Summary: The presence of two species ofGomphocarpus(Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae) that grow spontaneously in Argentina is reported here:G. fruticosus(cultivation escaped) andG.physocarpus(naturalized). Both species are described, and their geographical distribution, uses, pollination and dispersal are indicated. In addition, the naturalization status of these species in the country is analyzed.

Resumen: Se reporta la presencia de dos especies del géneroGomphocarpus(Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae) que crecen espontáneamente en la Argentina:G. fruticosus(escapada de cultivo) yG. physocarpus(naturalizada). Las mismas se describen, se indica su distribución geográfica, usos, polinización y dispersión. Además, se analiza el estatus de naturalización de estas especies en el país.

Resumen: Tradicionalmente América del Sur fue considerado como un continente isla durante la mayor parte del Terciario. Sin embargo, evidencia biológica y paleontológica dispersa indica que un intercambio biótico entre Norte y Sudamérica habría ocurrido en tiempos pre-Pliocenos. En contraposición, la evidencia geológica que sugiere que el Istmo de Panamá se habría cerrado en el Mioceno es todavía débil, y esto constituye una importante inconsistencia entre los datos geológicos y biológicos. Con la finalidad de explicar el poblamiento de las Islas Caribeñas por fauna y flora terrestres, diversos autores propusieron que entre el Eoceno y Oligoceno existió una lengua de tierra emergida llamada GAARlandia que uníría América del Sur con esas islas. Si este fuera el caso, habrían ocurrido intercambios bióticos entre las Islas del Caribe y ambas américas en una estrecha ventana temporal. Esta nueva hipótesis tiene implicancias profundas en el entendimiento de las fases tempranas del intercambio biótico entre las Américas en tiempos pre-pliocenos.

The first fossil remains of vertebrates, invertebrates, plants and palynomorphs of the Chorrillo Formation (Austral Basin), about 30km to the SW of the town of El Calafate (Province of Santa Cruz), are described. Fossils include the elasmarian (basal Iguanodontia) Isasicursor santacrucensis gen. et sp. nov., the large titanosaur Nullotitan glaciaris gen. et sp. nov., both large and small Megaraptoridae indet., and fragments of sauropod and theropod eggshells. The list of vertebrates is also composed by the Neognathae Kookne yeutensis gen. et sp. nov., two isolated caudal vertebrae of Mammalia indet., and isolated teeth of a large mosasaur. Remains of fishes, anurans, turtles, and snakes are represented by fragmentary material of low taxonomical value, with the exception of remains belonging to Calyptocephalellidae. On the other hand, a remarkable diversity of terrestrial and freshwater gastropods has been documented, as well as fossil woods and palinological assemblages. The Chorrillo Formation continues south, in the Las Chinas River valley, southern Chile, where it is called Dorotea Formation. Both units share in their lower two thirds abundant materials of titanosaurs, whose remains cease to appear in the upper third, registering only elasmarians (Chorrillo Formation) and hadrosaurs (Dorotea Formation). Above both units there are levels with remains of invertebrates and marine reptiles. It is striking that the dinosaurs of the lower two thirds of the Chorrillo and Dorotea formations are represented by large basal titanosaurs and Megaraptoridae coelurosaurs, being the Saltasaurinae and Aeolosaurinae sauropods and Abelisauridae theropods totally absent. In contrast, these taxa are dominant components in sedimentary units of central and northern Patagonia (e.g., Allen, Los Alamitos, La Colonia formations). Such differences could reflect, in part, a greater antiquity (i.e., late Campanian-early Maastrichtian) for the Chorrillo fossils, or, more probably, different environmental conditions. Thus, knowledge of the biota of the southern tip of Patagonia is expanded, particularly those temporarily close to the K-Pg boundary.

