: In this study, the urethral harvest technique was successfully used in the three species. In the literature used don’t have report about seminal parameters in P. yagouaroundi and urethral seminal collection in L. wiedii. The data presented describe the spermatic morphocinetics of the included species in a pioneer study. There were no differences (P > 0.05) in the seminal quality evaluating the extender, nor differences in the integrity of pre and post-freeze membranes of the samples. Conclusion: The urethral catheterization associated with the application of alfa- 2 adrenergic agonist drug it’s an efficient technique for semen collection in neotropical cats. The establishment of a potential association of physical characteristics with seminal quality is extremely important information on the applicability of reproductive traits in assisted reproduction programs.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

OBJECTIVES: Flexible poles can provide rapid eccentric and concentric muscle contractions. Muscle vibration is associated with a "tonic vibration reflex” that is stimulated by a sequence of rapid muscle stretching, activation of the muscle spindles and stimulation of a response that is similar to the myotatic reflex. Literature studies analyzing the acute cardiovascular responses to different exercises performed with this instrument are lacking. We investigated the acute effects of exercise with flexible poles on the heart period in healthy men. METHOD: The study was performed on ten young adult males between 18 and 25 years old. We evaluated the heart rate variability in the time and frequency domains. The subjects remained at rest for 10 min. After the rest period, the volunteers performed the exercises with the flexible poles. Immediately after the exercise protocol, the volunteers remained seated at rest for 30 min and their heart rate variability was analyzed. RESULTS: The pNN50 was reduced at 5-10 and 15-20 min after exercise compared to 25-30 min after exercise (p = 0.0019), the SDNN was increased at 25-30 min after exercise compared to at rest and 0-10 min after exercise (p = 0.0073) and the RMSSD was increased at 25-30 min after exercise compared to 5-15 min after exercise (p = 0.0043). The LF in absolute units was increased at 25-30 min after exercise compared to 5-20 min after exercise (p = 0.0184). CONCLUSION: A single bout of exercise with a flexible pole reduced the heart rate variability and parasympathetic recovery was observed approximately 30 min after exercise.

Nonlinear effects has been appointed as the main limitation in coherent optical fiber transmission. Digital Back-Propagation algorithms and Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation are two of the current studied methods to cope with such impairment and extend the systems maximum reach. In this article, we analyzed both methods in a 112 Gb/s Dual Polarization Quadrature Phase Shifting Keying (DP-QPSK) optical coherent system through simulations and experimental results. In order to reduce the huge required computational complexity, a modified back-propagation algorithm is also analyzed.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence and characteristics of SCIWORA in individuals under 16 years, from the area of a Level 1 Trauma Center between 1989 and 2009 after cervical trauma. METHODS: Retrospective study of clinical charts consultation. RESULTS: nine (10.5%) of 86 children had clinical features compatible with the radiological diagnosis of SCIWORA. The mean age was 10.7 years. The most frequent cause was traffic accident. Six individuals were classified as Frankel D. The remaining three cases were Frankel C. In three patients the MRI showed an image of lesion. Seven had intravenous methylprednisolone done and all remained with cervical collar immobilization until the first follow-up visit at 2 weeks. At discharge six patients who had Frankel D at entrance improved to a grade E. Of the patients with Frankel C at entry, one improved to Frankel D and the other two remained unchanged in Frankel C. CONCLUSION: In a level 1 Trauma Center SCIWORA represents nearly 10% of all spine injuries. neurological deficits at entry and MRI have prognostic value for recovery. High dosage corticosteroids is not formally indicated and there is no consensus as to how long cervical immobilization should be prescribed or its indication at all in SCIWORA patients.

The growth of sweet cherry cultivars Regina, Skeena and Sweetheart was evaluated when grafted onto the Edabriz rootstock and at four planting densities. The trial was set on March 2003 at four locations in the North and Centre of Portugal, with two replications in Caria, Vila Real and Alcongosta and three in Carrazedo de Montenegro. Within row spacing is approximately 5,0 m and plant spacing along the row is 0.7, 1.4, 2.1 and 2.8 m, corresponding to densities of 2600, 1300, 860 and 650 trees/ha, respectively. The trunk diameter of every plant was measured each year and trunk cross sectional area (TCSA) was calculated. At the end of the second leaf stage, significant differences in growth were already observable, concerning both trial location and plant density. The sweet cherry trees of the C. Montenegro trial grew 76, 36 and 9% more than those of Alcongosta, Vila Real and Caria, respectively, thus trial location accounted for 25% of the expected total variance. Plant density corresponded to 3% of the total variance, and the trees at 0.7 m grew 22% less than those the furthest apart. Results show that cultivars grew poorly when grafted onto this rootstock in Alcongosta and Vila Real. Therefore, in analogous situations, it is important to adjust water and nutrient supply to the specific requirements of the rootstock, so as to better manage vegetative growth and to prepare the trees for their major role: fruit yielding.

As espécies deanuros examinadas foram: Dendropsophus nanus, D. minutus, Leptodactylus chaquensis, L. podicipinus, L. labyrinthicus, L. fuscus, Bufo granulosus, B. schneideri, Phyllomedusahypocondrialis, Trachicephalus venulosus, Scinax fuscovarius e Hypsiboas albopunctatus.
Wild animals are exposed to numerous pathogens, including hemoparasites. The Trypanosoma and hemogregarinegroup are frequently reported as parasites in anurans (frogs, tree frogs and toads). The identification of these hemoparasites is usually made through stage observation of their morphology in the peripheral blood of the host. There areno studies, however, based on the biological cycle of these hemoparasites. The objective of the present study was toevaluate the presence of hemogregarines and Trypanosoma spp. in anurans captured in the States of São Paulo andMato Grosso do Sul- Brazil and to perform the morphological and morphometric characterization of these hemoparasites. The species of anurans examined were: Dendropsophus nanus, D. minutus, Leptodactylus chaquensis L. podicipinus, L. labyrinthicus, L. fuscus, Bufo granulosus, B. schneideri, Phyllomedusa hypocondrialis, Trachicephalus venulosus, Scinax fuscovarius and Hypsiboas albopunctatus. Of the total of 40 animals studied, four (10%)were positive for hemogregarines and eight (20%) were positive for Trypanosoma spp. Hemogregarine gamontsshowed variable morphology and, in addition to intraerythrocytic forms, extraerythrocytic forms were also observed.Extremely different forms of Trypanosoma were observed, as described in the literature, with the broad and oval forms being the most common.
