ABSTRACT Cowpea is a crop of high socioeconomic importance for the semi-arid region of Brazil, although facing significant yield losses due to drought, requiring management strategies to overcome this scenario. From this perspective, this study aimed to evaluate the growth and yield of cowpea genotypes under drought in different cultivation systems. The statistical design was randomized blocks arranged in a 2 × 4 × 2 factorial scheme corresponding to two cowpea genotypes (BRS Pujante and Costela de Vaca), four levels of crop evapotranspiration (40, 60, 80, and 100%), and two cultivation systems (with and without soil mulching). The BRS Pujante showed a higher leaf area and 100-grain weight than Costela de Vaca under all levels of crop evapotranspiration. The cowpea yield parameters showed the best results at 80 and 100% crop evapotranspiration. Regardless of the genotype, soil mulching provided higher cowpea 100-grain weight values. Soil mulching combined with 80% crop evapotranspiration is an appropriate strategy for cowpea production.

RESUMO O feijão-caupi tem grande importância socioeconômica para o semiárido brasileiro, porém sofre perdas significativas de produção pelo estresse por seca, necessitando de estratégias de manejo para superar esse cenário. Nessa perspectiva, o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o crescimento e a produção de genótipos de feijão-caupi sob estresse hídrico em diferentes sistemas de cultivo. O delineamento estatístico adotado foi o de blocos casualizados, em arranjo fatorial 2 × 4 × 2, correspondendo a dois genótipos de feijão-caupi (BRS Pujante e Costela de Vaca), quatro níveis de evapotranspiração da cultura (40, 60, 80 e 100%) e dois sistemas de cultivo (com e sem cobertura morta do solo). O genótipo de feijão-caupi BRS Pujante apresentou maior área foliar e peso de 100 grãos do que o genótipo Costela de Vaca em todos os níveis de evapotranspiração da cultura. Os parâmetros de produção do feijão-caupi apresentaram os melhores resultados a 80 e 100% da evapotranspiração da cultura. Independentemente do genótipo, a cobertura morta do solo proporcionou maiores valores de peso de 100 grãos de feijão-caupi. A cobertura do solo combinada com 80% da evapotranspiração da cultura é uma estratégia adequada para a produção de feijão-caupi.

Resumo A atividade antioxidante do mel de Tetragonisca angustula (TAH) e seu extrato etanólico (TAEE) foram investigados. Os níveis totais de fenólicos (TPC) e flavonóides (TFC) também foram avaliados. Os resultados para TPC foram 19,91 ± 0,38 e 29,37 ± 1,82 mg GAE g-1 e para TFC 0,20 ± 0,02 e 0,14 ± 0,01 mg QE g-1 de TAH e TAEE, respectivamente. As atividades antioxidantes foram 73,29 ± 0,49% e 93,36 ± 0,27% no ensaio DPPH● e 71,73 ± 4,07% e 97,86 ± 0,35% no ABTS●+ para TAH e TAEE, respectivamente. A atividade redutora total foi determinada pelo método de poder redutor (PR) e íon ferrico (Fe III) e os resultados variaram em PR de 151,7 ± 25,7 e 230,7 ± 25,2 mg GAE L-1, para TAH e TAEE respectivamente e para (Fe III) em EC50 0,284 em TAEE e 0,687 em TAH. A análise química por HPLC-DAD do extrato etanólico (TAEE) revelou a presença de ácido ferúlico como componente majoritário no extrato. A análise de RMN 1H confirmou esta estrutura e mostrou a presença de glicose, ácido cítrico, ácido succínico, prolina e derivados de hidrocarbonetos no TAEE. Além disso, a origem botânica também foi investigada e apresentou característica multifloral, tendo encontrado 19 tipos polínicos com predomínio botânico da família Anacardiaceae, sendo o pólen Tapirira predominante (42,6%) e o Schinus secundário (25,7%). Os resultados mostraram que o mel de T. angustula é uma interessante fonte de compostos fenólicos antioxidantes devido à sua origem floral e pode atuar como protetor da saúde humana quando consumido.