Se describen los primeros restos fósiles de vertebrados, invertebrados, plantas y palinomorfos de la Formación Chorrillo (Cuenca Austral), aflorante unos 30km al SW de la localidad de El Calafate (Provincia de Santa Cruz). Los fósiles de dinosaurios no avianos incluyen el elasmariano (Iguanodontia basal) Isasicursor santacrucensis gen. et sp. nov., el titanosaurio gigante Nullotitan glaciaris gen. et sp. nov., Megaraptoridae indet. de tamaños pequeño y grande, y fragmentos de cáscaras de huevo pertenecientes a saurópodos y terópodos. La lista de vertebrados se compone también del Neognathae Kookne yeutensis gen. et sp. nov., dos vértebras caudales aisladas de Mammalia indet., y dientes aislados de un mosasaurio de gran tamaño. Han sido colectados también restos de peces, anuros, tortugas y serpientes los cuales están representados por material fragmentario de escaso valor taxonómico, con la excepción de restos pertenecientes a Calyptocephalellidae. Por otra parte, ha sido documentada una notable diversidad de gasterópodos terrestres y dulceacuícolas, así como leños fósiles y asociaciones palinológicas. La Formación Chorrillo se continúa hacia el sur, en el valle del río Las Chinas, Chile, en donde es denominada Formación Dorotea. Ambas unidades comparten en sus dos tercios inferiores abundante material de titanosaurios, cuyos restos dejan de aparecer en el tercio superior, registrándose solo elasmarianos (Fm Chorrillo) y hadrosaurios (Fm Dorotea). Por encima de ambas unidades existen niveles con restos de invertebrados y reptiles marinos. Llama la atención que los dinosaurios de los dos tercios inferiores de las formaciones Chorrillo y Dorotea estén representados por titanosaurios basales de gran tamaño y celurosaurios Megaraptoridae, estando ausentes los Saltasaurinae, Aeolosaurinae y Abelisauridae, los cuales son componentes dominantes en las unidades sedimentarias del Maastrichtiano de la provincia de Chubut y del norte patagónico (p.ej., formaciones Allen, Los Alamitos y La Colonia, por ejemplo). Estas diferencias podrían reflejar, en parte, una mayor antigüedad (i.e., Campaniano tardío -Maastrichtiano temprano) para los fósiles de Chorrillo. Se amplía así el conocimiento de las biotas del extremo sur de Patagonia, en particular de aquellas temporalmente cercanas al límite K-Pg.

A comparative analysis on lithics projectile points assemblages from two study areas of North Western Argentina is presented in this paper. One of the assemblages was recovered in Santa María Valley, Catamarca, and the other one in Pastos Grandes Basin, particularly Alero Cuevas site, puna of Salta Province. Applying a comparative methodology three similar morphological tipes were detected in both study areas, and anothers similar types between each one of the study areas and another places of the puna, on a regional scale. The results allows us to define a chronological frame for the first hunter gatherers occupations in the Santa María Valley. Those occupations would persist along the early Holocene, middle Holocene, and the beginins of the late Holocene. Moreover, a hypothesis on people movements on a regional spatial scale or information transmission is proposed, taking in to account the diferences and similarities within the identified projectile points types.

En este trabajo se presenta un análisis comparativo sobre conjuntos de puntas de proyectil líticas provenientes de dos áreas del Noroeste Argentino. Uno de ellos pertenece al sector de valles mesotermales, el valle de Santa María en Catamarca, mientras que el otro corresponde a la cuenca de Pastos Grandes, sitio Alero Cuevas en particular, ubicado en la puna de Salta. A través de una metodología comparativa se han registrado tres tipos morfológicos coincidentes entre ambos espacios, y diferentes tipos morfológicos coincidentes entre las áreas en cuestión y diferentes sectores de la puna considerando una escala regional. Esto ha permitido establecer un marco cronológico para las ocupaciones cazadoras recolectoras en el Valle de Santa María, las cuales se habrían extendido a lo largo del Holoceno Temprano, Holoceno medio e inicios del Holoceno Tardío. A su vez se plantea la hipótesis de la circulación de personas en una escala espacial amplia o la transmisión de información, en base a las diferencias y similitudes entre los tipos de puntas de proyectil identificados.

Habitat loss is one of the most serious processes that affect biological diversity. The grasslands of southeastern South America are one of the most affected biomes by this process due to various factors related to human activities. The objective of this work is to evaluate the loss of biodiversity in the Reserva Natural Santa Catalina as a model to visualize this process in the Pampas of southeastern South America. For this, the lists of species that currently inhabit the reserve were compared with collections and works published before 1970 to detect which ecosystem components were lost. 27 species of plants and 12 species of birds that became extinct from the locality were counted. 100% of the plants and 83% of the birds are species that grow or inhabit native grasslands. On the other hand, among these, five species of plants and two of birds have become extinct at the regional level. The vulnerability of grasslands in the region is evidenced by these values, and some factors that may have caused this loss are discussed.

