Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to estimate genetic parameters and evaluate genetic trends over 26 years for morphometric traits in Mangalarga Marchador horses. Twelve morphometric traits were evaluated (withers and croup heights; length of head, body, shoulder, croup, neck, back, and loins; width of head and croup, and cannon bone and thorax perimeters). These traits were evaluated in 38,341 animals born between 1987 and 2012 and with a relationship matrix of 77,719 animals. Gibbs sampler was used to obtain samples of the posterior distributions of genetic parameters under animal models. Genetic trends were estimated by regression of estimated breeding values in function of birth year. The heritabilities of all traits were moderate to high and ranged from 0.27 to 0.48. However, the additive genetic coefficients of variation were low, ranging from 1.23 to 3.82%. The genetic trends of all the studied traits were significant, but of low magnitude. Negative genetic trend was observed for body length, while positive genetic trends were estimated for the other 11 traits. Although additive genetic differences accounted for a significant part of the phenotypic differences, genetic gains in the population were limited by low phenotypic variability. Therefore, it is necessary to develop data collection strategies to increase phenotypic and genetic variability in the population, such as the inclusion of animals that do not meet breed standard, but which have parents registered in the breeders’ association, in the database.

RESUMO Foram realizados dois experimentos com o objetivo de estimar as relações treonina: lisina (Treo: Lis) digestíveis para codornas de corte fêmeas durante os períodos de 21 a 28 e 28 a 35 dias de idade. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado. No primeiro experimento foram utilizadas 440 codornas distribuídas em cinco tratamentos, oito repetições e 11 aves por gaiola. Para o segundo experimento utilizou-se 280 codornas distribuídas em cinco tratamentos, oito repetições e sete aves por gaiola. Foram avaliadas cinco relações Treo: Lis digestíveis (0,66; 0,71; 0,76; 0,81 e 0,86). Avaliou-se o desempenho, o rendimento de carcaça e de cortes, a composição química da carcaça e o balanço de nitrogênio. Observou-se melhora (P<0,05) da conversão alimentar e aumento do consumo de ração devido às relações Treo: Lis digestíveis, nos períodos de 21 a 28 e 29 a 35 dias de idade, respectivamente. Aos 35 dias observou-se melhor (P<0,05) rendimento de carcaça e balanço de nitrogênio negativo com Treo: Lis avaliadas. Recomenda-se a relação de Treo: Lis digestível de 0,86 como o ótimo para a conversão alimentar e o rendimento de carcaça das codornas de corte fêmeas nos períodos de 21 a 28 e 28 a 35 dias.

ABSTRACT Two assays were performed to estimate digestible threonine-lysine (Threo-Lys) ratio for female meat-type quails between 21 and 28 days old and between 28 and 35 days old. Experimental design was totally randomized. The first assay comprised 440 quails distributed into 5 treatments, 8 replications and 11 fowls per cage. The second assay comprised 280 quails distributed into 5 treatments, 8 replications and 7 fowls per cage. Five digestible Threo: Lys ratios were evaluated (0.66, 0.71, 0.76, 0.81 and 0.86). Performance, carcass and cut yield, chemical composition of carcass and nitrogen balance were evaluated. There was an improvement (P<0.05) in feed conversion and increase in feed intake due to ratios of digestible Threo: Lys between 21 and 28 and between 29 and 35 days olds, respectively. At 35 days old, there was a better (P<0.05) carcass yield and a negative nitrogen balance for Threo: Lys analyzed. A ratio of 0.86 may be recommended for digestible Threo: Lys as the best for feed conversion and carcass yield for female meat-type quails between 21 and 28 and between 28 and 35 days.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar as características da conservação de silagens do bagaço de cultivares de sorgo sacarino. Conduziu-se o experimento na Fazenda Rio Manso, unidade experimental da Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri. Utilizaram-se 25 cultivares de sorgo sacarino, com três repetições, no delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Extraiu-se o caldo do corpo da planta através de uma moenda elétrica, gerando o bagaço, que logo foi moído em máquina ensiladora estacionária, adicionados de suas panículas, e depois introduzido com um bastão em silos experimentais. As silagens das cultivares: BR505; CMSXS629; CMSXS635; CMSXS639; CMSXS643; CMSXS646; V82391 e V82392 apresentaram menor taxa de Recuperação Total de Matéria Seca e consequentemente maiores perdas por gases. Os teores médios de Matéria Seca do bagaço e da silagem foram de 32,80 e 28,55% respectivamente. As cultivares BR501; XBSW80147; BR505; CMSXS629; CMSXS633; CMSXS634; CMSXS635; CMSXS639, CMSXS643; CMSXS644, CMSXS648; BRS601; Sugargraze; V82391; V82392 e V82393 apresentaram maiores teores de proteína bruta. Registrou-se média de 3,49 para o pH e de 0,96 para atividade da água. As cultivares BR501 e BRS601 apresentaram maiores valores de condutividade elétrica: 0,93 e 0,95 S/cm respectivamente. Apenas nas cultivares BR501; CMSXS629; CMSXS636; CMSXS648 e V82392 notaram-se maiores teores de nitrogênio amoniacal. De acordo com as variáveis avaliadas neste estudo, as silagens do bagaço de cultivares de sorgo sacarino apresentaram uma adequada conservação do material dentro dos silos.