Abstract The antioxidant activity of Tetragonisca angustula honey (TAH) and its ethanolic extract (TAEE) were investigated. The total levels of phenolic (TPC) and flavonoids (TFC) were also evaluated. The results for TPC were 19.91 ± 0.38 and 29.37 ± 1.82 mg GAE g-1 and for TFC 0.20 ± 0.02 and 0.14 ± 0.01 mg QE g-1 of TAH and TAEE, respectively. Antioxidant activities were 73.29 ± 0.49% and 93.36 ± 0.27% in the DPPH● assay and 71.73 ± 4.07% and 97.86 ± 0.35% in ABTS●+ for TAH and TAEE, respectively. The total reducing activity was determined by the method of reducing power (PR) and iron ion (Fe III) and the results varied in PR from 151.7 ± 25.7 and 230.7 ± 25.2 mg GAE L-1, for TAH and TAEE respectively and for (Fe III) in EC50 0.284 in TAEE and 0.687 in TAH. Chemical analysis by HPLC-DAD of the ethanolic extract (TAEE) revealed the presence of ferulic acid as majority phenolic component in the extract. The 1H NMR analysis confirmed this structure and showed the also presence of glucose, citric acid, succinic acid, proline and hydrocarbon derivatives. In addition, the botanical origin was also investigated and showed a multifloral characteristic, having found 19 pollen types with a botanical predominance of the Anacardiaceae family, with Tapirira pollen occurring as predominant (42.6%) and Schinus as secondary (25.7%). The results showed that T. angustula honey is an interesting source of antioxidant phenolic compounds due to its floral origin and can act as a protector of human health when consumed.

ABSTRACT Enthalpy is currently suggested as a suitable index for assessing the internal environment of poultry production, primarily dependents on air temperature and relative air humidity. This study aimed to analyze enthalpy in bird production in Londrina, located in the northern region of Paraná, Brazil, and to model the comfort enthalpy required for enhanced production efficiency. Data from 1961 to 2021 from the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET), Brasília, Federal District, Brazil, were utilized to compare the thermal comfort conditions and critical limits set for the birds. The meteorological data from this period were scrutinized to understand their variations and interrelationship through a descriptive study and correlation analysis of different parameters. The research findings, based on the enthalpy indices derive historical averages, suggest that heating is crucial for birds during the first and second weeks of housing, during the winter, given the location’s low temperatures. For birds housed during the third to sixth weeks of age, the enthalpy indices indicated the necessity of cooling systems.

RESUMO A entalpia tem sido proposta atualmente como um índice adequado para a avaliação do ambiente interno de galpões de frangos de corte, pois depende basicamente da temperatura e da umidade relativa do ar. Dessa forma, objetivou-se analisar a entalpia como índice de conforto térmico na produção de aves para o município de Londrina, Paraná, e modelar a entalpia aos índices de conforto térmico que proporcionam eficiência na produção. Para o estudo, utilizaram-se dados de 1961 a 2021 do Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET), de Brasília, Distrito Federal. Os dados meteorológicos desse período foram analisados para conhecer suas variações e as relações entre eles, através de um estudo descritivo e de correlação entre diferentes parâmetros, para comparar as condições de conforto térmico e os limites críticos estabelecidos para as aves. Com base nos resultados desta pesquisa, considerando os índices de entalpia obtidos através de médias históricas, pode-se concluir que a utilização de aquecimento para as aves na primeira e segunda semanas de alojamento, no período de inverno, considerando o local estudado, é imprescindível, devido às baixas temperaturas registadas. Para aves alojadas na terceira, quarta, quinta e sexta semana de idade, considerando os índices de entalpia, pode-se concluir que é necessária a utilização de sistemas de resfriamento para as aves.

ABSTRACT Brazil is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of animal protein, and swine farming plays a significant role in this sector. With the increase in the prices of mineral fertilizers, swine manure can be an alternative for fertilization and reduce production costs if carefully monitored to minimize damage and environmental impacts. The objective of this study was to characterize swine liquid slurry from a commercial finishing farm and determine the concentrations of total nitrogen, N-NH4 +, total phosphorus, and potassium for its use as a source of nutrients for the soil. The manure volume was calculated. The body retention of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium and physical and chemical attributes of the feed and manure were evaluated. In the analyzed swine manure, the concentrations of the total nitrogen, ammoniacal nitrogen, total phosphorus, and potassium were 6.14, 2.87, 3.66, and 2.64 g L-1, respectively. Liquid swine manure proved to be an efficient substitute for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium chemical fertilizers, representing cost savings of R$11,743.44 in chemical fertilizers.