La pérdida de hábitat es uno de los procesos más graves que afectan la diversidad biológica. Los pastizales del sureste de América del sur son uno de los biomas más afectados por este proceso debido a diversos factores relacionados a las actividades humanas. El objetivo de este trabajo es evaluar la pérdida de biodiversidad en la Reserva Natural Santa Catalina como un modelo para visualizar este proceso en las Pampas húmedas del sureste de América del Sur. Para ello se compararon los listados de especies que actualmente habitan la reserva con colecciones y trabajos publicados antes de 1970 para detectar qué componentes del ecosistema se han perdido. Se contabilizaron 27 especies de plantas y 12 especies de aves que se extinguieron de la localidad. Un 100 % de las plantas y un 83% de las aves son especies que crecen o habitan en pastizales nativos. Por otra parte, de entre estas, cinco especies de plantas y dos de aves se han extinto a nivel regional. La vulnerabilidad de los pastizales de la región queda evidenciada por estos valores, y se discuten algunos factores que pueden haber causado esta pérdida.

Abstract In South American rivers, Eichhornia crassipes and other floating plants intertwine and form floating rafts commonly known as "camalotales" which are especially abundant during flooding periods. During extraordinary floods, hectares of floating mats are drifted by the Plata Basin Rivers. In the Río de la Plata several reports suggest that many animal and plant species from subtropical latitudes colonizes the area through these large rafts. These episodes are very important from the economic point of view because they cause several troubles to navigation and other activities. On the other hand, benefits to biodiversity are conspicuous, and many authors consider this process vital to the Río de la Plata wetlands and forests. However, there is scarce knowledge about Eichhornia rafts plant species composition. With the aim of creating an exhaustive list of the flora of the Eichhornia rafts, we visited the Río de la Plata coast during a massive Eichhornia rafts arrival. Thirty-two plant species were recorded in three different plant assemblages: Eichhornia rafts sensu stricto, floating reeds (canutillares) and embalsados. In front of this unexpected we emphasize the need to include this phenomenon in regional biodiversity conservation plans.

Resumen En los ríos sudamericanos, Eichhornia crassipes y otras plantas flotantes se entrelazan y forman balsas flotantes conocidas comúnmente como "camalotales" especialmente abundantes durante los períodos de inundación. Durante las inundaciones, grandes superficies de estas balsas flotantes son derivadas por los ríos de la Cuenca del Plata. En el Río de la Plata numerosos trabajos sugieren que muchas especies de animales y plantas de latitudes subtropicales colonizan el área a través de estas grandes balsas. Estos episodios son muy importantes desde el punto de vista económico debido a que causan varios problemas de navegación y otras actividades. Por otro lado, para la biodiversidad tiene beneficios evidentes, y muchos autores consideran este proceso vital para los humedales y bosques del Río de la Plata. Sin embargo, hay escaso conocimiento sobre la composición de las especies de plantas de los camalotales. Con el fin de crear una lista exhaustiva de su flora, visitamos la costa del Río de la Plata durante una llegada masiva. Treinta y dos especies de plantas se registraron en tres complejos diferentes: camalotales sensu stricto, pajonales flotantes (canutillares) y embalsados. Frente a este inesperado hecho, enfatizamos la necesidad de incluir este fenómeno en los planes regionales de conservación de la biodiversidad.

Abstract The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is distributed among most oceans and seas of the globe (except Mediterranean Sea). These whales migrate from feeding regions in the Antarctic waters to breeding areas in tropical and subtropical seas. Here we report the stranding of a female young humpback whale, which was founded dead in the vicinity of the Talavera Island, in the Paraná River Delta, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. From the analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequences, two novel haplotypes were found, totalizing four haplotypes described for the species. In the La Plata River Basin this species was found only twice at the end of the XIX century. Thus, the new finding constitutes an important addition to the list of cetaceans that occurs in Uruguay, Paraná and La Plata Rivers.