SUMARY The aim of this study was to evaluate conservation characteristics of sweet sorghum bagasse silages. The experiment was carried out at Fazenda Rio Manso, an experimental unit of the Federal University of the Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys. Twenty-five sorghum cultivars with three replicates were used in a completely randomized design. The juice was extracted from the plant through an electric mill, generating bagasse, which was ground in a stationary silage machine, added of its panicles, and then introduced into experimental silos. Silages of the varieties BR505; CMSXS629; CMSXS635; CMSXS639; CMSXS643; CMSXS646; V82391 and V82392 presented lower rate of total dry matter recovery and, consequently, higher gas losses. The means of dry matter contents of bagasse and silage were 32.80 and 28.55%, respectively. The cultivars BR501; XBSW80147; BR505; CMSXS629; CMSXS633; CMSXS634; CMSXS635; CMSXS639; CMSXS643; CMSXS644; CMSXS648; BRS601; Sugargraze; V82391; V82392 and V82393 showed higher crude protein levels. The cultivar CMSXS642 presented lower neutral and acid detergent fiber content: 39.23 and 19.23%, respectively. The cultivar XBSW80147 showed lower acid detergent fiber content. Means of 3.49 for pH and 0.96 for water activity were recorded. The cultivars BR501 and BRS601 showed higher values of electrical conductivity: 0.93 and 0.95 S/cm, respectively. Higher levels of ammoniacal nitrogen were only observed in cultivars BR501; CMSXS629; CMSXS636; CMSXS648 and V82392. Sorghum bagasse silages presented adequate conservation inside the silos, according to the evaluated variables.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar se o modelo de regressão aleatória com polinômios lineares do tipo spline (MRAPLS) é adequado para estimar os parâmetros genéticos de características produtivas e reprodutivas em uma população multirracial de bovinos leiteiros, bem como investigar o efeito do grupo genético da progênie sobre o mérito genético do touro. Foram utilizados o modelo multicaracterístico (Mult) e o MRAPLS com nós ajustados aos grupos genéticos, para obtenção dos parâmetros genéticos. Foram considerados os registros de vacas 1/2 Holandesa + 1/2 Gir (1/2HG), 5/8 Holandesa + 3/8 Gir (5/8HG) e 3/4 Holandesa + 1/4 Gir (3/4HG). O MRAPLS apresentou os melhores ajustes. As variâncias aditivas e residuais estimadas por Mult e MRAPLS foram semelhantes. As herdabilidades variaram de 0,20 a 0,33 para idade ao primeiro parto, de 0,09 a 0,22 para duração da primeira lactação e de 0,15 a 0,35 para produção de leite em até 305 dias na primeira lactação, de acordo com a composição genética das vacas. O MRAPLS é adequado para estimar parâmetros genéticos de características produtivas e reprodutivas em populações multirraciais de bovinos leiteiros. O mérito genético do touro é influenciado pelo grupo genético da progênie por meio do qual ele é avaliado.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine whether the random regression model using linear splines (RRMLS) is suitable to estimate the genetic parameters for productive and reproductive traits of a multiple-breed dairy cattle population, as well as to investigate the effect of the genetic group of the progeny on the genetic merit of the sire. The multiple-trait model (MTM) and the RRMLS with one knot fitted for every genetic group were used to obtain the genetic parameters. Records of 1/2 Holstein + 1/2 Gyr (1/2HG), 5/8 Holstein + 3/8 Gyr (5/8HG), and 3/4 Holstein + 1/4 Gyr (3/4HG) crossbreed dams were considered. The RRMLS showed better fitting. The additive and residual variances estimated by the MTM and the RRMLS were similar. Heritability varied from 0.20 to 0.33 for age at first calving, from 0.09 to 0.22 for first lactation length, and from 0.15 to 0.35 for first lactation 305-day milk yield, according to the genetic composition of the dams. The RRMLS is suitable to estimate the genetic parameters for productive and reproductive traits of multiple-breed dairy cattle populations. The genetic merit of the sires is affected by the genetic group of the progeny by which they are evaluated.