RESUMO O Brasil é um dos maiores produtores e exportadores mundiais de proteína animal, e a suinocultura desempenha um papel significativo neste setor. Com o aumento dos preços dos fertilizantes minerais, o dejeto de suínos pode ser uma alternativa para adubação e redução dos custos de produção se monitorado cuidadosamente para minimizar danos e impactos ambientais. O objetivo do estudo foi caracterizar os dejetos líquidos suínos de uma granja comercial de terminação e determinar as concentrações de nitrogênio total, N-NH4 +, fósforo total e potássio, para sua utilização como fonte de nutrientes ao solo. O volume de esterco foi calculado. Foram avaliadas a retenção corporal de nitrogênio, fósforo e potássio e os atributos físicos e químicos da ração e do esterco. Nos dejetos de suínos analisados, as concentrações de nitrogênio total, nitrogênio amoniacal, fósforo total e potássio foram 6,14, 2,87, 3,66 e 2,64 g L de nitrogênio total, nitrogênio amoniacal, fósforo total e potássio, respectivamente. O esterco líquido de suínos mostrou-se um eficiente substituto dos fertilizantes químicos nitrogenados, fosfatados e potássicos, representando economia de R$ 11.743,44 em fertilizantes químicos.

ABSTRACT Modeling the response of soils to liming is important for understanding neutralization reactions and predicting lime residual effects. Models based on simple or quadratic polynomial equations are the most used due to their simplicity and ease of fitting; however, they fail to reproduce a realistic soil response to liming, indicating a decrease in pH as the lime dose is increased after reaching a maximum point. Thus, several nonlinear functions were tested and compared to polynomial models, using a dataset from a liming test conducted on a sandy clay loam soil in a farm. The best-fitting models for pH data were the Mitscherlich, three-parameter logistic, and Morgan-Mercer-Flodin models. The best-fitting models for exchangeable Ca+2 + Mg+2 data were Skaggs et al., Gompertz, and Morgan- Mercer-Flodin. The use of the proposed T index, which ranks models based on their residual standard error and Akaike information criterion values, combined with constraints on extrapolation values, was useful for selecting models that are statistically robust and empirically coherent.

RESUMO A modelagem da resposta de solos à calagem é importante para a compreensão das reações de neutralização e para a predição de seu efeito residual. Os modelos baseados em equações polinomiais simples ou múltiplas são os mais usados, em função de sua simplicidade e facilidade de ajuste, mas falham em reproduzir uma resposta realística à calagem, indicando um decréscimo do pH com a dose, após o máximo valor ter sido alcançado. Neste trabalho, uma série de funções não lineares foi comparada à polinomial, usando uma base de dados de um teste de calagem em uma fazenda com solo franco-argilo-arenoso. Os melhores modelos foram os de Mitscherlich, o logístico de três parâmetros e o modelo de Morgan, Mercer e Flodin. Para os dados de Ca+2 + Mg+2 trocáveis, os melhores modelos foram os Skaggs et al., o de Gompertz e o modelo de Morgan Mercer e Flodin. O uso conjunto do proposto índice T, baseado no ranqueamento dos modelos baseado em seus valores de erro padrão residual e do critério de Akaike, associados às restrições dos valores extrapolados, ajudaram na escolha de modelos que são estatisticamente robustos e empiricamente coerentes.

ABSTRACT: Lettuce and arugula are the most cultivated leafy vegetables in hydroponic systems in the world, and the little information about Azospirillum brasilense effects in research in this system makes it necessary to verify the best method of inoculation of these bacteria. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the beneficial effects of inoculation methods of A. brasilense on plant growth and nutrition of lettuce and arugula grown in the hydroponic system. The study was conducted in a greenhouse with 30% shading. A randomized block design with five replicates in a 4 × 2 factorial scheme was used. Four A. brasilense inoculation methods (non-inoculated, foliar application, nutrient solution, and nutrient solution + foliar application) and two leafy vegetable species - arugula and lettuce - were evaluated. All inoculation methods improved plant height, shoot fresh and dry mass, root fresh and dry mass, fresh leaf yield, leaf chlorophyll index, accumulation of nitrogen, potassium, calcium, sulfur, phosphorus, iron, manganese, and copper and reduced nitrate accumulation in shoot and root of arugula and lettuce. Inoculation via nutrient solution + foliar application of A. brasilense is the most suitable for hydroponic arugula cultivation because it provides greater fresh leaf yield. All inoculation methods increased leaf yield in hydroponic lettuce. Hydroponic arugula and lettuce plants showed greater accumulation of nutrients and plant growth with less nitrate accumulation in the shoot under inoculation with A. brasilense.