The Northern region of Buenos Aires province, in Argentina, suffered an uninterrupted increase in rainfall and temperature values during the last decades. The aim of the present contribution is to analyze the effects of such climatic change in the distribution of local flora and fauna. The analysis resulted in the recognition of distributional shifts in a total of 115 species. These changes represented the progressive southern expansion of species typically present in subtropical areas. Because all these changes have a similar orientation and direction, and included a large number of plant and animals with different ecological requirements, it is here postulated that those geographical changes are probably a response to climatic alteration.

La región norte de la provincia de Buenos Aires, en la Argentina, sufrió un incremento ininterrumpido de los valores de precipitación y temperatura durante las últimas décadas. El objetivo de esta contribución es analizar los efectos de dicho cambio climático en la distribución de la flora y fauna locales. El análisis resultó en el reconocimiento de corrimientos en la distribución de un total de 115 especies. Estos cambios representaron una expansión progresiva hacia el sur de especies presentes típicamente en áreas subtropicales. Como todos estos cambios tienen una orientación y dirección similares, e incluyen un gran número de plantas y animales con diferentes requerimientos ecológicos, se postula que estos cambios de distribución geográfica son probablemente una respuesta a la alteración climática.

The paleoichthyological record from the early Pliocene of Farola Monte Hermoso locality, southern Buenos Aires province (Argentina) is still patchy and biased. During such time span, this locality may be related to the Río Colorado paleobasin, and consequently may have been related to the Austral Ichthyogeographical Region. In the present contribution we describe a new genus and species of a very large Percichthyidae, coming from fluvial deposits of the Monte Hermoso Formation. The new taxon constitutes the sister group of the genera Percichthys and Santosius. This finding, together with other previous paleoichthyological records, as well as phylogenetic and phylogeographic molecular analyses of living taxa, suggest the existence of an ichthyofaunistic turnover for the late Neogene in the Patagonian region. In this way, the current composition of the Patagonian ichthyofauna would be of recent age, possibly from the Pleistocene.

Los registros paleoictiológicos del Plioceno temprano de la localidad de Farola Monte Hermoso, al sur de la provincia de Buenos Aires (Argentina) son aún escasos y sesgados. Durante este lapso, dicha localidad habría estado vinculada a la paleocuenca del Río Colorado, por lo que se relacionaría con la Región Ictiogeográfica Austral. En la presente contribución se describe un nuevo género y especie de Percichthyidae de gran tamaño, procedente de los depósitos fluviales de la Formación Monte Hermoso, el cual comparte caracteres derivados con los géneros sudamericanos Percichthys y Santosius. Este hallazgo, conjuntamente con otros registros paleoictiológicos previos y análisis moleculares de taxones actuales, sugieren un recambio ictiofaunístico de importancia para el Neógeno tardío en la región Patagónica. De este modo, la conformación actual de la icitiofauna patagónica sería de reciente data, posiblemente a partir del Pleistoceno.

In this contribution we analyze the small mammals associations recovered from the archaeological site El Shincal de Quimivil, Catamarca Province, Argentina. The sample represents three occupation times between the XIV and XVII centuries. High frequencies of vertebral elements and isolated incisors as well as the absence of clear signs of dissolution on bones and teeth suggest that the association would not be the product of the trophic activities of predators but it would be related to eto-ecological attributes of the recorded species. The sample, dominated by the cricetid Calomys cf. C. musculinus, is also composed by one didelphimorphian (Thylamys cf. T. pallidior), three sigmodontine rodents (Akodon cf. A. dolores, Graomys griseofavus, and Phyllotis xanthopygus), and two species of caviomorph rodents (Ctenomys sp., and Microcavia australis). The quantitative and qualitative taxonomic composition of the historical sample, with the dominance of Calomys cf., C. musculinus respect to the other small mammals, indicates differences respect to the environment naturally developed in this area, probably related to the establishment of incipient agroecosystems. The absence of Eligmodontia, a genus whose species inhabit arid environments with sparse vegetation and bare sandy or stony soils, could be vinculated with more humid local conditions and the irrigation practices by human populations. The poor knowledge of prehispanic, historical, and present small mammal associations in this area of Monte ecoregion, prevents an adequate comparison of the studied sample and the construction of an environmental scheme from the archaeofaunistic record. The particularly humid microenvironment by the establishment of agricultural practices constitutes an additional factor that makes the comparison with additional samples coming from nearby areas very difficult.