RESUMO: O estudo da avaliação genética do consumo alimentar residual ajustado para a gordura (CARFat) é importante para o uso apropriado da eficiência alimentar em programas de seleção. Objetivou-se analisar a influência da seleção para CARFat sobre características de carcaça e de desempenho, frente à estimação dos parâmetros genéticos. Foram analisados os dados de cinco provas de eficiência alimentar, com 677 machos Nelore. A avaliação genética foi realizada por Inferência Bayesiana, com modelo animal, em análises uni e bicaracterística. Foram analisadas as variáveis: ingestão de matéria seca, ganho de peso diário, CARFat, área de olho de lombo, espessura de gordura, espessura de gordura subcutânea na picanha, marmoreio e acabamento. As médias das distribuições a posteriori, estimadas em cada uma das análises, foram usadas para a estimação das herdabilidades e das correlações. As características estudadas apresentaram altas estimativas de herdabilidades, devendo responder bem à seleção. O CARFat apresentou correlações fenotípicas próximas a zero com as características de carcaça, e correlações genéticas negativas. A variabilidade genética aditiva observada para CARFat demonstra que a seleção para essa característica poderá promover ganhos genéticos nas futuras gerações, obtendo animais eficientes na utilização de alimentos e, de acordo com as correlações genéticas e fenotípicas encontradas, sem mudanças negativas significativas às características da carcaça.

ABSTRACT: The study of the genetic evaluation of residual feed intake adjusted for fat (RFIFat) is important for the appropriate use of feed efficiency in selection programs. The objective was to analyze the influence of selection for RFIF at on carcass and performance traits by estimating various genetic parameters. Data were analyzed from five tests of feed efficiency, which were conducted with 677 Nellore males. Genetic evaluation was performed by Bayesian inference using an animal model via single- and two-trait analyses. Variables analyzed were dry matter intake, average daily gain, RFIFat, rib eye area, back fat thickness, rump fat thickness, marbling score, and subcutaneous fat thickness. The posterior mean distributions estimated at each analysis were used to estimate heritability of the traits and to perform various correlations. The studied traits showed high heritability estimates, and they should respond well to selection. The RFIFat presented a phenotypic correlation with carcass traits (which was next to zero), and there was also a negative genetic correlation. Additive genetic variability for RFIFat showed that selection for this trait can promote genetic gains in future generations, resulting in animals that are efficient in terms of nutrient use, and according to the genetic and phenotypic correlations, with no significant negative changes to carcass traits.

RESUMO Dois experimentos foram realizados com o objetivo de determinar as exigências de lisina digestível para frangos tipo caipira, linhagem Redbro machos e fêmeas, criados em semiconfinamento durante as fases de crescimento (43 a 56) e final (57 a 70 dias). Para isso, 630 frangos foram alojados em 30 boxes com área de pastejo e o delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado em arranjo fatorial 5x2 (lisina digestível e sexo) e três repetições com 21 aves cada. Os níveis de lisina digestível avaliados foram: 6,07; 7,07; 8,07; 9,07 e 10,07g/kg (fase de crescimento) e 6,00; 7,00; 8,00; 9,00 e 10,00g/kg (fase final). Avaliou-se o desempenho, o rendimento de carcaça e cortes, gordura abdominal e características da qualidade da carne. Para a fase de crescimento não houve diferenças dos níveis de lisina sobre o desempenho dos frangos, exceto para o consumo de lisina digestível. Portanto, o nível de 6,07 g de lisina digestível/kg de ração atende as exigências dos frangos de ambos os sexos. Para a fase final observou-se efeito dos níveis de lisina digestível somente para a conversão alimentar, sendo o nível de 8,51 g de lisina /kg de ração o que melhora essa variável.