RESUMO A alface e a rúcula são as hortaliças folhosas mais cultivadas em sistemas hidropônicos no mundo, e as poucas informações sobre os efeitos do Azospirillum brasilense em pesquisas neste sistema torna-se necessário verificar o melhor método de inoculação dessas bactérias. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi verificar os efeitos benéficos de métodos de inoculação de A. brasilense em alface e rúcula no crescimento e nutrição das plantas em sistema hidropônico. O estudo foi conduzido em casa de vegetação com 30% de sombreamento. Foi usado o delineamento em blocos ao acaso com 5 repetições em esquema fatorial 4 × 2, com quatro métodos de inoculação de A. brasilense (não inoculado, foliar, solução nutritiva e solução nutritiva + inoculação foliar) e o segundo fator foi a aplicação em rúcula e alface. Todos os métodos de inoculação melhoraram a altura da planta, massa fresca e seca da parte aérea, massa fresca e seca da raiz, rendimento da planta, índice de clorofila foliar, acúmulo de nitrogênio, potássio, cálcio, enxofre, fósforo, ferro, manganês, cobre e redução do acúmulo de nitrato na parte aérea e raízes de rúcula e alface. A inoculação via solução nutriente + inoculação foliar de A. brasilense é a mais indicada para o cultivo hidropônico de rúcula, pois proporciona maior rendimento de folhas, e todos os métodos de inoculação foram capazes de aumentar o rendimento de folhas em alface hidropônica. Plantas hidropônicas de rúcula e alface apresentaram maior acúmulo de nutrientes e crescimento das plantas com menor acúmulo de nitrato na parte aérea sob inoculação com A. brasilense.

Research to identify plant bioactive compounds led to the evolution of extraction methods. This study optimized ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) to extract the flavonoids of Croton grewioides Baill. species contributing to characterize the polar extract profile and understand the antioxidant potential of these plant constituents. The use of experimental design and statistical treatments enabled the determination of the ideal conditions for each technique. The extracts of five accessions of C. grewioides were obtained under the optimized extraction conditions and were analyzed using ultra high-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-Orbitrap MS) operating at negative ionization mode for flavonoids detection. The accurate experimental mass obtained to the main compounds was used to attribute the molecular formula. Chemical structures of the main compounds detected were proposed using structure data bases. Chemometric analysis were performed with two FT-Orbitrap MS spectra samples using the identified metabolites and, the antioxidant activity data, showing that for this species the MAE was most effective in extracting the antioxidant compounds. RESUMO Práticas inadequadas de manejo antes do abate podem comprometer o bem-estar animal e a qualidade da carne suína. Este estudo visou avaliar os efeitos do período de transporte (TT), período de descarga (TD), e período de pré-abate (TE) nos indicadores termofisiológicos animais e no pH da carne suína, utilizando uma abordagem multivariada. Este estudo foi realizado num matadouro localizado em Aquiraz, Ceará, Brasil. Um total de 60 suínos mestiços com 107 ± 5 kg de peso corporal foram distribuídos em três grupos experimentais: grupo A (TT = 180 min, TD ≤ 10 min, e TE = 24 horas), grupo B (TT = 60 min, TD ≤ 15 min, e TE = 18 horas), e grupo C (TT = 45 min, TD ≤ 5 min, e TE = 24 horas). A análise discriminante canônica foi implementada e as diferenças entre tratamentos são representadas graficamente. Os dois primeiros componentes foram responsáveis por 97% dos tratamentos. A análise discriminante mostrou que o grupo C apresentou diferenças multivariadas em relação aos outros, particularmente com temperatura retal elevada antes do abate (38,4 ± 0,23 °C) e frequência respiratória (131 ± 7,0 respirações min-1) e temperatura retal (39,7 ± 0,18 °C) à chegada ao matadouro. O período de transporte (TT), período de descarga (TD) e o stress térmico das instalações influenciaram variáveis fisiológicas, tais como a temperatura retal e a frequência respiratória. Além disso, as variáveis de estresse fisiológico também favoreceram cortes com pH básico, resultando em perda de qualidade.