En el presente trabajo se analizan las asociaciones de micromamíferos registradas en el sitio arqueológico El Shincal de Quimivil, provincia de Catamarca, Argentina. El yacimiento representa tres períodos de ocupación humana, abarcando un intervalo entre los siglos XIV y XVII de la Era. La alta frecuencia de elementos vertebrales e incisivos aislados junto con la ausencia de claras marcas de disolución sugiere que el conjunto no sería producto de la actividad de depredadores, sino que estaría relacionada con causas eto-ecológicas de las especies registradas. La muestra, dominada por Calomys cf. C. musculinus, está integrada además por un didelfimorfo (Thylamys cf. T. pallidior), tres especies de roedores sigmodontinos (Akodon cf. A. dolores, Graomys griseofavus y Phyllotis xanthopygus) y dos de roedores caviomorfos (Ctenomys sp., y Microcavia australis). La composición taxonómica cuantitativa y cualitativa de la muestra de tiempos históricos, con la dominancia de Calomys cf., C. musculinus sobre otros pequeños mamíferos, sugiere modificaciones respecto al ambiente original, probablemente relacionada al establecimiento de agroecosistemas incipientes. La ausencia de Eligmodontia, un género cuyas especies habitan ambientes áridos con escasa vegetación y suelos desnudos arenosos o pedregosos, puede vincularse a condiciones locales de mayor humedad que en el presente y/o al aprovechamiento de este sector a través de prácticas de riego por parte de los pobladores. El escaso conocimiento de las asociaciones de pequeños mamíferos para tiempos pre-hispánicos, históricos y modernos en este sector del Monte impide una comparación adecuada de la muestra estudiada y la reconstrucción de un esquema ambiental a partir del registro arqueofaunístico. El microambiente particularmente húmedo por el establecimiento de áreas agrícolas constituye un factor adicional que dificulta su comparación con muestras adicionales provenientes de áreas circundantes.

: Neerolestes is an enigmatic Miocene South American mammal that is the size of a shrew, the phyloge-netic relationships of which constituted a matter of debate since its original description in 1891. This taxon has been variously related to the Chrysochloroidea, Palaeanodonta, Xenarthra, Gondwanatheria, and Metatheria. However, Neerolestes exhibits fossorial adaptations in combination with cranial, postcranial, and dental features that are remarkably plesiomorphic for a therian mammal. This led several authors to consider Neerolestes as a Theria ineertae sedis, Tribosphenida ineertae sedis, and even as a Mammalia ineertae sedis. We present evidence in support that Neerolestes belongs to the Dryolestoidea, an extinct group of basal cladotherians that were abundant and widespread from the Late Jurassic through the Late Cretaceous. Recent discoveries demonstrated that the South American continent was a cradle for the evolutionary radiation of dryolestoid mammals at the end of the Cretaceous. Moreover, it become evident that some of these early mammals persisted across the K-P boundary, as illustrated by the peligrotheriid dryolestoid Peligrotherium, documented in Paleocene beds of Patagonia. A comprehensive cladistic analysis of living and fossil mammals depicts Neerolestes as a member of the dryolestoid subclade Meridiolestida, thus amplifying the morphological disparity of this lineage of southern dryolestoids, including dog-sized bunodontian forms (i.e., Peligrotherium), alongside with small-sized insectivores (i.e., Neerolestes). Present study solves the enigma that for the last 120 years surrounded the phylogenetic relationships of the bizarre mammal Neerolestes, also demonstrating the unexpected survival of South American dryolestoids up to Miocene times.

