Abstract This study estimated the length–weight relationships of 16 fish species occurring close to the shores of sandy beaches along the lower Negro River basin, Brazilian Amazon. The specimens were captured for one day each month, in October to November 2016, early in the morning and early evening, using trawl net (20 m taken for standard length (SL – 0.1 cm precision) and total weight (TW – 0.01 g precision). The parameters a and b of the equation WT = a.LTb were estimated. The a values ranged from 0.0018 to 0.0226 and b values ranged from 2.5271 to 3.3244. This study also provides new data on of maximum lengths for six species, Amazonsprattus scintilla, Brycon pesu, Moenkhausia megalops, Pachyurus paucirastrus, Reganella depressa and Trachydoras microstomus, and new reports of the LWRs parameters of 15 fish species.

Abstract Background Clinical reports associate kidneys from female donors with worse prognostic in male recipients. Brain Death (BD) produces immunological and hemodynamic disorders that affect organ viability. Following BD, female rats are associated with increased renal inflammation interrelated with female sex hormone reduction. Here, the aim was to investigate the effects of sex on BD-induced Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) using an Isolated Perfused rat Kidney (IPK) model. Methods Wistar rats, females, and males (8 weeks old), were maintained for 4h after BD. A left nephrectomy was performed and the kidney was preserved in a cold saline solution (30 min). IPK was performed under normothermic temperature (37°C) for 90 min using WME as perfusion solution. AKI was assessed by morphological analyses, staining of complement system components and inflammatory cell markers, perfusion flow, and creatinine clearance. Results BD-male kidneys had decreased perfusion flow on IPK, a phenomenon that was not observed in the kidneys of BD-females (p< 0.0001). BD-male kidneys presented greater proximal (p= 0.0311) and distal tubule (p= 0.0029) necrosis. However, BD-female kidneys presented higher expression of eNOS (p= 0.0060) and greater upregulation of inflammatory mediators, iNOS (p= 0.0051), and Caspase-3 (p= 0.0099). In addition, both sexes had increased complement system formation (C5b-9) (p=0.0005), glomerular edema (p= 0.0003), and nNOS (p= 0.0051). Conclusion The present data revealed an important sex difference in renal perfusion in the IPK model, evidenced by a pronounced reduction in perfusate flow and low eNOS expression in the BD-male group. Nonetheless, the upregulation of genes related to the proinflammatory cascade suggests a progressive inflammatory process in BD-female kidneys.

Objectives: To test the association of 45 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with transition to psychiatric disorders in a cohort of individuals at ultrahigh risk (UHR) mental state for psychosis. Methods: Through general population screening, 88 non-help-seeking UHR subjects and 130 healthy control individuals were genotyped for 45 SNPs related to psychosis. They were followed for a mean of 2.5 years, and conversion to psychotic and to general psychiatric disorders was assessed. Genotype frequencies between controls, converters, and non-converters were analyzed. Results: There were no differences in sociodemographics between controls and UHR. Also, UHR converters and non-converters had no differences in their baseline symptoms scores. The dopamine receptor D2 gene (DRD2) SNP rs6277 was significantly more common among UHR who transitioned to psychosis (p < 0.001) and to UHR who transitioned to any psychiatric disorders (p = 0.001) when compared to UHR who did not transition. The rs6277 T allele was related to psychiatric morbidity in a dose-response fashion, being significantly more frequent in UHR converters than UHR non-converters and control subjects (p = 0.003). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that rs6277 could potentially constitute a genetic marker of transition to psychiatric disorders in subjects with at-risk mental states, warranting further investigation in larger samples.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: To highlight the importance of clinical simulations and simulated laboratories for student training, especially in physical examination teaching. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the gains obtained by medical students in their cognitive and practical performance of physical examinations (abdominal, cardiological, and pulmonary), as well as satisfaction and self-confidence in what they have learned, after concentrated practice developed in a skills and simulation laboratory. DESIGN AND SETTING: A quantitative and quasi-experimental study in which 48 students were evaluated at the Faculdade de Odontologia de Bauru, São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: A quantitative and descriptive study was conducted with regularly enrolled 2nd year medical students over 18 years of age who had content prior to data collection regarding anamnesis and physical examination remotely taught in a Moodle virtual learning environment. For data collection, the participants were subjected to a concentrated period of skill training (abdominal, cardiological, and pulmonary). Every day after the skill training session, they were subjected to a practical evaluation and completed a theoretical test before and after the practical activities. At the end of all activities, they answered the instrument to assess the simulated practices (self-confidence and satisfaction). RESULTS: Among the 49 students evaluated, positive and significant theoretical and practical gains were identified in all three components (abdominal, cardiological, and pulmonary) (P = 0.000), as well as in the general evaluation (Theoretical 1 and Theoretical 2) (P = 0.000), satisfaction, and self-confidence (P = 0.000). CONCLUSION: Concentrated laboratory practice resulted in positive improvements in students’ physical examination skills.