ABSTRACT Inadequate pre-slaughter handling practices may compromise animal welfare and pork quality. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of transport period (TT), unloading period (UT), and pre-slaughtering period (WT) on animal thermophysiological indicators and pork pH using a multivariate approach. This study was conducted in a slaughterhouse located in Aquiraz, Ceará state, Brazil. A total of 60 mestizo pigs with 107 ± 5 kg body weight were distributed into three experimental groups: group A (TT = 180 min, UT ≤ 10 min, and WT = 24 hours), group B (TT = 60 min, UT ≤ 15 min, and WT = 18 hours), and group C (TT = 45 min, UT ≤ 5 min, and WT = 24 hours). Canonical discriminant analysis was implemented and the differences between treatments are represented graphically. The first two components accounted for 97% treatments. The discriminant analysis showed that group C presented multivariate differences in relation to others, particularly with high rectal temperature before slaughter (38.4 ± 0.23 °C) and respiratory rate (131 ± 7.0 breaths min-1) and rectal temperature (39.7 ± 0.18 °C) upon arrival at the slaughterhouse. Transport period (TT), unloading period (UT), and thermal stress of the facilities influenced physiological variables, such as rectal temperature and respiratory rate. Furthermore, the physiological stress variables also favored cuts with basic pH, resulting in quality loss.

RESUMO Os sistemas de produção de suínos contribuem com emissões de gases de efeito estufa (dióxido de carbono - CO2, óxido nitroso - N2O e metano - CH4) e amônia - NH3 para a atmosfera. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar metodologias para determinação das emissões de amônia e gases de efeito estufa em uma unidade de produção comercial de suínos durante a fase de terminação, que possui ventilação natural. Foram medidas as concentrações de gases no ar pelo analisador de gases (INNOVA 1412) e foi calculada a vazão de emissões considerando a taxa de ventilação e as diferenças de concentração de gases entre o interior e o exterior da instalação. Os resultados mostraram que a vazão de emissão obtida pela metodologia simplificada em [g suíno por hora] foi: 2,689 para CO2, 0,30 para N2O, 4,39 para CH4, 13,55 para NH3 e 3,273 para vapor d’água. A vazão obtida para a metodologia contínua em [g suíno por hora] foi de 574 para CO2, 0,67 para N2O, 19,50 para CH4, 5,84 para NH3 e 7,2 para vapor d’água. A metodologia simplificada foi altamente precisa para estimar as emissões de GEE em sistemas de produção de suínos com ventilação natural.

ABSTRACT Swine production systems contribute to emission of greenhouse gases (CO2, N2O, and CH4) and ammonia (NH3) into the atmosphere. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate methods for determining the emissions of ammonia and greenhouse gases (GHG) in a commercial swine production unit with natural ventilation during the finishing phase. The concentrations of gases in the air were measured using a gas analyzer (INNOVA 1412), and the flow emission was calculated by considering the ventilation rate and the differences in gas concentration between the interior and exterior of the installation. The results showed that the emission flow obtained via the simplified method in [g per swine h-1] was 2.689, 0.30, 4.39, 13.55, and 3.273 for CO2, N2O, CH4, NH3, and water vapor, respectively. The flow obtained using the continuous method in [g per swine h-1] was 574, 0.67, 19.50, 5.84, and 7.2 for CO2, N2O, CH4, NH3, and water vapor, respectively. The proposed simplified method was highly accurate for estimating GHG emissions from swine production systems with natural ventilation.

RESUMO Aplicações exógenas de compostos químicos estimulam modificações no metabolismo vegetal e conferem tolerância a diferentes estresses ambientais, incluindo o déficit hídrico. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos do uso de ácido salicílico (AS) e prolina na redução do estresse hídrico em uma variedade tradicional de feijão-caupi em um clima típico do semiárido brasileiro. Foi utilizado um delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 2 × 4 com cinco repetições. Foram utilizadas duas lâminas de irrigação, correspondentes a 100% (W100) e 50% da evapotranspiração diária (W50) e quatro tratamentos com atenuadores: controle (água destilada), AS (550 mg L-1), prolina (690 mg L-1) e 690 mg L-1 prolina + 550 mg L-1 AS. Os elicitores promoveram alterações no metabolismo osmótico e antioxidante, o que pode contribuir para o mecanismo de tolerância das plantas de feijão-caupi sob restrição hídrica. A aplicação de ácido salicílico aumentou a síntese de osmorreguladores, a concentração de proteínas e modulou a atividade de enzimas antioxidantes em plantas de feijão-caupi sob estresse. A concentração de prolina aumentou sinergicamente nas plantas tratadas com prolina e AS, principalmente em 50% de reposição de água.