Neerolestes es un enigmático mamífero del Mioceno de América del Sur del tamaño de una musaraña, cuyas relaciones filogenéticas han sido intensamente debatidas desde que fuera originalmente descripto en 1891 por Florentino Ameghino. Este taxón ha sido relacionado con los Chrysochloroidea, Palaeanodonta, Xenarthra, Gondwanatheria, y Metatheria. Sin embargo, Neerolestes exhibe adaptaciones fosoriales en combinación con caracteres craneanos, postcraneanos y dentarios remarcablemente plesiomórficos para un mamífero terio. Esto llevó a varios autores a considerar a Neerolestes como un Theria ineertae sedis, Tribosphenida ineertae sedis, e incluso como un Mammalia ineertae sedis. Presentamos aquí evidencia anatómica que demuestra la pertenencia de Neerolestes a los Dryolestoidea, un grupo extinguido de cladoterios basales que fueron abundantes y ampliamente distribuidos durante el Jurásico Tardío al Cretácico Tardío. Descubrimientos recientes han demostrado que el continente Sudamericano constituyó una región clave en lo que respecta a la radiación evolutiva de los mamíferos driolestoideos hacia fines del Cretácico. Más aún, hoy se sabe que algunos de estos mamíferos arcaicos sobrepasaron la frontera Cretácico-Paleoceno, tal como es demostrado por el driolestoideo peligrotérido Peligrotherium, procedente de capas del Paleoceno de Patagonia. Un análisis comprehensivo de mamíferos vivientes y fósiles, llevado a cabo en el presente estudio, dio por resultado la inclusión de Neerolestes dentro del subclado driolestoideo de los Meridiolestida. Esto amplifica la disparidad morfológica conocida para este grupo de mamíferos australes, que incluyen animales bunodontes de la talla de un perro (i.e., Peligrotherium) hasta formas insectívoras y foso-riales de tamaño diminuto (i.e., Neerolestes). El presente estudio resuelve el enigma que durante los últimos 120 años rodeó las relaciones de parentesco del extraño Neerolestes, demostrando también la inesperada supervivencia de los driolestoideos sudamericanos hasta tiempos Miocenos.

A espécie fóssil Arrhinolemur scalabrinii, descrita de depósitos do Mioceno Superior de Entre Ríos, Argentina, é reavaliada. Apesar da espécie ter sido originalmente incluída em Primata (Mammalia), constituindo-se posteriormente no único membro da ordem Arrhinolemuroidea dentro de Mammalia, nossa análise indica que o espécime trata-se de um peixe do gênero Leporinus, família Anostomidae (Characiformes). A espécie é redescrita, e os caracteres que fundamentam a nova posição do gênero são discutidos

The fossil species Arrhinolemur scalabrinii, which was described from late Miocene deposits of Entre Ríos, Argentina, is reevaluated. Whereas the species was originally placed in the Primates (Mammalia) and later made the unique member of the order Arrhinolemuroidea within the Mammalia, our analysis indicates that the specimen is rather a fish of the genus Leporinus, family Anostomidae (Characiformes). The species is redescribed, and the characters that support its new generic assignment are discussed.

Here we describe a new theropod, Bicentenaria argentina nov. gen. et nov. sp., from the early Late Cretaceous of Patagonia. It is represented by more than a hundred bones belonging to different sized individuals, which were buried together in disarticulation after little transportation. The available association of skeletal elements suggests a gregarious behaviour for Bicentenaria, an ethological trait also recorded among other theropod clades. Increasing documentation of monospecific assemblages of different groups of theropods suggests that a gregarious behaviour may have constituted the ancestral condition for Theropoda, at least. Bicentenaria characterizes for the surangular bone with a high dorsal margin and a prominent lateral shelf, a retroarticular process that is low, wide and spoon-shaped, and quadrate bone with its lateral condyle larger than the medial one. Phylogenetic analysis found the Chinese Tugulusaurus and the Patagonian Bicentenaria as successive sister taxa of all other coelurosaurs, thus revealing the importance of the new taxon in the understanding of the early diversification of Coelurosauria. In particular, Bicentenaria amplifies the array of basal coelurosaurs that inhabited Gondwana during the Cretaceous, also including compsognathids, Aniksosaurus and Santanaraptor. Although still restricted to a handful of forms, available information indicates that Gondwana was a cradle for the evolution of different lineages of basal coelurosaurs, different from those documented in Upper Cretaceous beds in the northern landmasses. Analysis of body size distribution in averostran theropods results in the identification of two main episodes of drastic size reduction in the evolutionary history of Coelurosauria: one occurred at the initial radiation of the group (as represented by Bicentenaria, Zuolong, Tugulusaurus, compsognathids, and Aniksosaurus), and a second episode occurred at the early diverification of Paraves or avialans. Reduction in body size may have allowed adult coelurosaurians to exploit ecological niches not occupied before by larger basal averostrans.