Abstract Objective: We investigated the efficacy of non-contrast 3-Tesla MR imaging added to the combination of sestamibi with99mTc (MIBI) scintigraphy and Ultrasonography (US) for the pre-operative localization of Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) lesions. Methods: A total of 34 parathyroid glands, including nine normal glands, were examined with MIBI, US, and non-contrast 3-Tesla MRI. MRI was performed with the acquisition of T1- and T2-weighted images and fat-suppressed T2-weighted images. We calculated the sensitivities of MIBI, US, and the ‛additional’ MRI, with knowledge of the former two modalities’ results. Results: For the diagnosis of PHPT lesions, the sensitivity values of MIBI, US, and additional MRI were 88.0% (22/25), 84.0% (21/25), and 92.0% (23/25), respectively. Normal glands were not visualized with any modality (0/9). One lesion was detected neither with US nor MRI, but only with MIBI, with the limitation that MIBI represented no more than laterality. The two glands not identified in MRI were 4 mm and 6 mm in their size, which are within the range of normal gland’s size. Two lesions were not detected with US or MIBI but were visualized with the additional MRI, which indicated that the MRI contributed an 8.0% (2/25) improvement of sensitivity, compared from that of US. Fat-suppressed T2-weighted images were useful in the identification of parathyroid lesions, as these images helped to differentiate between the lesion and the adjacent tissue. Conclusion: Additional non-contrast 3-Tesla MRI was a useful adjunctive tool for localization of PHPT, which improved the sensitivity of the pre-operative localization of PHPT lesions. Fatsuppressed T2-weighted images contributed to their identification. Level VI: Evidence from a single descriptive or qualitative study.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate, by a three-dimensional study, the volumetric and integumentary effects of rapid maxillary expansion on the nose, in mouth breathing kids with maxillary hypoplasia, in the short term, assessing the possible interference of gender, growth and age on the results achieved. Methods: 120 mouth breathing patients with maxilla hypoplasia were divided into an Experimental Group treated by rapid maxillary expansion (n = 104, 62 males and 42 females, mean age 10.1 years, SD = 2.10, ranging from 5.1 to 13.9 years); and Control Group, constituted by 16 patients (9 males and 7 females, mean age 9.3 years, SD = 2.1 years, ranging from 6.1 to 13.2 years). Patients in the experimental group underwent multislice computed tomography examinations at two different times: (T1) pre-expansion and (T2) post-expansion. The control group was submitted to the same tests at the same time intervals. Six soft tissue variables of the nose were studied, besides the volume and area of the nasal cavity, and the measurement and comparison of data between T1 and T2 were performed using the Dolphin Imaging 11.7 Premium software. Results: The experimental group showed significant mean increases in all soft tissue variables studied (p < 0.005), yet there were no significant changes in the control group. In the comparison between groups, only inclination of the nasal dorsum did not present any significant change. Conclusion: Rapid maxillary expansion may alter the nasal shape and physiology, by anatomical changes in the nose soft tissues, making it an important aid in the treatment of mouth breathing in childhood. Level of evidence: The soft tissues of the nose play an important role in nasal shape and physiology and facial esthetics, and since they are directly related to the nasal valves, they are fundamental for maintenance and stability of the nasal breathing pattern.