SUMMARY Two experiments were carried in order to determine digestible lysine requirements for free-range broiler hillbilly, Redbro lineage, males and females, created in free range system during the growing (43 to 56) and final phases (57 to 70 days). For this, 630 chickens were housed in 30 pens with pasture area and the experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial arrangement 5x2 (lysine and gender), with three replications with 21 chicks each. The digestible lysine levels evaluated were: 6.07, 7.07, 8.07, 9.07 and 10.07 (growth phase) and 6.00, 7.00, 8.00, 9.00 and 10.00 g/kg (final phase). Were evaluated the performance, the carcass and cuts yield, abdominal fat and meat quality characteristics. For the growth phase there were no differences of lysine levels on performance of the chiks, except for the consumption of digestible lysine. Therefore, the level of 6.07 g lysine /kg of diet meet the requirements of broilers of both genders. For the final phase it we observed effect of digestible lysine levels only to feed conversion, and the level of 8.51 g of lysine/kg of diet improve this trait.

Relações metionina + cistina: lisina digestíveis para codornas de corte machos em fase de terminação

RESUMO Com o objetivo de estimar as melhores relações metionina + cistina: lisina digestíveis para codornas de corte machos durante os períodos de 22 a 28 e 29 a 35 dias de idade foram desenvolvidos dois experimentos. As aves foram submetidas a uma ração basal deficiente em metionina + cistina digestível, sendo esta suplementada com cinco níveis de DL-Metionina, em substituição ao ácido glutâmico e amido, resultando nas seguintes relações metionina + cistina: lisina digestíveis: 0,68; 0,73; 0,78; 0,83 e 0,88. Foram utilizadas 280 codornas distribuídas em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos, oito repetições de sete aves por parcela. Avaliou-se o consumo de ração, ganho de peso, conversão alimentar, rendimento de carcaça, empenamento das aves, composição química da carcaça e balanço de nitrogênio. Durante o período de 22 a 28 dias de idade não houve efeito para as variáveis estudadas frente às relações + cistina: lisina digestíveis. Para o período de 29 a 35 dias de idade observou-se efeito para o consumo de ração, consumo de metionina + cistina e o ganho de peso. Aos 35 dias de idade observou-se efeito para o rendimento de coxa e sobrecoxa, extrato etéreo e proteína bruta da carcaça e para a retenção de nitrogênio. Recomendam-se as relações + metionina + cistina : lisina digestíveis de 0,68 e 0,88 durante os períodos de 22 a 28 e 29 a 35 dias de idade, respectivamente.

SUMMARY In order of estimating the best relations methionine plus cystine: digestible lysine for quails males during the periods 22 to 28 and 29 to 35 days of age were developed two experiments. The quails received a basal diet deficient in methionine plus cystine, which were supplemented with five levels of DL-Methionine, replacing glutamic acid and starch, resulting in the following relations: 0.68, 0.73, 0.78, 0.83 and 0.88. A total of 280 quails distributed in a completely randomized design, with five treatments and eight replicates of seven quails per experimental unit. Feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion, carcass yield and feathering of quails, composition of the carcass and nitrogen balance were evaluate. During the period from 22 to 28 days of age there was no effect for the variables studied front to relations methionine plus cystine : digestible lysine. During the period 29 to 35 days of age was observed effect on feed intake, methionine + cystine intake and weight gain. At 35 days old was observed effect on the yield of thigh and drumstick, ether extract and crude protein carcass and nitrogen retention. Are recommended that the relations methionine plus cystine : digestible lysine 0.68 and 0.88 over the period 22 to 28 and 29 to 35 days of age, respectively.