En la presente contribución se describe el nuevo terópodo Bicentenaria argentina nov. gen. et nov. sp., del Cretácico Tardío temprano de Patagonia. El nuevo taxón se encuentra representado por más de una centena de huesos pertenecientes a individuos de diferentes tamaños, los cuales fueron enterrados todos juntos en desarticulación, luego de un leve transporte. La asociación disponible de materiales sugiere hábitos gregarios para Bicentenaria, un rasgo etológico también registrado en otros clados de terópodos. La documentación recurrente de asociaciones monoespecíficas de diferentes grupos de terópodos sugiere que los hábitos gregarios pudieron haber constituido la condición ancestral para Theropoda. Bicentenaria se caracteriza por un hueso surangular con un margen dorsal prominente y con una repisa lateral bien desarrollada, un proceso retroarticular que es bajo, transversalmente amplio y en forma de cuchara, y un hueso cuadrado cuyo cóndilo lateral es de tamaño mucho mayor que el medial. El análisis filogenético recuperó al género chino Tugulusaurus y al patagónico Bicentenaria como grupos hermanos sucesivos de los restantes celurosaurios, revelando de este modo la importancia del nuevo taxón para el entendimiento de la radiación temprana de los Coelurosauria. En particular, Bicentenaria amplifica el elenco de celurosaurios basales que habitaron Gondwana durante el Cretácico, incluyendo entre otros a los compsognátidos, Aniksosaurus y Santanaraptor. A pesar de encontrarse restringida a un puñado de formas, la información disponible sugiere que Gondwana fue un importante centro para la evolución de diferentes linajes de celurosaurios basales, diferentes de aquellos representados en el Hemisferio Norte. Un análisis de la distribución del tamaño corporal en los terópodos averostros permite identificar dos episodios principales de drástica reducción del tamaño en el curso de la historia evolutiva de los Coelurosauria. El primero de estos episodios ocurrió durante la radiación inicial del grupo (tal como es representado por Bicentenaria, Zuolong, Tugulusaurus, compsognátidos, y Aniksosaurus), y el segundo episodio tomó lugar en la temprana diversificación de Paraves o Avialae. La reducción en la talla corporal pudo haber permitido a los celurosaurios adultos explotar nichos no ocupados anteriormente por terópodos averostros basales de mayor tamaño.

We describe an association of fossil vertebrates from the Morales Member of the Las Curtiembres Formation (Campanian) near Puente Morales, Salta Province, NW Argentina. The fossils include teleostean fishes, pipid frogs, pleurodiran turtles, mesoeucrocodylians, non-avian theropod dinosaurs, and enantiornithine birds. The vertebrate record is dominated by freshwater taxa. With the exception of pipid frogs, all taxa here described constitute new records for this sedimentary unit. Among them, the turtles are reported for the first time in the Cretaceous of northwestern Argentina (Salta Group). Additionally, the recently published small enantiornithine Intiornis inexpectatus enlarges the diversity of cretaceous birds from South America. Despite the fragmentary nature of the specimens, the information provided by this Late Cretaceous assemblage sheds new light on the composition of the continental vertebrate fauna in a paleontologically poorly known region of South America.

Aquí describimos una asociación de fósiles de vertebrados proveniente del Miembro Morales de la Formación Las Curtiembres (Campaniano) exhumada en la localidad de Puente Morales, provincia de Salta, Argentina. Esta asociación se encuentra conformada por peces teleósteos, anuros pipidos, tortugas pleurodiras, mesoeucrocodilidos, dinosaurios terópodos no avianos y aves Enantiornithes. Este registro de vertebrados se encuentra dominado por taxa de agua dulce. Con la excepción de los anuros pipidos, todos los demás taxa aquí descriptos constituyen nuevos registros para esta unidad sedimentaria. Entre ellos, el registro de tortugas resulta ser el primero para el Grupo Salta. Adicionalmente, el Enantiornithes Intiornis inexpectatus amplía la diversidad de aves cretácicas de América del Sur. Más allá de la naturaleza fragmentaria de algunos de los especímenes, la información proporcionada por esta asociación del Cretácico Superior aporta novedosa información acerca de la composición de la poco conocida fauna de vertebrados continentales de esta región de América del Sur.