ABSTRACT Exogenous applications of chemical compounds stimulate changes in plant metabolism and promote tolerance to different environmental stresses, including water deficit. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of salicylic acid (SA) and proline (PRO) to reduce water stress in a traditional variety of cowpea in a typical Brazilian semiarid climate. A completely randomized design was used in a 2 × 4 factorial scheme, with five replicates. Two irrigation regimes were evaluated corresponding to 100% (W100) and 50% of daily evapotranspiration (W50), respectively, with the addition of the following four attenuators: control (distilled water), SA (550 mg L-1), PRO (690 mg L-1), and 690 mg L-1 PRO + 550 mg L-1 SA. The treatments promoted changes in osmotic and antioxidant metabolism, which may contribute to the tolerance mechanisms of cowpea plants to water stress. The application of SA increased osmoregulator synthesis and protein concentrations, and modulated antioxidant enzyme activity in the cowpea plants under water stress. PRO concentrations increased synergistically in plants treated with PRO and SA, particularly in 50% of water replacement.

Resumo O tilirosídeo é um flavonóide glicosídico presente em muitas espécies de plantas, incluindo Helicteres velutina K. Schum (Malvaceae sensu lato), conhecida no Brasil como “pitó”. Esta molécula mostrou ter muitas atividades biológicas, porém nenhum estudo foi realizado para investigar a toxicidade dessa substância. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a possível toxicidade celular in silico, in vitro e ex-vivo do kaempferol-3-O-β-D- (6 ”-Ep-coumaroil) glucopiranosídeo (tilirosídeo), por meio de análises de estrutura química, toxicidade avaliação e propriedades bioativas preditivas, utilizando amostras humanas para testes in vitro e ex-vivo. A análise in silico sugere que o tilirosídeo exibe bom índice de absorção para penetrar nas membranas biológicas. Além disso, apresentou considerável potencial de proteção celular contra os radicais livres e com atividades anticarcinogênica, antioxidante, antineoplásica, antiinflamatória, anti-hemorrágica e antitrombótica. A avaliação dos efeitos hemolíticos e genotóxicos do tilirosídeo mostrou baixas taxas de hemólise nas hemácias e ausência de toxicidade em células da mucosa oral. Os dados obtidos indicam que esta molécula pode possuir uma abordagem terapêutica promissora como uma possível nova droga com potencial biotecnológico.

Abstract Tiliroside is a glycosidic flavonoid present in many plants species including Helicteres velutina K. Schum (Malvaceae sensu lato), commonly known in Brazil as “pitó”. This molecule has been shown to have many biological activities, however no study has been carried out to investigate the toxicity of this substance. The present work aimed to evaluate the possible cellular toxicity in silico, in vitro and ex-vivo of the kaempferol-3-O-β-D-(6”-E-p-coumaroyl) glucopyranoside (tiliroside), through chemical structure analysis, toxicity assessment and predictive bioactive properties, using human samples for in vitro and ex-vivo tests. The in silico analysis suggests that tiliroside exhibited great absorption index when penetrating biological membranes. In addition, it also displayed considerable potential for cellular protection against free radicals, and anticarcinogenic, antioxidant, antineoplastic, anti-inflammatory, anti-hemorrhagic and antithrombotic activities. The assessment of the hemolytic and genotoxic effects of tiliroside showed low hemolysis rates in red blood cells and absence of cellular toxicity in the oral mucosa cells. The data obtained indicate that this molecule could be a promising therapeutic approach as a possible new drug with biotechnological potential.

The chemical-mineralogical characterization of rupestrian paintings in red, white, black and yellow colors, which decorate the rocky walls from the archaeological sites of Ema and Furna dos Índios (Inhuma, Piauí, Brazil) was performed. The chemical analyses were performed in situ by the non-invasive analytical technique X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) as well as in laboratory using a non-destructive approach, without previous sample preparation, and Raman microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) techniques. The results, when together, allowed unequivocal identification of the main substances responsible for the color pigments, namely, hematite (red pigment), gypsum (white pigment), amorphous carbon from charcoal (black pigment) and goethite (yellow pigment).

AISI 6160 steel is used to manufacture cutting blades and springs due to its high tensile strength and good ductility. However, it has low mechanical strength and low wear resistance. In this work, a duplex treatment consisting of CCPD followed by PN was performed to improve the surface properties of the steel. In addition, XRD, optical microscopy, microhardness, and sphere-disk tribological analysis were used to verify the surface changes of the samples. The results showed a significant improvement in surface hardness and better wear resistance of AISI 6160 Steel submitted to Duplex treatment. The sample submitted to the CCPD treatment for 4 hours and, after nitriding at 500 °C for 2 hours, presented higher surface hardness and wear resistance than the sample only subjected to plasma deposition, characterizing the efficiency of the use of the duplex treatment adopted in the present work.