Abstract Objective: The present prospective clinical study aimed to investigate the effects of rapid maxillary expansion on the airway, correlating airway volumes obtained on multi-slice computed tomography and polysomnography assessment of oxygen saturation and apnea/hypopnea index. Methods: Twenty-four patients (11 with obstructive sleep apnea and 13 with residual snoring, mean age 10.0 (1.8), were enrolled in the study. Each patient underwent multislice computed tomography and nocturnal polysomnography before rapid maxillary expansion and after removal of maxillary expansion after six months. Airway regions were segmented, and volumes were computed. Results: The increase in oropharyngeal volume was significant in both groups. Oxygen saturation and apnea/hypopnea index were not statistically significant. No correlation was found between total airway volume, oxygen saturation, and apnea/hypopnea index changes between the time points examined. Conclusions: This study showed that when rapid maxillary expansion is performed in individuals with sleep-disordered breathing, there were statistically significant differences in oropharyngeal volume between pre- and post-rapid maxillary expansion, but there was no correlation between oxygen saturation values and oropharyngeal volume increase. Level of evidence: The article is classified as Evidence Level 3 (Three).

Abstract Introduction: Dietary fiber intake helps in the remission of ulcerative colitis (UC). Objective: To evaluate if there is an association between the amount of fiber in usual diet and disease activity in patients with UC. Methods: Cross-sectional study of a cohort of patients with UC. Dietary fiber intake was calculated and compared with the recommended amount (14 g/1000 kcal) with Mann-Whitney’s U-test. Using Spearman’s correlation coefficient, the number of relapses and the amount of consumed fiber were analyzed, and the relationship of dietary fiber consumption with disease activity was established by logistic regression. Results: The group without ongoing UC activity consumed a higher amount of dietary fiber (20 g, IQR = 18-26, p = 0.062), and 47% consumed more than the recommended amount; the logistic regression analysis showed that compliance with recommended fiber consumption was associated as a protective factor against UC current activity (OR = 0.227, p = 0.032). As for dietary fiber intake and the number of relapses within previous year, an inversely proportional correlation was observed (r = −0.399, p = 0.011). Conclusions: Consumption of the recommended dietary fiber amount in the general population had a protective effect against UC activity in Mexican patients.

A detailed study of the production of hydrogen and high added-value liquid products from the ethanol dehydrogenation reaction in the presence of sodium hydroxide (10% m m-1) was undertaken. Experiments were carried out in a batch reactor under different reaction conditions (temperature of 240 ºC and autogenous pressure between 45 and 72 bar), with analysis of the products obtained in the gas, liquid and solid fractions. The results showed that hydrogen was the major product formed in the gaseous fraction (maximum of 86.9%), while sodium acetate was the product in the solid fraction. Studies of the reaction mechanisms confirmed formation of the products identified in the gaseous and solid fractions. Mass spectrometry analyses of the liquid fractions revealed the presence of a series of compounds with molecular masses considerably higher than that of ethanol, which could be explained by the favoring of anionic polymerization reactions, under the experimental conditions employed.

Abstract Arithmetic map operations are very common procedures used in GIS to combine raster maps resulting in a new and improved raster map. It is essential that this new map be accompanied by an assessment of uncertainty. This paper shows how we can calculate the uncertainty of the resulting map after performing some arithmetic operation. Actually, the propagation of uncertainty depends on a reliable measurement of the local accuracy and local covariance, as well. In this sense, the use of the interpolation variance is proposed because it takes into account both data configuration and data values. Taylor series expansion is used to derive the mean and variance of the function defined by an arithmetic operation. We show exact results for means and variances for arithmetic operations involving addition, subtraction and multiplication and that it is possible to get approximate mean and variance for the quotient of raster maps.