Objetivou-se verificar a divergência genética entre linhagens de codornas de corte e seus cruzamentos para as características de desempenho através da análise multivariada. Foram utilizadas quatro linhagens de codornas de corte em um sistema de cruzamentos dialélicos completos, proporcionando a formação de 16 grupos de progênies, sendo quatro parentais puros: L1, L2, L3 e L4; seis grupos genéticos mestiços F1: G12, G13, G14, G23, G24 e G34; e seis grupos genéticos mestiços F1 recíprocos. Foram avaliadas as seguintes variáveis: peso corporal médio ao nascimento, aos 28, aos 35 e aos 42 dias de idade; o consumo médio de dieta do nascimento aos 35 e aos 42 dias de idade; a conversão alimentar do nascimento aos 35 e aos 42 dias de idade; e o ganho em peso do nascimento aos 35 e aos 42 dias de idade. O desempenho dos grupos genéticos foi avaliado por meio da análise de variância multivariada e a primeira variável canônica, usando os testes do maior autovalor de Roy e da união-interseção de Roy para as comparações múltiplas. O estudo da divergência genética foi feito por meio da análise por variáveis canônicas e pelo método de otimização de Tocher. As três primeiras variáveis canônicas explicaram 88,82% da variação entre os grupos genéticos. A divergência genética entre os grupos genéticos avaliados permitiu a formação de quatro grupos: 1 - L1, G12, G23, G21 e G41; 2 - G13 e G31; 3 - L4 e G43; 4 - G32; 5 - G14 e G24; 6 - G42 e 7 - L2, L3 e G34, identificando a L4 como a linhagem que mais influiu na formação de novo grupos.

The objective was to evaluate the genetic divergence between lineages of quail and their crosses to the performance characteristics through multivariate analysis. Four lines of quails were used in a complete diallel system, provided training to 16 groups of progenies, four parental pure: L1, L2, L3 and L4; six genetic groups crossbred F1: G12, G13, G14, G23, G24 and G34; and six reciprocal F1 crossbred genetic groups. The variables were evaluated: mean body weight at birth, at 28, at 35 and 42 days of age; the average consumption of diet from birth to 35 and 42 days of age; feed conversion birth at 35 and 42 days of age; and the weight gain from birth to 35 and 42 days of age. The performance of genetic groups was assessed by multivariate analysis of variance and the first canonical variable, using the tests of the largest eigenvalue of Roy and Roy union-intersection for multiple comparisons. The study of genetic diversity was done by canonical variate analysis and by the optimization method of Tocher. The first three canonical variables explained 88.82% of the genetic variation between groups. The genetic divergence between the analyzed genetic groups allowed the formation of four groups: 1 - L1, G12, G23, G21 and G41; 2 - G13 and G31; 3 - L4 and G43; 4 - G32; 5 - G14 and G24; 6 - G42 and 7 - L2, L3, identifing L4 G34 as the lineage that most influenced the formation of new groups.

O trabalho foi conduzido com o objetivo de se avaliar o efeito de duas idades de abate sobre o rendimento de carcaça e propriedades finais da carne de codornas de corte (Coturnix coturnix). Foram abatidas 40 codornas (machos e fêmeas) aos 35 e aos 42 dias de idade obtendo-se o peso corporal, peso de carcaça quente e resfriada, peso de peito, peso de perna, rendimento de carcaça quente e fria, rendimento de peito, rendimento de pernas, pH inicial e final (24 horas "post mortem", capacidade de retenção de água (CRA), cor (L*, a*, b*), perda de peso por cocção (PPC) e maciez objetiva (força de cisalhamento). Não houve diferença no rendimento de carcaça e cortes entre as idades de abate, entretanto as aves abatidas aos 42 dias de idade apresentaram-se com maior peso corporal. Para os parâmetros da qualidade da carne, observou-se que o pH inicial foi menor para as aves abatidas aos 42 dias de idade. Fêmeas abatidas aos 35 dias de idade apresentaram carne com menor teor de vermelho. Machos apresentaram a carne com pH mais baixo. Dessa forma o abate dos animais aos 42 dias de idade proporcionou melhor desempenho e melhores características de carcaça aos machos.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of sex and two ages at slaughter on the performance, carcass traits and meat quality of quails (Coturnix coturnix). Forty quails (males and females) were slaughtered at an age of 35 and 42 days. Then, the body weight, hot and cold carcass weight, breast weight, leg weight, hot and cold carcass yield, breast yield, leg yield, initial and final (24 hours post-mortem) pH values, water-holding capacity (WHC), color (L*, a* and b*), cooking loss and objective tenderness (shear force) were evalauted. There were no differences in carcass and cuts yields between the ages at slaughter. However, the quails slaughtered at 42 days of age had higher body weight than the quails slaughtered at 35 days of age. As to the parameters of meat quality, the initial pH values were lower in quails slaughtered at 42 days of age than in quails slaughtered at 35 days of age. Females slaughtered at 35 days of age had meat with lower degree of redness. The pH values of meat from males were lower with regard to those ones of meat from females. Therefore, the slaughter at 42 days of age yielded a better performance and carcass traits in males quails.