Abstract Thermal treatment is an interesting strategy to dispose of municipal solid waste: it reduces the volume and weight of the material dumped in landfills and generates alternative energy. However, the process emits pollutants, such as dioxins and furans. The present study evaluated MSW gasification-combustion integrated technologies in terms of dioxin and furan emission; and compared the obtained data with literature results on incineration, to point out which operational features differentiate the release of pollutants by these two processes. The results show that the process of integrated gasification and combustion emitted 0.28 ng N-1 m-3, expressed in TEQ (Total Equivalent Toxicity), of PCDD/F, less than the maximum limits allowed by local and international laws, whereas incineration normally affords values above these limits and requires a gas treatment system. The distinct operational conditions of the two thermal processes, especially those related to temperature and the presence of oxygen and fixed carbon, led to a lower PCDD/F emission in gasification.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

BACKGROUND: Coronary restenosis is a poorly understood phenomenon that remains a challenge even in the drug-eluting stent era. This study is aimed at identifying the genes involved in structural and functional protein synthesis of smooth muscle cells with increased expression in human atheromatous plaques associated to neointimal hyperplasia after bare-metal stent implantation. METHODS: Atheromatous plaques were obtained by directional atherectomy prior to stenting. Gene expression analysis was performed using the Affymetrix GeneChip system. Patients were submitted to intravascular ultrasound 6 months after the procedure for in-stent volumetric analysis. We evaluated the correlation between gene expression in atheromatous plaques and the percentage of in-stent intimal hyperplasia. RESULTS: Most patients were male (85.7%), with 60.2 ± 11.4 years of age, 35.7% were diabetic and the percentage of in-stent intimal hyperplasia was 29.9 ± 18.7%. There was no change in the percentage of in-stent intimal hyperplasia in patients with or without diabetes (29.5% vs. 30.7%; P = 0.89). There was no correlation between stent length and the percentage of in-stent intimal hyperplasia (r = -0.26; P = 0.26) or between stent diameter and the percentage of in-stent intimal hyperplasia (r = 0.14; P = 0.56). Eight genes related to smooth muscle cell structural and functional protein synthesis had a positive correlation with the percentage of in-stent intimal hyperplasia. CONCLUSIONS: De novo coronary lesions show increased expression of genes related to smooth muscle cell structural and functional protein synthesis associated to future significant in-stent neointimal hyperplasia, emerging as novel therapeutic targets.

The total ozone has been obtained through ultraviolet (UV) radiation detectors as Radiometers and Spectroradiometers. It was used as an alternative method for stations which do not have expensive equipments to measure ozone such as Brewer Spectrophotometers. The aim of this work is to find mathematical models using the relation between UVB/UVA radiation ratios measured by Spectroradiometer MS 701 and Radiometers UV-B MS 212 W and UV-A MS 212 A and effective ozone measured by Brewer Spectrophotometer MKIII #167. The equipments are installed at the Southern Space Observatory, at southern Brazil. The periods selected for this analysis were the year of 2003 for Spectroradiometer and of 2005 for Radiometers, where only clean sky days were used. The mathematical models that we have derived were exponential functions with correlation coefficient of the order of 0.85 for the relation with Spectroradiometer and of order of 0.99 for the relation with Radiometers. The effective ozone data obtained by Spectroradiometer and Radiometers were fitted with these models and compared with the Brewer and TOMS total ozone. The average difference between the Spectroradiometer model results and Brewer total ozone was 0.7% and between the Spectroradiometer model and TOMS ozone data was 3.1%, while the comparison between the average difference of Radiometers' model and Brewer ozone data was 2% and between Radiometers' model and TOMS was 4.3%. It verifies the efficiency of the method used and the good approximation of the models.
